Single isothermal sections were constructed for the titonium-rich corners of the systems Ti-Fe-O, Ti-Cr-O, and Ti-Ni-0 with a view to locating the shape and disposition of the ternary intermediate-phase fields for the compounds isomorphous with Fe3W3C. IN a previous note,' it was reported that a group of ternary intermediate phases existed which occurred in the general composition range Ti,X,O-Ti&O where X was one of the following elements: copper, nickel, cobalt, iron, or manganese. In two instances, binary intermediate phases occurred (Ti²Cu and Ti²Ni) which appeared to be isomorphous. The X-ray diffraction patterns of the phases could be indexed on a cubic lattice whose cell edge was of the order of 11 kX. Karlsson2 stated that the line extinctions and line intensities indicated that these phases were isomorphous with Fe³W³C and therefore belonged to the space group Oh. This author also noted that no unique phase of this type occurred at the composition Ti,Cr,O. This latter statement was accepted as true at the time the previous technical note was written.' However, work continued along these lines and that reported here has shown that a phase isomorphous with Fe³W³C does exist in the vicinity of the composition Ti³Cr³O but not at or near Ti4 Cr²O. The lattice parameter of this phase was found to be 13.01 kX. Metallographic examination of both as-cast and annealed specimens of these supposed ternary oxide phases disclosed structures which were far from single phase in many instances. It was considered a point of some interest to locate more positively the composition coordinates of the single-phase fields. To this end, single isothermal sections for the systems Ti-Fe-O (1000°C), Ti-Cr-0 (1000°C), and Ti-Ni-0 (900"C) were constructed. Phase relationships were studied by both X-ray diffraction and metallotrra~hic methods. Allovs were prepared as 10 g buttons by melting in a noncon-sumable electrode, water-cooled copper crucible arc-melting furnace using a helium atmosphere. Oxygen was introduced quantitatively by the use of weighed amounts of TiO² or TiO. Iodide titanium and the purest available alloying metals were used. All results are discussed in terms of the nominal composition of the melts. Previous experience with making oxygen-rich alloys had shown that oxygen losses were not significant if a homogeneous melt was produced. Weight-loss measurements were used to check loss in metallics during melting. Anneals were conducted in evacuated Vycor bulbs, and annealing times ranged from 24 hr at 1000 °C to 48 hr at 900°C. To achieve equilibrium in certain sluggish alloys, seven-day anneals were used. Debye-Scherrer powder patterns were taken in a 14 cm diam camera using filtered CuK radiation (K² = 1.541232 kX; K., = 1.53739 kX). Specimens were prepared by crushing and screening previously annealed buttons. In general, the X-ray diffraction results were used to identify the major phases, while the metallographic examinations were more useful in indicating the number of phases present. By the use of the combined results and general fundamental rules governing ternary equilibrium, it was possible to construct isothermal sections in good detail. In some instances where auxiliary lattice-parameter data were available, it was possible to lay down tie lines and to locate more positively corners of three-phase fields. Isothermal Section of the System Ti-Fe-O at 1000°C The binary systems Ti-O³ and Ti-Fe4 have been published. Binary phases, TiO, TiFe, and TiFe2, are likely to be encountered in the titanium-rich corner of the system. The structures are NaCl (Bl), CsCl (B2), and MgZn, (C14) types, respectively. Although preliminary X-ray diffraction studies indicated the presence of a ternary phase in the composition range Ti,Fe,O-TiJ?e,O, metallographic examination of two specimens at these compositions revealed the presence of other phases. IN 1926 I had occasion to make numerous measure-ments with a Pitot tube. The differential gage was mounted in a box, and since the work entailed setting upon girders, staging, and flues of various shapes and slopes, much time was generally expended in getting the box blocked into the level position. This inconvenience was so considerable that I devised the gage stand shown in the accompanying illustration. The gage is bolted to the board seat, the bolt per-mitting unlimited adjustment in the plane of the paper. The seat, carrying the gage, revolves on trunnions, per-mitting unlimited adjustment in a second plane, per-pendicular to the first. Consequently, the stand may be stood up, hung by one corner, leaned against some-thing or simply laid down, and the gage levelled from any position. On uneven surfaces, where the stand naturally rests on only three of its legs, it may be swung in the manner peculiar to the tripod, bringing the center of gravity within the triangle formed by the legs, thereby providing a firm set-up. Rubber stoppers under compression were found to give sufficient friction to hold the seat in the desired position.

MAGNETITE deposits in the Eastern States have been mined uninterruptedly since pre-Revolutionary War days. The industry, thriving in normal times, was given impetus in all periods of tumult, and continued to advance and expand, until the Lake Superior ores came into production. A period of comparative quiet existed until increased freight rates, together with increased mining costs on Lake Region ores, permitted the magnetites again to compete. This, coupled with World War demands, created unpre¬cedented activity. Producing plants were at their peak, new mines were equipped and put in operation and the industry pushed production beyond the absorption point. Ore stocks were tremendous, internal competition severe, and a great increase in import of European ores brought the industry to a low ebb in 1923.

