The nature of slimes handled in the treatment of gold- and silver-ores has been discussed in technical literature to a considerable extent. The subject of slime-filtration from the practical worker's stand-point has also received much comment, arid scattered through the literature of the subject are descriptions of many slime-filtration installations. Articles of this nature serve a valuable purpose and assist materially in the design of new and the improvement of old plants. The subject of the physics of slime-filtration has been touched upon to only a slight extent. The underlying principles are worthy of niore intensive study and experimeritation than they have received, and the main purpose of this paper is to present the results of such study and experimental work as will serve to make clear in part at least many of the principles which control the filtration of slime. Nature of Slime. Much has been written concerning an accurate definition of the term "slime," but no comprehensive definition seems to be gcnerally accepted. The reason for this is clear. A slime consists of at least three different substances, each, when separated, possessing distinctly different physical and to a certain extent chemical properties. These substances are extremely fine sand, a colloidal material which may bc and generally is in a coagulated condition, and a colloidal material which is in a non-coagulated condition. Suspending a slime in a relatively large volume of water by shaking and allowing sedimentation to take place, results in the fine sand settling out with comparative rapidity, followed by the coagulated material, which settles niuch more slowly and finally a certain portion remains

The surveying of oil wells has in recent months become a common practice in the deep fields of the Mid-Continent area. Borehole surveys have been made by mining companies for many years, but the introduction of such methods into the oil fields has been delayed until the past few years, because the value of survey data was not fully appreciated. The acid and gelatin bottle methods of obtaining the angle of deviation and the floating compass method of obtaining the direction of horizontal drift have been in use for more than 20 years. A photographic recording instrument consisting of a plumb bob, magnetic needle and electrically operated camera was devised and used in the Rand mining fields of South Africa prior to 1912.1 Another and improved photographic instrument, depending upon orientation of the drill pipe instead of polar magnetism for direction, has been invented and used. The acid bottle method has also been used in conjunction with oriented drill pipe. The magnetic compass is not reliable for oil-well work because of the unsymmetrical attraction of the needle to the well casing and possible magnetic formations. Many engineers also concur in the opinion that orientation of the drill pipe from instrument to surface will be inaccurate because of the torque exerted between the drill pipe and walls of the hole, causing the lower sections of pipe to twist. When it is considered that 4000 ft. of 6 in. drill pipe has approximately the same slender-ness ratio as 6 ft. of silk thread, such twisting effects can be readily visualized. The gyroscopic compass has been suggested for use in direction finding, but the high cost of such instruments will prohibit their use, except in special cases. Due to the lack of accurate direction-finding instruments, almost all of the survey work in the Mid-Continent fields has been of the acid bottle method alone.

In offering some data relative to this property, and the treatment of its ores, it is proper to say that a purely scientific article has not been attempted. It is hoped, however, that the economic conditions presented may be of interest to the members of the Institute, and that a discussion upon the concentration of the ore may throw some light upon a very unsatisfactory part of the work. The Smuggler-Union mines are located at the head of the San Miguel river, just south of the water-shed between Ouray and Telluride. The latter town, reached by the Denver and Rio Grande railway, is most picturesquely situated, at ail altitude of 8500 feet, in a narrow valley, the lower portion of which exposes only the sedimentary rocks. Along the sides of the valley, large masses of coarse alluvial deposits are left high above the present channel of the stream. Although much placer-work has been done, and some very rich material has been found, the limited extent of the isolated tracts has made placer-mining in this locality generally unprofitable. The valley terminates two miles above Telluride in an amphitheater around which walls rise abruptly several thousand feet. Here the company's mill is situated, being reached by a Bleichert tramway from the mines and also by a spur of the Rio Grande railway from Telluride. At this point, not only are the reddish sandstone and conglomerate beds exposed, but the contact between the conglomerate and the overlying gray volcanic breccia is plainly in view, even at a distance of many miles. A marked stratification is noticeable, indicating the successive layers of igneous breccia, locally termed trachyte. From the bottom of a shallow fissure the near-naked man-animal hacked out a hand-sized chunk of the red rock-like material which, when beaten between other rocks, could be drawn out to the thinness of a flint edge. Unlike flint, however, it did not shatter when, as the point for a spear or arrow, it went wide of its mark and fell amongst the rocks or tree branches. For this reason and others, the red rock- like material was specially sought and much time was spent in trying to break it from the real-rock in which it grew. Only infrequently was a chunk broken free and in this area many hours had been spent to win but a few fragments. What luck then, to remove so large a piece where before nothing but real-rock dust formed whenever the stone hammer hit. Why did this happen? Did yesterday's food-fire, burning on top the red rock, loosen its hold on the real-rock and cause it to break free when struck with the stone hammer? It is not a matter of recorded history that the first heat assisted extraction of native copper from country rock occurred under the circumstances or in the manner related but it is known that crude mining operations using these techniques were conducted by primitive man. In this way the first mineral production may have been achieved and the original example of rapid excavation unknowingly given to the world. Rapid excavation is not a method of removing rock or ore from an insitu condition nor does the term refer to a type of equipment which is specifically employed in mining and underground construction. It is, rather, the nomenclature currently popular in industry-primarily in underground construction- relating to a comparative rate of performance.

