"Although known since 1902, the Capitan iron deposits have not been mined, mainly because of the low grade of the ore. Only a small amount of exploratory work has been done since the discovery. C. H. Johnson, district engineer of the Bureau of Mines in New Mexico in 1942-45, visited the property; as a result, preliminary sampling of the property was done in 1943.3/ Owing to the results of this preliminary work, an extensive development program by wagon drilling was planned and executed early in 1944.4/ Equipment available at that time was limited in the depths that could be reached; and, as geologic studies indicated the possibility that other limestone beds below the surface might have been replaced by iron minerals, a supplementary development program by churn drilling to reach greater depths was prosecuted in late 1947 and early 1948, with the author as project engineer.The following sections note the location and accessibility of the deposits and mention the physical features, climate, labor and living conditions. Property and ownership are outlined, the history and production of the property stated briefly, and the ore deposits are described. The work done by the Bureau of Mines is explained and supported with maps, sections, and assay logs.From March 1, 1944, to June 1, 1944, 179 wagon-drill holes totaling 3,490 feet and 4 test pits totaling 75 feet were completed, and from November 1947 to February 1948 seven churn-drill holes totaling 2,488 feet were drilled and sampled. Metallurgical tests are summarized and referenced.With respect to this report, special acknowledgment is due to J. H. Hedges, chief, Tuscon, Ariz., Branch, Mining Division, and to W. R. Storms, engineer in-charge of the Silver City, N. Mex., field office. Acknowledgment also is due to J. Mex., as shown on figures 1 and 2. The only known large deposit upon which the Bureau did development work lies around the common corner of secs. 10, 11, 14, and 15, as shown in figures 2 and 3, and just southwest of and in the foothills of the Capitan Mountains. This range of mountains trends east and west. The elevation of the highest peak is 10,205 feet.The deposits are reached by traveling on State Highway 48 from Capitan north for 4 miles, to a point just inside the Lincoln National Forest fence and thence due east over a poor dirt road for 1.2 miles. Just over a small wooden bridge, the left-fork is taken, and the poor road is followed to the deposits, a further distance of 1.1 miles (see fig. 1). This road follows the fence to and through the Davis ranch. All the roads from Capitan to the deposits are dirt roads but are impassable only for short periods during and after heavy rain or snow."

No producing mines are in the study area. Sample results indicate the only resources in the study area are low grade phosphate deposits associated with Cuyama Phosphate Mine (fig. 1). Within the study area, are more than 21.4 million tons of inferred subeconomic phosphate rock resources which would be reserves at an 80 percent higher phosphoric acid price; weighted average grade is 4.84 percent phosphorous pentoxide (P205). About 17.6 million tons of similar grade are outside the area to the northwest. The South Cuyama Oil Field, adjacent to the study area (fig. 1), produces petroleum from the Vaqueros Formation which underlies parts of the study area. Oil and gas potential was evaluated by U.S. Geological Survey. INTRODUCTION Location, Size, and Geographic Setting The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of the Fox Mountain RARE II area (No. 5120) during the summer of 1981. The area was examined to determine the presence or absence of mineral resources and reserves, and to estimate tonnage and grade where possible.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a flotation-nitric acid leach procedure as part of the goal to maximize minerals and metals recovered from primary and secondary domestic resources. Studies were conducted on an ore that contained carbon-bearing and sulfide mineralization that rendered a portion of the ore refractory (resistant) to conventional leaching technology. The procedure investigated for treating the ore consisted of the following: (1) separation by flotation of the carbonaceous and sulfidic components from the ore, (2) leaching the flotation concentrate with nitric acid at 100° to 110° C, (3) leaching the flotation tailings with sulfuric acid, and (4) processing the combined leached slurries in a conventional manner to recover yellow cake. In step 2, HN03 is converted to gaseous products from which it is regenerated by reacting these products with air and water for further leaching. An overall uranium extraction of 96 pct was achieved by this procedure.

This information circular is one of a series, published by the Federal Bureau of Mines, on methods and costs of mining uranium ore on the Colorado Plateau. This report describes the relatively small-scale operations of the Salt Wash miner: The mining method followed, the equipment used, and the production costs. It describes 10 lease-operated mines of Union Carbide: Nuclear Co. that are typical of Salt Wash operations on the plateau. These mines lie within the Uravan mineral belt3/ and arc in the Gateway, Bull Canyon, and Uravan mining districts. (See fig. 1.) Generally the ore bodies occur as irregular, discontinuous layers of ore minerals within sandstone beds in the Salt Wash member of the Jurassic Morrison formation. The ore bodies sometimes occur as rolls, pod associat with carbonaceous trash, or tabular masses. Their size and erratic distribution preclude the use of a prearranged and uniform stoping system. The mining method is simply to follow the ore and leave open scopes behind.

