The San Francisco Chemical Co. has been actively interested in phosphate mining since 1908. It was, in fact, the first company to make claims on properties in the western phosphate belt. From the period of 1908 to 1947, the company's phosphate operations were centered at their Waterloo property, five miles east of Montpelier, Idaho. A small tonnage of phosphate rock was shipped annually from their underground mines in that area. In 1945, the company started the first western open-pit phosphate mine on the slopes of Waterloo Hill. In 1947, they obtained an option and lease on the Beckwith Hills' deposits in southwestern Wyoming, some 25 miles south of Cokeville. While the operations at Montpelier and the Beckwith Hills are both open pit, there are many differences which suggest separate treatment in this paper. Structurally, the Waterloo Hill is the west slope of an anticline. The beddings dip from 20" to 35" to the west. Erosion has caused the footwall exposures (Well's formation) to appear in the upper areas as a series of apices, giving the outcrops a festooned arrangement. OF no less importance nor less terrifying to consider than the marvelous effects of guns are those produced with fire by powder in underground mines. These are truly not only similar to fearful natural earthquakes, but it can perhaps be said that these made by art surpass the wrath of the earth with greater effect. For if the latter shakes it happens that it causes the things on the surface to shake and sometimes to fall into ruins, but the former not only shakes but always functions and destroys-surely a marvelous effect which is almost incomprehensible, and if experience did not demonstrate it, it could scarcely be believed. Who would say that the mountains, things of such great hardness, would yield to men, easily opening their bowels? Likewise, one who had not seen it would say that it was impossible for men to have a way of administering at will fearful and destructive thunderbolts which are of such a kind that, although men make them, they cannot protect themselves against them; indeed they cannot call themselves safe from the evilness of gunpowder even in mountains composed of very hard stones or in budded structures. For, as is seen, there is no seemingly impregnable fortress that does not yield when guns are brought near it. From the time of its beginning in the mid-19th century, the American barite industry has had its major development in the eastern and central states. Geologic and economic factors serve to maintain Arkansas, Missouri, and the Southern Appalachian states in the lead position. In earlier days, the major markets for barite were in paint, chemical, and glass manufacturing, and the favored deposits were those which were close to eastern industrial areas; furthermore, the eastern deposits were cheaply mined and required little or no beneficiation. In the last few decades, the use of barite as a weighting medium for muds in rotary oil well drilling has caused a great expansion in the industry, but the marketing picture is still centered outside of the western states-now on the Gulf Coast area where high pressures are common in oil wells. Low cost imported barite, readily available on the East Coast and Gulf Coast, has always been a major marketing factor in the industry. The major barite producing state is Arkansas, with the industry centering about the Magnet Cove area. Missouri ranks second, with production mainly from residual deposits. Several Southestern states are actively producing from residual deposits.

Experiments indicate that simple addition of water to mixtures of untreated trona and otherwise insoluble leonardite yields a rich, black, slightly alkaline solution of concentrated humic substances.
