Most crude oils contain asphaltic substances that may be naturally or artificially precipitated. In the Greeley field, California, this asphaltic bitumen is precipitated during the flow of the oil from the reservoir to the stock tank The mechanism of such precipitation is not well understood. This paper presents the progress that has been made by using the electron microscope as a new tool and by observing the effects of the streaming potential on the formation of bitumen particles. Crude oils at atmospheric pressure viewed in the electron microscope in very thin films under a vacuum showed no asphaltic particles. A technique of preparing slides of thin films by dilution of the oil with benzene and washing in petroleum ether was used at first, and these observations showed that the solvents caused the formation of the particles, varying from 0.01 to 0.2 micron in diameter. The electrical effects of fluids flowing through porous solid were studied, with emphasis on the formation of colloidal particles by the streaming potential. The streaming potential of crude oil flowing through sand was measured and was shown to be responsible for the formation of bitumen particles. These results bring out a new phenomenon, which may occur when crude oil flows through the porous oil reservoir. mechanisms. Asphalt has been the subject of widespread investigation but, owing to the complexity of the substances being considered, progress has been slow. Investigators working primarily with the asphaltic substances have treated the subject from the colloidal standpoint and have developed theories that picture the asphaltic particles as surrounded by adsorbed materia1s.14,15,17,24 The deasphaltization of lubricating oil by the use of solvents treats the subject primarily from the standpoint of liquid-liquid equilibria.'' A complete understanding of asphaltic substances would make possible the following of the material from its initial state in the crude oil through precipitation processes to the final plastic stage, the most common form of which is used in asphaltic pavements. Since these asphaltic particles are very small, it appears 'hat the electron microscope4 might be a useful tool in studying the precipitation processes. Specimens are examined by the electron microscope in a vacuum and as very thin films, requiring special techniques in preparation of samples. A brief description of the electron microscope and its operation will bring out the difficulties and advantages of its use for this problem. The first work was done with crude oils that had been diluted with solvents for the preparation of the film to be examined. Later a technique was developed by which the undiluted oil film could be made thin enough for direct examination. It has been a matter of concern to the petroleum industry to determine what effect the capillary term has on saturation profiles, since these profiles determine ultimate economic oil recovery. In their original solution of the non-capillary two-phase flow problem, Buckley and Leverett&apos; showed that solutions of the two-phase flow equations became multiple-valued in saturation. Since it is physically unrealistic for saturation to have more than one value at a given position, Buckley and Leverett resolved this difficulty by introducing a saturation discontinuity or "shock". They evaluated the strength and position of the shock from material balance considerations. Recently Sheldon, Zondek and Cardwell&apos; have demonstrated that the method of characteristics can be used to solve this and related problems. Owing to capillarity it is physically unlikely that saturation shocks occur in an oil reservoir. Buckley and Leverett suggested that the effects of interfacial tensions should be included in the fluid flow equations, if the solutions are to give continuous single-valued saturation distributions. An analogy to this problem is encountered in the theory of wpersonic compressible flow where the introduction of the viscous term eliminates shock behavior. However, the mathematical form of the capillary term in the porous medium fluid flow equations differs from the viscosity term in the Navier-Stokes equation. This paper demons~rates that capillarity does eliminate the triple-valued behavior and indicates the magnitude of capillary and gravity effects on the saturation profile for a variety of systems. DERIVATION OF LAGRANGIAN AND EULERIAN FORMS OF THE DISPLACEMENT EQUATION The equations representing capillary, two-phase flow are given by applying Darcy&apos;s law and a material balance condition for each phase. WHEELER, St. Louis, Mo.-This paper by Mr. Wright is one of the most thorough and exhaustive studies that has been made of the milling practice in the Joplin district. Mr. Wright spent about two years there, in behalf of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Missouri Geological Survey, and this paper, which is the result of his work, will, repay careful reading by any student of ore dressing and is invaluable to an operator in that district.

