Kimberlite weathering has been a topic of ongoing research within De Beers for many years. Using kimberlite weathering as an alternative to crushing has many advantages e.g. power and reducing diamond breakage. Weathering could also possibly be used in conjunction with crushing just to weaken the material and reduce power consumption. These forces have driven current research to investigate whether kimberlite weathering could be utilised for these reasons. Weathering in this context does not refer to weathering over long period of time but rather to disintegration of the material in aqeous media in relative short time periods. Previous published work discussed that the presence of smectite renders kimberlite weatherable and that the amount of smectite determines the rate of weathering (Morkel and Vermaak, 2006). The current work investigates whether cation ex-change or the adsorption of organic species in the smectite interlayer could influence the observed weathering behaviour. The results show that cation exchange does take place in the presence of cation species and that the weathering behaviour can be drastically improved with especially Cu2+ cations. Concentration and time effects of the weathering was also investigated. Weathering tests with organic species such as ethanol, methanol, edta, pentanol, butanol, acetic acid and oxalic acid was performed. The results show that organic species does improve weathering but under these testing conditions was not as effective as cations.

The secondary action reagents (SAR) are organic diphilic compounds capable of altering ac-id-base and donor-acceptor properties of the main collector and consequently the energy of collector interaction with the mineral?s surface, its hardness and fixation forms ratio through associates formation via the hydrogen bonds. When the basic flotation conditions are being established, convergence of the electronic structure of the collector and the mineral being extracted due to minerals surface preconditioning with modifiers and the most efficient collector choice. At the next stage of the selective flotation condition establishment SAR is selected for a more precise adjustment of the energy of the collector fixation on the mineral. Such an approach makes it possible to solve efficiently various issues of flotation separation of non-sulfide minerals. In particular neutral organic substances containing groupings C==O, S==O, P==O (ethers of carboxylic and phosphonic acids, amides of carboxylic, phosphonic and sulfonic acids) were proposed as SAR. In order to enhance the flotation process selectivity in the conditions of water recycling including the selectivity of carboxylic collectors especially in the environment of high hardness water flotation, it was proposed to use SAR with long hydrocarbonic radical and groups with enhanced electronic density within the molecule: N-methylolamides of alkylphosphoric acids and ethers of methylphosphonic acid. Introduction of small amounts of these compounds alongside with the main fatty-acid collector enhance the performance of fatty-acid flotation of fluorite, beryl, columbite etc., lowers the collector consumption, and completely compensates the depressive effect of recycled water. Di-2-ethylhexyl ether of methylphosphonic acid?CH3P(O)(OC8H17-i)2 (hexarane) was more thoroughly researched as such an agent within fatty-acid flotation process. Following aspects of the flotation system were studied: interaction of oleic acid and sodium oleate with hexarane in the liquid phase (infrared spectroscopy); heat emission under the interaction of hexarane-oleic acid ? sodium oleate ? calcium salts (isoperiboric diathermic colorimeter); colloid-disperse state of the collector influenced by hexarane (nephelometric analysis); dynamics of the mineral surface hydration due to the agents (method of indicator negative adsorption); hexarane effect upon the interaction of fat-ty-acid collector with calcium salts (complexometric method with Trilon-B); floatability of pure minerals (quartz, microcline, beryl, columbite) in Hallimond tube; hexarane effect upon oleic acid (sodium oleate) adsorption (nephelometric method for identification of the residual content of oleic acid and its forms within the solution). Upon the research it can be definitely concluded that the adjusting effect of such compounds as hexarane within the non-sulfide minerals flotation process is mainly determined by their interaction with the main collector both within the pulp and at the mineral surface with associates formation due to the hydrogen bond. The consequence is calcium oleates destruction with the release of the most active collector under flotation in hard water environment which determines the efficiency of hexarane joint application with fatty-acid collector under recycled water supply. Therefore the introduction of the class of secondary action reagents is supported by their operation mechanisms and flotation process function and determines a new approach to the development of efficient conditions of selective flotation separation of non-sulfide minerals.

