We of the employer class represent labor in the social organization and in industry just as truly as do those who labor only with their hands, and, because our labor is chiefly with our brains, the duty is all the more imposed upon us to use those gifts in which we excel in helping steer a clear course through the turbulent waters in which we are now enmeshed. Only their selfish engrossment in the daily tasks they were employed to perform could possibly have permitted the great majority of the intelligent and industrious German people to become terrorized by a handful of the idle, the vicious, and the criminal, whom the elections to the National Assembly showed to be in as pitiful a minority as they are in Russia, in this, and in other countries. It is the leisure unemployment of the I.W.W.'s, the Bolsheviki, and the Sparticans that has enabled them to devote their whole time to a concerted and aggressive struggle against the great majority of those of the world's workers who are unorganized, and who are therefore even in opposition one to the other. In union there is strength, and this was never better illustrated than by these conditions. The great fallacy of our previous attitude toward social and industrial problems has been the belief that labor, by which we commonly mean organized or physical labor, is something antagonistic to and having a different object in life from that great body of unorganized laborers who work with their brains. Our difficulty has been our lack of will or opportunity to think. The hurry of our daily struggle to earn our livelihood under the nerve-racking pressure of modern civilization has left us no opportunity for quiet thought and study. The physical laborer, and above all the laborer in the mines, on the other hand, has all his hours of toil in which to think over, in all their varied aspects, those problems that concern his immediate, personal well-being. As a result he has arrived at perhaps a more true appreciation of the facts of life in their relation to social and industrial conditions than we. Have we not too readily adopted the view that, as the managers of industry under the direction of capital, it has been our duty to think and act in opposition to labor, rather than to realize that we also are laborers, have like aspirations, and should participate in a free and aggressive solution of these problems rather than leave their solution

Recent work by the authors1 established the constitutional diagram of the gold-germanium system. Of particular interest in the simple euctectiferous system was the eutectic alloy at 12 per cent Ge, which melted at the very low temperature of 356°C and had an unusually fine eutectic structure. It was of interest to investigate the effect of third components on the melting point, microstructure, and strength of this alloy, and in this work the effect of copper is discussed rather completely, with less complete data on the effects of silver, platinum, nickel, and zinc. No reference in the literature has been found on ternary systems with gold-germanium. Materials and Alloying -4s in the work on the binary system, gold-germanium, the germanium used in this investigation was the cyanide-reduced, 99.9 per cent product, produced by the Eagle-Picher Co. Fine gold sheet from Handy and Harmon, pure platinum sheet from the American Platinum Works, copper magnet wire from Anaconda, nickel wire assaying 99.6 per cent Ni. and electrolytic zinc were used for alloying. To make the alloys, charges of the pure metals were put in a graphite crucible and melted in an atmosphere of pure hydrogen. The temperature was brought up to about I050 C, and the metal allowed to freeze in the crucible. Except with alloys containing zinc, melting losses were consistently less than a few milligrams. When zinc was a component, weight losses up to half the weight of the zinc present were incurred, and the alloy compositions were calculated by assuming the entire weight loss to be that of zinc. In all other cases the composition of the alloys could safely be taken as that of the charge. The ingots, as solidified, were segregated, the heavier primary phases being at the bottom and sides of the ingots and the lighter primary phases at the top, but by sectioning the entire ingot vertically for microscopic examination, this factor could be evaluated. Ingots for microscopic examination weighed one gram, and those for thermal analysis weighed three grams. Thermal Analysis In this work, the eutectic line composition and thermal arrests were desired, and, after microscopic exploration had established the position of the eutectic line at a given percentage of the third component, a thermal analysis was run at that composition. The method of thermal analysis used in the work on the binary Au-Ge system,' a method particularly well suited for a small quantity of material, was used in this work. COMPA[N]IA Minera de Penoles, S. A., at its Avalos unit operates a lead-zinc concentrator having a capacity of about 600 short tons per day. Lead and zinc concentrates are made by flotation methods. The concentrator is at Terminal de Providencia, in the state of Zacatecas, some 70 miles south of Saltillo, Coahuila. The Pe[n]oles-Avalos railroad operating between the plant and Estacion Avalos, a distance of 6 miles, makes connections with the Coahuila and Zacatecas railroad, which in turn connects with the Nacionales de Mexico at Saltillo. The three railroads are each of different