Isothermal sections in the copper -rich region of the Cu-Si-Zn a1by system have been determined at 8473 760; 6003 and 482°C by means of microscopic examination with confirmatory X-ray diffraction work. The stability of the bee 0 phase decreases both with decreasing temperature and with increasing copper content. The silicon-n&apos;ch 0 phase decomposes upon quenching from high temperatures either by a martensitic or by a "massive" transformation, depending upon the solute content. A two-phase equilibrium is found to exist in the Cu-Si-Zn system between the hep < phase of the Cu-Si system and the bee ß phase of the Cu-Zn system. It is shown that the isothermal limits of the primary solid solution at 760; 6003 and 482°C are in part affected by the intermediate phases which follow them in the ternary system Possible electron-concentration and size effects upon phase boundaries are discussed. ALTHOUGH the mechanical and physical properties of silicon brasses have been measured in great detail, the factors which influence these properties are not well-understood, partly because the knowledge of the phase relationships in the Cu-Si-Zn system is limited. Gould and Ray1 studied the effects of silicon upon the hardness and structure of Cu-15 pet Zn and Cu-40 pet Zn alloys. They proposed an isothermal section at 800°C which was not based upon experimental data, since the binary phase diagrams had not been completely determined. Using Cu-Si-Zn alloys containing approximately 5 wt pet Si, vaders2 determined the boundary, at 750°C, between the copper-rich solid solution and an unidentified second phase. Masing and wallbaum3 examined a vertical section through the ternary diagram in the region between Cu-20 pet Zn and Cu-10 pet Si alloys, but they emphasized uncertainty about their data. Mima and Hasegawa4 studied the liquidus surface of Cu-Si-Zn alloys, phase transformations in high silicon-bearing (20 to 25 at. pet) alloys,5 and the phase relations in low silicon-bearing Cu-Si-Zn alloys.6 Their experiments were based upon thermal analyses and metallographic observations. The compositions of the phase boundaries were not determined with high precision, and the crystal structures of the phases were not reported. Because of uncertainties in the existing literature, it became of interest to determine more accurately the phase relations in copper-rich Cu-Si-Zn alloys. The crystal structures, stability, and phase boundaries of the primary solid solutions and several intermediate phases were determined, and the data are reported as partial isothermal sections.

The Globe Mining District is in the southeast central part of Arizona, in Gila County. Globe, with a population of about 7000, is the terminus of the Arizona Eastern R.R., a branch line 130 miles long that connects with the Southern Pacific R.R. at Bowie. In 1874, prospectors crossing the Pinal Mountains from the west located what is generally known as the Old Dominion mine. For several years, it attracted little attention, because of the greater interest aroused by the discovery of high-grade silver ores in some of the foothills northeast of Globe. About six years later, the prospector turned his attention to the abundant copper ore revealed by surface workings along the Old Dominion vein, and, in 1884, the Old Dominion company erected two 30-ton furnaces. From 1888 to 1893, the Old Dominion company is said to have maintained an average annual production of about 8,000,000 Ib. of copper. Until Dec. 1, 1898, all supplies had to be freighted into Globe by wagons and the mines of the district operated intermittently because of high expenses, but with the advent of the railroad the Old Dominion company continued to be a large and steady producer. In the Globe district, the production of copper far exceeds in importance that of any other metal. There are four operating companies along the Old Dominion vein and the total annual product of these properties for 1923 was about 45,000,000 lb. of copper. The unit size of the mineral tracts in the district is the regulation mining claim, 600 ft. wide by 1500 ft. long, and all ownerships are held in fee. Globe is 3600 ft. above sea level, and lies between the Apache MOUntains to the east and the Pinal Mountains to the west. The principal drainage of the district is northward through Pinal creek into the Salt River. The general slope from the high point along the vein, where the Superior & Boston mine is, to Pinal creek, where the Old Dominion mines are, is about 250 ft. to the mile. Geology The oldest rocks in the district are pre-Cambrian crystalline schists known as the Pinal schist, which are the basement upon which all the later rocks were deposited. ON the afternoon of Feb. 20 of this year a new volcano was born in the center of the State of Michoacan, Mexico, about 100 miles inland from the Pacific Coast. Creation of this new mountain - forming crater began on an almost flat cultivated field at the south margin of a small basin about a mile in diameter and having an altitude of approximately 6800 ft. above sea level. This basin is connected to a gently inclined plain that forms the Parangaricutiro valley, the chief town of this municipality, bearing the same name as the valley, being situated three miles from the site of the new crater. The village of Paracutin, from which the new volcano received its name, is about one mile to the northwest of the crater. From the City of Mexico to the volcano is a distance of 330 miles. The paved highway running from Mexico City to Guadalajara, by way of Toluca and Morelia, is left at Carapan; from here another paved branch highway goes to Uruapan. The town of Paracutin is reached by a narrow dirt road 18 miles from Uruapan and connects with a road leading to Parangaricutiro where horses may be hired for a 40-minute trip to a place where visitors can enjoy a magnificent view of the volcano. It is possible to get within half a mile of the point of eruption in this manner.