Green pellet strength including drop number and green compression is highly depended on particles size and shape. The used grinding method, ball mill or high pressure grinding roll (HPGR), directly vary the particle size and shape. Considering mode of pellet crack, green pellet is composed of particle-binder-moisture system. Different type of forces existed in such a system to create a stable green pellet: solid particle interaction, magnetic, binding and cohesive forces in the interface of particle-moisture. The pellet failure can occur at solid-liquid interface and/or through liquid phase. Pellet crack occurs when crack passed through entirely the plane failure. In this research, the effect of particle size and shape of pellet feed on green pellet strength has been investigated. It was deduced that green pellet strength highly improved by increase of specific surface area. The drop number and green compression strength of pellets prepared by HPGR was higher than ball mill. It was found that the main reason responsible for this difference was the particle shape. Capillary force is responsible for part of pellet force and improves by decrease of particle size. Also more elongated shape of HPGR particles resulted in higher capillary force due to thinner interface layer between particles. The less circular shape of particles lead to improvement of capillary force as can be occurred for HPGR particles. The rougher shape of HPGR particles resulted in higher wettability of particles and better diffusion of water among particles. In fact the rougher particles means lower connection angle. Aspect ratio of particles was of great importance of crack growth because the required energy of pellet failure increases directly. The required energy for pellet failure increases by increment of particle aspect ratio. The relationship among crack failure force, roughness and aspect ratio has been modeled considering 3 shape descriptors.

"The main objective of this study is to find a solution to design a mass flow observer system with the minimum required sensors and maximum observability for a mineral processing plant. The second objective is designing a mass flow observer configuration with high reliability to manage sensor failures. This configuration will provide a robust monitoring system that increases plant availability and process measurement fault detection. Furthermore, the monitoring system is expected to improve process efficiency. In this investigation, the procedure of designing an observer system is presented along with three models to design the sensor network. The advantages and disadvantages of each models are discussed and finally the models result for an industrial case are presented and analyzed. INTRODUCTION The concepts of observability and redundancy of mass flow are directly linked with the ability to solve and estimate the mass flow. There are hundreds of streams in a process plant flowsheet, and for technical and economic reasons it is not possible to measure all mass flows. It is thus important to know for a set of measured streams, which of the unmeasured streams can be estimated. The concept of observability deals with this issue. It is also valuable to know whether a measured mass flow of streams can be estimated even if a sensor fails for some reason. Redundancy deals with this failure question. A stream is said to be observable if it can be estimated by using the measurements and/ or mass conservation equations. Also, a stream is redundant if it is observable even when its measurement is removed. Observability and redundancy analysis can be exploited for adding new measuring instruments. It can also play a useful role in efficient decomposition and data reconciliation problem (Narasimhan and Jordache 1999). The value of an observer system cannot be justified without considering its benefits. This justification is done through evaluation of data reconciliation, gross error detection and improving process performance such as outlined below:"

Cyanidation leaching has always been the most widely used method of extraction of gold in the world. Its low cost and high selectivity has made it the prevalent choice for mining companies, and even for the small scale miners. The use of cyanidation in small scale mining has been an issue for the longest time, mainly due to the operation’s lack of safety measures, health care or environmental protection regulations. In pursuit of more environmentally friendly methods of extraction of gold, several alternative extraction processes have been explored, one of which is chlorination. The chlorination process is advantageous when recovering refractory gold locked in sulfides, as it simultaneously oxidizes the surrounding sulfides as well as dissolve any gold exposed to the lixiviant. This research was conducted to study and develop a safer alternative way of extraction of gold from small scale mining operations, without compromising the recovery of gold. In this study, a variation of the chlorination process has been employed for a refractory flotation concentrate wherein the majority of the gold is locked in sulfides. Hypochlorite-bearing reagents were used as the leaching reagents, and the method developed was a 2-stage leaching process in differing pH conditions. The solution pH and Eh was monitored all throughout the runs, and aliquot samples were taken at time intervals for analysis. SEM-EDS imaging was used to determine the mode of oxidation of the chlorination process, and the image obtained showed that the oxidized layer followed the shape of the particle, suggesting a diffusion controlled process. XRD analysis of the sample before and halfway through leaching further confirmed the oxidation of the sulfides. The amount of gold dissolved in the aqueous solution and in the solid residue were used as the basis for the determination of the recovery of gold. An average gold recovery of up to 84.38% was obtained using the developed method in just 7 hours of leaching. This method was then employed for a pilot-plant scale test and a gold recovery of 79.2% was obtained.