A series of 0.21 pci carbon steel melts was processed under conditions which sinzulated industrial vacuum degassing practices. The results indicated that the efliciency of carbon deoxidation was not significantly increased by vacuunz degassing at chamber pressures below 100 torr. The two common phenomena of vacuu?rz carbon deoxidation, i.e.,an unaccountable carbon loss and nonequilibrium deoxidation, were observed in this study. Oxygen from adsorbed and chenzically combined water of certain refractory structures was probably responsible for the unaccourttable carbon drop. The nonequzlibrium deoxida-tion phenomenon was adequalely correlated by a bubble nucleation )mechanism. Although the major limiting factor in oxygen removal from these melts contained in alumina crucibles could not be eslablished with certainty, there was some evidence that melt-refractory interactions were not the most imp-portant limiting factor. CONSIDERABLE attention has been given to the use of carbon in conjunction with vacuum degassing* as a deoxidation technique. An advantage of utilizing the reaction: for deoxidation purposes is that the reaction product is gaseous and hence can be effectively removed from the melt. The pressure dependency of Eq. [I] is illustrated by the expression for the thermodynamic equilibrium constant, K: where pco is the partial pressure of carbon monoxide, and hc and ho are, respectively, the Henrian activities of carbon and oxygen in molten steel. The thermodynamic aspects of the C-0 reaction in molten Fe-C-0 alloys have been investigated extensively. Theoretical predictions based on Eq. [2] indicate that, at the chamber pressures reached in most vacuum degassing units, carbon is the most effective deoxidizer that can be obtained. ~ornak' has compared industrial values of carbon and oxygen contents with values calculated from theory, and has shown that on a commercial basis vacuum carbon deoxidation has not achieved the degree of success that is predicted from theoretical considerations of the C-0 reaction. The use of industrial units to determine the reason for this deviation is limited by economics and the difficulty in controlling critical process variables. Therefore laboratory-sized experiments in this area should yield valuable information. Investigations on vacuum carbon deoxidation have been made in experiments conducted under vacuum induction melting conditions where pressures in the low micron range, long treatment times, exposure to highly dynamic vacuum conditions, and relatively quiescent bath conditions have been maintained. Inve~ti~ators~~~ utilizing vacuum induction melting for the production of high-purity iron by carbon deoxidation have concluded that, under high vacuum conditions, melt-refractory interactions constantly supply oxygen to the melt. Thus, it has been suggested that refractory dissociation rather than the C-0 reaction establishes the lowest possible oxygen content of a melt. Thomas and Moreau4 and Bennett, Protheroe, and ward5 have studied carbon deoxidation of Fe-C alloys melted in magnesia crucibles under reduced pressures. The results of both studies differed considerably from those predicted by theory, and the limiting factor for lower oxygen contents was attributed to melt-refractory interactions. Because the refractory material used in both investigations was magnesia, no quantitative measure of crucible reaction could be made and the amount of carbon consumed during treatment was utilized as an indirect indication of the extent of crucible reaction. Studies concerned with the determination of the minimum oxygen content attainable in pure iron and Fe-C alloy material vacuum-induction-melted in various crucible materials have also been conducted."' The suitability of a crucible refractory for use under vacuum conditions appears to depend upon the major refractory constituent, the amount and type of impurity oxides, and the composition of the melt. Meadowcroft and Elliott9 have presented a theoretical review of the type and extent of various refractory reactions which should be considered in vacuum refining. ~eadowcroft'~ considered the vacuum degassing process to be dependent upon the "carbon boil" and has proposed that a part of the difference between the experimental and theoretical results for vacuum carbon deoxidation may be explained by the fact that the pco term in Eq. This paper presents a method of predicting the production history of an underground combustion recovery process. A rigorous solution of the thermodynamics and hydrodynamics involved is beyond the scope of this report. However, a practical scheme to appraise combustion recovery performance has been Worked out. By prudent assumptions, regarding the attainment of steady-state conditions, a trial-and-error solution, which satisfies both material balance and three-phase relative permeability requirements has been evolved and tested. As a combustion zone moves through a formation the interstitial water, the water of combustion and a portion of the oil wil1 be vaporized. These vapors will move downstream to a cooler region of the formation where they will condense. Part of the remaining oil will be displaced by the imposed gas drive and what remains behind will be consumed as fuel. The fluids will distribute themselves downstrean? in a manner which will satisfy the three-phase relative permeability characteristics of the formation. Three distinct zones will exist ahead of the combustion zone: (I) a zone termed a water bank which contains three mobile phases, oil, water and gas; (2) a region containing two mobile phases, oil and gas, called the oil bank; and (3) a zone having the fluid saturution distribution which existed prior to combustion. The mobile water will impose a water flood on the oil in the region containing three flowing phases. The process can be visualized as a simultaneous water .flood and combustion-supported gas drive. It is possible to estimate the saturation distributions in the water bank and oil bank as well as the production history for any combustion temperuture if the porosity, three-phase relative permeability characteristics, oil viscosity and initial saturations are known. This has been done for injection pressures ranging from I to 100 atm, oil viscosities of 10 to 1,000 cp and porosities from 20 to 40 per cent. Several of these calculations have been checked in the laboratory, with the result indicating rather good agreement between the predicted and observed production histories. The analytical and experimental techniques are described and the comparison of predicted and observed performance presented. INTRODUCTION Considerable research by the oil industry during the past 10 years has been directed toward the thermal recovery of crude oil. Of all schemes considered, the one receiving the most attention is in situ combustion. This is a process in which part of the oil is actually burned within the reservoir rock. The uniqueness of the process lies in its potential. Theoretically, this potential generates from the following: (1) it may open the door to vast reserves previously not economically producible, (2) it may induce increased production rates where low rates are now realized and (3) it may give high over-all recovery efficiency. The general idea of the process has received considerable attention in the literature '-' and the following brief description is intended for orientation only. In situ combustion can be visualized by considering a linear system, one end of which represents the injection well and the other the producing well. The formation at the inlet end is raised to ignition temperature by placing a gas or electric heater at the face of the formation or by the ignition of thermite, charcoal or similar material. While heating, the water and part of the oil in the heated region is vaporized and moved out into the reservoir by the injection of gas containing oxygen. In addition, part of the oil is displaced as liquid by the imposed gas drive. The oil not displaced is modified to an immobile, coke-like material (hereafter referred to as coke) by the high temperatures existing immediately ahead of the combustion zone. This coke is used as fuel, and the combustion front advances through the formation at a temperature which is probably in excess of 800°F. As the combustion front advancek it will drive ahead all interstitial oil not rendered immobile and all interstitial water plus the water formed by the combustion of hydrogen. As a result the sand behind the combustion zone is freed of all oil and water. Although the general description of the process has been outlined in the literature, there has been no consideration of the behavior of the fluids moving downstream from the combustion front. Adsorption of polymers and transport, rheology