"La mine Agnico-Eagle, localisée près de Joutel, a été découverte en 1962 par le forage d'anomalies électromagnétiques. Exploitée à partir de 1974, elle a déjà produit près de 30 tonnes d’or à partir de 2 puits, le puits Eagle et le puits Telbel, distants de 1,3 km.Le gisement est situé entre le sommet du complexe volcanique de Joutel, à dominante felsique, et la base de l'ensemble sédimentaire de la rivière Harricana. Ces deux unités ont une extension régionale; elles sont orientées NW-SE avec une polarité NE et des pendages subverticaux. Une faille majeure, la faille Harricana, passe de façon subconcordante au contact de ces deux ensembles.La minéralisation aurifère, de 2 à 5 m d’épaisseur moyenne, est liée a une zone carbonatée, comprise entre des tufs felsiques, argilites et sédiments chimiques (éponte inferieure) et des argilites carbonatées (éponte supérieure). Le minerai est constitué habituellement de 20% de fine pyrite disséminée. L’or est en fines particules associées directement à ces grains de pyrite de texture cataclastique.Deux modelés ont été for mules jusqu' a présent pour expliquer la genèse du gisement: une thèse syngenetique (Barnett et a/.1982) et une thèse épigénétique (Wyman et al. 1986). Cette dernière apparalt comme la plus probable du fait de la présence de la minéralisation dans les zones cisaillées a carbonates secondaires et pyrite cataclastique."

A DIGHEM survey was flown in the Belford-Montcalm Township area of Ontario in November 1975. This 600-linemile survey resulted in the detection of 134 EM anomalies. The Montcalm Township copper-nickel discovery yielded a single-line anomaly having a conductance of 154 mhos. This anomaly was highly visible because (a) it had the highest conductance in the survey area, (b) it correlated with a 175-gamma thumbprint-shaped magnetic anomaly and (c) it was isolated from long conductive bands. The deposit is a copper-nickel pyrrhotite body which occurs in gabbro and strikes north-south, parallel to the flight lines. The DIGHEM survey was flown north-south, because the exploration program was primarily concerned with locating copper-zinc sulphides in the east-west-striking felsic volcanics. The flight line passed close to the deposit and yielded a 9-ppm anomaly on the chart record. The computer analysis showed that a deposit of exceptionally high conductance (154 mhos) caused the relatively weak (9 ppm) anomaly. The ground follow-up program of magnetics and EM led quickly to the discovery drill hole, which penetrated the orebody in September 1976. Subsequent geophysical surveys consisted of horizontal-loop EM, pulse EM, magnetic and induced polarization surveys over an area of about 8 claims. In addition, a detailed DIGHEM" airborne survey was flown at a line spacing of 100 m to evaluate the entire property of 620 claims. This detailed survey yielded EM conductor maps and contour maps of resistivity, magnetics and enhanced magnetics.

MOST mines have a model of some kind to illustrate either geological structure, mining operation, or some special condition or feature of the property. The type used depends on the particular feature or use for which it is intended. At Dome Mines we have developed an interesting and practical application of the horizontal-type model. This model shows the workings of each level horizon plotted on glass. These glass panes are set in frames which, in turn, rest on drawers equipped with rollers which can be pulled out as desired into a light chamber. The features of this model are its rigid steel construction and that any desired number of level plans can be pulled out, eliminating any other interference from other levels. Figures 1 and 2 are photographs of the model cabinet and show its construction and general features. The cabinet is of steel construction with the following overall dimensions: width, 6 ft. 5 in.; depth, 6 ft. 7 in.; height, 5 ft. 2 in. When not in use it can be completely closed-in, making the cabinet practically dustproof. There are 30 drawers, one for each of the 29 levels and one for the surface. The glass in each drawer is divided into two panes, 36 in. by 36 in., of flatdrawn double-diamond 'lustraglass' with about l/32 in. between adjacent edges. The panes are held rigidly in the frames, which are lined with felt strips, and may be adjusted by set screws, four of which on each drawer are shown in Figures 1 and 2. The level workings, on a scale of 1 inch equals 100 feet, are traced in ivory black Windsor & Newtons artist oil paint. Co-ordinate lines are shown in crimson lake, and main geological contacts are shown in their respective colours. Figure 3 is a photograph looking down on one of the levels. The lighting consists of 14 30-watt fluorescent bulbs, with reflectors, under frosted glass. These lamps are much more satisfactory when operated by 60-cycle rather than 25-cycle and, as we had available nearby a source of direct current, this was used. The electrical unit consists of a rotary converter from d.c. to 60-cycle. This arrangement gives perfect lighting, allowing most colours to be easily distinguished. The history, geological setting and local geology of the Magnum vein system, 100 miles west of Fort Nelson in northeastern British Columbia, are described. The system comprises a number of quartz-ankerite veins, mineralized with chalcopyrite and lesser pyrite, occurring in a steep northeastly zone of deformation and subsequent dike intrusion within otherwise little-deformed Precambrian sedimentary rocks. In April of 1970, Churchill Copper Corporation began producing copper concentrates in a 750-tpd mill fed from the Magnum mine.

