ThE eutectoid decomposition of 6 phase in the Cu-Sn system (32.53 wt pct Sn) has been studied by several investigators.1-6 On the basis of X-ray work, Iball and 0wen1 reported complete decomposition of 6 in powder specimens after 7 days at 300°C. Wang and Hansen followed the micro-structural changes during heat treatment of lump specimens and estimated 5 pct decomposition after 63 days at 300°C. Wang and Hansen suggested that the discrepancy between the decomposition rates of powder and lump specimens might be due to the excess surface free energy of powders. The present work involved 6 decomposition in copper-tin alloy powders containing 32.6 wt pct Sn. Alloy lump specimens exhibited entirely 6 phase after fairly slow cooling (air cooling) from above 350°C and were so brittle that they could be easily crushed to-200 mesh in a percussion mortar. X-ray diffraction study of the as-crushed powders (-200 mesh) revealed 100 pct 6 phase with very slight line broadening effects due to strain introduced by crushing. THE education of adolescents to perform the duties and assume the responsibilities of maturity has been a characteristic of human society since the dawn of history. In the beginning the members of the immediate family performed this function, and in modern life they still have an important part in it. Possibly religion was the first field in which education began to be functional; young people were sent for instruction to a teacher who had a broader and deeper knowledge of the subject than was possessed by the family. It does not seem necessary for our purpose to attempt to determine how, when, or where instruction in the practical arts first began to become functional, and the brief outline which follows must suffice. The discovery and utilization of mineral substances to improve and maintain the conditions of human living is a practical art, which must have had an almost accidental origin and have been developed by empirical experiments. We do not know, nor would it be useful to try to fancy, how men first learned that they could make use of mineral substances to their benefit, but however that knowledge was initially gained it was certainly trans- mitted through instruction in the family. At fist such activities must have been merely a minor part of the making of a living, bit in time those who excelled found it better to devote them-

The section along the left bank of the Susquehanna, in Lancaster County, from Falmouth to the Maryland line, which the writer made in 1877 to accompany his report on that county, was redrawn by Professor Lesley, as stated in the prefatory'letter to Vol. CCC. (p. x.).* As then stated, neither the numerous data, nor the general features of the structure obtained by the writer, were changed ; but enough was done to make a discrepancy between the text and the section as given; and some important points were made less clear in the published section than they were in the MS. map. Amongst other portions of the section, that between the railroad stations, 1190 to 1224, gives the impression on the published maps of a much too definite superposition. A few words will be devoted to this region in the following communication. There is absolutely no room to doubt the structure for about four miles on .each side of the Tocquan axis. The dips are gentle, and in opposite directions, and the lithological characters constant within ordinary limits of variation, nor do these characters resemble those of the rocks which flank these gneisses and mica schists to the northwest and the southeast. For the same reasons it is evident that the rocks which occur within these eight miles or so, represent an horizon below the basement of the fossiliferous or palaezoic series. Considering the truly wonderful natural resources of the United States, and the variety and extent of uses for hydraulic cement at the present day, it seems strange that the manufacture of the artificial product called Portland cement has not been introduced here. Possibly the reason may be we have in different States of the Union rock deposits from which a cement can be obtained that is as good, and some claim even better, because of a more uniform quality, than the English product after it has been subjected to transportation across the ocean. One of these natural cement-rock deposits is found in the northern part of the city of Buffalo, and its manufacture has been carried on successfully for the past eleven years by the Buffalo Cement co., Mr. L. J. Bennett, President. The quarries cover an area of about two hundred acres, of which only twenty-five acres have been exhausted up to date; and the supply is assured for years to come. One acre yields on an average 80,000 barrels of cement; hence 12,000,000 barrels is a low estimate of what these quarries will yield before they are exhausted. According to the Geology of New York this cement-rock deposit is called the Water-Lime group, and forms in this section the uppermost member of the Upper Silurian. Its outcrop can be traced along the base of the second limestone terrace of Western New York, but at Buffalo a very large part of the overlying Corniferous limestone has been removed by natural agencies, leaving only about eight feet (six feet of rock and two feet of clay) on the top of the cement-rock, and thus furnishing the conditions for successful quarrying at a minimum expense. Variations in the composition of the liquid phase of natural reservoirs which are continuous through significant ranges in elevation have been noted by petroleum technologists. In general, there is a greater gas-oil ratio and the