Grain growth across the bond region in Pressure bonded copper was found to be mainly dependent upon the presence or absence of microvoids, but it was also found that prior history, bonding pressure, bonding time, and bonding temperature are important variables. An increase in pressure, time, or temperature tends to promote grain growth in the interfacial region. Polygonization is observed after pressure bonding except for specimens previously annealed at temperatures on the order of 1800°F or higher. The dislocation density in bonded specimens was found to be greater in the bond region. THE bonding of metals by the application of gas pressure at elevated temperatures is a relatively new process, having been developed over the past 10 years. The technique, as described by Paprocki, Hodge, and Boyer,l is unique in that assemblies of many parts and complex shapes can be bonded with a negligible amount of deformation. The process thus differs metallurgically from pressure welding, cold welding, and recrystallization welding in that deformation occurs only in a microscopic region whereas, in general, the welding requires severe deformation and may extend the contact surface by a factor of 3 to 10 during the welding. From a practical standpoint, pressure welding is not amenable for bonding large surfaces. During the time in which Paprocki and coworkers were deve1oping the process, West2 established aproc-ess,for bonding aluminum to uranium, and Barnes and Maze? developed a gas-pressure-bonding technique for nickel and copper. Recently, Fugardi and Zambro4 have used equipment similar to that developed by Paprocki and coworkers to establish parameters for bonding stainless steel, aluminum, and zirconium. Most of the investigations on pressure bonding have been empirical in nature and, although methods have been developed for bonding such metals as molybdenum, columbium, titanium, zirconium, and stainless steel, the information concerning the mechanism of bonding is limited. Several workers5"7 have studied the pressure bonding of dissimilar metals in order to gain information on diffusion and formation of inter-metallic phases under application of pressure. Clapson and Robbins8 have shown by a series of annealing studies that voids in the interfacial boundary of roll-bonded copper can prevent movement of the boundary until the voids are spaced far enough apart to prevent pinning. They also indicated that recrystallization and grain growth can eliminate the voids. In this paper it is shown that voids are the major detriment to grain growth across pressure-bonded interfaces, but it is also shown that prior history, bonding pressure, bonding time, and bonding temperature are

That lead and zinc deposits are the result of prolonged,, slow deposition is the idea of most students of ore deposits, and in many cases, where the ore-bearing solutions have been very weak or the precipitating conditions have been very feeble, the ore accumulations have undoubtedly taken a long period of time. As these two vital conditions have been subject to great variations in the different mining camps, the following example is highly interesting in showing that deposition can be very rapid under favorable conditions, geologically speaking, and also extremely recent. In fact, the writer is inclined to regard most, if not all, of the Mississippi Valley deposits of lead and zinc as probably being very young, at least not older than Tertiary, if not Quarternary, in age. The extensive Joplin lead and zinc district, in southwestern Missouri, which is about 60 years old and has numerous mines that were abandoned from 1 to 50 years ago, shows that the lead and zinc today are in an active condition of solution and redeposition, although these two metals occur in the predominant form of sulfides. The mine waters from the older and more or less abandoned portions of the district are frequently so acid, mainly from the oxidation of associated pyrite, as to necessitate the use of wooden pipes and pumps. The first boom in the Oklahoma zinc fields, which is the southwestern extension of the Joplin district, occurred when ore was accidentally struck in drilling a water well. Among the mines then opened up was the Mission mine, at Lincolnville, Ottawa County, Okla. This mine was opened in 1903 in lean "sheet