In 1956 the discovery of nickel on Jumbo Mountain, Snohomish County, Washington, focused attention on this part of the Cascade Range, far more renowned for its timber than for its mineral resources. Hand specimens assaying as high as 13 pct Ni encouraged Discovery Mines Inc. of Mount Vernon, Wash., to stake 12 claims in Township 31 North, Range 9 East of the Willamette Meridian. The property was leased to Climax Molybdenum Co. in January 1957. Trenching, sampling, and geologic studies were carried out during the late summer of 1957 when most of the snow had disappeared. Although the deposits are only about four miles south of the logging town of Darrington and about two miles, as the crow flies, southeast of the end of a good gravel road from that town, all camp supplies and equipment were air-dropped, owing to the extremely rugged nature of the terrain.

At first sight this subject seems to belong to pure theoretical geology, but examination will soon show that it has important practical and economic interest to the mining engineer. The conclusion that all the northern portions of our country, as well as of the eastern continent, have, in the later periods of geological history, been covered with a thick bed of ice, is now accepted by geologists. This bed of ice, except in its greater magnitude, was like the modern glaciers of the Alps, and other mountains which extend above the line of perpetual snow. The marks it has left upon the surface show that it was comparatively thin on its southern edge, but that its thickness was much greater a little further north, and that it was several thousand feet thick at its kenviest parts. This variation of its surface would give it a descending slope towards the south, and cause the mass of ice, like a semifluid substance, to move in that direction,

The kinetics of the cyclic oxidation and reduction processes for palladium powder were examined in the temperature range 848 to 923 K. The changes in oxidation behavior due to cycling are shown to result from the decrease in surface area. Sintering is found to occur only during the reduction process. Oxidation kinetics were found to follow a cubic law with time and yield a relation for the oxidation rate constant of k x = (1.05) 106 exp P74.0). 103 / RT] The kinetics of reduction are demonstrated to be first-order with the rate constant described by the expression: kr = (7.69) 1012 exp [-(208.0) 103 / RT] . In both expressions R is in J.mo1-1.K-1.

Beyond the industrial suburbs of Melbourne to the southeast are brown coal deposits just under the fertile soil of the Latrobe Valley. These deposits rank as one of the wonders of the world. The manner in which this resource is put to use is one of the great engineering accomplishments of our time and also a prime example of Australian elan. The brown coal, with over 60% water content, occurs in beds from 200 to 400 ft thick, under 50 ft of cover. Fifty thousand tons of coal per day move in a nearly continuous stream from mining face to boilers. The power plants supply two thirds of the State of Victoria's requirements, about 800 megawatts. Surge capacity between mine and power plant is sufficient for 12 hr steaming time! Victorian brown coals have been known since the middle of the 19th century. However, it took a strike of bituminous coal miners in 1915 to bring brown coal permanently into the picture as a fuel for power generation. In Australia, power generation is a State function. The great development of brown coals has been under the State Electricity Commission of Victoria.

MODERN war means mechanization, and mechanization means raw materials, especially minerals-and lots of them. Let me recall a few events of recent history-events that constitute mile- stones down the road to the war now blazing on three continents and threatening to spread still farther. In 1932, Japan took Manchuria, largely upon the excuse that she needed raw materials; in 1935, Italy invaded Ethiopia, largely upon the excuse that Mussolini's growing nation needed raw materials-in this case oil; from 1933 to 1935, Germany cried out for a greater share of the world's natural wealth, and since 1938 has invaded or occupied ten other countries, frequently upon the excuse that she needed-and had a right to-more raw materials.

IN making a comparison of mine inspection methods in Europe and the United States, it is necessary to have some basis to start from, which makes this subject rather difficult, as such methods are governed largely by the authority given the inspector by the mining laws. In the United States there are 31 coal producing states and territories and 32 different mining laws under which inspectors operate, as one state-Pennsylvania-has both a bituminous and an anthracite code. Some of these codes are distinctly coal mining codes; others are essentially coal mining but apply also to other mines; several codes are sub-divided referring partly to coal mines and partly to other mines, and a few codes are mainly metal mining but apply in part to coal mining. Having all these different codes in the United States and the departments organized in a variety of different ways, there is of necessity a great difference in inspection methods in this country.