gravity of the oil is higher in production from the upper parts of the formation. In the present paper the possible changes in composition with elevation which would result from the attainment of thermodynamic equilibrium in a uniform gravitational field have been evaluated for a naturally occurring hydrocarbon liquid, a binary hydrocarbon liquid phase and a binary hydrocarbon gas. The results indicate a progressive decrease in the mole fraction of the components from methane through the butanes with increasing depth, accompanied by a corresponding increase in the amount of the heavier components making up the system. The magnitude of these variations is perhaps insufficient to explain completely the variations in the properties of the liquid phase that are encountered at various elevations within a particular producing horizon. However, the changes are significant and the treatment presents an example of the application of thermodynamic data to the evaluation of the properties of hydrocarbon fluids under the conditions approaching those encountered in natural reservoirs. Theoretical Considerations Muskat1 has discussed the work of earlier authors relating to the equilibrium relationships of multicomponent systems in a gravitational field. He also presented explicit solutions for several cases and discussed the physical significance of gravitational concentration gradients. In engineering work it is customary to consider the pressure, the temperature and the composition of a phase to be the independent variables sufficient to establish its state. This procedure neglects the effect of gravitational or other types of fields upon the energy associated with the system and assumes, among other things, that the pressure is uniform in

TENTATIVE -reservations for the cruise to Vene-zuela and the West Indies have been coming in nicely, but there is plenty of room yet for mem-bers and their friends. The exact schedule is even yet not entirely fixed. Owing to difficulty in securing the release. as, early as had been hoped, of the Lapland, which is so particularly well adapted to this cruise, the time has been shortened. The steamer is now scheduled to sail at midnight on Jan. 30 or 31, the exact date still to be determined, and to return on Feb. 20. This change will so shorten the time as to permit many more to attend as they need not be so long. away from their business. It .will necessitate cutting out the pro-posed day at Kingston in Jamaica, and, if the steamer is -not available until Jan. 31, may also necessitate passing Bermuda without a stop. The time remaining will, however, allow a stop of one and a half days at Havana, a full day, on the Canal, Zone with opportunity to go through the locks, the Culebra Cut, and to see Panama, and the five days, planned in Venezuela: Just how many can be taken into Lake Maracaibo and the oil fields will depend on the local transportation that can be made available. It may be necessary to restrict this shore party as to numbers, but if so, something interesting will be provided to fill the time of the others. At other points accommodations will be ample for all Members of the excursion will get back in time to register and attend the smoker on the opening day of the meeting as also possibly the Monday after-noon sessions if any be held. The usual Institute rules for excursions will be fol-lowed assigning space in the order of application with members first. Guests vouched for by members will be heartily welcomed. The steamer rate varies accord-ing to the accommodations chosen. There are a limited number of one and two berth rooms at the minimum of $250 per passenger with plenty of room at $300 to $500, according to space and location. The old do not love to see the young pass away from the light of the sun before them. Fathers would fain keep their sons by their side to the. end of life ; but the old Greeks, who loved the old gods, were wont to moderate their grief with the sweet superstition that only those whom their gods especially loved died early. The Christian church found consolation in that superstition applied in a new form to its new sorrows, and paid its most enthusiastic devotion to the memories of its young and beautiful martyrs. The natural science of our century is robbing us fast of this and all other superstitions, sweet as well as bitter, and leaving us for consolation to the teaching—colder, yet kinder—of personal fortitude and that optimism Which intelligently translates the Cosmos of Humboldt back into its old name of the Harmonia of Pythagoras. The Homeric Kataclothes, the three fates, are dead and gone for us, with that old world which comprehended none of the laws of cause and effect, and sorrowed for those who were cut off from the land of the living without hope of more than a shadowy existence beyond the river of death. All the more the ancients cherished the memory of their dead and lavished their choicest art upon their monuments. We moderns have lost the monumental arts, but we better keep the monuments which our dead leave behind them. No one of us who has done good work can fail to be remembered; and in an Institute like this, which keeps the press at work, an immortality in the memory of men is more possible, more certain, for every one of its members than the greatest heroes of antiquity could anticipate for themselves. It is proposed in this paper to discuss some of the chemical and physical principles involved in the manufacture and use of this important by-product obtained in the manufacture of steel by the basic process. The name, " phosphate slag," is adopted as a sort