On Saturday evening, Sept. 27, immediately following the Chicago meeting of the Institute, the former students of Dr. T. C. Chamberlain, for 27 years head of the Department of Geology at the University of Chicago, will hold a dinner in his honor. Dr. Chamberlain has recently retired with the title of Professor Emeritus, and expects to celebrate his 76th birthday in September. Drilling in Missouri in 1939 was marked by wildcatting in the northern half of the state. The total completions numbered 82, exactly half the 164 of 1938. There were 15 gas wells with an initial open flow of 6,383,150 cu. ft., 4 oil wells with about 40 bbl. initial production, and 63 dry holes. The wildcatting followed the widely publicized leasing activity in the Forrest City Basin in northwestern Missouri, northeastern Kansas, southeastern Nebraska and southwestern Iowa. The Institute should feel honored that one of its distinguished members, Auguste J. Rossi, has been awarded the Perkin Medal of the Society of Chemical Industry. The medal was presented at a meeting of the New York Section of the Society on Jan. 18, at the Chemists' Club. Mr. F. A. J. Fitzgerald, Past President of the American Electrochemical Society; described the work of Mr. Rossi, while the presentation address was delivered by William H. Nichols, Past President of the Society of Chemical Industry.

The purpose of the Auxiliary is to build for all time and it therefore wishes to lay its foundations securely, feeling that the true understanding and adoption of the ideals of Americanism are the safeguards of our country from the perils of anarchy, and the bond of union between labor, brains, and capital. The Howe Memorial Lecture, in memory of Henry Marion Howe, Past President of the Institute, was authorized in April, 1923, as an annual address to be delivered by invitation under the auspices of the Institute by an individual of recognized and out standing attainment in the science and practice of iron and steel metallurgy or metallography, chosen by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of the Iron and Steel Division. The many factors that control bumping must be carefully studied for each coal seam where bumps occur, and specifications known to exclude bumping should be incorporated in the mining plans. This calls for complete knowledge of the seam's characteristics and its adjacent strata, and in many instances these characteristics are not revealed until the seam is actually mined. Pressure and shock bumps, the two general types, occur jointly and separately. In this discussion no differentiation will be made. Whether pressure or shock, they are treated as bumps, and both must be eliminated.

THE tense international situation prevailing in the postwar period, and the outbreak of actual hostilities in Korea, directs attention to the status of United States reserves of strategic and critical materials for war. Geologists and mining and metallurgical engineers are particularly interested in this problem, since, with a few important exceptions, almost all of the materials on the official list of strategic and critical materials for stockpiling (see top of page) are metals and minerals.

(written discussion*).-As a sup-plement to the information given by Mr. Bash, a diagram is submitted showing the results of a somewhat similar experiment carried out at the ordnance plant of the Standard Steel Works Co. In this case the ingot to be heated was a nickel-steel octagon ingot, weighing 14,700 lb. (6667 kg.). This ingot was to be forged into two 255-mm. howitzer jackets. A hole was bored half way of the length of the ingot, extending into the longitudinal axis, and a base-metal thermocouple inserted in this hole.

Mining headlines in 1952 dealt mainly with expansion as the industry aimed for an ever increasing production to meet the nation's needs. Huge sums were expended for equipment, research, and development. Headlines told part of the story. Negotiations between San Manuel Copper Co. and the RFC finally resolved in a $94 million loan for the development of low grade Arizona ores. Magma Copper, parent firm was to supply an additional 8 million. Kennecott Copper Co., deepening its Deep Ruth Shaft of its Ruth, Neyy mine, announced that the shaft would be in full production in 1953.

This contribution illustrates the application of the theory of period doubling to the description of the formation of microcracks in rocks. The fundamental mathematics is described and a method of prediction is proposed. The invariance (universal constants) of a generic microfracturing (damage) process is described. Finally, the method is presented as a deterministic method of predicting the failure of an engineering material while keeping track of the amount of damage that has occured at any point.

The writers are to be congratulated for their excellent paper on a subject dear to the hearts of manufacturers of cold rolled sheets. Gary Works produces rimmed steel ingots up to 53,000 pounds teemed 91 inches high in 31 x 84 inch molds. By the writers' definition, this puts us in the small mold category, and a comparison of their adopted melt shop practice with our established rimmed steel practice discloses not a dime's worth of difference between us. This should give comfort to the writers for we at Gary have- never encountered the frequency of white line rejections as described in their paper.