The effects of drilling variable on rotary drilling rates and efficiencies have been studied by a series of laboratory drilling tests. TWO-cone 1.25-in. diameter hits were used to drill vertically upwards into rock samples at corltrolled weights and rates of rotation. Shale, sandstone and specially prepared concrete samples were used in this study. Power input to the ririllirig systeln was measured and drilling chips collected for energy — .size reduction studies. Reasouably good correlations between drilling variables and rates of penetrotion were found. Qrrantities that are difficult to evaluate include rock strength parameters and the effects of bit wear. Effects of bit size and geormetry require further investigation. Analysis of the drilling chips confirmed the premise that, for rocks containing two or more mineral constituents of diflerent strengths, a greater amourrt of rock breakage occurs in the weaker constituent. Drilling conditions which required greater amounts of energy produced finer drilling chips. As bit tooth wear progressed, drilling chips became finer. Efficiency of rotary drilling as a rock breakage mechanism was extremely low. Comparison was made with theoretical energy requirements and with energy requirements for size reduction by comminution methods. INTRODUCTION Many technological developments and innovations have made possible the successful drilling of oil wells by the rotary method to depths exceeding 20,000 ft. Bigger, more powerful rigs, better steels, improved bit design and more careful control of the circulating system have all contributed to this success. Despite these advances comparatively little is known regarding the basic mechanism of rock breakage by the rotary drilling process. Future improvements and, in particular, reduction of drilling costs will undoubtedly require a clearer understanding of the variables controlling effectiveness and efficiency of rotary drilling. Rotary drilling is inherently an inefficient means of producing rock breakage. Loss of energy in transmission from the surface to the cutting mechanism may be large, thus limiting the total amount of energy which may be applied to rock breakage. Increased efficiency may be realized by improved energy transmission methods such as the turbodrill. Conversion of transmitted energy to rock breakage by use of rotating cutter teeth is likewise inefficient. Improvement of cutter efficiency has been obtained essentially by empirical means —changes in bit tooth size, shape and spacing, and tooth deletion to give clean bottom-hole patterns. The present work was undertaken to investigate the factors controlling rates of bit penetration under laboratory drilling conditions. Laboratory drilling apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The effects of rock strength and bit wear on drilling rates were investigated. Drill cuttings were analyzed to determine the character of breakage and to compare this with other methods of producing rock breakage. 296. Definition of Specific Gravity. - The specific gravity of a mineral is the ratio of its density * to that of water at 4&apos; C. (39&apos;2&apos; F.). This relative density may be learned in any case by comparing the ratio of the weight of a certain volume of the given substance to that of an equal volume of water; hence the specific gravity is often defined as: the weight of the body divided by the weight of an equal volume of water. The statement that the specific gravity of graphite is 2, of corundum 4, of galena 7-5, etc., means that the densities of the minerals named are 2; 4, and 7&apos;5, etc., times that of water; in other words, as familiarly expressed, any volume of them, a cubic inch for example, weighs 2 times, 4 times, 7.5 times, etc., as much rn a like volume, a cubic inch, of water. Strictly speaking, since the density of water varies with its expansion or contraction under change of temperature, the comparison should be made with water at a fixed temperature, namely 4&apos; C. (39&apos;2&apos; F.), at which it has its maxi- mum density. If made at a higher temperature, a suitable correction should be introduced by calculation. Practically, however, since a high degree of accuracy is not often called for, and, indeed, in many cases is impracticable to attain in consequence of the nature of the material at hand, in the ordinary work of obtaining the specific gravity of minerals the temperature at which the observation is made can safely be neglected. Common variations of temperature would seldom affect the value of the specific gravity to the extent of one unit in the third decimal place.

This paper discusses a Personal Computer (PC) software package that reduces the time required to evaluate a mineral reserve. It provides for: •Entry of borehole data onto PC diskettes and the creation of a borehole database; •Capture of map data using an attached X-Y digitizer; •Calculation of uniform square grids for thickness, mineral qualities, overburden ratio, etc., •Compilation of multiple such grids into a digital model, and iterative evaluation of the model with the user applying constraints and cut-off values; and • Graphic display of grid cells (blocks) showing which cells failed, and on which constraint(s), and a complete reserve report showing tonnages, averages, histograms, and quality arrays.

