The Anglo American phosphate mine is located in the Brazilian state of Goiás and possesses one of Brazil’s most important phosphate rock deposits, with the site being the country’s second largest producer of phosphate rock concentrate. Despite the site having been in operation since 1979, the mining team only started using explosives in 2004 when rocks with greater hardness started to appear in the mine’s geological profile. Rock excavation was previously performed mechanically. Until 2013, only rocks with high hardness were blasted, this following the standard drilling grid that was defined in 2004 without any changes in the blast parameters. The aim of this paper is to show how fragmentation optimisation has yielded positive results at all stages of the production chain, from the mine to the mill passing through an impact hammer crusher, a rod mill and ball mill, operating in close circuit with hydrocyclones.While incorporating the mine to mill holistic approach during the operational integration, the focus was on defining the blasting domains and respective optimal fragmentation and measuring the benefits of blasting in terms of reduction in energy and grinding media consumed in the comminution processes. In the first stage, the blasting team made changes to the blasting parameters and assessed the effects of these changes on fragmentation using computer software and on-site measurements. This generated a database that made it possible to divide the mine into blasting domains. For the second stage, teams from the plant, geology, mine planning and operation departments jointly made comparisons between the performance when processing stockpiles, which only included high hardness blasted ore (20–30 per cent of blasted ore). Changing the drilling grid’s size from 3.0 m × 3.8 m to 2.0 m × 2.6 m for high hardness rock with the presence of silicates resulted in a 40 per cent reduction in the P80 for the blasted material (from 459 to 278 mm), while changing the grid from 3.0 m × 3.8 m to 2.6 m × 3.2 m for high hardness rock without the presence of silicates generated a reduction of 25 per cent (from 270 to 204 mm). There were gains observed from the measurements at the mineral processing plant in terms of specific energy spent on comminution and on the consumption of grinding bodies in the rod mill. The countercurrent gas-solid heat transfer during the drying of brown coal briquettes in the pilot carbonization plant at Morwell has been analysed and theoretical gas and solid temperature distributions through the drier have been calculated. Although the calculations rest on several simplifying assumptions, the theoretical temperature distributions compare well with those observed in practical operation. Valuable conclusions are reached as to the effects of changes in drier operating conditions on the rate of drying of the briquettes which controls the strength of the char produced. The analysis shows why a limitation was reached in the improvement of char strength in the pilot plant in 1961 due to the performance of the drier and a prediction is made of a way in which the limitation could be overcome.

To explain in any depth the industrial relations of Broken Hill I believe that it is necessary to trace some of the many happenings that created the present industrial climate. While appreciating that our relations with the local industry are relatively good, it must be pointed out that to preserve and improve this present situation a duty is owed to everyone connected with the industry (workers, share- holders, etc.) by management and unions to see that just and reasonable agreements are found for any disputes. If the companies ever take the local position for granted it would soon die, killed by someone who may get some short term benefit, but who would lose something of incalculable worth in the long run. People in economically developed societies demonstrate inherent human care for Earth and want to stop pollution. Yet efforts to clean Earth seem bogged in confusion from wildly contradictory and alarmist predictions of æclimate crisisÆ. Supposed experts openly disagree yet weÆre told thereÆs universal agreement humans are causing æthe end of life as we know itÆ. The turmoil combines with peopleÆs feelings of fear, guilt, anger, hopelessness and even resignation and apathy to trigger æclimate alarmÆ. The paper enables people to rediscover clarity, hope and support for Earth by understanding how climate alarm and confusion were created and how they actually increase pollution. Many people seem to think global warming is as serious as pollution and worry that questioning alarm will enable pollution. Yet theyÆre different. We need be even more concerned about climate alarm because history shows repeatedly that when buried by ignorance and panic real problems grow overwhelming. Environmental credibility is endangered by confused politicians and sensationalist media. When weÆre willing to re-evaluate what weÆve been told we replace fear and confusion with facts and freedom to identify opportunities. Combining this with practical understanding of human behaviour and leadership enables opportunities to be identified and action taken. The paper shows how confident, informed leadership leads and supports higher productivity and effective care for the natural environment.

