Knowledge of fracture systems in oil or gas reservoirs is essential to the efficiency of both primary and secondary production operations. A relationship was established between structural features of the surface and both natural and induced fractures in oil and gas reservoirs, thus providing a method of predicting the direction of rock fracture prior to field development and well completion. Correlations between the surface features and under-ground fractures resulted from analysis of joint strike measurements, bottom-hole impression packer surveys, photographs of hydraulically fractured wells, fracture data from oriented cores, in situ strain measurements from formation outcrops, and lineament analyses from aerial photographs. The mean orientation of surface fractures, lineaments, and stress field directions ranged from N 53° E to N 73° E, compared with an average orientation of N 63° E for the hydraulically induced fractures. Tectonic stress field was shown to influence the direction of hydraulically induced fractures. This report presents the details and application of techniques to obtain the orientation of the principal horizontal compressive stress field component and thus the direction of induced fractures.

Provide exhaust face ventilation to remotely-controlled continuous mining machines making extended advances without exposing workers to unsupported roof. Approach Modify the sprayfan to move additional air to and from the coal mine face. Unmodified, sprayfans are capable of ventilating the face with 20-foot brattice setbacks. Additional sprays on the rear of the mining machine allow setbacks to be extended up to 40 feet.

In this Bureau of Mines report, use of the photoemission of electrons to produce electric charges for the electrostatic separation of sonic dispersed minerals, which had previously been ground to pass a 43µ-opening sieve, is demonstrated. It appears that many of the oxides, carbonates, sulfides, and arsenides will respond to photoemission. Minerals least responsive are the oxides of silicon, the oxides of aluminum, and minerals that have a high concentration of these oxides. Although several synthetic ore mixtures did not yield to complete separation in a one-stage operation, it is probable that preliminary neutralization of the initial electric charges produced by powder dispersion will provide complete separation. That the separation can be carried out in air and without the use of reagents or heating, which are required in the present practice of electrostatically separating coarse granular feeds, is of special significance.

Continuously monitor air-borne radon daughters that are a hazard to underground miners. Approach A beta detector continuously counts beta activity collected on a filter paper to allow calculation of exposure in working level units. How It Works At each Site a constant flow pump draws mine air through a fiberglass filter located in front of a beta detector (pancake type Geiger Mueller tube), Radioactive particles (products of the radon 222 gas emanating from the mine walls) collect on the filter and decay, releasing alpha and beta particles as well as gamma rays. A portion of the beta particles penetrate the Geiger tube window and create electrical pulses in the tube. These pulses are then amplified and sent by a coaxial type or shielded electrical cable to a central monitor located some distance from a working level detector. Continuous remote sensing of methane concentration in underground mines. Approach A methane transducer, developed as a fixed point rib-or face-mounted operating device, measures ambient levels of methane and produces a signal that is proportional to the measured concentration. How It Works The methane transducer, developed under contract for the Bureau of Mines, uses a catalytic-type sensor which will detect methane concentration. The transducer is mounted vertically, as shown. This type of mounting minimizes dust accumulation on the sensing element, which might cause degraded operation. The unit must not be located in an area where water can continuously drip or run on It. The transducer generates an electrical signal proportional to methane concentration at the sensor. A sensor failure output indicates the status of the sensing element A circuit within the methane transducer detects whether the sensing element is shorted or open. A high signal (approximately 8 Vdc) on the failure output Indicates the sensor element is operating In Its normal range. A low output (less than 1 Vdc) indicates an element fault. Illegitimate loads on a mine dc power distribution system can be detected by measuring a superimposed ac current. To implement such a scheme, a 10-volt, 3-kHz voltage is applied at each dc power substation. By this means, the mine dc power distribution network, consisting of a feeder and trolley wires with a grounded rail return, is caused to serve also as a 3-kHz ac distribution network.

