Power supply for remote mining developments is compared with supply to the general public with the conclusion that the private power plant operator has many opportunities to minimise his costs which are not open to public utilities. The main features of diesel, gas turbine and steam power plant and the limitation upon their application which may be imposed by the fuels available and the local conditions at remote sites are outlined. Reference is made to the value of joint examination by the mining engineer, metallurgist and power engineer to decide how to make best overall use of capital, labour and energy in co-ordinating the design of power and process plant and in setting no more than adequate standards of reliability and efficiency. Fluctuations in world markets make it difficult to plan mining operations to a firm time base. Suggestions are made to minimise the financial risk in forward expenditure upon power plant which in large sizes due to longer construction time may have to be ordered before a final decision is taken upon the mining development it is to serve.

This paper describes the mining methods and strategy used to extract the 5 Orebody crown pillar at the Isa Lead Mine over the past five years. The bulk of the crown pillar was extracted by the use of sublevel open stope method. An uphole bench stope was mined to scavenge the remaining ore. Geomechanical issues associated with the crown pillar extraction are described. Stope sizes were gradually increased on a stope by stope basis. This has allowed the maximising of ore recovery while relevant risks were managed. The principles in designing ore rib pillars against various types of fill materials are also described.

This paper presents a method for estimating the strength and stability of model coal pillars with bedding planes (weakness planes) inclination. The strength of coal relative to the angular difference between the principal stress direction and bedding planes is considered. The failure behaviour of model coal pillars containing weakness plane inclination by using servo-control Schenck Machine are shown. Uniaxial and triaxial compressive strength of coal specimens are investigated, and test results indicated that the strength of coal pillars depends on the weakness planes inclination with respect to the principal stress direction. However, it is shown that with increasing confining pressure, the effect of weakness planes inclination on the strength of the coal specimens is reduced. An empirical method is given for prediction the compressive strength of coal containing weakness planes inclination. The results of this method are compared with the experimental results and Jaeger theory. Finally, three well-known empirical strength criteria were tested against the triaxial test data for coal containing weakness planes inclination.

In preparation of this Paper, the emphasis has been laid on the commercial rather than on the technical and scientific aspects of coal evaluation. It is intended to describe and comment on the principal factors which currently determine the selection and procurement of coking coal for the steel industry, and is not based on the results of any original research by the author. Evaluation of different coals for strictly thermal uses, for gas production or other chemical applications has not been attempted, and comparisons of coal with other fuels have been excluded: the paper is concerned only with coals for the production of blast furnace coke. The discussion is strongly related to, and illustrated by, British, and to some extent, other Western European practice, but it is hoped that the general conclusions may have a wider application.

Recent operating experience from West Australian open pit gold mines has shown that geotechnical input into initial design is rare. As a result, ground stability is poor - almost half the pits designed in this way suffer major failure.West Australian experience shows that geotechnical studies for individual mines are site specific, and therefore empirical experience cannot be transported from site to site. Geotechnical studies performed prior to design have resulted in significantly improved pit stability.

A research program was conducted to determine the relationship between operating conditions and medium losses in Mt Newman Mining's Beneficiation Plant. It was found that major medium losses were adherence losses and losses fran the overflow from the water recovery cyclones. Operating density and medium blend were found to have a significant effect on the medium consumption. Viscosity was thought to be the underlying factor. This viscosity problem was overcame by adding dilution water to the cyclone spigot discharge to reduce viscosity. The thermodynamically-based pyrometallurgical simulation software STEPSOL (Version 3.0) provides for the modelling of activities using the Interaction Parameter Model, the Regular Solution Model, the Sub-Regular Three Suffix Margules Model, the Sub-Regular Four Suffix Margules Model and various simpler polynomial models. These are briefly reviewed, along with the major sources of data available in the literature, and the implementation of the models in the program.

In recent years great efforts have been made in the optimisation of ball mill operation. This paper describes a methodology developed for modelling and optimising the steady-state grinding process. Thirteen basic similarity numbers of the process are derived. Based on these similarity numbers, we build a group of mathematical models which give a full description of the relation between dependent and independent variables. The parameter estimation and multi-objective optimisation of the grinding process have been done using these models, and validated with experiments in a continuous laboratory-scale ball mill.

This paper discusses the application of optimisation technology to strategic planning with an emphasis on project evaluation with examples on the application of LOBOS to a variety of recent projects.

The Regional Development Council has initiated a project that aims to find better ways for further investment by extractive industry companies in sustainable regional and community futures. It will be undertaken through collaborative actions that bring together the resources of private and public sector stakeholders in regional Western Australia.   The broad objectives of the project are to: describe and analyse the current situation with respect to the impediments to regional communities being more self sustaining, assess the effectiveness of the current and possible future levels of investment by extractive industry companies in the sustainable development of communities in regional Western Australia, identify and demonstrate collaborative ways in which extractive industry companies in Australia and other countries can play an enhanced role in sustainable regional and community sustainability through strategic engagement and investment; and confirm the effectiveness of the collaborative measures in delivering sustainable outcomes for regional communities by way of attracting and retaining populations and enterprises in Australia and similar environments.