ground," or a flat blanket formation of chert carrying disseminated zinc blende, or "jack," and galena. Theore-body was very free from iron pyrites and the concentrates were very high grade, the "mineral," or lead concentrates, assayed 80 to 85 per cent. lead and the jack, or sphalerite, assayed 60 to 65 per cent. zinc. The orebody was very shallow, occurring at a depth of 76 to 95 ft. (22 to 28 m.) and very wet, requiring three or four pumps to handle the water. The mine was operated until 1914, when it was closed by litigation and immediately filled with water. The second Oklahoma boom, five years ago, opened up the large, active camps of Picher, Tar River, and Century, which are located 2 to 5 mi. west of Lincolnville. Manganese-ores are known to exist in the Caucasus in a number of localities, viz., in the government of Kutais, near the village of Chiaturi; in the same goverilment near the Choruk river, southward from Batum; and in the governments of Erivan and Tiflis. In smaller quantities they are found in various other places also. The first-mentioned deposits are by far the most important; the others being not only less extensive, but remote from present means of communication, and, from their character, expensive to work, although in some cases the ore is of a superior quality. All the manganese-ore now known in the market as a Caucasian " ore comes from Chiaturi, no other deposits in the Caucasus having been worked commercially; movements have been made, however, towards the exploitat,ion of some of those on the Choruk river. The Manganese-Ore District of Chiaturi. General Remarks, Statistics, Etc.—No other known deposit of manganese-ore can approach that of Chiaturi in capacity for producing large quantities of high-grade ore at a low cost. The deposit is said to have been discovered in 1848, by the geologist Abich, but the first shipments were not made until 1879, when 871 tons* were produced. Since that time, the production has steadily increased, until now the world relies on this deposit for about one-half its supply of manganese-ore. The industry is also of great importance locally, and aftords a livelihood to a considerable proportion of the population of the district in which the deposit is situated.

INTRODUCTION The Empress Nickel Mine is situated forty-eight kilometres west of Kadoma in the Zhombe Communal Land of Zimbabwe. The mine came into operation in late 1968 based on a proved and probable ore reserve of twenty million tonnes. The initial production rate was 55 000 tonnes per month from underground. This was boosted to 85 000 tonnes per month in mid 1970 when the opencast operation came into production. The mining method at Empress is sub-level open stoping with main haulages mined at ninety metre intervals and sub-levels at eighteen metres. The extremely wide ore body of up to one hundred metres in width has necessitated leaving extremely large rib pillars and sill pillars in position to maintain mine stability and to act as regional support of the hanging wall. In early 1976 the opencast operation had reached its final economic depth and it was then necessary to increase underground production to 85 000 tonnes per month. Since a large portion of the ore reserve remained in both rib and sill pillars, it was necessary to embark on a positive pillar recovery programme. For this reason it was decided to introduce a sandfilling programme for the mined-out stopes and a modified system of sub-level open stoping with post filling of the lower stopes. ORE BODY GEOLOGY AND GEOMETRY The Empress orebody outcrop has a strike length of nine hundred and fifty metres on a north west - south east axis. It is a steeply dipping (65&apos; - 75&apos;) tabular orebody of gabbroic rock which has been extensively altered. THE results described in this article are based on field work conducted during the periods April-May, 1939, and May-July, 1940. The United States Potash Co. is mining potash on Government land under a permit from the Department of the Interior and the geophysical investigation was completed under a cooperative arrangement made between that company and the Conservation Branch of the Geological Survey. The writer, a member of the Section of Chemistry and Physics of the Geologic Branch, was assigned to this investigation. Four definite objectives