In taking up this subject it is first necessary to define our terms. Efficiency, in its engineering usage, means the ratio between actual and theoretical results, and efficiency-records thus involve the use of scientifically determined standards with which all results are compared. Scientific management is the methods used in increasing efficiency, and includes the use of efficiency-records. Efficiencj-records do not alone constitute scientific management, but they are necessary to it, and any so-called system of management which is not based upon standards and standardization is fundamentally wrong. An efficient management and efficiency-methods in management are not the same thing. There are some people who have an instinctive genius for management and accomplish results without exactly knowing how they do it. Such a manager may obtain a very high efficiency without the aid of scientifically determined standards. On the other hand, it sometimes happens that poor results will accompany the use of efficiency-recorcis, due to a weak or indifferent management, which fails to make use of the information acquired. Efficiency-records are only a tool, and like other tools are worthless unless used. The ordinary cost-sheet and production-statement do not go far enough. They tell what has been done, but give no information as to how well it has been done. It is true that the man who is familiar with the industry and the plant in question may draw inferences and form a general idea of good work or bad work, but it can only be a very general and hazy idea. Comparisons with previous records or records of other plants are unsatisfactory, since there is nothing to show the cause of the differences. Efficiency-records supply this need. They compare actual

The conversion plant of the Clirnax Molybdenum Co. is at Langeloth, Washington . County, Pennsylvania, approximately 30 miles west of Pittsburgh. The molybdenite concentrates converted originate in the company's mine and mill at Climax, Co1orado.l They are delivered to the Langeloth plant by rail packed in 175-lb. bags. War production of concentrates at the mill started in 1918 but it was not until about 1920 that any peacetime uses of the metal began to develop. Early conversion of Climax concentrates was mainly into ferromolybden um, produced for the company by a custom smelter. Chronology of Plant Development In 1924 a small hand-rabbled roaster was built at Langeloth, the roasted concentrates being used principally in the production of calcium molybdate by a conventional wet method. The size of the original plant is indicated by the fact that during 1925 about 400,000 lb. of molybdenum was converted. In 1925-1926, a multiple-hearth roaster was erected (12-ft. 0.d. 8-hearth Nichols-Herreshoff); also the first experimental ferromolybdenum was produced at Langeloth. At this time sa.1cium molybdate was produced in the furnace by a process to be described. With continued interest in and increased use of molybdenum, it was necessary to arrange for enlargement of plant facilities. Although only one 12-hearth 16-ft. 0.d. roaster was erected at this time (1929), plans were prepared for a duplicate unit, which was completed in 193 5, giving a potential roasting capacity of some 16,000 lb. Mo per day under the then prevailing roasting practice. Shortly after this second unit had gone into production, increased demand overtaxed the plant, and as a result two 12-hearth 18-ft. 0.d. roasters were placed in operation in 1936 and 1937. This gave the plant a potential roasting capacity of 40,000 to 50,000 lb. Mo per day, and necessitated major changes in auxiliary handling equipment as well as improved facilities for producing ferromolybdenum. Following the introduction (1938) of a new product—molybdic oxide briquets— and because of the constantly growing demand for molybdenum, plant facilities were again enlarged in 1940 and 1941 by the erection of two 16-hearth 18-ft. 0.d. roasters. These two new units, along with a change in roasting practice, brought the potential roasting capacity to 150,ooo to 190,000 Ib. Mo per day, based on about 15 lb. per sq. ft. of hearth area. Other departments of the plant have necessarily grown, until today the plant is modern throughout and completely mechanized, with equipment geared to produce marketable products as follows:

A second-order approximation to the exact solution of the diffusivity equation corresponding to the pressure build-up of a well producing at a variable rate is derived. This approximation is applicable when the well's shut-in time is larger than the total time elapsed since the well was first produced. The resulting equations are compact in form and easy to use. Thus, the need for Horner's' theoretically precise but rather laborious solution to the above problem is eliminated. In addition, these equations apply where the use of Horner's widely known approximate method is questionable. From a practical point of view, the reported method is best suited for analysis of drill-stem tests and short production tests conducted on new wells. INTRODUCTION The utility of drill-stem and short production tests in reservoir studies has long been recognized by the reservoir engineer. If interpreted correctly they could lead to a wealth of information upon which may depend the success or failure of reservoirs' analyses. Initial reservoir pressure and the average flow capacity are two quantities that are normally sought from a drill-stem and/or a short production test analysis. Pressures are the most valuable and useful data in reservoir engineering. Directly or indirectly, they enter into all phases of reservoir engineering calculations. Therefore, their accurate determination is of utmost importance. The flow capacity kh of the reservoir is indicative of its commercial capability. In addition, it can indicate the presence of a darnaged zone around the wellbore and, thus, the necessity for remedial measures. Of the several methods used to analyze drill-stem and short production tests, Horner's' method is by and large the most common. It applies to an infinite reservoir and or a limited reservoir where the effect of production has not been felt by the boundary. Horner's method makes use of the so-called "point-source" solution of the diffusivity equation. The