The only known large deposits of talc in Alabama occur near Winterboro, Talladega County. Preliminary examinations were made, and work by the Bureau of Mines was recommended. The deposits were investigated to determine the amount and grade of talc present and to search for new talc deposits in the general area. Seventy-five holes, totaling 3370.4 feet, were drilled with Government-owned core drills from August 1, 1948, to February 11, 1949, and 27 samples were taken for assay. This report presents the factual data disclosed by drilling and the results of beneficiation of the talc.

Hydrogen sulfite has been listed (1)3/ as a possible hazard in 50 occupations, many of which are in the mineral industries. The effects of its occurrence in the petroleum industry made themselves felt more than two decades ago, resulting in a comprehensive study (2) of the toxic gases from Mexican and other high-sulfur petroleum products. The mining industry, likewise, has had cause to guard against this gas. Enough hydrogen sulfide has been found in coal and some noncoal mines during normal operations to cause severe eye irritation, some serious illness, end even fatalities. It is usually a product of the decomposition of sulfur compounds and may be produced by burning explosives containing sulfur; the gas in harmful qauntities is formed by the use of block blasting powder or by the use of dynamite in blasting sulfide ores. Hydrogen sulfide is readily soluble in water, and enough may be released from water streams in coal and noncoal mining to cause fatal poisoning it is found sometimes in stagnant water underground, particularly where ventilation currents are absent, and great care must be exercised when accumulations of such waters are disturbed, as exposure to comparatively low concentrations of the gas evolved therefrom has caused fatal accidents.

"Compliance standards for respirable dust, which are reduced because of high quart: concentrations, have become an industry-wide problem. Research on the physical and chemical character of quart-classified particles in respirable coal mine dusts indicates that they may exist in intermixed layers or may be coated by clay or coal material. The relative amount of intermixing varies with the coal seam being mined. If most of the quart: particles of a mine dust are ""pure,"" then the dust may have a high fibrogenic risk potential because of truly free silica and the compliance standard should be lowered. lf, however, quart: is locked inside another material matrix, or coated, a reduced compliance standard may not be appropriate.Although much research has been done on coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) over the past decades, the etiologic agents of the disease still have not been pinpointed. The predominant methods of characterizing respirable coal mine dusts were bulk analysis techniques for determination of elemental and mineralogical concentrations, the results of which were used in statistical analyses to determine relationships between dust composition and the occurrence of CWP. These methods are incapable of finding the etiologic agents in the dust primarily because of complicated and confounding physiochemical factors, which may be discovered if the focus of characterization was done on a dust particle level.The SEM/EDXA-based research discussed here shows a significant difference in the number of ""pure"" quartz particles in respirable dusts collected from different mines. Some of the results have been reported previously (Grayson, Andre, and Simonyi, 1988). Concurrent research by other investigators (Wallace et al., 1989) demonstrates an SEM/EDXA-based methodology to pinpoint the location of the ""contaminating"" substance(s ) in a quartz-classified particle. The research of the European Economic Community has also begun analyses on the respirable-dust-particle level (Robock and Bauer, 1988).Since the compensatory and intangible costs of CWP are substantial in the United States, it is important that the etiologic agents be determined and then either controlled or neutralized in a cost-effective way. This line of research is especially important consid-ering the forecasted. near-term growth of coal production and the evolution of high productivity longwall panels (an immediate problem in compliance) and continuous mining sections ( a probable future problem).This need has been accentuated now that nearly all respirable dust samples submitted to MSHA are analyzed for free silica (Tomb, Parobeck, and Gem, 1986). Today a real problem exists in the coal industry, both underground and surface, because of high quartz levels in respirable dusts causing substantially reduced compliance standards (Murphy, 1989).The combined results of the respirable dust particle investigators indicate that conventional bulk sample analyses may not faithfully represent the amount of biologically available or active quartz in all mines with a high level (greater than 5% ) of quartz in the dust For example, some mine dusts might contain predominantly occluded (or coated) quartz particles where bulk analysis would result in anomalously high ""free silica"" measurements. The same result would occur when quartz particles are intermixed substantially with other minerals that can alter the surface of the composite particle away from a quartz-behaving character."

