This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds from which samples could be obtained in Upshur County, W. Va. One of the 14 samples collected was of metallurgical quality as received, 6 could be sufficiently upgraded to provide acceptable products, and 7 could not be upgraded to metallurgical quality because of their high sulfur contents.

The Cebolla Creek titaniferous iron deposits near Powderhorn in southern Gunnison County, Colo., were examined by the Federal Bureau of Mines as part of an overall program to investigate the Nation's titanium and iron resources. The deposits occur around the periphery of the Iron Hill stock, which underlies an area of about 12 square miles. Concentrations of magnetite, ilmenite, and perovskite arc localized along fractures in the pyroxenite stock. Mineralogical studies of composite surface samples collected in 1956 showed that most of the iron is present in ilmenite-bearing magnetite. Perovskite is the chief titanium mineral in the magnetite-rich and augite-rich types, and sphene is the principal titanium mineral in the placer material. The mica-rich rock contains approximately equal amounts of perovskite, ilmenite, and sphene.

Past experience has shown that the penetration characteristics of the 10-mm nylon cyclone used on approved personal sampling equipment are significantly different from those determined in the laboratory using a nonpulsating flow source. The Bureau of Mines has developed and recommended a modification to presently approved equipment that will alleviate this difference. However, as a result of this modification, a new relationship for converting respirable dust concentrations measured with approved personal sampling equipment to equivalent concentrations as measured with an MRE instrument will have to be established. This Bureau of Mines report describes the underground sampling program conducted to establish a new factor for converting respirable dust concentrations measured with personal sampling equipment, modified with a recommended pulsation damping device, to an equivalent concentration as measured with an MRE gravimetric dust sampler.

"This information circular discusses drilling and blasting in open-cut iron-ore mines and is one of a series of papers describing iron-ore mining practices in the Lake Superior district to aid in preventing accidents in that industry.The Lake Superior district consists of the Marquette and Menominee ranges of Michigan, the Gogebic range of Michigan and Wisconsin, and the Vermilion, Mesabi, and Cuyuna range of Minnesota. Open-cut mines produce 8o percent of the iron ore mined in the district; 98 percent of the total Lake Superior district open-cut ore is produced in Minnesota and 2 percent in Michigan. The entire Wisconsin iron-ore production is from underground nines. The Mesabi range in Minnesota produced 93 percent of the open-cut iron ore and 76 percent of the total iron ore in the district in 1947.During the 8-year period 1940-47, 619,000,000 gross tons of iron ore were shipped from mines of the district, or 85 percent of the United States output. Approximately 78,000,000 gross tons of iron ore were shipped from the mines of Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin in 1947.This paper is based primarily on observations daring the period July 1947 to March 1948. Thirty-two open-cut mines were visited; 28 on the Mesabi range, 3 on the Cuyuna range, and 1 on the Marquette range. In 1947, 36,100,000 tons of iron ore was shipped from these 32 mines, or 59 percent of the open-cut ore and 46 percent of the total iron ore shipped from the district. During 1947 about 90 open-cut iron-ore mines were operating in the district, and the annual production of each ranged from 25,000 to 10,000,000 tons.Many recommendations included in this paper for improving safety and preventing injuries to employees were taken from Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7387.Data were collected under the direction of Frank E. Cash, former supervising engineer, Health and Safety Division, Bureau of Nines, Duluth, Minnesota. E. W. These formations are designated by one commonly applied name, ""iron formations.""4/The Mesabi range in northern Minnesota, about 70 miles northwest of Duluth, was opened to mining in 1892; it is the largest single source of iron ore in the United States. It is 75 miles long and, because of the gentle dip of the ore formation, it ranges in width from 1-1/2 to 3 miles.5/ The ore formation, which is nearly horizontal, has a maximum thickness of about 450 feet and is covered by a glacial drift that ranges from 10 to over 100 feet in thickness. Most of the ore is near the surface and adaptable to open-cut mining."

This report describes the exploration work done in 1941 in connection with the search for strategic minerals as authorized by the Strategic Materials Act approved by the President on June 7, 1939. It deals with the various manganese deposits and showings in the Tombstone mining district of Cochise County, Ariz. The exploration project comprised a study of the geology, mapping of the areas, and exploration of various mines and deposits by sampling old drifts, crosscuts, and scopes, supplemented by diamond drilling from underground stations. The Federal Government's manganese-purchasing programs have revived interest in occurrences such as the scattered deposits near Tombstone. Because of this, the Bureau of Mines project report on the Tombstone district, prepared originally in 1941 but not published, has been revised and now is being made public.

