For more than a decade, Hatch has used process and logistics models to assist Rio Tinto Fer et Titane (RTFT) with capacity planning, debottlenecking, and optimization to help ensure design capability, capital effectiveness, and operational efficiency of the integrated production chain. Process models are used to optimize the physics-based aspects of the system, such as mass and energy balances, flow rates, yields, and equipment specifications. Dynamic logistics models are used to optimize how the various plant areas work together to achieve the desired ends and deal with such things as plant scheduling and synchronization strategies, sizing of buffers between processes, defining the required number of process and material handling units, and designing a plant layout that minimizes plant interferences and inefficiencies. The combined use of process models and logistics models enables the overall plant to be optimized from both a productivity and quality point of view, with each plant area working in harmony with one another to achieve targeted capacities and efficiencies. This paper describes the many benefits derived from such modeling efforts over the past 15 years for each of the major plant areas at RTFT: Beneficiation Plant, Smelter Plant, Steel Plant, UGS Plant, and Powder Plant (RTMP).

Recently, the effects of global climate changes have become top concerns for governments? decision making regarding infrastructure investments. Extreme weather events that exceed the capacity of existing systems have considerably increased in frequency, and the potential effects of changing trends in temperature and rainfall on infrastructure are difficult to ignore. It is essential for governments to estimate the costs and benefits of adaptation to climate change to properly assess the financial feasibility of infrastructure adaptation strategies. This paper proposes a framework for estimating the economic aspects of infrastructure adaptation to climate change. The framework is composed of three steps of implementation: establishment of alternatives for infrastructure adaptation, performance prediction of infrastructure using future climate scenarios, and asset valuation based on costs and benefits. The first step specifies target assets, their adaptability to climate change, and applicable adaptation technologies. The second step evaluates the effects of climate change on the performance of infrastructure. The last step determines the optimal adaptation strategies among various alternatives based on their net benefits. The framework reasonably incorporates future climate scenarios into the estimation processes for climate change effects and provides a basis for budget allocation for governmental infrastructure investments. The framework is expected to assist government decision makers in establishing adaptation strategies in a rational manner under uncertain future climate change.

Introduction During the past twenty-five years we have seen considerable exploration for oil on the plains of southern and east-central Alberta. This exploration has to some extent gone on in cycles, with periodic starts, stops, and occasionally some reversals. Each major attempt is usually supplemented by the application of some new method of exploration and, following each period of exploration, drilling tests are made. Whereas oil-bearing horizons are the ultimate objective of these explorations, the preliminary investigation frequently aims at a discovery of structure based on the long accepted belief that accumulations of oil and gas are to a marked degree structurally controlled. At the inception of this general exploration for oil, it was natural that attention should be directed to areas where there was surface evidence of deformation of the underlying strata, but, as the programme progressed, it was found that these surface manifestations of structure were often deceptive when attempts were made to project them to depth, to involve the deeper strata. Drilling of test wells was the only satisfactory method of obtaining exact information.

"INTRODUCTIONThe proper selection of carbon for a gold carbon in pulp (CIP) circuit involves careful evaluation of several physical, chemical and economic factors. A series of evaluations are required to maximize gold recovery at the lowest capital and operating costs, whether the carbon is selected for an existing gold mill circuit or a new mill under design.Although evaluation may proceed through various stages, it is the intent of this paper to outline some of the preliminary testwork that should be carried out to screen potential carbons for a particular application.An examination of the specification sheets supplied by the various carbon manufacturers may indicate some desirable properties on which to make cursory selection. This exercise by itself will not provide the basic data needed for selecting the best carbon for a particular ore pulp and metallurgical circuit. The necessity of further metallurgical evaluation is indicated by the fact that different carbons perform differently depending on the physical and chemical nature of the leach pulp. In the case of an existing mill, actual leach slurries using mill water are available and should be used for testwork. In the case of new mills, leach pulps must be prepared to simulate the proposed circuit.Five coconut shell activated carbons were obtained from various suppliers, all reported to be 6 x 16 mesh carbons recommended for CIP circuits. A metallurgical evaluation was made utilizing two leach pulps with significantly different characteristics. This paper describes the test procedures utilized and the results obtained from the testwork."