Research was done to determine if a hydraulically operated penetrometer developed by the Bureau of Mines could be used to estimate the roof-bolt anchorage capacity of mine roof rock. Tests were conducted both in the laboratory using cement cylinders and underground in shale rock. Hardness readings were measured by the penetrometer around the periphery of the bolt holes at the anchorage horizon. Roof bolts Nere then installed and subjected to an anchorage test. The results showed that the penetrometer readings could be used to determine the optimum stratum for roof-bolt anchorage but could not be used to make an accurate estimate of the anchorage capacity.

The Bureau of Mines constructed a microminer--a scaled-down (5-by 5- by 11-foot) continuous-mining machine of the drum type with a unique triaxially controlled head--for use in a research program to study the effects of continuous-mining-machine parameters on the generation of respirable dust. This report describes field research with the microminer at the Bureau's Experimental Mine at Bruceton, Pa. Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of depth of cut, rotational speed, and sump and shear rates on the generation of respirable dust. The cutting forces were also monitored and compared with depth of cut. There appears to be a reduction in the amount of respirable dust generated when the depth of cut is increased or rotational is speed lowered, Variation of other machine parameters seems to have little effect on dust generation.

"The adsorption and wetting behavior of freshly ground and aged coals has been determined in the presence of a nonionic surfactant. The amount of surfactant adsorption changes with the concentration and ""age"" of the coal. The freshly ground coal has smaller amounts of adsorption at lower surfactant concentrations than the ""aged"" coal whereas at large surfactant concentrations, the order is reversed . In the latter case, more surfactant is adsorbed on fresh coal than on the ""aged"" coal . . It is proposed that at low concentrations, the surfactant adsorbs through both hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions with the molecule lying parallel to the· surface, whereas at higher concentrations surface micelles form at the hydrophobic sites. The wetting behavior correlates well with the adsorption behavior.INTRODUCTIONNonionic surfactants have many applications in the coal and mineral processing industry. They can be used as dispersing agents to modulate flotation, flocculation and filtration of particulates (1). They can also be used to increase the wettability of hydrophobic solids such as coal and can hence be used as dust suppressants (2,3). Although the adsorption of representative nonionic surfactants such as Triton N-101 (an ethoxylated nonylphenol with 9.5 moles of ~thylene oxide and HLB equal to 13.4) have been studied extensively on substrates such as calcium carbonate (4), silica (5) carbon black (6) and graphite (7), very few studies are available for coals. Coals differ from other substrates with respect to two important characteristics: 1) coal are porous and 2) coals consist of a patchwork of hydrophobic and hydrophilic sites (8). Since the adsorption characteristics of a surfactant are influenced significantly by the nature of the substrate the characteristics of the coals must be taken into consideration."

"Freshly ground and aged anthracite and bituminous coal samples were investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy to detect the presence, concentration and reactivity of free radicals. Freshly ground anthracite coal produced greater concentration of free radicals than the bituminous coal, and the radical reactivity was also greater for the anthracite. The reactivity of the newly produced free radicals in the anthracite dust correlated with the dust's toxicity. Furthermore similar coal-based free radicals were detected in the lung tissue of autopsied coal miners, suggestive of persistent reactivity by the embedded coal dust leading to the progressive disease process. Results of the studies on the severity of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) and free radical concentration m lung tissue support this hypothesis.INTRODUCTIONCOAL WORKERS' PNEUMOCONIOSIS (CWP) has been an important topic of concern to miners, mining engineers, epidemiologists and medical researchers for decades. It is well known that the prevalence and severity of CWP differ markedly between different regions and mines despite comparable exposures to respirable dust (REISNER and RoBOCK, 1977; HURLEY et al., 1979). These variations in pathogenicity of coal mine dusts can only partially be explained by differences in the mineral composition and by rank of coal (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al., 1980). Cytotoxity studies on mammalian cells do not correspond well with the human disease pattern (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al.,1980; VALL YA THAN et al., 1988). For example, while epidemiological studies of coal miners (REISNER and ROBECK, 1977; HURLEY et al., 1979) indicate that the prevalence of CWP correlates roughly with the rank of coal, such correlation has not yet been established in biological studies, despite considerable effort (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al., 1980). In order to help resolve this apparent paradox we have undertaken a systematic study to evaluate whether any correlation exists between the concentration of free radicals present in fresh or aged coal dusts from two well-characterized U.S. coals. This study was also prompted in part by observations reported in the literature that organic free radicals can be formed on the surface of freshly fractured coals (LEBEDEV et al., 1978; DULIBA and CLARKSON, 1984). In particular, ARTEMOV and REZNIK (1980) noted that the decay lifetimes and, hence, the reactivity of the organic free radicals formed on crushing Russian coals, .depended"