of compromise between "Thomas slag" and "tetrabasic phosphate." By the first of these latter names, viz., " Thomas slag," it is known in Germany, Austria, France, and the other continental countries, and in England, and is more easily apprehended by those who have no special Knowledge of chemistry, while the name " tetrabasic phosphate," being descriptive of the nature of the slag, is perhaps the best. It is but seldom that a discovery of such moment to two great industries is to be chronicled in the history of technical science. On the one hand, the manufacture of iron and steel has been greatly benefited, while on the other hand, the effects already noticed, and still to follow, to the agriculturalist, are of scarcely less conseqnence. The great majority of iron ores in the world, perhaps 90 per cent. of then), are now available for the steel manufacturer, while the manufacturer, and more especially the consumer, of artificial manures is relieved from the fear of the exhaustion of the crude phosphates. We have in phosphate slag, therefore, a product of the highest importance to those who make and we steel and fertilizers. Two great industries, which heretofore have had but little in common, are thus brought into close connection with each other, and the results sure to follow, if one may judge from the history of the past ten years, cannot fail to be of great and increasing value. These results may be compared with those which followed the introduction of the cupriferous Spanish pyrites into England for the manufacture of sulphuric acid. The copper extracted greatly reduced the cost of the acid, hence that of artificial manures. Cheap manures meant better farming and cheaper farm products, and these meant better and cheaper living to nearly all classes of society. IT is not possible to include in this paper, limited as it is in scope, the many diverse steps toward the reduction of mine accidents that are taken in the mines that produce the nation's coal. Every coal-producing state has enacted laws covering proper mining practices, and the major portion of these are directly related to the safety of the mine employees. The United States Bureau of Mines, the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, The American Mining Congress, a number of national, regional and state organizations, as well as the coal technical press, have covered time and time again all of the "do" and "don't" phases of mine operation that bear on the important question of mine and employee safety. Within the past 15 years The Union Pacific Coal Co. has attempted to put into practice in its mines in southern Wyoming these many good recommendations, finding some value in all, and yet, to secure substantial results, the management found it necessary to resort in the end to what might be referred to as "extra-territorial" methods. It is the writer's purpose to show in this paper that marked and even extraordinary betterment can be brought about when employer and employee work together with due sincerity. In presenting our own experi-ence, one that has been duplicated in so far as results are concerned on numerous other properties, no theory of perfection of management exists; on the other hand, our organization feels that as long as our record of accidents remains as shown by even our latest and best performance we still have far to go. Safety work in some form has been carried on in and about the mining properties of The Union Pacific Coal Co. since the first mine was opened at the now long-abandoned town of Carbon, Wyo., in 1868. On June 30, 1903, an explosion and subsequent mine fire occurred in mine No. 1 at Hanna, taking 169 lives, and a second explosion occurred in tile same mine on March 28, 1908, in which 59 additional lives were lost. INTRODUCTION THE bibliography of mining methods in the past few years has contained many articles dealing with the use of the diamond drill for blasthole drilling. In the Canadian mines, this method has been used with great success in stoping at Noranda, Aldermac, Waite Amulet, East Malartic and Sladen Malartic mines in the Province of Quebec. It has also been used at the Dorchester and Beattie gold mines in Duparquet, Quebec. The method has found useful application at Copper Mountain mine, British Colombia, and at Flin Flon mine in Manitoba. In the United States, the diamond drill blasthole method has been used at Cornwall Iron Ore Mines in Pennsylvania and at the Republic Steel Corporation magnetite properties in the Port Henry district of northern New York. In the Lake Superior iron district, the method has been used at the Anvil-Palms mine of Pickands, Mather and Co. at Bessemer, Mich., and is also used at the Book mine of the North Range Mining Co. at Alpha, Mich. Other companies in the district have also experimented in some degree with the method at some of their properties. This paper is being offered as a preliminary report on the use of the diamond drill method of stoping at the Book mine. Sufficient work has been done with it to prove its worth and it is the purpose of the article to present some results, operational details, equipment ideas and recommendations which we have found in its use at our mine. LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION The Book mine is situated about a mile north of the village of Alpha, in the NE-NE ¼ and the SE-NE ¼ of sec 12-42-33, between the Dunn mine and the Balkan-Judson mine, and about four miles southwest of the village of Crystal Falls, on the Menominee Range of Michigan. The property was found to have ore near surface in sufficient quantities for open-pit