Fluidized bed technology has been widely applied to mineral and metallurgical processes. Over the years, modeling of fluidization technology has progressed to a level at which basic design parameters can usually be defined based on empirical correlations. In addition, scale-up considerations have become better understood, and significant advances have been made in the area of computer simulation. Despite these advances, fluidization is a complex phenomenon, and modeling tools remain limited in their ability to simultaneously model both fluidization and chemical process parameters. As a result, almost all mineral and metallurgical applications of fluidized bed technology require pilot testing prior commercial scale design. This paper outlines pilot plant testing requirements and process development considerations for development of low technical risk commercial designs.

Since the 14th CMMI conference, held in Edinburgh in 1990, at which a paper was presented by the author (Willis, 1990) reviewing the role of integrating new technology as a survival strategy for South African gold mines, considerable change has occurred in the South African mining industry. This paper reviews the current state of the industry and provides an update on the technologies discussed ten years ago. It reviews available technology and provides a broad economic assessment of these technologies if they were to be introduced in an integrated mining system with a focus on deep level mining below 3000 m. It also reviews possible future technologies currently being researched and developed by CSIR: Division of Mining Technology (Miningtek).

This paper describes the development of an infra-red ore dryer at the Mines Branch. The dryer utilizes an infra-red heat source mounted over a stainless-steel belt to dry ores and concentrates of varying particle size and moisture content. It has been found to ?be successful in meeting Mines Branch requirements of minimum dusting loss and ease of cleaning to decrease ,contamination between various batches of dried products. It is described with the hope that it might .prove useful in other laboratories where there are similar problems. It might have an application in the drying of concentrates containing high values where dust losses would result in a considerable loss of revenue; also for small batches of material or an intermittent drying problem.

"A selective flocculation-floe flotation technique is already in use in the Canadian potash industry for the removal of water-insoluble slimes, but the process is currently limited in its application and reagent consumption is high. The work described in this paper details investigations into the separation of sylvite and halite from water-insoluble slimes by selective flocculation utilising other commercially available polymers.Preliminary flocculation performance tests were undertaken on pure sylvite, halite and water-insoluble minerals to establish the importance of a number of experimental parameters. The data from these single mineral tests was then used to establish optimum parameters for the separation of sylvite and halite from a synthetic mixture similar in composition to a typical potash ore. Under optimum conditions, separation was achieved with high recoveries using dispersant and flocculant dosages significantly lower than those currently used in plant practice.IntroductionAlthough solar evaporation and solution mining are used in some operations, most potash is extracted by conventional underground techniques and is then processed by froth flotation, in order to separate the valuable sylvite (KCI) from halite (NaCl) and water-insoluble gangue minerals. Flotation is usually preceded by a desliming stage to remove water-insoluble fines, but this also results in high potash losses and affects process brine requirements. To overcome these problems, one plant operated by Cominco in Saskatchewan uses a selective flocculation -floe flotation process (Banks, 1979/1980), in which a polyacrylamide flocculant is added to produce floes of water-insoluble material with minimal incorporation of halides. A collector is then added to render the floes hydrophobic and suitable for removal by froth flotation.A number of workers have also investigated the use of selective flocculation in potash processing, but these too have been concerned with developments in the removal of water-insoluble slimes (Williams, 1960; Brogiotti et al, 1974; Chan et al, 1986; Thompson et al, 1979; etc.). This paper provides results of novel investigations into the selective flocculation of sylvite and halite from water-insoluble minerals and discusses the possible mechanisms involved."

