The resistivity, Hall coefficient, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity were measured as a function of temperature for cation-rich alloy single crystals covering the composition range across the PbTe-SnTe system. Alloying of PbTe with up to 20 pct SnTe was found to have little effect on the energy gap. Above 20 pct SnTe the alloys were "p" type but below this range the sign could be varied by heat treatment. The lattice thermal resistivity of the compounds SnTe and PbTe is raised by alloying one with the other. Z values in the order the interesting values obtained. THE PbTe-SnTe system has several interesting features. For one, PbTe is a useful thermoelectric material and the possibility of improving its figure of merit by alloying with SnTe, an isomorphous compound, has been suggested since these pseudo-binary solid solutions generally have a more favorable ratio of electrical conductivity to thermal conductivity than either of the components.' Other interesting features relate to the conductivity mechanism, band structure, and stoichiometry of the compounds and their alloys. PbTe is a semiconductor with an energy gap of about 0.29 ev2 at room temperature whose conductivity sign and magnitude can be varied from "n" to "p" by controlling the proportion of lead and tellurium with respect to the stoichiometric ratio.3 Excess lead results in "n"-type conduction. SnTe is found to exist only as a "p"-type material of relatively high conductivity. This behavior is attributed to stoichiometric deviation by Brebrick4 but Sagar and Miller proposed that the behavior of SnTe must be due in part to the presence of an overlapped band. An investigation of alloys of this system, therefore, might give additional information which would permit one to evaluate which of the two proposals is the more appropriate one. Abrikosov et al.' studied the room-temperature electrical properties of these alloys and reported data for Seebeck coefficient and resistivity on poly-crystalline alloys. The present work is a more exhaustive survey of the PbTe-SnTe system. Re- sistivity, Hall coefficient, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity were measured over a wide temperature range for single crystals at 10-pct intervals of lead/tin ratio across the pseudobinary system. The relative concentration of tellurium was controlled so as to obtain metal-ion excesses in all cases. SAMPLE PREPARATION The crystals were prepared by melting elemental lead, tin, and tellurium in weighed proportions in evacuated Vycor capsules. The lead and tellurium were high-purity grades obtained from American Smelting & Refining Co. The tin was supplied by Comico. The proper calculated proportions of lead, tin, and tellurium were weighed and charged into prepared Vycor capsules prior to evacuation. The capsules were prepared from 15-mm Vycor tubing. A sharp point was worked on one end of the tube. A pyrolytic graphite coating was deposited on the Vycor walls by heating the tip to 800°C in an atmosphere of acetone-saturated argon. An additional coating of graphite was deposited on the pyrolytic coating from an Aquadag suspension. Above the coated tip the tube was reduced in diameter to form a constrictive neck. To avoid scratching the graphite coatings the charge was placed in the tube above the constriction. After a low-temperature bake, the evacuated capsule was sealed. On subsequent heating the charge melted down into the lower portion of the capsule. The crystals were grown by lowering the capsule through a Bridgman-Stockbarger furnace. The lowering rate was 1 in. per 8 hr. The upper portion of the furnace was set for 950°C and the lower portion for 800°C. In general the yield of single crystals was about 25 pct. The mixed compositions were, as expected, the most difficult to grow. The finished crystals were sectioned into 5/8-in. slices. The tip, end, and middle slices from each crystal were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence to determine the lead-to-tin ratio. The resulting values were used to plot a composition vs distance plot for each crystal. Slices were selected from each crystal, with the aid of the composition plots, to cover the complete range of compositions at 10-pct intervals. In general, the slices selected were taken from the seed end of the crystal where the longitudinal segregation (as determined from the X-ray fluorescence analysis) was a minimum. Laue single-crystal analysis and metallographic analysis was used to verify if a slice was single or polycrystal. Any grain boundaries were clearly visible in the as-cut and polished condition. While many parts of Canada's pre-Cambrian shield are well served by railway, it is frequently necessary for prospecting purposes to proceed farther into areas inaccessible by rail. To such areas in summer the canoe was at one time the accepted means of travel for the prospector while the dog team was much used in winter. Although summer travel was much improved by the development of the outboard motor, the lack of facilities for cheap transportation has been a serious hindrance to the employment of capital in opening up the distant fields. The pre-Cambrian surface of Manitoba, like that of Ontario, is hummocky, with rounded hills and ridges of rock alternating with basinlike depressions and valleys occupied by lakes and rivers Or by many low-lying portions covered with muskeg' Routes to the mines have not usually been direct or easy and seasonal vagaries have presented problems in themselves. In summer, water transportation may be the cheapest method for the longer distances but it is not every water route that will satisfy the conditions of loading freight on to a boat or scow and of conveying it without interruption to its destination. By its location, a mine may require a large program of boat transportation in summer Over part of its route, to be followed by winter freighting for the remainder. In order to carry on development and produc- tion over a long period, it may be necessary to haul large quantities of supplies during the winter. This seasonal problem, particularly for the out-of-the-way properties, is SO important and demanding as to make it a major operation in the life of the mine. The -use of the tractor during winter months for heavy machinery and bulk supplies, and the use of the airplane throughout the year for the transportation of personnel and for emergency requirements, have greatly improved transportation to places that are inaccessible by rail. Canada has pioneered in both these methods. Development oF Transportation Twenty-two years have seen a marked change in transportation methods in Canada's mining country. Horse-drawn sleighs have given way to the tractor and that to some extent has been supplanted by the airplane. One of the earliest ventures involving transportation of considerable magnitude was that of the Mandy mine, on Schist at in northern Manitoba. According to accounts of early mining activities in Manitoba, the Mandy mine, beginning December 1916, had 3300 tons of ore hauled 40 miles by sleigh to Saskatchewan River and in summer this was conveyed by barge to The Pas, 130 miles, and then by railroad to Trail, British Columbia, 1200 miles. One of the most striking features of the coal series passing from peat through brown coal, lignite, etc., up to anthracite is the gradual reduction of moisture content with the increased coalification of the original plant material. Thus drained peat from a bog may contain 90 per cent water, brown coal contain 50 per cent, lignite 30 per cent, while a bituminous coal may contain only 1 per cent moisture. Moisture, therefore, is one of the important factors to be considered in coal classification, especially with the lower rank coals. With bituminous and higher rank coals the moisture content is less satisfactory for classification; it may even pass a minimum value and then increase with increasing rank to anthracite and superanthracite. Coal in an undisturbed seam contains moisture which is an integral part of the coal, but it may also be wet with free, underground water percolating through the seam. Only the former must be considered in evaluating the moisture content of the coal for classification purposes; this will be called the "true moisture" of the coal. When the seam is mined and sampled the sample taken may show the true moisture; on the contrary, it may contain in addition free mine water or, especially in dry, well ventilated mines, it may contain less than the true moisture. Coal contains unstable organic compounds which may decompose, with the production of moisture, when the coal is exposed to air at ordinary temperatures, or is heated with or without exposure to air. The potential moisture of a coal therefore is higher than its actual moisture. The lower the rank of the coal, the greater its instability, as a rule, and the greater the care necessary to avoid oxidation or decomposition in any investigation of moisture content. The majority of coal workers have preferred, on account of the difficulty in evaluating the true moisture of a coal, and for other reasons, to classify coals by analyses calculated to the dry-coal basis. A number of workers familiar with lower rank coals have recently insisted that the classification of such coals can be satisfactory only if analyses on the moist-coal basis are employed. The moisture-holding capacity of coal is therefore intimately connected with coal classification, and in this paper a procedure is outlined for determining the true moisture of a coal,