The aim of this work is to compare three different results of charge motion in a modified 5ft diameter lab mill and to identify differences and similarities in these results. The lab mill is modified from tumbling a ball charge to tumbling a charge of disks. This modification replicates 2D motion. This 2D condition is measured using an instrumented disk (iDisk) and analysed using a video imaging system. The iDisk is equipped with a 3D accelerometer array and rotation rate sensors. With the help of a video system, some measured quantities are also determined externally. The results of these three predictions or measurements are presented. A discussion is included.

"This paper presents a new magnetic separator, which can be applied to increase the grade of fine magnetite ore feeding of ball mill. This innovative equipment possesses a rotating magnetic system and has a magnetic field of rapid polarity change which can strengthen the destruction of magnetic agglomerations and the dispersion of minerals to improve the quality of separation. Now this type separators have been successfully applied in several large concentrating plants such as Shuichang Iron Mine under Shouang Mining Company in China. Finally, this paper outlines practical results focused on feed grade and tailing yield, the results are showing that the quality of feeding can be improve tremendously. Hence, a new generator of rotating magnetic field has been paved. INTRODUCTION Jidong region in China is the important origin of iron ore, the characteristics of the iron ore in this region is low grade and complex, the iron mine discharges fine powder tailings reaches tens of millions of tons each year, in the wind action easy to form sand, this poses a threat to the atmosphere environment of Beijing. In order to reduce the mixing of large amount of useless ore and reduce the energy consumption of mill operation, a high efficiency pregrinding equipment is needed. Rotating magnetic field separator (RMS) is an advanced equipment, the main advantage of RMS is the significant reduction in particle entrapment and can easily break magnetic agglomeration. This reduction is so significant that RMS is capable of operating very close to theoritical limit for separator precision and can increace efficiency in selection process.Some expenrimental work on dry rotating magnetic field separation has been carried out in July 1998 in the company Ka Pty Ltd, then in 2008 BGRIMM developed industrial separation XCTG0816 in Shandong province . The wet RMS was researched in1960s in Former Soviet Union and the first industrial equipment was developed by BGRIMM in 1970s,then in 1990s wet RMS was applied in Ansteel group corporation. In 2017,6 units large wet RMS (SXCT1230)which were the largest RMS was applied in Sichuan province. No matter wet RMS and dry RMS, although they are used in differenct applications, they have some common research.in addition ,they all have good use effect."

Due to not to being our own sources, some energy sources such as oil and natural gas which are used frequently, are not reliable energy sources for our country. Coal is an important energy source that Turkey also has a certain reserve as many countries have. To be able to use for many years the reserves of this source that comes from fossils, there is a great need to make more investigation and development activities on it. On behalf of using more productively the current sources, briquetting facility is represented that commenced production in The Aegean Lignite Establishment in 2005 which is in Manisa, Soma. This facility is a part of General Directorate of Turkish Coal. This facility is run by Soma Coal Establishment that works in return for royalty in a licensed field that belongs to TKI. As the demand of market for 0.5 mm dust coal diminishes, we had to accumulate and stock unmerchantable dust coal. Besides, we have intermixed 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal obtained as a result of washing in coal washer with thermic coal with low price as we could not find a client in the market. In this study, the production stages of briquette coal with high quality produced as a result of pressing by mixing 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal with molasse and lime, quality control, and data?s obtained about calories and solidity of products were presented. By briquetting of 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal washed in coal washer, it became possible to sell these coals on a high unit price and by providing the demand of coal of the market, we contributed to productivity of our firm. The results of development of new collecting reagents selectively interacting with the metals of platinum group (MPG) are presented. A new approach to the concentration of the platinum minerals from the fine grade platinum containing products with the use of cloud point polymers for the first time proposed for this purpose is discussed. An original method for the investigation of complexing reagents with the platinum under flotation conditions developed by authors is described. The influence of the complexing reagents on the xanthate adsorption and on the electrochemical properties of the platinum arsenide surface (sperrylite) as well with the interaction mechanism between the reagent and metallic platinum were investigated by means of the modern physical and physicochemical methods of the solid and fluid phase studies. The results of tests of some complexing reagents with the rich copper-nickel ore in the cycle of nickel-pyrrhotite flotation are given. The data obtained makes it possible to mark the complexing reagent containing phosphine group as the most effective additional collector for MPG. Cloud point polymers containing thioamide, aminosulphide, and phosphine functional groups were examined. It is shown that all the reagents tested increase the platinum and palladium extraction to the nickel-pyrrhotite concentrate without quality loss. Platinum containing particles flocculate selectively.

