"Spiral concentrators offer a cost effective way to separate valuable minerals from gangue by displacing lighter materials to the outside, and heavier materials to the inside of the spiral. The separation can be seen as visible concentrate bands and splitters are set at the bottom of the spiral to effectively split the ore into various densities. As there are typically many spirals in a concentrator plant, it becomes ineffective to continually adjust the splitter positions manually. Vermaak et al. (2008) proposed to use image recognition to detect the concentrate bands, thereafter, creating a model predicting the positions under certain input conditions. This model could then be used for optimisation and/or control of splitter position or band position. In contrast an online concentrate band detection system would provide real time concentrate band positions without losing accuracy due to model generalisation. These systems are usually expensive and time consuming to develop, due to a lot of centralised features required (image capturing, image processing and/or feedback to a controller). This study took advantage of the recently developed Raspberry Pi minicomputer to perform rapid prototyping of an online image processing sensor. The Raspberry Pi, and accompanying camera module, offers a portable Linux environment which can natively run the required image processing algorithms. Furthermore, extensive use of OpenCV was made to reduce development time, by relying on existing and proven algorithms to detect the concentrate bands. The Raspberry Pi also incorporates generic input/output ports which can be used in future work to provide the signal to a controller. In conclusion, the Raspberry Pi was successfully used to perform real time concentrate band position detection on a spiral concentrator. This solution is more general than an experimentally identified input-output model and may be used for control or optimisation studies in a wide array of spiral concentrators."

The copper extraction yield from thermophilic bioleaching of chalcopyrite depends on temperature, pH, and the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), as well as the activity of the microbe used. We studied copper extraction yields obtained from chalcopyrite with three thermophiles, Acidianus brierleyi, Sulfolobus metallicus, and Metallosphaera sedula, under various pH and temperature conditions and with different initial amounts of ferric iron. The results indicated that the capacity of each thermophile strain to leach iron as Fe3+ differed, which affected the influence of pH, temperature, ORP, and microbial activity level on the yield of copper. Microbial activity can cause ORP to be close to the critical value (450 mV) at which copper extraction at 65 °C can be higher than that at 80°C. An initial pH of 1.5 retards the precipitation of jarosite, allowing temperatures as high as 80°C to result in copper extraction yields close to 100%. However, if a thermophile with a poor capacity to form Fe3+ is employed, 100% copper extractions can also be obtained at pH 2.5, because ORP is low as result of low amounts of Fe3+ in solution. Optimum temperatures for the growth of thermophiles did not always mean high copper extraction yields. Conversely, high biomass concentrations depending on the capacity of the thermophile strain to leach iron as Fe3+, can result in excess Fe3+ in solution, leading to the precipitation of large amounts of Fe3+ as jarosite. The bioleaching capacity of A. brierleyi was reduced or suppressed when insufficient initial Fe3+ was pro-vided to trigger the leaching reaction, whereas S. metallicus and M. sedula were less sensitive to the initial availability of Fe3+. This result confirmed that a direct enzymatic attack on the mineral surface could initiate the leaching reaction, but later ORP governed the leaching rate of chalcopyrite.

"Energy is the major concern for society. It is expected that developing country economies and populations will grow and consume more energy. Interest in nuclear power is rising, while the world looks for non-depletable energy source that will not contribute to global warming. However, it still has concerns of nuclear proliferation, radioactive waste and safety. It is necessary to overcome these concerns if nuclear energy is expanded to developing countries. Thorium (Th) utilization as nuclear fuel will be an opening key of these difficulties because Th produces less Plutonium (Pu) and less radioactive waste with enhanced safety. Research into the use of Th as a nuclear fuel has been taking place over forty years, through with much less intensity than that for uranium (U) or U-Pu fuels. Nuclear industry is currently using only 0.7% of the available energy from mined U. With huge resources of Th and relatively little U, Turkey has made utilization of Th for large-scale energy production a major goal in its nuclear power programme. Thorium fuel is plentiful and inexpensive. Energy is major concern for developing Turkish society. Turkey, today exports more than 70% of its energy as fossil fuels. In the last 50 years, Turks are skeptical, anxious and indecisive about having nuclear energy for electricity production. In the last 10 years, Thorium is brought into Turkish government’s attention and national discussion as a new, safe, clean, affordable, CO2-free, alternative, strategic and domestic nuclear energy fuel. Turkey recently contacted four VVER-1200 type Russian Nuclear Power Reactors using U as a fuel in Akkuyu (Rosatom) and another four units will be established in Sinop in the next decade by Japan (Mitsubishi-Westinghouse). Turkish nuclear programme must envisage use of domestic Th as a fertile material. This paper briefly reviews the developments of Th-fuel cycle for nuclear energy from global and Turkish perspectives. Previous Th reserve development and recovery studies from Turkish bastnasite ore are summarized in this paper."

