The increased use of sintering for the beneficiation of iron ores and the reclaiming of flue dust creates a lively interest in sintering costs and economics. The character of material sintered and geographical location of plants so radically alter sintering costs and economics that it is well.to understand at least the basic elements which control such changes. The following cost factors are believed to be roughly approximated for large-scale Dwight-Lloyd continuously operated sinter-machine installations located anywhere. It is impracticable to prepare for the present number of the Bi-Monthly Bulletin a detailed account of the memorable Joint Meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute and our Institute, held in London, the last week in July, and of the, innumerable festivities, entertainments and excursions which accompanied and followed it, in England, Scotland, Wales and Germany. This preliminary sketch, from which all " useful particulars "' have been carefully omitted, is published unofficially, as a convenient answer to the manifold inquiries of members who did not go, and who are now trying to alleviate their unavailing regret by indulging their curiosity. Perhaps they secretly hope to hear that they did not lose so very much, after all-that the affair was not all that could have been desired or dreamed; that there were serious drawbacks, shortcomings and disappointments; and that it is just as well to have stayed it home, and now to hear about it. Let them lay no such flattering unction to their souls. The month they have missed would have been the time of their lives. They will never, never know how good a time it was, or adequately repent of their folly, if they could have gone with us, and voluntarily did not go of course, those who would but could not, have our immeasurable pity, without blame. I shall present here no consecutive and minute story, but only a series of general paragraphs concerning different aspects and stages of our experience. THE WEATHER. The proverbial good fortune of the Institute attended its visiting members and guests at every stage of the late London meeting and the numerous excursions which accompanied or followed it. Even the process of crossing the Atlantic was made delightful by smooth seas, through which the great modern transatlantic liners made their way without disagreeable

TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS Gentlemen:-I have the honor to present the following, report for the calendar year 1920. The activities which seem to call for special comment are: THE NEW FORM OF MAGAZINE MINING AND METALLURGY appeared every month during the calendar year and has been developed until it contains some ten departments. It has brought forth more commendatory letters than have been received at headquarters on any other subject throughout the year. Less than a dozen letters unfavorable to the change have been received, and the indications are that the magazine has met a want deeply felt, especially by members distant from headquarters. The technical papers printed by the Institute are published in abstract in the magazine and opportunity is given to members who desire them to receive full copies of any or all papers published. The Bound Volumes, as usual, contain all the papers in full and discussions thereof. FINANCES The greatly increased cost of paper and printing has put a tremendous burden on the Institute's finances, since the dues of $12 per year are only 20 per cent. greater than the members paid when the Institute was founded forty-nine years ago. This has resulted in a temporary deficit, similar to that encountered by many of our sister engineering societies. The fact that our Institute has lower dues and gives more in the way of publications to its members than any other of the national engineering societies has rendered the situation more difficult for us. MEETINGS The Annual Meeting in New York, the Field Meeting in the Lake Superior District, the meeting of the Petroleum and Gas members at St. Louis, and of the Institute of Metals Division in Columbus, Ohio, have all been described in full in the magazine.

In 1970, the federal Clean Air Act was passed, promulgating limits on the emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) from large stationary sources that would affect local air quality. The brunt of this regulation was felt by the electric utility industry, especially those units generating electricity with coal-fired boilers. The law hastened development of a new industry, flue gas desulfurization (FGD), which is composed of three major segments: the electric utility, the FGD equipment suppliers (the scrubbing modules), and the scrubbing chemical suppliers. Dravo's experience suggested the equipment end of the business, but market analysis recommended investigating the chemical processes involved in the removal of the SO2 gas. This resulted in the formation of Dravo Lime Co. to manufacture and market reagents to the FGD industry. This paper will briefly describe the Thiosorbic lime scrubbing process and review Dravo's innovative mine and calcining facility.

