Bulga prospect in central New South Wales is a small but well documented volcano- genic massive sulphide occurrence (450,000t of 0.8% Cu, 1.3% Pb, 5% Zn and 0.45 g/t Au) Cambrell and Kirk (1974), and Chisholm, (1976). Mineralization is localised near the interface of felsic pyroclastics with overlying silt- stones and along adjacent faults (Fig. 1). OZ Minerals’ Carrapateena mine is a Sublevel cave mine located in South Australia, approximately 160 km north of the regional centre of Port Augusta. Carrapateena commenced underground development in 2016, with production commencing in 2019 and ramping up to 4.25 Mtpa by December 2020. In pursuit of continual improvement, the Carrapateena mining team sought to identify how it could better interrogate its current productivity levels and its drivers (root causes). During this process the team were confronted by a disconcerting number of different opinions (which often conflicted) on our actual productivity performance which led to a need for review. Although reliable data and a well-designed time utilisation model (TUM) existed, it was still unclear what actions needed to be put in place to improve productivity. This was for the following reasons: • Data sources were disparate unless significant effort was applied to compile them. • Data sources were not available in a format that could be easily viewed or analysed. • General understanding of the data which was collected and how it could be used was poor. • Process of regularly analysing performance and forming tangible actions to improve was lacking rigour. A project was then started with the goal to fix the areas stated above. An initial requirements gathering exercise was undertaken to identify key data sources for site which returned a staggering 42 known systems which were then shortlisted to the key systems that contained operational data and could generate tangible improvements when analysed. This paper discusses the approach to selecting the OZ Minerals Insights Hub as the chosen platform, and the effort and collaboration between cross-functional departments that was involved in transforming the data so it could be displayed in a useful way. The data sources identified included a fleet management system, two planning databases, a control system historian, and a mobile fleet machine data system. New processes were also introduced to digitally capture daily commentary; this was achieved utilising SharePoint Forms. Data pipelines were then developed in the Insights Hub platform to automate the ingestion and transformation of the raw mining data into curated data models for end user consumption. Tableau dashboard packages have been created to support facilitation of short interval control, daily review meetings, and weekly review meetings as well as data analysis of key equipment and locations. These dashboards visualise the mining data models in a form that provides the user a clear picture of what has occurred, why it has occurred, and where to focus improvement efforts. This has resulted in a team which is more accountable, more equipped to assess the root cause of performance, and more regularly able to make data driven decisions. The next step? To build this out from Mine to Mill and create a data indexing tool which will drive self-service reporting, a data agnostic platform and predictive tools that help our people continue to be one step in front.

A desulfurised tailings cover was installed at the Detour Lake Mine in Ontario, Canada, to reduce oxygen penetration into the underlying sulfidic tailings. The cover ranges from one to 1.5 m in thickness and was intended to maintain high water saturation to reduce oxygen diffusion and consume oxygen by oxidation of the residual sulfide minerals. The tailings impoundment was instrumented to measure climatic parameters, water levels and water content profiles within the tailings and single-layer cover. One year of monitoring data was collected. Additional tailings samples were obtained for geotechnical and geochemical characterisation. The average grain size of the cover material was found to be coarser than the underlying tailings. Monitoring also indicated that air entry values of the cover material were lower than the tailings. Numerical modelling was conducted on the cover to predict water content profiles under varying climate conditions together with the depth of oxygen penetration and diffusive oxygen fluxes. Estimates of the diffusion coefficient and kinetic oxidation rates from field data compared well with values obtained by laboratory measurements. Numerical simulations indicate water saturations of less than 85 per cent can be expected under varying climate conditions. Predicted oxygen flux rates through the desulfurised cover over tailings with high acid potential indicate low flux rates reaching these tailings due to either consumption of oxygen by residual sulfur within the cover or saturation of the underlying tailings.

Cr-Ni-Cu¦PGE deposits are known to occur in early Archaean mafic-ultramafic rocks. Early Archaean mafic-ultramafic (MUMF) rocks occur in the western Dharwar craton and range in size from small pods to schist belts. These MUMF pods consist mainly of meta-peridotites, tremolite-actinolite schists, serpentinites, amphibolites and metabasalts. Spinifex, nodular and ocelli textures are also present. The rocks have been subjected to greenschist and amphibolite facies metamorphism. Geochemical studies were undertaken to evaluate the possible occurrence of economically important elements in the mafic-ultramafic enclaves around the major Arsikere-Tavarkere lineament and surrounding gneissic terrain adjoining local shear zones that occur as discontinuous pods between Arsikere and Chennagiri. Talc-serpentine and tremolite- actinolite schists contain chromite which is rimmed by ferrit-chromite. A notable feature of these MUMF rocks is that they exhibit high MgO (22 - 40 per cent), total iron (8.34 - 10.01 per cent), Ni and Cr (~3000, 2800 ppm) contents, with some samples showing komatiitic affinity. The rare earth elements (REE) data show slightly fractionated patterns with enriched LREE (LREE/HREE ~5.0) and negative europium anomalies. The Pt and Pd values reach 6500 and 191 ppb. The MUMF rocks, especially those exhibiting high chromium contents and occurring near shear zones, are potential hosts for economic platinum group element (PGE) deposits.