The experiment adopted magnetic separation-priority flotation (first to float copper,then float lead) combined technology to deal with a complex Cu,Pb ,Zn multi-metals ore which has high sulphur content, difficult to separate Cu, Pb ,Zn minerals from sulphur and separate Cu from Pb. Floatable pyrrhotite was separated through magnetic separation which could eliminate the adverse effect on the flotation followed up. And then adopting the priority flotation process to recover the Cu, Pb ,Zn from the magnetic tailings. In priority, flotation Cu, BP(a kind of ethionine ester collector ) and ethyl xanthogenate were used as the collector, LD-1 and sodium sulphite were used as the depressant.The depressants combined with humic acid sodium and lime were used for chalcopyrite ? pyrite separation to further improve the copper concentrate grade. Considering the raw ore that contain 0.32% copper, 0.54% lead and 25.54% sulfur. The copper concentrate grade is 23.61%. The lead content of copper concentrate is only 0.85% . The recovery of copper is 75.03%,and the lead concentrate grade is 54.58%, the copper content of lead concentrate is only 0.81% and the recovery of lead concentrate is 62.24%. The mineral processing indexes were excellent, finally realizing the high effective separation of Cu, Pb , Zn and pyrite. This technique provides a new approach to highly utilize complex copper-lead-zinc ore.

Copper nickel separation is performed by mineral processing techniques both pre and post smelting in Copper Cliff at Vale Canada?s Operations. The separation at Clarabelle Mill takes advantage of the ore mineralogy to affect a separation on the rougher concentrate where chalcopyrite and pentlandite exhibit high liberation and high recoveries thus their separation is simple although incomplete. The copper concentrate comprises only 50% of the copper in ore with the remaining copper being separated post smelting in the Matte Separation plant where the slow cooled Bessemer Matte is again treated by mineral processing operations using flotation to separate the chalcocite and heazlewoodite and magnetic separators to remove a metallic nickel alloy. This paper discusses the mineralogy, separation processes and work currently underway to improve the separation of copper from nickel in these plants.

The Republic of Tajikistan has large mercury-antimony deposit. The Republic takes the second place in the countries of the CIS by having antimony recourses or the fourth place in the world. Recently, on the mine bottom horizons the resources of gold were found. Gold in the data ore is submitted as nanosize particles. Results of ores enrichment of bottom horizons of Djijikrut deposit are obtained by a method of flotation. The flow sheet includes the rougher flotation, two scavenging flotation and two cleaner flotation. As a result of enrichment of ore, the mercury-antimony concentrate with the contents of 51.5% of antimony and recovery 90.3% from ore with the content of mercury of 3.5% was received. The investigation of thallium, selenium, and tellurium distributions on products of enrichment was carried out. The most effective reagents are a mixture of oksafore and butyl xanthogenate. While applying this mixture of reagents it is possible to refuse of the use of activator - nitrate lead. The behavior of gold is in details investigated during enrichment. To collective flotation concentrate is extracted only 30% of gold. The basic quantity of gold concentrates in tailings of flotation and is not taken by existing traditional methods. The alternative innovative technology of gold extraction was created. Various methods of roasting of a collective mercury - antimony concentrate oxidizing and reducing are investigated. Vacuum distillation of concentrate allocation in serial sublimates mercury and antimony was designed. In the received calcine concentrates gold. At additional roasting of a calcine up to 900°? concentration of gold makes 30.6 g/t. The offered innovational technology in a complex allows to process ores and concentrates unique mercury-antimony?gold bearing raw material. The key problems of current flowsheets and equipments are analyzed. A new steel slag's crushing flowsheet whose key equipments are the improved inertia cone crusher and inertia vibrating jaw crusher is proposed. An advanced two stage open-circuit crushing method is adopted in the flowsheet, with 90% of particle size crushing under 6mm. Using inertia vibrating technology and selective crushing principle the crushers can realize steel slag separating fully into steel and slag and with flexible transmission mechanism the crusher can be protected when iron lump is passing. The flowsheets can enhance the recovery of metal greatly, and expand the application range of tail slag and added value.

