Fluoride, generally less than 0.5 ppm, is present in ground water from rocks of Paleozoic age and older, in northern and eastern Alabama. Some of the water-bearing formations in the Coastal Plain area of the State yield water with as much as 6.8 ppm fluoride.

The purpose of this note is to call attention to a source of error in the determination of graphitic carbon, made by the usual method of solution in hydrochloric acid. Although the method is tedious, because of the necessary treatment of the separated carbon with caustic potassa, alcohol and ether, the text-books seem to give it preference; and it is, perhaps, used more generally than the method of solution in dilute nitric acid. Solution in hydrochloric acid usually gives higher graphitic-carbon results than solution in nitric acid, and many, therefore, consider it more trustworthy, the inference being that the lower results obtained by nitric acid are due to the loss of some of the finely-divided graphite by reason of the oxi-

Some uranium minerals are paramagnetic and hence are amenable to concentration by high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS). This paper describes effects of the HGMS parameters-pulp velocity, field strength, matrix loading, and magnetic field gradient-on the product recovery and grade. Unsatisfactory separation of uranium minerals by HGMS is related to ore-specific properties, such as lack of liberation, fine dissemination of uranium minerals, uniform distribution of magnetic minerals throughout the ore matrix, and interference of fine-sized slimes. Experimental techniques to identify and resolve some of these problems are outlined.

At the annual meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Dec. 4 to 7, 1917, a great many matters were discussed and acted upon in which nearly all engineers are equally interested. Of the numerous sessions of the meeting, only a few of the most important can be referred too here. The Committee on Gages held an open meeting for the discussion of this important matter. Representatives from a large number of manufacturing plants and from several departments of the Federal Government were present. The question of gages and standardization of mechanical details is of course of paramount interest just now in connection with the manufacture of ordnance and ammunition. MANY studies of comminution have been made to ascertain the size distribution of the product and to evaluate the work of comminution in the light of the size distributions of the feed and product. Up to now, these studies have been essentially statistical in character, that is, a certain lot of feed was subjected to comminution in some specified way, and the aggregate product was fractionated into sizes, thereby losing all knowledge of individual relationship of feed to product pieces. Radioactive tracers offer a means to do something in this respect which could not be done before, namely, to follow the rupturing of some particular piece in its normal environment of other pieces. That is, it permits going beyond the usual statistical limitations of size distribution studies to what may be termed a personalized or individualized study. The purpose of this paper is to present some preliminary experiments conducted with this tool.

The purpose of this writing is to make available additional data, not previously published, on the zeta potential at various pH values of chrysocolla from the Inspiration mine, Arizona. Much research has been performed on chrysocolla, its physical properties, and its flotation, the results of which have not yielded a commercially acceptable flotation process for its recovery. The present data were collected and are presented to further advance chrysocolla research. Experimental For this investigation a carefully prepared sample of chrysocolla was used. This sample was obtained by crushing specimens from the Inspiration mine and picking out by hand the solid blue particles at -3+8 mesh, by grinding these to 10 mesh and repicking the +28 mesh sizes, by cleaning this product using magnetic separation, and by grinding and screening the material into fractions for final magnetic treatment on a Frantz Isodynamic Separator. Although an aerial photograph is not a map, most of the information that is necessary for compiling a map is recorded in the photograph provided some form of radial-line method is used to determine the true position of images. The slotted-templet method, which is based on the well-established radial-line principle, has made it possible to construct accurate mosaic maps at a cost comparable with that formerly charged for the average mosaic. It makes possible the securing of these results with far less ground control, which is always expensive. It has expanded widely the possible use of aerial photographs for mapping. ALTHOUGH a vertical or oblique aerial photograph is not a map, most of the information that is necessary for compiling a map is recorded in the photograph. Some ground controls or data are needed, the number and accuracy to be governed by the mapping method to be used and the scale and final accuracy desired in the finished map.

Owing to the traffic jam in collection, and transportation of wastes, the air- and water- pollution in incineration plants, and the sanitary trouble in reclaimed land, it seems that the defective existing system of the solid waste treatment in Japan can not follow the change in quality and the increase in quantity of solid wastes. Under these situations, the objective of the municipal solid waste treatment must be to actualize the pollution-free system for environmental protection and the resources recovery system for resource- and energy- saving. From this point of view, AIST of Japan is now engaged in the research and development of the resources recovery system from municipal solid wastes. This paper reports on the outline of the development of resources recovery technology in Japan, including the AIST's project on this matter.

Those familiar with the war in France at first hand know that in these last two years the weight of the suffering has fallen upon the families of the well-to-do classes; those who before the war lived in comparative ease and comfort, with every prospect of educating their children as their parents and grandparents had been. Thousands of the men in these families have been killed, "officiers d'élite," and the small pensions accorded the widows permit them only to house and feed their children HELÈNE JOURNÈS. and give them a common-school education. The pension for a lieutenant's widow is $245 a year; for 'a captain's, $345; for a colonel's $575; and so on. At present, it requires three francs a day to provide food for one person in cities, and conditions are not improving. The American Ouvroir Funds, 681 Fifth Ave., New York City, has tried for nearly two years to have individual Americans give individual children a "bourse," or purse, as it is called, of from $150 to $250 a year, so that they may enter such educational institutions as the Lycées, the Polytechnique, Beaux Arts, St. Cyr, etc. The war relief societies of these military schools furnish photographs and histories of children under their care and on their lists.

