The area discussed herein, commonly known as the North Texas district, embraces the following 10 counties: Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Knox, Montague, Wichita and Wilbarger. It is underlain by two major structural features. The northernmost portion of the district, including Coolie, Montague, northern Clay, Wichita, Wilbarger, Foard and Hardeman Counties, is underlain by the system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift, which is parallel to and closely related to the Wichita-Amarillo uplift of Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle. While the presence of a great majority of the numerous oil fields of the area is traceable to this feature, the production in Archer, southwestern Clay and southeastern Baylor Counties is due to the influence of what is known as the Cisco arch (so called because of its influence on Cisco deposition), the axis of which extends in a northwest-southeast direction across southwestern Wichita County into Archer County. Developments during 1938 Important discoveries in the district were considerably more numerous and of more economic importance than for several years. In addition to a number of small, relatively unimportant discoveries and to the usual local extensions to the various producing fields in the several counties, at least eight fields, most of them apparently of considerable areal extent and importance, were found. The Helmerich and Payne, Incorporated and Blackwell Oil and Gas Company No. 1 Wilson. 4 miles southeast of the town of Holliday, in north central Archer County, encountered a pay of Strawn age at a depth of 3841 to 3858 ft., and was completed for an initial production of 1952 bbl. T'his well opened a new deep pool in the K. M. A. producing zone 8 miles southeast of the K. M. A. production. Subsequently an additional deeper horizon, also of lowcr Strawn age, was discovered by wells that failed to yield commerecial oil from the horizon of the discovery well.

LATEST estimates of Russian steel production for 1951 give rise to the belief that on at least one vital front, the Western bloc of nations has maintained a definite advantage. On the surface, we are outproducing the Eastern bloc by more than twice. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe estimates Russian output at 31.30 million tons, a 15 pct increase over the previous year. Production for the entire Iron Curtain is figured at 40.93 million tons. Western Europe alone produced 17 pct. more steel during the same period. The figures are misleading in one sense. We have no precise idea of how much steel is being used for arms. The Western nations are still expending much of their production for consumer goods, and you cant throw washing machines in a shooting war. It is significant to note that Russian production is well, beyond estimates made by world authorities prior to the current international situation. INTERIOR Secretary Oscar L. Chapman warns that the United States must make use of the resources of other nations or face mineral impoverishment once the time of struggle is over. He pointed out that the present struggle between two ideologies can leave the United States in such a state as to preclude anything but political' victory-with an accomp anying economic loss that will be irreparable. Chapman scored the attitude whereby conservation programs are looked upon as a luxury, pointing out that the nation faces an ever increasing need for action on that front. He also announced that the Bureau of Mines doubled its facilities for producing pure zirconium during 1950-51 at the request of the Atomic Energy Commission. Zirconium may be an important structural metal for atomic power devices. The Interior Secretary also said that the AEC has provided the Bureau with funds for the study of radioactive minerals and to help test and evaluate about 9000 ore samples believed to contain uranium.

This account of a contrivance which has been found serviceable in practice may be of interest to engineers, and especially to those engaged in hydraulic mining. In that process, one feature which seems at first sight to possess little significance, is highly important in its effects—namely, the regular supply of water to the " giants." The chief condition of this regularity is an even flow in the pipe-line from the penstock to the nozzle.' This, of course, requires that the penstock be kept full. Any considerable surplus of water, overflowing at the penstock, is a simple waste, unless it be otherwise utilized in the sluices. At all events, it does not affect the delivery of the nozzles. But a deficiency at the penstock may admit air into the pipe; and this may produce hydraulic recoil, injuring the line by incessant vibrations, giving rise to leaks, and even to blow-outs, and (when a partial vacuum exists at the time of the fracture) the collapse of the pipe. An accident of this sort in our main pipe-line, occasioned partly by a settling of the ground and partly by the presence of air in the pipe, led to the employment of the device here described. The line referred to is made of 30-in. pipe, successively reduced to 18 and 15 in. in diameter, for the supply of two giants. By reason of the causes above mentioned, the 30-in. pipe burst more than 1,400 ft. from the penstock, and, despite the air-valve, the 30-in. pipe was collapsed to such a degree that one length of it, next to the penstock, was squeezed together and positively swallowed by the main pipe, through which it traveled for 750 ft., piercing through a short elbow on the way. This remarkable result was undoubtedly the effect of the vacuum suddenly produced when the pipe burst.

