Drilling for oil and gas in Missouri continued at a slightly lower rate than has been prevailing. A summary of operations for the past few years as compiled and published by the Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources is as follows: Two oil pools are being developed in Cass County. Neither area has been drilled completely, and detailed descriptions will not be given at this time. In the Endicott pool in the southern part of T. 44 N., R. 33 W., oil is found in the Warrensburg sand, which is now considered to be the Big Lake sand of eastern Kansas. The top of the sand is about 125 ft. below the Herthalimestone. The best well is reported to have made 14 bbl. per day for the first four days. The oil is 30" to 32' BB. gravity. This is the only pool in the state, aside from the older areas on the east and west edges of Lees Summit, Jackson County, that is producing oil from the Warrensburg sand. Drilling continues in the Knoche pool in the central part of T. 46 N., R. 33 W., where the oil is found in the Squirrel sand. The oil produced by both these pools is sold by truck in Kansas City.

The occurrence of the manganiferous variety of wolframite at a new locality in Arizona was announced in the month of May last." It occurs in the granite hills of the Dragoon mountains, in Cochise county, about 6 miles north of Dragoon Summit station, on the Southern Pacific Railway of Arizona. It is found in veins of white quartz, traversing a coarsely crystalline granitic gneiss, and, so far as yet determined, is without association with other metallic minerals in the same veins, except small quantities of scheelite. It is a very pure form of the mineral, and contains but little iron, the base being manganese oxide. The color is brownish-red; it is nearly the same as the color of the mineral originally described by E. Riotte from Mammoth District, Nevada.† Thin films or plates on the broad cleavage-surfaces, and thin cleavage-flakes, seen by transmitted light, are ruby-red, or rather more like the color of red zinc oxide or the mineral known as clintonite. Both drilling and production in Rumania showed increases in 1934 over 1933. The drilling totaled 1,138,000 ft. and production 63,500,-000 bbl., being increases of 50 and 15 per cent, respectively. During the year production gradually increased from 155,000 bbl. per day in January to 180,000 bbl. in September, and then declined slightly to the end of the year. The increases were largely due to competitive drilling in the Gura Ocnitei field (including west extension to Viforata). Wells completed during the year totaled 238, of which 215 were oil producers. The outstanding development of the year was the discovery by Steaua Romana of what appears to be a major field at Bucsani. Other important discoveries were a three-mile west extension of the Gura Ocnitei fault to Viforata and a five-mile east extension of the Moreni field to Calinesti. Strictly speaking, the latter cannot as yet be called an extension. Oil sands have been corded in the Meotic, and in all probability production will be established in 1935. The first light of dawn was appearing through the window of the giant Pan American Boeing 747 as we crossed the Irish Coast on course into London's Heathrow Airport While still over Ireland, the plane began its descent and a few minutes later an announcement on the public address system informed us that we were coming up on Lands End. Cornwall, and would then begin our final approach into London. Barely visible below through the WISP). clouds were the Seven Sisters Lighthouse and the rugged cliffs of Lands End and Cape Cornwall, the westcrnmost point of England. Start at Lands End To a displaced Englishman, it seems amazing that technology has brought us to a point where large jet aircraft use Lands End as the starting marker for final approaches into London. It was not so very long ago that we considered the eight-hour car journey or the 12- hour train trip from London to Lands End as a major undertaking. Today, with the 180,000-lb thrust of four engines, this enormous aircraft transports 350 or more passengers that distance in a matter of a quarter of an hour. The incongruity of the situation is that the technology leading up to the development of the powerful jet engines used on: today's aircraft started with the ; invention of the steam engine which found its first commercial use some 300 years earlier in the mines of Cornwall 20,000 ft below.

The regular meeting of the Trustees of United Engineering Society was called to order at 4 P. M. Thursday, Feb. 27, 1919, in the Board Room of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Engineering Societies' Building, New York. Minutes of a joint meeting of the Finance Committee of United Engineering Society with finance committees of Founder Societies on Feb. 14, were presented. The President called attention to actions relating to the recataloging of the Library and the support of Engineering Societies Employment Bureau of Engineering Council. The activity of the Employment Bureau was approved and support by the Societies informally assured. In response to a communication from the Fifth Avenue Association, the Secretary was instructed to write favoring the continuance of the daylight saving law. As to recataloging of Engineering Societies Library, it was announced that the Mining, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineers had voted appropriations, as requested, and the action of the Civil Engineers was awaited. A list of applications for offices in Engineering Societies' Building, revised to Feb. 27, was read, showing requests for a total of 29 rooms. The President stated that a decision must be reached soon as to what reply shall he made to these applications. Charles F. Scott, one of the original trustees, who was present, remarked upon the growth of United Engineering Society and his satisfaction at its success. ALFRED D. FLINN, Secretary.