Gas-displacement tests were made in Berea Sandstone and Arbuckle Lime-stone cores to determine the relative permeabilities to gas, oil, and water for two-and three-phase dynamic systems. Three-phase relative permeabilities were obtained by displacing oil and water from the core with gas and measuring the flow rates of the three fluids simultaneously. It was found that relative permeabilities to fluids in a porous medium are affected by the saturation distributions of other fluids in the medium as well as by their own saturation distributions.

The Bureau of Mines customarily publishes lists of equipment meeting its safety standards to keep the mining industry informed as to the development and availability of mining equipment that can be used safely. The present list supplements Bulletin 543, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953, as well as Information Circular 7722, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved During the Calendar Years 1953-54. Because standards have been revised and new ones added by the Bureau, this list contains classes of equipment not previously covered.

Continuously monitor and record respirable dust levels underground by a reliable, sensitive, and fast-response device. Approach A light-scattering photometer, having a LED (Light Emitting Diode) light source and other significant improvements, has been designed and incorporated into a portable continuous monitor. How It Works The monitor continuously draws air into the sampling inlet through a cyclone that removes dust particles larger than respirable size. The dusty air enters the photometer vertically downward through a cylinder which is intersected by the optical system. (This cylinder appears as a circle in the drawing of the photometer.) The center of he column of dusty air intersects a beam of pulsing light from the LED, causing some of the light to be reflected, scattered, and refracted. Only the light that is scattered at an angle of about 700 from the light beam passes through a lens to the photodetector which generates an output voltage Signal proportional to the dust content in the air. 1. Reserves have been estimated for three coal beds in Bledsoe County, Tenn.: Morgan Springs, Lantana, and Sewanee. The Richland and Nelson beds occur in Bledsoe County also, but there was not enough information on them for making an estimate of reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves for all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 43 million tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 22 million tons represents coal 28 inches and more thick. Areas in the beds were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics were insufficient for making an estimate conforming with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves deter-mined by this investigation.

This section of the Minerals Yearbook reviews the minerals industries of 27 countries: the 12 nations of the European Community (Belgium, Dermark/Greenland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom); 6 of the 7 nations of the European Free Trade Association (Austria, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Sweden); Malta; the 8 Eastern European economies in transition (Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Yugoslavia); and the U.S.S.R. Western Europe Western Europe [loosely defined to include the 12 nations of the European Community (EC) and the 7 nations of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA)] is the single largest trading area and consumer of raw materials in the world. If Western Europe was at one time an important mining sector, it has now increasingly relegated the role of supplying minerals for its minerals processing industry to the more minerally endowed countries in North and South America, Africa, and Australia. In this regard, Western Europe is the most important determinant of raw materials consumption (and thus, indirectly, raw materials production). Western Europe has significant reserves of industrial minerals but has limited availability of metalliferous raw materials. It, therefore, imports significant quantities of the latter and ranks along with the United States and the U.S.S.R. in the production of refined metals. Nonetheless, there is an inherent tendency to underestimate the importance of Western Europe in the world of minerals, both as a minerals processor and raw materials buyer. The reason for this is that Western Europe is generally thought of on the basis of individual nations rather than as a whole. Viewed in this limited context, the United States, the U.S.S.R., and Japan appear to dominate the world economy. Viewed as one regional area, however, Western Europe includes the fourth (FRG), fifth (France), sixth (United Kingdom) and seventh (Italy) largest economies of the world, all bordering on one another. With the remaining 15 EC and EFTA countries, Western Europe has a land area approximately 40 % of that of the United States, exceeds the U.S. population by 50 % and has a gross domestic product about the same as that of the United States.

"For a period of several years, beginning with 1915, there has been a continuous change in the quality of motor gasoline. The average volatility has decreased, this to the fact that higher boiling fractions of the crude oil have been included in the gasoline. This change in quality was made necessary by the tremendous increase in the demand for motor fuel, caused by the development of the motor car, and during the war was an absolute necessity to avoid gasoline shortages. The Bureau of Mines has kept in close touch with this situation by making surveys from time to time of the gasolines sold throughout the country, as this information is of value to manufacturers and users of motor cars and also indicates when any changes are required in the Government specifications. The Bureau has just completed a gasoline survey and is in a position to make public the fact that there has been very little change in the quality of motor gasoline in recent months.During the period from January 17 to February 3, 1920, 81 samples of actor gasoline were collected by representatives of the Bureau of Mines in seven districts of the United States. The cities selected for this survey were New York, N. Y., including Brooklyn; Washington, D. C.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; Chicago, Ill.; New Orleans, La.; Salt Lake City, Utah; and San Francisco, Cal., including Berkeley. In every case the samples collected were taken in such a manner as to represent material actually being sold as motor fuel, and to include samples from each refinery marketing in the district."

