This chapter describes a new approach to the solution of stress distribution around underground openings utilizing the finite element method and employing stochastically simulated rock properties. It is well-known from extensive laboratory tests that the properties of rocks, e.g., Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio, are not single-valued but form some distribution. If the scatter of test data is attributed to the variability of the rock itself rather than due to an inadequacy in test procedure, then stress solutions have to consider these variations. Utilizing this basic philosophy, the present study was initiated. A long circular opening subjected to plane strain in a hydrostatic stress field was chosen as a specific example to illustrate this approach. The technique adopted in solving stress distributions was based on the finite element method. This method is essentially a generalization of standard structural analysis procedures in which the continuum is idealized as an assemblage of "elements," interconnected at a finite number of nodal points. It is capable therefore of handling different material properties for individual elements in the model, if desired. In this study, each individual element was assumed to be isotropic, homogeneous, and elastic. However, values for Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio were randomly varied from element to element according to an assumed frequency distribution.

C. G. McLachlan—In the foregoing paper the author has presented a very neat method for calculating the solution recovery for a countercurrent flowsheet. He has, however, based his calculations, as he states, on the assumption that "the concentration of dissolved value must be exactly the same in the overflow and underflow of any thickener." This assumption, which is usually made regardless of the type of calculation used, is "not strictly correct because diffusion of the dissolved gold in the solution associated with the solids as it progresses through the countercurrent system is far from being instantaneous, with the result that on a ton for ton basis, the assay of the solution in the thickener underflow is higher than in the corresponding thickener overflow. An agitator introduced into the flowsheet between thickeners will reduce, but not entirely eliminate, this difference. In practice we have found that the best way to take care of this condition— in addition to the use of one or more intermediate agitators—is to circulate 20 pct or 25 pct more solution than called for by the cheoretical calculation. This presents no difficulty provided that adequate thickener capacity is provided in the original design of the countercurrent circuit.

RECENTLY Aust et al.&apos; proposed a model of non-equilibrium grain boundary segregation based on a vacancy gradient induced uphill diffusion process of solute to grain boundaries. According to their proposal, solute atoms which are attracted to vacancies would, during the cooling of a sample, migrate with vacancies toward grain boundaries (vacancy sinks) and thereby enhance the solute concentration in boundary regions. For solute atoms which are not attracted to vacancies no such boundary solute enrichment would be expected. These concepts were given experimental support by boundary and bulk mi-crohardness measurements of various thermally treated dilute zinc and lead alloys and also doped aluminum oxide. The underlying assumption in their work was that solute enrichment in boundary regions is indicated by higher microhardness values. From thermodynamic considerations1&apos;2 it appears that the solid-liquid solute distribution coefficient (K), defined as the concentration of solute in the solid to the concentration of solute in the liquid at equilibrium, indicates whether attractive or repulsive forces exist between vacancies and solute atoms. K < 1 indicates a solute-vacancy attractions, K > 1 indicates no, or a repulsive, vacancy-solute interaction. This note is to report on observations of different grain boundary etching phenomena in high purity zinc alloys. These phenomena appear to depend on whether a K < 1 or K > 1 solute is present. In experiments designed to measure directly the solute enrichment in grain boundary regions, samples of zone refined zinc with 0.1 at. pct solute additions were cooled from 380°C at a rate of 3°C per min. A surface layer of approximately 50 was then removed from the samples by chemical polishing. The samples&apos; surfaces were then protected by a chromating treatment such that in a subsequent etch only grain boundary regions were dissolved. The dissolved regions were approximately semicircular troughs, 10 µ in width. The grain boundaries were usually in the middle, i.e., at the bottom, of this trough. For zinc containing the K < 1 solutes cadmium and aluminum, the grain boundary was always indicated by a ridge as shown in Fig. 1. For pure zinc, and zinc containing the K > 1 solutes copper and gold, a groove at the bottom of the trough indicated the boundary position, Fig. 2., To test if these different grain boundary etching behaviors were possibly connected with the segregation process discussed above, the Zn-Cd alloy was again heated to 380°C and quenched into brine. After surface protection and etching it was found that this specimen no longer exhibited the grain boundary ridges but rather grain boundary grooves as shown in Fig. 2. It would appear, therefore, that the boundary ridge is a consequence of a process occurring during the slow cooling of the samples. From absorption spectrophotometric analysis it was found that for slowly cooled samples containing K < 1 solutes, the solute/zinc ratios of the material from the boundary trough were consistently considerably higher than the solute/zinc ratios of the bulk alloys. This boundary region solute enrichment was not observed in quenched samples. It is concluded therefore, that the boundary ridge shown in Fig. 1 is directly or indirectly connected with nonequilibrium solute segregation.