Graphite, a mineral form of pure carbon, is one of the most versatile minerals in industry, because of its varying physical properties and characteristics. The mineral occurs naturally in the form of tubular crystals or microcrystalline earthy lumps, or it is disseminated in rocks, which have undergone intense metamorphism. India has a large deposition of graphite minerals out of which about 43% are found in Arunachal Pradesh. However, compared to the rest of the country, the North-East Region and particularly Arunachal Pradesh has not attracted attention till date for detail investigation for characterization, beneficiation, prospecting and/or exploitation of the mineral resources including graphite. Bulk graphite sample were collected from upper Subanshiri district of Arunachal Pradesh. Chemical analysis of the representative samples were carried out and found that 7.29%, 19.60% and 6.07% of fixed carbon (FC) is present in graphite sample collected from La-Lamdak, Bopi and Taliha, Arunachal Pradesh, respectively. Chemical analysis of the ash of the graphite sample shows presence of impurities such as silica, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Ca, Mg etc in the graphite sample which are also supported by XRD and SEM-EDX investigation. The graphite samples of Arunachal Pradesh are low grade and do not fulfill the market requirement for the industrial applications. Therefore, low-grade graphite is subjected to beneficiation for the upgradation of the graphite for industrial applications. We have adopted the dispersion?cum-settling technique for the beneficiation of the graphite sample collected from Arunachal Pradesh. The FC of 40.21% with 41.17% raw graphite recovery which is equivalent to 71.02% carbon recovery have been obtained by gravity separation technique using only distilled water without any chemical reagent in case of graphite sample collected from Bopi, Arunachal Pradesh. The graphite sample is upgraded up to 47.75% FC with 41.91% raw graphite recovery, which is equivalent to 85.85% carbon recovery with the pH adjustment at 9 with NaOH. The processing of sulphide ores with variable and complex mineral composition and physical properties, such as those processed by two-stage selective flotation scheme in “Erma reka” concentrator, Minstroy Holding JSC, requires excellent selectivity in order to achieve acceptable concentrate grades. The lead-zinc ores from the hydrothermal lead-zinc deposits mainly contain galena (PbS), sphalerite (ZnS), pyrite (FeS) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), as well as non-metal minerals such as quartz, carbonates and clinopyroxenes skarns. One of the main impurities present in sphalerite is iron, which is known to be detrimental to the rate of sphalerite flotation and its recovery. The results from the conducted laboratory and industrial tests, presented in the previous study, showed that it is possible to depress the iron rich sphalerite by adding MINFIT® (modified sulfur-oxy depressant) at the pH of approximately 9.5 in rougher lead flotation circuit, leading to reduction of zinc sulphate consumption and complete elimination of cyanides from the flotation process. Furthermore, the consumption of copper sulphate, which reactivates the surface of the zinc minerals, was significantly reduced. Consequently, the optimisation of the reagent regime in the Erma reka concentrator, led to notably improved qualitative (grade, recovery) properties of the final lead and zinc concentrates. Moreover, when comparing the reagents consumption for 2014 and 2016 – when the processing plant have been applying the new optimized reagents regime, comprises the use of MINFIT as the primary depressant, the following results have been achieved: ZnSO4 decreased by 30%; CuSO4 consumption decreased four times and full rejection of cyanides from the process. Finally, this paper provides a state-of-the-art review of the obtained results during the period of application of the new flotation reagents regime in the Erma reka concentrator, Minstroy Holding JSC.