and oil recovery efficiency of their solutions were studied in the laboratory to evaluate the use of polymers in waterflood-ing. While a tenfold mobility reduction was obtained with polymer concentrations as low as 0.05 per cent by weight, the mobility reduction depended on the type of polymer, molecular weight, salinity and pH of water, crude oil and capillary properties of the porous media. Choice of a suitable polymer and a workable concentration will have to be tailored for each application. Little reduction in the residual oil saturation can be expected from polymer flooding. Improvement in the volumetric sweep efficiency is possible hut the extent of the improvement can best be evaluated by properly designed field testing. Some aspects of the field use of polymer floods are discussed. INTRODUCTION Waterflooding is a simple, inexpensive secondary recovery method and is being used widely. Innumerable laboratory studies have been made to unravel the fundamentals of the displacement of oil by water and to find the ways of most efficient oil recovery. These studies and a great many field case histories have revealed that the prime cause of poor oil recovery is the inefficient and incomplete sweep of reservoir volume by the injected water. Sweep efficiency is affected by many factors of which the mobility ratio is an important one. Mobility ratio M is defined here as the ratio of water to oil mobilities: M = (k»/y,r)/(k,JJJJ........(1) In Eq. I, the permeabilities are the effective permeabilities and depend on fluid saturations and, hence, change during the different depletion stages in a flood. A wide practice is to use the effective water permeability at residual oil saturation and the effective oil permeability at interstitial water saturation in Eq. 1. If the mobility ratio is greater than one, the mobility ratio is unfavorable and water, being more mobile than oil, would finger through the oil zone resulting in poor oil recovery efficiency. If the mobility ratio is favorable (one or less) the displacement of oil by water occurs more or less in a pistonlike fashion. In some waterfloods. the mobility ratio is unfavorable and any additives by which the mobility of water can be decreased would favor more efficient oil recovery. The thing to bear in mind, however, is whether or not the improvement in oil recovery is sufficient to more than pay out the cost of the additives needed. For example, materials like sugars, alcohols and glycerine reduce water mobility by thickening the water, but the cost of material requirement precludes any field application. For an additive to be useful in water-flooding, it must bring about a large reduction in water mobility at low concentrations; it must be adsorbed only negligibly; and it must not completely plug up the formation. Some synthetic organic polymers have shown promise of meeting these requirements and have been used in the field.'-W owever, no in-depth studies of the rheological, adsorption and oil displacement characteristics of polymer solutions have been reported. The present work is a study of these properties. EXPERIMENTAL In this work, concentrations are given on a weight per volume basis; 0.5 per cent concentration means 0.5 gm of polymer is dissolved in enough water (or NaCl solution) to make 100 ml. A bactericide, usually 0.1 to 0.2 per cent by volume of 38 per cent formaldehyde solution, was used in the polymer solutions. The NaCl solution was 30,000 ppm. Some properties of the polymers studied are given in Table I. Physical properties of all cores used are in Table 2. Flow behavior of polymer solutions was studied by three consecutive flow tests in cores. First, water (or brine) was injected at constant rate of about 1 ft/D to obtain the water mobility. Then, filtered polymer solution (prepared in water or brine) was flowed through the core. Since the rate was constant, increase in the pressure drop across the core reflects decrease in the mobility. Mechanical properties and optical metallographic characteristics of vanadium containing 53 ppm (wt) H were investigated from, 77° to 298°K. A sharp ductile to brittle transition induced by the presence of hydrogen was observed between 238° and 223°K and a mar-tensitically formed hydride appeared at 200°K. While there appears to be a subtle relationship between the hydride formation and the ductile-brittle transition, it was concluded that the hydride per se was not sufficietzt to cause the severe em brittletnent. On the basis of the metallographic experiments and the results of a Petch analysis it is suggested that the mechanism of the embrittlement involves a reduction of the true surface energy, or cohesion, of the uanadiunz. THAT hydrogen can severely embrittle vanadium is well-documented;'-5 however, the mechanism by which hydrogen induces the observed embrittlement has not been established. It is not known whether the embrittlement of vanadium is caused by the formation of vanadium hydride or by a more subtle role of hydrogen. Until very recently6>' the solid solubility of hydrogen in vanadium at temperatures in the,range of the embrittlement was not known to a useful accuracy. In general, a severe embrittlement of the type produced by the presence of hydrogen in vanadium can be caused by changes in either of two properties of a metal. Either the yield stress of the metal is raised to the extent that plastic deformation at the tip of a crack cannot occur or the cohesive properties of the metal are reduced, at least locally, to the point at which cleavage is the natural response to applied loads. Of course a combination of these is possible. It is not known which of these properties of vanadium is influenced most by the addition of hydrogen. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the role of hydrogen in the embrittlement of vanadium. Accordingly, the solubility of hydrogen in vanadium in the temperature range where embrittlement is most severe was determined, the appearance of vanadium hydride was examined in relation to the initial ductile to brittle transition temperature, and an attempt was made to evaluate the effect of hydrogen on the yield stress and cohesive properties of vanadium. MATERIAL AND PROCEDURES Sample Preparation. The vanadium used in this investigation was prepared by the iodide refining process described by Carlson and owen.' Three ingots, 3 in. diam by 6 in. long, were cold-swaged to 0.096 in. diam, cut into short lengths, and then arc-melted under purified argon into one ingot. This process was repeated to insure a uniform composition in the final ingot. Chemical analysis of the metal is given in Table I. On the basis of work of Loria et a/ .' the following sequence of treatments was performed in order to obtain a uniform equiaxed ultimate grain structure: a) cold swage q-in.-diam ingot to 0.230 in. diam; b) anneal 6 hr at 1000°C in vacuum; c) by cold swaging reduce 81 pct in area in three steps: 0.230 to 0.187 in. diam, 0.187 to 0.150 in. diam, 0.150 to 0.096 in. diam. This sequence provided the desired grain structure after subsequent annealing treatments. Because annealing in evacuated quartz capsules resulted in contamination by oxygen, all anneals in this investigation were performed in a 304 stainless-steel chamber under a dynamic vacuum of 10- I Torr with the vanadium wrapped in tantalum foil. Prior to all annealing treatments the wires were electropolished for 1 min at 16°C in an 80 pct methanol-20 pct sul-furic acid electrolyte at 12.5 v. Following the final reduction the 0.096-in.-diam wire was cut into 2-in. lengths. A 1-in. gage section was reduced to 0.090 in. diam by electropolishing as above. Five different grain sizes were obtained by annealing the 2-in. samples at different temperatures for 8 hr to insure uniform grain size and residual hydrogen removal. The annealing temperatures used and the resulting grain sizes are given in Table 11. The final step in sample preparation was to charge half of the specimens of each grain size with hydro-