gauge, requiring the transfer of all supplies and concentrates at each junction. The mill operates on company ores, on ores from leased mines, and as a custom mill. The custom business is very small. The lead concentrates are shipped to company smelters at Monterrey, Nuevo Leon and Torréon, Coahuila. Since the European war, all zinc concentrates have been shipped to the United States. ORE TREATED The major source of ore supply is a group of four mines owned or leased by the company, some three miles south of the mill in the mountains, from which the ore is delivered to the mill by a gravity aerial tramway. Custom ore comes in by rail. The ores occur in chimneys. The upper levels contained oxidized siliceous ores of lead, copper, silver and gold, with varying amounts of zinc. These ores were direct-smelted. In the first two years of operation a good deal of the tailing loss was caused by the oxidized content of the ores milled. Much of the ore in the transition zones between the oxides and sulphides was not mined. The ores now being milled are clean, hard sulphides in a limestone gangue, with only occasional contamination of oxides. The lead and zinc sulphides are of coarse structure and are freed even above flotation sizes. The galena is usually "steel" colored, easily and quickly floated. When there is any oxidation, it is usually on the coarsest crystals. The zinc minerals vary a good deal in color; a resin sphalerite predominates but there are varying shades of brown marmatites. On an average, the zinc sulphides contain 64 per cent zinc. The only common copper mineral is chalcopyrite. Little is known of the occurrence of gold and silver. Waste minerals are mainly limestone and pyrite, both of which are barren. The ores vary from 20 to 35 per cent pyrite. A deep well injection system is used by The Anaconda Co. for the disposal of uranium mill tailing water near Grants, N. M. A 2511-ft hole was cored and tested through Triassic, Permian, and Pennsylvanian (?) sediments and bottomed in Precambrian granite gneiss. The disposal well was plugged back to 1830 ft and completed in 563 ft of sandstones in the Yeso formation. The reservoir sandstones contain water similar to the injected waste water, and are isolated from overlying fresh-water aquifers by an evaporite barrier zone. Mill tailing water is decanted, filtered, and introduced into the well by gravity at an average rate of 400 gpm. The reservoir has a life expectancy of 10 years. The Anaconda Co. began uranium milling operations near Grants, N. M. in 1953 with a small mill that processed limestone ores. A larger second mill was built in 1955 to treat sandstone ores. In 1956 it became apparent that a large tailing pond would be required to contain the increased discharge of mill waste water. Research was begun on supplementary methods of disposal by which a minimal pond size could be maintained to avert excessive seepage losses. An intensive sampling program was begun to monitor the fresh-water wells in the area. The original limestone mill ceased operation in 1959. The present mill treats sandstone ores by sulfuric acid leach and a resin-in-pulp ion exchange recovery circuit that uses chloride elution. Process waste water is discharged to a tailing pond where, after evaporation losses, an annual average of about 400 gpm are available for injection into the disposal well. The waste water is a mildly acid solution that contains large amounts of manganese, iron, and the sulfate and chloride salts of sodium, calcium, and magnesium. It is a low-level radioactive fluid that contains small amounts of Uranium-natural, Thorium-230, and Radium-226. The average chemical and radioactive analyses of the waste water injected into the disposal well are shown in Column B of Table I. Disposal of the excess mill waste water by deep well injection was investigated after extensive research had proved that alternate methods were not satisfactory. A study of the regional geology and hydrology indicated that a disposal well was feasible, and a test well to basement rock was planned. I desire to call the attention of the Institute to a novel system of dredging which, it seems to me, may prove applicable, not only to river and harbor improvements, but also to certain varieties at 1east of alluvial and diluvial gold mining; that is, river-mining, barmining, coast-mining, and any other similar operations now carried on by means of coffer-dams or dredging machines. The simple and effective method to which I refer is the invention of General Roy Stone, formerly an officer of volunteers, and at present a civil engineer, engaged under General Newton, of the United States Engineer Corps, upon the government works in New York harbor. General Stone has been, since September, 1878, in charge of operations upon Diamond Reef. This reef, lying between Governor's Island and the Battery, is one of the most dangerous in the harbor. Its position in the highway of navigation, and the fact that it is dangerous only to vessels of considerable draught and at certain stages of the tide, combine to increase the serious nature of the disasters which it has caused. The reef consists partly of rock in place, and partly of deposits of glacial clay, boulders, and pebbles, over all of which lies, or did lie until it was removed, the ordinary silt and rubbish of the harbor. As the purpose of the present paper has nothing to do with the special dimensions and other circamstances of this particular work, I