Major reserves of phosphorite were found in the Georgina Basin of northern Australia in the period 1966-1968. Geological investigations by various companies and the Bureau of Mineral Resources of Australia show that these phosphorite deposits are associated with siltstones, cherts, siliceous shales, and limestones of the Beetle Creek formation or its equivalents, all of lower Middle Cambrian age. The discoveries resulted from systematic Australia-wide exploration programs by several companies utilizing, in concept, the relation of basin stratigraphy, lithologic associations, tectonics, and phosphate occurrences to paleogeography in respect to its paleolatitude and areas of supposed oceanic upwelling. In terms of field techniques, the first discovery at Duchess, North Queensland, resulted from the recognition of a phosphorite interval at depth in a stratigraphic oil well followed by prospecting of the nearest outcrop of the equivalent aged rock succession. In Northern Territory, the Wonarah-Alexandria deposits, which do not crop out, were discovered by analysis and interpretation of gamma radiation logs followed by drilling.

It is a fact that is coming to be more widely recognized by the general public, as well as by members of the medical fraternity, that the health of persons living in our hill-country depends in no small degree upon the drinking water obtained, just as it has been found that the* use of pure water in the lowlands and swamp-areas of the Southern States results in practical immunity from malarial diseases. Hence the problem, how to obtain supplies of wholesome water for the towns and manufacturing establishments in the hill-country or Piedmont plateau-region of the Southeastern States, becomes one of considerable interest, the importance of which will continue to increase, as the favorable conditions for manufactures and agriculture in this region will make it, in the near future, the most thickly populated portion of the South Atlantic States. Water-supplies from Surface-streams are unquestionably of the first importance; and in the mountain counties, where the region is still largely forest-covered and the streams are swift and continually aerated by rapids and cascades, the water is of superior purity and clearness. This statement is also applicable to the more elevated and sparsely settled portions of the Piedmont plateau; but in the less hilly and more thickly settled portions of this region the streams are more sluggish, and the waters more muddy and less pure, owing to the fact that a much larger proportion of the surface is under cultivation.

The Kotchkar mining-district, known as the Kotchkar System, is situated in the Orenburg government, in Eastern Russia, in the great plateau- or steppe-country immediately adjacent to the eastern slopes of the Ural mountains. Its longer dimension is north and south about 27 miles, while in the widest (northern) portion the distance across is 22 miles. The district lies 40 miles southwest of Miass, a station of the Trans-Siberian railway, and half-way between this village and that of Troitsk. It contains also the not inconsiderable settlements of Kotchkar and Eosobrodskoit., the last a Kossak town. So far as explored, the district is known to contain from 300 to 400 auriferous veins. ? Although the topography is generally of an exceedingly flat character, the country is traversed by several small rivulets running from west to east, and flowing into the Sanarka and Kamenka rivers. Since 1844 placers have been worked in the district, but it was not until 1867 that veins were discovered, and these have been worked only since the impoverishment of the alluvial deposits. The deposit with which this paper especially deals is known as the Ouspensky mine, one of twelve owned by MM. de Zelenkoff & Cie., five of which are situated in the Kotchkar System. An opportunity of visiting this mine was afforded the writers, in eonnection with an excursion of the VII. session of the International Geological Congress; held in Russia during the summer of 1897. The axis of the middle portion of the Ural mountains is made up chiefly of highly compressed igneous and sedimentary schists, considered of Devonian age by the Russian geologists, with large areas of serpentine (peridotite originally) gabbro, etc,, intrusive in the schist series. In addition there are large areas of probably older granitic and gneissic rocks. The nickel deposits referred to in this paper are found in the Devonian schists and their associated igneous rocks. The gabbro-peridotite intrusions probably took place in late Devonian or early Permian time, inasmueh as the Permian and Carboniferous beds lie at gentle angles on the Devonian series on the west slope of the Urals. Perhaps the first attempt to work a nickel deposit in the Urals was made about 1866 in the Revdinsk district, which is situated southwest of Ekaterinburg. 3 was informed by a Russian that a wet method of extracting the nickel was tried but was not a commercial success. This deposit has been described by Muller,l Foullon, and Karpinski.3 Beck4 gives an abstract of these papers. ; Lying to the southeast of the Revdinsk district, the Sissert estate intervening, is the Verkhne-Ufalei district, which is traversed by the railroad from Ekaterinburg to Cheliabinsk, as shown on the map, Fig. 1, there being a station on this railroad at the iron-smelting town of Verkhne-Ufalci. About 7 versts (4.6 miles) north of this town is the Nijni-Karka-dinsk iron mine, which is a limonite deposit. In one of the shafts in this mine a serpentine rock showing a green mineral was encountered. A sample of this mineral collected in 1910 was tested by Mr. Wyatt, chief chemist of the Karabash laboratory of the Kyshtim Mining Works, and determined as nickel ore.
