The Aspen Mining District is situated at the eastern edge of the system of stratified rocks of western Colorado, where this edge meets the ridge of metamorphic granite which divides the State into two unequal parts. In following the valley of the Roaring Fork westward from the continental divide towards Aspen, one passes through a country of granite and gneiss, with no sedimentary rocks until the town is nearly reached. At this point the Cambrian quartzites first make their appearance, lying on the granites, with a dip of from 30' to 45 to the northwest. Beyond these quartzites and conformably upon them lie dolomites, limestones, shales, porphyries and sandstones, gradually flattening in general dip as one proceeds westward, but much disturbed by local foldings and faultings.

Abstract-A borehole sonde wing a 252Cf neutron source and a Ge(Li) gamma-ray detector was field tested in a coal bed in Belmont County, Ohio, to ascertain whether such a device could be useful as a coal-exploration tool. As the sonde was lowered into the borehole, successive spectra were accumulated over short time intervals. The intensities of the capture gamma rays from hydrogen and of decay gamma rays from aluminum were determined simultaneously in each spectrum. A log of the intensities versus depth shows the depth and thickness of the coal bed.

In the writer's opinion, more stress should be put on field and microscope observations, as J. L. Gillson does. His discovery of relics of big labradorite feldspars from the Marcy anorthosite in all the other rocks is proof enough that previous field observations have been inadequate. The writer's field experience with anorthositic massifs is limited to the Egersund-Sogndal district in southern Norway; however, this is a very large and well exposed area. It seems to have so many points in common with the Adirondack region that a detailed comparison should be beneficial. This comparison was not possible 20 years ago, owing to the scarcity of geological data, at least for Norway. Both regions are now far better known-the Norway district because of the work of Professors Bugge and Barth33-35 and especially because of the extensive field and microscopic research of P. Michot,36-46 who introduced me in the field to the problems of that region.

Beryl is a mineral that may be difficult to distinguish from quartz by casual field inspection. The easily recognized green color and hexagonal crystal form of coarse-grained beryl are by no means universal, even in beryl from pegmatitic deposits. If it occurred as a fine-grained accessory mineral in an igneous rock, it would almost certainly escape detection unless samples were submitted for petrographic or chemical analysis. There may be substantial deposits of some beryllium mineral, other than beryl, that has been overlooked because that mineral also closely resembles the common rock-forming minerals. A reliable and simple method of identifying beryllium minerals and determining the beryllium content of a rock would be helpful in exploration. This article describes preliminary experiments in applying nuclear reaction to the qualitative identification of beryl and to the semiquantitative determination of the beryllium content of rock samples.

THE phenomenon of diffusion, according to the most prevalent conceptions at the present time, undoubtedly played an important part in the formation and distribution of metals and minerals in the earth's crust. Apparently there is good evidence that in the geological rate of cooling diffusion caused numerous materials to separate into individual masses or into duplex structures. As is well known, the early steels were made by cementation; that is, by heating wrought ferrous metal in contact with carburizing materials so as to produce a relatively high carbon content on the surface. If the process was continued long enough, the carbon diffused throughout the piece. A more homogeneous product depended upon further heating and forging, so that the carbon diffused to a fairly uniform concentration throughout the metal. In the modern metallurgical industry, diffusion is the basis for many operations; for example, the production of hard surfaces oil steels by carburizing, nitriding, cementing with chromium, silicon, boron and beryllium. Castings or ingots as they solidify do not have homogeneous structures, but these structures are made largely homogeneous by suitable process of heat-treating and the resulting diffusion. It is in modern physical metallurgy, however, that we become greatly concerned about the mechanism of the phenomenon of diffusion. The rates of diffusion, effect of temperature and time on diffusion, and the relation of diffusion to the many properties of the parent metal and the diffusing metal have become important; also, we are concerned with the diffusion of a single metal into a complex alloy. For example, what is the mechanism whereby carbon and nitrogen travel into steel? What is the effect of alloying elements in the ferrous material on the rates of diffu-sions? What is the effect of simultaneous diffusion of carbon and nitro-gen? How does chromium, beryllium, boron, or the like, diffuse into the steel, and what are the effects of alloying elements in the steel previous to the cementation process? The effect of increasing ionic strength, via monovalent and divalent ions, on alkyl sulfate flotation of hematite and quartz war investigated. The effects of collector chain length and pretreatment on this flotation were also studied. Sodium hexadecyl sulfate was shown to be a superior flotation collector to sodium dodecyl sulfate for recovery of hematite when there was no salt addition. Similar observation were made when sodium sulfate or sodium chloride was used to control ionic strength. Sodium dodecyl sulfate floated hematite better than its longer chutited counterpart under conditions of low pretreatment temperature and increasing calcium chloride concentration. The flotation recovery for all salt containing pulps was almost always improved after preboiling. Most of the results obtained when the pretreatment temperature was raised were attributed to increased solubility of the collector.