describe those features only which are connected with General Stone's ingenious device. Various attempts have been made to remove the upper portion of Diamond Reef and secure a navigable depth at low tide. Some years ago Maillefert undertook to accomplish this by firing charges of high explosives, simply laid upon the surface. He accomplished some good in the removal of projecting points and ridges; but as soon as the surface of the reef had become approximately level, his method was no longer effective. After the work had been taken up by the Engineer Corps, the well-known drilling-scow invented by General Newton was brought into action; and, SO long as holes could be bored and fired in solid rock, this process was effective enough. A summary of- several recent investigations in to the properties of the metal-oxide-silicon system is presented. A major portion of these studies makes use of the MOS capacitance-z)oltage method of' analysis. The particular areas of investigation which are reported include: 1) a general survey of the electvical properties of thermally oxidized silicon surjbccs; 2) a study of ion migration through silicon dioxide films ; 3) measurements of electron and hole mobilities in surface inversion layers; 4) a study of impurity redistribution due to thermal o.ridatiotz; and 5) measurements of the rates of oxidation oj-heavily doper7. silicon. THE importance of the metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) system in the semiconductor industry is well-known. In addition to its importance in the "planar" device technology,' the MOS structure is now also used in the fabrication of active solid-state devices. Consequently, extensive efforts have been made recently to obtain a better understanding of the characteristics of this system. A summary of some studies of the MOS system conducted in our laboratories during the past year is presented. For the most part these studies used silicon as the semiconductor, along with silicon dioxide and aluminum as the other two components of the system. Since the MOS capacitance-voltage method of analysis was used extensively in these studies, we will first briefly describe its nature and consider some of the possible causes of deviation of experimental observations from the simple theory. We will then outline the various related areas of investigation carried out in our laboratories and will briefly indicate some of the results. It should be noted that the purpose of this paper is merely to provide a brief summary of MOS studies. More detailed discussions of the various areas of investigation are given in the references cited. PRINCIPLES OF THE MOS C-V METHOD OF ANALYSIS' A sketch of the MOS structure is shown in the upper portion of Fig. 1. In this case the insulating film is Si02 and the semiconductor p-type silicon. If a large negative bias is applied to the metal field plate, holes are attracted to the silicon surface. The silicon then behaves much like a metal and the capacitance measured is that of the oxide layer alone, Co. If a small positive bias is applied to the aluminum, holes are repelled and a region depleted of majority carriers is formed at the silicon surface. This depletion I-egion adds to the width of the dielectric and the measured capacitance begins to drop. With increasing positive bias, the width of the electrical depletion region increases. At some large positive bias an inzevsion regiotr is formed at the surface and additional charges induced in the silicon appear in the form of electrons in this narrow inversion region. Thus the depletion-region width approaches a maximum value and, consequently, the capacitance reaches a minimum value and then either levels off or rises again depending on the measurement frequency and the rate of equilibration of the minority carriers in the inversion layer.3 Band diagrams, along with the corresponding charge distributions, are shown in Fig. 1 for the above bias conditions. If minority carriers cannot accumulate at the surface to form an inversion region, the depletion-region width continues to increase with increased positive bias and the capacitance drops toward zero as in a reverse biased p-n junction. The effect of a work-function difference $hs between the metal and the silicon, and of surface charges per unit area Qss located at the oxide-silicon interface, is simply to attract charges in the silicon much like the applied bias. It can be shown that this results in a parallel shift of the capacitance-voltage characteristic along the voltage axis by an amount corresponding to AV = -$bIs + Qss/Co. Theoretical curves have been calculated4 giving the capacitance of the MOS structure C normalized to the oxide capacitance Co vs the quantity VG here VG is the voltage applied to the metal field plate. In Fig. 2 such calculations are shown as points for a particular oxide thickness and bulk impurity concentration for a p-type semiconductor. (For an n-type semiconductor the curves would be mirror images of these.) All three cases, i.e., low frequency. high frequency, and depletion, are indicated. Also shown in the figure are recorder tracings of the characteristics of actual devices. These characteristics have been shifted along the voltage axis to compensate the effect of surface charges and work-function difference. This paper deals with the origin, definition and prevention of scabs on semifinished rolled-steel product. Mold coatings, which are considered essential in scab