Qualitative measurement of respirable dust in metal mines is limited and an example of this is demonstrated at Northparkes Mine, where operational experience was sought for measuring dust standards and identifying exposure limits. However, relying on operational experience has limited value due to variation in observations from person to person and is based on visible dust (which is larger in size than respirable dust). However, with sophisticated dust measuring equipment, like the real-time aerosol monitor, dust concentrations can be accurately measured and recorded concisely. Research conducted as part of a collaborative agreement on behalf of Northparkes to launch an occupational dust monitoring program was implemented on the mine site. To form the basis of this research, it was hypothesised that no proper dust measuring testing at the mine site had been adequately identified. In addition, existing occupational hygiene monitoring programs did not adequately quantify employee exposures to these hazards. This project will outline the results of an occupational dust monitoring program, hence greatly improving the capacity to quantify the health risks posed to employees.

A mathematical model for spontaneous combustion of coal with moisture included is presented in this paper. The one-dimensional unsteady state model consists of conservation equations for oxygen, water vapour and inherent moisture of coal and energy for both gaseous and solid phases. A first order Arrhenius reaction rate for oxidation under both pore diffusion and chemically controlled reaction regime is considered. The rate of evaporation or condensation is also considered as a function of temperature of coal, water content of coal and gas streams. The equation of the model is solved numerically by the finite difference technique. Influences of different parameters on the process of spontaneous combustion can be examined by using this model. Also the model can be used to simulate full-scale storage conditions.

Project Hobson involves the replacement of an existing 90-year-old above-ground sewer that crosses Hobson Bay in Auckland, New Zealand, and which is nearing the end of its economic life, with a 3 km long, 3.7 m internal diameter segmentally-lined bored tunnel. The $118 M project will offer several benefits to the owner, Watercare Services Ltd, and the local community:provide capacity to meet projected growth in the region,virtually eliminate wastewater overflows into Hobson Bay and the Waitemata Harbour, andremove an obtrusive visual feature and open up the bay for recreational purposes. The geology in the region is a sedimentary formation, which has been significantly influenced by volcanic activity; 49 volcanoes are present within 20 km of the nearby city centre. The geology along the alignment is dominated by two palaeovalleys which have been infilled with a combination of marine alluvium and volcanic deposits. Watercare Services Limited has elected to manage and share tunnelling risk through, among other key measures, the implementation of a geotechnical baseline report (GBR); one of the first uses of this type of document in Australasia. This paper describes the general principles behind the use of a GBR, the development of the GBR used in Project Hobson and some lessons learnt.

Deposits of manganese oxides and silicates in the Tamworth area were re-examined. The major deposit at Danglemah consists chiefly of rhodonite and the rare silicate tephroite. It is considered that the manganese was deposited with the original sediments, the silicates being formed later during the intense folding and low-grade metamorphism of the enclosing rocks.INTRODUCTIONMany small deposits of manganese oxides and silicates occur along a belt of eastern New South Wales and Queensland.Some fifty occurrences, most of which have been subject to mining activity, were described by Lloyd (1943) and some of this information was summarized by Knight (1947). The ores have been mined on a small scale since 1884. Small supplies of battery grade ore were won from a number of deposits, while larger quantities of metallurgical grade were sold to the steel industry. Maximum production was in 1918, when 6,500 tons were mined.The siliceous nature of many of the ores and their occurrence in the neighbourhood of granite batholiths led earlier investigators to consider the deposits to be of hydrothermal origin, associated with the granite intrusions. The present work questions this viewpoint.In this investigation, three of the chief deposits in the Tamworth area were seen. These were at Danglemah, which is being mined at present, and Mount Jasper and Manganese Mountain, which were mined in the past. The following is a brief summary of the Bulli Colliery and its method of operation when Australian Iron and Steel Ltd. took control.Bulli Colliery is situated about a mile west of the village of Bulli and is some 10 mUes north of the Australian Iron and Steel Company's Steelworks at Port Kembla.The mine is owned by Australian Iron and Steel Limited, who purchased it in 1936 from the liquidators of Bulli Colliery and Coke Works.It is one of the oldest working coal mines in Australia, having been opened about 1858 and has worked more or less continuously since that date.The seam worked is the No. 1, or Bulli, Seam, which outcrops along the escarpment of the Illawarra Range and is generally operated by tunnels, the portal at Bulli being some 440ft. above sea level.The colliery holding is fairly extensive, but the coal seam over a large portion of the area within two miles of the outcrop has been more or less destroyed by an intrusion of basalt.At present there is no coal being worked within a distance of about 21 miles from the surface, the farthest workings being about four miles from the tunnel mouth.The existing main haulage road, for the first two miles from the portal, is not straight; it is very narrow over fairly long stretches and has many changes of grade varying from 3% in favour of the load to 13% against the load.The dumping station and screens are situated close to the portal of the haulage tunnel, and at this point the coal is loaded into railway hopper waggons, which are then hauled by rope to the top of a self-acting incline. The waggons are lowered down the incline, a distance of approximately! mile, the ruling grade being about 18 %.From the bottom of the incline, waggons are hauled by Company's steam locomotive to exchange sidings from whence they are taken by New South Wales Government Railway engine to the Company's Steelworks at Port Kembla.

Purification of GAsgruvan Limestone is carried out by anionic, cationic and cationic followed by anionic flotations in order to obtain a calcite concentrate that is acceptable to the paper industry. The results indicate that such a concentrate could be achieved by first carrying out the separation of siliceous gangue minerals by cationic flotation followed by the separation of carbonate during the anionic flotation. Stearylamine acetate (Flotigam SA) and a modified fatty acid (OMC 357) are found to be selective during cationic and anionic flotation, respectively. A final product containing 99.25 per cent calcite with a recovery of around 80 per cent is obtained. It is hoped that these results could be further improved by the follow-up process variable studies, in particular, the effect of reagent dosages and conditioning time at each stage of cationic and anionic flotation steps.