Ore-bearing intrusions in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) were examined from nine mines: Boshekul, Nurkazgan, Kounrad, Borly, Aktogai, Koksai, Baogutu, Tuwu and Erdenet. The intrusions are diorite, granodiorite and tonalite with SiO2 contents ranging from 58 to 75 wt per cent, and show mildly fractionated rare earth elements (REE) ([LREE]N/[HREE]N = 2.7–4.7) – light REE and heavy REE – and varying Eu anomalies ([Eu]/[Eu]* = 0.58–1.4). The ratios of Sr/Y vary from 7.9 to 115 and the contents of Y from 4.6 to 23.9 ppm. The parental magmas of the intrusions are intrinsically oxidised. Zircon grains in the ore-bearing rocks from large- and intermediate-sized porphyry Cu deposits show high Ce4+/Ce3+ ratios characterised by 65–422 at Boshekul (>4.1 Mt Cu), 76–480 at Kounrad (>4.8 Mt Cu), 90–280 at Aktogai (>12 Mt Cu), 80–250 at Erdenet (>11 Mt Cu) 74–370 at Nurkazgan (>3.9 Mt Cu), 100–210 at Koksai (>1.6 Mt Cu), and 71–340 at Tuwu (~2.0 Mt Cu). In two small deposits, the ore-bearing rocks display low values of Ce4+/Ce3+; Borly (0.6 Mt Cu) ranging from 28 to 158, and Baogutu (0.6 Mt Cu) from 29 to 113. The Ce4+/Ce3+ ratio of 120 distinguishes large intermediate-size deposits from small-size deposits. The Kulumadau deposit represents an intermediate-sulfidation epithermal gold deposit (3.8 Mt at 2.3 g/t, Ag:Au = 1). Mineralisation is primarily confined to hydrothermal breccias within pre-existing fault zones, where it is disseminated throughout a hydrothermal matrix comprising chlorite-quartz-adularia-illite-I/S clays-calcite-pyrite. The host sequence represents numerous mid-Miocene pyroclastic flow eruptions within a tectonically active emergent shallow marine to subaerial depositional setting. Subsequent growth faulting was responsible for debris avalanches, which were subsequently cut by reverse faults. Faults were exploited by hydrothermal fluids, with the heightened porosity at the juncture between faults and debris material facilitating boiling of the ore constituents. Fluid inclusion studies suggest that fluid mixing between meteoric fluids and magmatic fluids, accompanied by boiling, were the primary mechanisms for gold deposition. In the minerals industry allocating capital for setting up a new project or for upgrading an existing facility usually requires that a compromise be found between the initial cost of equipment, its operating performance and on-going operating costs. To maximise the return on the investment usually requires that various possible combinations and layouts of equipment be assessed. This task is both difficult and time consuming. Computer simulation can be used as a means of determining the expected operating performance of a range of alternate equipment configurations. Simulation is a particularly important technique for analysis as it is one of the few approaches that allows the analyst to take into account the variability inherent in a mining process. While computer simulation is a well established technique its use, until recent years, has been limited to large organisations with access to substantial computing facilities. However, with the current availability of low cost computing platforms combined with easily understood animated displays, simulation is now becoming more widely used across the industry.

Interpreting the behaviour of granular material and simulating the gravity flow are complex processes in cave mining methods. In this paper, a new Cellular Automata based code – FlowSim – is used as a flexible tool to simulate the gravity flow and subsidence zone in block caving mines. The simulation results of the gravity flow model in a real scaled mine as well as a scaled physical model are presented in this study. In this research, FlowSim was first calibrated at a mine, based on the information obtained from smart markers. These markers were located in five points of the second block of the Esmeralda sector, at the El Teniente copper mine, Codelco, Chile. The calibration was performed with the objective of reducing the discrepancy between the extraction zone defined by markers in the mine and FlowSim outputs. Regarding the mine data, FlowSim was calibrated with the minimum error of ten per cent between real and simulated results. Then, the calibrated FlowSim model was used to simulate the flow behaviour of a scaled physical model. This model was constructed in the Block Caving Laboratory of the University of Chile to scale down the same block of the Esmeralda sector with the scale of 1:200. The FlowSim outputs show that this software enables the simulation of the gravity flow of the scaled model with less than five per cent discrepancy in grade and dilution entry to the drawpoints. According to the obtained results, this paper recommends FlowSim as an appropriate tool which can improve the design of production level in block caving and can enhance the prediction of the subsidence zone and dilution entry.CITATION:Castro, R, Hekmat, A, Fuentes, M, Armijo, F and Rodriguez, F, 2016. The Morning Star diorite dyke has been subjected to two periods of mineralization. The earlier, genetically related to the dyke magma, gave rise to a weak chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-pentlandite-gold mineralization in a narrow zone, up to 25 cm. wide, which parallelsthe nearby western (hanging) wall of the dyke. Subsequently a set of conjugate shears formed in the dyke as a result of tectonic movements. Gold-quartz veins formed in these shears giving rise to the classical "ladder veins" of the Morning Star mine. On either side of the veins ("floors") the diorite has been bleached for up to 3 ft. This involved introduction of much CO. and some K"O, and S with abstraction of SiO. and FeO, giving rise to carbonates, sericite, zoisite and pyrite. The veins consist of quartz with minor amounts of albite and carbonate, together with pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, galena, bournonite, boulangerite and gold. Spectrographic analyses of gold show that the suite of trace elements is consistent throughout the mine.INTRODUCTIONThe gold-quartz veins of the Morning Star Gold Mine, at Wood's Point, Victoria, are a classic example of the "ladder vein" type of deposit. The structure of this series of repeating quartz veins or "floors", some barren and some productive, occurring in a set of conjugate shears which transect a "dyke bulge" of diorite (Fig. 1), has been described on numerous occasions as mining has progressed and figures in the textbooks (Whitelaw, 1905; 1916; Junner, 1920; Lindgren, 1933; McKinstry, 1935; 1942; 1949; Kenny, 1949; Hills, 1952; Clappison, 1953) ; but there has been no study of the mineralization apart from that in Junner's (1920) general study of the Walhalla-Wood's Point Goldfield, made at a time when mining had not developed below the 400 ft. level,. and the mine was dormant.