"The use of ultrasonic in industrial processes has increased during the last few years. Ultrasonic vibrations are used in sieving, grinding, ore washing, cleaning, and flotation in mineral industry. There are also some attempts for the utilization of ultrasonic treatment in separation and removal of fine particles from gases and liquids. In Kalemaden A.S. (Turkey) four different types of clay mixtures (1. A mixture of clays from Balikesir-Düvertepe and Istanbul-Sile, 2. A mixture of clays from Ukrania and Balikesir-Düvertepe, 3. Sögüt-Kadikelimesi, 4. A mixture of clays from Sögüt and Istanbul-Sile) and kaolin from Balikesir-Düvertepe (Turkey) are concentrated before their use in ceramic production. Dewatering is the important step in those types of concentration plants. Sedimentation of concentrated clay has always been difficult and taken long times due to their nature and having small particle sizes. Flocculants can be used to enhance the sedimentation, but they are not preferred by the ceramic industry since they affect the quality of ceramic products. For this purpose, ultrasonic treatment is used in the sedimentation of clays mentioned above for solving the problems encountered related to the ceramic industry and promising results were obtained.Kaolin sample, subjected to this experimental study, from Balikesir-Düvertepe region of Turkey was brought from the plant as a pulp in containers and throughly mixed with a stirrer before sedimentation experiments. A two liter graduated cylinder and an ultrasonic bath (with 25 kHz frequency and 0.5 KW power) were utilized in the tests. Superfloc A-120 (1% concentration) was used as a flocculant. The settling distance was reported against the settling time during the experiments. Initial and final pulp densities were also determined. The effects of several parameters such as pulp density, flocculant addition, and ultrasonic treatment on the sedimentation of kaolin were investigated and the results are represented in terms of settling distance versus settling time."

"Various methods are used to identify the grain composition of fine-grained materials because so far the best notion of the grain size has not found and there is no single method to define grain size. In practice the most important are the following grain sizes: sieve diameter dt, effective diameter de, substitute diameter d2 and statistical diameter dst. The mentioned sizes are connected with the methods of analyses. Methods are correct but measure of different diameters of grain and their results are different.The most important methods of granulometric composition analyses are the following: the sieve analysis, the sedimentation method and the conductometric (Coulter-Counter) methods. In each of these methods various physical features connected with the grain size are measured.Sizes of grains defined by different formulas or measurement methods are associated mutually by dependencies, which are results of differences in their determination or calculation ways.In order to determine principles of results comparison the classification analysis results on linearly or non-linearly connected was made. Analyses which results demonstrate the same type of grain size distribution are treated as linearly connected. It is based on the general formulae which determines the probability density function of random variable which is the function of another random variable having the known density function.In order to show the difference in the grain composition of the same material qualified by different methods, three methods of investigations were distinguished. They are: the sieve analysis performed on precise sieves, the sedimentation analysis performed by means of a sedimentation balance “Sartorius” and the microscopic analysis performed after preparing a microscopic slide where the grain size was measured by the Martin’s method.The materials selected for the analysis were quartzite and glass, which are the material of high purity.The obtained results of mentioned above three types of analyses were approximated by distribution function of four distributions: Weibull, log-normal, cut Weibull and Gaudin-Schuhman."

The Miraí plant from Votorantim Metais, has two screening stages to the bauxite classification after scrubbagem. The final product has hold the larger size of 0,84 millimeters (20 mesh). There are two sieves Haver & Boecker (model R-TE 3658 x 10972), which have four modules with cut size sieves of 10 mesh (1.70 millimeters) and ¼ inch (6.35 millimeters) on the primary screen, and 20 mesh (0.84 mm) on the secondary screen, all made of polyurethane. The actual configuration was established according to the empirical tests realized that aimed the increase material load on the secondary screening. However, having in mind the screening process improvement and use the fractions smaller than 0,84 mm, which have significant levels of Alumina and low reactive silica, was proposed a new test of change the sieves opening for 6 mesh in the primary screen and 28 mesh for the secondary sieve. The objective of this work was measure the ore alterations on the particle size distribution on the screening steps, increasing the plant weight and ratio recovery before and after the test.