H. L. Burghoff.*—Have the authors any information on the effect of grain size in these materials? There is a material difference in the grain sizes shown for the Monel and the Inconel. Is a wide range of grain size normally found for each material, and, if so, what is its effect upon creep strength? 11. L. Eiselstein.—The grain size for Monel shown in the micrograph is the usual size found in that product. The grain size of Inconel is about the same as that, too. However, we have run tests on Inconel at higher temperatures than those reported in this paper, and have found that the coarser grain size has a better creep resistance; and that the grain size that gives the best creep resistance at 1600°F. is about 0.005 in. in diameter. We have no test on Monel with varying grain size. J. J. KANTER.†-It has been known for a long time that Monel metal exhibits ductility anomalies at elevated temperatures. Even in short-time test, it can be demonstrated in the range of 900°F. that there is a distinct falling off of the ability of Mone1 metal to elongate, and in rupture tests this shortcoming is still further accentuated. Knowledge of this rupture anomaly of Monel metal may be one of the reasons for which designer's approach certain high-temperature applications with reservations. The authors of this paper have merely demonstrated that for 900°F. the alloy has an ability to elongate 1.7 per cent over a period of some 2700 hr. Before any conviction can be expected from designers that Monel metal is applicable to stress design in such range of temperature, I think it is desirable to demonstrate the capacity for the material to elongate over a longer period of time than has been done in this presentation.

There seems to be dire need of repeated preachment against the too-frequent sad neglect of instrumental surveying and mapping in geological surveys. The value of the map as an illustration of the statements and opinions of a report is too apt to be overlooked; and its essential necessity in working out during its construction the proper conclusions from the observed facts is generally altogether misunderstood. Practical geology seeks, of course, to ascertain and indicate the character of workable or unworkable beds or veins, their depth, position, dip, and horizontal course, or strike, even below the surface; also their outcrops, and therefore, if workable, their extent; and so, taking account of their thickness and specific gravity, their weight in tons. It might, therefore, be called quantitative geology. For the study of more abstruse geological questions, too, it is in many cases necessary to gain some knowledge, or reasonable opinion, in regard to such hidden facts. In some cases, careful instrumental surveys are made; in others, from necessity or choice, there are few or no instrumental observations. It was said, 15 or 20 years ago, that there was an engineer in the anthracite-regions who was capable of telling, on first glancing at a new place, exactly what coal-bed was to be found there at a certain depth, and how thick—a splendid second-sight! "' 0, there be,' " you may be tempted to exclaim, " geologists ' that I have seen' geologize ' and heard others praise, and that highly, not to speak it profanely, "'—but let them pass without being fully characterized, lest the temptation towards profanity be altogether too strong. Yet such second-sight does not exceed the expectations of many men of imperfect geological knowledge, men who have heard of marvel-ously successful geological predictions, but are unaware of

The estimate of average vein composition is based on field acquaintance with the veins. It is probably correct in its broader proportions, and should be of use for comparison. THE COMMITTEE on Production Control of the Institute has accomplished little or nothing tangible during the last year. For this the chairman must accept responsibility and whatever praise or blame goes with it. However, we have all had plenty of opportunity to observe the results obtained by various producing groups in their attempts to regulate production to meet demand dur¬ing the last few years. It would be putting it mildly to say that these have not been such as to inspire confidence in the methods pursued. The present plight of the wheat, cotton, coffee and sugar growers; the oil, copper, lead, zinc and tin producers, to name a few of the unfortunates, suggests a common cause perhaps beyond their control. There is a growing tendency to question as outmoded the theories of laissez faire economics, with its laws of competition, supply and demand, with price as the automatic regulator. The position is maintained that something new should be substituted because these laws no longer work. Many solutions are offered, ranging in the world at large from the planned economy of Russia, with the profit element removed, to the military controlled economy of Fascism, and in our own country from voluntary curtailment to martial law. But one hardly feels driven by any irresistible logic to put his finger on any one of these proposals, and to say this is the one in which I believe. On turning to one's neighbors, one is still more confused by the realization that this intellectual uncertainty is wide-spread. Isolation or cooperation, protection or free trade, the gold standard, bimetallism or managed currencies, de¬flation or inflation, all have their proponents in whose eyes one or the other of these slogans will afford the panacea for all our ills.

THE mine and milling plant of Demonstration Gold Mines, Ltd., is near the city limits of Baguio, Mt. Province, P. I. The mine road connects with the main highway to Manila. The nearest railway point is near sea level, approximately 40 miles distant. The Baguio district is very mountainous and has one of the heaviest rainfalls in the world. It is therefore difficult to maintain roads or to impound tailings and mine dumps. All supplies are trucked into the district direct from Manila or the nearest railway point, which means uncertain deliveries and high freight rates. Installation of equipment is difficult and costly. The average elevation at the mine is 4000 ft. and the climatic conditions are ideal except for a three months rainy season. The company generates its own power for mining and milling operations with three 400-hp. Ruston Diesel engines direct connected to 250-kw. General Electric alternating current generators. Labor conditions have been excellent, although at present social security laws are causing some unrest. Labor receives a higher average wage rate in this district than other labor in the Islands. The company also furnishes free living quarters, hospitalization and work- men's compensation. Taxation has been reasonable up to the present time, but some of the new mining legislation may make it difficult to operate and pay dividends. The future depends largely upon the continuation of $35 gold and the political outcome in the Islands. HISTORY The Demonstration ore body was worked by the Igorots for many years, as evidenced by old stopes and fill encountered in present operations. Attention of Americans was first attracted soon after the Spanish- American war. During the building of the Benguet road to Baguio, the engineers and foreman became interested in the geology of the district.