As the title indicates the central themes discussed in this contribution are sustainable development, information systems, and extractive industry. More specifically, the objective is to present a prototype for the systematic generation of extractive industry (henceforth: EI) û specific sustainability information. The paper begins with the authorÆs viewpoints on the core notions of sustainability, and development, as well as their relationship to information. These set the stage for the introduction of the information system (IS), as well as the follow-up sustainability information system (SIS) extractive industry sustainability information system (EISIS) concepts and related discussions. The paper continues with a second part, in which, efforts to research and develop an EISIS prototype are described. First, the team is presented. Second, the systemÆs aim and target groups are briefly discussed. After, an articulated overarching EISIS conceptual model emphasising capital accumulation, and service flow concepts û is presented. This is followed by a detailed description of the assembled prototype with a focus on data and information generation. The formulation of data generation, storage and transmission processes, as well as its use in sustainability interpretation rules and their embedment in the conceptual model is made with respect to monetised stock and flow parameters, measured in the appropriate dimensions. In the third part, the author presents and discusses the results of a first round of prototype experimental development in three major EI firms. First, the system observation, and data analysis protocols are described. Second, a review of protocol implementation, and respective results, is made. Finally, the overall performance of the proposed prototype, and development process issues are discussed, before suggesting areas for improvement and future research. The paper ends with a conclusion in which the author provides a retrospective balance of the æknowledge creation projectÆ, as well as a prospective outlook for research in this field; before acknowledgements are made and references provided.

A description is given of preliminary work done to identify the problems inherent in electrochemical oxidation of metal sulphides, and particularly in the use of powder compacts as anodes in electrolysis. Lead flotation concentrate pressed into a compact can serve as an anode for direct electrowinning of lead according to the reaction PbS -7 Pb2+ +So +2e. No pYrometallurgical step is required, and sulphur is recovered in elemental form.In the experimental work, electrical conductivity of the compacts was achieved by addition of 5·5 per cent of graphite. After compaction at 10-20 tons/sq. in. the anodes were strong and remained intact throughout the electro-oxidation period. Perchlorate electrolyte was used, but fluosilicate electrolyte is also applicable. A sheet of pure lead formed the starting cathode.As anode potential increased above 1·0 V (v. SHE) PbS04 was formed in increasing amount. At 0·90 V, Pb2+ extraction efficiency was 85 per cent. Anode potential was kept low by electrolysing at 60°C and 15 mA/sq. cm., and by improving the porosity of the compact. Other metal sulphides (Zn, Fe, Cu) in the flotation concentrate also oxidize and release metal ions to the electrolyte, which would need to be purified prior to deposition of lead.Power requirement in a laboratory cell was about 0·24 kWh per lb of lead extracted.

The nickel deposits within the Honeymoon Well project area (26¦ 40'S, 120¦ 25'E), located 45 km south of Wiluna, occur in the northern part of the Agnew-Wiluna belt (Figure 1; Hill et at, 1990). The project area is covered by up to 50 m of transported material which greatly hampers both exploration and an understanding of the bedrock geology. Since 1990 intensive exploration has increased the resource from 10 Mt at one per cent Ni to 134 Mt at 0.76 per cent Ni in five deposits (0.4 per cent Ni cut-off, resources above 300 m depth, December 1994). This includes a massive sulphide resource of 2.5 Mt at 3.4 per cent Ni.