Pore volume compresibilitieu measured in the laborutory on core .samples are reported for typical reservoir .sarrrl.rtorres at reservoir pressure. These cornpressibilities ore different for each reseriloir sample and cannot be correlated to porosity. The compressihilities are a1so functions of presslire. In recent years several authors have pointed out the importance of including pore volume compressibility of the reservoir rock in certain reservoir engineering calculations. Hall&apos; showed that in calculating the hydrocarbon volume of an undersaturated reservoir from the production per unit change in reservoir pressure, the neglect of rock compressibility could, in the extreme case of low porosity rock, lead to results in error by a factor of two. Hawkinsl&apos; and Hobson and Mrosovsky showed that both rock and interstitial water compressibilities must be included to achieve satisfactory accuracy in this calculation. Although rock compressibility is an important reservoir property in these calculations, very few data are available. Hall&apos; made compressibility measurements on a few samples in a small pressure range. No other direct pore volume compressibility measurements have been reported. Geertsma&apos; discussed the elasticity of reservoir rock but did not present any new data. In this paper, rock compressibilities suitable for reservoir calculations are reported for a variety of sandstones typical of U. S. reservoirs. The measurements were made through a range of pressures which is also typical of reservoirs. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Plugs 1 in. in diameter and 2- to 3-in. long were diamond drilled, 14 from cores from seven oil-bearing or potentially oil-bearing sandstone, one from a quarried sandstone, and another from a shallow, oil-free, pure orthoquartzite. The plugs were extracted in toluene, vacuum dried, and then weighed. The plugs were then saturated with kerosene and reweighed. This gave pore volume. They were then again extracted in toluene. vacuum dried, and jacketed in 0.004-in. thick copper foil. A short length of -in high pressure tubing led from the jacket. The jacketed sample was then saturated with kerosene and placed in the hydraulic pressure cell as shown in Fig. 1. Movement of the mercury slug showed the change in pore volume of the sample under a given pressure change. Temperature was about 72" F for all measurements. Before taking any measurements, the external pressure on the sample was raised to 10,000 psig and kept there for several hours. This formed the thin copper jacket around the plug. 7-he pressure was then removed and the sample left at least overnight, during which time it recovered its original pore volume. An external pressure of 12,000 psig was then applied and held constant. The change in pore volume was noted as the internal pressure was raised in 1,000 psig increments to 10,000 psig. The internal pressure was then reduced to zero, again noting pore volume changes,

A progress report on the oil-shale and shale-oil processing research program at the U. s. Bureau of Mines Oil-Shale Demonstration Plant. Legislation providing for the program and aims are briefly noted. The remoteness and rugged nature of the terrain at the plant site are important factors in construction and operations. Large-scale units now in operation are the crushing plant and two 40-ton N-T-U retorts. These are described in detail. Under construction are several retorting pilot plants and a 200 bbl per day refinery. The refineiy incorporates several types of thermal operation, three-stage low-temperature acid treating, doctor sweetening and rerunning. Data are presented on typical N-T-U retort runs. Yields of 90 to loo pct of assay are realized on 30 gal to the ton shale with a retort cycle time of 18 hr. Data also are presented showing a comparison of a Mid-Continent petroleum and N-T-U shale oil. This comparison indicates that shale oil has a high pour point, low API gravity, and contains about 0.8 pct sulphur and 2 pct nitrogen. The naphtha fraction contains 3 pct tar acids, 9 pct tar bases and jo pct olefins. The problems involved in refining shale oil into usable products are discussed in detail. Introduction The Bureau of Mines oil-shale program now under way at Rifle, Colo., was begun in July 1944 under the provisions of the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act, which was passed in the spring of that year under the sponsorship of Senator Joseph C. O&apos;Ma-honey of Wyoming and Congressman Jennings Randolph of West Virginia, aided by Michael W. Straus, former Assistant Secretary of the Interior, and others. The oil-shale plant is only a part of the Office of Synthetic Liquid Fuels, Bureau of Mines, which has under way projects to develop synthetic liquid fuels from coal and other solid materials at Pittsburgh and Bruceton, Pa., Morgantown, W. Va., Louisiana, Mo., as well as the Petroleum and Oil-Shale Experiment Station at Laramie, Wyo., and the oil-shale demonstration plant at Rifle. The oil-shale program is entirely experimental. It is not intended that oil will be produced in great quantities. Production will be limited to the volume obtained from plant-scale experimental operations, which will be kept to the minimum size needed to develop techniques and processes and to demonstrate costs. After the passage of the enabling act in the summer of 1944 a survey of the oil-shale resources of the Nation was made to determine the most suitable general area in which to establish the demonstration plant. The most suitable area was found to be in the Rifle-De Bequearea in Garfield County, western Colorado. Bureau of Mines field parties covered this entire area thoroughly

SINCE Davenport and Bain&apos; introduced the isothermal transformation technique for the study of austenite decomposition in steels, a new field of investigation has opened up. Extensive research has been carried out on many different steels, but relatively little work has been done on eutectoid transformations in analogous alloy systems. The researches of Smith and Lindlief,² Mack,³ and Klier and Grymko²0 on the beta-phase transformation in copper-aluminum alloys, of Hibbard, Eichelrnan, and Saunders4 and Smith5 on the kappa-phase transformation in copper-silicon alloys, of Chaudron and Forester6 on the decomposition of "FeO," and of Wasserman7 on similarities between the iron-carbon, copper-aluminum, copper-tin, and copper-beryllium systems essentially comprise the field. The iron-nitrogen system, in view of its remarkable similarity to the iron-carbon system, is particularly attractive for the study of eutectoid decomposition. The present investigation is concerned with the study of isothermal transformation, proceeding by the familiar nucleation and growth processes, and of martensitic transformation characteristics of pure iron-nitrogen alloys. The kinetics of transformation and the morphology of the transformation products have been investigated, for these must be the factors determining the properties and behavior of the final product. The Iron-Nitrogen System he binary iron-nitrogen phase diagram has been a matter of considerable disagreement among vari01.1s investigators. However, the phase diagram according to Eisenhut and Kaupp8 and Lehrer10 is now considered essentially correct as reproduced in fig. 1. The important values, 2.35 pct nitrogen and 591°C, for the co-ordinates of the eutectoid point (obtained from this diagram and used in the re- search to be described) were confirmed in a concurrent study of Paranjpe, Cohen, Bever and Floe." The eutectoid decomposition involves the transformation of the ? face-centered cubic interstitial solid solution of nitrogen in iron to the a body-centered cubic interstitial solid solution of nitrogen in iron and the ?