"The economic features of coal mining must take into account the drain on the man power. Study over a recent 5-year period reveals an average yearly loss of 2,125 underground men, of whom 1,182 are killed by falls of roof and coal, and according to recent data compiled by the Bureau of Mines it is estimated that 54,000 men sustain lost—time disabling injuries from the same cause.Under normal activity of the mines approximately 50 lives are taken by falls of roof during every 10 days the mines are operated, or 5 persons are killed per day, which, at a compensation charge of $5,000 each, amounts to $25,000 per day. Add to this the similar number killed by causes other than by falls of roof and we have $50,000 as an approximate daily fatality charge for each day the mines operate. On the basis of 200 working days per year, this amounts to the alarming figure of $10,000,000 annually. An investment at 5 per cent to yield this amount would require $200,000,000, which is equivalent to a capital investment of $0.40 per ton of coal, produced annually, on the basis of 500 million tons. These figures apply only to fatalities for which a fixed or stated amount is paid for compensation and do not include the compensation and hospitalization paid for the approximately 103,000 upon whom idleness is enforced by a lost-time disability injury. In one State having an annual production equal to approximately 30 per cent of the total bituminous production of the United States, the most recent data shows that for each fatality there are eight serious injuries causing 60 days or more lost time. The frequency rate of accidents for that State is less than the average for the United States, and so a conservative comparison may be made by using the figures of that State in estimating the total serious injuries, which gives 16,000 as losing 60 days or more. The average number of underground employees in the coal mines of the United States for the past 10 years has been approximately 570,000; the annual underground fatalities amount to approximately 2,000 and non-fatalities to 108,000, or a total of 110,000, which means that one out of every 5.17 employees ,or 19.3 per cent, receives an injury which results in either a fatality or a lost-time disability; this figure in a little over five years will reach a number equivalent to 100 per cent of all underground workmen. Against this is the record of many miners who have worked 25 years or more without a lost—time disability injury, indicating that coal mining is not necessarily productive of injury or death to workers.In the matter of falls of roof, it is found that 85 to 87 per cent of all fatalities occur at the working face, face of a room or entry, or in pillar work. It is at the working face that the greatest roof hazards are encountered, and when about 75 per cent of the underground employees spend approximately 90 per cent of their working hours at the face, it is logical that there is where injury is most likely to occur.Although the roof hazards may vary in different beds of coal, experience has proved that roof hazards can be successfully controlled in all coal mines, essentially regardless of the character of the roof if constant care and attention are given by the management and employees in applying the principle of safety. In almost every mining district some companies maintain an extremely low frequency rate of injury, whereas in the same district with essentially the same roof conditions the opposite is true.A study has recently been made of a number of reports upon fatalities in one district of one of the principal coal—producing States and it showed that 50 lives had been lost at 23 mines as the result of falls of roof or sides. These reports were made by the mine officials, safety engineers, and safety committees and an attempt was made to give both the cause and the person or factor responsible for the fatality. Approach A heat activated stench/tracer gas system was developed which automatically releases the gas mixture into the mine ventilation air. How It Works A canister approximately 12 inches long and 3 inches in diameter is charged with 50 grams of ethyl mercaptan or other appropriate stench gas and 500 grams of instrument detectable Freon. The canister is then pressurized to 100 psi with nitrogen. A disc is used to seal the contents of the canister. A low-temperature alloy designed to melt at a predetermined temperature is used to restrain a spring loaded plunger. Upon exposure to heat, the alloy melts and the plunger is released. The Bureau of Mines, in its investigations of respiratory apparatus for use in mines and allied industries; tests equipment that is voluntarily submitted by manufacturers in accordance with published schedules of tests. These tests are designed to insure that the equipment has the minimum requirements for safety in use. Approval certificates are issued for apperatus that meets the bureau's specifications, and the manufacturer is permitted to mark his equiment with a seal showing that it has been approved as "Permissible." A complete list of per- missible self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus, gas masks, and hose masks tested prior to January 1, 1930, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 62309. The present list includes all equipment tested and approved prior to July 1, 1930.

Determine the minimum waterflow rate needed for effective control of dust produced by cutting machines used to mine water-soluble ores. Approach Conventional wet-bar cutting techniques were studied to evaluate their dust control performance, and the optimum water flow needed for dust suppression was determined. Wet-bar type cutting techniques are used to help control mine dust by keeping the cutting chain wet. As the chain cuts the kerf, it dampens the dust produced by the cutting action at the point of generation. The Bureau, under contract, evaluated three basic wet-bar techniques, as shown in the diagram: water-trickle system A uses a gravity-feed or low-pressure (less than 50 psi) pump to send water through the bar and to discharge it at the bar tip. In laboratory tests and actual mining conditions, the shearer-clearer has proved to be an effective dust control technique. Recent field experience however, has indicated that not enough technical information is available on proper installation of the improved shearer-clearer. This Technology News will provide details of the Improvements made to the shearer-clearer and provide guidelines for installing the system. How It Works The shearer-clearer system consists of several strategically-mounted water sprays and one or more passive barriers. The sprays redirect the airflow around the shearer into both a clean and a contaminated split. The sprays confine the contaminated split or dust cloud to the coal face, allowing the shearer operators to remain in the clean split on the walkway

"Three men lost their lives in the Black Diamond Coal Mine near Seattle, Wash., recently while wearing oxygen breathing apparatus. The press dispatches stated that these men lost their lives while practicing with the apparatus. Later reports stated that the men died while attempting to make a trip 1200 feet down a 25 degree slope which was filled with black damp, in order to measure the amount of water that had accumulated at the bottom of the mine, and the trip was attempted with oxygen in the tanks of the apparatus with dials indicating only 45 minutes supply. The oxygen in the tank was used up and the men therefore lost their lives from a deficiency of air to breathe.In spite of all the education and training done by the Government to prevent accidents, men are prone occasionally to take unnecessary chances. Every piece of apparatus, no matter how perfect, has its limitations. The Government, through the agency of the Bureau of Mines, has trained many thousands of miners in the use of mine rescue apparatus. The training has been given to all miners who requested it, and the Bureau has gone to the extreme of urging miners to join the rescue and first-aid classes. In spite of all the efforts of the Government, men occasionally attempt the impossible."