point-source solution is approximated by a logarithmic function and the superposition theorem is utilized to give the familiar pressure build-up equation where is the shut-in time, q is in reservoir barrels per day and the rest of the symbols conform with AIME nomenclature. Eq. 1 was derived for a well which produced at a constant rate q from time zero to time t and was then shut in. In actuality, such a constant rate of production does not normally obtain. Therefore, a correction must be applied to Eq. 1 to account for the varying rates of production. Horner suggested two methods. The first, which results in a theoretically accurate solution, is rather lengthy and laborious and, thus, it is not suited for routine analysis. The second which has been termed a "good working approximation" is the one used by the majority of the reservoir engineers. In the second method, Eq. 1 is modified by simply introducing a corrected time t, and writing where q is the last established production rate prior to shut-in, and t, is obtained by dividing the total cumulative production by the last established rate. Horner's original paper does not give any indication that this method of correction is based on any theoretical justification. In addition, there is a question as to what constitutes the last established rate. In case of a drill-stem test some engineers use the average rate obtained by dividing the total fluid produced by the total flow time, while others calculate the average rate by dividing the total fluid produced by the last flow-period time. Obviously, different results obtain for the different flow rates used. Because of this, a simple method to the varying-rate case was developed which is theoretically sound and which defines clearly the flow rate and its associated time to be used in the calculations. The final equation arrived at is where q* and t* are a modified rate and time, respectively, and can be easily calculated. In addition, it is shown theoretically that Horner's approximate method, if used for a variable-rate case, gives the correct pressure but would not be expected to give the correct flow capacity. An experimental method is described to compare strain data for rock and rock bolts when exposed to shock waves released by blastings. Static and dynamic strains were measured. Bolt gage response indicated a static decay of the bolt anchorage coupled with a reaction due to blasting vibrations. A distinct loss of bolt tension was indicated during vibrations and this was accompanied by a smaller but steady loss of tension due to static loading. The strain losses were found to relate to the shock source distance and the vibrational amplitude in the rock and bolts. Millions of roof bolts are used each year to stabilize mine openings and prevent their failure. Frequently, bolts become loose and lose their effectiveness as reinforcement to the mine structure. Many attempts have been made to determine the cause of loosening, including observation of the bolt tension or bolt torque through the use of torque wrenches, compression pads, and load cells. Pull tests have been used extensively to determine anchorage characteristics.102 These investigations have shown that even when bolts are loaded below the nominal anchorage capacity of the rock under 'static' conditions they exhibit a decay of load through adjustments and slippage at the bolt anchor. Since bolts are quite often found with the plate hanging loose from the rock surface, this condition suggests that some additional mechanism may have played a part in loosening the anchorage. Vibration from blasting or shock loading have been suggested as one cause in this type of anchorage deterioration. This paper gives the results of an investigation carried on at the University of Missouri at Rolla to determine the influence of shock waves on rock-bolt anchorage stability. ROCK BOLT ANCHORAGE UNDER DYNAMIC LOADING CONDITIONS In this report dynamic loading conditions are defined as conditions under which rock and bolts are exposed to vibrations occurring as a consequence of blasting, machine vibrations, earthquakes, rock bursts, etc. Whatever the location of the shock source, the waves created suffer extensive alterations along their travel paths, depending upon the vibrational properties and geometric parameters of the transmitting media. Together with reflection, refraction and diffraction at material boundaries, waves suffer changes in their nature to form tensile, compressive and shear waves. They become polarized, retracted, accelerated, dispersed, so that the waves incident at a point in the material can be the result of either one or a combination of this wide range of processes. A certain fraction of the wave energy will be lost due to friction, deformation, and material failure at the anchor-rock contact. Thus, the physical nature of wave propagation is such that it inhibits an exact analytical solution. For this reason this investigation should be considered qualitative rather than quantitative even though numerical data have been used as a base. CONCEPT OF THE INVESTIGATION Experiments were designed to find, from a series of rock bolts installed in natural mine rock, whether or not, and to what extent, bolt tensions would be influenced when bolts were exposed repeatedly to shock waves such as those produced by blasting. Electronic instrumentation available in the rock mechanics laboratory of the University of Missouri at Rolla was used to observe wave development in the rock and vibrational reactions in the bolts. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Fig. 1 illustrates schematically the experimental equipment. Electric resistance wire strain gages were used as sensors for the strain response of the rock and the bolts. Bolts were 5 ft long and 5/8 in. in diam, equipped with two-leaf type expansion shells for 1 3/8 in. boreholes. The bolt gages were mounted by use of Du Pont Household Cement, covered with an epoxy insulation and then enclosed in a copper foil for electronic shielding. For details of placement and the wiring diagram see Fig. 2 and 3. The output of both the rock gages and the bolt gages was fed into cathode ray oscilloscopes from which the vibrational traces could be photographed. A static strain indicator was also used to read the output of all gages.