On May 11, 1977, the SAMARCO 508-mm (20-in.), 396-km pipeline was placed in service. This system represents the latest thinking in slurry pipeline design and is one of the main contributors to the viability of the SAMARCO project. This paper presents the background, description, and latest information on the system's operation. Special attention is given to the handling limitations of the slurry and to the unique hardware requirements.

Results of a large scale compression test in situ are the subject of discussion. A cube of coal having an edge length of 1.5 meters was subjected to uniaxial compression tests in situ. At the same time both load and deformation were controlled. Deformations were measured on 60 short measurement bases, each 23 cm in length. The bases were uniformly distributed on the side surface of the cube, forming five horizontal rows and twelve columns on the development of the surface. Readings were taken from each gauge for each level of loading which was increased step by step. Due to heterogeneity of the rock, readings showed scatter. Scattered data were approximated by a plane, using the least squares method for each row separately and for the entire population of bases. Orientation of the planes are analyzed. The geometrical measure of the bending moment is introduced. It shows that the magnitude of the bending moment and the bending plane differed from row to row, thus implying that the cube was not only bent but twisted as well. This complex behaviour of the coal cube is apparently caused by its heterogeneity and vertical anisotropy. The results constitute a contribution to the verification of existing design criteria on the stability of mining pillars.

INTRODUCTION AND HISTORY The Kimberley Division of De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited includes four underground mines in Kimberley viz. Dutoitspan, Bultfontein, De Beers and Wesselton Mine and two outside mines, viz. Finsch, an opencast operation and Koffie- fontein, an underground operation. Figure 1 is a map of the Kimberley district showing the location of these mines. Finsch is 150km west of Kimberley and Koffiefontein is 80km south of Kimberley. The head office of the De Beers Company is in Kimberley. The diamond sorting and trading companies for diamonds produced in South Africa are also in Kimberley. Diamonds were first discovered in the Kimberley area at Hopetown in 1866 on the banks of the Orange River. This, and later finds, triggered the start of the great "Diamond Rush". In 1870 the Jagersfontein (now closed) and Dutoitspan pipes were discovered, followed by those at Bultfontein, De Beers and Kimberley Mine (now closed) in 1871, Koffiefontein in 1880 and Wesselton in 1891. Finsch Mine was a more recent discovery in 1961. Finsch, due to go underground in 1986, and Koffiefontein, are fully self-contained with their own treatment plants, housing, services etc. The four Kimberley mines deliver ore by conveyor to a central treatment plant and use joint ser- vices. ,+lining is presently carried out mainly by Block Caving which has replaced the earlier Chambering method. De Beers Mine, on a limited scale, and Wesselton Mine have recently started to use Sub-Level Caving, and both Bultfontein and Du- toitspan are scheduled to use the same method at a later date. The combined ore tonnage produced by the Kimberley Mines is 17 400 tons per day, Koffiefontein 12 000 tons per day and Finsch Mine 17 000 tons per day. THE EVOLUTION OF MINING METHODS Initially, the open-cast mining was carried out to as great a depth as safety would permit. In the early stages of open-cast mining, the Kimberlite was removed in horizontal slices from levels 13m to 20m apart. The rock broken in the workings was raised to the surface by means of endless rope haulage inclines. As lower levels were attained these rope haulages were replaced by aerial hoists, inclined shaft haulages or inclined skip-ways. These methods were dependent upon the strength of the unsupported pipe walls, which became increasingly unstable with depth and a system was adopted whereby the ground mined in open excavations was tipped down passes to tunnels connecting with vertical hoisting shafts sunk in the country rock. As work in the open pit became more and more impracticable due to extensive falls of ground, this system was replaced by a combination of open-cast and underground mining, and eventually by wholly underground methods. Chambering With the advent of underground mining, a system known as "Chambering" (or "Inclined Chambering") was