The rates of grain boundary and general corrosion were surveyed by an approximate method. Quantitative differences between their variations with the strength or cupric ion content of the acid yielded large variations in their ratio, highly selective intergranular attack being observed only under specific chemical conditions. The boundary corrosion rate increased with the copper content of the aluminum; this was attributed to an autocatalytic effect similar to the one shown for general corrosion. High- purity aluminum in hydrochloric acid exhibits striking intergranular corrosion and other structure-dependent corrosion phenomena of fundamental interest. The behavior is highly sensitive to the metallurgical and chemical conditions, the significance of many of which has not been established. The features of the intergranular-corrosion phenomenon, first described by Rohrman,l are summarized in the remainder of this paragraph. Strong attack normally occurs only at high-angle grain boundaries.' Usually 15 to 25 pctHCl is used to obtain a high rate, but this has also been obtained with weaker (7 to 15 pct) acid either by adding cupric or ferric ion to the acid3-5 or by passing an anodic current (-0.1 ma per sq cm).2,3,5,6 The two latter corrosion conditions produce strong attack of low-angle boundaries after certain heat treatments 2-4,5,7 The susceptibility of high-angle boundaries is influenced by the grain-boundary segregation of iron atoms; this increases the slow (µ per month) attack in 10 pct HCl8 but diminishes the rapid (mm per month) attack in 20 pct Hc14 (the present and most previous investigations deal with rapid attack). That segregation of elements other than iron affects intergranular corrosion has not been demonstrated, although analysis of data for iron alloys indicated that at least one other element must be considered.9 Intergranular attack occurs over a wide range of purity although it begins to become obscured above several hundred parts per million (ppm) total im- purities by the severe general corrosion which accompanies the higher iron contents and which is associated with the presence of a second phase or an inhomogeneous distribution of the dissolved iron.4,6,10 The variation of intergranular-corrosion rate with heat treatment1'3-6'"10 can be explained in some cases in terms of the distribution of the iron impurity but is not in general adequately understood. The present work dealt with two questions not previously considered in detail. The first proceeded from the view that the extent to which a special behavior is associated with the boundaries is indicated not by the intergranular corrosion rate alone but by the ratio of the intergranular to the general corrosion rate. A comparison of the two rates was therefore made for one lot of aluminum in acids of varying strength and metallic ion content. The second question was the effect of the copper content of the aluminum. For general corrosion, it has long been known that copper ions introduced into the acid by corrosion of the solid solution are reduced on the aluminum as patches of elemental copper which enhance the corrosion rate by providing cathodes of lower hydrogen overvoltage than were originally present.''-'3 Since the copper patches remain themselves unchanged, their action is "catalytic", and since they are products of corrosion, the effect is "autocatalytic." This phenomenon is significant at copper levels much lower than previously suspected, even at those typical of high-purity aluminum, as the authors have shown in a previous paper.l4 The present work shows that copper content affects intergranular corrosion. With polycrystalline specimens, truly quantitative rate measurernents are not readily made for intergranular corrosion or for general corrosion in the presence of rapid intergranular attack, and previous work in this field has tended to be qualitative. The present study made use of a simple procedure which provided fair approximations to the quantitative corrosion rates and fitted the purpose of surveying the behavior over % wide range of conditions and displaying certain large effects. The approximations involved in this work were usually outweighed by the experimental scatter, which tends to be substantial in a system as sensitive as this one. I) EXPERIMENTAL A. Material. McCosh, Coatbridge, Scotland (written discussion*).-It is well known in Great Britain that oven operators in the United States have been able to reduce the coking time much below European standards by the employment of higher temperatures. Our linings have always been the factor that has prevented our doing the same, and it would be of much interest to coke-oven operators here if Mr. Blauvelt would give a typical analysis of the bricks his company uses for the linings of its ovens, and if he could see his way to send me a sample so that I could have the texture examined, I should personally be very much obliged. The lining brick which my company has found most successful is of a ganister variety, and has the following analysis: Silica, 80.8 per cent.; alumina and iron oxide, .17.8 per cent.; lime, 0.8 per cent.; magnesia, 0.07 per cent.; but with this brick the least carelessness on the gas regulator's part may destroy the lining. It would also be of interest if Mr. Blauvelt could give the temperatures of the air leaving these generators and also of the oven flues.

It was found that despite the similarity of chemical analyses of different titanium carbides used as base materials for cermets, the physical properties, especially transverse-rupture strengths, of test bars were different. Hence this metallographic study attempts to link physical properties to micro-structures. It is shown that microstructure, grain shape, and grain growth are functions of three interrelated factors: 1—powder production procedure, 2—surface conditioning of the particles, and 3—impurities either contained in the original powder or acquired during ball milling. An explanation is offered for the "coring effect," long observed, but heretofore of unknown origin. The explanation is based on assumption of an oxide film and on chemical analyses which substantiate these findings. TITANIUM carbide has become in recent years a material of great interest in the high temperature field. Consequently, many manufacturers in the United States and Europe are producing titanium carbide for cermet applications as well as for additions to the well known tungsten carbide tools. All present commercial processes of titanium carbide production utilize the chemical reaction of titanium dioxide and carbon to form as nearly as possible stoichiometric Tic. This reaction is carried out in three ways: 1—in a menstruum of molten metal,' 2—in the solid state, either in a protective atmosphere2 or in vacuum;" or 3—in an are-melting operation. In spite of the fact that the pure carbides obtained in these operations are almost identical chemically, the physical properties vary considerably when they are combined with a binder (Ni, Co) to form cermets. This fact led the authors to examine metal-lographically nickel-bonded titanium carbide in order to find the possible reasons for this behavior. Materials and Methods Five different titanium carbides were used in this investigation. They are identified in Table I. The first four materials were used in the as-received condition. Material E, received in lumps, was crushed to —100 mesh and carried through a flotation process in order to bring its graphite content in line with the other products. A Galagher flotation cell was used with pine oil as frothing agent. The chemical analyses of the investigated materials are given in Table 11. The binder used was carbonyl nickel of 9 to 14 microns particle size, supplied by A. D. Mackay. The materials were ball milled at a ball to charge ratio of 6:1 using procedures described under "Experiments and Results." All particle sizes mentioned are averages determined with a Fisher Sub-sieve Sizer. Test bars (lx0.40x0.16 in.) were prepared by 1—hot pressing to 85 to 95 pct of theoretical density at pressures between 1 and 1½ tsi and temperatures from 1600" to 1800°C, 2-—-cold presssing after 3 pct camphor had been added, or 3—wet pressing, both 2 and 3 at pressures between 5 and 10 tsi. All pressed bars were sintered in a vacuum of 105 to 10-6 mm Hg for 2 hr at 1350 °C. Transverse-rupture strengths were determined by breaking on a Baldwin Universal Testing Machine over a 9/16 in. span. Densities were measured by water displacement. The preparation of the specimens for micrographs was done according to Silverman and Doshna Luscz." All magnifications are at X1000. A sodium picrate electrolytic etch was used. Experiments and Results The influence of ball-milling procedure, ball-milling medium, pressing procedure, and sintering procedure on the microstructure of 80/20 — TiC/Ni were investigated. Ball Milling of Materials A, B, and C in a Steel Mill: Figs. 1 and 2 show microstructures of hot-pressed and vacuum-sintered test bars of materials A and B after the respective materials had been ball milled to 2.1 microns particle size in a steel mill and mixed with 20 pct Ni binder. Material A (Fig. 1) shows considerable grain growth. Also evident is a tendency of the carbide grains to coalesce. The density is 98 pct and the low transverse-rupture strength of 111,000 psi is probably caused by many large grains and an unfavorable packing factor. Almost all grains show a slight indication of "coring." Material B (Fig. 2), although showing grain growth, still has many small particles and a better