The quantities and destinations of the metallic ores and concentrates and partially or fully refined metals in international trade result from the interaction of many factors, of which geographic location is only one. How far the processes of concentration and refining are to be carried in the country in which the mining is done and what dictates the destinations to which the more or less completely processed raw materials will move are determined not only by present-day geologic, political, and economic conditions, but also by the patterns set up by these same conditions as they obtained in the past. The first generalization that can be made regarding trade in metal raw materials-one that affects the form in which the material is transported, rather than the patterns followed by that trade-is that concentration is carried out for all low grade ores, nonferrous or ferrous, in the country in which they originate. (Rule 1.) Economic considerations alone almost always require that this be done; only high grade iron, manganese, and chromite ores can be shipped as they are mined.

THE American copper mining industry is threatened with disintegration and destruction. This threat is not one which may only materialize in the distant future. The destruction has already commenced. At present, many domestic mines have already closed down. .Others are operating on a greatly curtailed basis. Those operating are doing so only at tremendous loss-because the selling price of copper is below the cost of production and rapidly diminishing financial resources and credit clearly forecast the early suspension of operations in most of the industry. Unemployment in the mining districts is increasing by leaps and bounds. While this condition is due in some measure to the present unsatisfactory state of business in general, the copper industry, unlike other lines of business, sees no possibility of recovery without definite aid. The fundamental, underlying cause of present conditions in the American copper mining industry is the unprecedented rise in foreign production, and the basic change which has taken place in the world copper industry in the last three years. The American industry had begun to feel this change early in 1929 long before the general collapse of business in the fall of that year. While the distress in the industry is undoubtedly aggravated by the present economic depression, it nevertheless would have arrived and. have been present at this time, regardless of general business conditions.

SIR HENRY CORT HAROLD CARPENTER, great-great-grandson of Henry Cort, famous as the initiator of iron puddling some 150 years ago, carries on the tradition of an illustrious name. Newest of those elected to the Institute's roster of Honorary Members, Sir Harold is distinguished for his achievements in the field of metallurgy as an investigator, teacher, administrator, organizer, and director of research. His interests in research have been in both the ferrous and non-ferrous fields. His name is particularly honored in its association with the establishment of fundamental con¬stants and of critical ranges of iron and iron alloys, and with original and fundamental studies of the preparation and properties of metal single crystals.

With the advent of the New Global Tectonics a coherent pattern of geology is emerging. To the economic geologist this is of vital concern because the type of mineralization in particular environments is predictable. Developments in geological reasoning now take their place beside developments in geochemistry and geophysics. Much is known of the worldwide geography of the Alpine orogenic period because it is now ending its 200 million years of existence, starting with the Jurassic, and we can see the mid-ocean rises and the down flow zones, and between them the stable oceanic and continental platforms. The concepts of mantle cells, the spreading sea floor, and continental drift have gained general acceptance. The oceanographers have demonstrated the uprises like that in the mid-Atlantic. In this paper it is suggested that down flows in the oceans are marked by island arcs, like the West Indies; and down flows in the continents are marked by orogens like the American Cordillera. The number and position of mantle cells is controversial: a total of about 16 cells is suggested in this paper. Certain cells expand, and as they carry continents with them give rise to concepts of plate tectonics. Specific types of mineral deposits are associated with the uprises, oceanic and continental platforms, and down flows. The uprises are accompanied by the currently described Red Sea and Salton Sea deposits, the oceanic parts of the platform have the nodular deposits, and the continental platforms have the post-tectonic deposits. However, most economic metal deposits are associated with the down flow zones in which the stage of geosynclinal development controls the type of deposit: (1) In the initial development stage the simatic upper mantle may be tapped and give rise to the volcanogenic massive base metal sulfide deposits and to the ophiolite suite which characteristically carries nickel, chrome, and cupreous pyrite. (2) In the early geosynclinal stage sialic crust is driven down into the simatic magma of the upper mantle and basic to acidic differentiates give rise to stocks accompanied by skarn and hydrothermal deposits. (3) The intermediate stage of geosynclinal development gives rise to tin-tungsten, lithium, and beryllium deposits as the magma chamber rises above the level of the upper mantle and there is no simatic component. (4) The late stage is one of regenerated deposits. The porphyry deposits are not restricted to stages but only by the time of generation of acid magma. As the geosynclinal system dies, the mantle is again the source of magma, giving rise to gabbro and diabase dykes and sills: in this last, post-tectonic, continental platform environment are found the Mississippi Valley type lead-zinc deposits, the Blind River and Witwatersrand type of sedimentary uranium and gold deposits, and also Sudbury's nickel. The key relationship of major ore deposits generated by downflows is depicted herein on a framework of uprises, platforms, and downflows in the Alpine orogenic period. There is evidence for nine orogenic periods, of which the Alpine period is the latest, having taken place from 3500 million years ago to the present. Each period was characterized by its own worldwide mantle cell system and associated uprises, platforms, and down flows. The cycle of geosynclinal development, including corresponding cycles of mineralization, can be precisely defined in relation to each of these orogenic periods. The development of the Alpine orogenic period therefore can be used as a guide to the study of the earlier orogenic periods which comprise well known periods: Kenoran, Hudsonian, Grenville, and Paleozoic; and less well known: Konkian, Aulian, Belomorian, and Elsonian [(Table 1)]. Each name is used for the period as a whole, and not for the main orogenic event.