were in mind for the geophysical work in the studies over the salt deposits. The first was to determine the measure of success that could be attained in this type of work with the resistivity methods that were to be employed. These methods had been introduced into the work of the Conservation Branch by Benjamin E. Jones for the investigation of dam sites, and have been used under his direction by the author for such work. If the method proved to be applicable, an effort was to be made to contour the top of the salt beds and also the other formation boundaries known to be present in this area. Salt-water aquifers were to be studied in an effort to determine their boundaries, and an attempt was to be made to delineate the potash-bearing beds. EARLIER STUDIES Others have made, and reported, resistivity studies over saliferous deposits in different areas. Friede1 and Messrs. Schlumberger2 reported geophysical work performed in the discovery of the salt domes of Alsace; Carrette and Kelly3 described the geology of the same area. Leonardon and Kelly4 published a resistivity curve obtained over the Hettenschlag dome, and a further discussion of this same area was given by the Messrs. Schlumberger5 in a communication. Messrs. Alty6 described studies on salt deposits in which the single-probe method was used. Sinerez7 mentions that electrical methods were tried over salt deposits in Spain. Geoffrey and Charrin8 show a resistivity curve obtained over marl, gypsiferous marl and salt which is similar to that obtained over the New Mexico salt deposits. Kelly9 reported resistivity work performed with the ground comparator of Zuschlag over the salt deposits near Syracuse, N. Y., where the Salina formation is at a depth of 700 to B00 ft. Some structural studies on the potash basin of Alsace are described by Poldini.10 Another single-probe resistivity study, made over salt deposits in New Mexico, is briefly described by Heiland,11 through the courtesy of Harry Aurand, of the Midwest Refining Co.

Discussion of the paper of B. H. Dunshee, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 30, August, 1913, pp. 1511 to 1531. GEORGE E. MOULTHROP, Butte, Mont.:-The recording for the first time by Mr. Dunshee, in a readily usable form, of the various systems of square-set framing applied in the Butte district is a valuable contribution to mining information. The many different methods of framing employed, due to the individual ideas of superintendents and foremen of segregated companies, have given full opportunity to determine the best framing for the conditions as found in these mines, and the final adoption of a system uniform for all the mines has come about through a study of these various methods and an experience covering a period of many years. The sawed 10 by 10 in. and 12 by 12 in. timbers undoubtedly give the best satisfaction; and the style of framing the sawed timber that under all conditions has given the best practical results is that used in the Anaconda group and other mines, described and recommended by Mr. Dunshee. In this framing the posts have a horn 2 in. high and 6 in. square, the cap end having dimensions of 3 by 6 in. Instead of the framed girt shown in the drawings of the Anaconda group, the 6 by 10 in. girt adopted at some other mines, which fits into the cap and post framing with no other preparation than cutting the timber to the necessary length, fills all the necessary requirements for strength and affects a material saving in timber and labor. This, as Mr. Dunshee states, is without doubt the type of framing which would be adopted as a standard for 10 by 10 in. sawed timbers if sawed timber sets were to be used in the future generally. But saw-timber for the mines was becoming scarce and expensive, and round timber for the square sets furnished an alternative which provided, at greatly reduced cost, material which in every way supplied the requirements of the mining conditions. The use of the round timber with a satisfactory framing makes available a conveniently located and large source of supply which up to this time has served no useful industrial purpose. Particularly is this true of small timber, which is still standing in great quantities in the forests where the trees more desirable for commercial purposes have already been cut and marketed.