THE measurement and control of temperatures have assumed positions of great importance in many industries. The manufacturers of byproduct coke and carbureted water gas find that proper temperature control helps to produce a better product and economizes in the use of raw materials. In the manufacture of glass, enameled ware, brass, and high-temperature refractories, temperature control is now regarded as being coordinate in importance with the control of materials used. To control such processes as malleablizing cast iron, and hardening, tempering, and annealing of steel in a manner to meet exacting market requirements has, within recent years, involved the installation of large and expensive pyrometer equipments. In many of these installations, it was necessary not merely to measure but also to record the temperatures over a period of time and thus obtain a record of the entire heat treatment and an effective check on the workmen in charge. In view of the importance of temperature measurement and control in such a wide variety of industries and the necessity for proper supervision of the installation and operation of the outfits, the following questions may be pertinent: What instruction is offered by the engineering colleges and what departments in the colleges are responsible therefor? The latest available catalogs of ten prominent engineering colleges east of the Mississippi River showed courses in high-temperature measurements given by the departments of physics. These courses, in general, were described as comprising classroom and laboratory instruction in the theory of high-temperature measurements, together with exercises in the calibration of the various devices used. In some cases it was stated that consideration would be given, in the courses, to the practical applications in the industries. In only one. college was the course required of all engineering students; in most colleges it was optional; in a few colleges, it was required only of certain groups. The original basis for the search for oil in Great Britain was described last year.t During 1937 the exploratory drilling by the D'Arcy Exploration Company, Ltd. has been continued. Three wells have been completed in the south of England and a fourth is nearing completion. In addition, test wells are now being drilled in Scotland and East Yorkshire. Southern England The test well on the Portsdown structure, which at the end of 1936 was drilling in the Lower Lias at 5792 ft., entered the Triassic at 6540 ft. and was completed in that formation at a depth of 6556 ft., without encountering further indications of petroleum. The Henfield well encountered the Lias at a depth of approximately 4090 ft., and after drilling 800 ft. of an argillaceous development of that formation entered a series of marls, breccias and conglomeratic limestones of the Carboniferous. Drilling was suspended at a depth of 5105 ft., in the latter formation. The consistently impermeable nature of the strata encountered in the Portsdown and Henfield test wells focused attention on the desirability of obtaining shore-line conditions of the Jurassic. With this end in view the Kingsclere anticline, a few miles south of Newbury in Berkshire, was selected for a next test. The Kingsclere well has now reached a depth of 5032 ft. in the Lower Lias and has encountered a full development of the Jurassic. With the exception of the Portland sand, which has a slightly greater porosity, and the Corallian, in which relatively great thicknesses of impervious limestone were met, conditions of sedimentation have been found to be comparable with those of the earlier wells. Small traces of petroleum have been found in cuttings and cores, but formation tests carried out at frequent intervals have yielded no flow of oil. In order to test the Corallian, from which series an outcropping oil sand had been found, a test well was drilled in a near-by anticline at Poxwell in Dorset. A year ago, Marshall and Bird presented a paper in which a new method of measuring the agglutinating power of coal was described.' The procedure used was to determine the strength of a button containing 10 parts sand and one part coal, formed by carbonizing the mixture in a crucible in an electric furnace. The result of the determination was reported as the total weight in grams required to bring about complete destruction of the button. Correlations were shown between the agglutinating value and some of the characteristics of the different coals that were investigated. This agglutinating test has been in use fairly continuously during the past five years for coals of widely differing coking qualities, and it has shown reasonably concordant results accurate enough for commercial use, although there are many features of the test which should have further scientific study. During the past year a study has been made of some coals of low coking strengths, and incidental to the main investigation some data which appear to be of interest and value were obtained on the loss in agglutinating power caused by exposure to the air. Three coals were investigated, all of which were of the Tertiary age; two were from one field in Asia, and one from a field in the United States. The three were similar, as shown by the proximate and ultimate analyses in Table 1 (moisture-free basis). Coals SA and RA generally contain about 5 per cent. moisture and coal P about 3.5 per cent. moisture on the as-received basis. The large difference in the ash contents of the coals, amounting to practically 10 per cent. between SA and RA, and P, makes difficult a direct comparison of their qualities. In the second section of Table 1 the figures have been put upon an ash-free basis., This table shows that these coals are closely alike. AT THE beginning of September, the French eased their pressure against Germany and allowed the latter to, be granted an arrangement for its reparation payments in kind according to the Lubersac-Stinnes agreement. The whole arrangement as to the German reparations is, however, but temporary. The Greeks suffered a disastrous defeat at the hands of the Turks in Anatolia, which rapidly resulted in the expulsion of the Greeks from Asia Minor, the Turks occupying Smyrna about Sept. 10. A few days after entering Smyrna the Turks sacked the city and finally set it afire, creating one of the most terrible destructions in history. At the same time their advance on Constantinople, together with their demands on the Allies, brought them directly in, con-flict with the latter and Great. Britain prepared for a new war, with doubt as to the support of France, whose political interests in the Near East are as different as their economic interests with respect to ;Germany. The Turkish situation became thus a threat against the peace of Europe. A revolution in Greece, followed by the abdication of King Constantine and the return of Venizelos to a function in the Government was one of the conse-quences of the defeat in Asia Minor. Civil war continued in Ireland, with more or less -bloodshed. Economically there has been no change for the better in Europe. In Great Britain there, are no signs of an -important trade revival. In Germany and Austria things are worse. French, Italian and Spanish affairs continue in a bad way. In the United States business is represented as "booming," but many people are inquiring where is the boom? About the middle of September Congress passed the tariff and the soldier bonus bills. The President signed the former and vetoed the latter, with a strong message that won praise among people who understand condi-tions. Congress tried to pass the bill over the veto, but failed. The President signed the tariff bill, which became effective Sept. 21. A severe handicap was thus imposed on American economics.