Continental Oil Co. has spent more than four years of research on the fundamentals of recovery of potash by solution mining. This work included laboratory investigations of salt solution, brine flow, selective extraction of KC1 from sylvinite, and control of cavity geometry. Laboratory results were expanded by means of a series of field tests, and subjects such as well completion and hydraulic fracturing were added to the investigation. Both single-well and multiwell mining systems were studied in the field work. This paper discusses one field test in which potash was solution mined from a thin sylvinite ore zone in the Carlsbad Potash Basin. A two-well mining system was used for this test.

OF the forty or more excursions provided for the delegates to the World Engineering Congress at Tokyo, the trip to the Ashio copper mine stands out as one of the most enjoyable. In every detail looking to our comfort and pleasure the Furukawa company, our hosts, were admirable. This company operates five other copper mines, also gold and coal mines. Ashio is the largest with an annual production of about 14,000 tons of copper. It has been continuously worked since 1620, and doubtless was one of the sources of copper used in the gigantic statues of Buddha of many hundred years earlier date.

INTRODUCTION Detonations of high explosives in soil and rock have been used frequently in civil engineering applications. Of particular interest in recent years has been the development of test methods to simulate the desired blast and shock environments for the testing of protective structures. The United States Air Force, in particular, the Air Force Weapons Laboratory, in conjunction with the Defense Atomic Support Agency, has in recent years, developed special technology for simulation testing of protective structures in soil and rock media. Such a technology, although initially developed for military applications, is rapidly finding its way into civil applications. One of the major problems in the design of the simulation test is the correct prediction of ground motion induced by the detonation of high explosives. This paper presents a useful prediction method which is developed specifically for ground motion in rock that is induced by the detonation of a buried planar array of explosive columns (See Figure 1). The technique of simulating shock environment using such an array is called the Direct Induced High Explosive Simulation Tech- nique (DIHEST). Normally, each shot hole may contain canisters of ammonium nitrate positioned at various depths, or a slurry explosive with detonators positioned along its length (See Figure 1). The depth and width of the array, the spacing of shot holes, the spacing of detonators, the degree of containment, and the charge weight are the variables which govern the induced ground motion

Climax Molybdenum's plan for the Henderson 30,000 tpd molybdenite plant didn't just happen. It slowly evolved over a period of 3% years. Many plants cannot afford similar delays, but the Henderson project will take about 10 years to complete from the time the orebody was first discovered until production begins. Pilot plant testing results with both the single stage and two-stage semi-autogenous grinding circuits were highly favorable in terms of operating costs reduction-so much so, that the Amax subsidiary made the decision to go with semi-autogenous grinding for the Henderson mill.