This paper deals with an investigation of the use of steam filtration for filter cake dewatering and shows that it may be applied on a practical scale. The advent of larger quantities of minus 1/4 in. coal in the raw feed to the preparation plant and the necessity of recovering this material has made the problem of meeting product moisture specifications more difficult. For a number of years thermal dryers have been used advantageously as a means of reducing fine coal moisture content where the over-all economics would justify such an installation. However, these units are not without their drawbacks because of high capital and operating costs, safety hazards and possible degradation of the product, and thus an alternative method of moisture reduction is highly desirable. After the various mechanical variables associated with filtration have been optimized, an examination of theory shows that surface tension and liquid viscosity are the only two remaining variables which might be altered to reduce moisture content. A lowering of the surface tension within the limits of normal wetting agent dosage results in a rather insignificant decrease in cake moisture content. Not until the dosage is increased to a point well beyond this limit is there an appreciable decrease in moisture. At these high dosage levels, interfacial tension is a major factor contributing to the appreciable moisture reduction obtained. Since no suitable method has been developed to recover and recycle this wetting agent, this phenomena is not of practical significance. On the other hand, a reduction in liquid viscosity has a pronounced effect on cake moisture. While it is readily apparent that one method of reducing liquid viscosity is to heat the entire feed slurry, it is equally apparent that this would not be an economic approach except, perhaps, in certain isolated cases. It does, however, suggest that water circuits should be designed to conserve heat as much as possible and to make use of any waste heat that may be available. The use of hot air as a heat carrying medium for drying porous materials on a filter has been practiced for many years. However, this method is restricted to materials with a high air rate in the order of 100 cfm/ ft2 because of the low heat release per unit weight of air passing through the cake. The normal fine coal filter cake has an air porosity far too low to make this a practical approach. Various types of radiant heating devices have been investigated and can significantly lower moisture content at reasonable thermal efficiency. However,

IN anticipation of a shortage of labor for hand-tram-ming at the Cliffs shaft mine of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at Ishpeming, Mich., early in 1923 three 4-ton Goodman storage-battery locomotives, equipped with Edison batteries, were purchased. Storage-battery locomotives were chosen for this work because the expense and time required to put up trolley-wire and to bond the rails of the complicated system of tracks on the levels, where the locomotives were to be used, would not have been warranted by the amount of ,ore to be handled. The only changes in the tracks necessary for storage-battery locomotives were new switches and extra ties and braces on curves. The tracks were 24-in. gage, and were laid with 20-lb. rail. Edison batteries were chosen, because it was desired to charge the batteries from the trolley circuit already, in the mine, and this would have been impracticable with lead batteries. Each locomotive is equipped with 126 A-4 Edison cells, which are charged in series from the 240-volt trolley circuit while the trolley locomotives are running; and are discharged in parallel in two banks of 63 cells each. These locomotives were so successful that later 5 smaller locomotives, weighing 11/2 tons each, were pur-chased for use e with cars that are filled by hand and on levels where the amount of ore handled is small. These locomotives, built by the Geo. D. Whitcomb Co. of Rochelle, Ill., are equipped with batteries of 40 A-4 Edison cells each, the cells being the same as those, on the larger locomotives. They are charged from mer-curial-are rectifiers. These locomotives are operated by the trammers themselves, and have not special oper-ators like the larger machines. The trammers are all young men of American birth, and take quickly to the operation of machinery, and the simplicity of the con-trol on these locomotives has made special training unnecessary. A survey of the results was made by the A. C. Nielsen So., an excerpt from which follows: Eight Edison-equipped battery locomotives are now in use at an Ishpeming mine of the Cleveland-. Cliffs Iron Co. This equipment was installed to take the place of men who formerly pushed loaded cars by hand. Results have been very satisfactory and the de-pendable, trouble-free operation of the Edison batteries is considered to have been an important factor in the effectiveness of the new hauling method.