"Abstract - The Stewart mining camp has a long history of precious and base metal mining. The camp is abundantly mineralized, with more than 200 widespread, varied, vein prospects, deposits and orebodies. These show wide variations in the mineralogy of ore, gangue and alteration assemblages, and wide variations in textures and structural settings. This report establishes the timing of the different metallogenic epochs and suggests a specific exploration application for systematic lead isotope analyses.Galena lead isotope ratios from a range of mineral occurrences indicate that all these varieddeposits formed during two main mineralizing events. Lead isotope data from the Stewart mining camp do not provide absolute ages for the formation of mineral deposits, but the relative distributions of data are consistent with dates determined in other studies. One ore-forming episode occurred in the Barly Jurassic and the other in the Middle Eocene. Both metallogenic epochs were brief, regional-scale phenomena. Sorne deposits from the younger mineralizing episode were em­ placed adjacent to or superimposed on the older deposits.Field and laboratory studies show that the two metallogenic epochs are characterized by different base and precious metal suites: Barly Jurassic gold-silver-zinc-lead-copper; and Middle Eocene silver-lead-zinc. Therefore, showings of different ages have different base and precious metal potentials and deserve different exploration emphasis. Lead isotope studies provide a reliable, cost-effective method for evaluating the age and commodity potential of small or recently discovered mineral showings and for setting exploration priorities on properties with several varied mineral occurrences . The determination of the age and metal potential of a prospect at an early stage of exploration may govern the urgency, intensity or even the necessity for further exploration work."

Rheological measurements have found a wide array of applications in mineral processing research. Rheological properties of mineral suspensions are highly dependent on the mineral surface properties as described by DLVO theory, and the relationship between these properties and inter-particle interactions is well established. In this paper, rheological properties of mineral suspensions are used to study the differences in behaviour of isotropic talc and anisotropic zirconia minerals as a function of varying properties of the suspension medium, such as pH and polymer dosage, specifically carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). It was found that the rheological tests when carried out in parallel with electrophoretic or point of zero charge measurements, clearly reveal differences between behaviour of the suspensions of isotropic and anisotropic minerals. These differences are further accentuated with the addition of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC).

Non-contacting, radioisotope density and level gauges are discussed. The characteristics of the more commonly used isotopes, the techniques of detection and the methods of presenting information are reviewed. The gauge parameters of accuracy, response time and long-term stability are tabulated with reference to calibration techniques and operating requirements. Automatic control systems, both pneumatic and electrical, are used in conjunction with density gauges on filter feeds, and in thickener underflow and heavy media processes. These systems are described. Procedures for installation, start-up and operator training are outlined, along with considerations of preventative maintenance and service requirements. Typical gauge system costs, including capital expenditure, installation, start-up and service, are presented, wherever possible, in order to provide a basis of comparison with more conventional systems.