&apos; nitride of iron. This nitride is essentially the compound Fe,N; it also possesses a face-centered cubic lattice but a considerably larger one than the ?; the nitrogen atoms in ?&apos; are arranged in an ordered way in the centers of the unit cubes.8,10,11 A martensitic structure has also been reported8,12 in iron-nitrogen alloys and was studied in the research to be described here. Materials and Methods The specimens used in this investigation were prepared by nitriding "pure" iron. This iron was supplied by the Westinghouse Research Laboratories and is the product bearing their trade name "Puron"; it contains about 0.04 wt pct total impurities, the major portion of which is oxygen. ManY papers have been published during the last few years on the formation of cube texture in 3 1/4 pct Si-Fe, e.g., those of Assmus, Detert, Dunn, and Walter.1,5 All are concerned with the formation of the texture by a process involving secondary re-crystallization and the relative surface energies of (100) and other planes under certain conditions of annealing. The authors have found that cube texture can also be produced by heavily cold rolling strip in which the cube-on-edge texture has first been formed. Cube texture develops on annealing, but in this case it is not accompanied by secondary recrystallization. The starting material is a sintered compact, the preparation of which has been described elsewhere. Using a conventional processing schedule employed for producing commercial silicon-iron with the cube-on-edge texture, the sintered compact is cold rolled to such a thickness that, after annealing in pure hydrogen for 24 hr at 1350&apos;~ to produce the cube-on-edge texture, the final thickness required can be obtained by giving a further cold reduction of 85 pct. Cube texture is developed by annealing at -900~~ in pure hydrogen: it has been produced in strip up to 0.024 in. thick. The microstructure of the strip consists of a mass of small primary grains within the boundaries of the much larger secondary grains which ex- hibited cube-on-edge texture before the final cold roll. If the strip is annealed at -1000 after the 85pct reduction, secondary recrystallization begins to take place, provided a strong cube texture is present. On raising the temperature more secondaries grow, complete secondary recrystallization being obtained on annealing at -1150&apos;. From this it is concluded that the secondary crystals are produced by the texture inhibition mechanism: they show (110) and (111) planes in the surface of the strip, the former being the more numerous. It has been observed that the more perfect is the (110) [001] texture prior to cold rolling by 85 pct, the further from the ideal is the (100) [oo].] texture. A similar treatment applied to high quality commercial grain-oriented silicon-iron strip failed to produce cube texture. The tilt and rotation of the [loo] from the rolling direction was less than 10deg, but (to within a few degrees) the planes (130), (450) and (210) lay in the surface of the strip. In the past most of the research in pelletizing has as its aim the production of a physically strong pellet. Now that this problem is solved, more attention is being paid to uniformity in grade and chemical composition. Consideration has been given in recent years to a study of additives which will make pellets partially or fully fluxed. Blast furnace tests show fluxed pellets to have advantages over both fluxed sinter and acid pellets. Lower slag volumes are used more frequently in the blast furnace and the uniformity of the charge, both physically and chemically, is becoming increasingly important. A considerable improvement can be secured by having all of the flux uniformly distributed through the pellets in a calcined state. A fluxed pellet, therefore, should be a superior product. The use of an ore burden that contains an appropriate quantity of fluxing materials is not new to the blast furnace industry. For years the Minette ores of France and Germany, the Clinton ores of the Birmingham, Ala., areas, as well as others, which are low in iron but contain calcium carbonate in sufficient quantities to give them self-fluxing properties, have proven economical. The adaption of the sintering process to the preparation of ore burdens provided a means for artifically associating the fluxstone with the iron ore prior to charging to the blast furnace. In 1944 Torpl discussed the effects of using lime in sinter made in Sweden on the sinter&apos;s metallurgical performance in a blast furnace. Hessle2 reported in 1945 on the advantages of using lime in sinter to increase the sintering plants&apos; capacity and reduce fuel requirements. Robinson3 discussed the use of lime in Swedish sintering practice at the 1950 Blast Furnace, Coke Oven, and Raw Materials meeting. One of the suggested advantages was the combining of lime with silica to prevent the formation of a fayalite slag, which is difficult to reduce in the blast furnace. Nilson4 at the same meeting commented briefly on experimental work that had just started in the U. S. on the use of lime in sinter. The literature tends to indicate that most of this early work was directed towards improvement in sinter physical quality, and the fact that the feed to the blast furnace was partially fluxed was incidental. It was not long, however, before blast furnace advantages were being claimed. The matter was forcibly called to the attention of North American operators by reports of remarkable production records established by the Russians using fluxed sinter. The leading step was taken on this continent by the Steel Company of Canada in 1957; McMahon5 reported on the marked improvement in performance of an 18-ft blast furnace using fluxed sinter at its Hamilton works. Other North American operators quickly followed theStelco lead.