evolved. It was essentially a combination of shrinkage stoping and caving, whereby advantage was taken of the high pressure exerted by the loose rock that had accumulated in the open excavations due to the collapse of the pipe walls. This mining method was introduced around 1890 and was successfully employed, with little change, up to the early nineteen seventies. In this system each mine was served by a main hoisting shaft situated about 300m in the country rock. Main haulage cross cuts were driven from the shaft to the pipe at 200m (600ft) vertical intervals. A sub-vertical shaft, situated close to the pipe provided access to the working levels. Chamber levels were established from the sub-vertical shaft at 13m (40ft) intervals. See figure 2. On each of these levels successive 6,8m wide “cuts" were mined out across the pipe, from one rock contact to the other, and extended vertically to the footwall of the level above. Every 6,8m cut was made up of a chamber and a "back-pillart1, each approximately 3,401 wide. The chamber was mined by overhand shrinkage stoping. TO phase of the Ti-0 system has the structure of NaCl and has a wide range of solid solubility.' In the course of studying the Ti-Cr-0 ternary system, binary alloys were made of iodide titanium and high purity TiO,. It was found from X-ray studies of the binary alloys that a transformation of the TiO appears to take place at a temperature near 925°C. Evidence of this phase change is best seen in Fig. 1. Fig. 1A shows the X-ray spectrometer pattern (CUKa radiation) of an alloy of 25 wt pct 0 corresponding to the stoichiometric composition of TiO.

STUDIES relating to the behavior of coal toward oxygen may have for their purpose the determination of the fundamental factors that underlie spontaneous combustion, weathering and deterioration, and the general topic of storage, as well as those properties that have to do with the underlying principles of carbonization. There is also involved the possibility of developing information relating to the constitution of coal, or at least the chemical properties inherent in the type substances of which the coal is composed. It is the purpose here to record certain FIG. 1. results bearing on this latter idea of the chemical properties that characterize the main constituents of bituminous coal. The avidity of freshly mined coal for oxygen has long been known. What happens to the coal or to the oxygen is not so clear. Is the oxygen absorbed or chemically combined, and what are the conditions as to time, temperature, texture, or components that are most involved in the phenomenon?

THE Ducktown district is in the extreme southeastern corner of Tennessee, its principal railroad point being Copperhill, on the Blue Ridge division of the Louisville &Nashville Railroad, midway between Knoxville, Tenn., and Atlanta, Ga. The ore deposits were discovered about 1849 and development work was begun in the early fifties. Only the "black copper? ores, products of secondary enrichment, from beneath the gossan outcrops and overlying the massive sulphide deposits, were then mined and smelted for their copper content. Upon their exhaustion, attention was directed to the treatment of the pyritic ore remaining, resulting in the devising of a, process consisting of open-heap roasting, followed by blast-furnace smelting, which was practised until 1903, when semi-pyritic smelting was-adopted. In 1908, the companies operating in the district; on account of litigation brought about by alleged smoke damage to forests and vegetation in the adjoining counties of Georgia, were compelled to erect enormous acid plants to prevent the escape of the sulphur dioxide produced in the smelting operations. The utilization of this sulphur dioxide in the, manufacture of sulphuric acid as a byproduct has added to the revenues of the companies, and at the same time has furnished a valuable source of supply of sulphuric acid to the fertilizer trade of the South, and more recently to the manufacturers of explosives for use in the production of war munitions. The steadily increasing demand for sulphuric acid for the manufacture of fertilizers and explosives, together with the decreasing imports of pyrites, from which the acid is generally produced, now makes it imperative that greatly extended resources of pyrite be developed. While the Ducktown deposits do not predominate in pyrite, they do contain an inexhaustible supply of pyrrhotite, admixed with pyrite, which can be satisfactorily employed to supplement or substitute for pyrite in acid making.