The lower Middle Devonian Sylvania Sandstone occurs in the sub-surface in the western part of Mal-den township, Essex county, Ontario. The formation is composed of well rounded, frosted quartz grains with a silica content varying from 42 to 93 per cent and the grains are cemented by carbonate, constituting up to 57 per cent of the rock. This sand-stone is not a homogeneous bed but is divided by strata rich in carbon-ate cement. The thickness of the Sylvania in Malden township varies up to a known maximum thickness of 88 feet. The lower contact with the chert-bearing Bois Blanc formation is sharp but the upper contact with the Amherstburg formation (Detroit River group) exists as a transition by a gradual downward increase in quartz grains. The Sylvania would seem to outcrop in the lake bottom near the mouth of the Detroit River dipping to the north along a broad anticline the axis of which follows the Detroit River. This paper reviews the coal mining operations of The Canmore Mines, Limited, at Canmore, Alberta, paying particular attention to the use of this coal by the metallurgical and chemical industries. The characteristics of the deposits are outlined, and the mining and processing methods used are discussed. Introduction M INING in the Cascade coal area of Alberta began form-ally in 1886 when the Canadian Anthracite Coal Company was granted its charter. Earlier operations had been confined to prospecting and family-type enterprises serving the market area within barging distance on the Bow river. From 1886 to 1964, seven mines were opened between Banff and Ribbon Creek; six of these have since been abandoned, leaving the B c 0 L. original tenant, under the name of The Canmore Mines, Limited, as the sole survivor. The town of Canmore, hub of the mining ventures, is located on the main line of the C.P.R. and on the Trans-Canada Highway, 67 rail miles west of Calgary and 57 4 miles east of Vancouver, as shown in Figure 1.

With an increase of mining depth, a series of mining-induced hazards such as rockburst, coal and gas outburst, roof collapse, and water burst are getting more serious and more frequent. The intrinsic mechanism responsible for the occurrence of mining-induced hazards is the damage and unstable failure of rockmass or coal seam. The most distinct difference between deep and shallow levels is the so-called three ‘high’ (H3) conditions, i.e. high geo-stress, high fluid pressure and high geo-temperature. Therefore, the response of rock or coal to the deep mining operation is a phenomenon involving thermal (T), hydraulic (H), and mechanical (M) processes. Most importantly, mining excavation may vary the rock stress condition greatly, which may be a key factor to trigger the mining-induced hazards such as rockburst. In this regard, it is of great significance to clarify the damage and failure mechanism of rock and coal under coupled THM conditions, in order to clarify the rock failure mechanism responsible for the occurrence of mining-induced hazards. Thereafter, the mining-induced hazards cannot be predicted with confidence by considering each process independently. Of course, the requirement to include coupling of these processes depends on the specifics of the mining-induced hazards under consideration. For example, the water inrush is considered as a coupled hydro-mechanical (HM) process, in which the unstable failure of rockmass occurs under the combined contribution of geo-stress and water pressure. As for the coal mining at depth, in addition to high geo-stress and gas pressure in coal seam, the high geo-thermal condition that may greatly change the adsorption / desorption of gas and gas flow should be taken into account. Firstly, a general-purpose mathematical model for rock damage and failure process under coupled THM conditions is formulated based on damage mechanics principle, and it is solved by finite element method (FEM). In this model, the deformation and damage of rock, fluid flow and thermal transfer in rock would interact with each other, one process affects and initiation and progress of another. Then, the model is used to predict the mining-induced water outburst, where it is simulated as coupled hydro-mechanical (HM) problems. Based on the numerical simulation, the dimension of water-proof pillar is designed. Finally, the gas drainage from deep coal seam is numerically evaluated, where the coupled coal-gas interaction considering the effect of gas adsorption/desorption, gas flow in coal seam and geo-stress and geotemperature, is comprehensively taken into account. The proposed model could be used for clarifying the mechanism of mining-induced hazards in deep-level mining.

Exploration at both Greenfields and Brownfields stages entails business risks of different nature and success rates. Greenfields exploration is exceedingly assumptive and the success rate of exploration or return on investment is low because exploration is an inherently risky business. Brownfields exploration on the other hand is less risky, as the geology is better understood, but generally speaking since the larger ore bodies close to surface have already been found the return is lower. In addition, most exploration at the Brownfields stage is generally more expensive due to extensive use of drilling. Surface geology mapping and expensive drilling have been key technical contributors to most exploration programs over the last two decades. However, as client expectations, logistics, target depths and complexity of exploration programs increase, there has been a growing emphasis on using geophysical techniques to complement other methods. Integration and optimization of various geoscientific disciplines is becoming more important in successful exploration programs of the future to reduce exploration risks, successful integrated exploration requires putting reliable geophysical parameters and correspondent petrophysical property contrasts into an assumed or conceptual geological model. This paper discusses a new multi-parameter geophysical methodology finalized in a unique conceptual geologic model which can be used either as a root model in grassroots exploration or as an efficient tool in Brownfields exploration to successfully find satellite orebodies of almost any size. The application of a new multi-parametric geophysical approach to Brownfields exploration is illustrated with examples from Manitoba, including a past producing nickel sulphide deposit in Lynn Lake and the Reed Copper deposit, currently in development.

