Equations are derived to allow for different mean velocities of axial flow for different sizes of particles in fully mixed ball mills. The equations are modified to allow for the exit classification that occurs in grate-discharge autogenous and semiautogenous tumbling mills. An approximate treatment is given that applies for other forms of residence time distribution, provided that the mill contents are close to fully mixed.

Coal represents 80% of the fuel reserves of this country, yet only 20% of the fuel consumption. In order to change this ridiculous situation, a realistic coal utilization roadmap needs to be drawn to show how we go from where we are to where we want to be. The completion of the roadways will require the building of research bridges. The research bridges on the coal processing section of the superhighway should be built to process 500pm by 100pm rather than 25pm by 0 raw coal . Particular emphasis should be on middlings processing and total plant performance. The superhighway should be layed out by a team of fuel, coal preparation and mining engineers.

INTRODUCTION Spent household dry cell batteries are frequently disposed of with metropolitan wastestream (MSW) in landfills where they can leak due to handling or aging. Frequent rain and sun cycles, especially in tropical environments, coupled to the action of leachate, dissolve their metal constituents which will eventually reach rivers, lakes and underground water. It is well known that some of these metals are fundamental to sustain life and that is why living organisms concentrate them through their metabolism, but it has been also recognized that beyond specific limits they can definitely be deleterious to the environment. In other words, high concentration of heavy metals are proven to cause chronic or acute diseases and toxic reactions, by acting on mammals' kidneys, liver and nervous system. In addition, some metals frequently used in household batteries, as mercury and cadmium, are said to be carcinogenic (Landis et al. 1995, Silva et al. 1988). Occasionally, plants to treat MSW are coupled to compost production. Household batteries present in MSW can be dragged into these plants, contaminating their products and eventually reaching vegetables making them not proper to consume by people and animals. Alternatively, batteries are also conveyed to incinerators and burned, throwing into the atmosphere volatile species. These can either act as contaminants as toxic vapor species or be delivered by winds and scavenged by rains contaminating soils and water far away from their source. In conclusion, despite the treatment applied to MSW, one can say that battery residues are potentially environmentally hazardous. The careful assessment of the environmental impact caused by residues of household batteries it is not an easy task and it can be referred as a multivariable problem. First, many different household batteries are produced by industry and the potential environmental hazard associated to their disposal depends primarily on the type of battery and manufacturer's technology. Work has shown that the use of high-pressure water jets enhances the performance of mechanical cutting in very hard rock. To assess the potential of this approach for use in conjunction with free rolling cutters, a series of tests has been conducted using both disc and button type cutters, to determine the relative effects, on cutter performance, of variations in relevant jet and cutting parameters. In these tests it was found that water jet assistance can result in reductions in the forces on a free rolling cutter typically of the order of 40%.

This paper describes the development of a trim blast design to improve the stability of a final pit wall. Description is given of the effects of rock characteristics, rock type, and pit plans on the blast design. Currently, six benches have been mined with trim blasting. A more stable final wall has resulted and the successful program has reduced mining costs over an extended time period. Low-cost blast monitoring and field observation were used to determine peak particle velocity and blast damage. Using criteria developed from this relationship, trim blasts were designed and evaluated.

The World Health Organization (WHO) considers contamination from oxyanions, such as selenium and arsenic, a global concern. While their elemental forms are toxic, the aqueous oxyanions are more so. These aqueous forms, which exist at a higher oxidation state, are the most common forms released during mining processes. Many technologies are capable of meeting the governmental discharge criteria for oxyanionic contaminants, but may possess limitations due to redox chemistry as well as the water matrices. An innovative technology was developed that can successfully reduce such aqueous forms generated during mining processes to a level below the discharge criteria. This paper discusses how an understanding of the sensitivities of this novel adsorbent towards these variations in water matrices and redox chemistry can be used to optimize its application.

In the past decade a good deal of effort has gone into the computer simulation of the heat distribution of pellet induration systems. The major uncertainty in the analysis of such systems is the gas flow distribution and, in particular, the role of leakage. Evaluation of the leakage into or out of a zone has proved to be very difficult, as has the cross-flow from one zone to another when adjoining zones have gas flows which change direction from up draft to down draft for example. This paper describes an initial model to calculate the gas flow distribution in a variety of practical situations of interest to those involved in pellet induration. The model is based upon a multiphase CFD code called CASCADE which is used in conjunction with the pellet induration simulation INDSYS.