The public is already familiar with the general fact that the scope and the financial resources of the approaching St. Louis World&apos;s Fair are much larger than those of any of the preceding great expositions; and both the visitor and the exhibitor, when he comes to St. Louis in 1904, will find it to be a real World&apos;s Pair, with exhibits and visitors from every known country. Passing over the subject, as to the general Exposition, with this brief statement, I ask Sour attention to the consideration of a few important facts connected with the proposed mining exhibits at this Exposition. First of all, I may say that. reading- and writing-rooms and library facilities will be furnished in the Mines Building for miners and mining engineers, and it is expected that when they visit the Exposition they will make these rooms their headquarters, and give the Chief of the Department and his assistants an opportunity to extend to them such courtesies as may be possible. JAPAN&apos;S iron and steel industry has always been closely connected with military strategy. Many years ago it became evident that the country&apos;s iron-ore resources were too small to support any extensive industry. As a result a belief in the imperative necessity of securing such resources has influenced Japan&apos;s political and economic policy in the Far East. Iron-ore developments in China are too well known to need repeating except to note that they have been rather unsatisfactory to both China and Japan. The ore deposit at Tayeh, in China, is not as large as was first believed and, though that and other sources of supply in China proper are now furnishing Japan a little more than a million tons of ore yearly, it cannot be counted upon as a large permanent source of supply. The deposit in Shantung proved so disappointing on further exploration that operations there have, so far as I know, long since ended. The operations at Pen-bsi-hu, in South Manchuria, which C. F. Wang de¬scribed in the A.I.M.E. TRANSACTIONS for 1918, Vol. 59, were reported to have yielded 84,000 tons of pig iron in 1928 and about 50,000 in 1935, so they seem to be going back.

This camp is just now startled by the alarming suggestion that unless there shall speedily be an appreciation in the value of silver, and a decrease in the cost of salt, it will be prudent business policy to close the Alice mines and mills until the conditions of production are more favorable. Such an event would be a great blow to the prosperity of Butte. It would throw some hundreds of men out of employment, and it might lead to the adoption of the same policy by other companies, which, like the Alice, have not been able to pay dividends to their shareholders for a long time. The question arises, and becomes emphatic: If, under the present adverse conditions, the mines and mills cannot be made to pay a proper profit, why should they continue to be worked ? The owners mentally ask: Shall we go on exhausting our mines, pouring out a stream of silver for the maintenance of the community, and the support of the rail ways, or shall we husband our reserves, withdraw the miners from our slopes, and wait for more favorable conditions ? This is the impending question, and all concerned dread to meet and answer it. Let us briefly review the situation and forecast, if possible, what the solution of&apos; the problem will be. It must be understood that the discussion does not include, or refer to, the immense copper-producing interests of the camp, which may or may not be upon a very much more satisfactory basis. It will be confined chiefly to the operations of the Alice company, sta tistics of which are at hand, without involving the other silver com panies in the conclusions beyond those inevitable from well-known facts, patent to all. There are at present in Butte and in its vicinity in the principal mills an aggregate of 290 stamps dropping upon silver-ores: Alice,...........80 stamps. Martensitic transformations were observed by optical metallography and electrical-resistivity measurements during cooling at cryogenic temperatures of the bcc pr-phase Au-Zn alloys. The com-position dependence of the MS, MF, AS , and AF temperatures have been determined. It is concluded that the martensitic platelets which grow mainly in the lengthwise direction and which are associated with a very small temperature hysteresis are "thermoelastic" martensite. In some cases the observed structure seems to have no definite crys-tallographic habit or consists of a mixture of- plates and broad transformed areas. THE majority of the bcc /3-phase alloys in systems of copper, silver, and gold with zinc and cadmium are unstable at low temperatures and undergo a transformation upon further cooling into another structure. A large number of such transformations are martensitic. The composition dependence of the Ms temperatures has been determined and reported for CU-~n,&apos; Ag-Cd,&apos; and AU-C~~ alloys. The 50 at. pct ordered Au-Zn p&apos; alloy has been reported by Jan and pearson4 to transform martensitically at 58°K in connection with their study of the de Haas-van Alphen effect The p&apos; phase in the Au-Zn system has the ordered CsC1-type structure. The phase field is shown in Fig. 1: it has the typical V shape which is characteristic of all copper-, silver-, and gold-based binary /3-phase alloys. There appears to be no a priori reason why the transformation should be limited to the equiatomic composition and the availability of a cryogenic stage for optical metallography5 has permitted studies down to the liquid-helium temperature of a series of alloys in this system. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Predetermined weights of 99.999 pct pure gold and zinc were melted and cast under a partial atmosphere of helium in sealed quartz capsules. Thorough mixing of the molten metals was achieved by vigorous shaking, followed by a rapid quench into a brine solution. All ingots were homogenized at 640°C for 4 days. Field studies and laboratory research have established the fact that the expulsive force which drives petroleum into wells, from the reservoir sands in which it is stored by nature, is primarly an expression of the energy latent within compressed natural gas dissolved or occluded in, or otherwise associated with the oil. Each barrel of oil produced is forced into the recovery well by the expansive energy of a certain volume of compressed gas, originally stored with the oil in the pores of the reservoir rock; and each cubic foot of gas so produced with the oil and expanded to atmospheric pressure reduces by so much the total natural energy available for oil expulsion. This relationship between the volumes of gas and oil produced has seemed so important that petroleum production technolo-gists have come to regard the "gas-oil ratio," or the "gas factor" as it has been more conveniently termed, as a measure of oil-production efficiency. Different methods of oil recovery and production devices are now Com pared on this basis and estimates of ultimate recovery obtainable through their use are considered by many to be inversely proportional to the values of their respective gas factors. The writer has been among those who have given support to a widcspread movement toward a proper recognition of the significance of the gas factor as a guide in the control of producing oil wells, and does not wish to oppose its more extended application. It seems necessary, how-cvcr, in view of the almost elemental faith with which the principle of the gas factor has been received in many quarters, to point out that it is a most complex factor, and one which cannot be regarded as an absolute index of production efficiency without due regard to other contributing factors by which it is influenced to an important degree. Variables Influencing Gas Factor The mere recording of a low gas factor, obtained through the use of some method or device, does not necessarily imply efficient oil production; and conversely, a high gas factor does not always signify inefficient recov-

THE distinction btween price reduction as a re-sult of lowering of production cost and price re-duction through unrestricted competition cannot be made too clear, because they are often interwoven in actual experience. Take the whole population of a town whose principal industry is shoe manufacturing as a concrete example. If the manufacturer is able to cut his price per pair in half because he has found out how to make a pair at half the cost, he will com-monly let a number of his men go, because reduction in production cost usually results from substituting cheap mechanical energy for expensive human energy. These people will normally find other employment. The workmen who remain employed usually earn more in dollars than they did before, and in spending it give employment where there was less before. Mining companies that initiate considerable enter-prises in foreign lands where the economic level is low, and where most of the people are busily but in-efficiently engaged in raising enough food to support themselves and their families, often find themselves confronted with an acute labor problem. If any con-siderable number of workers leave the land to work in and about the mines, those left on the land cannot raise enough food to keep them all unless they are taught better methods of agriculture and provided with equipment that will enable them to produce more with less expenditure of effort. Add to this the fact that managers commonly find that the "natives," as our British cousins designate them, usually need more food and a better balanced diet than they have been accustomed to in order to show anything above the lowest order of efficiency in industrial work,. and it is clear that to make a new industry possible in what may be termed an economic province involves increas-ing the productivity, not only of those who are em-ployed in it, but of the whole social group. It has already been pointed out that the employ-ment of large numbers of men in automobile manu-facture is only possible because the others have in-creased their productivity enough to turn out every-thing else that is needed without the help of the auto-mobile workers.

