Experimental statistical designs were used at Zortman Mining Company's, Zortman, Montana, heap-leach operation to establish functional relationships between key operating parameters and gold/silver recoveries. Zinc feed rate, lead feed rate, and vacuum (CFM/gpm) account for 64% and 67% of the attainable gold and silver recoveries, respectively. Surface response graphs of the resulting polynomials were plotted. These graphs were used to optimize Zortman's Merrill-Crowe precipitation process.

Through the remainder of this century, world consumption of fluorine per ton of primary aluminum produced will continue to be substantially reduced. Growth of the primary industry will offset some of the unit consumption, but demand for new fluorine sources will decline sharply. The mining press, as well as certain federal and state bulletins, refer from time to time to the relative hazards that attach to loading bituminous coal by hand when compared with the so-called "mechanical loading" process. Much of the coal coming under the head of hand-loaded coal is won in part by the use of machinery; the coal-cutting machine is in general use, the electric power drill employed to a lesser extent. Therefore it may be said that the principal difference in the process employed, mechanical loading versus hand loading, lies in the fact that some type of loading machine is employed in the mechanical loading process to lift the coal from the face of the room, place or entry, after it is mined, placing it in the pit cars for transport to the tipple. It is a common practice to compute accident records on the basis of tons mined per fatal and per nonfatal accident, disregarding the fact that it is possible to produce by the aid of coal-loading machines the same daily, monthly and annual tonnage with a much smaller force than is required where the coal is all shoveled by hand. Inasmuch as the men who are released by the substitution of machinery for hand labor must find employment elsewhere, suffering some measure of hazard in their new occupation, we are of the opinion that the true relative hazard that attaches to the processes of mechanical loading and hand loading can be determined only by using as the basis of comparison "man shifts worked" or "hours of exposure" experienced per accident. The Union Pacific Coal-Co., beginning with the year 1929, undertook to maintain a true record of man shifts worked per compensable accident, giving equal weight to fatal and nonfatal accidents. Accidents lacking sufficient severity to come under the compensable terms of the Workmen's Compensation Act were not included in the compilation, the Act providing that "no compensation, except the expense of medical attention, shall be allowed for the first seven (7) days of disability, unless the incapacity runs beyond the period of twenty-one (21) days, in which case the compensation shall run from the time of the injury." A rotary chambered blasthole technique has initially indicated a 30% overall improvement in drill and blast department productivity. The method, developed at several open pit copper mines in Arizona, centers around a chambering tool that can be used with existing high-speed rotary drills. The "Chamber Maker," manufactured by the Servco Div. of Smith International, Inc., produces an enlarged section or chamber near the bottom of a large diameter blasthole (Fig. 1). This enlarged cavity permits a greater concentration of explosives at the bottom of the blasthole, resulting in better fragmentation and reduced hard toe problems, and also lowers the number of blastholes required to break a bench area, says Servco's Gerald W. Laswell. Cost savings can therefore be achieved in reduced secondary blasting requirements, increased shovel efficiency, and subsequently, less shovel maintenance. All these factors would serve to lower the overall mine cost per ton figure

This paper reviews transportation trends in large base metal open-pit mines in recent years. Particular attention is paid to the unprecedented increases in the cost of oil and its effect on operating costs. Fuel conservation and measures to improve trucking efficiency are considered. The paper also discusses viable alternatives for reducing or eliminating the use of trucks. Various advantages and disadvantages of using conveyors to transport shot rock from the mine are reviewed. The paper concludes with some observations on current policies and trends primarily aimed at mitigating the high cost of energy.

The Interior Department has been in a state of disarray for many months. At first this was attributed to Interior Secretary Walter Hickel's inability to anticipate how his words would be interpreted by Press-Radio-TV. But then the already disquieted ernployees in the Department became aware that plans were afoot to take bits and pieces of the various antipollution programs from Interior; Health, Education and Welfare: the Atomic Energy Commission and other agencies and lump them together into a new Federal agency. Interior, many predicted, would be a shell of its former robust self. Hardly had this rumor started to add to employee uneasiness before the other big shoe hit the floor. The new rumor had it that the Bureau of Mines was being stripped of most of its research functions and that the Office of Coal Research and allied research groups would be abolished altogether.

THE extent to which geological carbonization has taken place in the process of coal formation is a fundamental factor in all considerations relating to classification, oxidation, deterioration, spontaneous combustion, and especially in all considerations relating to destructive distillation having as an objective the production of marketable coke and by-products. Four generations ago, the Mount Morgan ore deposit sustained the hurly-burly of frantic development common to the finding of a rich discovery. In this case, it was gold discovered in gossan capping on one of the hills of the Dee Range. The bonanza ore, like the flush of youth, has been spent. Today, one recognizes in this operation the orderly manner of the senior citizen, keeping up with the times and husbanding resources. As mining towns go, Mt. Morgan has an enviable situation. The approach is from Rockhampton, Qld, a peaceful, affluent agricultural and cattle center near the sea. To reach the mine, one goes 22 miles, first across farming country, passing orange groves and occasional children on horseback. The ascent into the Dee Range is winding and rapid. In the winter, the hills are green and Bougainvillaea and flowering yellow bracken grow wild on the hillsides. Around a bend, the brown waste terraces of the mine come into view, rising above the surrounding country. The top of the mountain has been sawed off and a deep pit sunk into the core. A little further on, around a few more curves, the town of Mt. Morgan is seen nestling comfortably in the hollows, reaching up the slopes.