Much has been said and written on the shortcomings of the open-flow and restricted potentials of oil wells to determine their relative ability to produce. The oil industry in general is agreed that the open-flow potential in particular is grossly inequitable, wasteful and expensive, but that potential is still used in many pools. This is partly because no thoroughly satisfactory substitute has been found and partly because operators are reluctant to adopt other methods that have been suggested; or, as Hamlet would say, we would rather "bear those ills we have than fly to others we know not of." In a great many pools the use of tubing potentials has been substituted for open-flow potentials, but open-flow potentials through casing are still being used in many pools, particularly. in Oklahoma, although the expense of such potentials has been pointed out many times. In one of the most recent pools in Oklahoma it is the practice to take open-flow potentials through the casing with the tubing out of the hole. The well is usually tubed after it is drilled in for the purpose of washing it in and cleaning the hole. After preliminary tests are run the tubing is pulled under pressure preparatory to taking the potential. After the potential is taken the tubing is rerun, under pressure. In order to accommodate the large capacity of the wells, it is customary to set three separators, six vent lines and large oil-storage tanks. It is conservatively estimated that the equipment not needed for producing the well currently but which is installed solely for the purpose of establishing large potentials costs the operator at least $5000 per well—approximately 35 per cent of the cost of equipping a well for production. Such needless expenditure constitutes an economic waste in addition to the gas that is wasted in taking potentials. Results of single-blow bit-tooth impact tests on saturated rocks under elevated confining pressures and zero pore pressure were reported in a previous publication.1 This paper presents an extension of the earlier work to include a study of crater formation during tooth impact on both gas- and liquid-saturated Berea and Bandera sandstones at elevated confining and pore pressures. The basic data obtained were force-time, displacement-time, velocity-time and force-displacement curves during crater formation. Crater volume was also measured and the mode of crater formation determined. Bit tooth geometry, depth of penetration and velocity of impact were held constant. Results indicate that, with pore fluid present in the rock, failure trends from brittle to ductile as pore pressure is increased at constant confining pressure (pore pressure and borehole pressure were equal) For a given rock type, the mode of crater formation was dependent not only upon the nominal effective stress, but also upon the fluid which saturated the rock pore space. When confining pressure and pore pressure were equal (zero nominal effective stress), bit-tooth impact resulted in brittle failure for nitrogen-saturated Berea, and brittle to transitional failure for nitrogen-saturated Bandera; when saturated with liquid both rocks failed in a ductile manner at zero nominal effective stress. INTRODUCTION Dynamic wedge penetration tests have been conducted by investigators in several fields, but the failure mechanism of rock under dynamic stresses is not understood completely. The complex action of drilling bits, even considering the action of a single tooth, may be considered as a combination of drag bit and rolling cutter action. Thus, as a first step in understanding rock breakage in oil well drilling, single chisel impact and rock planing are of fundamental importance. For example, Gray 2 and Crisp3 studied drag bit cutting action at brittle stress states. Simon4 and Hartman5 studied the reaction of rocks to vertical impact by means of drop tests. The depth of penetration, crater volume and force-vs-time curves during crater formation were observed. The significance of indexing single-bit impacts has been noted.4,6-8 Gamer et al,9 reported impact tests on impermeable Leuders limestone at atmospheric and elevated confining pressures. In all cases the tests were accomplished on dry rock and pore pressure was considered to be zero. The importance of both confining pressure and pore pressure on the failure characteristics of rock was described. 10-12 It was found that the yield strength and ductility of porous rock depend on the state of stress under which the sample is tested. The importance of pore pressure on drilling rate in microbit experiments was noted by Cumingham and Eenink. l3 Robinson 12 also pointed out that in drilling the most important parameter in rock failure is the effective stress, where effective suess is defined as confining pressure pc minus pore pressure pp. The effect of pore pressure and confining pressure on rock strength was also noted by Serdengecti and Boozer 14 in strain rate tests, and by Gardner, Wyllie and Droschackl5 in elastic wave studies. Until recently all reported wedge impact studies under simulated wellbore stress states have been conducted on dry rock. Maurer 16 reported impact tests on samples saturated with