operations and stripping was begun in the latter part of 1942 to prepare it for ore production in 1943. During 1943, 288,447 tons of direct shipping ore were produced from the open pit and 382,933 tons in 1944. While the mine was being operated as an open pit some 350,000 tons of lean ore were stockpiled for later treatment. This material is being treated in a washing and jig plant and concentrates are produced during the shipping season. The ore bodies at the Book mine are characteristic of the Menominee Range. They are found on the flanks of sharply folded anticlines which have a fairly steep pitch to the northwest. The open-pit operations in 1943 and 1944 revealed two of these anticlinal structures. Tests carried out with both kaolin and silica slurries show that flocculants of the polyacrylamide type can be used to improve the thickening performance of hydrocyclones. This thickening improvement demonstrates that contrary to previously held theories, flocs can be formed which are capable of resisting the shear forces in a hydrocyclone. For the 1.25-in.-diam cyclone used, optimum thickening occurs when the flocculant solution is injected into the slurry stream at or near the feed inlet. Hydrocyclones offer many distinct advantages over gravity thickeners. These advantages include simplicity, low initial and operating costs, small space requirements, and flexibility of operation. In spite of these advantages hydrocyclones have not been widely used as thickeners. The main reason for their lack of application is that hydrocyclones are unable to efficiently remove semicolloidal particles (less than 5 microns) from the suspending solution. In gravity thickeners, the fine particles can be induced to form particle aggregates, or flocs, which have the settling characteristics of large particles. In the hydrocyclone, however, it was always assumed that the existence of shear would prevent the formation of flocs.1-3 Thus, if no floc structure is retained, the thickening hydrocyclone must be designed so that its separation size is below the size of the smallest particle to be recovered. To obtain a very small separation size requires the formation of very high centrifugal forces, which necessitates the use of small-diameter cyclones. Small hydrocyclones have, in turn, very low throughput capacities which render them impractical for many industrial thickening applications. Thus, if the effects of flocculation cannot be utilized, the usefulness of hydrocyclones as thickeners remains limited to pulps which contain no very fine particles. It is well established that most substances acquire a surface electric charge when brought into contact with an aqueous medium. The repulsive interactions between similarly charged particles act to prevent flocculation. One method of flocculating a dispersion is to neutralize the repulsive surface charges by the addition of an electrolyte. The reduction of the electrostatic surface charge (Zeta potential) then permits the universal van der Waals attractive forces to operate between the atoms of the various particles and form particle aggregates. The lime additions used by thickener operators promotes flocculation by this mechanism. A second method of flocculating a dispersion is by the addition of long-chain macromolecules. In this case flocculation is brought about by a bridging mechanism in which the molecules are adsorbed with part of their length on two or more particles, thus forming a molecular bridge between the particles.4,5 The molecules also form bridges between themselves when a single particle is bonded to several polymer molecules. The type of bonding between the flocculant molecule and the particle may be hydrogen bonding, chemical bonding, or electrolytic attraction.6 The flour and glue which are used as thickener additives are believed to promote flocculation in this manner. In the past decade synthetic long-chain polymers with extremely high flocculating capabilities have been developed. The flocs formed by these new polymeric flocculants are larger and more shear-resistant than those formed by the presence of electrolytes.7 The advent of these flocculants raises the question: Are the flocs formed by these synthetic polymers stable enough to resist the liquid shearing forces in a hydrocyclone? The investigations reported in this paper were carried out in order to provide some answers to this question. EXPERIMENTAL WORK For the bulk of the test work a 5% slurry of commercially available kaolin with an average particle size of 5 microns was used. An initial evaluation of the available flocculants was carried out to determine which flocculant formed the most shear-resistant flocs. A combination of the techniques used by Healy7 and Booth8 was used for this purpose. This initial study revealed that the neutral high-molecular weight polyacrylamides produced the most shear-resistant flocs. One of these flocculants, Separan MGL*, was selected and then used for all the hydrocyclone tests. The flocculant was dissolved in water and added to the hydrocyclone as a dilute solution.

Indian Creek Mine, newest of the St. Joseph Lead Co. properties, is located in southeast Missouri on the flanks of a buried porphyry ridge. Here the orebodies are very irregular in size and shape and have a regional pitch of about 15°, which may vary locally from 0 to 90°. To maintain an economical grade of ore, selective mining is imperative. The room and casual pillar method is employed with 20-ft diam pillars 35 ft apart where possible. Stopes vary in height from 10 to 55 ft. All are too small to supply a loading unit continuously.