An extensive program for the establishment of creep data on high-nickel alloys has been in progress during the past seven years. This paper presents the accumulated data on two solid solution alloys, cold-drawn, annealed Monel and cold-drawn, annealed Inconel. Data on these two alloys in other conditions will be published at a later date. Monel, a nickel-copper alloy, is normally considered a corrosion-resistant material, but it will be shown that it also has considerable creep strength, validating its use at temperatures up to and including 900°F. Inconel, a nickel-chromium-iron alloy, is definitely a heat-resisting alloy possessing good creep strength and oxidation resistance up to iiooOF., and because of its oxidization resistance has been used successfully at much higher temperatures for lightly stressed parts. The literature contains but meager data on the creep properties of high-nickel alloys. Howevcr, Bennett and McAdam have presented a substantial quantity of creep data for cold-drawn Monel.1 The material as tested was not representative of mill production for it was cold-drawn to a reduction of area of 40 per cent as against 13 per cent, which is the mill standard for Monel. Twenty-two individual tests were run on each alloy in the investigation described in the following pages. The data and curves presented herein represent an integration of all the tests to obtain the most accurate picture of the creep properties of these alloys. Neither of the two alloys was found to be embrittled by the combination of temperature and stress, as evaluated by room-temperature tensile and impact tests that were made following creep testing. These data indicate that no tendency toward embrittlement exists. It is recommended that 6300 lb. per sq. in. be used as a working stress for cold-drawn, annealed Monel at 900°F. and 13,200 lb. per sq. in. for cold-drawn, annealed Inconel at the same temperature. Table 8 lists recommended working stresses, based on 80 per cent of the stress to produce a minimum creep rate of 0.01 per cent per 1000 hr., for Monel and some steels. Equipment The equipment used for these tests consists of Colville creep-testing machines manufactured by the Tinius Olsen Testing Machine Co. The load is adjusted, depending on the stress level, to give an error in the stress of not more than ± 0.1 per cent. This is based on considerations of lever sensitivity and the stress used for the standard (A.S.T.M. Tentative Standard E22-38T) 0.505-in. diameter creep specimen having a 2-in. gauge length. The eutectic morphology is influenced by the presence of lhree-nned dendrites 0-f MgzZn11 which may conlrol /he rricroslrccture by acting as nuclealion sites. In recent years there has been much interest in eutectic solidification and several theories have been proposed. One of the confusing factors is the existence of various morphologies in which the solidified phases may form. The lamellar microstructure seems to be most common in metal eutectics, and it has been claimed&apos; that all regular eutectics should be lamellar if sufficiently pure. However, there still remain eutectic alloys which are not lamellar or which change their morphology as a function of growth conditions. The eutectic between zinc and the intermetallic phase Mg2Znll was chosen for this investigation because it has been found to solidify in more than one morphology. The diagram in anssen&apos; locates the eutectic point at 3.0 wt pct Mg and 367°C. lliott gives 364°C as the eutectic temperature, leaving the phase compositions unaltered. Since the growth conditions determine the micro-structure of the solidified alloy, the factors controlling the transition from one morphology to another could be studied. The lamellae to rods transition is of particular interest. PROCEDURE Alloys were prepared from carefully weighed portions of 99.999 pct Zn and 99.97 pct Mg by melting in Pyrex containers under argon and casting into graphite boats. The resulting ingots were remelted under argon and solidified unidirectionally in a horizontal tube furnace at growth rates ranging from 2.0 to more than 50 cm per hr under a temperature gradient, measured over a 5-cm length, of 9" to 14°C per cm. The solid-liquid interface appeared to be planar at all growth rates although no attempt was made to confirm this by decantation or quenching. A few ingots were allowed to freeze uncontrolled. Most alloys were of the nominal eutectic composition, 3.0 wt pct Mg according to Hansen2 and lliott, but some contained as much as 3.35 wt pct Mg. Chemical analyses were not run since metallographic examination confirmed that the desired composition was achieved. Specimens were cut from the middle portion of the ingot normal to the growth axis, polished mechanically, and etched with 2 pct Nital. Suitable areas were selected for the determination of crystallographic orientation relationships by a tiontechniqueof described previously by one of the authors.4 The (2310) planes of zinc and the (8701, {944}? (1032) planes of Mg2Znll were found suitable for orientation determination; experimental error was on the order of 2 or 3 deg. RESULTS Three different morphologies were found in the unidirectionally solidified alloys: lamellar eutectic, rod-like eutectic, and a structure