Recent updates on tailings dam design guidelines require analysis of undrained (short-term) stability with the application of the SHANSEP model. The SHANSEP model, which was originally developed for alluvial soils, predicates that the Undrained Shear Strength (Su) increases with increasing effective stress. Residual soils by their nature do not necessarily follow this relationship. This paper examines an alternate method to define Su over a range of effective stress conditions for residual soils. Residual soils, formed by weathering of their parent rocks, are generally micro-structured in nature. The microstructural features, such as interparticle bonding, play a fundamental role in stress-strain behaviour of the residual soils. As interparticle bonding is independent of effective stress and void ratio, the undrained shear strength of residual soils is expected to be less dependent on effective stress than alluvial soils, especially at low stress levels. A series of triaxial tests conducted on residual soils, however, indicated that the undrained shear strength and the undrained shear strength ratio (Su/σv’) are to a degree dependant on effective stress. It was found that the undrained shear strength ratio is significantly higher under low stress levels and progressively reduces with increasing effective stress. Based on the laboratory testing data, a strength function with varying undrained shear strength ratios can be developed for the residual soils under the stress range anticipated for a design of a tailings dam. This includes capping the input undrained strength at lower effective stresses based on the drained (effective) and minimum undrained strength. The Factor of Safety (FOS) calculated for the embankment utilising the traditional limit equilibrium (LE) method indicated the application of undrained strength function for the residual soils can provide a significant optimisation for the embankment design compared to adopting a constant undrained shear strength ratio or constant undrained shear strength in the design.

Recent exploration has identified the presence of detrital iron deposits (DIDs) associated with banded iron formation (BIF) units in the north-west of the Congo Craton, Gabon. The regional geology comprises a complex of granitoids and gneisses assigned to the Archaean Chaillu Complex, within which older slivers of lower amphibolite-grade greenstones are preserved including muscovite-biotite-garnet-bearing felsic schist, amphibolite and BIF. These units are typically overlain by several metres of residuum comprising colluvium, eluvium and duricrust. The residuum is overlain by a regionally extensive loess cover from 2 m to 10 m thick.The DIDs occur within the weathered residuum as mostly unconsolidated gravels with lesser canga (CAN) duricrust draped over deeply weathered hematite. Head grades are in the range of 45 to 52 per cent Fe. Fresh BIF, located from 30 to 50 m below surface, is comprised of magnetite-quartz±amphibole. The detrital iron gravels are comprised of rod- and plate-shaped clasts of hematite (martite)-maghemite-goethite composition, in a ferruginous sand to clay-sized matrix. The DID form ridges and plateaus that coincide with magnetic highs defined using high-resolution ground magnetic surveys.The field relations and petrography indicate that the detrital iron accumulations are the result of weathering (including enrichment) and erosion of primary BIF. This includes removal of quartz, further oxidation and re-cementation of BIF to form ferruginous caprock. This cap and the in situ oxidised BIF were subsequently disaggregated and liberated, and further weathered to form the detrital iron accumulations.Metallurgical test work on bulk detrital iron samples has shown this material can be upgraded to lump and fines iron ore products with grades of 62 to 65 per cent Fe using simple scrubbing and wet screening, followed by dense media separation of the -1 mm fraction, with overall mass yields from 75 to 85 per cent. Mine operation strategies are commonly optimised with a net present value (NPV) maximisation objective. There are well known properties of a typical mining project optimised for NPV, including high production rates and declining cut-off grade schedules. In practice, however, frequently there are operations that diverge from such NPV-maximising properties. Although a range of reasons for this can be at play, one possible explanation is that operators intuitively adjust their strategies to compensate for the flaws inherent to NPV maximisation. In particular, NPV analysis does not reflect the benefits of managerial flexibility inherent in a mining plan. Real options valuation (ROV) is an alternative approach that addresses this issue. We compare the properties of NPV and ROV optimisation solutions generated for the same scenario. Our simple case study demonstrates that the presence of real operating options in the optimisation model not only entails increased project value as expected, but also tends to encourage lower processing capacity (with lower associated capital cost), higher cut-off grades and greater use of stockpiles.CITATION:Elkington, T and Gould, J, 2012. A Kellogg type computer model of the slag fuming process is applied in reverse to derive some thermodynamic properties of components in lead blast furnace slag. At 1200¦C, the average activity coefficients calculated were 3.40 (S.D. 0.50) for ZnO referred to the pure solid; 0.657 (S.D. 0.022) for PbO referred to the pure liquid; for the ratios y 3.175 y (referred to the Feo.9450, Fe304 pure solids) 4.19 (S.D. 1.15), and for yCaS/ 1CaO (referred to the pure solids) 5.10 (S.D. 2.96). Statistical relationships were derived for these activity coefficients and ratios as functions of the composition of slag, which contained in molar percentages 1.9 - 12.6% ZnO, 19.8 - 24.9% Fe0.9450, 0.9 - 1.6% Fe304, 0.002 - 1.9% PbO, 16.1 - 18.6% CaO, 25.9 - 31.0% SiO2, 4.8 - 5.5% MnO, 9.2 - 10.3% A101.5, 1.2 - 1.4% CaS, and 5.1 - 9.6% "Mgo" (the balance).