prevention, were found to be effective only in relation to the ingot surface of semikilled and killed steels and not necessary for the rolled product. That is to say, the scabs on ingots caused by having been cast in uncoated molds are eliminated in the soaking and rolling operations, therefore are not present on the rolled product. This fact, which is contrary to the average opinion, was established after extensive and thorough experiments had proved the ordinary conception of the origin of scabs to be incorrect. This subject may be of little or no concern to steel plants producing small ingots for the manufacture of small billets and bars, except as it may be of interest in showing why their surface troubles with scabs do not exist on the product of heats with normal pouring practice. But to the producer of large ingots to be rolled into slabs for large plates used in shipbuilding, it is a very important subject. Definition of a Scab The generally accepted opinion is that the individual scabs present on rolled products (as shown by Fig. I) are considered to have been individual splashes on the ingot surface. This opinion was found to be incorrect. Experiments showed that there were no individual scabs on the product that had appeared as individuals on the ingot surface. The single scabs seen are either pieces of a shell that is present near the bottom of all top-cast ingots, or a veneer that may be present on any part of an ingot improperly poured, as when the stream strikes the mold wall. This definition is based on a detailed study of scabs and their characteristics in which the following have been found true: Location.—On the product of heats poured without trouble, scabs, if present, are always on the product that corresponds to the bottom end of the ingot, and usually occur in clusters. This is true whether molds are coated or not. Shape.—There is no regularity as to shape, size or thickness. It is sometimes possible to separate a few pieces and place them together, like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, indicating that at one time they had been united as one piece. If individual splashes were the origin of scabs, the foregoing would not be true. Instead, the splashes, which occur throughout the pouring of the ingots, would be present uniformly over the entire product and there would be considerable similarity in the shape and thickness of the scabs. Experimental Work Our experimental work was conducted on 200-ton heats of semikilled plate steel tapped into an oval ladle 15 ft. high. Definition of a Scab The generally accepted opinion is that the individual scabs present on rolled products (as shown by Fig. I) are considered to have been individual splashes on the ingot surface. This opinion was found to be incorrect. Experiments showed that there were no individual scabs on the product that had appeared as individuals on the ingot surface. The single scabs seen are either pieces of a shell that is present near the bottom of all top-cast ingots, or a veneer that may be present on any part of an ingot improperly poured, as when the stream strikes the mold wall. This definition is based on a detailed study of scabs and their characteristics in which the following have been found true: Location.—On the product of heats poured without trouble, scabs, if present, are always on the product that corresponds to the bottom end of the ingot, and usually occur in clusters. This is true whether molds are coated or not. Shape.—There is no regularity as to shape, size or thickness. It is sometimes possible to separate a few pieces and place them together, like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, indicating that at one time they had been united as one piece. If individual splashes were the origin of scabs, the foregoing would not be true. Instead, the splashes, which occur throughout the pouring of the ingots, would be present uniformly over the entire product and there would be considerable similarity in the shape and thickness of the scabs. Experimental Work Our experimental work was conducted on 200-ton heats of semikilled plate steel tapped into an oval ladle 15 ft. high. THE claim is made in a number of patents1,2,3,4 that some compounds of the class known as aryl sulphides have collector properties. One of these patents generalizes the claim to include all aryl sulphides, whose generic formula is R-S¬R[=]-R’ (where x = r,2, . . . ), with the restriction that if the aromatic radicals R, R' contain substituent groups these groups may not contain nitrogen or oxygen. Moses, Hess, and Perkins cite as evidence for their claims the results of flotation tests on Anaconda and Miami copper ores using Biphenyl sulphide, ditolyl disulphide and dinapthyl disulphide as collectors. The use of alkyl sulphides as collectors has also been reported5 with the conclusion that the alkyl sulphides are better collectors than the corresponding aryl sulphides. The experimental work cited appears to confirm this contention. In order to test these claims with respect to diphenyl sulphide, a sample, purchased from the Eastman Kodak Co., was tested against Anaconda ore. The procedure followed was that of Moses, Hess, and Perkins. A sample of ore weighing 500 grams was placed in a laboratory ball mill. To this was added 220 grams of water, 0.06 grams of commercial diphenyl sulphide (1/4 lb. per ton of ore), and 0.8 grams of lime (3 lb. per ton of ore). The material was ground until 93 per cent