distribution of binder and carbide due to the relative absence of the coalescing tendency. "Coring" can be observed in almost all grains. The high transverse-rupture strength of 179,000 psi and the density of 100 pct are believed to be due to the many small grains completely surrounded by the binder phase. There is also a preference to form spherical grains with material A, while most grains of material B preserve their angular shapes. Material C, of which no picture is given, stays between A and B in every respect. Rounding of some grains can be observed as well as coring, but the latter to a lesser degree than with material B. Its densification is good and the transverse-rupture strength obtained is 142,000 psi. EVER since the technique of quenching metals and alloys from the melt (splat cooling) was perfected a decade ago, it has been recognized that the grain size of products solidified by this technique may be extremely small.' The further observation that fcc metals quenched from the liquid state contain very few dislocations has led to the inference2 that metals are subjected to negligible or no stresses during the rapid solidification characteristic of the "gun" or "piston-and-anvil" technique. Evidence for the incidence of appreciable densities of stacking faults has, however, been obtained in case of some splat-cooled fcc and hcp alloys,3 although not for pure metals. In the light of these earlier observations it was considered desirable to study X-ray line-broadening effects, if any, in fcc metals rapidly cooled from the melt. In the present work pure silver (>99.99 pct), aluminum (>99.99 pct) and lead (>99.9 pct) were quenched from the liquid state from temperatures about 50°C above the melting point by the "gun technique" and the resulting foils were subjected to X-ray examination in a Philips Diffractometer. The quenched foils (up to -10 u thick) did not generally stick to the substrate surface and could be easily transferred to the Diffractometer without introducing any plastic deformation. The profiles of the first five reflections from the foils were recorded in each case with Cu Ka, radiation at the slowest available scanning speed of 1/8 deg per min. To correct for instrumental broadening, profiles were also recorded from the metals annealed in vacuo at suitable temperatures. The integral breadths of the X-ray reflections were arrived at by a procedure described earlier.' There was a distinct suggestion of preferred orientation in the recorded intensities of reflections from aluminum and lead foils. Such an effect was not observed in case of silver. In addition, the integral breadths of X-ray reflections from splat-cooled aluminum and lead were not significantly different from those recorded for the annealed metals. The analysis was therefore continued only for silver where the X-ray line broadening was appreciable. The pure diffraction broadening, B, was evaluated for each X-ray reflection (hkl) from silver from the observed, B, and instrumental, b, breadths with the aid of each of the three equations due to Scherrer,5 Anantharaman and Christian,6 and Warren and Biscoe,7 respectively: Bs= B-b BAC=B- b2/B Table I gives the values of particle size, 71, the lattice strain, E, arrived at by the use of the following well-known relations and on the assumption that all observed diffraction broadening could be attributed to lattice strain or particle size, respectively: E = 1/4 cos ? n= B cos ? where A is the wavelength of X-radiation and 0 is the Bragg angle. As no significant peak shifts or asymmetry could be detected in the profiles from the foils, the possibility of any significant contribution due to twins or stacking faults was ruled out. The absence of faults is by no means surprising since pure silver is known to develop stacking faults only on severe deformation and the stacking fault densities recorded so far for even silver filings have been extremely low.' The very low values for percentage mean deviation from the mean value for the particle size in Table I strongly suggest that all observed broadening in splat-cooled silver can be attributed only to small particle size. This conclusion receives further support from the lowest mean deviation recorded for data computed from the Scherrer equation based on Cauchy profiles that are considered characteristic of particle size broadening. Further analysis for separation of particle size and lattice strain effects was considered unnecessary in view of the very large mean deviations obtained for strain values and also the earlier results suggesting absence of even detectable strain in metals and alloys quenched from the melt. It is to be stressed in this connection that the particles are actually grains and not cells formed by walls of high dislocation density usually encountered in deformed samples. As such, the absence of strains is not surprising. The present results are probably the first to record X-ray line broadening due only to small particle

A study of data obtained during laboratory tests to determine the suitability of bituminous coals for use in residential underfeed stokers of the clinkering type has led to the following general conclusions: 1. Performance data obtained during the test furnish useful and practical information upon which to judge the performance of stoker coals. 2. Conclusions derived from the results of evaluation tests are in general agreement with use experience of the coals in the field. The method is of practical use in this regard. 3. Few direct relationships were found between data furnished by the evaluation test and determinations by standard laboratory tests. This is particularly true with regard to coke formation and clinker formation, two of the most important factors in determining the degree of satisfaction to be obtained in applications of the small underfeed stoker. It has not been the intention in this paper to prescribe this evaluation test as the best method for the evaluation of coals for use in residential stokers. That there are other test methods having similar objectives serves to point out the necessity for full-scale laboratory tests. At the present time, a standard test procedure for the evaluation of coals for use in residential stokers is not available. For the past several years a joint committee, appointed from the membership of the Residential Stoker Committee of Bitulninous Coal Research, Inc., and from the Engineer- ing and Research Committee of The Stoker Manufacturers Association, has been working to develop a standard procedure for testing and evaluating bituminous stoker coals. This procedure has been completed to the extent that it has been drawn up in tentative form. It is now planned to install the equipment in several laboratories and to run check tests, using portions of identical lots of coal, to determine the degree of reproducibility offered by the method. Completion of this standard test procedure should greatly facilitate the evaluation of coals for use in residential stokers. Kaiser*—AS a former fuel engineer assigned to residential stokers at Battelle, the writer has read with considerable interest the paper by Messrs. I'urdy and Nelson. It is gratifying to note that earlier test techniques have been developed and that criteria found important in the years 1935 to 1938 are still important in judging the performance of stoker coals for residential heating. The authors have plotted a number of the primary coal data singly against performance data of the stoker in an effort to establish relationships. Unfortunately, wide scattering of points usually resulted, which did not illustrate what experience generally indicates to be the case. For example, Fig 3 indicates almost no trend in the percentage of released ash converted to clinker with change in ash-softening temperature. Other factors, such as fuel bed temperatures and zones of heat release must have influenced the results. In the present state of our knowledge, we cannot explain all of the reasons why suitable stoker coals perform satisfactorily, nor why one satisfactory coal may be better than another. A mathematical model is presented and solved for determinution of the saturation distribution and pressure in a radial gas-storage reservoir. The model consists basically of two parts: (I) the growing gas-bubble core, and (2) the surrounding aquifer. Since the total pressure at the injection well is a function of the two-phase flow in the gas bubble and the unsteady single-phase flow in the aquifer, the resistance to flow in both zones was taken into consideration. The assumptions involved for both the radial equivalent of the Buckley-Leverett two-phase-flow equation and the injection-pressure equation are as follows: (I) the geometry is radial, (2) the gas bubble is free to expand or