A modification of Le Claire's microscopic model for self-diffusion is developed in a form suitable for prediction of activation energies for diffusion in disordered substitutional solutions as well as in pure metals Bonding is considered as a localized interaction, and the energy of bonding between atoms of different types is taken as the arithmetic mean of the energies in the pure elements. The activation energies for vacancy formation and migration in substitutional alloys are shown to depend on the empirical constants developed for self-diffusion when the equations are adjusted for the mole fractions of the two elements. The differences in activation energies between alloys and pure metals are calculated and compared with the experimental differences. MaNY different correlations have been proposed for use in predicting activation energies for self-diffusion or diffusion in dilute alloys. Usually theories for self-diffusion cannot be applied to alloys nor can theories for dilute alloys be satisfactorily adapted to self-diffusion. We present here a correlation scheme which can approximate activation energies for diffusion, vacancy formation, and atom migration in substitutional-alloy systems of any concentration. The activation energy for self-diffusion QD has been correlated to the melting temperature Tm,1, 2 the sublimation energy L,,l the heat of fusion Lf,3 crystal structure, and valence.4 Working with mechanical parameters Le claire5 proposed that the activation energy for vacancy migration Qm could be related to appropriate shear moduli. He also proposed that the activation energy for vacancy formation 62, is proportional to Ls. THEORY We consider that Le Claire's expression for 4, is satisfactory. But an alternate expression for Qm in terms of the bulk modulus is just as satisfactory from a theoretical point of view for the prediction of the energy of vacancy migration in pure metals and can more easily be used for alloys. In order for Qm to be a minimum, not only the moving atom but also adjacent and nearby atoms must undergo distortions. These distortions are neither isotropic as is implied by a correlation with the bulk modulus nor unidirectional as implied by a correlation with a shear modulus, but are complex and multidirectional. A complete analysis in terms of the bulk modulus and all the shear moduli is not yet available. In a first approximation in which only one parameter is used, there is no obvious theoretical reason to prefer the shear modulus over the bulk modulus. The bulk modulus is a much more convenient parameter for use in predicting Qm. Shear moduli are known for less than half of the metallic elements while bulk moduli are usually available. Furthermore, because of the directional dependence of shear moduli, their estimation for alloys appears inherently more difficult than is the estimation of bulk moduli. We assume that the bulk modulus Bs reflects an average value of the shear moduli such that the strain energy at the point of maximum distortion of the lattice during vacancy migration can be expressed as

His relatives insisted that the name should be "Geophysical Prospecting," "Geophysical Exploration" or "Exploratory Geophysics"; though the youngster has grown up by now, this battle is still going on. His father did not think the child would amount to much until he began to show some unexpected talents, which were acquired, no doubt, from his mother Physics. His progress caused his father no little worry, and he began to wonder whether his offspring would help him in his business when he grew up or would set up shop in competition with the old man. His aunt Petroleum watched his growth with benevolent interest; his uncle Mining remained rather skeptical and cousin Civil Engineering not only assumed the attitude of the man from Missouri but was not much convinced even after he had been shown. Making a long story short, the kid decided that he had to stand on his own feet and get along as best he could. Having come from a good family he possessed some outstanding characteristics such as resourcefulness and a reasonable amount of business ability. He therefore decided that it would be to his advantage to follow in his father's and mother's footsteps as much as possible, and develop the good qualities of both. As a result, the youngster did fairly well for himself, and his relatives decided that it might be to their advantage to be on better terms with him. Father Geology had come to the conclusion that the boy could be very helpful to him and now wanted him to live in his house. The bituminous coal industry faces a real problem, if it desires to retain the position in the power-generation field to which it is economi-cally entitled. More power is probably produced today for electrical energy, for steam-driven and steam-heating industries and processes, for transportation by rail, water, highway and air, collectively, than ever before, and yet the total bituminous coal production has decreased about 38 per cent, from 575,000,000 tons in 1926 to 357,500,000 tons in 1934. It is not the intention of the writer to recommend coal as a fuel for automobiles and airplanes, but rather to point to these forms of transpor-tation as being responsible in a very measurable degree for reducing the coal consumed by railroads. Petroleum products may still further reduce consumption of locomotive fuel through the extension of the use of Diesel-driven trains. Oil-burning steam-driven locomotives are replacing coal in some places, where railroads operating high-speed pas-senger trains are willing, temporarily at least, to pay a premium for the fuel, that is low in ash and produces less smoke and practically no cinders. In the navy and ocean-going passenger ships, oil is so firmly estab-lished, and has such definite advantages over coal as formerly fired, in steaming radius, in ease of bunkering, cleanliness, and reduction in firing labor, that very outstanding developments in the handling and burning of coal will be required in order to replace oil. For freighters on the Great Lakes, coal is the logical fuel, but there is great and immediate need of radical improvements in its use, else that market also may be lessened. It is not within the scope of this paper to discuss in detail bitumi-nous coal for either locomotive or marine use, but, rather, generation of power in stationary plants, consisting of electrical generating stations and that very large group of miscellaneous industrial plants, such as paper, rubber, textile, steel and other industries that use electrical, mechanical, and steam power, derived from either hydro or some form of fuel.