The approach proposed in this paper is, as stated by the authors, an update of methods well discussed in the literature. The authors are to be congratulated for their excellent effort in quantifying a difficult problem with realistic cost data. Economic analysis of the components of a mine ventilation system is complicated by both the dynamic nature of the system and the uncertainty as to the time when system changes occur. We wish to address three specific areas of this paper which require further consideration: shaft designed air capacity, shaft location, and economic criteria used within the analysis. With regard to ventilation shaft size optimization, the system complexities are illustrated in the quantity flow through the shaft. Obviously, the capacity chosen by the designer is a static parameter while the utilized capacity is usually a dynamic variable over the life of the shaft. The designed capacity may be used for a short or a long period, and this may occur during the beginning, middle, or near the end of the shaft life, leading to different operating costs at different times. Operating costs, as shown by the authors' Eq. 8 are more dependent on air quantity than any other single factor (quantity cubed as compared with other factors to the single power); hence, extreme accuracy in the assessment of some of the other factors discussed by the authors may be secondary to the quantity estimation. Incorporation of a variable usage factor for air quantity over the life of the shaft in this optimization problem deserves some consideration. Although the authors have chosen to examine optimum ventilation shaft sizing, it must be remembered that optimization of the whole system-is the primary objective of any optimization process; unit optimization of such items as shafts may not complement the overall process. We have discussed this subject in some detail in another paper in this Transactions volume (Luxbacher and Ramani, 1979). While the recommended process by Wang, et al. can be used in shaft sizing, the shaft operating conditions (pressure head and air quantity) are intertwined with the shaft location within the mine infrastructure:

THOUGH production began in Canada only a short time after the discovery of oil in the United States, it has never attained large proportions, and if we were to judge entirely by the past the reserves of Canada would be put at a very low figure. There are only two areas from which oil is marketed at the present time; one, the old district around Petrolia in southern Ontario, and the other is the small Sheep Creek field near Calgary in Alberta. The former district has produced between 200,000 and 800,000 bbl. annually for the past 40 years, recent figures being near the minimum amount. Sheep Creek has produced about 12,000 bbl. annually for the past five years. The known reserves in proved territory in each of these fields are exceedingly small, when considered in terms of world reserves. The chief hope of Canada for reserves of considerable magnitude lies in the western provinces. Sedimentary rocks similar to those in the productive fields of the United States occupy thousands of square miles in the western provinces, so that it seems likely that somewhere within this great area the peculiar conditions necessary for the presence of oil pools will be found. Prospecting is being carried on energetically by several large companies, as well as by many independents. The Dominion Government, which controls most of the public lands, is pursuing a .fairly liberal policy toward the prospector, which should stimulate wildcatting; although the province of British Columbia, which controls public lands within that province, is at present unwilling to give adequate encouragement to make wildcatting attractive. As there is really no assurance that any productive pools will be found in western Canada, the estimates of reserves are subject to a wide possibility of error. In making estimates, the various areas within which geologic conditions are more or less uniform are discussed separately; the estimates given for each area are not given with the idea that there is a reasonable probability of their eventually proving to be correct. It is hoped that an average of these estimates, taken together with those made for other undeveloped countries, will give a correct total of reserves

At a meeting of the New York Section, held at the Machinery Club on Jan. 19, 1916, the topic, for the evening was The Problems of the Naval Consulting Board, on which board are four prominent members of the Institute. The speakers of the evening were W. L. Saunders, president of the Institute, Dr. L. H. Baekeland, and Commander A. B. Fry, chief of staff of the New York Naval Militia. After Chairman Browne had laid before the meeting certain business matters, he introduced President Saunders, who presided during the speech making and delivered the first speech. The letter from President Wilson to Mr. Saunders and the presidents of the other national engineering societies, inviting their cooperation in a scheme for mobilizing, as it were, the industrial capacity of this country, had just been made public (see a previous page of this Bulletin) and President Saunders described in considerable detail the origin, purposes, and scope, of the work to be undertaken in this direction. Each of the five national scientific societies is to select a representative from its resident members in every State of the Union, that is, the mining engineers will have 48 representatives, likewise the electrical engineers, the chemists, the civil engineers, and the mechanical engineers. Thus, there will be a representative body or board of five members in every State, one from each of the five societies or institutes. Each committee will investigate the manufacturing and producing possibilities in its own state, and will gather information as to the capacity of every industry which may be capable of supplying things that are needed for the sinews of war. Industrial preparedness means something more than mere capacity to make shells. The field covers food, clothing, hospital equipment, motors, animals, telephones, telegraph and railway accommodations, and a myriad of small details.

Although an aerial photograph is not a map, most of the information that is necessary for compiling a map is recorded in the photograph provided some form of radial-line method is used to determine the true position of images. The slotted-templet method, which is based on the well-established radial-line principle, has made it possible to construct accurate mosaic maps at a cost comparable with that formerly charged for the average mosaic. It makes possible the securing of these results with far less ground control, which is always expensive. It has expanded widely the possible use of aerial photographs for mapping. Although a vertical or oblique aerial photograph is not a map, most of the information that is necessary for compiling a map is recorded in the photograph. Some ground controls or data are needed, the number and accuracy to be governed by the mapping method to be used and the scale and final accuracy desired in the finished map. Radial-line Control It is essential that the principle of radial-line control in the use of vertical aerial photographs be understood and accepted before any confidence in the slotted-templet method can be gained. A simple sketch and some enlargements showing the Empire Stale Building will serve to illustrate the cause of displacement of an image that is above the datum plane as recorded in the photograph. The top of the tower of the Empire State Building is directly above the base, and when the image of the top is shown almost two blocks away from the center of the base, it is evident that the image of the top of the tower is not the true location, and in this particular case we know where the true location is; namely, over the center of the base of the tower. If the top of the tower were the top of a hill 1250 ft. high, we would have no way of knowing by inspection the true position of the top of the hill, so it is very important to have a method whereby the true location of any such point can be determined, and thereby make it possible to convert the detail of an aerial photograph into accurate information for mapmaking.