passed a 65mesh screen. This pulp was diluted to 16 per cent solids. A sample of the diluted pulp was placed in a Minerals Separation type of laboratory flotation cell. After a 2-min. agitation period, pine oil was added and the froth collected for a period of 15 min. This test recovered 68 per cent of the copper, with a ratio of concentration of 6.8: 1. The tailing assay was 0.3 per cent Cu. Moses, Hess and Perkins attained a recovery of 75 per cent, with a ratio concentration of 12: 1. Although these results do not compare too well with those of Moses, Hess and Perkins, subsequent tests showed an improvement, as judged by vanning of the tails. It is concluded, therefore, that the patent results are confirmed. CONTACT-ANGLE TESTS In order to study the response of the various minerals, found in Anaconda ore, to commercial diphenyl sulphide, some contact-angle tests were made. Polished particles of bornite, chalcocite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and quartz were conditioned for 15 min. in a suspension of diphenyl sulphide in water. The concentration of this suspension was 0.284 grams per liter, this being the concentration of this reagent in the ball mill. The conditioned particles were rinsed with water (not rubbed with filter paper or boiled linen) and then tested against an air bubble in the bubble machine, with the following results: born-

The phases occurring in the V-Mn system were studied by means of X-yay diffraction and metallo-paphic techniques, using are-melted alloy specimens annealed in the temperature range 800° to 1150°C and quenched. The bcc solid solution extends at 1250°C all the way from vanadium to 6-manganese. Below 1050°C the a-phase is formed, and the terminal a-manganese phase is stabilized up to about 900°C by vanadium in solid solution. IN the only previous general survey of the V-Mn system Cornelius, Bungardt and Schiedtl reported the existence of three intermediate phases corresponding to the approximate compositions VMn,, VMn, and V5Mn. The phase VMn8 has recently been identified as a o phase2 but the alloy VMn was found to have a bcc structure2 corresponding apparently to the vanadium solid solution rather than to the large cubic unit cell reported by Cornelius et al. 1 Subsequent work by Rostoker and Yamamoto3 has shown that the vanadium-base bcc solid solution extends to at least 15 pct Mn at 900°C. An alloy corresponding to the composition VMn, was examined by Elliott,4 who reported that the as-cast sample as well as samples annealed at 1200o and 1300°C had bcc structures, but that annealing at 1000°, 800") and 600°C produced two phases. One of these phases was apparently the bcc solid solution and the other resembled the o phase structure. Hellawell and Hume-Rothery5 established the phase relationships in manganese-rich alloys above 1000°C, and showed that the o phase in this system is replaced by the 6 Mn (bcc) solid solution at temperatures above 1050°C. These results suggest that a continuous bcc solid solution may exist above 1050°C between vanadium and 6 Mn. The present investigation was undertaken in order to develop more complete information in regard to this system. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The alloys used in the present work were prepared by arc-melting electrolytic manganese having a minimum purity of 99.9 pct and vanadium lumps with a purity of 99.7 pct. The major impurities present in these metals were carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen and this would account for the small percentage of nonmetallic inclusions observed metal-lographically. The arc-melting was at first performed under a helium atmosphere and it was necessary to keep the melting times as short as possible in order to minimize the loss of manganese by vaporization. It was later found that the evaporation of manganese was considerably reduced when the melting was done under argon atmosphere. The final composition of each alloy was calculated by assuming that the total weight loss during melting was due to evaporation of manganese. Compositions which were calculated in this manner agreed reasonably well with the results of chemical analysis, as shown in Table I. Spectrographic analysis revealed the presence of contamination by tungsten, but in no case was the percentage of tungsten greater then 0.4 at. pct. The specimens were in each case broken in half and the fractured section was examined visually and microscopically for evidence of inhomogeneity. Each specimen was homogenized at temperatures near l100°C, as shown in Table I. After this treatment most specimens consisted of large columnar grains of the bcc vanadium solid solution. The etchant used in most of the metallographic work consisted of 20 pct nitric acid, 20 pct hydro-flouric acid, and 60 pct glycerine. It was found that this etchant would clearly delineate the phases present in these alloys although it does not produce any striking contrast between the phases. For certain manganese-rich alloys, a 1 pct aqueous solution of nitric acid was used. This etchant gave a brown color to the a-manganese phase, whereas the o phase was virtually unattacked and appeared very light as shown in Fig. 1. The etchants used by Cornelius et a1.l were found to produce spurious effects in some of these alloys. In particular, the vanadium-rich alloys etched in hot sulfuric acid often appeared to consist of two phases when both X-ray diffraction and etching with the glycerine-acid mixture indicated the presence of single phase bcc solid solution. A few percent of what appears to be an oxide or nitride phase was found at the grain boundaries and in the interior of the grains, especially in the vanadium-rich alloys. All alloys were annealed in sealed silica tubes containing 1 atm of pure argon and these tubes were then quenched in cold water. Although some manganese loss occurred during annealing, the loss seemed to be confined to the surface of the speci-