THE ease and promptness with which the public as a whole becomes accustomed to and takes advantage of the work of the engineer, using the term in a broad sense, is almost startling. Surprise at, and fear of radical innovations in transportation and private service quickly give way to blasé indifference, followed instantly by all manner of criticism that these things are not better constructed and managed. Does the street car stop a few minutes on a switch?-summon the State Commission. Is the Overland Express fifteen minutes late on a three thousand mile run?-Congress is memorialized to make the great railroad companies attend to their business. Does central not respond instantly when we take down the telephone receiver?-anathema!! Do the electric lights go out for a minute or so?-the darkness is illuminated by caustic sarcasm and other kinds of spoken English consigning all engineering and engineers to perdition; everyone apparently forgetting how steep the hills were before the days of street cars, how far away San Francisco was before the days of the locomotive, the telegraph and telephone, and how difficult it must have been to study by the light of a tallow candle.

During the history of man, the term concentration has had many meanings. Early in history, it may have been construed to mean sorting and smelting. Not many years ago, its definition included only the physical beneficiation processes. Today, and in this article, the term concentration is taking on the meaning of beneficiation and chemical processing, or either separately. An alternate definition could be: concentration is the process of recovering and upgrading an element or nonmetallic mineral so that the product can be used or refined for the needs of man. For the purpose of this article, concentration will have the same connotation as it does in the mineral industry, which has come to include processing methods such as leaching and chlorinization under this heading. Usually, smelting techniques and electrorefining are excluded and classified under the heading of refining. Using the broad definition of concentration, the areas of mining processing include not only the physical beneficiation processes and flotation but also hydrometallurgy and vapor-metallurgy. These methods include sorting, sizing, crushing and grinding, gravity concentrating, magnetic processing and flotation as well as hydrometallurgy and vapor- metallurgical processing.

AMONG the petroleum-producing countries of the world, Roumania occupies the fifth place; in Europe, it occupies second place, coming after Russia. The extraction and the use of petroleum in Roumania, may be trace( as far back as 1856, but the production on an industrial scale started in 1896, when the "Steaua Romana," was formed. From that time until the beginning of the war, the petroleum industry had a rapid growth the number of the producing companies increased to 37, and production FIG. 1.-ROUMANIAN OIL AND GAS FIELDS. increased from 81,571 tons, in 1896, to 1,898,545 tons, in 1912, when the greatest production was reached. In 1916, when the Germans invaded Roumania, the oilfields, at the order of the Allies and under British supervision, were destroyed, to pre vent their exploitation by the Central Powers; the wells were blown in the refineries and the storage tanks burnt, and pipelines put out of order This voluntary destruction, which weakened the resistance of the Central Powers, set back the petroleum industry at least one decade. Reconstruction after the war was slow, because of bad transportation conditions the scarcity of drilling and refining material, the insufficiency of. electric power, and the continuous depreciation of the Roumanian money, which made difficult the buying of the necessary materials for reconstruction.

THE work performed by, the Royal Commission on Mining Subsidence is likely to prove of permanent value, less perhaps for the conclusions it has reached and for the recommendations it has based upon these than for the admirable exposition which it affords of the law concerning mining subsidence and of the legal status of the person who has suffered damage by reason of such subsidence, as also of him whose working has caused the damage. The Commission was appointed by Royal Warrant in the middle of 1925 and delivered its final report in the middle of 1927. The terms of reference to the Commission were as follows: "To consider the operation of the law relating to the support of the surface of the land, and of buildings or works on or under the surface, by underlying or adjacent minerals; to enquire into the extent and gravity of the damage caused by subsidence owing to the extraction of minerals and the incidence of the resulting liability; and to report what steps should be taken, by legislation or otherwise, to remedy, equitably to all persons concerned, any defects or hardships that may be found to arise in existing conditions."

The three principal mines from which the celebrated Salisbury iron ores are obtained are called respectively the "Old Hill," "Davis," and "Chatfield" ore beds, and are situated in the town of Salisbury, Litchfield County, Conn., on the eastern slope of the Tocconuc range of hills.* The Old Hill Ore Bed is a tract of land of 100 acres, originally granted by the General Court in October, 1731, to be laid out by Daniel Bissell of Windsor. It mas Boon after surveyed and located by Ezekiel Ashley and John Pell. The descendants of Ashley are still proprietors in the mine. The supply of ore has been very abundant, and for many years was easily obtained, but latterly the cost of raising has been greatly increased. Up to about 1840 the average yield was estimated to be about 4500 tons per annum. The production has gradually increased until the average yield at present is estimated at 15,000 tons annually. The largest production in any one ymr was about 20,000 tons. The proprietors of this mine were incorporated many years ago under the style of " The Salisbury Ore Bed Proprietors." The Davis Ore Bed, named after an early owner, was originally called Hendricks Ore Bed, and was owned before the organization of the town of Salisbury by Thomas Lamb, one of the first settlers

THE- Missouri-Kansas Zinc Corpn., operating in the Waco district, 15 miles northwest of Joplin, Mo., owns large tailing piles made during milling operations of the years 1918-28 by the Butte-Kansas, Acme, and Barnsdall mining companies, whose holdings have been purchased and consolidated under, the ownership of the Missouri-Kansas Zinc Corpn. These tailings had been considered too low in value to be worth retreating by the ordinary methods. C. Erb Wuensch, consulting engineer of the Missouri-Kansas Zinc Corpn., noted the difference in the type of tailing from upper-level and lower-level ore. The latter contained hard lime chats. He also found that mill losses had been due to particles of blende on the corners or sides of the chats and to the existence of soft, porous, cellular, lime chats containing varying amounts of blende. He conceived the idea that a quick grind in rolls or ball mills might change the type of the material so that jigging could make a clean tailing for discard and a partly concentrated product sufficient in blende content to justify the expense of fine grinding in ball mills to free the mineral entirely. A laboratory was equipped with the necessary machines and the writers were assigned the problem of developing a method of retreating the tailings.