INTRODUCTION In recent years there has been increased social awareness and government attention directed toward the mining industry. The growing influence of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has resulted in volumes of regulations governing a multitude of health and safety aspects of mining and milling. These regulations naturally have had an impact on new plant design and in some cases have necessitated retrofitting of existing plants. This paper will not examine the regulations governing the industry, since they are a matter of public record, but rather will address two specific health considerations, dust and noise, and their influence on the design of crushing and screening plants. DUST AND NOISE CONCEPTS Dust is generally defined as finely divided solids which may become airborne without any physical or chemical change except fracture. Since the purpose of comminution circuits is to reduce the size of solids by fracture, a percentage of the material is normally reduced in size to a point where it can easily become airborne. The major cause of dust becoming airborne is the air induced by falling material. When granular material falls through a distance, the induced (or entrapped) air rushes out available openings, carrying with it the fine particles that have become suspended. For this reason, the major points of dust generation are the points where the material is falling: chutes, transfer points, screens and equipment feed and discharge points. The expected dust concentration in an area is a function of the degree of size reduction (i.e., finer particles are more readily carried by air currents than heavier particles) and the volume of air that is induced. INTRODUCTION THE present war in Europe seems to have stimulated the demand for quicksilver. In July last, the price ranged around $35 per flask of 75 lb., while to-day it seems to fluctuate between $47.50 and $50. The use of quicksilver in the form of fulminate, containing 70 per cent., and as corrosive sublimate, containing 73.8 per cent., must be extensive and a further market advance may be expected. With such an advance, some revival in quicksilver mining maybe looked for, particularly in California, where many abandoned properties exist. What can be done with low-grade quicksilver ores under favorable conditions, particularly with low mining cost, may be seen from the following description of the Oceanic mine, near. San Luis Obispo, Cal. Its operations date back to 1876, when rich sand ores were discovered. In three years 7,400 flasks of quick-silver were produced, but since then the deposit has been only sporadically worked. Until two years ago various attempts had been made by the Oceanic Quicksilver Co. to mine the more refractory "mud rock," which was encountered lying beyond the "sand rock." Mud and sand rock in varying quantities were treated together with poor results, but operations were successful with sand rock of fair percentage. About two years ago,, when all the sand rock had been exhausted, Murray Innes purchased the Oceanic mine. He found large quantities of low-grade mud rock, varying from 6 to 8 lb. of quicksilver per ton, which at the prevailing low price of quick-silver demanded very cheap mining costs, in conjunction with high but cheap metallurgical extraction. At that time the extraction of quicksilver from mud rock ranged between 40 and 50 per cent., as far as I am able to, learn.

SILICIDE coatings on refractory metals are often applied by transporting a silicon halide vapor to a hot metal surface where dissociation or hydrogen reduction occurs. The subsequent chemical reaction to produce the coating requires diffusion of silicon or the refractory metal through the in situ silicide layer. This solid-state diffusion process step is often slower than the vapor-transport step and, therefore, rate controlling. This situation is analogous to the parabolic oxidation of metals in which the oxidation rate is controlled by diffusion through the oxide layer. The purposes of this study were to 1) measure the rate of formation of MoSiz and MoSi2 coatings under conditions such that the silicide diffusion process is rate controlling and lower silicide compounds are not formed and 2) determine by a marker experiment whether silicon or the respective refractory metals are the principal diffusing species in the disilicides.