Since 1969, the Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines, has carried out communications research. Research has been directed toward developing emergency and nonemergency mine communications. This paper gives an overview of the progress made in the last two years. Particular emphasis is given to the overall program, noise and signal measurements, systems studies, guidelines, products, and demonstrations now being carried on in operating mines.

One mineral deposit in the Golden Trout Wilderness has potential. The currently producing Pine Tree Mine on the Little Kern River has an estimated 120,000 tons (109,000 t) each of indicated and inferred reserves averaging 0.77 percent tungsten trioxide. No apparent potential exists for base or precious metal or other mineral deposits. INTRODUCTION The Golden Trout Wilderness, established by Congress in 1978 under Public Law 95-237, encompasses 240,000 acres (97,000 ha) of conifer-forested, rolling, upland plateau at the headwaters of the Kern River in Inyo and Sequoia National Forests (fig. 1). Abundant streams locally contain Golden Trout, namesake of the area. Major roads serve the area to the west and east of the Wilderness; access is poor to the north and south.

Crude shale oil prepared by gas-combustion retorting of Colorado oil shale was hydrogenated over a cobalt molybdate catalyst at an operating pressure of 1,000 psig, temperatures of 781° and 761° F, and liquid hourly space velocities of 0.10 and 0.05 Vo/Vo/hr, respectively. The yields of total liquid products and the amounts of nitrogen and sulfur removed were comparable with those obtained at an operating pressure of 3,000 psig and a liquid hourly space velocity of 1.0 Vo/Vo/hr. Approximately 1.5 times as much gasoline was produced at the lower pressure and space velocities.

Eliminate the need for roof bolter operators and their helpers to work under unsupported roof while setting or removing temporary supports before or during the roof bolting cycle-a task that annually accounts for approximately 20 percent of all roof fall fatalities. Approach The Bureau of Mines designed, built, and field tested an auto-mated temporary roof support (ATRS) that can be carried from place to place on the drill head of a single, fixed-head roof bolting machine (squirmer) used in low coal seams (less than 42 inches thick). How It Works The ATRS is designed for installation on any streamlined squirmer. It consists of a ten? foot-long, steel, wide-flange beam supported by two double-acting, telescoping hydraulic cylinders. In the past, mine management has been concerned with removing water from active mining sections primarily because it hampered the movement of mining equipment and aggravated the working condition of the miners. Pumping water to sumps and gravity drainage by ditching have proven successful in mines for minimizing section down time due to water influx. However, with the advent of more strict pollution laws the mining engineer must now be concerned with keeping water out of the section and also with preventing it from causing pollution. A review of the handbooks and textbooks used in the mining engineering curricula reveals that little has been written concerning acid mine water prevention or control in underground coal mines. Additionally, the review of the curricula of mining schools indicates they are not teaching the engineering students the necessary techniques of mine water management as they relate to the abatement of mine water pollution.

To rapidly and dependably locate shorts and opens in mining equipment power cables. Approach: The approximate locations of faults are found using a sound pulse echo, then the faults are exactly located with one of two probes. How It Works: To approximately locate u fault in shielded or unshielded cable, the cable is disconnected from the mine power center, and connected to the sound pulse generator. The generator is also connected to the ground conductor of the cable. When the generator is energized, electrical pulses are transmitted, and each moves along the conductor until it reaches a fault. When a pulse reaches the fault an echo returns to the instrument, either a positive pulse if the fault is an open, or a negative pulse if the fault is a short. See Figure 1. The further along the cable the first fault is from the instrument, the longer it takes for the echo to return. The instrument automatically measures the time and calculates the distance. The distance in feet is shown on an illuminated digital display.

The methane gas emitted from coal samples collected from the conveyor belts dumping into silos was measured by the Bureau of Mines. Approximately 50 pct of the total gas desorbed into a sealed can within 1 week was released during the first 24 hours. No simple correlation between the gassiness of the coal stored and the methane concentration in the silo open space above the coal was found. This was probably because the gassier coals were stored in open-top silos, which were better ventilated. Although the methane concentration in the open space above the coal pile was less than 1 pct for all 34 silos investigated, a methane measurement in the coal pile showed that high methane concentrations can exist. The methane released in the pile appears to accumulate and not liberate freely into the open space above the coal pile. Probably this gas is released during reclaiming operations, but further research is required to substantiate this claim.