For its Hellyer project, Aberfoyle sought to establish a high degree of confidence in all aspects of the feasibility study. Accurate capital and operating cost estimates were an integral and essential part of the study. They were crucial to the evaluation of investment returns and competitive cost position. Both the capital and operating cost estimates were based on the comprehensive data available from exploratory mine development, pilot plant operation, detailed engineering design, and Aberfoyle's experience in the area. One of the principal project objectives was to maximise operating productivity and efficiencies and this created capital cost alternatives which needed thorough cost-benefit assessment. The estimated capital cost for construction and development was $90 million, and the project was completed virtually on time for $80 million. The first year's experience indicated that operating costs would settle to well within 10% of the estimates.

The Bradford Process, Australian Patent No. 11253, has had considerable application in the treatment plants of Broken Hill mining companies, and is at present being used by the North Broken Hill Limited for the treatment of weathered slime accumulations.The "Mining and Scientific Press," of 28th September, 1918, describes the Bradford Process at Broken Hill, specially featuring its application to slime material at the Proprietary mine-the home of the process.The points then stressed for galena flotation were acidulated slime pulp (0.025 to 0.030% H2S04) at temperature 85° to 90° F. and suitable time contact, with 1.5 to 2 lb. of sodium hyposulphite (per ton on slime) to permit the released S02 to "wet" or depressthe blende mineral. Also 1.0 to 1.3 lb. of crude sulphur (per ton on slime) was burnt, to supply S02 for keeping the lead concentrate clean during flotation. Pulp density varied from 23 to 26% solids. Since 1918 the process has been simplified in its application.Acidity of circuit, temperature, and sodium hyposulphite have been dispensed with, and now the S02 is practically all obtained by burning crude sulphur. Despite the current downturn, coal remains an important commodity in the Australian economy. Increasing coal resource development has resulted in increasing competition for land use in coal mining regions across the country with communities and other stakeholders becoming more adept at articulating their concerns regarding this competition in a range of traditional and social forms of media. In this environment, obtaining and maintaining a social licence to operate (SLO) is problematic and has been identified as the fourth greatest risk facing the international mining industry.This research presents the findings from a longitudinal study on how Australian newspapers frame the views of coal mining stakeholders across each stage of the coal mining life cycle. News stories from national, state and regional newspapers in 2000, 2006 and 2013 were analysed.Over the study period, there have been significant changes in the coal mining themes being covered by Australian newspapers, the number of stories being published, the number of newspapers covering coal mining stories, and the diversity of stakeholders being quoted. How do the dominant themes in media communication change over time? How do these changes impact mining across the life-of-mine?The research confirmed that Australian journalists use framing, priming, labels and bias to conceptualise and understand the events that they report, and that this behaviour has a profound effect on public opinion.CITATION:Worden, S, Kirsch, A and Kirsch, P A, ?2014. In the past two and a half years, over 40 000 metalliferous mining and related services personnel have been trained through an Australian Generic Safety Induction system. This is almost half of AustraliaÆs metalliferous mining related workforce. This remarkable industry acceptance and delivery of safety courses is supported by Acacia Resources, Great Central Mines, Homestake, Newcrest Mining and WMC Resources, amongst hundreds of other mining, exploration and major contracting and services companies. MARCSTA; the Mining and Resources Contractors Safety Training Association (a pro-active not-for-profit self-help group of 24 major contracting companies) developed this generic safety induction. MARCSTA set out to find the æcommon groundÆ necessary to help address the evident safety problems and cost of re-training that were plaguing development of an internationally competitive and productive export industry. The incredible expansion of Australian mining during the decade fuelled a need for out-sourcing, resulting in much larger numbers of contractors on-site. At the same time, changes within Australian legislation, community expectations and the development of huge fly-in/fly-out operations and widespread skills shortages led to a rapid labour turnover and a higher paid workforce. Many Australian mining houses also ran international operations, particularly in South East Asia and head hunted people across the world. The skill levels fluctuated and fell at some local operations. Employers could no longer rely on systematic in-house training of permanent employees to improve safety and productivity as workers could and often did move on. Serious discrepancies in both quality and quantity of safety induction training and work practices occurred. Repetitive, boring and ineffective safety training became an embarrassing and costly burden for companies and workers alike. Then a spate of mining deaths sparked highly publicity, workforce concern and a demand for improvement from government, unions and corporate stakeholders. MARCSTA recognised it had to develop a high-quality safety-training program to satisfy the needs of all employers and be acceptable to others within the industry. This induction system had to be flexible enough to meet differences in legislation between states and industry sectors and be portable to enable cost and time savings for the new transient workforce. Changes in the last two years as a result of evaluating and incorporating various Taskforce inquiries into underground mining fatalities later led to the development of the MARCSTA Underground Safety Induction. This logical development added to the run away success of MARCSTAÆs General Safety Induction and was seen to be essential for many surface mines that were planning to develop underground operations. There are many lessons that MARCSTA learnt during its development that Pacific and South East Asian mining operations can benefit from. The most important of these are the support of stakeholders within industry and the recognition of higher safety and health expectations from workers and government. This goes hand-in-hand with the productivity and return on investment expectations of companies and their shareholders.