"Globalization of the aluminium industry continues to increase the pace of change and the intensity of competition, while simultaneously, society demands better products, cleaner technologies and sustainable industries. Bechtel, a global engineering, construction and project management company, is not immune to either the opportunities or the challenges created by globalization. However, and not withstanding the challenges, for aluminium industry ""players"" with a true global perspective, globalization presents very real opportunities that may be leveraged to deliver value creating goods and services. The following paper will focus on the exploitation of one of the opportunities created by globalization in the Knowledge Management domain - the application of high level tools and methodologies to improve global delivery of greenfield and brownfield aluminium smelter construction projects. Specific examples will be presented of value driven solutions that were delivered at the early stages of project engineering."

ABSTRACT A significant factor in evaluating bitumen recovery from an oil sands mine is the particle size distribution (PSD). Increased understanding of mined ore quality and improvement in predictions of recovery can be achieved through PSD modeling. This paper addresses PSD modeling using geostatistics. PSDs may be described using many discrete particle sizes, making this a challenge. The approach parameterizes PSDs with a few statistics. A lookup table is used to reconstruct the PSDs based on models of the statistics. The workflow is applied to Total E&P Canada’s Joslyn Lease and yields good results that reproduce input statistics without introducing artifacts.

"IntroductionMANY PAPERS presented on developments in the Canadian Petroleum Industry •during the past few years have commenced with this general sentence: ""The past year has been a record •one for the oil industry in Canada, with new records being set in nearly all phases •of exploration and development ,activity"". This sentence applies equally well to 1951. It is not possible to outline all the details of the broken records in exploration, development, and production but general comparisons can be made. There are several significant developments that have stolen the spotlight during 1951, some of which were foreseen in 1950 and some which were not. Among the high-lights were the following:(1) The greatly •expanded activity in the search for gas, which was touched off by the new Alberta regulations covering gas leases and reservations.(2) The discovery of commercial oil production in the Williston basin of North Dakota and Manitoba, which will have far reaching effects on Canadian oil.(3) The greatly increased activity in northern Alberta, northwestern British Columbia, the southern Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.(4) The new discoveries in the general central Alberta area.(5) The granting •of a permit for an oil pipeline to the Pacific coast.(6) The arrival of Western Canadian crude in central Ontario.(7) The number of new refineries completed, commenced, or proposed.(8) The present •and proposed expansion in the petrochemical industry.Most of the remarks made on various exploration and development •activities will refer to Western Canada operations, primarily because the greatest •activity and the most significant developments have been there. Eastern Canada exploration and development operations were at a slightly higher level than in 1950."

Pipeline operation and maintenance necessarily involves geotechnical studies at points and areas with deflagrated instabilities or still to map and monitor areas prone to geotechnical problems. Landslides, erosions and debris flows are some examples of natural hazards, that not rarely, can bring high consequences to pipelines, sometimes leading them to high stresses levels and ruptures. Bolivia-Brazil Natural Gas Pipeline has 2.593 kilometers since Rio Grande City in Bolivia until Canoas City, in south Brazil. The pipeline crosses a lot of types of geological fields and difficult topography. The south spread of the pipeline has the most prone areas to geotechnical hazards because of its hard topography combined with the variety of geological materials, such as, colluvium deposits and debris flow areas. The aim of this paper is to present the right-of-way geotechnical risks that affect pipelines, presenting some practical remedial works done by TBG at Bolivia-Brazil Natural Gas Pipeline as well as the integrity plan and the adopted actions in way to prevent geotechnical accidents.