contract, (3) compression or expansion of the gas within the bubble may occur at the beginning of a time step, (4) the fluids are immiscible, (5) water is incompressible within the gas-storage region whereas it is compressible outside of this region, (6) a stable gas-water interface exists and (7) gas injection occurs at a constant rate or a series of constant rates. The mathematical model was solved numerically using an IBM 650 computer. A comparison is presented between the predicted results of the model, the results assuming steady-state flow and the actual initial injection-pressure history of an operating reservoir. Using the initial field pressure for a basis, the average deviation between the predicted pressure and the actual field pressure was less than 4.3 per cent. INTRODUCTION Underground storage of natural gas in abandoned oil fields, in abandoned coal mines, in caverns and in aquifers has had varying degrees of success. The lack of these first three facilities in the vicinity of most major gas marketing areas is leading more and more to storage in virgin aquifers. For the most part, this storage in aquifers has led to the study upon which this paper is based. Several excellent papers have been published discussing the problems involved in the underground storage of natural gas; however, to these writers' knowledge, none of them considered the two-phase flow of fluids in the gas bubble and the fact that the gas bubble will grow or shrink in size depending upon the injection and withdrawal history of the reservoir. Not only will both of these factors influence the required injection pressure, but also they will have a definite bearing upon the amount of water production occurring upon withdrawal from the storage area. To solve this problem on an IBM 650 computer, several simplifying assumptions were made. Only the drainage portion of the relative-permeability curve was considered, thereby neglecting any hysteresis effects introduced during an imbibition cycle. The quantity of gas withdrawn during the period of the field study was only a small percentage of the total gas in place; therefore, this assumption is justified. For the problem studied in this case, the combined effects of capillarity and gravity were assumed to be negligible. This assumption becomes less valid as the formation thickness or the average pore diameter increases markedly. The justification of these assumptions should be studied in each case. THEORY This mathematical model for the prediction of saturation distribution and pressure for a radial gas-storage aquifer is based upon the equations for radial two-phase fluid flow'.' and for radial, unsteady-state, single-phase fluid flow.' The two-phase flow is considered to take place in a "core" whose radius is equal to the maximum radius that the gas zone will attain, as indicated in Fig. 1. The injection-withdrawal history is approximated by a series of constant flow rates. Within the "core", gas is assumed to behave as a semi-compressible fluid; that is, the gas is assumed to have a constant density based on the average gas-zone pressure for the flow period. Between each constant-rate time increment, the gas density is allowed to change. This involves an iterative solution of the pressure equation. The liquid phase in this zone is considered to be incompressible, whereas it behaves as a compressible liquid outside of this region. The equilibrium vapors established over Fe-Cr-Ni alloys containing up to 50 pct Cr at 1600°C were determined by collecting the effusate from thoria Knud-sen cells. From these data, the activities of iron and nickel in the ternary alloys have been calculated. In a separate set of measurements, a mass spectrometer was used to determine the activities of the three components in a series of Fe-Cr-Ni alloys. In binary Ni-Cr melts, the activity coefficient of chromium referred to pure solid chromium as standard state is less than one at low chromium contents but is greater than one for melts containing more than 30 at. pct Cr. For Ni-Cr melts containing less than 10 at. pct Cr, In ?Cr = 0.15-0.92 N2. Ternary activity diagrams for Fe-Cr-Ni alloys are presented. In iron-rich alloys, the interactions between the three components are negligible; however, in nickel-rich alloys, the three principal interactions have significant positive values. THE activities of components in binary Fe-Ni alloys have been measured both in the solid solution1-3 and liquid solution4-6 temperature ranges. The determination for Fe-Ni melts have been made by three different methods: transpiration,4 Knudsen-cell effusion with analysis of an accumulated condensate,' and Knudsen-cell effusion with direct measurements of relative component intensities by mass spectrometric methods.6 The results obtained by the three different methods in three different laboratories are in excellent agreement and considerable confidence is placed in the activity coefficients for Fe-Ni melts. At 1600°C, the activity coefficients in dilute solution are ?°Ni = 0.66 and ?oFe = 0.40 for the pure liquid components as standard states. Measurements made on solid solution Fe-Cr alloys7-10 indicate that the component activities are slightly greater than ideal. The measured activities in iron-rich Fe-Cr liquid alloy11-16 indicate almost ideal behavior for this system. The recommended activity coefficient of chromium in dilute solution in liquid iron at 1600o C, ?oCr, is 1.18 when referred to pure solid chromium as standard state and 1.04 when referred to pure undercooled liquid chromium as standard state." The conversion factor of 1.14 is based on a melting point of 1857°C and an enthalpy of melting of 4047 cal per g at. for chromium.21,37 The activity coefficient of iron in dilute solution in liquid chromium has not been measured. Activity measurements on solid Ni-Cr alloys have been made by several investigators.17-20 During the review of this manuscript, Fruehan12 published the results of a study on liquid Ni-Cr alloys at 1600°C. He used galvanic cells22 with ZrO2(CaO) as the electrolyte and Cr/Cr2O3 for the reference electrode. His results indicate that ?oCr in nickel at 1600°C is about 1.01 when referred to pure solid chromium and about 0.89 when referred to pure undercooled liquid chromium as standard state. The activity coefficient of nickel in liquid chromium is unknown. The compositions of vapors freely evaporating from some molten Fe-Cr-Ni alloys have been measured by Lyubimov, Granovskaya, and Berenstein.23 Their results, combined with known vapor pressures, indicate strong positive deviation for chromium in iron-rich alloys and strong negative deviation for chromium in nickel-rich alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES This research was undertaken to determine the activities of components in ternary Fe-Cr-Ni melts containing up to 50 at. pct Cr. At the initiation of the research, we decided to use a Knudsen-cell method wherein a portion of the effusing vapor is condensed on a cold plate.' The composition of the equilibrium vapor for each alloy composition is determined in this method by holding the system under constant conditions for a period of time sufficient to collect enough condensate on the cold plate for chemical analysis. The activities of components in ternary alloys can be calculated from such vapor composition determinations by Eq. [1].24

A T THE meeting of the Board of Directors on June 24, Prof. Heinrich O. Hofman was elected an honorary member of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Professor Hofman is best known to the world at large for his publications, and in this respect he is to this generation what Schnabel was to the previous one. The first edition of Professor Hofman's "Metallurgy of Lead and Desilverization of Base Bullion"; was published in 1893; the fifth edition in 1898. In 1913, he published his work on "General Metallurgy;" this was followed by "Metallurgy of Copper" in 1914, and a revised and enlarged edition of the "Metallurgy of Lead" in 1918. "Metallurgy of Zinc and Cadmium" is now in press. He also published, through the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, "An Outline of the Metallurgy of Iron and Steel" for students' use. Since the founding of "Mineral Industry" in 1892, he has been continuously the annual contributor on the metallurgy of lead, and all Institute members know that his contributions to the TRANSACTIONS have been liberal in the extreme. It is through this medium that the results of the extensive research work, which he has always carried on in connection with his work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, have been published. Of the greatest importance are his papers dealing with the formation temperatures of slags, but many other metallurgical subjects have been covered.