THE Eötvös torsion balance permits the measurement of certain second derivatives of the gravity-potential, which are known as the gradients of gravity and the curvature values for an equipotential plane of gravity. These quantities are influenced on level ground by the configuration of the masses underneath. Hence, the torsion balance has gained great importance for the location of geological structures and thus indirectly for the discovery of oil and other mineral deposits. If the ground is not level, however, the measurements become more difficult, because the superficial mass-irregularities also produce more or less considerable disturbances. It is necessary, therefore, to determine the shape of the surrounding topography by leveling as well as by consulting topographic maps and to compute its influence upon the torsion balance. The correction thus determined is called, in general, the topographic correction; it is composed of two constituents, the terrain correction and the cartographic correction. The terrain correction would be that part of the topographic correction as derived from the direct leveling of the area surrounding the station; whereas the data for the computation of the cartographic correction are obtained from a topographic map, usually beginning with a radius of 100 meters, as under most circumstances it is difficult to level along a larger concentric circle about the station.

The low solubility of bismuth in copper and its segregation at copper grain boundaries with resulting embrittlement is well known.1-3 The heterogeneous diffusion of liquid bismuth into polycrystalline copper has also been studied.4 This work presents some further observations on these phenomena using high-resolution auto radiography to detect the presence of bismuth in copper polycrystalline and bicrystal specimens. The auto radiographs were made by the stripping film technique which produces an autoradiograph that is intact with specimen surface and can be examined simultaneously with the under-lying microstructure. The details of the technique have been described previously.3 In one series of experiments, high-purity copper was alloyed with 0.02 to 0.03 wt pct radioactive bismuth obtained from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. No more important question has come before the coal industry in the past decade than the prevention of stream pollution by mine drainage; especially in Pennsylvania, where large areas of coal land have been developed. It may be thought that the problem of labor or lack of transportation outweighs in importance that of stream pollution. We can see possible remedies for labor and transportation problems but there is no known satisfactory solution of the mine-drainage problem. The subject has been given little serious attention, for, until recently, it has been little understood; but in the past year it was brought to the attention of the coal-mining industry by the introduction, in Congress, of several bills designed to prevent the discharge of acid waters from mines or other sources into navigable streams, or their tributaries. The first legislation proposed was the Applebybill, H.R.7369, designed particularly to prevent the oil pollution of coastal waters. It contained the following provisions, which the coal men regarded as referring to the coal industry. It shall be unlawful to throw ... any refuse matter of any kind ... into any navigable waters of the United States or into any tributaries of any navigable waters from which the same shall float or be washed into such navigable waters. The chemical, steel, paper, and other manufacturing industries, as well as the mining industry, objected to this clause, the miners claiming that it would prevent the discharge of waste or mine drainage into any waters of the United States, for all streams or tributaries finally reach navigable waters. The next bill introduced was that of Congressman Briggs, H.R. 7430, an amendment to Section 13 of the Pollution Act of March 3, 1899. The original act referred chiefly to oil and oil refuse, but it provided also "that no material of any kind should be deposited on the bank of a navigable water, or tributary, which might reach the waters and interfere with or