IN recent years the use of high sulphur fuels and charges in steelmaking has necessitated rapid methods of slag control in order to insure the production of high quality steel. Several systems of control have been discussed in the literature, and of these the method described by Philbrook, Jolly, and Henry' has received the most attention recently. In their process the hydrogen ion concentration of an aqueous slag suspension is determined under controlled, but arbitrary conditions. The basicity of the slag may then be derived from a previously established pH-V ratio curve. Thus, by measuring the pH, some indication of the V ratio is gained, from which significant properties of the slag may be deduced. Philbrook et al. made no claims as to the theoretical justification of their treatment, but simply offered it as a rapid means of slag control. Encouraging results caused others to study the method and publish their findings.2-5 Although there was fair agreement on the efficacy of the method, no common parameter was evolved against which pH readings could be plotted. The results of the various determinations were related to such V ratios as CaO/SiO2 and CaO/ SiO2 + P2O5 by some,'-3 while others" plotted against "excess lime." Rivet,' however, found a simple proportionality between the hydrogen ion concentration and the sulphur content of the molten steel beneath the slag. Since slag control in North American practice is largely directed toward the efficient removal of sulphur from steel, Rivet's approach to the problem had the advantage of connecting directly a property of the slag with the impurity being removed. In view of the diversity of parameters used it seemed probable that some fundamental point was being overlooked in seeking a relationship. Examination of the literature revealed that much emphasis had been laid on experimental detail but scant attention paid to the fundamental aspects of the hydrolysis of the aqueous slag suspension. Consequently the present investigation was undertaken with the object of rectifying this deficiency and deriving, if possible, a parameter of general application. Petrographic studies on several matured Canadian open-hearth steel slags have shown that their major constituents are dicalcium and tricalcium silicates set in a complex matrix of iron oxides and ferrites. These phases are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Free lime is frequently encountered in slags, but is not an equilibrium phase since on continued heating it dissolves forming silicates or ferrites. Thus, it appeared that a study of the hydrolysis of the major phases in steel slags would be profitable. The experimental technique used in the present work was a modification of that described by the other workers.'- Electrical conductivity measurements were also made on the suspensions, since Smith et al." had claimed advantages for this method in their paper on slag control. Systematic investigations on silver-rare earth metal systems have been extended on the Ag-Ce system in order to clarify the discrepancies reported in literature. The phase diagram has been reinvestigated on the base of thermal analyses and of microstructure examination on cast and annealed specimen. All intermetallic phases Ag4Ce, Ag3Ce, Ag2Ce and AgCe show no extended range of homogeneity, they melt congruently fm), or decompose peritectically (d) at 815 °C (d), 1030 °C (m), 855 °C (d) and 855 °C (m), respectively. The system shows eutectics at 793 °C/10 at.%, 780 °C/42 at.%, and about 505 °C/81 at.% Ce. d-Ce dissolves up to 2 at .% Ag and decomposes metatectically at 710 °C. Furthermore, the phase transformation of the intermetallics would be clarified. The phases Ag5Ce and Ag51Ce14 reported in literature could not be verified.

On April 1, 1937, Burma, formerly a province of the Indian Empire, was formally separated from India and became an independent unit of the British Commonwealth. In future, therefore, statistics of oil production in India will exclude Burma and those for Burma will be separately published. The last few years have been marked by noteworthy, almost spectacular, developments in the oil fields of Burma and the Punjab. In Burma these developments have been the proving of unexpected extensions of the existing fields and not the discovery of entirely new fields. The new extensions are important not only to Burma in giving a new lease of life to her fields, but also in general as stressing some interesting geological aspects hitherto neglected. Production The production of crude oil in Imperial gallons has been: Burma India 1934 254,760,070 67,265,210 1935 251,338,974 . 71,323,362 1936 265,656,393 69,241,504 1937 (eat.) 270,000,000 70,000,000 The Chindwin Fields.—The small field at Indaw continues to produce steadily about 3,000,000 gal. a year, but no really deep test has yet been successfully carried out and resources are thus not yet fully known. The remote location of the field, inaccessible except by river and situated 22 miles from the Chindwin 270 miles up that river from its junction with the Irrawaddy, has not encouraged active exploitation. The field is worked exclusively by the Indo-Burma Petroleum Co., Ltd. (I.B.P.), using now an automatic gas-lift system, and the company formerly refined the oil at a small refinery at Pantha on the river near by. The chief market was for kerosene in upper Burma. The refinery has now been closed. The oil is stored on the field during the low-water season