"Flotation of metal-organic precipitate in column is sensible to the hydrodynamic conditions determined by the diameter and dispersion of rising bubbles. Thus, the dissipation energy in the system resulting of ratio between superficial fluid velocities (gas and feed) in the column is main parameter for precipitate flotation in pilot or industrial scales. The knowledge of aggregate structure can lead to better understanding and control of many solid-liquid separation processes (sedimentation, filtration, thickening and flotation). Many authors highlight the importance of structural properties (i.e. floc density) for different industrial applications.This approach was applied to achieve the flotation of molybdenum precipitate obtained with organic collector a- benzoin oxime for molar ratio 1:2. Flotation tests were carried out at lab and pilot scale with rigorous control of the size distribution of bubbles and the values of dissipation energy in the systems.Structural evolution of Mo precipitate and the destruction phenomenon were described by using of the various fractal dimensions, which were deduced from experimental data of laser sizer devices and optic microscopy pictures of precipitate. The boundary fractal dimensions Df of large aggregates allows the detection of a structural scaled organisation of the precipitate flocs (elementary germs-microflocs-flocs). The fractal dimension of the particle mass distribution Dm=1.94+/-0.15 suggests, for the floc structure, a cluster-cluster aggregation process either with structuration or breakage phases.The destruction process characterised by a fractal dimension Dg controls the final size distribution. The floc destruction occurs for the lowest values of the dissipation energy (0.02 – 0.05 W/kg). The relation between Dg and the system dissipation energy Et (for various energy E dissipated in the agitation cell) involves the different breakage mechanisms of aggregates in function of the aggregation bonds (Fig. 1).Besides, the destruction of floc produces very fine particles (elementary germs or/and microfloc according to E), and thus induces the difficulties of bubble-particle attachment during the precipitate flotation in column. Yet, very small bubbles, which increase the collision probability, would make the flotation feed rate decrease. The optima ratio between superficial gas and feed velocities are determined for bubble size and flotation results control at pilot scale. Thus, it is possible to providing the catastrophically changes of precipitate column flotation by using the following established experimental relation: the mean diameter d of the flocs under the action of dissipated energy Et follows a power like law (d~Et -0.5). This allows estimating the size distribution of flocs for the E values which can appear in column."

The concept of sustainable development resting on three pillars of economics, environment and social development has become an increasingly important factor in the European mining sector and a major influence on the related policies of the European Commission. Members of European mining industry shall conduct their activities according to the principles which promote sustainable development. A successful minerals planning policy should create the legal administrative environment that is necessary to ensure the sustainable supply of minerals to society within the framework of sustainable development. Members of the European mining industry shall conduct their activities according to principles which promote sustainable development. The challenge for sustainability is to find a balance between securing minerals supply, protecting the environment and achieving social progress. The point of balance depends on the range of policies adopted by governments. In this paper the development of the sustainability of the mining sector in EU and the social component of sustainability in the mineral industry is discussed.

To comprehensively utilize the valuable resource in tailings, increase the economic benefit of mine, reduce the amount of tailings, prolong the service life of tailing dam, the comprehensive utilization of tailing resource is arousing the attention of more and more mines. Research of comprehensive recovery of feldspar and silica from Cu-Mo floatation tailings has been furthered. Technology of "De-sliming-Magnetic Separation-Reverse Flotation-Feldspar and Silica Separation" has been developed to utilize the resource. Slime is removed and reagents cost is reduced by de-sliming. The specific effective collector ZL is used in gangues reverse flotation, and GZ-818 is the collector in feldspar and silica separation. The grinding operation is vital to ensure the liberation degree of feldspar and to eliminate the reagents pollution on minerals surface. To a Cu-Mo flotation tailing assaying K2O 5.22%, Na2O 2.22%, Fe2O3 1.95%, Al2O3 12.05%, SiO270.66%, superfine K-feldspar and silica concentrates can be produced. The feldspar concentrate productivity is 29.67% assaying K2O 8.99%, Na2O 2.86%, Fe2O3 0.16%, Al2O3 16.99% and SiO2 68.92%. The silica concentrate productivity is 14.20% assaying 0.17% K2O, 0.04% Na2O, 0.01% Fe2O3, 0.55% Al2O3 and 98.17% SiO2. The technology provides technological reference model for the similar mines.