This paper describing the mining practices at the Teck-Hughes mines at Kirkland Lake, Ontario, is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in various mining districts. HISTORY Prospecting was begun in the neighborhood of Kirkland Lake in 1906, but staking did not take place until 1911. Gold-bearing veins were discovered by surface trenching in 1913 on the mining claims which now make up the Teck-Hughes Gold Mines (Ltd.). A small mill was erected in 1916 after the completion of some underground exploration. A transmission' line was built in 1917 to the camp to provide adequate power for a vigorous underground campaign. Also in 1917 the present management took control operations since 1916 have been continuous,' with a steady increase in production to date.

This paper, which describes the milling practice at the Page concentrator of the Federal Mining and Smelting Co., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The Page mine and mill are located on Silver Creek, 3 miles west of Kellogg, Idaho, and 1 mile south of United States Highway No. 10. Supplies and concentrates are hauled by truck over an automobile road which connects Highway No. 10 with the property. The concentrator has capacity to treat 300 tons of ore per day and utilizes all-flotation methods of treatment. Power is supplied from the main line of the Washington Water Power Co. which runs from Spokane, Wash., to Kellogg, Idaho. Water is obtained from the mine and also from a well which is situated 1 mile distant from the concentrator and about 600 feet in elevation below the concentrator.

"This paper presents an analysis of respiraple dust generation due to the action of a continuous miner. Underground coal cutting by a drum-type continuous miner was simulated in the laboratory using a specially designed unique automated rotary coal cutting simulator (ARCCS). An analysis of -400 mesh particles was done on gravity collected material. Samples of entrained dust were collected through the use of cascade impactors. Both samples were analyzed for size distribution and particle shape. Using the simulated coal cutter permitted variation of operating and in-situ parameters to provide information on the effects on generation of -400 mesh particles. In these tests coal blocks with an approximate dimension of 18 in. x 15 in. x 6 in. (45.7 cm x 38.1 cm x 15.2 cm) were first subjected to confining pressures, equivalent to in-situ conditions. Such blocks were then cut by the cutting head of the ARCCS, thus simulating the action of the continuous miner in underground coal mining. During the tests under a particular set of in-situ and operating parameters a number of other parameters such as 1) penetration of bit into coal, 2) penetration resistance (thrust and cutting pressures), 3) rotating velocity of cutting head, and 4) acoustic emission activity in the coal block were monitored. After each cutting cycle the fractured surfaces were photo¬graphed and a velocity survey was conducted by using a sonic technique. At the end of each experiment the cutting paths of the bits in coal were photographed using an optical microscope with an attached camera.IntroductionThe continuous-mining machines introduced in the 1950's now account for more than half the production of coal from underground mines. Unfortunately, these continuous miners, designed for increased productivity, have also increased the concentration of respirable dust in mines. As a result, the Federal Coal sine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted to enforce on the coal operators that the airborne respirable dust not exceed 2 mg/m3, and was intended to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumo-coniosis. This plus the other aspects of the legislation and the subsequent monitoring and enforcement by MSHA made it very imperative that the coal operators provide a relatively healthier and safer working environment for the coal miners. Since 1970, the Federal government has paid over 11.7 billion dollars to more than 470,000 miners with coal workers pneumoconiosis and their survivors (Newmeyer, 1981). These regulations, coupled with the assessment of the continuing burden on miners, the mining industry and taxpayers appear to have provided an impetus for the mining community towards comprehending the different parameters that influence dust generation and entrainment."

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a dependable and economic method for recovering spodumene and mica from pegmatites of the type found in Gaston County, N. C. Laboratory batch tests and continuous flotation tests were made by the Federal Bureau of Mines to determine the feasibility of treating the ore by flotation to recover high-grade spodumene and mica concentrates. The spodumene flotation circuit yielded concentrates containing 6.50 percent lithia (Li20), with an overall recovery of 81.8 percent of the lithia in the ore, The mica circuit yielded concentrates containing 97.5 percent mica, with a recovery of 82.5 percent of the mica in the spodumene tailing.