The Marine Corps has found the Mining and Sapping Department one of the most efficient individual organizations of the Soldiers of the Sea. The men of the unit were assembled among "hard rock" miners from Montana, Idaho, and Utah; most of the detachment hail from Butte. It includes experienced gas-helmet men, blacksmiths, compressors, carpenters, timbermen, concrete and cement gun experts, diamond drill runners, civil and mining engineers, in fact, artisans of every craft in and around mines. Experienced miners with both technical college training in mining and engineering and the practical turn of actual work as mine superintendents and foremen are used as instructors in their craft, except thirty-eight who "shoved off" with the Eleventh Regiment to actually apply their skill in Marine trenches abroad. They are the "finishers" after the trenches are dug. Covering and camouflaging the tops for protection against attacks from the air, engineering the arrangement of the trenches for protection against shell fire, establishing listening posts by projecting "Russian saps" within a few yards of the enemy's trench; sapping or tunnelling into the very lines of the Teutons, and leaving pleasant little bundles of explosives there; are just a few of the high spots touched by these wizards of the soil. They make the trenches comfortable, plastering the interiors until the underground bunk houses not only look like hotels but are just as comfortable "with all the modern conveniences." Draining is another feature which the work of the Miners and Sappers at least partially assures.

Because common salt, sodium chloride, is necessary to all animal and much plant life, it is probably the most widely used of all mineral commodities, except for water. Nevertheless, of the total salt consumed, only 7% is used for food, including animal food. Two-thirds of the total is used as chemical raw material, principally for making such basic chemicals as chlorine, caustic soda, and soda ash. Other uses are for road thawing (16%) and water softening. Some 162.5 million tons of salt were used, worldwide, in 1972 (Table 15.4F.1). Production is from bedded salt deposits, salt domes, and evaporation of brines, including solar evaporation of seawater. Production is worldwide from at least 20 countries, of which the United States, China, USSR, the United Kingdom, and West Germany are the leaders. Consumption increases about 7 % annually. Reserves are plentiful: Other important sodium salts are soda ash (sodium carbonate) and salt cake (sodium sulfate). Soda ash comes mainly from the Solvay process (70% ) , which uses salt, limestone, and ammonia as raw materials. A large and growing portion of United States production is from mining large bedded deposits of trona, a natural hydrated sodium carbonate and bicarbonate found in Wyoming, and from brine evaporation in California. Soda ash is used for glassmaking, phenol, soap, detergents, and bleaches. Half of the United States salt cake used is a byproduct from rayon manufacturing. The other half comes from brines and playa lakes in California, Texas, and Wyoming. Salt cake is used mainly for papermaking. ACKNOWLEDGMENT Appreciation is expressed to William B. It formulates for students the system of logic and reasoning that is the mark of the practicing engineer. The three chapters are, "The Method of Engineering", "Application of the Engineering Method" and "Uncertainties in Engineering." They cover logic and reasoning, terms, nontechnical problems, practical conditions controlling the engineering method, inescapable uncertainties and the method of coping with them. The author is emeritus professor of civil engineering at Stanford. The material presented here formed chapters 9, 10, and 11 of The Engineering Profession, by Hoover and Fish, second edition 1950. Elements of Ore Dressing. By Arthur F. Taggart. John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York, 1950. $10.- A modern and practical introduction to the subject by the noted author of the Handbook of Mineral Dressing. The philosophy that a mill and all its parts comprise a single treatment process is a continuing theme in the book. Professor Taggart covers hand picking, screening, filtration, and electrical concentration. After introducing sedimentation, he takes up acceleration in free-settling, hindered-settling, sink-float, jigging, film and trough concentrators and shaking concentrators. A discussion of organic chemicals in flotation is followed by a detailed treatment of flotation. Final chapters deal with primary crushing, secondary crushing, grinding, transport, and controls and flowsheets.