Under sponsorship of NIOSH, Eastern Associated Coal Corp., with the Harvard School of Public Health acting as a subcontractor, has determined for the first time the effective protection provided to working underground coal miners wearing approved half-mask dust respirators. This was done by conducting 187 man-shifts of in-mine testing in four different coal mines; included in this testing were 37 different test subjects representing 11 different job classifications and 5 different models of respirators. Presently available respirators on average provided significant protection levels to working miners even though on an intermittent use basis. However, "average" protection values were well below those achieved under laboratory conditions. Protection levels varied from man to man in a given work crew and from day to day for a given man. In addition, some of the factors affecting use and effectiveness of presently used respirators are discussed, as are areas in which improvements are needed, and the need to consider these improvements in context of a systems approach.

AN investigation has been made of the multiplying factors for some of the more common alloying and deoxidizing elements for use in calculating hardenability of steel according to Grossmann&apos;s method.1 The factors for manganese, silicon, and aluminum that were reported in an earlier communication2 have been confirmed by microscopic determination of the half-martensite structure rather than on the basis of an empirically determined hardness corresponding to a half-martensite structure. Measurement of ideal critical diameter by microscopic examination was found to he necessary for other alloying elements, and multiplying factors for nickel, chromium, molybdenum, zirconium, vanadium, titanium, and boron have been determined. The nature and order of magnitude of the multiplying factors reflect the effect of the alloying elements on the structural character of the steel. Except for nickel and vanadium, the multiplying factors agree fairly well with previously published results. Good correlation between actual and calculated ideal critical diameters has been found in developing the multiplying factors and in checking the results against fairly simple steels. However, some discrepancies have suggested the need for a more thorough study of low-carbon and complex steels. TESTING PROCEDURE The investigation was conducted principally on steels made at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc., in high-frequency induction furnaces using Armco iron and standard alloying materials. However, a few open-hearth steels were used in establishing the effect of nickel, and the hardenability factor for boron was based primarily on open-hearth steels. All bars were normalized prior to the machining of Jominy hardenability specimens. The Jominy test was carried out under conditions standard for the test.3 Austenitizing temperatures judged to-be-appropriate for the composi¬tions of the steels were used., Chemical analysis was determined on a sample taken adjacent to the Jominy specimen. Residual amounts of phosphorus, sulphur, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and copper were determined on only one heat of each group made with the same materials during the same period. "Acid-soluble" aluminum and zirconium rather than total amounts were determined, as it is considered probable that the acid-soluble amount is more representative of the effective alloy. As tin was present to the extent of only 0.002 per cent, its effect was neglected. PRESENT-DAY design of launders is essentially an art depending to a marked degree upon the experience of the designer, whose problem is that of determining the dimensions of a conduit that will transport the pulp within the physical limitations of the plant and in the most economical manner. This paper has been prepared in an effort to place launder design upon a more scientific basis. A method is developed from elementary principles and presented in a form that may be used directly by the designer in determining launder dimensions.. The equations that are developed are believed to represent an advance over older ones, in that they give due consideration to all the pertinent variables, either including them in the analysis or showing that they may be neglected within the limits of applicability of the equations. Experimental data from several sources are used in evaluating the coefficients that are not determined in the mathematical analysis. On the basis of the material presented, it is concluded that launders may be designed with a much greater degree of accuracy than previously believed possible, when due consideration is given to all the factors involved in the problem. However, a great deal of work still remains to be done in the laboratory before a complete answer to all the questions in launder design can be made available. HISTORY OF LAUNDER DESIGN Among the references1-11 are cited accounts of many experiments that have been conducted in an effort to advance the knowledge of the flow of liquid-solid mixtures in flumes and pipes. With three notable exceptions, this work was carried on in such a manner that the results have limited value in solving the general problem, since not all the pertinent variables were measured and controlled. The exceptions are found in the works of Blue,6 Gilbert,7 and Blatch,11 who exercised great care in controlling and measuring all the significant quantities involved in the experimentation. It is notable that much of the work done by men directly connected with the mineral industries1-4 lacks somewhat in completeness, owing apparently to preconceived notions concerning the factors that determine the flow. For example, many measurements on flow in pipes and flumes carrying liquid-solid mixtures determined only the slope and percentage of solids, with no mention of size of particles, depth of flow, roughness of channel or specific gravity of solids. Material in current handbooks8,9 and textbooks is based largely on the experimental work cited above. Although most discussions of the topic-include statements that the results to be obtained by using the data presented are limited by the fact that all variables have not been considered, it is