The galvanic corrosion properties of titanium in contact with commercially pure aluminum, copper, or type 302 stainless steel in some of the common organic acids were investigated. Acids used in these experiments were 10 percent formic, acetic, lactic, citric; 1 percent oxalic and tartaric; and 9 percent oxalic. Electrode-potential measurements and several types of galvanic couple experiments were carried out. Solutions were aerated by three methods: Flow of air, flow of helium, and natural aeration. Work was done at 35° C. with couples consisting of equal areas of the 2 metals. Titanium was resistant to corrosion in most of the organic acids studied, whether alone or in contact with a dissimilar metal. However, titanium coupled with aluminum did corrode in 1- and 9-percent oxalic acid solutions. Contact with titanium usually caused aluminum to corrode by galvanic action. Copper was subject to galvanic attack in 10-percent acetic acid with a flow of air. Contact with aluminum to some solutions in which titanium is ordinarily inert and noble with respect to aluminum caused titanium to corrode

[Gypsum is one of the most important nonmetallic c minerals, as is indicated by the fact that the United States consumed approximately 3,500,000 tons of natural and calcined gypsum in 1937. The building trades were the largest users required 2,520,000 tons of calcine for production of plaster, wall board, tiles, block, and various other insulating and building materials. The glass and ceramic industries and other manufacturers required an additional 126,000 tons. The balance was used in the uncalcined condition as retarder in Portland cement and or agricultural purposes.]

This is the Seventh of a series of publications that describe methods and practices used in mining bituminous coal mechanically.3/ This report deals with the operation referred to in coal mining as continuous mining, and the interest shown by mining companies in this method is the reason for this study. Only continuous mining as it applies to the room-and-pillar system of mining, or a modification thereon, is discussed in detail in this report. Although not always as continuous as the name implies, it is a system of mining in which a machine is used to cut and load coal in one continuous operation without drilling and blasting the coal. With the mining equipment in most general use today, the usual cycle of operation in mining of coal is: (1) Timber, (2) cut, (3) drill, (4) blast, and (5) load. As the phases of this type cycle cannot be performed simultaneously in the same working place, it is necessary to operate from 3 to 7 working places so that at least 1 place is available for coal loading at all times. Even if the schedule of the phases in a cycle is maintained, coal production ceases during the time required to move the loading equipment from one loading place to the next. In 1920 a continuous-type mining machine4/ was installed in an Illinois coal mine to drive entries. Several other companies used these entry drivers for short periods in the following few years. In 1927 a southern Illinois coal company installed 2 of these machines which, in the next 25 years, were reported to have driven over 200 miles of entries. The machines did not attain widespread usage.

"Results of a research effort directed towards identifying and measuring the genotoxic properties of respirable particulate matter involved in mining exposures, especially those which may synergistically affect genotoxic hazard, are presented. Particulate matter emissions from a direct injection diesel engine have been sampled and assayed to determine the genotoxic potential as a function of engine operating conditions. Diesel exhaust from a caterpillar 3304 diesel engine, representative of the ones found in underground mines, rated 100 hp at 2200 rpm is diluted in a multi-tube mini-dilution tunnel and the particulate matter is collected on 70 mm fluorocarbon coated glass fiber filters as well as on S"" x 10"" hi-volume filters. A six mode steady state duty cycle was used to relate engine operating conditions to the genotoxic potential. Results to-date on diesel exhaust have indicated that use of a primary component of pulmonary surfactant as a medium for collecting and applying respirable particulate material to cells for mutagenicity testing offers a true representation of in-vivo delivery of such respired aerosols to pulmonary cells and the genetic material within. Protocols have been developed to sample and assay the diesel soot and diesel soot/mineral dust complexes which would not compromise the surf ace and physical properties of the particulate material. Evidence has been gathered to show that diesel soot expresses mutagenic potential as dispersions in DPL in the Ames tests as well as sister chromatid exchange activity in the animal lung fibroblast ·derived V79 cell line. The results are comparable to the standard solvent extraction procedure. INTRODUCTIONDiesel engines are primarily associated with transportation; however, they are also very common in the work place. Of particular concern is the use of diesel engines in mining operations. Currently there are 1,950 diesel machines working in underground coal mines throughout the country. These units are used in 151 mines encompassing nine different states (MSHA, 1991). It is believed the use of diesel powered equipment has contributed to higher productivity in these mines. However, the exhaust from diesel engines operated in underground mines has been a subject of concern during the past decade because of its suspected relationship with health aspects. The particulate matter generated by the diesel engine is of particular concern."

This paper is one of a series describing methods and costs of recovering sand and gravel from deposits in the United States and deals directly with the operations of the Atlas Sand, Gravel and Stone Co. at Farmington, Conn. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in some instances cause embarasement to individual producers, as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations may ensue.