AT high temperatures a deformed polycrystalline metal shows grain-boundary displacement in preference to slip lines.' This has led to the conclusion that overall strain at high temperatures is produced chiefly by grain-boundary displacement. Detailed microscopic examinations of individual grain boundaries have shown many interesting ways by which their displacement occurs; sometimes no grain deformation was observed except possibly in the immediate neighborhood of the boundary. However, X-ray examinations show that at high temperatures subgrain formation occurs;Y he process, generally called polygonization, results from lattice bending and the subsequent climb of dislocations to form low-angle boundaries. Quantitative measures of the grain-boundary displacements show that they make a minor geometrical contribution to the overall strain; the major contribution is made by grain deformation."'" A relationship between grain-boundary displacement and grain deformation was suggested by McLean, who showed how the degree of polygonization would determine the amount of grain boundary displacement: and by Dorn, who showed that for a given creep stress, the amount of grain-boundary shear was related to the overall strain and was independent of temperature.' Although the grain-boundary displacement may make a small geometrical contribution to overall strain, it may still be the rate-controlling factor in high-temperature creep. If in general grain-boundary displacement and grain deformation are dependent quantities, then the designer of a creep-resistant metal would like to know whether it is more desirable to strengthen the matrix of the grain or to increase the strength of its boundary. The widespread interest in the relationship between temperature and grain-boundary displacement makes it desirable to test the generality of Dorn's result6 that the ratio of grain-boundary displacement to overall strain is independent of the temperature for a given creep stress. In this investigation p-brass was used because it produces sharp grain-boundary displacements above 400°C. Since B-brass undergoes an order-disorder transformation which abruptly strengthens the grain, it is an excellent metal for determining whether grain-boundary displacement or grain deformation is the rate-controlling factor in creep. The fundamentals of human nature don't change much from generation to generation, or even from century to century. Except for the spur of necessity and the lure of reward and ad venture, few of us would bestir ourselves unduly. The general welfare has little appeal to the average individual. Its promotion comes about mainly as a by-product to individual efforts directed at more personal benefits and satisfactions. In discussing incentives for the mining industry, we really are talking about incentives for people who devote their energies and resources to mining. The vigorous and productive mining industry as we have known it was the product of the varied incentives we have known in the past: the lure of great financial reward if you struck it rich; the thrill of romance and adventure in the search for mineral wealth, usually along the frontiers 'of civilization; the satisfaction of developing a great, productive enterprise by the application of skill, courage, and determination in the face of obstacles. Back of the prospector and engineer were other venturesome persons willing to take a flyer with their savings in a grubstake, or in stock in a promising mining venture, hoping for large returns, but reconciled to take a loss and try again with the next opportunity. It is free enterprise-a chance for high profits, but a chance also of total loss-that created the great mining industry of this country and of the world. Free enterprise has given us, in the United States, the greatest productive system in the world, the highest standard of living, the most abundant life. The lure of gold-whether from the ground or merely incidental to the discovery and development of our mineral resources-pushed our frontiers westward across the country and northward into Canada and Alaska far in advance of the staid course of agriculture and commerce. No one guaranteed success to our forebears as they risked life and fortune in developing a new country. Self-reliance was the backbone of our economic and spiritual Progress and achievements. Our neighbors had little time to spare from their own problems. And though there was a willingness among the pioneers to help one another, they didn't lean too much on one another.

More than a decade ago some theoretically derived relationships were proposed that permitted the prediction of the relative ability of reservoir fluids (oil, gas, water) to flow simultaneously within the porous structure of rocks. While many successful predictions of fluid-flow ratios from wells have been made from electric logs, the theoretical deductions have not been subjected to laboratory verifications. For the relative permeability to liquid and gas, simultaneous flow of water and air was used, employing the familiar external-gas-drive technique. While in the process or water desaturation, the resistivities of the test cores (Woodbine sand) were measured. Their permeabilities varied from 10 to 280 md. The laboratory results indicated the need for changing the values of exponents in the theoretically derived formulas, whereas the form of the functions of resistivities and saturations remained as derived by theory. For the relative permeability to oil and water, the three-core dynamic technique was used on six cores. In this case it was found that the formulas were valid with but slight modification as derived by theory, to a sufficient degree of accuracy for engineering use and for well productivity prediction from electric logs. INTRODUCTION Conventional quantitative well log interpretation generally stops after reasonable values for formation porosities and water saturations have been established. Yet such in formation is insufficient to predict either the outcome or the desirability of well tests and completion, let alone the economic aspect of producing oil- and gas-bearing sections which might have been established by conventional log analysis. To give an engineering answer to such questions, it is necessary to predict the expected fluid flow ratios, the productivity index and the ultimate recovery from potentially productive wells. This problem requires in part for its solution a determination of the relative permeability characteristics of the potentially producing formations, both to oil (or water) and gas, and to oil and water.