In North America, the paper industry is by far the largest consumer of coating and filler mineral pigments. Present use is at an annual rate of 5.5 million metric tons with a value of $660 million. Current estimates are 65 percent is used in coating and 35 percent in filler applications. During the past decade, the switch to alkaline papermaking has provided the opportunity to substantially increase filler levels while maintaining paper strength. As a result filler consumption has been growing at a late in excess of 15 percent yearly. Unfortunately, within a few years, mandated recycling could slow or even reverse this trend. Mineral suspensions in water show Newtonian flow properties at low percent solids. However, this changes to a non-Newtonian regime as the pet-cent solids increases. For Newtonian fluids, viscosity is independent of shear rate, hut, for non-Newtonian fluids, viscosity varies with shear rate. Therefore, if the slurry is non-Newtonian, attempting to measure the viscosity at a shear rate different from the shear rate experienced by the fluid within the process is futile. This is especially true for a hydrocyclone, where the rate of shear is different at different points within the hydrocyclone. In this case, it is very important to determine the flow type of the suspension before attempting to establish any correlation between the viscosity and the process efficiency. A new technique to distinguish such changes inflow type was developed. This involves two viscometers: a coaxial cylinder-type viscometer that measures apparent viscosity at low shear rates and a vibrating sphere-type viscometer that measures the apparent viscosity at high shear rates. For each of these instruments, special precautions were taken to allow, for the measurement of the viscosity of rapidly settling mineral suspensions. Because the vibrating sphere viscometer is operated at a much higher shear rate than the rotating viscometer, the two instruments together could determine the shear-rate dependency of the viscosity. Ground silica (80% passing 65 µm) in water was used to prepare slurries at concentrations ranging from 10% to 70% (by weight) solids. The viscosity of each slurry sample was measured simultaneously by both viscometers, and the results were compared. With this technique, it was found that all of the silica-slurry samples tested were in the Newtonian flow regime for up to 70% (by weight) solids. Methocel and Cellosize polymer solutions showed clear non-Newtonian behavior using this technique. This confirmed that non-Newtonian behavior of the silica slurries, if present, would have been detected by this arrangement.

Methane ignitions continue to be a major concern to the longwall mining industry. In spite of numerous advances in technology over the past decade, there has not been a measurable reduction in the number of longwall face ignitions. These ignitions will continue to be a problem as deeper and gassier seams are mined, as production rates are increased through numerous improvements in longwall mining equipment, and as the output of the workforce increases due to improved management-labor relations. It is necessary to know methane liberations, emissions, and flow patterns in order to effectively deal with it and to design control technology to reduce the occurrence of longwall face ignitions. A cooperative research project between the Bureau of Mines and the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET) has been established to address longwall methane problems. The initial direction of this work was to look at methane flow patterns during the entire longwall mining process, and more specifically to examine and compare methane levels and flow patterns for advance and retreat methods of longwall mining. Both advance and retreat longwall mining is practiced in the Sydney coal fields in Nova Scotia. In 1986, a study was performed on advancing longwall panels at the Lingan Colliery, and a similar study was recently completed at the Phalen Colliery on a retreating panel. Methane monitors were placed at various locations along the face, intake, return, and bleeder airways. Handheld methane monitors were also used upstream and downstream of the shearer mining machine. This setup allowed a determination of methane sources on the longwall panels, including: liberation from cutting with the shearer mining machine, emissions from the coal seam along the face, emissions from the gob area, and methane already in the intake air. The results from both studies are reported and the differences between the two longwall mining methods compared.

The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed an inflatable feed-tube seal (IFTS) for high-expansion foam generators. The IFTS is a lightweight, portable, rectangular inflatable bag that can be used by firefighters to rapidly seal large openings, such as those in underground mines, and to simultaneously provide a feed-tube for a high-expansion foam generator. Thus allows fire fighting foam to freely flow to the fire site and control or extinguish the fire. Studies indicated that a high-expansion foam plug will travel 183 m (600 ft) down an entry with a 4.5% rise in elevation, before leakage of foam from around the inflatable partition.