As a part of a symposium on the relations of structure to ore deposition, in February 1938, the writer presented some tentative opinions derived from his experience with a number of important lead-zinc replacement deposits. These ideas were set forth, as a basis for discussion and a stimulus to further inquiry, in a mimeographed leaflet that read as follows: Intimate acquaintance with a number of lead and zinc deposits in metamorphosed limestones seems to indicate the existence of certain common features from which can be established some general principles governing the localization of ore in this type of formation. It is suspected that these principles can be applied, with modifications, to mineralization in unmetamorphosed limestone. In metamorphosed formations, some observed rules are as follows: 1. Bands or masses of pure limestone are very resistant to replacement by ore solutions, and are likely either to contain no ore or to resist replacement until near the end of mineralization. The reason for this apparently is physical, not chemical, since microscopic data indicate that when ore is deposited by far the greater part of it substitutes for carbonate. The chief factor is believed to be a lack of porosity in massive limestone that has undergone flowage and recrystallization. 2. Masses of intensely siliceous or silicated rock are likewise unfavorable ore receptacles. This seems to be accounted for by two factors: (a) chemical unsuit-ability or resistance to replacement, and (b) physical resistance to small-scale brecci-ation, which might faeilitate the opening of effective channelways for solutions. Some low-grade ore may occur, however, and also sporadic fracture fillings. 3. The optimum condition for ore reception appears to be found in bands or areas containing carbonate and silicates (or quartz) intimately mingled in something like equal proportions. In this situation movement is likely to result in mixed flowage and fracture, producing a finc-textured porosity that admits solutions freely and provides access to an abundance of replaceable carbonate. Cleavage cracks in some minerals such as diopside are believed to facilitate the penetration of solutions. 4. Certain minerals or assemblages are regarded as favorable impurities in a limestone and others as unfavorable. Original quartz, and subsequently developed diopside, and perhaps garnet, are typical favorable pre-ore gangue; in general rather equidimensional, brittle minerals. Tremolite, biotite, and probably wollastonite, are typical unfavorable pre-ore gangue; in general highly elongated and somewhat flexible minerals likely to develop under strong shearing stresses. 5. Tentative opinion is that the ratio of lime and magnesia in a limestone is of little or no importance.

In the past, little attention has been paid to the costs of ventilation, since it seldom represented a significant portion of the total mining cost. However, in recent years adverse mining conditions and increases in power charges have caused ventilation costs to rise. The federal regulations have set minimum standards for volumetric airflow rates in underground coal mines. As a mine develops, the air volume and pressure requirements increase. There are several methods by which the quantity of airflow to the mine and working faces can be increased. Some of the methods include (1) increasing main fan output or replacing the main fan by a new higher capacity fan, (2) reducing leakage across stoppings and overcasts, (3) adding a new ventilation shaft or borehole, (4) reducing resistance to airflow by reducing the resistance factor of the individual airways, increasing the number of airways (especially the parallel airways), or re- arranging the air courses by using the available entries, and (5) using auxiliary ventilation systems. This paper addresses the cost-benefit analysis of several of these alternatives as applied to a large operating coal mine located in southern Illinois. Pressure and quantity surveys were conducted under-ground, and measurements were taken at the main exhaust fans on the surface. The existing ventilation network was modeled by using the Penn State ventilation simulator. The input data included the configuration of branches, resistance of each branch (including a component for shock losses), and changes in pressure and volume. The results of the simulation were compared with the survey data to check the merits and accuracy of the model network. The net- work was designed to take into account shafts, major entries, overcasts, regulators, gob areas, working faces, and major leakage paths. The model network served as the basis for the cost analyses of networks designed for increased airflow. The applicable alternatives for increasing airflow were simulated. Performance data obtained from these simulation runs were utilized to conduct the cost-effectiveness analysis. The costs for each f the alternatives included capital, operating and maintenance costs. These costs were expressed as annual costs in terms of dollars per cfm of circulating air, taking into account the economic life associated with each of the alternatives. The benefits were expressed as increased airflow quantity in the critical sections. The result of these analyses show that for the short-range plans evaluated, the most cost-effective way of increasing airflow at this mine would be to reduce leakage through stoppings and overcasts.