Measurements of the rate of decomposition of austenite at constant temperature are commonly represented by plotting the percentage transformed on linear coordinates against time on either a linear or a logarithmic scale, a method that yields a curve that in shape resembles an integral sign (Fig. 1). A graph of this kind is not always convenient because extrapolation to the beginning or end of the transformation, or even intebrpolation, may be uncertain unless there are a large number of observations, which seldom happens; furthermore, the degree of consistency of a set of measurements is difficult to judge from such a curve. It is desirable therefore to find some mode of plotting, or even better to find a standard variety of graph paper, that gives a straight line instead of the integral shape. The straight line has many advantages; the number of readings required to fix the position of the curve is greatly reduced, interpolatiorr is easy and rapid, extrapolation can be carried out with greater confidence and, finally, the consistency of the measurements is readily estimated from the scatter of the points. The last advantage is particularly valuable when the data are obtained by direct microscopic examination alone, because they are influenced by the skill of the observer in estimating the relative size of areas, possibly also by undetected inhomogeneity of the specimen. A search for ways of representing the observations as a straight line yielded two methods which are described in this paper. The paper also includes an account of some interesting relations brought to light in applying these methods to the available experimental data. Usually the best way to derive such a method of plotting is to base it on established principles of chemistry and physics, as has been done, for example, for the temperature variation of the equilibrium constant of a chemical reaction. But so little is known of the mechanism of the decomposition of austenite, and so little is available in the way of well established background for changes of this kind, that it is simpler to rely upon purely empirical means. The general plan therefore is to study existing data with a view to finding some function of the direct observations that will