This paper presents the research on comprehensive recovery of copper, gold, silver and iron from tailings from high-intensity magnetic separation in Tonglushan Mine. By comparison of experimental results of three flowsheets?regrinding of tailings-conventional sulphidizing flotation, water heating enhanced sulphidizing flotation and acid leaching-sulphidizing precipitation flotation, it is concluded that regrinding of tailings-conventional sulphidizing flotation flowsheet has the best economical and technical performance and practicability. Regrinding and using the mixture of sodium hydroxamate and sodium xanthate are two of the notable technical characteristics of this best flowsheet. The system for comprehensive recovery of tailings has been put into production. It not only can recover the valuable minerals from tailings in Tonglushan Mine, but also can reduce the environmental pollution, resulting great economic and social benefit.

The results study the minerals oxidation were obtained by us during the methods of microscopic, FT-IR spectroscopic, XRD and chemical analyses of sulphides in tailings of copper-nickel wastes in Kola peninsula. Sulphide minerals begin to oxidize already at the stage of stockpiling and initial stages of storing. The proportion of non-ferrous metals and magnesium oxide increases with time, calcium partially precipitating in the form of gypsum. Comparison of heavy metal contents in pore solutions in cur-rent and stale copper-nickel ore concentration tailings has revealed a significant difference in practically all the parameters. The lower metal contents in current tailing pore solutions (by 5~30 times) are probably due to the presence of float reagent residues blocking oxidation. Much lower concentrations of magnesium and calcium can be accounted for by the difference in kinetics: the rate of sulphide oxidation at this stage is much higher than that of solution interaction with non-metallic minerals as the result of which the solid phase ? solution equilibrium is not achieved. It is generally believed worldwide that it the mining wastes with acidic pore solutions that pose the greatest hazard for the environment. Our findings suggest that although the solution pH in all the samples is higher than 7.8, the contain heavy metal concentrations by far exceeding permissible values. The direct determination of the total and silicate Ni contents in the tailings from current production and in storage tailings has shown that both sulphide and silicate Ni forms occur in tailings. However, the role of silicate Ni is much larger in the storage tailings. The average silicate Ni content accounts for 10% of the bulk Ni content in the current tailings and it increases to 40% in the storage tailings. Thus, the storage tailings are marked not only by sulphide oxidation and the removal of water-soluble sulfates, but also by the interaction of sulfates with the silicate matrix. Although complete equilibrium is not achieved even within 30 yr under polar-region conditions, the major part of the Ni in fine-grained fractions passes into silicate form. The probability of Ni transition to the silicate form directly correlates with the dispersion of the material and the amount of chemically reactive serpentine and hydrochlorite. The migration of Ni as sulfates and its precipitation by chemically active silicates distorts the distribution of this component in the coarse- and fine-grained fractions that are typical of tailings from the current production of copper-nickel ores. On the one hand, the variation of the mode of Ni occurrence in storage tailings lowers the value of technogenic raw materials as a source of this metal.