deaerated water. Borehole and formation fluid pressures were equal in these tests except when mud was used in the borehole. With mud in the borehole and a high borehole-to-formation fluid pressure differential. Maurer observed "pseudoplastic" crater formation. Podio and Grayl reported impact tests on Berea and Bandera sandstone saturated with pore fluids having wide ranges in viscosities. This paper is not intended as a scientific discussion of the combustion of oil but is written from the standpoint of an operator who has the experience and qualifications necessary to guide others in producing the most economical results in the use of liquid fuels. Oil, in this paper, usually means petroleum or its products but incidental reference is made to other liquid and gaseous fuels, so that the term may be considered as referring to all liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons in comparison with solid fuels, as coal and wood. However, only a few of the principal factors in the use of oil as a fuel can be given. The present, and prospective, high price of coal is causing users of fuel to renew inquiry as to the merits of other forms of fuel for industrial purposes. Crude oil (petroleum) is proving to be one of the world's most valuable mineral resources. The recent discovery that oil underlies a considerable area of the United States, Mexico, and other parts of the world to a greater extent than was formerly believed and the large production of some of the wells in these areas shows the probable quantity of fuel oil that may now be available. Through the energy of Lord Cowdrey, who was one of the pioneers of the oil industry in Mexico, oil has been discovered in England; some prominent geologists believe that it may be found in quantity in Great Britain. For years, oil has been known to be of great value in the manufneture of metals. It has proved incomparable in forge shops, steel foundries, heat-treating furnaces, and wherever accuracy of temperatures is essential, or where a maximum output is desired as well as quality of metal. In some types of equipment, the output produced with oil as fuel is double that obtained with coal and at a reduction of 50 per cent. in the cost of the fuel. For example, in drop-forging plants, the metal is always waiting for the man when oil is used as fuel, whereas with coal, the man must wait for the metal to become sufficiently heated. It has only been since January, 1919, that the oil supply could be relied on for boiler service, owing to the war conditions and the inability to get oil tankers for the delivery of the oil from Mexico to Atlantic ports; but now a constant supply is assured, and many manufacturers are installing it in their power plants. By hydrometamorphism is meant the alteration of rocks, ores and minerals by atmospheric waters. In its broadest sense, it includes the varied processes of weathering, oxidation, hydration, the leaching of rocks and ores, and the solution, migration and enrichment of metals. Rain water, as it strikes the earth, is practically pure water, except for small quantities of dissolved atmospheric gases; upon coming in contact with ore minerals, especially sulphides, however, it is transformed into solutions of great chemical activity, which attack, transform and rearrange the minerals of ore- bodies, and so effect enrichments of the greatest economic importance. Primary deposits so low in grade as to be without commercial value are frequently thus transformed into deposits of commercial importance. It is necessary in the examination of any orebody, therefore, to determine whether the valuable ore is of primary or of secondary origin; if primary, its value may be expected to continue indefinitely in depth to the zone of primary impoverishment; if secondary, the ore deposition is known to be controlled by surface agencies, and the valuable ore may be expected to continue to such depths only as have been reached by surface waters. The decomposition and weathering of rocks, unlike the changes undergone by orebodies, are accomplished by water carrying as dissolved constituents chiefly atmospheric oxygen and carbon dioxide, together with vegetable acids. The chemical changes wrought are principally hydration, oxidation and the formation of carbonates. The tendency is toward the solution of the more easily dissolved minerals, which is attended by the formation and a surface concentration of the more resistant minerals,

How do you make a mine out of 500 000 kg (1.1 million lb) of uranium oxide contained in a low-grade deposit with high clay content? Confronted with these limited reserves and mineralogical problems at France's St. Pierre du Cantal uranium deposit, engineers adopted a rather unusual mill process to keep capital costs to a minimum. Crushing and grinding were eliminated by using a high pressure monitor to slurry ore directly from stockpiles. After mechanical separation of the high-grade fines from low-grade sand, the sand fraction is washed of clay to increase permeability and then it is heap leached. Fines are sent to agitated vessels for acid leaching, and the pulp from this operation is diluted by pregnant solution from the heap leaching.