The simultaneous segregation of two solutes during the directional solidification of an ingot is treated mathematically on the basis of simplifying assumptions. Expressions are derived for the difference in concentration of two solutes, and for the location and concentration gradient of a pn barrier formed in a semiconductor by the segregation of a donor and an acceptor. THE problem of normal segregation of a single solute during the freezing of an alloy has been treated mathematically by a number of investigators. Gulliver' showed that coring increases the quantity of eutectic above that to be expected at equilibrium, for a system having limited solid solubility and, on the basis of simplifying assumptions, calculated the fraction of eutectic to be expected. Scheuer2 expressed composition of solid solution in terms of a distribution coefficient and the fraction solidified and compared experiment with calculation for the systems A1-Cu, Al-Zn, Cu-Sn, Cu-Zn. Hayes and Chipman,3 in a detailed study of segregation in a low carbon, rimming steel ingot, calculated distribution coefficients for a number of solutes in iron, compared calculated and experimental segregation curves, and discussed the effects of process variables such as rate of solidification and stirring. In the present paper a mathematical analysis is made of the simultaneous segregation of two solutes during the orderly freezing of a solid solution system, with particular emphasis on the difference in solute concentrations. Although the analysis is quite general and can be applied to the segregation of minor elements in alloys, it is directed in particular at the solidification of a semiconductor containing a donor and an acceptor. Normal segregation has unique aspects in a semiconductor, because of the ways in which donors and acceptors affect the electrical properties. The difference between two solute concentrations becomes of importance, as does also the gradient of the difference where the difference goes through zero, this being the concentration gradient of excess carriers at a pn barrier. A primary object of this paper is to extend the mathematical treatment of segregation to include these newer aspects which are of particular significance for semiconductors. One property of interest is the electrical conduc- tivity, which arises from the presence of donors 'or acceptors in solid solution. The conductivity may be either n-type or p-type depending on whether donors or acceptors, respectively, are in atomic excess. For both germanium and silicon, elements of Group V of the Periodic System, such as P, As, and Sb, are donors and elements of Group 111, as B, Al, In, and Ga, are acceptors.4-6 If a donor or acceptor is present alone in solid solution, the conductivity is proportional to its concentration." If both a donor and an acceptor are present, then the conductivity is proportional to the difference in their atomic concentrations. If the donor and acceptor segregate at different rates then a pn barrier in certain circumstances may form at some point in the ingot. Accordingly, equations are derived and illustrated which express the effect of segregation on: 1—the concentration of a single solute with a discussion of the assumptions; 2—the difference between two solute concentrations and means for minimizing its variation in an ingot; and 3—the location and concentration gradient of a pn barrier. The analysis is applicable to processes in which the entire charge is melted and then progressively frozen from one end. The method in which an ingot is solidified in a crucible7 and that in which a solidifying rod is pulled from the melt8 both fall into this category. Segregation of One Solute If a cylinder of molten alloy is caused to freeze slowly from one end, a normal segregation of solutes will usually occur, producing a lengthwise concentration gradient in the ingot. Depending on whether a solute raises or lowers the melting point of the solvent, it will become concentrated in the first or last regions, respectively, to freeze. If it is assumed that freezing is such that there is no diffusion of solute in the solid, complete diffusion in the liquid, and that k, the distribution coefficient, defined as the ratio of solute concentration in the just-freezing solid to that in the liquid, is constant, then the

To a very large extent the quality of a mild steel ingot is determined by the manner in which it is poured into the ingot mold and its behavior during the first few minutes after it has been poured. The formation of the solid rim of metal around the periphery of the mold, the effervescent action of the liquid steel within this solidified rim and the upward or dounward movement of the metal level are indications of what is going on beneath the surface of the liquid metal, especially at the interface at which solidification occurs. Observation of this "rimming action" enables an experienced observer to predict the thickness of the sound skin of the ingot and the location and extent of cavities or "blowholes" caused by entrapment of gases. The control of rimming action at the hands of a skillful steel pourer is a vital part of the control of quality in mild steel sheet, and the behavior of the liquid steel during the rimming period is a useful criterion of the melting and refining practices employed in the open hearth. The behavior of rimming steel during solidification depends primarily upon the evolution of gases from the molten metal and it is therefore a problem of considerable interest to determine the nature and amount of the gases evolved. A number of attempts to determine either the amount or the analysis of the evolved gases have been reported. Klinger,' in 1925, analyzed the gases extracted from rimming, sernikilled and killed steel ingots and found that the chief constituent of the rimmining gas was carbon monoxide. The relatively large amounts of nitrogen reported in his first few samples may have been due to incomplete removal of air from the gas-collecting mechanism. McKune² reported similar studies of rimming ingots from which surprisingly large proportions of nitrogen and hydrogen were evolved. Ameen and Willners3 determined both the amount and composition of gases extracted from unkilled ingots with the aid of diminished pressure. Their ingots weighed only 80 kg. (176 lb.) and apparently were solid within two or three minutes, so that their