There are many measuring methods of grain sizes. Taking into consideration the fine grained materials, one of the existing techniques is measurement of grain size by the Coulter Counter method. This method is based on the measuring the changes of electrolyte resistance during grains flow through the calibrated diaphragm. This method is relatively simple to apply, significantly precise and the results are given quickly. However, the problem is that the measurements are limited by the size of diaphragm. Because of this situation, measurement of grain sizes by this instrument is possible in range from 10% to 60% of diaphragm diameter. This limitation causes the necessity of re-placing diaphragm in case when the measured grain size distribution concerns the material of large size range. In purpose of determining the total grain size distribution, the synthesis of some partial distributions, given for individual grain fractions (with different diaphragm applied), is required. This is possible to do by calculating the mixture of distribution functions, created from the partial distribution functions. Two materials were selected to research: quartzite and glass, which were comminuted in cylindrical crusher, additionally grinded, screened and then analyzed by Coulter Counter for five grain fractions: 0~125 µm, 0~80 µm, 0~56 µm, 0~40 µm and 0~25 µm. For each fraction, five different partial distributions were given (in case of glass ? four), which are the basis for the creating the joined grain composition. To assure the adequacy of the given distribution function, it is necessary to obtain the possibly best approximation of partial distributions. In the work, both the parametric and non-parametric methods of density approximations of investigated random variable. For each grain fraction the approximations were done by three traditional distribution functions: RRB, GSA and log-norm distribution functions and three methods of non-parametric approximation: Gauss kernel, Epanechnikov kernel and orthogonal Fourier series method. The extraction of nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co) from the laterite deposit of Ramu nickel-cobalt Project in Papua New Guinea was performed in this study. Chemical analysis by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP-AES) atomic emission spectrometer, SPS-3000 (Seiko Instruments (Inc.), shows the ore contains 48% Fe, 1% Ni, 0.1% Co, 1.8% Al, 0.14% Mg, and 0.8% Mn. Characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the laterite ore obtained from the mine site shows the ore contains 70 to 80% goethite (FeOOH), assuming Fe content of 48% is mainly from geothite. The main leaching parameters investigated include; slurry temperature, leaching time and sulphuric acid (H2SO4) concentration to evaluate nickel and cobalt extraction. For all experiments, 10g batch samples are put into 300 ml beaker containing 100 ml of sulphuric acid of varying concentrations (1M, 2M, 4M). During the leaching period, 5 ml slurry samples are withdrawn at different times and filtered to obtain filtrate for ICP analysis to monitor nickel and cobalt extraction. Solid samples at the end of all tests are also obtained by filtration and after drying, XRD and ICP tests are performed to monitor nickel and cobalt contents. According to the test results performed at normal atmospheric pressure, over 99% of nickel and over 50% cobalt were extracted into solution within 120 min at 95ºC in 2M H2SO4 solution. Similar results were obtained when only temperature was reduced to 90ºC, but cobalt extraction increased to over 70% when leaching time was increased to 240 min. Further reduction in temperature to 80 and 60ºC resulted in reduction of nickel and cobalt extraction. At the end of each leaching test, magnetite was seen to attach to magnetic stirrer. This paper presents gold occurrence investigations on the altered rock gold deposit from Jiaodong area of China, and comparisons of gold occurrence in the ore samples from different mining levels. According to the results, the chemical and mineral compositions of raw materials from different mining levels are quite similar. However, the relative content and grain size of gold minerals are quite different between the two mining levels of -130m~-340m and -550m~-650m. In the ore of upper mining levels of -130m~-340m, electrum is the dominant gold mineral and accounts for about 80% of the total gold minerals, while native gold is minor and accounts for about 20%. As for the ore of deep mining levels of -550m~-650m, the major gold mineral shifts to native gold which accounts for 67%, while the ratio of electrum drops to about 33%. Coarser gold grain size was observed in the upper mining level ore with a mean size of 33.05µm while the gold grain size was much finer in the ore of deep mining levels with a mean size of 22.85µm. Furthermore, the gold mineral associations also show different patterns between the upper mining level samples and the deep mining level samples. Of the three observed gold association types such as inclusion gold, fissure gold and interparticle gold, more inclusion gold was found in the ore of deep mining levels. The inclusion gold accounts for 62% in the ore of deep mining levels, while that in the ore of upper mining levels accounts for about 56%. Further study revealed that the dominant gold associated minerals are pyrite and sulphides and only a small amount of gold is associated with quartz and silicates. It was shown that the altered rock gold ore from Jiaodong area can be regarded as a free milling gold ore, but the processing parameters should be optimized for the ores in different mining levels according to the different gold occurrence. In addition, it was predicted that enhanced gold liberation is necessary for the ore in deep mining levels.