The effect of hydrogen on the ductility, c, of SAE 1020 steel at strain rates, i, from 0.05 in. per in. per rnin to 19,000 in. per in. per rnin and at temperature, T, from +150° to —320°F was determined. THE purpose of this investigation was a fuller A characterization of this of the investigation effects of varying temperature and strain rate on the fracture strain of hydrogen-charged steel. To be sure, it is known that low and high temperatures remove the embrittlement that hydrogen confers upon steels at room temperature,1 * see Fig. la and b, and that high strain rates have a similar effect,'-' see Fig. 2a, b, and c. However, the general effect of these two testing conditions on the fracture ductility of hydrogen-charged steels is not known, i.e., the three-dimensional graphical representation of fracture ductility as a function of temperature and strain rate is not known—only two traverses of the graph are available. The need for such a graph is not pedantic. To demonstrate this point, Fig. 3a, b, and c shows three of many three-dimensional graphs, all possible on the basis of the two traverses at hand. The important point (as will be developed in the Discussion) is that each of them would indicate a different basic mechanism for hydrogen embrittlement. It will be noted that the four types of ductility surfaces in Fig. 3a, b, and c may be characterized as follows: Material and Procedure Tensile tests were made at various temperatures and strain rates on a commercial grade of % in. round SAE 1020 steel in both a virgin state and as charged with hydrogen. The steel was spheroidized at 1250°F for 168 hr to give the unembrittled steel the lowest possible transition temperature. The steel was charged cathodically with hydrogen as follows: The specimen was attached to a 6 in. steel wire, degreased for 5 min in trichlorethylene, rinsed with water, and fixed in a plastic top in the center of a cylindrical platinum mesh anode. The assembly was placed in a 1000 milliliter beaker containing an electrolyte of 900 milliliters of 4 pct sulphuric acid and 10 milliliters of poison (2 grams of yellow phosphorous dissolved in 40 milliliters of carbon disulphide). A current density of 1 amp per sq in. was used which developed a 4 v drop across the two electrodes. All electrolysis was carried on at room temperature. Temperatures for tensile tests were obtained by immersing the specimens in baths of water (+70° to + 150°F), mixtures of liquid nitrogen and isopen-tane (+70° to —24O°F), and boiling nitrogen (-240" to-320°F). Specimens were tested in tension at strain rates of 0.05, 10, 100, 5000, and 19,000 in. per in. per min. The 0.05 and 10 in. per in. per rnin strain rates were obtained on a 10,000 lb Riehle tensile testing machine, the 100 in. per in. per rnin rate on a hydraulic-type draw bench with a special fixture, and the 500 and 19,000 in. per in. per rnin rates on a drop hammer. The fracture ductility of hydrogen-charged steel at room temperature and normal testing strain rates (-0.05 in. per in. per min) is a function of electro-lyzing time, dropping to a value that remains constant after a critical time.'* Under the conditions of • The hydrogen content of the steel continues to increase with charging time even after the ductility has leveled off to its saturated value.' this research the saturated loss in ductility occurred at approximately 30 min, see Fig. 4, and a 60 min charging time was taken as standard for all subsequent tests. After charging the steel with hydrogen, the surface was covered with blisters. These have been described by Seabrook, Grant, and Carney.' The original diameter of the specimen was not reduced by acid attack, even after 91 hr. Results The ductility of both uncharged and charged specimens is given as a function of strain rate in Fig. 5, and as a function of temperature at four different strain rates in Fig. 6. These results are assembled into a three-dimensional graph in Fig. 7. The high-temperature Strength oF TD nickel has been observed to be dependent upon the previons thermal and mechanical history of the material. Variations in both the level and the anisotropy of strength have been observed. 01 this paper- these variations are correlated with the storing of annealing resistant elastic strain energy in the matrix of the TD nickel. An x-vay line -broadening tecknique is used to measure the maLrTis elastie strain. THE inclusion of a finely dispersed second phase into a ductile matrix has long been recognized as an extremely effective method of strengthening the matrix both at high and at low homologous temperatures. It has been found, however, that the factors which determine the high-temperature strength are not the same as those which are important at low temperatures. Below 0.5 Tm the size and distribution of the second phase particles are of prime importance in determining the strength,')' while above this temperature the strength is mainly dependent upon the previous thermal and mechanical history of