The top of the tower of the Empire State Building is directly above the base, and when the image of the top is shown almost two blocks away from the center of the base, it is evident that the image of the top of the tower is not the true location, and in this particular case we know where the true location is; namely, over the center of the base of the tower. If the top of the tower were the top of a hill 1250 ft. high, we would have no way of knowing by inspection the true position of the top of the hill, so it is very important to have a method whereby the true location of any such point can be determined, and thereby make it possible to convert the detail of an aerial photograph into accurate information for mapmaking.

In many iron, coal and copper mines where large tonnages are known before starting operation and proper provisions can be made, the problems of electric traction by trolley locomotives are not very different from those of surface plants. In such installations the gauge of the track, the radius of curves, and the clearances, both vertical and horizontal, can be made to suit the conditions of the traffic. It is more difficult to install electric traction in mines which were started with hand tramming and where no consideration was given to the possibility of mechanical traction being used. The writer having had some experience in the installation of electric traction in copper mines, the following remarks apply more particularly to these mines. With the gauge of track usually 18 or 20 in., the weight limit of locomotives obtainable from manufacturers in this country varies from 3 to 6 tons. The full-load speed varies from 49 to 6 miles per hour. These locomotives, being made to run on very small radius curves, have a short wheel base and a long overhang from axle to coupling, which necessitates a coupling' with a good deal of lateral motion to avoid derailing the cars on sharp curves, especially if couplings are of the standard railroad automatic type. Although 3-ton locomotives will run on 12- or 16-lb. rails, it has been found more satisfactory to use 25-lb. rails, as the track keeps in much better shape, it is easier to maintain the bonding in good order, and fewer derailments from dirt on the track occur with the larger rails. Where 6-ton locomotives are used the 25-lb. rails are satisfactory, but 40-lb. rails have proved cheaper where the traffic is heavy and the ground is soft, as the track maintenance is considerably lower with the heavy rails. The locomotives will run on 15-ft. radius curves, but on through runs it is advisable not to go below 40-ft. radius. The voltage used should not exceed 250 to 275 volts, and the trolley wire should be protected, to prevent accidental contacts, in front of chutes and at all points where it is low. CORNWALL, a Mecca for metal miners the world over, is easily reached from the southern coast of England. Passengers who land at Plymouth or Southampton can connect with a fast train from London called the "Riviera express," which traverses the beautiful counties bordering the English Channel. In Cornwall the traveler soon notices the pits and stock-piles of white china clay, and the metal mines, both placer and hard rock. The deposits are associated with granite batholiths, of which there are four principal ones, each a few miles in diameter. Tin mines are especially worked in the granite near its borders and also in the immediately surrounding Paleozoic slates. Copper and lead are no longer of importance here but tin is being produced steadily from several mines, with arsenic and tungsten as by-products. At the close of the war the man-power available. for these mines had been reduced to one-third of normal, and only now is it again reaching full strength. As mining in Cornwall antedates the Christian era, even a Nevada prospector would have to admit that "she's a permanent camp." SUB-TROPICAL CORNWALL Redruth and Camborne are industrial centers of the tin mining industry, but more tourist hotels are found in neighboring resorts such as St. Ives, a quaint fish-ing town on the Atlantic-side of the peninsula of Corn-wall, where the numerous cats descended from those mentioned in the ancient riddle-rhyme about St. Ives now occupy every doorstep and wall. Another charm-ing resort. Penzance on the shore of the English Channel, is known by name to the public through the opera "The Pirates of Penzance," but is of especial in-terest to students of nature for its palm trees and other subtropical plants, which thrive owing to the nearness of the gulf stream, although the latitude is that of northern Newfoundland, Winnipeg, and the northern end of Vancouver Island. Among the industrial plants at Camborne are those of Holman Brothers, Ltd., where drills and other forms of mining equipment are manufactured. At the Corn-wall School of Mines, which specializes on the district, the staff has assembled excellent collections of local ores, which repay study by a visitor.