The Tonkolili banded iron formations (BIF), Sierra Leone, host extensive iron ore deposits which are of economic signifi cance to the seaborne iron ore trade. The deposits are dominated by a strategic JORC compliant mineral resource of 11.6 Bt grading 30.1 per cent Fe comprised of primary magnetite mineralisation in the form of a fresh metamorphosed BIF featuring a uniform mineral assemblage of quartz-magnetite ± ferro-silicate minerals. Pilot plant metallurgical test work has demonstrated that the production of a magnetite concentrate is achievable using the established beneficiation techniques of magnetic separation and flotation. The concentrates arehigh-grade, and suitable for blast furnace or direct reduced iron pellet feed. The major challenge facing the development of such magnetite deposits at industry competitive production rates is the significant capital investment required for process plant and associated infrastructure.Two well-developed weathering zones exist within the deposits, and are associated with the progressive development of a tropical weathering profile overprinting the primary BIF. These zones feature a near surface hard indurated duricrust up to 60 m thick, and a soft progressively developed saprolite between duricrust and fresh BIF. These zones have been found to be amenable to producing iron ore products including DSO lump and sinter fines from the duricrust, and concentrate from the saprolite. Mineral resources sufficient to support commercial production of such iron ore products were defined by an intensive exploration program in 2010.African Minerals Limited has developed a three phase production strategy to progressively self fund the development of the Tonkolili strategic magnetite project by:• commencing a Phase I 12 Mt/a DSO operation in Quarter 4 2011,• increasing production in Phase II to 35 Mt/a with the commissioning of a saprolite beneficitation plant and associated infrastructure upgrades, and• developing a 45 Mt/a Phase III operation producing high-grade magnetite concentrate.The comparatively low capital and operating costs of a duricrust DSO lump and sinter fines operation coupled with its proximity to ground surface make it highly attractive for the generation of early cash flow for the Tonkolili project. Revenue from this early production may be used to selffund the subsequent development of phases requiring progressively more significant beneficiation plant and infrastructure.

For the past decade, demand for Australian resources has reached unprecedented levels, thanks mainly to the emerging superpowers of China and India. Meeting demand has meant miners and governments alike have ploughed billions into capital expenditure projects for logistics infrastructure such as roads, rail and ports, to support the ever expanding number of mines and mineral volumes. In more recent times, however, the effect of the global economic crisis has led to a decline in demand for Australian minerals. The downturn has seen companies lay off workers in droves, and delay or cancel expansion projects, in an attempt to preserve cash flow. Whilst the current economic cycle has hit the mining sector hard, it is an opportunity for companies to take stock of their existing operations and plan for the future. As mining companies grapple for scarce capital resources, it is inevitable that industry consolidation will ensue. This presents challenges and opportunities for both buyers and sellers alike, looking to expand operations, or sell off assets to raise cash.