the alloy,3-7 This paper is primarily concerned with explaining the response of the high-temperature mechanical strength of one of these alloys (DuPont's TD nickel) to various thermo-mechanical treatments. It will be shown that this response is not associated with the occurrence of any form of dislocation substructure within the matrix of the alloy. It has been found, however, that a correlation does exist between the elastic strain level in the matrix and the previous thermomechanical history of the alloy and that the observed changes in elastic strain level parallel the measured changes in high-temperature strength. It therefore must be concluded that variations in high-temperature strength are a direct result of the variations in elastic strain level. MATERIAL TD nickel contains approximately 2 vol pct of Tho2 in an unalloyed nickel matrix. It is formed, as a powder, by a chemical technique and this powder is compacted to form ingots which are then extruded to give 21/2-in.-diam rod. Rod of smaller diameter is prepared from the as-extruded rod by swaging. In the studies reported in this paper, 1/2-in.-diam rod was used. This rod received an anneal of 1 hr at 1100°C prior to being used in any of these studies. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Two methods were used to examine the structure of the nickel matrix of the TD nickel. These were: 1) transmission electron microscopy; 2) the analysis of the position and profile of X-ray diffraction lines obtained using the nickel matrix as the diffracting media. To prepare thin foils for electron-microscopical examination, slices of TD nickel approximately 0.050 in. thick were cut from the as-received 1/2-in.-diam rod. These were then chemically polished down to 0.045 in., rolled to 0.009 in., given a predetermined heat treatment, and thinned, using a modified Bollman technique, to provide the foils for observation. All observations were carried out at 100 kv, using a Hitachi HU-11 electron microscope. Specimens of the undeformed rod were prepared by grinding down the 0.050-in.-thick slices to approximately 0.015 in. and then thinning chemically and electrolytically to give the thin foils. The X-ray specimens were prepared by rolling 0.375-in.-thick rectangular blocks down to 0.075 in. The surfaces of the rolled material were ground flat, chemically polished to remove the layer disturbed by the grinding, and given a predetermined anneal in an inert atmosphere. They were then ground lightly to check their flatness and given a final chemical polish prior to being examined. The X-ray diffraction line profiles were measured using an automated Picker biplane diffractometer. A special specimen holder was built to allow a more accurate and reproducible positioning of the specimen. The line profiles were determined by carrying out intensity measurements at intervals of either 1/30 deg or 1/60 deg over a range of 3 deg on either side of the nickel peaks of interest. A piece of pure nickel which had been recrystallized to give a large grain size was used as a standard to give the X-ray line profile generated by a strain-free matrix. The analysis of the X-ray diffraction line profiles is a modification of that due initially to Warren and Aver-bach8and has been described elsewhere.3 This analysis gives a measurement of two parameters associated with the structure of the nickel matrix. These parameters are: 1) the size of the coherently diffracting domains within the nickel matrix; 2) the magnitude of the elastic strains in these domains. Both of these parameters are first determined in terms of a Fourier series. These series are obtained from other Fourier series which describe the measured profile of the X-ray diffraction lines. Thus, for both the coherently diffracting domain size and the elastic strain level, it is possible to plot Ft (the Fourier coefficient) against t (the term in the Fourier series), where t can be expressed in terms of a distance L and the Fourier coefficient Ft(S) (associated with elastic strain level) can be expressed in terms of the root mean square strain (e2)1/2. Thus a plot of (F 2)1/2 vs L can be obtained. Plots of this type are shown graphically in Figs. 6 and 8. Interpretation

The resulting permeability, p, is found to obey the The experimental data justifies the permeation mechanism as a diffusion contl-olled pnssage of Ilvdrogen atoms through the metal barrier. 1 HE permeability of metals to hydrogen has been investigated by a number of workers and their published results have been tabulated by Barrer' up to 1951. Since most of the work on the permeability has been accomplished prior to this date, the compilation is fairly complete. Mathematical discussion of the permeability process has been reported by Barrer, smithells, and more recently by zener. From these efforts several facts are observed. First, the permeability of metals to diatomic gases involves the passage through the metal of individual atoms of the permeating gas. This is evidenced by the fact that the rate of permeation is directly proportional to the square root of the gas pressure. Second, the gas permeates the lattice of the metal and not along grain boundaries. It was shown by Smithells and Ransley that the rate of permeation through single-crystal iron was the same after the iron had been recrystallized into several smaller crystals. Third, it has been observed that the rate of permeation is inversely proportional to the thickness of the metal