"SINCE their inception, the mineral industries have, from time to time, been confronted by various and sundry problems. These have been identified, attacked and solved by means of a slow methodical process peculiar to these industries. During the past decade, these industries have experienced increasing difficulty in attracting and retaining an adequate supply of manpower. This poses a situation which seems to be unlike those that came before it in that it appears to be immune to those methods of attack which were successful in the past. Despite various attacks upon the problem, its seriousness appears to be increasing at an increasing rate. The point has now been reached where the President of AIME recently expressed the opinion that this is the most serious problem facing these industries at this time (1). Another observer has gone so far as to state, ""Given the motivation and the determination, the crisis in mineral education in Canada, can, in time be met. But it will take a generation if we Start DOW (2)"".Part of the difficulty arises out of the identification and assessment of the problem itself. For, although the manpower shortage has been developing over a fairly long period of time, there still appears to be no unanimity concerning its seriousness and the nature of the threat which it poses. Some observers continue to maintain that the current situation is not new at all, but is merely the reappearance of something old which is cyclic in nature. They observe that in the past there were numerous periods where the mineral industries encountered manpower shortages but that, in each instance, the situation eventually rectified itself. Furthermore, they draw attention to the fact that the current problem is not confined to the mineral industries but that in fact all industries are experiencing an increasing manpower shortage. They are therefore confident that if left alone the present problem will eventually disappear."

PROSPECTING is popularly supposed to be surrounded with an air of romance and adventure. The word 'prospecting' brings to mind high mountains, northern lakes, and aeroplanes. A note of urgency has been added to this by the war, particularly in the case of strategic, minerals. Prospecting for strategic minerals in a modern mine in full production, although it may Jack the romance of travel in little-known places, has the advantage of having all the necessary machinery at hand and ready to go into action at a moment's notice. HISTORY Tin was discovered in the Sullivan ore in 1925, when a white streak was noticed on a pilot table which was being used to check the amount of galena in the tailing. The mineral which made up this streak was identified as cassiterite. The amount of tin in the ore is so small that, while of scientific interest, it was considered to be of very little economic importance. Nevertheless, several attempts were made to learn something of the occurrence during times when other work was nor pressing. These studies were dropped when anything came up that seemed more important.

Introduction The Britannia mine is at Britannia Beach, on Howe sound, approximately thirty miles from Vancouver. The first claims were staked in 1898, and a local company was formed at that time to develop them. In 1904, Mr. Grant B. Schley became actively interested in the property and in the following year the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, was incorporated to operate it. This Company was taken over a few years later by the Howe Sound Company, Limited. The mine comprises five more or less separate ore-bodies, which have produced approximately 20,000,000 tons of ore to date. The East Bluff ore-body, with which the present paper deals, is well suited to large-scale mining by means of carefully placed powder blasts. It covers approximately an acre and lies in the slate footwall, in a bay produced by a fault. The hanging-wall side, on the west, forms the face of the Bluff glory-hole, which extends to the 1,200 level. A portion of this ore was available for breaking into this old glory-hole, below which four bulldoze chambers could quickly be built. Mining of this block is complicated by a very soft footwall, which 'runs' badly when broken. In stoping, care is taken to guard against the hazard of dilution by deliberately leaving a small portion of ore on the footwall. Some of this will undoubtedly be lost, but it is hoped to recover a fair amount of it after the major drawing is completed. The deposit occurs in a greenstone which has been highly silicified following brecciation. The chief minerals are chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite. Concentrates of copper, zinc, and pyrite are made at the mill. The average grade of ore runs 0.7 per cent copper, 1.5 per cent zinc, and 0.03 oz. gold per ton. The rock, which is practically a chert, is extremely hard, but shatters well. Both in stoping and drifting, holes must be closely spaced and powder used generously. Development When development work started in the East Bluff, there were no raises and only one drift on each level in this section of the mine. After blocking out the ore by thorough diamond drilling, a production of two thousand tons per day was set as a goal. To obtain this tonnage from so small an area required a great deal of carefully planned and well timed development work.