The three gas-producing "pools" discussed in this paper are in Sweet-water County, southwest Wyoming, and Moffat, County, northwest Colorado. Hiawatha, North Baxter Basin and South Baxter Basin gas fields became economically important in 1929 when a 330-mile gas line connected them with Salt Lake City, Ogden and towns en route. The mining and other industries have grown and changed with- respect to their requirements for slurry pumps capable of handling high percentages of abrasive materials. Greater solids concentration, higher heads and pressures, and increased flow arc not possible. Today's equipment delivers up to three times the flow-tonnage and 1.3 times the head per stage as compared with pumps of ten years ago. This results in four times the requirement in size and energy. The new centrifugal pumps are capable of handling these requirements at pressures up to 4826 kPa (700 psi), with 6895 kPa (1000 psi) or more being considered for future systems. The latest pumps, functioning at four times the operating requirement on flow-head, weight eight times more than the previous equipment. Efficiency is increased slightly, to about 75 % to 85%. A testing program on equivalent units has confirmed that the added strength and specific design of heavy-duty pumps can meet demanding engineering objectives. Operating life on difficult-to-pump materials is increased from 500 to over 5000 hours of continuous operation; the ten-fold increase in pump operating time is a major design objective.

The work described in this paper is sponsored by the Bureau of Mines for the purpose of accelerating the drilling of roof bolt holes and reducing the quantity of materials needed to fill each hole. A high-speed, small-hole drill has been fabricated and tested in the laboratory. High Priority has been given to safety, reliability, and compatibility with underground coal mining practice. The combination of drag bits and erosion jets is designed for high penetration rate, long wear life, and uniform hole size in a variety of sedimentary strata. A reliable high-pressure, high-speed swivel feeds water to the bit at about 4 L/min (1 gpm). The duplex hydraulic intensifier which drives the jets has a 40-kW (30-hp) capacity. Results of recent full-scale laboratory testing (Now. 1977) are presented.

Jet impingement produces two mechanisms to clean the bottom of a borehole during jet-bit drilling operations. One is an impact-pressure wave in the immediate area of jet impingement. The other is crossflow, which spreads across the bottom away from the pressure wave. Measurements of the vertical distribution of the cross-flow at several positions beneath a 4 3/4-in. tricone jet bit in a laboratory model show that the maximum velocity in the crossflow is directly proportional to the square root of the product of the rate of flow and the velocity of the jets through the nozzles (QV). Other measurements in the laboratory model show that gradients in the impact-pressure wave are directly proportional to the jet QV if the diameters of the nozzles are held constant. Consistency of the basic relationships through changes in the Reynolds numbers of the jets from 31,000 to 93,000 suggests that the laboratory results should be representative of typical flow in field operations having higher Reynolds numbers. Estimates of the impact-pressure waves under conditions other than those in the jet-bit model may be made by comparison with a less complex model—impingement of a jet against an unrestricted flat surface normal to the jet. Equations derived from current jet technology describe the wave in this simple system for a wide range of conditions. INTRODUCTION The efficiency of rotary drilling operations is strongly linked to the efficiency with which cuttings are removed. Cuttings remaining on the bottom of the borehole will impede further penetration by the bit until they are removed. Wasteful regrinding is prevented if the fluid circulated past the bit removes cuttings as rapidly as they are made. Most investigations of bottom-hole cleaning under bits have been concerned with the rate-of-penetration effects of bit type, nozzle configuration, fluid properties, pressure gradients and utilization of hydraulic horsepower. These investigations have shown that drilling muds, weighted to keep the pressure in the borehole greater than in adjacent formations and carrying material which forms a filter cake, apparently plaster cuttings against the bottom, making them difficult to remove. In addition to a demonstration of the factors causing poor cleaning, the most significant result of these previous investigations has been the increased use of jet bits accompanied by better hydraulic programs and better selection of drilling fluids. Undoubtedly, these practices have improved bottom-hole cleaning, but rates of penetration when drilling with muds are still often lower than would be expected with perfect cleaning." Although there is general agreement with the concept that increasing hydraulic energy at a jet bit often increases the rate of penetration by improving cleaning, research workers have differed as to the best criterion for evalyating hydraulics. Some lean toward maximizing the product of the rate of flow and the velocity through the nozzles (QV) others prefer to maximize the hydraulic horsepower at the bit;'"-' "till another says that neither criterion is universally suitable."' This controversy shows that conclusive field evidence has not established the superiority of either of these criteria. Analysis of the fluid flow which cleans the bottom should contribute to resolving the controversy. Impinging jets clean the bottom by creating two mechanisms capable of dislodging cuttings. One is the impact from the momentum of the jet and the other is the flaw parallel to the bottom away from the area of impingement. The impact force appears in the form of a pressure wave on the bottom and, in this paper, is called the impact-pressure wave. The flow parallel to the bottom is called crossflow. Fig. 1 illustrates these two mechanisms. This paper describes crossflow and the impact-pressure wave beneath jet bits and relates them to controllable parameters. Through these relations, criteria for use in designing hydraulics to achieve maximum use of the mechanisms of cleaning are derived. PROPERTIES OF CROSSFLOW CONCEPTS DEVELOPED IN PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS Concepts of scavenging the bottom by crossflow have been well discussed by Bobo, et al." They examine the means by which crossflow may create forces on cuttings and conclude that the cleaning action of crossflow can be increased by increasing the velocity of the flow stream close to the bottom. The Mufulira Copper Mine, Ltd., is in Northern Rhodesia, ten miles from the Belgian Congo border, and is one of the group of four operating mines comprising the Northern Rhodesian Copperbelt. The ore deposits at Mufulira are on the limb of a large syncline striking NW.-SE. and dipping NE. at about 45 deg towards the Congo border. The host rocks are well-consolidated, highly-silicified, felspathic quarzites of the lower part of the pre-Cambrian Séries des Mines of the Katanga. The ore rocks are underlain, unconformably, by the older "Muva Series," in this case hard, green, metamorphosed quarzites. There are three superimposed orebodies, the first, or upper, orebody averaging 40-ft true thickness with a strike length of about 5000 ft, the second, or middle, orebody of about 50-ft true thickness with a strike length of about 6000 ft, and the third or lower orebody of around 60-ft true thickness with a strike length of 8000 ft. The orebodies are separated by varying widths of waste, or very low-grade ore, from a few feet up to 50 ft. The middle and lower orebodies are so close together for a strike length of 3000 ft that they are mined as one orebody. In all, the mineralized zone is about 200 ft in true thickness.