The matter of reformed spelling as proposed in a circular letter coming from Palo Alto, Calif., was discussed, after which the Secretary was instructed to write to Secretary Stoughton and ask that when the matter is opened for discussion in New York he present the emphatic protest of the Montana Section against the alleged reforms in spelling. THE violent outgassing of commercial tungsten and other refractory metals when melted in an electron beam zone refining apparatus1"3 is dealt with experimentally by one or both of two approaches. One is to provide a suitable emission current control1,2 the other is to purify the metal in the solid state before melting.4 The first of these is usually sufficient, but the authors chose also to investigate the source of the troublesome gases and to devise means of solid-state purification. Some further insights into the use of tungsten as a structural material at temperatures near its melting point were also revealed in the course of the work. One may speculate on the causes of gas formation in tungsten at high temperature by inferences from the literature and an examination of the impurities in commercial wire. Davenport5 observed microporosity in both tungsten and molybdenum filaments heated to several hundred degrees below their melting points. Studying the function of oxygen in molybdenum welds, Perry, Spacil, and wulff8 attributed similar porosity to the disproportionation of Moo2 to molybdenum metal and Moo3. Tungsten dioxide also disproportionates7 above 2000oC to yield WO3 vapor at considerable pressure. Commercial tungsten contains some 5 to 20 wt ppm O and a similar concentration of carbon depending on the details and precautions of processing. Therefore, evolution of CO is also a strong possibility as a source of gas at high temperatures. Furthermore, even for activities in the order of 0.01, it may be calculated that the pressure of CO at 3000°C would be over 4000 psi, which is in excess of the tensile strength of tungsten at this temperature.9,10 Powder metallurgy tungsten contains some 0.02 pet Fe and 0.002 to 0.005 pet of the elements Ni, Si, Al, Ca, Mn, Mg, and Mo; at temperatures over 2800°c, therefore, these elements will exhibit appreciable vapor pressure, though small compared to that of WO3 and CO. Some of these impurities may react to form high-pressure monoxides such as SiO and A10. Finally, dissolved and occluded nitrogen is an ever-present source of high-pressure gas. Commercial Type 218, General Electric filament wires, 0.025 in. diam, were heated by resistance in 10 -4 mm of Hg and in argon or hydrogen at pressures from 50 µ to atmospheric. For temperature determinations in vacuo, the Jones - Langmuir8 current-temperature relationship was employed. For gaseous atmospheres, the burn-out temperature was assumed to be the same as in vacuo so that a small, constant correction could be made for temperatures below burn-out conditions (i.e., local heating to failure). Several dozen experiments may be summarized by pointing out some structural observations. At 3050oC in 1 atm of A, porosity is very evident after 30 min, as shown in Fig. 1. The plight of the Japanese mining business is pitiful. Coal mines were given the highest priority for all materials they needed, yet between the end of the war and June 1948, the government was obliged to subsidize them to the extent of 22 billion yen, this being the difference between the consumer&apos;s price and the producer&apos;s price. Most of the metal mining companies have been operating at only one fifth to one third of war-time production rates, and financial losses have been terrific. The chief difficulties have been a plethora of office workers and a dearth of equipment, supplies, and miners. The principal material needs at metal mines are steel rails. cars, plates, nails, rubber hoses, and belting, to say nothing of modern core drills which are totally lacking. Until recently the great shortage was in coal; for lack of fuel the smelters and factories failed to produce the very metals and equipment now needed to operate the mines. Nation-wide shortages have created a monstrous inflation of prices throughout all the economy, currently amounting to 200 times the prewar figures. For example, the price of copper ranged from 500 to 900 yen per metric ton for many years until 1937, but in mid-1948 producers were

The area for which oil and gas developments in South Texas are reported for 1940 in this paper covers the same counties that were included in the reports for 1938 and 1939, with the addition of LaSalle County. LaSalle County is includcd in the Laredo district of South Texas, which totals seven counties for that district. The Corpus Christi district remains the same, with nine counties. The two districts together comprise what is known as the South Texas area for this report. Continued exploration along established trends and beyond proven field limits during 1940 provided South Texas with new fields and new producing levels at a rate of discovery fairly comparable with the high records set during recent years. The wells drilled in the counties within this district (including LaSalle) numbered 1656, approximately 8 per cent below the 1801 figure of last year. However, rank wildcats totaIed 336, an increase of 17.5 per cent compared to the 286 drilled in 1939. Therefore, since new field discoveries numbered 25 in 1940 against 29 in 1939, the rate of new field discoveries in 1940, based upon rank wildcats drilled, was I/I3.4 while that of 1939 was I/9.86, which shows a decrease of about 25 per cent in the rate of new fields. The rank wildcat tests in 1940 gave the following results: 18 produced oil, 4 produced distillate with gas, 3 produced. only gas, and 3r1 were dry holes (Table 5). Of the 1320 tests drilled in already proven fields or as extensions to pro+en