"The Mine property comprises some 700 acres in ranges VI and VII, Barraute township, about thirty-seven miles due north of Val d'Or in northwestern Quebec.The transformation of a small farming community into the youngest and largest zinc producer in eastern Canada began late in the autumn of 1950. At this time, a geological survey party of the Quebec Department of Mines discovered sphalerite-pyrite mineralization in a strong regional shear structure crossing range VII of Barraute township. Diamond drilling commenced in November 1950, and by June 1951 a total of more than 63,000 feet of drilling, at fifty-foot intervals, had explored an ore zone 2,500 feet in length and 102 feet in average width to a depth of 700 feet, the deepest ore intersection.Production started late in 1952, and is at present in excess of 4,000 tons per day. Production in 1954 of77,790, 166 lbs. of zinc and 989,610 oz. of silver, from 1,525,284 tons of ore, makes this mine the largest zinc producer in eastern Canada.General GeologyAll the consolidated rocks of the area are Precambrian, and most of them are volcanic. They consist mainly of subsiliceous Javas, with smaller amounts of siliceous to intermediate lavas and pyroclastic rocks. The lavas have been intruded contemporaneously by many sill-like bodies of coarser-grained diorite and gabbro. There are no sedimentary rocks within ten miles of the mine.A period of major folding and faulting was followed by intrusion of granite. The volcanic rocks have been compressed into isoclinal folds trending roughly east-west, and the granitic batholiths also show a rude lineal alignment in the same direction. The granitic masses vary consider-ably in composition, ranging from the potassic LaCorne granite, ten miles south of the mine, to the sodic Duverny mass, ten miles west. In addition there is a variation from a general granitic core to dioritic and gabbroic phases on the margins and in satellitic intrusions."

The main application of refractories based on andalusite in ferrous metallurgy are in air heaters of blast furnaces, mobile mixers, and hot-metal transfer, pig iron ladle, steel-casting, and intermediate ladles. Three specific properties of andalusite are very interesting for the production of high-quality shaped and unshaped mullite refractories: being free of water, its crystal a remains stable without changing its density or volume after firing and therefore has no internal porosity .Graphite additives due to its great wetting ability play an important role in raising the property of refractory bodies. In order to improve properties of andalusite graphite bodies, oxidant agent for increasing in hot strength and oxidation resistance can not be avoided. In this research, firstly 8 pig iron ladles from ESC(esfahan Steel company) with different conditions selected and monitored during usage to determine of main factors affecting on corrosion of refractories. Results showed that tap to tap time, undischarged pig iron ,penetrated pig iron are the main ones.Literature studies showed that the graphite addition help to thermal shock resistance and liquid penetration(steel,pig iron) effect. In this research particle size distribution of aggregates containing andalusite and graphite determined by andreazen equation. Then different mixes with different percentage of graphite,Si, FeSi, SiC prepared by uniaxially pressing under 1500kgf/cm2 pressure by adding 4%wt novalak resin and 0.4%wt HMTA as hardner. Samples fired at 1100-1500oC under reduction atmosphere. According to specific standards density, porosity and CCS measured. Analytical tests such as XRD, SEM were carried out on sample selected from point of view of mechanical properties at different temperatures. Results showed that optimized amount of Si and Fe-Si for _-SiC formation in body is 4 and 6 %wt respectively at 1500OC. XRD and SEM analysis on sample with Fe-Si additives showed no destructive phase through the matrix, also SiC additives not only increase oxidation resistance but also no effect on thermo-mechanical properties.

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is one of the fastest growing types of solid waste in the world, and often contains precious metals, especially gold. Gold processing and recovery from secondary materials, especially WEEE, have been under investigation for more than a decade now; however, a comprehensive review that illuminates the future path is missing in the literature. The aim of this short paper is to discuss the recent advances in gold processing and recovery from secondary electronic materials and why it has not yet become practical. The role of pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods, as well as their advantages and disadvantages will be discussed; however, the focus will be on Biosorption and recent advances.