membrane. Johnson and Larose5 verified these phenomena by measurirlg the permeation of oxygen through silver foils of various thicknesses. Similar findings were noted by Lombard6 for the system H-Ni and by Lewkonja and Baukloh7 for H-Fe. Finally, it has been determined that for a gas to permeate a metal, activated adsorption of the gas on the metal must take place. Rare gases are not adsorbed by metals, and attempts to measure permeabilities of these gases have proved futile. ~~der' found negative results on the permeability of iron to argon. Also, Baukloh and Kayser found nickel impervious to helium, neon, argon, and krypton. From what was stated above concerning the dependence of the rate on the reciprocal thickness of the metal barrier, it is seen that although adsorption is a very important process, at least in determining whether permeation will or will not ensue, it is not the rate determining process for the common metals. A case in which adsorption is of sufficient inlportance to cause abnormal behavior has been noted in the case of Inconel-hydrogen and various stainless steels.'' APPARATUS The apparatus used in this study is shown in Fig. 1. The membrane is a thin disc (A), but is an integral part of an entire membrane assembly. The entire unit is one piece, being machined from a solid ingot of metal stock. When finished, the membrane assembly is about 5 in. long. Two membrane assemblies were made; the dimensions of the membranes are given in Table I. The wall thickness is large compared to the thickness of the membrane, being on the average in the ratio of 13 to 1. There exists in this design the possibility that some gas may diffuse around the corner section of the membrane where it joins the walls of the membrane assembly, If such an effect is present, it is of a small order of magnitude, as evidenced by the agreement of the values of permeability between the two membranes under the same temperature and pressure. A thermocouple well (B) is drilled to the vicinity of the membrane. The entire membrane assembly is then encased in an Inconel jacket and mounted in a resistance furnace. The interior of the jacket is connected to an auxiliary vacuum pump and is always kept evacuated so that the membrane assembly will suffer no oxidation at the temperatures at which measurements are taken. The advantages of this configuration are: 1) there are no welds about the membrane itself, so that the chance of welding material diffusing into the membrane at elevated temperatures is remote. 2) It is possible to maintain the membrane at a constant temperature. Since the resulting permeation rate is very dependent upon temperature, it is advisable to be as free as possible from all temperature gradients. 3) It is possible to obtain reproducible results using different specimens. WITH most cast metals the grain size may vary within wide limits, depending upon the conditions at the moment of freezing. These conditions are subject to control in magnesium-base alloys, by proper melting and superheating techniques, enabling production of quite uniform and fine-grained castings, almost independent of section thickness. However, such variations of grain size as do exist, in common with all metals, are reflected in corresponding changes in mechanical properties. It is the intent of this paper to present data giving the relationship between grain size and mechanical properties. Data are also included on the combined effects of grain size and microporosity. In addition, a short discussion of factors influencing the grain size of sand castings is included. MEASUREMENT OF GRAIN SIZE By grain size is meant the statistical distribution of volumes occupied by the individual crystallites in a metal section. Since this is almost always impossible of direct measurement, several methods of estimating and expressing the size have been evolved. Most exact methods make use of the microscope. This involves study of a single plane cut at random through the metal. What is seen in the microscope are polygons, each the cross section of a grain. The diameters or areas of these polygons are then measured and the grain size is expressed as an average diameter, number of grains per unit area, average area per grain, or, rarely, average volume per grain. Rutherford, Aborn, and Bain3 have discussed extensively the errors involved when using a plane section to estimate volume. They clearly point out that the tendency is to underestimate the true grain size because of the nature of the measurement. The A.S.T.M.. recommends that measurement be made by comparison with a standard chart, by means of Jeffries' planimetric method' or Heyn's intercept method. The Society recommends that the notation be in terms of the number of grains per unit area (as is the grain-size number used for steel) or as an average diameter, expressed in inches or millimeters (as for copper and brass). The method of measurement used for this study was comparison with a standard chart, which has been described by P. F. George.', The chart was constructed by photographing at i00 diameters a uniform specimen with an average grain diameter of 0.003 in. The average diameter of this specimen was determined by numerous measurements, using both the Jeffries and Heyn methods. The other grain sizes were then obtained by appropriate enlargement of the master sample. Careful comparison of the chart method with other methods on identical samples indicates that though the differences be-