areas (representing a decline of 12.8 per cent from last year&apos;s total of 1515 tests), 1048 produced oil or distillate, 60 produced gas and 212 were dry holes (Table 4). Of the producers, 50 found new sands or crude-in-distillate-sands in existing fields. Among the several fields subjected to extensive development were: Colorado, Jim Hogg County; East White Point, San Patricio and Nueces County; Rincon and Sun, Starr County; Glen, Webb and Zapata Counties; Wade City and Orange Grove, Jim Wells County; Stratton and South Clara Driscoll, Nueces County, and Aransas Pass, San Patricio and Aransas Counties. The development of important crude reserves on structures formerly considered primarily distillate fields has probably been the most important phase of the year&apos;s operations in South Texas. The Rincon, Stratton, Agua Dulce, Wade City, Odem and Robston fields provided the new crude sand discoveries. At some places crude production was opened by exploratory wells that found new sand horizons; in others by flank wells that found already discovered distillate sands sufficiently low to provide crude production. Rincon, Starr County, with its multiple sands, is now believed to be one of South Texas&apos; largest crude-oil reserves. Offshore drilling showed important results during the year, including the discovery of two new submerged fields and the extension of the East White Point field into offshore Nueces County. The mining industry is faced with a pressing problem; that is, to develop more efficient methods of extraction, handling and upgrading-techniques that will do the job faster and better than ever before. New techniques require new machines, or applications of new and improved materials that can be used to modify and improve existing machine and equipment designs. The traditional approach has been to increase productivity by increasing equipment size. Prognostication indicates that the trend toward larger equipment sizes and capacities will continue as one answer to the challenge imposed by future increases in mineral demands. But what is the limit on the continued growth of equipment size? Until about 1930, there was a very definite limit-a limit imposed by the strength of the steels and the power plants then available. The equipment engineer had come to an impasse: even though it was easily possible, for instance, to triple the size of a bucket, it had become impractical to correspondingly enlarge the boom, the counterweight, and the power plant.

A permanent exhibition of mining machinery has just been opened in the Grand Central Palace, New York City. The exhibits include: Aerial tramways, amalgamation, assaying and laboratory appliances and supplies, blast furnaces, coal, coal-breaker plant, coal excavation, coal products, compressed-air plant, concentrating, crushing, cyanidation, distillation, drainage and pumping, drilling, earth excavation, electrical supplies, explosives, fire prevention, flotation, general supplies, hoisting, hygiene, welfare, iron products, leaching, mechanical conveyors, metal products, natural gas, petroleum, petroleum products, electric, steam, hydraulic, gas, air, and internal-combustion engines, power machinery, preparation of coal, pumping, refining, roasting, rock excavation, rotary drilling; boring, safety appliance, screening and washing, sizing and classifying, smelting, storage of coal, storage of petroleum, surface transportation, surveying, underground timbering, underground trans-port, ventilation, mine. This exposition is operated by the Merchants and Manufacturers Exchange of New York for the purpose of showing under one roof all lines of machinery and mechanical appliances. ALTHOUGH the situation in the oil industry during the past year has. not been conducive to large expenditures for development and research, there is little indication that such expenditures have been curtailed. While few outstanding achievements have been reported, considerable progress has been made in the development of new products and the adaptation of petroleum derivatives to new uses. The most important question facing the refiner today is the anti-knock quality of his gasoline. This year has seen the widespread adoption of the term "octane number" as a measure for anti-knock values, and in the latter months of the year the public has been made acutely aware of this condition through competitive advertising. Gaso-line is no longer priced on volatility and gravity alone, but on octane number as well; and premiums are being paid for material of relatively high octane rating. The situation has grown more and more competitive and has forced refiners continually to raise the octane rating of their regular and com-petitive grades, and at this writing the same situation exists for premium grades which have possessed relatively high anti-knock properties for some time. Straight-run gasoline produced from paraffin-base or semiparaffin-base crudes has an inherently low anti-knock value, and in order to convert this material to a higher quality it has been found necessary to crack an increasing percentage of the crude oil charge. By completely cracking the heavier portions of the crude, and blending back with the straight-run gasoline, it has been possible to produce an average of 63 to 65 octane number gasoline&apos; on average Mid-Continent crude. This operation carried to the fullest extent does not suffice, however, and the recent and rapid development of the so-called "re-forming unit," has resulted. The straight-run gasoline fraction is cut into two parts: a light, low boiling point gasoline; and a heavy gasoline or naphtha. The latter containing the low anti-knock portions of the gasoline, is sent through a re-forming unit and subjected either to high temperature ,or pressure, or both, which materially increases its octane number.