Analysis of mining equipment fires from 1990 through 1999 reveals that there were 340 large mining equipment fires, resulting in 72 injuries and five fatalities. Many of the fires resulted in the loss of equipment and all posed potential or real risks to the operator. In 97 cases, the fires raged out of control due to engine shut­off failure, even upon activation of the machine fire suppression system, due to the spraying of pressurized hydraulic flu­id and fuel onto hot engine surfaces. In other cases, even after engine shutoff, the fires re-ignited, fueled by the contin­ued flow of flammable fluids remaining in the lines onto the hot engine surfaces. In many of the fires, flammable vapors evolved and penetrated the cab, violently igniting, forcing the operator to exit under very hazardous conditions. The use of emergency evacuation lines in the fuel and hydraulic fluid systems, and methods to reduce or prevent the spraying of pressurized fluids onto hot engine surfaces would greatly improve the chances of successfully suppressing large mining equipment fires. In addition, the use of systems for preventing the ignition of flammable vapors inside the cab, and detecting and suppressing fires originat­ing in the cab, would greatly enhance operator safety. The National Institute for Occupation Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently conducted experiments on meth­ods to reduce the fire hazards associated with large mining equipment. These experiments evaluated the use of cab inerting systems to prevent the ignition of flammable vapors inside the cab and sup­press fires originating in the cab, while maintaining a breathable atmosphere for the operator to bring the equipment to a stop and safely exit the cab.

Kroemer(1-3) and Kroemer et al.(4) define the isoinertial technique of strength assessment as one in which mass properties of an object are held constant, as in lifting a given weight over a predetermined distance. Several strength assessment procedures possess this characteristic. Most commonly associated with the term is a specific test developed to provide a relatively quick assessment of a subject's maximal lifting capacity using a modified weight-lifting device.(1,5) The classic psychophysical methodology of assessing maximum acceptable weights of lift is also considered an isoinertial technique under this definition.(6) While the definition provided by Kroemer(1) and Kroemer et al.(4) has been most widely accepted in the literature, some have applied the term "isoinertial" to techniques that differ somewhat from the preceding definition, such as in a description of the Isotechnologies B-200 strength testing device.(7) Rather than lifting a constant mass the B-200 applies a constant force against which the subject performs an exertion. The isoinertial tests described here apply to situations in which the mass to be moved by a musculoskeletal effort is set to a constant. Is Isoinertial Testing Psychophysical or Is Psychophysical Testing Isoinertial? As various types of strength tests have evolved over the past few decades, some unfortunate developments in terminology have arisen to describe and classify different strength assessment procedures. This is particularly evident in sorting out various tests that have been labeled "isoinertial." One example was cited earlier. Another problem that has evolved is that the term "isoinertial strength" has two connotations. The first is the conceptual definition: isoinertial strength tests include any strength test in which a constant mass is handled. In practice, however, the term is often used to denote a specific strength test in which subjects' maximal lifting capacity is determined using a machine and a constant mass is lifted.(1,5) Partially as a result of this dual connotation, the literature contains references to both "isoinertial strength test" as a psychophysical variant(8) and the psychophysical method as an "isoinertial strength test" (4,9) To lay the framework for the next two chapters, the authors will briefly discuss some operational definitions of tests of isoinertial and psychophysical strength. In stating that the isoinertial strength test is a variant of the psychophysical method, Ayoub and Mital(8) refer to the specific strength test developed by Kroemer(1) and McDaniel et al.(5) Clearly, this isoinertial protocol has many similarities to the psychophysical method: both are dynamic; weight is adjusted in both; and both measure the load a subject is willing to endure under specified circumstances. However, while both deal with lifting and adjusting loads, there are significant differences between the psychophysical (isoinertial) technique and the Kroemer-McDaniel (isoinertial) protocol in their procedures and the use of the data collected in these tests. This Bureau of Mines report describes a salt-free, fluxless method for reclaiming metallic aluminum from aluminum dross. The dross is smelted under argon, nitrogen, or carbon dioxide, instead of a salt flux, in an externally heated pot furnace. Aluminum recovery, using argon, is equal to recoveries reported from commercial smelters that process dross in rotary-type furnaces This salt-free method could offer a reduction in air pollution, lower energy requirements by elimination of salts, and the production of up to 60 percent less solid waste for disposal than the salt method.