Australia has an enviable global reputation as a leader in health and safety outcomes in the hazardous industry of mining, in part due to an increased application of risk management regarding operational planning and mining practice. In 2010, the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) initiated a major project, RISKGATE, to build, capture and deliver a national body of knowledge to assist companies with the management of risk in coal mining. The online system contains information for tyres, collisions, fires, isolation, strata underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives underground, explosives open cut, manual tasks, slips/trips/falls, outbursts, coal bumps and bursts, human–machine interface, tailings dams, occupational hygiene and inrush. In 2014, RISKGATE is developing content for fitness for work (fatigue, drugs, alcohol, physical well-being, psychosocial well-being).This paper analyses underground mining fatalities in Australia and the United States since 2002 and introduces RISKGATE with a focus on the knowledge base for management of hazards in underground operations. Through capturing coal industry expert operational knowledge, RISKGATE provides a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover within the mining industry. Mine and ore beneficiation wastes and smelter contaminated soils often cause phytotoxicity and threaten adverse environmental effects if not remediated. Science has clarified both the risks from soil metals and methods to alleviate those risks that can be applied at low cost. Phytoremediation is a family of plant and agronomy based technologies to deal with environmental aspects of sites requiring remediation. If valid risk assessment indicates that metals comprise risk, phytostabilisation may be used to alleviate that risk for most contaminated sites. In particular, Zn-Pb, Cu and Ni mine and smelter sites are readily remediated by making the soil calcareous and fertile, with added organic and metal sorbent amendments that include soil microbes to ‘revitalise’ the soil. In each case, the soil fertility and causes of phytotoxicity should be clarified by agricultural soil extractions, and the combination of amendments required to improve fertility and reverse phytotoxicity identified and found locally. In contrast with phytostabilisation, phytoextraction/phytomining uses rare metal hyperaccumulator plants and agronomic management to maximise annual phytoextraction of soil elements into plant shoots for harvest, ashing and use as a metal ore. Plants that accumulate more than two per cent Ni in shoots, and yield 10–20 t ha-1 dry biomass yield 200–400 kg Ni ha-1, which has value greater than all common agricultural crops. Considering the value of elements, existence of hyperaccumulator plants and demonstrated agronomic management for Ni phytomining, it is clear that mine sites and Ni mineralised subore-grade serpentine soils can be phytomined economically as an agricultural mining technology. A team developed agronomic methods and improved cultivars of Alyssum, which can be profitably grown on temperate zone Ni mineralised or contaminated soils. Plant species for tropical ultramafic soil materials have been identified. The Eloise Cu-Au deposit is 60 km SE of Cloncurry in NW Queensland and has a current indicated reserve of 3.2 Mt @ 5.8 per cent Cu, 1.5gA Au and I9g/t Ag. It is hosted by metasediments and metabasic rocks that underwent amphibolite facies metamorphism at 550-600¦C and less than 3.5 kb. Peak metamorphism coincided with the regional D2 event which produced an S2 foliation with north-south strike and variable sub-vertical to steep east or west dip. The deposit is associated with several major shear zones parallel to the S2 foliation. The lodes form part of a large alteration system that is localised by the retrograde shear zones. Homblende-biotite-quartz with minor sulphides occur early in the alteration paragenesis which is overprinted by chlorite-muscovite-pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite ¦calcite+¦nagnetite. The later assemblage replaces the earlier Fe-K alteration as well as Fe-rich metamorphic assemblages such as homblende, biotite and staurolite indicating a post peak metamorphism timing for ore formation. Although replacive textures are the most common, the alteration can display open space infill and brecciation as well as durchbewegung and mylonite textures indicating that mineralisation occurred during ongoing ductile deformation. All these features are crosscut by a later brittle phase of calcite-chlorite-quartz¦pyrite alteration.