"This paper shows that smooth and accurate feed-hopper level control is essential for consistent cone crusher operation. The objective of the paper is to define the best practices for tight control of cone crusher feed-hopper level. The paper discusses the challenges involved in a delay-dominant level control problem (specifically, dead-time-induced performance and stability issues, mass flow disturbances, process and actuator non-linearity) and proposes five corresponding control structures. The performance of the proposed control structure candidates is evaluated in a simulation study and, finally, a full-scale experiment is conducted for the best-performing candidate. The results of this study emphasize the importance of control structure selection. While the most obvious control structures failed to deliver the desired performance, the best result was achieved by using control structures that eliminate the conveyor transport delay (dead-time) from the control loop. In practice, the control loop dead-time can be eliminated by either using an actuator (variable-speed feed conveyor) that is connected directly to the feed-hopper, or by redefining the process boundaries closer to the used actuator (regulate the circuit mass balance instead of feed-hopper level). The presented control structures provide means to achieve a consistent cone crusher performance and size reduction. This facilitates efforts to improve the plant’s performance and increases the plant’s overall stability."

Tourmaline has the characteristics of piezoelectricity, thermoelectricity, spontaneous polarization and far-off infrared radiations. Ultra-fine powders of tourmaline have extensive applications in the fields of electron, chemical and environment protection, as well as health protection. The preparation technology of ultra-fine tourmaline powder is discussed. The key equipment of a pilot plant for producing ultra-fine tourmaline powder with jet mill and stirred ball mill is described. Using this pilot plant facility it is possible to produce tourmaline powder with particle size smaller than 100 nm, and a continuous production process can be realized. The final powder product has many superior performance such as high whiteness and large specific surface area, and it?s a negative ions emission can reach the value of 7190 ions per cubic centimeter.

As one of the key inorganic chemical industries, the chromate chemical industry has spawned extensively public concerns due to the resulted environmental pollution. The cleaner production technology for chromium compounds bases on sub-molten salt medium developed by the Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences has greatly decreased the reaction temperature and energy consumption, significantly in-creased the utilization ratio of the chromium element, and successfully achieved the comprehensive utilization of chromite resources and zero emission of chromium-containing residue. The separation process of production is the most important components in the cleaner technology. In this work, we studied two parts: the first is the removal of SiO2, Al3+ from the system and the recycling utilization of alkali metal medium through adding Ca(OH)2 and CaO; the second is to get more pure K2CrO4 crystalloid and remove K2CO3 from KOH solution through evaporation to prepare raw material for manufacturing Cr2O3 and get 50%(wt) KOH. The results obtained show that Ca(OH)2 can remove Al3+ more than CaO and has lower caustic ratio than CaO when they were added 110% of theoretic quantity. The optimal pure K2CrO4(96%) can be gained at 45 Celsius degree in 30% KOH solution and K2CO3 in 50% KOH solution could be decreased to 3.5%(wt) at 40 Celsius degree. And then K2CO3 can be causticized with adding Ca(OH)2 to recycle potassium alkali. The impure material can be re-moved and suitable raw material for manufacturing Cr2O3 can be gotten and reaction medium can be also recycled in this process technology, realizing cleaner production effectively.

New modern water treatment technologies required for arsenic removal from waste waters contaminated extensively by various background sources from mining, industrial waste, agricultural waste, painting industry and natural geological bed rock system etc. Arsenic is a widely dispersed element in the earth's crust and exists at an average concentration of approximately 5 mg/kg. Arsenic (As) and heavy metals may be released from the mine wastes to the ground and surface water systems, as well as the geological environment due to their solubility and mobility. This research focuses on the effect of accelerated carbonation process for successful removal of heavy metal arsenic anions from artificial waste water and mining waste waters. This accelerated carbonation process is a simple and novel method with 85 ~ 88% removal efficiency. Carbonation has been studied as a process to further improve immobilization of solidified/stabilized waste and granular waste. After successful removal of arsenic anions from solid mining waste and its potential benefits for producing construction materials. Besides, the industrial and urban management systems are generating bulk solid mining wastes, and most often dumping them in open fields. To prevent the landfilling with mining waste, many efforts are being made for the recycling of different types of mining solid wastes with a view to utilizing them in the production of various construction materials.