In the north of the Netherlands, in the environment of Harlingen, an industrial waste incinerator was installed in 2011. The population in the region is concerned about adverse health effects related to possible emission of dioxins. This study compares the relative merit and reliability of four sampling approaches aimed at quantifying the possible pollution patterns surrounding the incinerator: short-term versus long-term isokinetic flue gas sampling, spatial sampling of grasses and a novel approach developed by the Toxicowatch Foundation, based on local composite sampling of ten eggs from backyard chickens (local area pollution load averaging by accumulating bio-entities). Based on the latter approach results of a new analytical bioassay, DR CALUX®, from 15 locations near Harlingen harbour show distinct above-threshold dioxin levels in the environs of the incinerator. Currently only short-term flue gas sampling is mandated by the authorities; based hereupon, under normal operating conditions, the incinerator appears to be compliant with emission standards. This short-term sampling scheme is seriously flawed, however, in that it only demands one continuous 12-hour sampling period per annum – an extreme grab sampling transgression in the time domain. In starkest possible contrast, significantly elevated dioxins emissions were measured in flue gas during events of unstable combustion conditions by continuous long-term measurements. The dioxin congener patterns from long-term flue gas sampling show similar patterns as the congeners found in backyard chicken eggs and grass, evidence that elevated dioxins in eggs is due to emissions from the incinerator. These results make it mandatory to perform long-term, continuous measurements for all sources where similar high-temperature combustion/emission processes take place. Backyard chicken eggs are a prevalent regional bio-accumulating sample type in rural and agricultural regions, which is relevant to air pollution emission monitoring. There are interesting relationships between this type of sampling bio-sensors and the special bioassay DR CALUX® features, which, although quite outside traditional contexts, never-the-less all can be well understood in the context of the Theory of Sampling. We venture to unravel the complex interactions between correct and incorrect sampling errors and the extraordinary complicated analytical issues involved in monitoring and source tracking using accumulating bio-sensors. "Water is increasingly being recognised as a material business risk that many companies are still not well-equipped to deal with. Despite a raft of water-risk focused initiatives, methodologies and guidelines, the challenge of managing the strong link between the technical and operational water issues, along with the growing external challenges and interests in water, remain a significant risk to a companyÆs ability to deliver value.This paper provides an overview of the key lessons learnt from ERMÆs experience of working with companies across a range of water sensitive industry sectors, in particular, the mining and oil and gas sectors, to develop and implement practical approaches to manage business critical water risk. These examples highlight the importance of managing water risk by linking technical and operational aspects of water management - with the longer term strategic and social license aspects. Four key ingredients were identified that are central to providing companies with a leading edge in the successful mitigation of water risk: understanding and evaluating water risk including the technical and operational aspects of water management, plus the longer term strategic and social aspects articulating a strong business case that prioritises water risks and their financial exposure to the organisation constructing a clear roadmap that practically links the water strategy objectives with on-the-ground implementation and action building capacity in the organisation to manage, engage and coordinate on water to mitigate risk.CITATION:Ringwood, K and Tang, A, 2013. A clear understanding of the meanings of terms is important when discussing a project. Whether it is a submission, an investment study, a feasibility study, an environmental impact statement, an estimate, a tender, a contract, or a close-out.report, the need for all parties involved to understand what is under discussion or what has been written is paramount. The clarity of definition and the level of understanding can affect the outcome of the project. It is vital that all parties know what is wanted, what is expected, and what it will cost. This paper draws attention to some of the problems that beset many projects, clients, project managers and contractors, and it is hoped that its presentation will encourage us to pay more attention to defining what it is that is required. Ultimately we should all be the richer for having defined and understood the requirements at the beginning rather than at the end.

The Clogau St DavidÆs gold mine has a recorded production of around 81 000 oz Au and it is the largest mine in the Dolgellau gold-belt and BritainÆs most prolific historical producer. The original mine was first worked for copper, however; in 1854, gold was found in waste material from the St DavidÆs section. In recent times the mine has operated intermittently between 1983 - 2007. The principal black shale-hosted gold-bearing reef (Main Reef) can be traced for about 3 km, striking approximately NE-SW and dipping steeply between 60¦ - 90¦ SE. The reef system pinches and swells, changes strike and splits into a number of smaller branches. Reef width is variable, ranging from over 6 m to a few cm and in places reducing to small irregular blobs. The reef is internally complex and composed of swarms of narrow (1 - 300 mm) subparallel veins separated by country rock sheets. The gold-bearing veins within the reef package are discontinuous; though generally possess bonanza grades running 10s - 100s oz/t Au. It has historically been shown that some gold-rich vein segments can grade up to 300 oz/t Au. The predictability of the gold-rich segments is poor, but has been shown to be related to presence of the Clogau (black shale) Formation, and/or the mechanical interactions of the reef with greenstone sills, reef branching and splitting and/or cross-fractures to form ore shoots. The State of New South Wales is highly favoured in having vast deposits of coal adjacent to and within easy reach of the coastal Ports. Not only is the quality of the fuel generally superior to any found in the other States, but it is greater in extent than in any other part of the Continent. For interesting and reliable details of the history of the discovery of coal, the geology of the coal bearing strata, analysis of the various coals and other valuable data, the readers are referred to the book recently issued by the New South Wales Government, entitled The Mineral Resources of New South Wales, by Edward F. Pittman, A.R.S.M., etc., by the direction of the Hon. T. L. Fegan, Minister for Mines. The mining community is indebted to the Minister for having had published the most valuable condensed record of the mineral resources of the State extant.For the purposes of this paper we will only give such a general description of the coal fields as will make it intelligible in connection with the subject of the coal mining in the State of New South Wales.

Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) operates one iron ore mine, three concentration plants and three pelletising plants in Kiruna, Sweden. The current methods of separation at the beneficiation plants are low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and reverse apatite flotation, where the wet LIMS stage is regarded as the crucial part of silica separation from the ore. Because future silica levels are expected to increase in the incoming material to the beneficiation plants, geometallurgy has become an important area of development and research.A laboratory-scale methodology was developed for the systematic characterisation of the ore for mineral processing, with the focus on the high silica ore type B2 and newly discovered subtypes. This methodology combines mineralogical, geochemical and process mineralogical characteristics. Automated mineralogy (QEMSCAN®) is used to study the modal mineralogy, the distribution of silicate minerals in different particle size classes after comminution, the deportment of silicon (Si) between various silicates and the degree of liberation and intergrowth of magnetite and silicates. An essential stage in the systematic characterisation of the ore deposit for mineral processing is the estimation and simulation of different parameters from the laboratory scale to the full scale at the concentration plants. This is achieved by using empirical models based on the data collected at the mineral processing plants. As the first step to implement the geometallurgical information, the current geological model is reconstructed with the mineralogy and the two, newly defined subtypes of high silica ore type B2 are separated into different domains.To study the reduction of the SiO2 content in the magnetite concentrate, a large-scale reverse cationic silicate flotation laboratory test program was initiated in early spring 2016. This program investigated potential silicate flotation in the beneficiation plants at the Kiirunavaara site. The second target is to implant mineral processing parameters into the block model based on the new geological model. This information provides a good basis for making a prognosis for mine planning and a quality prognosis regarding the crude ore for mineral processing.CITATION:Niiranen, K, 2017. When xanthates or dithiophosphates are used as collectors in sulphide ore flotation, adsorbed species may be identified by gas chromatography of the volatile products formed during low temperature pyrolysis. For collector additions ,as low as 20 g/tonne of ore, pyrolysis of the flotation products usually gives' an olefin directly related to the particular xanthate or Aerofloat reagent used. The method is able to provide valuable qualitative and quantitative data relating to the extent of collector adsorption and the resulting changes in the hydrophilic or hydrophobic nature of the mineral surface.

This paper discusses the impacts that advances in metallurgy and process engineering have on minerals project execution. Ausenco's business is focused on integrating minerals processing technology and the delivery of cost effective processing plants that exceed client performance expectations. The metallurgical development is a small but critical part of this process. Metallurgical development and innovation outcomes need to be transformed into an engineered solution and that solution converted into an operating plant in a cost conscious and competitive environment. Including new or innovative processes in a project flow sheet increases a project's technical and commercial risk. However, it also gives the project, and/or the engineering company, a potential advantage over projects using mainline practices. Managing the balance between risk and opportunity has been a cornerstone of Ausenco's success in recent years. Some advances in "technology" that are discussed in the paper include: larger capacity equipment new flow sheet concepts simplification of process interfaces, and more effective project strategies The common theme is that having a new idea can be the easy bit, putting it into operation effectively involves numerous people, many interfaces and strong project management.