Power cable costs are only a small part of total mining costs. So many mine operators consider power cable failure and resultant downtime as part of the cost of doing business. But, viewed in terms of lost production, these costs can be quite significant. Now one company, Cablec, seeks to cut cable costs by upgrading the polymer compounding process used to make cable insulating and semiconducting materials. Cablec is the leading manufacturer of electrical power cables in North America. And with about a third of the market, Cablec is the largest supplier of power cable to the mining industry in the United States. To improve its products, Cable has entered the polymer compounding business. In July, it began producing insulator and semiconductor polymer compounds at its plant in Indianapolis, IN. "This new facility provides a quantum leap over conventional compounding methods," said Harry C. Schell, Cablec's president and chief executive officer. "The Cablec polymers plant is producing a dramatically higher standard of polymer compounds that provide significantly higher levels of performance and improved life cycle costs for power cable." Cablec faces tough foreign competition in the wire and cable business. Competing on price alone is difficult, particularly when foreign producers are state subsidized. So Cablec feels the best way to compete is to establish new quality production standards. The company's new polymers plant is one way to do this. By increasing purity control and uniformity in polymer compounding, Cablec says its power cables will last longer and fail less often. A typical medium voltage cable consists of a conductor, conductor shield, insulation, insulation shield, metal shield, and jacket. The conductor shield and the insulation shield are conducting polymers. Contaminants and imperfections can occur within the insulation, at the conductor shield/insulation interface, or at the insulation shield/ insulation interface. Over time, these contaminants and imperfections can decrease the electrical strength of the cable or cause premature cable failure. The effort to minimize the number and size of any possible contaminants begins with pure polymer compounds mixed in a clean facility. However, most power cable manufacturers manually handle raw materials, use ethylene/propylene (EP) in bulk bales, and mix polymercompounds in open Banbury mixers. The quality and uniformity of polymer compounds is also impacted by temperature variations in the mixing process. This results in wide gradations of product consistency from batch to batch and ultimately contributes to power cable failure. Cablec says the improved polymer compounds from its state-of-the-art plant will be the purest and most consistent insulating and semiconducting materials available. The plant itself RCA spent $18 million to build Cablec's Indianapolis plant. RCA used the facility to mix specialty polymer compounds used to make video disks. RCA had two considerations in mind for the plant, cleanliness and uniformity of the compounds. However, when the video disk market failed to materialize, RCA sold the 46.5 dam 2 (50,000 sq ft) plant to Cablec for $3.1 million. Cablec invested an additional $3 million for modifications and increased production capabilities. Today's replacement cost for such a facility is estimated at $30 million. Cablec says the plant will set a new standard for performance and be economically difficult to duplicate anywhere. One of the essential elements of the plant's clean process environment is the air intake system. It filters contaminants greater than 2 um, less than one-fiftieth the current industry standard. All material handling and conveying areas in the facility are air-locked. This keeps out contaminants such as smoke, dust, and pollen. Banks of pneumatic pumps move polymer components through the system and continually filter the air. The plant also has a backup air intake system. No process downtime due to pump failure here. From the time raw material enters the plant, it is stored, transported, and processed in filtered air by an airtight stainless steel system. The stainless steel resists rust and corrosion. This further eliminates the danger of contamination from paint or rust particles in the conveyance network. During foundry sand reclamation process development, molds formed from reclaimed chromite sand showed a rapid decline in tensile strength during thermal cycling tests. Because this characteristic could limit reuse of chromite sand in the foundry, the sand was examined in detail. Scanning electron microscopy, x-ray mapping, magnetic susceptibility, and x-ray diffraction were utilized to evaluate processed chromite sand. It was found that process variables such as binder composition, reclamation temperature, and processing method had a significant effect on the chromite sand particle surface. X-ray diffraction indicated a crystallographic change in the processed sands. Magnetic susceptibility also increased after processing. Diffusion of iron to the particle surface and increased surface roughness were identified as potential causes of the decreased tensile strength in the molds.

The exact date of man's first use of coal is lost in antiquity. The discovery that certain black rock would burn was undoubtedly accidental and probably occurred independently and many times in the world over thousands of years. It is quite likely that these independent discoveries were made when primitive man chanced to build camp fires on exposed ledges of a black rock, then was amazed when it caught fire. The Chinese recorded the use of coal 1100 years before the Christian Era and from the Bible we learn that King Solomon was familiar with coal in what is now Syria. In Wales, there .is evidence that the Bronze Age people used coal for funeral pyres, and it is known that the Romans used this fuel. There are other ancient references. So the knowledge that coal would burn, and even some uses of that knowledge, go back thousands of years. However, practical and consistent use of coal seems to date to England in the Middle Ages.

The Prairie Creek intrusion, near Murfreesboro, AR, is the site of the most famous diamond mine in North America. Three major rock types are associated with the intrusion-a hypabyssal peridotite, a volcanic breccia in which the majority of diamonds occur, and tuft. Previous studies, including geological, geophysical, petrological, and whole-rock and mineral chemistry are reviewed. The recent suggestion, by other workers, that this intrusion may be more correctly called a lamproite is examined. This has serious implications for diamond exploration in Arkansas and elsewhere in the US.

Since plant start-up in January 1983, Golden Sunlight Mines Inc. has implemented several process changes and improvements. Among these are a pulp preaeration circuit and a sand tailing retreatment circuit. The preaeration circuit reduces reagent consumption during gold dissolution. The sand tailing retreatment circuit was added to recover and process separately pyrite concentrate to maintain acceptable overall gold recoveries with the more refractory sulfide ores. Research and plant operating data along with process and improvement descriptions are presented.

Since 2016, electromagnetic interference (EMI) of personal dust monitors (PDMs) with magnetic proximity detection systems (PDSs) has been observed in underground coal mines. The EMI causes the magnetic field measurements of a PDS to change, which, in turn, alters the calculated location of the miner relative to the machine. Any altered location calculation can potentially cause the PDS to fail to warn a worker who is at an unsafe distance from the machine, arousing a serious concern on safety hazard caused by EMI in underground mines. The search for EMI mitigation strategies led to the development and use of large shielding pouches and boxes to hold the entire PDM to reduce its magnetic emission. Research on these pouches and boxes found that although they were able to reduce the emitted radiation from the PDM, they also disturbed the magnetic field of the PDS, affecting its performance. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have focused on shielding internal PDM components rather than shielding the entire PDM. The PDM air pump motor is one of the PDM components that has been identified as a major source of electromagnetic radiation and has been selected for further study and tests. The measurements show that a small copper or aluminum foil enclosure can effectively reduce the magnetic emission of the motor by between 50 and 85% at 73 kHz. This study compares the test results of the air pump motor with various cost-effective shielding materials. The data provided in this paper can serve as a reference for shielding enclosure design of the PDM air pump motor to reduce its electromagnetic emission as one form of EMI mitigation strategy.