The measure of value of an oil property is approximated by the length of time it takes to "pay out;" viz., the time required for it to return the original investment. This time varies in different fields. In the Appalachian and Mid-Continent fields, a good investment pays out in about four years; in California, it requires a slightly longer time; and in the Gulf field about two years. The two principal methods for establishing these values are based on acreage, as in California, and on production, as in the Appalachian field. The method of establishing values based on production1 was worked out in the Appalachian fields and approximates the value remarkably well in some fields; but it is a rule of thumb and should be used intelligently. Briefly, the method is as follows: An arbitrary number of dollars (called the barrel-day price) multiplied by the number of barrels of settled daily production of the property gives the value. In its crudest application, the barrel-day price is determined by the "$10 to $0.01" rule, which means that the barrel-day price is one thousand times the prevailing price of oil. For instance, with oil at $3.50 per bbl. the barrel-day price would be $3500 per bbl. This rule, however, is not strictly applied, for the barrel price is varied according to whether or not the wells "hold up." But when a barrel price for a district has been fixed it is quite general to raise or lower the price with the fluctuation in the price of oil; here the"$10 to $0.0l"ruleisused extensively. However, the prospective purchaser takes into account tangible equipment upon the property, the extent to which the drilling program has been carried out, whether or not the wells are "shot" or natural, depth of wells, spacing of wells, paraffin trouble, etc. The basis of this method is settled production. As soon as production is considered settled, a flat barrel-day price is generally applied to all properties, no matter what their age. If it were possible to show that this flat rate was erroneous and that the value of the property depended on the point on the decline curve at which the wells happened to be (in other words, their age), and also on the operating costs, the future price

Introduction The use of frequency of vibration measurements to determine tension has long been accepted by industries that use electrical or stranded cables of wire ropes in their operations. In contemplating how to determine the tension in chords of a roof truss, it seems almost inevitable that a similar approach should be investigated even though there are some important dissimilarities in physical behavior between a chord of a rod-type Birmingham truss and a stretched wire rope. While the dominant feature of both types of behavior is the existence of tension, the bending resistance of the vibrating truss chord cannot be ignored. And it is common to have attached to the chord, pieces of hardware (turnbuckles, extension sleeves, wedge boxes) that represent concentrations of mass not usually found in a vibrating wire rope. Analytical solutions to the problem of vibrating wires or beams can be found in the literature on vibrations (Timoshensko, 1955; Den Hartog, 1956). But in every case, at least one of the ingredients of the vibrating truss chord is missing. The presence of axial tension, or bending resistance, of concentrated masses and of end conditions peculiar to truss chords is a combination that appears not to have been dealt with before, although the techniques for dealing with it are commonly known. The purpose of this note is to report the results of a project to measure and calibrate such frequencies. The work was conducted by the University of Pittsburgh under the sponsorship of the US Bureau of Mines. Field observations Tests were conducted on 24 different truss installations. The first 18 trusses were installed in shale roofs above Kentucky No. 9 seam and Illinois No. 6 seam. The remaining six were placed against the competent sandstone over the Pocahontas No. 3 seam in West Virginia. Chord tension was determined by two electrical resistance strain gages, in series, applied diametrically opposite to one another on the rod before tensioning. Due to the combined effects of inexact gage placement, rod bending and residual torsion in the chord due to tightening, errors in tension as high as 1780 N (400 lb) were reasonably possible. Due to faulty soldering or damage, three of the first 18 trusses and one of the final six were rendered completely unreliable. In addition to strain, the first natural frequency of vibration was observed to the nearest 0.1 Hz. Dimensions recorded included the span between contact points at the bearing blocks (Fig. 1) and the locations and amount of excess rod and rod gap at the wedge box and turnbuckle, respectively.