"A novel methodology was developed to obtain a 3D porous layer with a high aspect ratio of porosity on a titanium electrode. The porous structure allowed more active material such as hydrous ruthenium oxide to be accommodated during the fabrication of the supercapacitor, resulting in an exceptionally high capacitance per surface area. The electrode demonstrated a remarkably high capacitance of 4,800 mF/cm2. The porous layer was composed of functionalized nanoparticles of TiO2 organized in a perfect 3D hexagonal close-packed array that resulted in a highly porous 3D structure. The layer was used as a template to electrolessly deposit a thin layer of silver prior to the electrodeposition of active material. La structure poreuse permet d’utiliser une matière plus active telle que l’oxyde de ruthénium hydraté durant la fabrication du supercondensateur, ce qui se traduit par une capacité exceptionnellement élevée par surface active. L’électrode affichait une capacité remarquablement élevée de 4 800 mF/cm2. La couche poreuse était composée de nanoparticules fonctionnalisées de dioxyde de titane (TiO2) organisées dans un arrangement regroupé parfaitement hexagonal en 3D, qui a engendré une structure en 3D hautement poreuse. Cette couche a servi de modèle pour le dépôt autocatalytique d’une fine couche d’argent avant l’électrodéposition de la matière active. The manufacturing of compact energy storage elements needs to be compatible with the electronic circuit microfabrication processes. Recently, interest in integrating miniaturized supercapacitors into electronic circuits has increased due to their high charge–discharge rate and long operating life; however, ultra-high power miniaturized supercapacitors suffer from low energy density, hence requiring significant enhancement in their energy density for various applications (Deng et al., 2011; Beidaghi & Wang, 2012; Chen et al., 2014)."

"In the Utility Nickel furnaces, the hearth and sidewalls are lined with high-Al2O3 bricks. During charging and thermal cycling (more so as the linings on these reverberatory furnaces age), pieces of brick spall or abrade from the refractory and collect on the top of the bath. These pieces are removed using a non-corrosive slag toward the end of the heat when the bath temperature is ~1600°C.This benign liquid can be generated by two methods. First and most obvious, suitable ingredients can be pre-mixed so that the flux (flux A) is isochemical with the non-corrosive slag. All that is needed to produce this targetted slag is heat. Second, in other proportions (flux B), the pre-mixed ingredients generate a corrosive slag that melts completely at -1200 °C and corrodes some but not all of the brick particles on the bath surface. As the reaction progresses, the slag changes composition eventually attaining the targetted benign composition. Using this option, additions are monitored to avoid overfluxing. In both cases, the generated slag/brick mixture can then be rabbled from the furnace. This practice has been successfully used for over two years and has been a factor in extending Utility Nickel furnace life to its current levels (about25% increase)."

The copper I SAS MELT? process is a submerged lance bath smelting technology. In the 20 years since the process was first demonstrated on a semicommercial scale at Mount Isa in north-west Queensland, Australia, copper ISASMELT? plants have been constructed to treat concentrates or secondary raw materials around the world. The process is operating in smelters in Australia, the USA, Belgium, India, Germany, China and Zambia. ISASMELT? plants have been installed to improve the environmental performance of operating smelters and reduce costs for smelting companies. A new copper furnace is being commissioned at Southern Peru Copper Corporation in early 2007, while more furnaces are under design for installation in Kazakhstan and Peru. Copper ISASMEL T? plants are supplied as complete technology packages including engineering design services for the furnace and key ancillaries, supply of core equipment, provision of intensive training programs in operating plant environments and commissioning assistance services. The proven technology transfer process ensures successful implementation of submerged lance bath smelting into large scale plants. This paper summarises developments at recently constructed copper ISASMELT? plants.

"The Val d'Or Division now comprises the Lucien C. Beliveau Mine and Concentrator (formerly the Pascalis, described below) and the Chimo Mine. Cambior acquired an initial 50% interest in the Chimo Mine in May 1989 and the remaining 50% in April 1990. Cambior's share of 1989 production was 2121 ounces; the company expects to net 23 750 ounces from Chimo in 1990. Pascalis MineUPDATERenamed the Lucien C. Beliveau Mine at its official inauguration in September 1989, the mine is exceeding forecasts, producing over 11 500 ounces of gold in the first half of 1990. Cambior expects 1990 production to total 34 000 ounces.IntroductionThe Pascalis Mine is located 16 miles east o f Val d'Or, Quebec, and is accessible by a three mile gravel road off highway 117 (Fig. I).The property is wholly owned by Cambior.The Pascalis gold deposit consists o f a sub-vertical diorite dyke 1000 ft long by 30 ft wide containing quartz and tourmaline veins with inclusions of pyrite and native gold . Three vein systems ca n be seen in the deposit , the most important being tensile veins oriented at a right angle to the direction of the dyke and inclined at 40 degrees. These overlapping veins vary in thickness from 4 in. to 40 in. and occur at intervals of six to ten ft. The deposit is, therefore, very difficult to evaluate; a complete evaluation would require drifts over the whole width of the dyke combined with relatively short drill holes (Fig . 2)."