"A series of flotation tests was carried out on Brunswick Mining ore with various pH modifiers (soda ash, lime, KOH) and added ions (ferric, nitrate, sulphate) in the copper lead rougher circuit. The main objective was to identify downstream effects on sphalerite activation and subsequent zinc rougher flotation. Some significant differences in zinc flotation were obtained. Most notably, soda ash and nitrate ions had a positive impact and ferric ions a pronounced negative effect on selectivity.Selected products from the flotation tests were deslimed at 400 mesh, washed with methanol, air dried, placed in teflon vials purged with nitrogen and stored at -15 degrees C. Numerous liberated sphalerite and pyrite particles were selected under a stereoscope and placed in rows on indium foil. The surface compositions of the particles were analyzed with an innovative laser probe (LIMS). The very small analysis area of the LIMS enables the surfaces of individual grains to be characterized. In addition, the rapid analysis time allows a statistically significant number of grains to be analyzed quickly.Surface lead appears to play a major role in zinc activation/flotation. Possible mechanisms are proposed to explain the variations in metallurgical performance at the different test conditions.IntroductionAlthough the bulk composition of mineral grains is an important consideration for the mineral processor it is ultimately surface composition and topography (edges and dislocations preferred sites for reactions) that control reactivity in flotation and cyanidation (passivation, encapsulation and preg-robbing). "Accurate, easy to obtain, and reliable methods of measurement are the cornerstone of shaft and tunnel developments - during their sinking, operation and maintenance, or in some cases, remediation. This paper presents a new methodology to capture existing shaft conditions in such a manner that they can be transferred from the field to a digital copy, where they can be stored and used for engineering design purposes in a space not directly affected by the costs associated with schedule and equipment performance. The methodology utilizes basic principles of excavation alignment (plumb lines and survey instruments) while adding modern LiDAR, geolocation and survey control tools that can more completely capture the surrounding environment. The complete cycle of collection, processing, and delivery of pertinent information underground can take under an hour. During sinking, capturing data as a live stream measurement and being able to assess the alignment of the shaft liner can be critical to meeting rigid design tolerances. As sinking progresses, small changes in alignment or liner deviations can be captured and immediately corrected. Likewise, post-construction as-built conditions can be recorded and digitized, which will allow the mine personnel to compare the proper working condition to the actual condition years later. Observed changes can be identified and planned as future shaft repair works. This methodology has been developed and successfully deployed during the on-going sinking works of the two shafts at the Jansen Potash Project in south-central Saskatchewan and is described in greater detail in this paper.INTRODUCTION Light Detection and Ranging (or LiDAR) scans of the BHP Jansen Production and Service shafts during construction identified sections of both shafts where the internal radius of the temporary primary liner was insufficient to accommodate the tolerances of the permanent liner that was to be installed inside the temporary liner. These locations are referred to as “tights”. The “Tights Removal Program” was designed to collect high resolution point clouds of the shaft, using stringent survey control, that could be compared to the design profile to generate a heat map of locations for removal of up to 75 mm of steel-fiber-reinforced, 70 MPa concrete liner. This work was all on critical path, which made it valuable to save time on the schedule. Because concrete removal was a time-intensive task, it was essential to locate and remove only the concrete that would encroach on the planned permanent liner, while attempting to maximize the amount of cutting time. Removal was carried by a road header attached to a Brokk(R) 160, a small multi-attachment demolition machine."