The occurrence of lollingite (FeAs2 ) in the Broken Hill lode is recorded by an analysis of lollingite published in the Annual Report of the Department of Mines, New South Wales, for the year 1934 (p. 69). The analysed specimen came from the North Broken Hill mine, and material from the same occurrence (Specimeh No. 1), as well as two specimens (Nos. 3 and 4) from the Zinc Corporation mine, have been forwarded· to us by Mr. M. Mawby of the Zinc Corporation Mine. This material has been supplemented by another specimen (No. 2) from the Zinc Corporation mine, passed over to us by Dr. I. Wark.The original analysis of lollingite is quoted in Table I, and shows that the Broken Hill lollingite contains appreciable amounts of cobalt and nickel, and, indicates that the iron is to a considerable extent replaced by cobalt and nickel, so that its formula should be written (FeCoNi) As2This is supported by a microscopical examination of a polished surface of the lollingite, in which no individual arsenides of cobalt and nickel can be detected.Coarse grained galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite are attached to our specimen of lollingite from the North mine, and are separated by a sharp junction from a mass of lollingite associated with some arsenopyrite and garnet. The massive lollingite can be distinguished from arsenopyrite in the hand specimen by a much brighter, silvery lustre, against which arsenopyrite appears a dull silver grey; but the passage from lollingite to arsenopyrite appears transitional.

It is indeed a privilege and honour to deliver the keynote address at this 15th APCOM symposium. APCOM has played a significant role in my own career and I am sure in the careers of many of the thousands of other participants over the years since its inception as a short course on "Computers and Computer Applications in the Mineral Industry" at the University of Arizona in 1961. The technical papers and addresses presented at the 14 past symposia provide an imposing record of sustained pro- gress and achievement in the field of computer applications. I will not attempt to analyse this technical side of APCOM but rather endeavour to provide you with a broad popular perspective of the road travelled to date and that lying ahead of us. The name of the series of symposia has changed from time to time, with titles such as Mathematical and Statistical Techniques, Mining and Exploration, and Decision Making being used at various times until in 1972 the name APCOM was coined and the present loga designed by the South African organising committee for the 10th symposium. It can conveniently be accepted as standing for:

The relationship between the maceral composition of coal and the strength of the coke produced from that coal has received a great deal of attention in recent years.Studies using two Bulli Seam coals, and blends of Bulli and Wongawilli Seam coals, from the IIIawarra Measures of the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales were carried out.The optimum range of vitrinite was found to lie between 45 per cent and 60 per cent (mineral matter free).Above and below this vitrinite range coke strength deteriorated. Coke strength indices increased with rank, and the optimum vitrinite content increased with an increase in rank. These changes require confirmation as trends by testing a third level of rank. It was noted that vitrinite content decreased with an increase in the specific gravity of separation of the coal.Use of petrographic analyses will increase confidence in choosing coals for coking, provided the coals are well known. Such analyses offer the possibility of greater flexibility in coal purchases and the possibility of producing a marketable blend from coals, which have limited market potential. Critical base coals for blends can be conserved.Significantly more work is required before coal reserves can be utilized to optimum advantage. This work would require extension of the studies discussed in this paper and, in particular, the testing of a wider range of rank.

Three decades ago mining companies, principally in North America, aided by machine and explosive manufacturers, started significant attempts to develop and implement automated mining systems, mainly underground. These tended to be motivated by decreasing cost, increasing productivity, reducing labour requirements, and improving safety. These are important business drivers, however, little attention was given to the underlying goal of mining automation, namely to bring upstream processes in control and reducing variation, as seen in downstream mineral processing plants.This paper first reviews the nature of Lean Thinking and its application in the context of the growing commitments by industry to develop future automated mine production systems. The paper then makes reference to prior and current experiences in open pit blasthole drill and shovel performance monitoring, to demonstrate the principle that machine performance data offers as a means, not only to characterise the dynamic geological and working environment, but also to provide a foundation for automation. In this case, drill and shovel monitoring was originally motivated as a means to optimise blast fragmentation through more effective drill and blast designs that are based on an accurate determination of the bench geological and geotechnical characteristics, hence managing variation in the drilling and blasting process. This paper considers how automating and integrating such components of the mine production system would bring processes into a controlled state, creating value at the face, within a framework of Lean mining.