Since 1970 a new series of pneumo-mechanical flotation machines has been developed by Outokumpu Oy. The cells have a completely new type of mechanism based on a recently-developed theory of conditions necessary for dispersion of large amounts of air. The mechanism was developed in 3 cu m cells and scaled to 16 cu m cells. Rotor and stator description, scale-up theory, and practical experience with the 16 cu m cell are presented.

OUR interest in the matter of pyrometers and pyrometry is primarily that of a user of considerable quantities of heat-measuring equipment; and while we play be somewhat critical on the subject we have aimed to make the nature of these comments constructive. The glass industry in America dates back to 1609, when Capt. John Smith started a small glass plant near Jamestown, Va., with a few Italian workmen, to manufacture glass beads for trading with the Indians. While the industry has expanded until it has reached a volume of over $200,000,000 per annum, the means of heat determination in Colonial days was the human eye, and in much of the industry the same means is used today. About 15 yr. ago the largest glass-house supply dealers began to sell platinum pyrometers, but as nearly all of these proved un-satisfactory, pyrometers met a temporary rebuff from the old-time glass manufacturers. As their ruggedness of construction, reliability, and stability have been improved, however, pyrometers have gradually won their way into more and more extensive use throughout the glass trade. But there are still many applications where pyrometers are not used, largely because of cost and upkeep considerations. There are two distinct fields in glass works for pyrometry. The first calls for accurate temperature measurement and the second only demands knowledge of relative comparative fluctuations of temperature, to know whether the work is becoming hotter or colder. For example, in a lehr for annealing glassware and removing strain we want accurate temperatures to know that the ware is heated to the critical temperature for rapid removal of strain. On the other hand, in a glass pot furnace nearly 120 ft. (36 m.) in circumference, where the pyrometer couples only project inside the furnace wall for less than 2 in. (50 mm.), it is inconceivable that these few inches represent the accurate temperature at every point of the 120-ft. circumference but the relative readings as to whether the pyrometer shows schedule temperature fluctuations are valuable indications for control. In all metallurgical processes and mining operations, water is an element which receives attention from the management; and provision is required either for a means of supply, or for the disposal of accumulation. In many works the quantity of water to be furnished is sufficiently large to place the item of water supply of equal importance to the reception of material or disposition of product; and the means to be employed receive, or should receive, the most careful investigation. There are exceptional cases where mines or quarries possess a natural drainage, but a large majority of the useful ores and the fuels delved from the earth are obtained from workings in which water accumulates and .must be removed. 6.1-1. Introduction. Of necessity, the first of the unit operations conducted during the exploitation phase in surface mining is production drilling. It precedes blasting, with which it is associated as the two unit operations employed to break or fragment consolidated material (usually rock) in place. The purpose of production drilling is to provide the cavity for placement of the explosives. So far, no alternative to blasting has been devised for fragmenting very resistant rock in situ, although some forms of excavation (ripping, bucket wheel) are suitable without prior blasting for softer rock, such as weathered shale or mudstone, decomposed sediments, etc. For the vast majority of surface mines, however, drilling and blasting are pre- requisite to excavation and essential to the production cycle. Drilling is also used in surface mining for purposes other than providing blastholes. It finds application during exploration for obtaining samples and during development for drainage, slope stability, foundation testing, etc. Only in the exploitation phase of surface mining, however, are unique or specialized drilling methods and equipment employed; and the discussion in this Section is directed primarily to that application of drilling. Drilling is the most common means of rock penetration, the operation of placing a directed hole in rock. Closely akin to drilling for exploitation purposes is the cutting or freeing of dimension stone in quarrying. This operation, usually termed channeling or sawing, also takes the form of directional penetration of rock; but instead of producing a cylindrical hole, it yields a kerf or cut. The material thus freed from the solid is both a shaped and sized product, an objective of vital importance in the dimension stone industry. In sawing, holes are sometimes drilled to insert tools, but this drilling is a minor part of the sawing operation and employs conventional methods. Cutting, as a unit operation for freeing stone in quarrying, may be considered equivalent in purpose to drilling and blasting in other forms of surface mining.