RECENTLY spectrophotometry has been reported to provide a convenient technique for the rapid and reproducible determination of xanthate concentration in pulp solutions,12 and for a kinetic study of xanthate decomposition in acid solutions." Since the application of this analytical technique is feasible for those compounds showing pronounced light absorption maxima in the near ultraviolet region, it was deemed advisable to investigate the absorption spectra of some of the organic compounds that are used in flotation. It is known empirically that certain groups of atoms in an organic compound cause characteristic light absorption in the ultraviolet and near ultraviolet range, and the wavelengths and intensities of the corresponding absorption maxima are relatively independent of the nature of the remainder of the compound. The characteristic values of such groups, which are known as chromophores, are given in the literature.4,5 According to this information, many of the sulphydryl compounds are expected to show absorption maxima in the near or long wavelength ultraviolet region, whereas the saturated fatty acids and the saturated alkylamines do not. This article reports the absorption spectra of the six following types of sulphydryl compounds; mono-, di-(xanthate), and trithiocarbonates, dithiocarba-mate, dithiophosphate (aerofloat), and mercaptan. A Beckman DU quartz spectrophotometer was used to investigate the spectra in the wavelength region of 215 to 350mp. Materials: All the mono-, di-, and trithiocarbonates used in this investigation were prepared in the usual manner" from appropriate compounds obtained from Eastman Distillation Product Industries. The dithiocarbonates included the normal alkyl compounds from methyl to octyl inclusive, as well as the isopropyl, isobutyl, and isoamyl xanthates. The management of The Union Pacific Coal Co., which operates a group of coal mines in Southern Wyoming, believes in the value of applied psychology as a productive factor in the work of getting out coal. Operating almost wholly through the medium of mechanical loading machinery, the company has for some years paid a bonus, equivalent to one-half the labor saving made above a determined average output per shift worked, on a given machine. No penalty is attached where the established output is not obtained, but in 1933 the men on one class of machines earned an average premium of $0.633 per shift on 56.4 per cent of the tonnage loaded. On another class of machine, the men earned an average premium of $0.686 per shift on 28.4 per cent of the tonnage loaded An increase of 36 per cent in tons loaded per man-shift has resulted since the program was instituted. This coal company has also been very successful in reducing mine accidents through prizes awarded in an unusual way. At the close of the year, every man whose particular mine section passes through the year without a lost-time accident is given a ticket entitling him to participate in a safety drawing where an automobile is awarded as first prim.. There are also a number of cash safety prizes which are similarly awarded. Some 1500 persons attend the drawing, which excites much interest and attention. The particular plan employed, the payment of production bonus awards and safety prizes, is foundationed upon collective. rather than individual effort, and, once gotten under way, has proved to be substantlally self-cnforcing.

"The Great Falls of the Missouri are situated about 12 miles below the City of Great Falls and development work for the utilization of the power which they afford is now in progress. The natural fall is about 77 feet.The development will consist of a concrete dam 1,000 feet long on the crest line, and 73 feet high. The power house will be set below the present falls near the north end and the tailrace will be cut below an island which is situated just below the falls. The maximum head will be 153 feet. The power house will contain six units of 15,000 horse power each. The construction as contemplated will comprise about 180,000 cubic yards of concrete work, using 200,000 barrels of cement."

BY now application of the liquid-solid cyclone to various classification problems in the chemical and metallurgical fields is more or less familiar. A less publicized application receiving wider consideration as time goes on is its use as a classifier in closed-circuit grinding operations. This paper presents the costs involved and the experience gained from operating a unit of this kind. In May 1951 the Tennessee Copper Co. installed in its London mill at Copperhill, Tenn., a liquid- solid cyclone in closed circuit with a 6x12-ft ball mill. The circuit in which this cyclone is used is the regrind or secondary grinding circuit of a copper flotation plant. Originally it consisted of a 7x1-ft conical ball mill in closed circuit with a bowl classifier. Changes made in the primary grinding circuit of the mill necessitated a regrind circuit of greater capacity. The bulk concentrate to be ground was raised from 900 or 1000 tpd to 1200 or 1300 tpd, and to accommodate this increase a 6x12-ft ball mill which had been in the primary grinding circuit was moved into the regrind circuit. When this was done it was found that the classifier was too small to give efficient operation. Space in the plant was at a premium, and since use of the cyclone offered considerable economy the installation shown in Figs. 1-3 was made.