This paper is one of a series dealing with the mining and crushing methods and costs of the nonmetallic industries, prepared under the sponsorship of and in cooperation with the U. S. Bureau of Mines,. The quarrying methods described in this paper are those used at the Monocacy trap rock quarry which annually produces from 450,000 to 500,000 tons of crushed stone. This property is located 3 miles east of Birdsboro at Monacacy, Pa., and is one of the three quarries operated by the John T. Dyer Quarry Co. Throughout the paper an effort is made to explain the various methods used and the cost of operation.

An important factor in the design and operation of a lignite-gasification plant is knowledge of the thermal requirements. These not only vary with different-size plants but also with the operating conditions for a plant of given capacity. Thermal data have been collected since 1945 from a commercial-scale lignite-gasification pilot plant operated by the Bureau of Mines at Grand Forks, N. Dak. The description and operation of this plant and a study of the gas-composition data have already been described in previous reports (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).2) / This investigation was made to review the thermal data taken in tests and to correlate them in terms of the fraction of undecomposed steam and the H2:CO ratio.

The evaluation of existing rock stresses from measurements of the change in diameter of a borehole that is stress relieved by overcoring has become a common practice, The stress evaluation has been generally based ,on isotropic relations whereas rock in varying degrees is anisotropic. A plane elasticity solution for a circular hole along one axis of an orthotropic medium is adapted for evaluation of in situ stress from borehole deformation measurements. A consistent triaxial testing approach for determining elastic properties of the overcore is also outlined. Comparison of isotropic with anisotropic interpretations of the state of stress show that large errors in evaluation may occur if the anisotropic character of the rock is neglected.

Card-gap and projectile impact sensitivity data are presented for a wide variety of explosive compositions tested at the Bureau of Mines in more or less standard test geometries. The results of both tests are in good agreement in that they provide the same sensitivity ordering for different subclasses of explosives. Least sensitive were homogeneous liquids that did not exhibit a tendency to undergo low-velocity detonation, ammonium nitrate-fuel oil, and most cast military explosives. Of intermediate sensitivity were pressed and powdered military explosives, cast pentolite, permissible and non- permissible water-based explosives, and one commercial two-component explosive. The most sensitive were permissible and nonpermissible dynamites and explosives susceptible to low-velocity detonation.

The recent introduction of small coal jigs in Alabama to meet the needs of truck - mine operators for cheap and economical cleaning equipment marks another step in Alabama's pioneering record in the mechanical cleaning and preparation of coal . During the past 4 or 5 years a number of these small jigs , with capacity of 5 to 10 tons per hour , have been installed at Alabama truck mines and at a few truck mines in Illinois , Tennessee , and Pennsylvania . Most of the installations have been at mines that specialize in the production of domestic , stoker coal . This report describes three models of small jigs and includes performance data obtained recently on one of the models by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior , in cooperation with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa , Ala . , for the purpose of comparing it with fullsize jigs on a performance basis . With literally hundreds of truck mines now in operation throughout the country , it has been assumed in preparing this report that there is widespread interest in the availability of small - scale inexpensive preparation equipment for use at such mines in the production of steam and domestic coal and in some instances coal for manufacture of coke . Practically none of the coal from Alabama truck mines is scld to coke - oven plants ; but in some sections of the country truck mines supply a considerable amount of coking coal, and the use of small, inexpensive washers at some of them might be very advantageous during the present war emergency from the standpoint of increasing pig - iron production through improvements in coke quality .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study of cyanide leach technology used in Alaska's mineral industry from 1987 through 1990. Literature and cost data were obtained for mines in the contiguous United States, Canada, and Alaska that use cyanide to recover gold and silver. The data was compiled in an effort to evaluate the economics and conditions associated with cyanide use in Alaska. This report discusses heap leaching methodology and evaluates a "typical" heap leach operation in Nevada and compares the results of the Nevada operation to an analogous hypothetical mine in Interior Alaska. Five daily tonnage rates were analyzed for both the Nevada and the Alaska operations to evaluate the spectrum of economic possibilities. The discounted cash flow rate of return (DCFROR) for each production rate was then evaluated in terms of recoverable metal value (RMV). The Nevada RMV for each production rate was then compared with its Alaskan counterpart, and the results averaged. The Alaskan production costs are an average of 1.71 times greater than costs associated with mining in Nevada at a 0% DCFROR. At 15% DCFROR, costs in Alaska are 2.01 times greater than those in Nevada. Costs are higher in Alaska because of the shorter leaching season, increased labor and transportation costs, and heavier precipitation and vegetation.