whose most predominant characteristic was the presence of three-vaned (cellular) dendrites of Mg2Znll. These dendrites were only found in alloys with more than the eutectic amount of magnesium. In some ingots fine hexagonal needles of Mg2Znll surrounding a core of MgZn2 were observed. They were probably due to incomplete alloying and seemed to have no effect on the eutectic morphology. In addition hexagonal spirals like those discussed by Fullman and wood5 and Hunt and acksonh ere observed in some ingots frozen without directional control. Both MgZZn,, and MgZnz were detected by X-ray diffraction in these alloys. Since the morphology could not be grown unidirectionally and no characteristic orientation relationship between the phases was found, further study was limited to the lamellar: rodlike, and three-vaned dendrite morphologies. Alloys of Eutectic Composition, No Dendrites. The mcrostructures of allovs with no three-vaned dendrites were either lamellar or rodlike depending on the growth rate. At rates below 10 cm per hr the morphology was lamellar, consisting of two sets of parallel plates intersecting at about 54 deg like the Mg-MgzSn eutectic described by raft.7 At growth rates faster than 14 cm per hr the microstructure showed rods of zinc in a matrix of MgnZnll, while intermediate rates yielded mixtures of rods and lamellae in small groups. The lamellar "grains" were often several millimeters in cross section, but contained small irregular areas which divided each grain into perfect islands 100 or 200 p in diam. Lamellae were parallel to each other throughout the grain in spite of these defects in the structure, Fig. 1. Rods, on the other hand, could only be produced in small groups arranged like fish scales and separated by irregular areas of appreciable thickness, Fig. 2. At growth rates slower than about 10 cm per hr the dendrites were separated from each other by small areas of both lamellar and rod eutectic, Fig. 3.

An analysis of indexing is given for an idealized plastic rock. Indexing refers to chipping from a bit tooth to a previously formed crater. A method is indicated for computing the dependence of chip size and shape as well as force on the tooth for various tooth shapes as a function of crater configuration and distance to the previous crater. Pressure on the tooth is found to vary with depth of penetration after a critical depth has been reached. Damp sand model experiments indicate that simple solutions using linear and logarithmic spiral slip-line fields for Coulomb plastic materials give reasonable approximations to the failure patterns. Both idealized roller cone bits and fixed blade or drag bits are considered, and methods are presented for approximating the force on the bit and the chip volume when the rock is subjected to sufficiently high pressure to behave plastically. One of the primary objectives of drilling research investigations is to develop theoretical equations which can be used to predict the behavior of rock under drilling loading conditions. Since rocks usually fail in a brittle manner at atmospheric conditions, much current research is directed to studies of the brittle failure of rock under the action of drilling too1s. 1,2 The results of triaxial test on rocks indicate that both rock strength and ductility increase at high confining pressures.3 Recent results from single bit-tooth indentation experiments on dry rocks indicate that the transition from brittle to ductile failure under a bit tooth can occur at pressures sufficiently low to be of interest in oil well drilling.4 Single bit tooth experiments and analyses are not directly applicable to the drilling process since one of the important facets in drilling is the interaction between a bit-tooth and the previously formed crater. This interaction is referred to as indexing.&apos; The purpose of the present paper is to indicate how plasticity theory can be applied to the analysis of indexing for plastic rock. Drag bit or fixed-blade drilling is considered and a discussion is given of the drilling action of an idealized roller cone bit. Results of simple experimental studies using a damp sand model are given as a method of visualizing the failure patterns in rocks under high confining pressures. These results are compared with plasticity theory using simple solutions based on linear and logarithmic spiral slip-lines. Discontinuous stress fields are proposed for drag bit drilling based upon the soil mechanics analysis of Shields. SINGLE BIT TOOTH RESULTS Single bit tooth indentation experiments using dry rocks under pressures from 0 to 5000 psi have indicated a correlation between the shape of a force-displacement curve and the nature of the rock failure beneath the tool.4 Continuous linear curves are in-