IN experiments on tantalum strained in tension, Bechtold did not observe deformation-twinning even at a temperature as low as that of liquid air.' This is an unexpected behavior for a metal of body-centered-cubic structure. Therefore, it is desirable to determine whether the lack of twinning is an inherent characteristic of this particular metal, or whether the reluctance to twin can be overcome under suitable conditions. The following experiments were performed under conditions favorable to twinning and cleavage in their competition with slip, namely, with impact loading on large-grained sheet at low temperatures. The crystallography of cleavage in tantalum sheet was also investigated carefully because of the remarkable ductility of tantalum at low temperatures and because recent tests on oxygen-embrittled tantalum had disclosed unusual cleavage behavior for a metal of this structure: cleavage primarily on (110) planes and only occasionally on {100}.2 The tantalum, supplied by Fansteel, was of 99.9 pet purity, with the chief impurities being iron (0.03 pet) and carbon (0.03 pet). Coarse grains were produced by the strain-anneal method, the anneal being 4 hr at 2000°C in a vacuum of 10-3 mm Hg, followed by furnace cooling. Impact deformation was applied in various ways: a) by hammer blows on an anvil, the specimen and anvil being immersed in liquid nitrogen ( —196°C), b) by driving a precooled center-punch into the sheet, and c) by bending around a crystallographically determined axis with a hammer blow. The impact-deformation produced bands and slip lines on the surface, Fig. 1. The bands have every appearance of being deformation twins, a) They are tilted with respect to the untwinned surface. b) They have the appearance of Neumann bands in iron, thin lens shape, some having serrated edges. c) The orientation in each is different from that of the surrounding matrix and uniform within a given band, see slip lines within them in Fig. 1. d) Upon repolishing and etching, the difference in orientation and the resemblance to Neumann bands is again evident, Fig. 2. (In this micrograph the slight bend in the bands as they cross grain boundaries was noted frequently and results from the high degree of preferred orientation in the sheet.) e) The bands persist after annealing treatments that would have removed them had they been a low-temperature martensitic phase, e.g., after an anneal of 1/2 hr at 900°C. When back-reflection Laue data were plotted for single-surface analysis of several grains, every trace of the bands in each grain could be explained by (112) planes. In addition, two of the bands were located in space by traces on two surfaces, and these also were found to lie on (112) planes within the error of the stereographic plot. Since (1 12) is the anticipated composition plane for deformation twins in body-centered-cubic metals it is felt that the observations listed above are conclusive evidence for the identification of the bands as twins. Similar tests with impact at —77° and at 25°C produced no twinning. It is concluded that the critical shear stress for slip at the rates of straining used was always low enough to prevent the applied stress from reaching the value required for twinning at these temperatures. It was noted that the serrations along the edges of the twin bands exhibited parallel crystal facets. Several similarly oriented notches are visible in Fig. 1, and a remarkable set is shown in Fig. 3. It appears from Fig. 1 and similar areas that notches are frequently associated with the intersection of a slip line with a twin, although not all such intersections are at notches. In some instances a slip line appears to enter the twin, cross it, reflect from the opposite side and recross it, producing a pattern resembling a notch but without producing the notch itself, see Fig. 1. It is suggested that the stress concentration at the end of a slip line is responsible for these details. The strain energy associated with the pile-up of dislocations at a twin boundary may be lessened by untwin-ning or failing to twin a portion of the twin band, or

The discovery of gold in the Toodoggone River area is credited to Charles McClair who mined placer deposits in 1925, reportedly valued at $17,500. After he and his partner went missing in 1927, efforts to relocate their workings resulted in the formation of Two Brothers Valley Gold Mines Ltd. in 1933, in which the legendary Grant McConachie (first president of CP Air) played an active role. This was the age when the prospector first utilized the airplane to reconnoitre remote areas. What greeted the observer from the air was an area rich in orange and yellow colours characteristic of gossans formed by the oxidation of sulphides. However, Samuel Black, a Hudson Bay Company fur trader, had also noted in his diary as early as 1824, the unusual and many gossanous colours in the headwaters of the Finlay River. These gossans, coupled with white limestone bluffs and the presence of placer gold, attracted the first reconnaissance of the area by Cominco in 1929. Cominco was ever active in remote areas at this time. They staked and worked several base-metal showings hosted by limestone at the margins of intrusive stocks. These early workers also obtained erratic high gold assays from chalcedony float samples found in creeks draining into the Toodoggone River. However, because the samples gave inconsistent assays, no concerted effort was made to locate their source. Except for the occasional horse-supported prospecting party of the late 1940s and early 1950s, the area did not receive much attention until 1968. Work until this time focused on the base metal lead-zinc showings which contained attractive silver credits. Gold was not an attraction because of the set price established by the US government. The late 1960s saw the northward expansion of porphyry copper exploration into the Toodoggone. A program of gossan soil sampling (gossans which had attracted the early workers) was carried out by Kennco Explorations (Western) Ltd. in 1966-1967. They analysed for base metals in the field, using a cold extraction method. The Kemess copper- gold prospect was staked as a result of anomalous copper values from this early geochemical program. In 1968, Kennco continued the program of silt traversing and field geochemical testing. The samples were further subjected to multielement analysis consisting of copper, molybdenum, lead, zinc, cobalt, nickel, and silver at Kennco's North Vancouver laboratory. Several anomalous creeks, high in combinations of copper, molybdenum, and silver, were outlined. Some initial soil grids were also established. The fall of 1969 saw the return of Kennco prospector Gordon Davies and geologist Bob Stevenson to check out a well-defined molybdenum, scattered copper and silver anomaly in soils from a grid on the Chappelle claims. The subsequent analysis of several selected quartz felsenmeer floats yielded one assay which ran in the order of 0.25 kg/t (8 oz per st) gold and 2.2 kg/t (70 oz per st) silver. Subsequent trenching on the Chappelle claims exposed the source of float in a 4- m (134) wide vein of high grade gold-silver mineralization. These results led quickly to the realization that the district had precious metal potential. Subsequent exploration in the period 1969-1974 by Kennco resulted in the discovery of most of the gold and silver occurrences on the Chappelle and Lawyers properties. Several other gold and silver occurrences were found in this district by Cordilleran, Cominco, and Sumitomo, working the district during this period. Conwest optioned the Chappelle in 1973 and explored underground by adit entry as part of a one-year program. In 1974, Du Pont of Canada Exploration Ltd. optioned the Chappelle claims and in March 1980, using reserves developed on the A vein, placed the Baker mine into production at a rate of 90.7 Vd (100 stpd). The Amethyst zone on the Lawyers property, 8 km (5 miles) north of Chappelle, was found in 1973 by Kennco using continued, persistent followup prospecting of silver silt geochemical anomalies. IN August 1954 a low