"The leaching of base and precious metal ores and concentrates continues to progress in both laboratory study and industrial application. These developments are being driven by the need to respond to difficult ores and concentrates that are not amenable to conventional treatment. In many cases alternatives are being developed to conventional treatment (e.g. Pyrometallurgy) for technical and economic reasons.In this paper, a brief general review of some new developments in leaching will be followed by a more detailed explanation of three process developments that have either been industrially applied or are expected to be applied in a short time frame. The three processes to be reviewed in detail are the Mt. Gordon Copper Process, the Anglo American Corporation/University of British Columbia Copper Process and the PLATSOL Process. These leaching processes operate at low (90°C), medium (150°C) and high (220°C) temperature and are successful in quickly and completely extracting metal values from ores and concentrates.INTRODUCTIONThe process of leaching is widely used in hydrometallurgy to selectively recover a metal of interest from an ore or a concentrate. Leaching and by extension hydrometallurgy is well established in the recovery of copper (copper heap leach ? SX-EW), nickel (Moa Bay and Caron process), zinc (roast ? leach ? electrowin and zinc pressure leach), gold (cyanidation) and uranium (acid sulfate leach). Of course this success extends to many of the metals found in nature. Recently, the importance of hydrometallurgy appears to be increasing with hydrometallurgy viewed as an attractive alternative to both traditional mineral processing and conventional smelting/converting/refining. This increasing interest has led to intensive study and increasing application. Selected developments include:Copper ? the Mt. Gordon process and new concentrate processes such as INTEC, Activox, CESL, Dynatec, Total Pressure Oxidation, MIM Albion, BioCop, and the AAC/UBC Process.Nickel ? Voisey Bay process for hydrometallurgical treatment of Voisey Bay concentrate, HPAL processing of laterites at Murrin Murrin, Bulong and Cawse, atmospheric leaching of laterites, heap bioleaching of nickel sulfides by Titan Resources (Australia).Zinc ? establishment of zinc leach, solvent extraction and electrowinning technology for treatment of the Skorpion deposit in Namibia, new developments in atmospheric and pressure leaching, the Hydrozinc process.Gold ? development of a number of thiosulfate leaching processes for recovery of gold from refractory carbonaceous ores or concentrates."

"It has been suggested that hydroxo species, particularly those of calcium, selectively adsorb onto gangue minerals. Such species enhance the depressive action of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) onto gangue via an acid-base interaction between the positively charged mineral surface and the negatively charged CMC molecule. Thus, the hydrophilicity of gangue minerals is enhanced, preventing the dilution of the concentrate. However, as there is little evidence to support these claims it is important to investigate. Adsorption data and mineral surface charge analyses will allow a fundamental understanding into how electrolytes and their ionic strengths affect gangue-depressant adsorption. It is strongly anticipated that decoupling these effects will allow process operators to tailor their process water quality needs towards best flotation operating regimes and in the long run effect closed water circuits. Thus, using talc and pyrrhotite as proxies, this work investigates the influence of the ionic strength of process water on the adsorption of CMC onto minerals in sulphide flotation.INTRODUCTIONThe phenomenon of gangue depression in mineral flotation is of critical importance as regards the attainment of a required concentrate grade. This thus suggests that the depressant of choice has to have a highly selective affinity for the targeted gangue minerals. This would ensure the necessary prevention of gangue from reporting to the concentrate without inadvertently depressing the value bearing mineral. The chemistry of the environment regulates the manner in which gangue depression occurs. In sulphide flotation, polysaccharides are used as depressants of choice to depress naturally floatable gangue which may in the case of Merensky ores exist as talc. The two widely used polysaccharides in the South African context are carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and modified guar gum. It is suggested that polysaccharides depress gangue by rendering the surface of gangue hydrophilic or by preventing the formation of hydrophobic layers on gangue mineral surface, forming large gangue aggregates and thereby increasing their heterocoagulative nature (Shortridge et al., 1999)."

"Nickel-metal hydride batteries (Ni-MH) are storers of electrochemical energy, which have a higher specific storage capacity than lead or nickel-cadmium batteries. The demand for Nickel-metal hydride batteries is increasing rapidly since their market launch in the early 1990’s. Today there is no suitable and sustainable recycling process to recover nickel, cobalt and rare-earth metals. The discarded batteries are used today in the steel industry as alloy material because they contain nickel. Cobalt and rare-earth metals (RE) are lost; they are non-recycleable.In a German governmental funded research project, IME Aachen, ACCUREC Mühlheim and UVR-FIA Freiberg are cooperating in processing as well as in creating a feasibility study. The target of this project is the development of a new recycling process for metal recovery from Ni-MH-batteries. The proposed process described in this paper consists of a combination of mechanical, pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing steps. This process is capable of treating all types of Ni-MH-batteries. After comminution steel and organics are separated. The separated Ni-MH is smelted in an electric arc furnace. The products are a nickel-cobalt alloy and a slag phase enriched with rare-earth oxides for further treatment to ‘mischmetal’. Both the Nickel-Cobalt alloy and the ‘mischmetal’ will be directly used in battery production."