Improving Pelletisation of Pyrite Cinder by High Pressure Roller Grinding As an important secondary resource for ironmaking, pyrite cinder is characterised by coarse particle size, low specific surface area, high porosity and poor surface activity, which leads to high bentonite dosage, low strength and too high moisture of green balls and high roasting temperature. In this paper, a study of improving the pelletisation of pyrite cinder containing feed by using high pressure roll grinding (HPRG) was presented, which aimed to improve the quality of green pellets and reinforce roasting performance pellets. It is shown that pyrite cinder is characterised by complicated mineral compositions dominated by haematite and metal sulfides, porous surface and middle class ballability, leading to higher balling moisture, higher bentonite dosage and higher firing temperature for pellet hardening. The pelletisation of pyrite cinder can be improved by high pressure roller grinding and blending with magnetite in the pellet feed. The former is probably ascribed to the increase in specific surface areas of pellet feed from 850 cm2+g to 1690 cm2+g when the pellet feed passes through roller twice. Good quality green balls and fired pellets can be made from feed comprising 40 - 60 per cent pyrite cinder and 60 - 40 per cent magnetite concentrate at small scale under the following conditions: 1.2 per cent bentonite, feed passing through roller twice at 7 per cent moisture at 1.5 ton pressure, balling at 13 per cent moisture for 13 min, preheating at 1050¦C for 12 min and firing at 1300¦C for 8 min. Green balls possess such properties as drop numbers of 6.5 times, compressive strength of 19.1 Newton and thermal shock temperature of 533¦C. Fired pellets are imparted high compressive strength of over 3000 Newton per pellet. Small scale tests have been proven by pilot scale tests that high grade fired pellets are made, assaying 63 per cent Fe and minor other impurities, such as sulfur and phosphorus except for copper content. The fired pellets made of three blends possess excellent metallurgical performance, such as reducibility index higher than 65 per cent, reduction swelling index lower than 15 per cent and low temperature reduction degradation lower than2 per cent. Especially the compressive strength after reduction is higher 719Newton per pellet.

Since the publications of Gy’s initial work, many authors have discussed the approaches to estimate the variance of the fundamental sampling error (FSE). Experimental tests suggested by Pitard and François-Bongarçon determine the sampling parameters K and a to calibrate Gy’s formula. The heterogeneity test and the sample tree method are well known and broadly used for many commodities. However, prior to the analysis, the collection of a representative sample is an intriguingly difficult task. The composite for the heterogeneity tests often consists of run-?of-?mine material or processed ore on a conveyor belt. In most cases the final sample does not have enough mass, mixes different geological units, represents a rare blend and does not characterise the deposit. In order to obtain a reliable composite for trace elements and low-grade ores, sampling practitioners suggest at least half a ton of material.To prevent the common representative pitfalls in the FSE, this case study focuses on a single gold-?bearing geological unit collected in situ. With this unit being structured by the mine geologists, but with the interaction between engineers and chemists, it was possible to validate the reconciliation suggested by Pitard (2015). The heterogeneity test and the sample tree method were performed using 500 kg of a smoky quartz from a single geological domain and the results were compared to Gy’s formula. The logging practice by the geologists was modified, emphasising the definition of the size of the gold nugget or its cluster, number of grains and association. Finally, a mineralogical study was conducted on the geological unit to define the liberation factor. The minerals industry in Australia is currently regarded as the country's economic saviour; the bastion of economic security. As Fitzgerald (1974) stated, 'Australia's natural endowments in minerals are the envy of most countries of the world'. As a result the proposed new mineral developments are on a scale that hitherto in the sixties would have been completely un-envisaged. It is reported that Australia is poised on the verge of a 16 billion dollar mining-based investment boom: a boom that will see Australia dominate the energy export field, the mineral processing field, and create the 'coal dollar'. This growth scenario has many inherent dangers, and it is the authors' contention that these should be carefully considered before further development proceeds. Two of the major problems related to the mineral industry growth scenario are the predictability of the future metal market, and the energy cost of mining. The latter problem is the one discussed here. The mining-mineral processing industries in Australia currently use about 36 per cent of Australia's primary energy budget. This large energy input is dominated by two major industries, iron and steel and the rapidly developing a1uminium industry. These two combined use over 20 per cent of the total Australian energy budget. In an industry which is export oriented about 96 per cent as expressed in ex-mine value terms û much of the energy input is exported along with the product. The authors therefore urge that serious consideration by the mineral industry be given to the relatively high energy intensiveness of process operations, especially in respect of the aluminium industry.