IT has been demonstrated that alloys in systems structurally analogous to steel undergo reactions during heat treatment similar to those of steel, and yet very little work has been done on such systems, particularly from the standpoint of isothermal transformation. The literature shows that most of the isothermal work has been done on copper-alu-minum alloys.&apos;-3 One paper has been reported on a eutectoid copper-silicon alloy,&apos; and one on iron-nitrogen alloys.&apos; There are no published reports of previous investigations on the isothermal transformation of a eutectoid beryllium bronze. At least two papers have been reported on isothermal age-hardening phenomena in beryllium-copper alloys of lower beryllium content.5,6 No information on eutectoid transformations in this alloy is given in Rimbach&apos;s book, "Beryllium." &apos; This paper reports the results of an investigation on the isothermal transformation characteristics of a eutectoid beryllium bronze. Materials Used and Procedure The eutectoid beryllium bronze used in this investigation was centrifugally cast at the Ampco Metal Co., Inc.. Milwaukee. Wis. A master beryl-lium-copier alloy, purchased from the Brush Beryllium Co., was used to make the beryllium addition to the copper. The alloy was melted under a protective carbon cover and Centrifugally cast into a graphite mold preheated to 920°F. Some trouble with segregation of beryllium in the melt was encountered but was eliminated by violent stirring during melting and pouring. Since very thin .specimens were used for the various heat treatments, only one casting of the four prepared was necessary for the complete isothermal study, thus eliminating any discrepancies caused by a change in composition. The analysis of this casting was 94.035 pct copper and 5.965 pct beryllium. A slight trace of iron was found. The castings were sawed into specimens approximately 3/32 in. in thickness. The specimens were first given an "austenitizing" heat treatment at 788°C, well within the single phase beta region, in a vertical tube furnace. The specimens were then quenched individually into an adjacent molten salt bath and held there for a definite time, after which they were quenched into water at room temperature. Temperature was held to ± 2°C in the salt bath. No homogenizing treatment was given the specimens other than the soak at 788°C. Despite the fact that this was a cast alloy, no evidence of segregation or coring was found in the microstructure of any specimen, either as cast or as heat-treated. Upon completion of the heat treatment, the speci-mens were subjected to metallographic examination

EFFECTIVE use of rotary kiln waste gases to preheat dry pulverized materials has been demonstrated in full-scale operation at the Allentown Portland Cement Co. plant, Evansville, Pa. Pulverized raw materials are preheated in suspension in the gas stream in a multi-stage counterflow process which draws the gases through a series of cyclone collectors. Upon entering the first cyclone stage the material, continuously delivered and suspended in the gas stream, is successively collected and resuspended until it discharges through the kiln feed pipe. Gas and material contact time is thus prolonged, providing a high degree of heat recuperation with a very low temperature differential between gas and material at the final stage. The suspension preheater, developed by Klockner-Humboldt-Deutz AG of Cologne, Germany, was first installed at the Norddeutsche Huette plant, Oslebshausen, Germany. Similar preheaters are now in operation at three other German cement plants. The first American installation, at the Allentown Portland Cement Co. plant, was designed and manufactured by Fuller Co. of Catasauqua, Pa., Humboldt&apos;s licensee for the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