ON the 6th of February 1684, Dr. Martin Lister mentioned at a meeting of the Royal Society1 that "brass is magnetical," and promised to give an account of that assertion at some other time. He repeated his promise but never fulfilled it, and it was left for William Arderon2 to show, in 1958, that brass could be made magnetic by hammering and that it would retain polarity after magnetizing. Twenty-seven years later Cavallo3,4 examined the matter in great detail. Working with cast calamine brass, he showed that it could be made magnetic by hammering and nonmagnetic by subsequent annealing at a red heat. He found that annealing at a very high temperature caused the samples to lose their magnetic quality permanently, even after subsequent cold-working, but that remelting and cold-working restored it. He encountered some samples of brass that could not be rendered magnetic by any treatment. Experiments in which these were remelted with iron additions gave negative results, and Cavallo concluded that iron impurity was not the cause of the magnetism. He worked with 50-grain (3-gram) samples melted under the blowpipe, hence cooled very quickly. Bennet5 made whole crucible charges from copper and zinc, and found the resulting brass ingots to be magnetic only when iron had been added and then only after cold-working. All these observations applied to material in the cast condition, in which coring would produce a continuous spectrum of composition and cooling would result in varying degrees of precipitation. This knowledge of the subject seems to have been forgotten in the nineteenth century. The older brass was made by the calamine process and frequently contained iron in amounts of 0.5 per cent or more, absorbed from the impure ore with which the copper and charcoal were heated in making the brass. When metallic zinc became available in commercial quantities, calamine brass gradually disappeared, and with it the knowledge of its curious magnetic properties. Only when sensitive apparatus replaced the compass needle of the earlier investigators could the effects be detected in relatively pure metal. The effect of cold-working in inducing ferromagnetism was rediscovered by Bitters in 1930 in a sample of impure copper, and this was confirmed by Lowance and Constant,9 Honda and Shimizu, 10,11 and others. In the same year, Tammann and Oelsen12 showed that copper-rich copper-iron alloys after certain heat-treatments could be rendered ferromagnetic or made more strongly ferromagnetic by cold-rolling. Kussman and Seeman13 showed that the change of susceptibility of relatively pure copper on cold-working was associated with the iron content, and concluded that actual precipitation of iron was caused by cold-working, which is a satisfactory theory until one considers the improbably high rate of diffusion that this would involve. Ventilation within a coal mine is essential to the welfare of those employed therein, from the standpoint of health, safety, and efficiency. While the saving of life and the preserving of health are the chief reasons for ventilation, efficiency and production are increased. In spite of the fact that we speak of air as having a certain composition, the proportions of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide are not fixed, but vary between small limits. The different elements are not chemically united, they are merely mixed and each is free and can be separated with little energy. For this reason air in the mine workings is seldom found in a pure state. Factors that necessitate ventilation in coal mines are those that change the composition of pure air. Contamination of mine air results from the burning of oil-fed flames, the use of explosives, the oxidation of coal, and the liberation of gases by the coal. The extent to which these factors exist governs the size and general plan of the ventilating applianccs required. An efficient ventilating system is one that will furnish air at the working faces in sufficient volume to dilute and render harmless noxious gases and at the same time maintain an oxygen content closely approaching that of pure air. In a well-ventilated mine, the oxygen seldom falls more than 0.5 per cent. below normal. The carbon-dioxide content of the air in the average coal mine will vary from 0.1 to about 0.8 per cent., which amounts are not harmful. Three per cent. of carbon dioxide in air doubles the frequency and the depth of breathing; it is plainly noticeable and if breathed continuously for several hours its effect would probably be harmful. Slight reductions in the oxygen content of the air, such as occur in well-ventilated mines, have no debilitating effect on the worker. A person not exerting himself would fail to observe any unusual physical effect in an atmosphere: containing 17 per cent. of oxygen. This condition, however, or even a condition showing an oxygen content below 20 per cent., would indicate poor ventilation and that the elements which tend to reduce the efficiency of the worker are present, namely water vapor and a high wet-bulb temperature.