THE questions as to what grades of ore it pays to conserve for the future, and the valuation of low-grade reserves, are becoming immediate and definite as applied to individual ore deposits, and seem to call for some sort of quantitative answer. Both opinion and practice involving these questions differ widely. The number of variables in this problem is so large that final solution will perhaps never be agreed upon, yet there seem to me to be certain controlling factors which can be placed in quantitative relation and serve to reduce the number of variables which it is necessary to consider in a given instance. I assume that it will not pay either for the individual or for the State to conserve any ore when the present cost of conservation (by stock piling or otherwise), when compounded at 6 per cent. interest for the number of years which would elapse before this ore is used, will exceed the profit which the ore will yield when it is used. It may be urged that any loss to the individual may be made up in gain to the State. This might be true if there was any definite limit to the amount of iron ore, but when we remember that iron makes up .4 per cent. of all the rocks of the earth and the amount of rock carrying iron in excess of 20 per cent. is for practical purposes, unlimited, it is apparent that posterity is assured of its iron ore. The changes will be mainly in methods and cost of extracting the ore. Therefore, any expenditure of money or effort now, which when compounded will exceed the worth of the effort or money needed in the future to utilize the iron, is a net loss both to the individual and to the community.

ALTHOUGH the earliest use of rubber-tired haulage was in Illinois in 1936, the first unit of this type of equipment used in West Virginia was shipped into the state in 1938. All units placed in West Virginia mines have been of the shuttle-car type. The Katherine Coal Mining Co., at Lumberport, W. Va., was the second company in the United States to install shuttle cars and the Gay Coal and' Coke Co., at [ ] Mt. Gay, W. Va., was the first company in the country to install the thin-bed type of shuttle car. On Oct. 8, 1940, nine companies in the state were using 41 shuttle cars, of which 10 cars at three mines were of the thin-bed type. All shuttle cars of the low type were in the southern fields and all of the high type were in northern West Virginia. At that time several units were in the process of delivery. The data in this paper were collected in the field by Mr. Schroder in connection with graduate work on mechanical loading of coal in West Virginia by mobile loaders. In the course of his field work he visited five mines in the state that were using shuttle cars. All of these mines were in high-volatile coal beds of strong structure. [ ] The more pertinent data obtained at the mines visited are given in Table I. The maximum distance of shuttle-car haul is the distance between the transfer station and the farthermost place. Tonnage per loading unit per foot of bed thickness is to some degree a measure of relative efficiency, especially if the different operations are working the same bed or have somewhat similar conditions. Will the nickel oxide affect the rate of corrosion in a double sulfate solution; or will the nickel oxide dissolve in a double sulfate solution? I would also like to ask whether a 98 per cent. pure nickel anode will corrode as fast as a 96 per cent. nickel anode; whether electrolytic nickel will corrode less rapidly than nickel containing a small amount of carbon; and whether the materials some-times used in coating molds for casting nickel anodes will affect the rate of corrosion of the anode? In other words, whether an electrically non conducting coating is likely to be present that will prevent the nickel anode from corroding rapidly. JOHN F. THOMPSON.-The nickel oxide will not dissolve in the double sulfate solution, as far as we know. We do not make the ordinary nickel anode of commerce, but we supply nickel to the nickel anode makers. Those makers almost invariably buy a high-carbon nickel shot, ranging around 0.45 per cent. carbon. In their process, they even further, car-burize it so as to get nickel that will melt easily and be fluid enough to fill the mold, so that the ordinary cast anode on the market is unquestion-ably oxide free. The only time that such an anode will have oxide will be through an error in melting. Some cupola makers of anodes have had trouble with oxidation, but as a rule the anodes are thoroughly carburized; so much so that they probably carry a couple of per cent. of carbon of which around. 1.6 per cent. is graphite.

AT the last meeting of the Institute, a discussion arose upon the question, Is there pressure in coke ovens?" and many of the members seemed to think that the superiority of the Belgian furnace might be due to the fact that it is a completely closed chamber, in which the gases given off by the coal are, or may be, at more than the atmospheric reassure. It seems to me that this position is untenable, 'and that an examination of one of these ovens in operation will show, not only that there is no excess of pressure in the coke chamber, but that the contrary is true, and a partial vacuum exists. The Belgian or Francoise oven consists of a rectangular chamber closed at the ends by sliding doors, and furnished with flues in the side walls and floor. The new charge is introduced at a time when the furnace is so hot as to cause immediate and copious discharge of the volatile constituents of the coal. The gases pass downwards through the side flues giving out their heat to the walls and thus to the coal. Underneath the floor air is introduced and the gases burn, producing intense heat. Heat is also reflected from the arched roof upon the coal which is therefore heated from all sides. The especial advantage which this construction was designed to secure is that no air is admitted to the coke-chamber. All the heat is produced by the combustion of the unsociable gases, and the yield ought to be a maximum. I t is so in fact, allowing for the imperfections inseparable from furnace construction and management. Sometimes the yield is in excess of the percentage indicated by assay, showing that