The day is long past when linen and cotton rags were the exclusive raw material of the paper-trade. Wood-fiber, chemically or mechanically prepared, straw, hemp and Esparto grass have largely supplied the demand, which the old materials did not suffice to fill. But even these newer fibers have been of late supplanted, to some extent, by mineral pulp. Weighting and filling materials have also been resorted to, partly to give body to the fabric, partly to increase its weight and reduce the cost per pound. China clay, sulphate of lime and soapstone have generally been employed as loading materials. Even though these materials lack fiber, their addition must by no means be viewed, as it too generally is, entirely as an adulteration. No doubt, to a certain extent, they weaken the paper ; but for ordinary grades the addition of these non-fibrous substances is a positive advantage, as they close the pores between the fibers and lend to the paper a great degree of opaqueness and a superior finish. Fibrous talc, as a form of pulp, has the same effect, without appreciably weakening the paper. When, therefore, some fifteen years ago, fibrous talc in large quantities, and of marvellous purity and whiteness, was discovered in the neighborhood of the town of Gouverneur, it was not long before the

The rheological properties of aqueous solutions of several commercial flocculants were investigated using a rotating coaxial cylinder viscometer. Similarities between the pH-apparent viscosity relationship and the flocculating properties of the reagents are discussed here. Synthetic neutral polymers and polyelectrolytes are used extensively as flocculants in mining and chemical engineering operations. The action of these reagents has been interpreted as adsorption of the polymer flocculant to the mineral surface, followed by the formation of physical polymer bridges between the particles.4,5 A consequence of the bridging model is that the efficiency of a polymer flocculant depends on the degree with which the polymer is adsorbed to the mineral surface, and the extent to which the polymer molecule forms a bridge between colliding particles. The length of the polymer molecule and its orientation at the mineral surface are important in the bridging mechanism since the further the polymer segments can protrude from the mineral surface the greater the probability may be of these segments contacting another mineral particle. Linke and Booth7 have shown that, for a silica suspension, both the settling rate at a given polymer addition and the maximum settling rate obtainable increase with increasing molecular weight. A METHOD of calculating productivity factors for oil, gas, and water systems in the steady state is presented as an illustration of the quantitative application of the fundamental data on the flow properties of heterogeneous- fluid systems. While the numerical results of the calculations cannot be applied directly to field conditions, because they are based on permeability data for unconsolidated sands and involve specific assumptions regarding the nature of the reservoir fluids, the methods of analysis and interpretation should have significance in considering certain specific field situations when the necessary field and laboratory data become available. Moreover, it is felt that even under the idealized conditions to which the numerical calculations refer they should serve to give at least the orders of magnitude of the effects of gas-oil ratio and connate water on observed productivity factors. Within the indicated limitations, the computations imply that the foregoing factors can explain only a part of the apparent discrepancy between the homogeneous fluid productivity factors and those obtained recently in field measurements on the West Coast.

Design methods for foundation anchors and sockets constructed in rock are based largely on empirical correlations which yield a reasonable estimate for initial capacity, but do not address the general concerns of failure mode and load-displacement behavior. This paper focuses on the behavior of foundation-rock interfaces and shows that interface behavior under increasing load results in a progression from an elastic response to secondary behavior, in which interface failure occurs, and finally to a residual stage at large deformations. Procedures to follow this progression are outlined to provide a more fundamental understanding of the problem.