altitude test geophysical survey was made in the Green Pond area of Morris County, New Jersey, with a Gulf Research and Development Co. Model II total magnetic field variation magnetometer mounted in a Sikorsky S-55 helicopter. The test was made in this area to compare the results of a high precision, very low altitude magnetometer survey with an existing ground magnetic survey in this area having known magnetite concentrations, so that the method could be used in areas of difficult access for the detailing of airborne magnetometer anomalies of interest in place of ground surveys. The load capacity of the Sikorsky S-55 permitted installation of a recording scintillation counter so that a radioactivity survey would be made simultaneously with the magnetometer survey. The area surveyed is located at approximately 41°00'N and 74o28'W, just south and east of the town of Green Pond, N. J. The outstanding topographic feature of the region is Copperas Mountain, a well defined ridge, maximum elevation 1222 ft, which runs the entire length of the survey. The lowest point in the survey, 810 ft, is in the extreme eastern corner. Topography of the area is shown in Fig. 1. The three major rock units outcropping in the area are all metamorphic: the Pochuck gneiss, which has been divided into two metamorphic facies; the Byram gneiss; and the Green Pond conglomerate. The relative ages of the Pochuck and Byram formations, both pre-Cambrian, are in doubt, but it is believed that the Pochuck is the older of the two.' The Green Pond conglomerate is Silurian.' Distribution of the outcrops and mine locations is shown in Fig. 1. Two facies of the Pochuck gneiss can be distinguished locally—the Copperas Mountain and Kitchell members. The Copperas Mountain member is a hornblende gneiss, and all the mines and prospects in the area are in this unit. The Kitchell is a quartz-plagioclase feldspar gneiss. The Byram gneiss is a relatively nonresistant valley formation which is high in the potash feldspar. The Green Pond conglomerate is a well indurated quartzite-conglomerate which forms the Copperas Mountain and the Green Pond Mountain's ridge to the north. It overlies the gneisses with a strong angular discordance that may be a fault. The geologic structure of the Green Pond area is relatively uncomplicated. The foliation planes of the gneisses dip steeply to the southeast, and the Green Pond conglomerate dips steeply to the northwest. Additional faulting in the area is indicated at the contact between the Kitchell member of the Pochuck and the Byram along the base of the topographic spur extending to the southeast from Copperas Mountain. The magnetite mines of Pardee, Winter, Davenport, Green Pond, Copperas, and the Bancroft shaft are described by Bayleyl and Stampe2.' The ore is in the Copperas Mountain member of the Pochuck gneiss. The magnetite veins are 10 to 50 ft wide and up to 300 ft long, dipping to the southeast at angles ranging from 40" to 75". The locations of these mines are shown in Fig. 1. Dip Needle Survey: The dip needle survey shown in Fig. 2 was taken from a U. S. Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations." The figure numbers below the local, individual map area outlines refer to the figures in the aforementioned reports which were not contoured. The area of the dip needle survey was confined almost exclusively to the outcrops of the Pochuck gneiss. The separation between survey profiles was 100 ft and the distance between stations on the profiles was 25 ft in highly anomalous zones to 100 ft in magnetically flat areas. A total of 16 1/2 miles of traverse was surveyed over an area of approximately 1/2 sq mile with 2050 stations. The magnitude of the magnetic anomalies is difficult to determine due to the lack of information concerning the type of dip needle used and the procedure followed in making the dip needle survey. This latter would include the method of "zeroing" the dip needle and the procedure of reading at the stations, whether on the swing or statically. Calibrations made of the Gurley dip needle, Lake Superior type, show a static sensitivity of 385 gamma per degree in the range from —25" to +35o, corresponding to a variation in the total field of —9600 gamma to +13500 gamma in a total field of 57000 gamma, inclination 72". The sensitivity increases to 16 gamma per degree from a deflection of 60" to 76", and from 76" to 172" the sensitivity decreases continuously to a low of 260 gamma per degree. From the above it may be seen that it is difficult to assign an arbitrary sensitivity for the dip needle used on this survey. However, an estimated value of 100 gamma per degree may be assigned. On this basis, the majority of the magnetic anomalies, whose deviation is +20°, would be 2000 gamma. Locally, west and northwest of the Pardee mine the magnetic anomaly is +50°, or 5000 gamma; in the Green Pond mine area deviations of +75" are observed that would correspond to anomalies of 7500 gamma. The areal extent and width of the dip needle magnetic anomalies is comparable to profile and station spacing. Hence it is concluded that part of the detail may be due to control, and the probable cause of the magnetic anomalies is at or near surface exposures of magnetite concentrations in the form of veinlets and disseminations whose locations correspond to the local magnetic anomalies. The structures formed when austenite is quenched to subcritical temperatures and allowed to transform isothermally have been the subject of intensive study since the work of Davcnport and Bain.' Isothermal transformation diagrams summarizing the results of many of these studies have become widely familiar to metallurgists. Of particular interest to metallographers are the dark-etchingl acicular products of transformation formed by isothermal reaction below the temperature of maximum velocity of the austenite to pearlite reaction. These products, the bainite structures, can he formed in a wide variety of steels. However, the constitution of bainite is not well understood and divergent views have been expressed as to its mode of formation. In this investigation a combination of dilatometric, microscopic and X-ray methods has been brought to bear upon the problem in the hope of some elucidation of the bainite reaction as it occurs in hypo-eutectoid steels. Mechanism OF Bainite Formation Davenport and Bainl considered the mechanism of bainite formation to consist of two steps—an allotropic transformation followed by precipitation of carbide. The separation in time of the two processes was considered to be very slight in the upper temperature range and very marked at temperatures just above the martensite range. This concept has been restated by Vilella, Guellich and Bain2 in the form of a definition of the acicular mode of transformation as: The successive, abrupt formation of flat plates of supersaturated ferrite along certain crystallographic planes of the austenite grains; this supersaturated ferrite begins at once to reject carbide palticles, (not lamellae), at a rate depending upon temperature In effect, this is the acicular mode of transformation, even though the temperature be such as to limit the actual life of the quasi-martensite to millionths of a second. The investigation of isothermal decomposition of austenite in certain alloy steels (notably those containing chromium or molybdenum) has revealed that there may be a range of temperatures between the pearlite and bainite reactions in which the austenite decomposes at a relatively low rate.3-6 Further, it is characteristic that in the second region of fast reaction the decomposition of the austenite is incomplete by one reaction but goes to completion by a second reaction. These observations led Wever7 to a description of the bainite reaction as follows: I. The reaction takes place by initial precipi. tation of a martensitic intermediate structure. 2. In the upper temperature range this structure readily decomposes into ferrite and cementite. In the lower range carbon separates in an unknown form. 3. In the upper temperature range the precipitated carbide nucleates the precipitation