Although the majority of current steel production is supported by iron ore sourced from high-grade haematite deposits, the long-term growing demand for steel has led to higher raw material prices and opened the way for many new magnetite deposits to also be developed. There is a rich and long history of magnetite ore processing in Western countries, including large operations such as Cleveland Cliffs in the USA and LKAB in Sweden, as well as smaller operations like Savage River in Tasmania. The challenge for virtually all magnetite operations is to minimise operating costs, which is dominated by the cost of power required to fine grind the ore in order to achieve acceptable concentrate iron grade together with low impurity content. This remains the case today and will be even more important in the future when a carbon tax is expected to become a significant addition to the operating costs for magnetite deposits. Historically, the lowest operating cost was achieved by multistage fully autogenous grinding with integrated magnetic separation steps between the stages. The major benefit of fully autogenous grinding is the elimination of steel grinding media costs and the need to discriminate between steel and magnetite in coarse magnetic separation. The separation step between grinding stages progressively reduces the amount of material to be ground. Application of more efficient grinding technologies developed in the last 20 years, including high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) for fine crushing and stirred milling for fine grinding, has provided opportunities to further reduce the operating costs associated with comminution. Both technologies are already implemented in some magnetite processing operations, although in limited capacity. The results of a theoretical option study for high capacity processing of a hard, fine-grained silica-rich magnetite ore is presented in this paper, with the emphasis on comminution circuit options. Several circuit options are ranked based on a net present value analysis incorporating an estimate of carbon tax added in the operating cost. The study demonstrates the significant advantages of applying more efficient autogenous grinding technologies.

Analyses of scheelite from all the known scheelite fields in the South Island of New Zealand have shown that the scheelites are essentially molybdenum-free. The scheelites are almost stoichiometric CaWO4, except for some strontium replacing the calcium, with a maximum of 0·92 per cent SrO. Variation in strontium content appears to be' related to the metamorphic grade of the enclosing rocks.

The discussion which followed the publication of my paper by the formert has, I think, enhanced its value. It may therefore be of interest to members of our Australasian Institute, who are not members of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, if I give a synopsis of the discussion.My attention was drawn to the fact that my paper did not make clear the extent of the improvement in furnace operations, which followed the use of coke of high quality; this comment applied more particularly to the lead content of slag. The main problem of geostatistical simulations is to reproduce the real characteristics of the mineral deposit when there are few conditioning data. In this case, the geological interpretation, based on structures, geophysics and geological maps, plays the major role in terms of resource evaluation.The paper investigates the use of principal component analysis (PCA) to help classify multiple geostatistical categorical simulations considering the similarity among them and the interpreted model, herein referred as training image (TI).An iron deposit with four lithological facies, in a specific horizontal plane, was used as case study for two-dimensional (2D) simulations. Sequential indicator simulations (SIS) was used to obtain ten equally probable 2D images, which were generated and compared against the interpreted model (TI).In this study, 11 random variables are comprised by the vector of ten SIS realisations plus the training image (TI). The similarity between the TI and each SIS realisation is measured using the angle between the TI and SIS vectors projected in the new coordinate systems (PCA factors). It is possible to order the SIS realisations from the highest to the lowest PCA factor taking into account the TI similarity.The visual analysis of the images shows coherence in the PCA results as a method to measure similarity. This methodology can be used as a post-processing tool to rank simulation results and to select the ones which better represent the prior known geology or to compare the quality of different methods of simulation.

Mineral resource and ore reserve estimates are founded on two sources of data: tonnage and grade. The tonnage is a product of volume and density; both of which are estimates. Density impacts numerous operational factors, which include, but are not limited to, mine design, mine planning, equipment selection and operational performance. Hence, density is a significant parameter and its determination requires similar care as the measurement of grade. Selecting an appropriate method to determine density, and ensuring its rigorous application, thus reduces risk and can improve operational performance, which in turn increases profit margin.Different Anglo American sites use a variety of practices and protocols to determine density, which is highly dependent on the physical characteristics of the orebody, local conditions and historical practices. Also, individual sites sometimes execute the same method in a slightly different way, which may also affect the outcome of the measurements. In order to gain a better understanding of how density is determined at Anglo American projects and operations, a review of these techniques was undertaken. The objective of the study was to identify and share good practices across the company, as well as to look for improvement opportunities, where applicable. Ten different methods of measuring density, applied to nine different commodities, were identified and described. An additional technique was recently developed by Anglo American Technical Solutions. The core pycnometer is a large gas displacement pycnometer capable of measuring density at high accuracy on full pieces of intact core.This paper provides an overview of methods used to determine density within the Anglo American Group, including quality control and quality assurance aspects. It is not the purpose of this paper to identify a preferred method, but to highlight the importance of choosing the best suited practice for a project or mine site.