Centrifugal separation opens its new application fields in the Mining Industry. The up-to-date equipment for ultra-fine ore and concentrates grinding allows an efficient use of centrifugal concentration for micronic gold grains recovery. Moreover, advanced centrifugal concentrators are presented on the market: concentrators with continuous concentrate discharge designed both for ore and non-metallic minerals concentration process. The conducted tests proved the centrifugal concentration to be efficient process for gold recovery from finely ground concentrates and ores (less than 20 µm). Knelson concentrator application for such a fine material in different process circuits makes possible to raise the total gold recovery level of plants. In the circuits of coal plants and in course of coal slimes treatment the centrifugal concentration may be used before flotation in order to improve process performances. The main deposits of gold-sulfide ores of Russia are characterized as refractory raw material with the non-uniform finely-interspersed sulfide mineralization, submicron gold, the low gold content (3-5 ppm) and non-uniform distribution of the gold associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite. These ores show low indicators of extraction of gold and silver at cyanidation. Flotation is one of the basic technological procedures of processing of gold sulfide ores however simultaneous presence of pyrite and arsenopyrite and lack of effective methods of their selection constrains application possibility of flotation schemes because of rigid requirements to flotation concentrates under the arsenic content and practically excludes smelting of pyrite concentrate. The main losses of precious metals at flotation technologically are concentrated in thin classes (up to 15 %) demonstrating an inefficiency of standard reagent modes. For an estimation of expediency and possibility of application of selective flotation of pyrite and arsenopyrite a scientific substantiation of the mechanism and criteria of selection of gold-bearing ferrous sulfides of various material structure is developed and for difficultly divided pairs of sulfides with close technological properties the new selective reagents providing effective extraction of gold from hard-to-beneficiate ores are designed. The original technique for modifying surface composition of natural sulfides by nano-sized Au is worked out and the mechanism of selective adsorption of new reagents ? oxypropyl ester of diethyl-dithiocarbamatic acid (OPDTC) and oak bark extract (OBE) on Au-bearing sulfide minerals is revealed. Formation of almost insoluble OPDTC-Au compounds is defined by methods of scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and UV-spectroscopy. Application of developed reagent modes using new reagents have been tested in laboratory conditions at flotation gold-sulfide ores samples and collective concentrate probes providing high extraction of gold and improved quality of the concentrate (less than 2 % As). The challenges of nature for the recovery of metals for a sustainable future continue to present in diverse ways. Base metal deposits are becoming lower grade and more complex. Rare earth metal demand is soaring and must certainly be met from new sources outside of China. Precious metals have soared in value due to increased industrial usage and the importance of these metals as financial instruments. Many of the future sources of precious metals are complex and difficult to process. The field of hydrometallurgy plays an important role in providing technology for extraction of these metals for a sustainable future. Selected examples from the base, rare and precious metals fields will be used to illustrate how current developments are providing metals for our future. The recovery of rare earths by beneficiation, leaching, purification, precipitation will be described from a multi-mineral deposit in Canada. The recovery of metals from complex base and precious metal ores may be accomplished using chloride ? assisted high temperature pressure leaching. Finally, by way of example, the enhanced Galvanox? process for treatment of chalcopyrite concentrates using silver-activated pyrite as a catalyst will be illustrated. This process offers a viable alternative to the conventional smelting of chalcopyrite copper concentrates.

Empirical models used for predicting the performance of screens on the basis of capacity, cut size, water split and grade efficiency curves were evaluated. This paper reports experimental results obtained with single-deck Derrick screens. The performance of the screen was tested with limestone in a separate screen set-up, in a pilot plant and in industrial scale test runs. The results of pilot plant experiments showed that the measured water split was higher than the measured bypass. This is an indication to that water flow does not entrain the same proportion of all fine particles present in the feed which is advantageous for screening. The experimental design for the industrial test runs was made on the basis of the pilot plant tests. Suitability of the existing models has been checked and accuracy compared. The tests showed that best grade efficiency model was the Rosin-Rammler model. An empirical model for the evaluation of the model parameters as a function of pulp density of the feed and the load of the screen is suggested.