A.) : In congratulating Mr. Hooker upon his resume of Mr Parry's paper I have in mind the fact that he carried out the research into pipe pressures. Hydraulic filling as practised in Kalgoorlie has created world wide interest, with these pressures and percolation being vital points.Early in the 1950s, representatives of the Kolar field were conduGted over the local mines where stopes at depths below 2,000 ft were being filled. The problems of pipe pressures were their main consideration since depths of up to 10,000 ft were envisaged.Mr Krishnaiah and Mr Murthy from the same field are with us today and perhaps we may hear of their experiences with depths of 6,000 ft and long lateral lines.J. The Myra Falls minesite, of Westmin Resources Limited, is located at the geographic centre of Vancouver Island, within the confines of Strathcona Provincial Park. The operation includes two active underground mines, II-W and Lynx, together with a modem 3650 1/d milling facility. Recent exploration successes will lead to the commissioning of a third mining area in late-1993 - The Battle/Gap Mine. These ore deposits are complexly metal-zoned volcanogenic massive sulphides of Devonian age, hosted in the Myra Formation of the Sicker Group volcanic assemblage. Three distinct felsic volcanic units are defined within the 450 metre thick Myra Formation. They are, from oldest to youngest, the H-W Horizon, the LMP Horizon and the Upper Rhyolite Unit. Massive sulphide mineralisation occurs throughout the property in the H-W and LMP Horizons. There are a number of orebody types, including polymetallic massive sulphides, polymetallic disseminated sulphides, zoned pyritic massive sulphides, elastic sulphide zones and stringer sulphide zones. Individual orebodies range in size from 10 000 tonne zinc-rich polymetallic lenses to the ten million tonne, zoned massive sulphide H-W main lens. The property has been in continuous operation for 26 years, producing over 13 Mt of ore averaging 2.2 g/t Au, 64.0 g/t Ag, 1.9 per cent Cu, 0.6 per cent Pb, and 5.6 per cent Zn. Current geological reserves stand at 12.5 Mt at a comparable grade, including 4 Mt of recently discovered high grade ore in the Battle and Gap Zones. Mining and milling methods have evolved over time to enable successful extraction and milling of these complex ores. Change is on-going with the recent conversion of the H-W Mine to large-scale bulk mining methods, and the development of effective computerised ore reserve calculation and mine planning tools. These changes, in concert with successful exploration techniques that led to recent high grade ore discoveries, have breathed new life into the operation and should assure its present and future viability.

This paper introduces the most commonly used molybdenum flotation flowsheet, together with the introduction of the flotation chemistry. Many different types of flotation cells are used in modern moly plants, and each type of flotation cell has its own unique advantages suited for particular ore and process conditions. Dust suppression is an important environmental control in most mining operations. The poorest quality water within a mine site is often used for dust suppression since it provides an effective means of reducing the volume of poor quality water. The ultimate fate of contaminants or salinity associated with water used in dust suppression is important to consider for optimising water management and assessing the environmental impact and life span and maintenance requirements of roads associated with dust suppression.The propensity for remobilisation of contaminants or salts depends on a range of factors such as the application rate, climate, road construction, water chemistry and soil geochemistry. This paper describes a typical study approach which could be used to assess the short- and long-term impacts of mine water application for dust suppression. The steps of the study are: reviewing the environmental setting, estimating water requirements for dust suppression, reviewing source water chemistry, developing a mass balance model and assessing the mobility and fate of contaminants with a geochemical model.This approach identifies which salt species are likely to form and whether they are prone to remobilisation. It is possible to quantitatively assess the risk of exporting contaminants or salt from roads and to refine the dust suppression strategy to minimise the environmental risk. æMining + Health in DevelopmentÆ is a project funded by the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC, 2012) to develop a centralised database of corporate sustainability initiatives for managing and improving occupational and public health, based on information extracted from social and environmental reports of major mining, oil and gas (MOG) companies. This register of materials has the potential to increase stakeholder awareness of the unique health risks impacting the minerals industry, employees, their families and surrounding communities, as well as to inform stakeholders on global industry approaches to health management.Data and preliminary outcomes from analysis of different MOG corporate sustainability reports on public health and disease management are presented for six African countries (Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Mozambique, Sudan, Tanzania and Zimbabwe) and six Asia-Pacific countries (Indonesia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and Vietnam).With the minerals industry facing ongoing rapid growth worldwide, including continuous expansion into developing regions, the æMining+Health in DevelopmentÆ project will inform industry, civil society and regulators of current health management practices and programming among the different sectors of the minerals, oil and gas industries and across various regional operations.