JX Nippon Mining and Metals Corporation has developed the JX Iodine Process, which is an innovative and patented copper-leaching process for low-grade primary sulfide ores. This process consists of the irrigation of ferric iron and a low concentration of iodide solutions. One-meter column leaching tests were conducted on ore samples from two different mines. At the end of experiments, the total copper recovery exceeded 70% for Sample A and 50% for Sample B with the iodine method, which was significantly higher than that with conventional ferric leaching of 14% for Sample A and 20% for Sample B. To elucidate the reason for the JX Iodine Process effectiveness, cross sections of leached residues were studied. Reaction products were confirmed around chalcopyrite even in the central area of particles in Sample A, however, reaction products were recognized at a depth of only 1 mm from the ore rim in Sample The resistance of Sample A to the leachate appeared to be lower than that of Sample B because Sample A had a high permeability and porosity, whereas Sample B had been affected strongly by a potassium alteration. No reaction products were visible on conventional leaching samples, even at the ore surfaces. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical copper leaching (heap leaching or dump leaching) has been used extensively for copper recovery from oxide and secondary-sulfide ores, but not for primary copper sulfides, which contain mainly chalcopyrite as copper minerals. Although they are major resources of copper, primary copper sulfides are difficult to process because of their refractory nature. Extensive leaching studies have been carried out to leach primary copper sulfides (chalcopyrite), including biological and chemical, using a variety of oxidants and additives to enhance copper recovery. Watling (2013) reviewed acid-chloride-oxidizing agents with chalcopyrite. Abdollahi et al. (2015) tested silver as a catalyst for bioleaching with a chalcopyrite-bearing molybdenite concentrate. Hiroyoshi, Miki, Hirajima and Tsunekawa (2000) found a specific redox-potential zone for high-speed chalcopyrite leaching by controlling the ratio of ferric and ferrous iron. However, no ambient-temperature economic process has been developed for leaching primary copper sulfide, which usually has a low copper grade.

The Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) Navachab single stage SAG mill has provided an excellent setting for incremental optimization. Over the past decades, several interventions have resulted in marked improvements in specific performance; including steel ball scat removal, re-design of the mill lifters, replacement the pebble crusher and cyclone cluster, as well as the use of a vibrating screen in place of a discharge trommel. Recent initiatives now include an operating fine DMS circuit, studies on pre-crushing of the ROM feed and also fine-screening as an alternative to hydrocyclone classification. The current optimized state of the Navachab mill allows it to operate at approximately 20% higher efficiency when compared to mills of similar shell dimensions in gold mining, treating similar ore. This paper describes the systematic improvement of the SAG circuit to its current state.

Unknown goafs and roadways of abandoned coalmines can be a great water inrush hazard for coalmine workers. Consequently, advance detection of such hazards is of great importance. By detonating seismic charges in underground coal seams, we can collect seismic data using a surface survey line, which is located across the ground projection of the underground shot point. This experiment was conducted in a coalmine in Shaanxi Province, China. After surface elevation compensation and travel time adjustments, we accurately determined the position of the goaf boundary along the survey line based on the wave velocity anomaly on the seismic record. Then we used a scattered wave imaging technique to enhance the energy of the scattered waves that are generated when the coal seam roof slide wave (refracted wave when the incident angle bigger than the critical angle) hits the roadway, thus confirming location of a geological discontinuity (roadway). This experiment shows that the coalmine ground seismic method, employing an underground explosive charge and a surface seismic array, has the ability to detect an abandoned roadway and goaf in advance of coal mining, thus can improve worker safety.

THE greatest problem confronting business managers in modern times is not production, but distribution. It would be easy to expand productive output, but it is difficult to find markets for all that is produced. The fundamental source of economic difficulty, in the view of many observers, is a lack of proper balance between productive capacity and consumptive capacity. The studies conducted by the Brookings Institution on the general subject, "The Distribution of Income in Relation to Economic Progress", have led to conclusions of far-reaching significance, which may be summarized briefly as follows: (1) We have never lived beyond our economic means or capacity. (2) We have not been suffering from general overproduction. (3) We have not as yet reached a stage in our economic evolution at which it is possible to provide adequate standards of living for everybody. ( 4) It would require less than a 25 per cent increase in purchasing power among the masses to absorb our full productive capacity. (5) Production-curtailment programmes-whatever their merit in meeting temporary maladjustments-can only lead to national impoverishment. (6) Our inability to find markets adequate to absorb the full output of our productive establishments is explained by the unequal distribution of income and consequent restricted flow of purchasing power through consumptive channels. (7) The slow rate of growth of consumptive demand serves to retard the rate at which new capital is constructed, and hence the rate of economic progress. (8) The primary need is a rapidly expanding total income, and a broader diffusion of this income among the masses of the people. (9) A broader diffusion of income can best be achieved by reducing prices as rapidly as increasing efficiency will permit.