At their last meeting, the Directors of the Institute passed the following resolution regarding Robert W. Hunt, who was president of the Institute in 1883 and 1906. This resolution was engrossed and presented to Captain Hunt at a dinner given to him in Chicago, December 9, on the occasion of his eightieth birthday. Resolution At that time it was announced that $5000 had been guaranteed as the nucleous of a fund, the income of which will be used for prizes to be awarded each year, under the supervision of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, for the best papers on iron and steel subjects. The Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers extend to their distinguished colleague, Robert W. Hunt, a hearty greeting upon his eightieth birthday anniversary. They congratulate him upon his notable achievements as a pioneer in ,the manufacture of iron and steel, and his long and admirable service both as a practical director and as a wise critic and counselor in that art. They remember with gratitude his successful administration, for two separate periods, of the Presidency of the Institute, and they recall with pride the honor conferred upon it through the award to him of the John Fritz Gold Medal. Not least is their satisfaction in the retrospect of forty-four years of his membership in the Institute, with its unbroken record of loyal friendship acid delightful companionship; and they pray, that this record may be continued for happy years to come. In witness whereof, they have ordered this minute to be entered upon the records of the Board, and a copy duly attested to be sent to Captain Hunt.

Every engineer has occasion to trace or copy a map, plan, or other drawing on paper too thick for the ordinary way of using tracing-cloth or tracing-paper. When the figure is small and simple a copy may be made by holding the original against a window-pane, coverin& it with the paper, and tracing direct by the aid of the strong sunlight from outside. The need of utilizing this principle on a larger scale and in a more convenient position led Dr. J. C. Branner to plan the table of which the following is a description : This table was first made in the form of an adjustable glass-top table with a mirror beneath, in 1887, while Dr. Branner was State Geologist of Arkansas. Later it was modified as experience suggested until the form as here described was evolved. The device consists essentially of a drafting-table with a plate-glass top, upon which the original drawing and the paper are laid, and a mirror mounted underneath to reflect the light of the sky up through the drawing. The glass top is hinged and fitted with two arms and thumb-screws, so that it can be raised and fixed to any position, either inclined or horizontal. The mirror is pivoted and revolves about a horizontal axis, so that it may be tilted to any angle. The hood of cardboard or black cloth prevents the reflection of light from the tracing, and may or may not be attached to the table.

John R. Lucas was born Apr. 15, 1866, at St. Louis, Mo. From his 19th year until his death on his 51st birthday anniversary, he was engaged in the mining industry, in which, however, he made his beginning and achieved his progress after a somewhat unusual fashion. Presumably without previous training as a mining engineer, he became in April, 1885, and remained until the end of 1892, bookkeeper of the Granite Metal Mining Co. at its St. Louis office. Then for a year he served as bookkeeper of the same company at its mine in Montana. This official of a mining company is at the very heart of its operations; and if he possesses ambition and intelligence, may learn the business thoroughly. It is not surprising, therefore, that Mr. Lucas, being that kind of man, assumed, in 1894, a position with the Hope Mining Co., another St. Louis corporation operating in Montana, which he retained for eight years, serving not only in the office, but becoming also successively mill foreman and assayer. This varied practical experience prepared him for important administrative functions. From April, 1902, he was for many years the business agent of the Goodhope Mining Co. In 1903, he became also the assistant superintendent of the Granite Bi-metallic Consolidated Mining Co., and subsequently its superintendent-a position which he retained until his health failed at the end of 1916. In addition to the other Granite Bi-metallic properties, he had charge of the sapphire mines in the west fork of Rock Creek, Mont., the Basin Gulch placer mines, the claims of the former Hope Co., etc., all of which he managed with skill, integrity and recognized business ability.

At this time, when electricity in its various applications is attract- ing so much interest, and with such good reason, it has been suggested to me that, as the Aspen Mining and Smelting Company, of Aspen, Pitkin county, Colorado, was the first mining company in America to employ electrical power for hoisting, a record of what has been accomplished by this company would be of interest. Early in the year 1888 the question of power for the development of the ore-horizon lying below the level of the tunnel through which the property is worked, became one of importance. The conditions under which it was proposed to use power were as follows (See Fig. 1): The company's mines lie upon the northwestern slope of a mountain, the ascent of which is at an angle of 28' from the horizon. The ore, consisting of argentiferous galena and other silver-bearing mineral, is found at or near the plane of contact of a superincumbent mass of blue limestone, with an underlying bed of dolomite.