PILOT-PLANT tests have demonstrated that it is possible to produce low-sulphur sponge iron (0.03 to 0.05 per cent sulphur) as a continuous process in an internally fired rotary kiln from iron ore or mill scale; a solid carbonaceous reducing agent; and dolomite to control the sulphur content. The proportion of dolomite employed is small, so that it does not add materially to the cost of the sponge iron. The entire operation is carried out at temperatures well below the melting point of iron, so that the product is discharged in granular form. Compared with other methods for the production of sponge iron, the rotary-kiln method has the advantage of simplicity and low cost of equipment and; in addition, requires little labor for the operation of the process. The pilot-plant equipment used for this work was sufficiently large to demonstrate that the production of low-sulphur sponge iron in rotary kilns is feasible and that the costs are not excessive for applications in which sponge iron has distinct advantages over competing materials. This report constitutes a part of a program by the Bureau of Mines under a special Congressional appropriation for studying gaseous and solid fuel reduction of iron ores. Numerous articles on various phases of these investigations have appeared in Bureau of Mines publications or technical journals. Other articles are being prepared and will be published in the near future. The present program, which is under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, Assistant Director of the Bureau of Mines, was initiated in .1942. However, a considerable portion of the work was a continuation of previous research performed by the Bureau. Previous investigators1-4 utilizing the rotary kiln for the production of sponge iron did not develop a suitable method for controlling the sulphur content. A review of the literature shows that the sulphur content in the product usually exceeded 0.2 -per cent unless reducing agents with very low sulphur contents were employed. This high sulphur value made the product generally undesirable for use as melting stock in electric or open-hearth furnaces. The production of sponge iron in an internally fired rotary kiln has been described in detail in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 2702; consequently, this article will be confined mostly to new features of the process-that is, means for controlling the sulphur content of the sponge iron. Suitable raw materials include iron ores or mill scale; coal or coke for reducing them, and sized dolomite (-20+100-mesh) as the sulphur-controlling agent. A mixture of the raw materials in granular form is fed into the elevated end of the kiln, which is fired axially from the lower or discharge end. "Bill," as he is generally called, was born in New York City in 1883, and graduated from the department of geology at Syracuse University in 1909 with a Ph.B. degree. Immediately he joined the U. S. Geological Survey, where he established an enviable record during the next eleven years. While with the Survey he acted variously as chairman, chief, and advisory engineer for a variety of Governmental bodies, many concerned with power.

THE physical and chemical structure of the oxide films formed on metals and alloys is of interest in our understanding of their protective properties. According to Pilling and Bedworth,1 if the specific volume of the oxide is equal to or greater than that of the metal, a compact or continuous structure results; if the volume of the oxide is less, a cellular or porous structure forms. With the cellular type of coating the surface layer of oxide offers no impedance to oxidation; at a given temperature the rate of oxidation is quite constant. On the other hand, the compact type of coating acts as an effective barrier to oxygen and the rate of oxidation will follow a parabolic law. The recent work of Gulbransen2 and of Leontis and Rhines3 on the oxidation of magnesium indicates that it is not necessary for the volume of the oxide to be greater than that of the metal in order that the oxidation may follow a parabolic rate law. One exception to the rule of Pilling and Bedworth&apos; is noted by Scheil;4 namely, tungsten. At 500° and 700°C long-time oxidations indicate a linear rate law with time. However, Dunn&apos;s5 oxidation measurements from 700° to 1000°C indicate that a parabolic rate law is followed. The oxide is mainly yellow W03 with a thin layer of the blue oxide. Preliminary results on the oxidation of tungsten6 in the temperature range 400° to 500°C indicate that the oxidation does proceed according to a parabolic rate law. Irrespective of the actual rate law that tungsten may obey, it is of interest to compare the results obtained on the oxidation of tungsten in the thin film region with those found when the metal is scaling. A time-temperature study of the oxides formed on both molybdenum and tungsten may indicate whether there exist any peculiarities in the oxide structures of the thin film region compared with those of the scaling region of oxidation. In a recent paper the authors&apos; presented an investigation of the structures of the oxide films formed on the metals iron, cobalt, nickel, chromium and copper. The results of these studies are presented in graphical form as existence diagrams of the oxides on a time-temperature scale. The existence diagrams of the oxides occurring on some of the metals are simple and show few chemical transitions, but there are many cases in which the physical state of the oxide surface changes as a function of time and temperature, as evidenced by the appearance or disappearance of orientation effects and sharpness of patterns. Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate, has a history of usefulness to man dating back several thousand years, and a worldwide industry has been built on the mining and processing of this versatile industrial mineral. However, anhydrite, the other principal calcium sulfate mineral has very limited use, so much so that separate statistics for it are not always kept, but are usually included with those for gypsum. Although often found in close association, the two minerals have important chemical differences in that anhydrite is the anhydrous form of calcium sulfate (CaSO,) whereas gypsum is the dihydrate (CAS0;2H20). These two molecules of combined water result in significant differences in hardness, density, and solubility of the two minerals. However, of most importance is the difference in thermal properties wherein gypsum, upon the application of a modest amount of heat, can be converted to the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate (CaS0;Vi H,O) or plaster of paris, an intermediate product upon which is based over 90% of the value of all calcium sulfate end products. Anhydrite, on the other hand, is inert at these temperatures and its uses have been limited to only those few cases where calcium sulfate in the anhydrous form may have an advantage. The earliest known use of gypsum plaster dates back some 5000 years to the time of the Pharaohs of Egypt who had discovered that gypsum rock, when exposed to fire, broke down into a powder which when mixed with water would form a putty that could be "plastered" on a rough mud brick or stone wall to make a smooth finish. It was used down through the centuries in a limited way for ornamental purposes, but did not achieve wide acceptance because of its quick (25 to 30 min) setting or hardening time which made it difficult to use. The first real understanding of gypsum chemistry was developed in France about 1755, and the gradual growth of its present utilization dates from that time. In the United States, the first utilization of gypsum was to grind it to a fine material for use as a soil conditioner at about the time of the Revolutionary War, and the term "land plaster" for ground gypsum has remained in use. Another cementituous material-lime or calcium oxide-had become the usual plastering material, but by about 1870 a method for retarding the set of gypsum plaster was discovered and it has today almost completely replaced lime as a plastering material. In recent years, gypsum products sold in the United States have reached a total valuation of approximately $500 million per year as illustrated in [Table 1].

The study of the creep of metals under conditions of prolonged loading has received the attention of many investigators for several years and almost innumerable papers have been published on the various aspects of the subject. As it appeared that much could still be learned from a study of single crystals, the present work was carried out to study the effects of temperature and conditions of loading upon the properties and deformation in tension of single crystals of alpha brass containing about 70 per cent copper and go per cent zinc. In particular, it was hoped to obtain information from tests below and above the recrys-tallization temperature of the material, so that properties such as elastic limit, yield point or critical stress, and manner of deformation might be compared for tensile tests at an ordinary loading rate and for prolonged loading. Accordingly, short-time tensile tests and creep tests were made at room temperature, 300°, 500° and 700°F. The two latter temperatures are above the lowest possible recrystallization temperature of polycrys-talline 70-30 brass. Previous Work Clarke and White1 have made creep tests of some copper-zinc alloys, including 70-30 brass, and copper-zinc-tin alloys at temperatures both below and above the recrystallization temperature of the materials considered. Hanson and Wheeler2 have studied the flow and fracture of single crystals of aluminum for short-time and prolonged tensile loading over a range of temperature extending from room temperature to 400°F., their experiments being made without consideration of the orientations of the test specimens. Extensive creep and fracture tests on single crystals of lead at room temperature have been made by Betty3 and by Baker, Betty and Moore." Results of the last-named investigation were published while the present work was in progress. Miller5 examined the elastic limit of zinc single crystals at and above room temperature by means of creep tests, while Miller and Milligan6 reported the results of tests designed to show the influence of temperature on elastic limit of single crystals of aluminum, silver and zinc. The behavior of iron crystals under static tensile loading at room temperature was reported by Gensamer and Meh17 while the present investigation was in progress. Their specimens exhibited a well-defined yield point, below which no appreciable creep could be detected. The manner of yielding proved interesting, as the shape of the creep-time curve for the iron crystals differed from the common type of crcep curves. Elongation did not begin immediately, or at least was initially very slow. The rate of elongation then increased continuously and finally decreased to zero. This S-shaped type of elongation-time