Restriction programs in important raw-materials industries in foreign countries have been abandoned after lengthy trials. Presumably, failure has been a logical consequence of the attainment of objectives of the restrictive schemes in the early periods of their administration in defiance of economic law. In general, the chief objective has been the elevation of prices of the products of these industries. More conservative plans have sought the maintenance of a price structure that was in jeopardy at the time restriction was initiated. The course of the administrat'ion of restrictive measures can be traced by the result's of restriction, viz.: the creation or maintenance of highly profitable prices; the over-expansion of productive facilities; the accumulation of inventory; and finally, by the collapse of the price structure, which invariably has led to abandonment of the restrictive scheme. The theory and practice of restriction as applied to industries that have tried it are too well known to need detailing here. Restraint of Production of Crude Oil Regardless of the record of the catastrophic outcomes of restrictive measures in other industries, our industry has not been deterred from attempting restriction of crude-oil production. The assumed bases for success of our restrictive plan are clear. They follow from the fact that the physical characteristics of the petroleum industry differ from those of other industries that have tried restriction. Its raw material is a highly essential substance, a natural, exhaustible resource. The extent of its reserves is unknown, a fact that arouses the cooperative spirit of conservationists. At no time before the inauguration of restriction had its developed reserves been sufficient to supply more than the requirements for a few months without the help of new drillings. To a considerable extent its discovery involves the element of chance. Its economic production seems to require an unnatural relationship; namely, cooperation among competitors, because it is a fugitive resource, capable of moving from under one owner's property to underlie another's. Thus its recovery presents intricate legal questions concerning property rights.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the behavior of oil securities during the six-year period January 1932 through December 1937. This period was selected because of its varied character. It includes the depths of the depression, the broad and spasmodic recovery, and the recession collapse. The first part of the analysis is devoted to the correlation of a number of economic factors with an index of 13 oil stocks. The second part is a comparison of the different,ial behavior of 6 oil stocks. The relationships developed here are only a few of many that might be considered in a complete analysis. The stock market is regarded as a barometer of business confidence and as such exerts an important influence upon corporate policies, particularly upon industrial expansion. The complex and continuously changing nature of its price structure, the ebb and flow of influences and the effects of impacts require dynamic rather than static analysis. When treated in this way, many of the important fluctuations in market prices and changes in the relationships between securities appear quite logical. The market for oil securities has varied widely in recent years. The Standard Statistics index of 13 oil stocks made a bull market peak of 166.7 in September 1929. The collapse of the boom and the ensuing bear market finally carried the index down to a low of 36.4 in June 1932. From this point oil stocks made an irregular recovery; they reached a top at 139.7 in March 1937, and after maintaining this approximate level through August, declined precipitously to 93.3 in December 1937. The prices of these 13 oil stocks have gone up and down under the influence of numberless variables. These variables are of two kinds, those external to the industry, and those that are solely due to its internal condition. The external factors are political, social, and economic, both domestic and foreign. These are the influences that induce the ebb and flow of all prices in general and security prices in particular. Among the internal factors are the regulation of industry, the development of new reserves and processes, and the disequilibrium due to lack of balance between supply and demand. Some of the simpler relationships are examined in this paper.

Ventilation within a coal mine is essential to the welfare of those employed therein, from the standpoint of health, safety, and efficiency. While the saving of life and the preserving of health are the chief reasons for ventilation, efficiency and production are increased. In spite of the fact that we speak of air as having a certain composition, the proportions of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide are not fixed, but vary between small limits. The different elements are not chemically united, they are merely mixed and each is free and can be separated with little energy. For this reason air in the mine workings is seldom found in a pure state. Factors that necessitate ventilation in coal mines are those that change the composition of pure air. Contamination of mine air results from the burning of oil-fed flames, the use of explosives, the oxidation of coal, and the liberation of gases by the coal. The extent to which these factors exist governs the size and general plan of the ventilating applianccs required. An efficient ventilating system is one that will furnish air at the working faces in sufficient volume to dilute and render harmless noxious gases and at the same time maintain an oxygen content closely approaching that of pure air. In a well-ventilated mine, the oxygen seldom falls more than 0.5 per cent. below normal. The carbon-dioxide content of the air in the average coal mine will vary from 0.1 to about 0.8 per cent., which amounts are not harmful. Three per cent. of carbon dioxide in air doubles the frequency and the depth of breathing; it is plainly noticeable and if breathed continuously for several hours its effect would probably be harmful. Slight reductions in the oxygen content of the air, such as occur in well-ventilated mines, have no debilitating effect on the worker. A person not exerting himself would fail to observe any unusual physical effect in an atmosphere: containing 17 per cent. of oxygen. This condition, however, or even a condition showing an oxygen content below 20 per cent., would indicate poor ventilation and that the elements which tend to reduce the efficiency of the worker are present, namely water vapor and a high wet-bulb temperature.