Experimental data are presented for hydrate formation conditions for mixtures of hydrogen sulfide and methane. Vapor-solid equilibrium constants for hydrogen sulfide are also presented. Equilibrium constants, defined here as the ratio of the mole fraction of hydrogen sulfide in the vapor phase (dry basis) to the mole fraction of hydrogen sulfide in the solid phase (dry basis), were calculated using the vapor-solid equilibrium constants for methane presented in an earlier paper. The conditions at which a natural gas will form gas hydrates with water may be computed from its composition, when hydrogen sulfide is present in addition to carbon dioxide and the paraffin hydrocarbons. INTRODUCTION Many gases are known to form solid hydrates in the presence of liquid water at temperatures above 32°F. This hydrate formation is of importance to the natural gas industry inasmuch as most of the constituents found in natural gases will form hydrates. The attention of the industry was called to hydrates by Hammer-schmidtl0 in 1934. A number of papers have been written giving the temperatures and pressures at which these hydrates will form3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,13,14,15,18,19 and a bibliography on the subject has been compiled13. Deaton and Frost4,5,6,7,8 report work for various pure gases and for some natural gases. Katz and co-workers3,4,13,14,18,19 have reported data for various gases at high pressure. They developed a method of predicting conditions for hydrate formation from equilibrium constants3,19 and from gab gravity." The effects of anti-freeze agents on the formation of hydrogen sulfide hydrate were reported by Bond and Nelson.' The hydrogen sulfide-water system, including hydrate, has been the subject of recent investigation by Sage and co-workers." Mixtures of hydrates behave as solid solutions and an equilibrium exists between the vapor phase and the solid phase that appears to be comparable to the equilibrium between vapor and liquid phases.3,10 By means of the vapor-solid equilibrium constants which have been published for methane, ethane, propane, iso-butane, and carbon dioxidel6 it is possible to determine the temperature and pressure at which hydrates will form for a specific gas mixture when water is present. Hydrogen sulfide which is frequently found in natural gases has a very strong tendency to form hydrate and must enter the solid solution when present in a natural gas forming a hydrate. To determine the effect of hydrogen sulfide when computing the conditions for gas hydrate formation, it is necessary to have the equilibrium constant giving the ratio of the concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the gas phase to the concentration in the solid phase. This paper presents data on hydrate formation for mixtures of hydrogen sulfide and methane and presents the equilibrium constants which were calculated from these data. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The apparatus used to determine the conditions of hydrate formation for the methane-hydrogen sulfide system was similar to that employed by previous investigators.3,18,19 A charge gas cylinder was used to supply the hydrogen sulfide-methane mixtures, called the charge gas, and to supply the pressure up to 1.000 psia. THAT colleges and technical schools constitute a vital factor in our industrial system is being realized more and more of late years. Consequently it is desirable that there should be a constant interchange of ideas between the 'school and the industries and that there should be a more intimate contact between the student and his future employer. Business and industry demand certain proficiencies and qualifications of the student and he, in turn, sees certain rewards and advantages in the industry. . In a meeting of this kind, whose primary purpose is to promote a greater intimacy between the students and those men who are active in the mining profession, it is quite fitting that each state his demnds upon the other in order to establish a common understanding. It is my desire to call attention to a new industry which was started about four years ago, through the discovery by Mr. John Holland, a resident of this city, of the methods employed in working the metal iridium. This metal has been known since the year 1803, having been discovered by Smithson Tennant while investigating the metallic residue which remained when platinum ores were dissolved in aqua regia. The metal is classed among the rare metals, as it is not found in large quantities, although it is quite widely distributed geographically. It is found in California, Oregon, Russia, East India, Borneo, South America, Canada, Australia, and in certain parts of France, Germany, and Spain. The principal sources of supply of the metal are Russia and California; it is nearly always found with either platinum or gold, is extracted from those ores as a by-product, and is always found