The Howe Memorial Lecture, in memory of Henry Marion Howe, Past President of the Institute, was authorized in April, 1923, as an annual address to be delivered by invitation under the auspices of the Institute by an individual of recognized and outstanding attainment in the science and practice of iron and steel metallurgy or metallography, chosen by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of the Iron and Steel Division. The forty-ninth meeting of the Boston Section was held at the Boston City Club on Monday evening, Dec. 23, 1918. The meeting was preceded by an informal dinner at which 29 members and guests were present; three or four others came in later. A sample of garnet from the scheelite ore body on King Island, Tasmania, Australia, was upgraded and ground to produce an ultrafine portion suitable for micro-electrophoresis. X-ray and chemical analysis identified the garnet as andradite with some admixed grossular. At neutral pH the garnet particles were negatively charged, their zeta potential becoming rapidly more negative with increasing pH. An iso-electric point was found at pH 3.5. The effects on the zeta-potential of various electrolytes, hydrolyzable metal ions, and flotation collectors were also studied.

As several papers on the subject of mining in soft ore-bodies have recently appeared in the Transactions and in the Engineering and Mining Journal, the following brief account of the method introduced by the writer at Low Moor, Va., may be of interest. Wet grinding rod mills have been used for 50 years to grind ores and to make specification sand. The application of wet grinding rod mills is well understood. Until recently, there have been very few installations of dry grinding rod mills. The selection of dry grinding rod mills follows the basic principles established for the selection of wet grinding rod mills. The basic Bond Formulae1 [ ] is used to select mills when using grindability test results as the basis for selection. W is multi- plied by the 1.3 wet to dry grinding factor established from wet and dry ball milling experience, and then by any other applicable inefficiency factors.1 Dry grinding rod mills have also been selected by scaling up bench scale continuous rod mill tests and pilot plant tests.

The Island of Trinidad has much the same geological history as the continent of South America. There are present in this area Cretaceous, Tertiary and Quaternary rocks, which were deposited in a basin covering eastern Venezuela and Trinidad, very much as rocks of the same age were deposited in the Maracaibo Basin in western Venezuela. Along the north coast there are metamorphosed and semimetamorphosed Cretaceous rocks which are found as semicrystalline limestone, schists and quartzites, etc. Both the Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks are petroliferous and are responsible for the production of oil in Trinidad and eastern Venezuela. The geological column in the oil-bearing region of Trinidad is shown below.

A commonly encountered difficulty in subsurface mapping and surveying of joints is the presence of steel conduits and rails, power lines and magnetic rock. Their presence often complicates and occasionally precludes the use of magnetic instruments such as a geologist's compass. An instrument was designed and built to overcome this problem by relating joint orientation geometrically to a known tunnel axis, track, or laser beam. Because of the unknown effect of magnetic bodies of rock, steel and high potential power lines, it becomes difficult or even impossible to make necessary compensations to compass readings. Therefore, relating a joint orientation directly to magnetic or true north seems impractical in underground joint surveying. But since the orientation of mine openings and tunnel alignments is generally surveyed and accurately known, it would appear to be a more practical axis of reference.

The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to MINING AND METALLURGY and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd M.emoria1 Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense.