in small grains or fine powder, the largest pieces being about the size of a grain of rice. In nature it is generally alloyed with other metals, and the two metals with which it is most commonly alloyed are platinum and osmium; the platinum alloy is called platin-iridium, and the osmium alloy osmiridium, or iridosmine. IN applied mechanics and in metallurgy the transition from elastic to inelastic action is a matter of considerable interest and importance. Often the first inelastic deformation is apparently quite homogeneous; that is, uniformly distributed throughout the specimen. Sometimes this deformation is heterogeneous; that is, localized; inelastic deformation proceeds to some definite amount in restricted regions before adjacent regions of the specimen are inelastically deformed. In such cases the deformation does not become homogeneous until the whole specimen has been deformed the amount corresponding to that for each localized deformation. If the test is stopped before uniform extension sets in, the heterogeneous character of the deformation is apparent on the surface of the specimen through characteristic markings, which have been called "Lüders"' lines, "Hartmann's" lines, the "Piobert effect," or simply "flow figures." These markings are the source of considerable trouble in fabricating operations, particularly in the deep drawing of steel sheet. In many cases where the transition is of this nature, the stress developed at the upper limit of the elastic range is greater than the stress during the period of heterogeneous deformation, giving rise to the familiar "drop of the beam" effect in testing. The amount of the yield-point elongation, as well as the value of the stress at the lower yield point (the value to which the stress drops when yielding begins), are functions of the temperature and the testing speed. Lower temperatures and faster rates of testing increase both the yield-point elongation and the yield-point stress. These matters have been ably discussed in a recent paper by Winlock and Leiter1 though, as brought out by the discussion of that paper, the phenomena are but little understood. The purpose of the present paper is to clarify the problem through the application of a simple principle, and to show that, through the application of this principle, a number of phenomena in the plastic deformation of metals become more readily understood. An isothermal calorimeter suitable for measurements of heats of solution in liquid tin as solvent is described. Measurements of the heats of solution of gold, silver, copper, and a gold-silver alloy are reported. The heat of formation of this gold-silver alloy is also reported. HEATS of solution in liquids can be determined directly, but few such data have been published for metals as solvents. Knowledge of heats of solution is desirable because it contributes to the general understanding of energy relations in metallic solutions. Thermochemical measurements of this type also furnish answers to specific problems: For example, from the heats of solution of an alloy and of a mixture of its constituent elements in a given solvent, the heat of formation of the alloy may be found. Similarly, differences in the energy content of samples of the same metal in two different states, such as the annealed and cold worked states, may be determined. In the work reported here, gold, silver, and an alloy of gold and silver were dissolved in liquid tin at 240°C and gold, silver, and copper were dissolved in tin at 300 °C. The experiments yielded the heats of solution of these metals in tin. The heat of formation of the gold-silver alloy was also determined. The same calorimetric method is being used to measure the energy stored in metals during cold working and preliminary results have been published.' Equipment and Experimental Procedure The isothermal calorimeter used in this work, Fig. 1, consisted of a Dewar flask completely immersed in a constant-temperature salt bath. A long neck provided space for thermocouple leads and a stirrer shaft and permitted the injection of solute samples. The metal bath in the calorimeter flask was stirred at about 100 rpm by a small glass impeller driven by a constant-speed motor. The shaft of the stirrer passed through a Wilson vacuum seal.2 All measurements were made under vacuum in order to eliminate temperature disturbances resulting from gas convection and to prevent the oxidation of tin. The calorimeter flask was joined by an all-glass connecting line to a gas-control system which made possible the use of a protective atmosphere of deoxidized and dried hydrogen. At the operating temperature of the calorimeter tin oxide was not reduced by hydrogen, presumably because the reaction rate was too slow. Part of the closed system was a removable side tube through which the solute sample could be introduced and in which it was held at a temperature of 0°C prior to injection into the metal bath.