Melbourne, capital of sedate Victoria, is oddly enough the home of a game known as "Australian Rules." Euphemistically described by devotees of the game as a cross between Rugby and Soccer, it appears to the novice to be more akin to organized mayhem. They don't even play it in some parts of Australia, but in Melbourne 60,000 to 80,000 whooping spectators throng the Cricket club of a Saturday afternoon to see a match. Actually, the game is fast and grueling but the victory laurels always go to the skillful team, the one that plays the ball rather than the man. Australians also play the ball in their ground rules affecting those interested in mineral exploration and mining. Prospecting Rights: Throughout the island continent, nearly all mineral rights are reserved to the Crown, administered by the individual states and, in the case of the territories by the Commonwealth government. The owner of the surface rights cannot sit on his minerals, and the term minerals even includes sand and gravel. Prospectors are protected by mining codes or ordinances of the various governments, which are quite similar from state to state.

GEOLOGICAL problems are approached from a geometrical (space relations) viewpoint, a kinematical (time sequence) viewpoint, or a dynamical viewpoint. The first two require sound training in conventional geology and in field methods. The third approach requires a solid foundation of chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Modern training for geologists should include close integration of basic sciences with geological principles. INTRODUCTION Our knowledge of the earth has increased tremendously during the last half century. We know more about its surface configuration, the distribution of its natural resources, the procession of living forms that inhabited it in the past, the chemical composition of its oceans, the areal distribution of its surface rocks, the movements of its atmosphere, and so on. Not only do we know more facts about the earth, but we have a better understanding of the processes that take place on and within it, such as the nature of earthquakes, the thermodynamics of the atmosphere, the chemical equilibria involved in the formation of igneous rocks, the mechanics of stream flow, the dynamics of the earth's origin, and so on. Many sciences contributed to the sum total of this knowledge, including such established disciplines as geology, geography, physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology. Out of this accumulation of new knowledge grew also a group of new sciences, such as seismology, oceanography, meteorology, volcanology, hydrology. Collectively these latter are known as the geophysical and geochemical sciences, and to a large extent they began as branches of geology. Until the turn of the century, for example, the study of earthquakes (seismology) was a part of geology, although as early as 1846 Mallet, a physicist, had suggested that the subject could be investigated by elastic-wave theory. Comparatively little progress was made along these lines until the seismograph was developed near the turn of the century; since then, additional earthquake data have accumulated rapidly, but more important, the interpretation of these data essentially has kept pace with their accumulation. In similar fashion, meteorology was generally considered a branch of geology as recently as one or two decades ago. Considerable progress had been made in such aspects as weather forecasting, but the science dates its recent rapid rise from the year 1911, when Bjerknes first applied the principles of dynamics to the analysis of air masses. The rapid development of such disciplines as oceanography, volcanology and hydrology was due in part to the application of principles of chemical equilibrium, of dynamics, and of thermodynamics to earth problems, by men who were essentially physicists or chemists by training. The last half century, therefore, and particularly the last two decades, saw the influx of numerous chemists and physicists into the realm of the earth sciences. High-grade cobalt concentrates were produced from the complex Blackbird ore with very good recovery in continuous pilot-plant operations in which a low-grade bulk cobaltite-pyrite flotation concentrate was roasted in a multiple-hearth furnace to oxidize the pyrite selectively. The cobaltite was floated from the resulting calcine.

Cornwall, Pa. magnetite ore, containing recoverable sulfides in the form of chalcopyrite and pyrite, has been mined continuously since 1742 1 Beneficiation of the ore was begun in 1905, at the Lebanon concentrator located six miles from the mine. At first, only magnetite was recovered, using Grondal magnetic separators. In 1907, copper minerals were recovered by means of Wilfley tables. Copper flotation, attempted as early as 1912, was finally successful in 1919. In 1940, flotation of the cobalt- bearing pyrite was begun, and Cornwall ore became the major domestic source of cobait for many years. In 1916, the Bethlehem Steel Corp. began to purchase interests in the Cornwall mine and Lebanon concentrator properties, and by 1926 had acquired complete ownership. Metallurgical practice at the old Lebanon concentrator was good, but by today's standards the plant was outdated. The flowsheet was complex, due both to the mineral content of the ore and to the low capacities of much of the equipment. As the flowsheet developed, buildings were added and the plant was spread over a relatively large area, with resulting high manpower requirements. Another disadvantage was the six-mile rail haul from the mine to the Lebanon concentrator.

THE tin deposits of Cornwall appear to have been worked for at least 3000 years. Prior to the sixteenth century, the tin came exclusively from alluvial deposits. At that time, shallow pits or mines were started in the hill sections. Mining of copper seems to have begun at the same time, but does not appear to have been especially important until about 1700. From that time until the close of the nineteenth century, copper was of major importance. Lead, and to a lesser extent, other metals, such as antimony, iron and manganese, were produced in commercial quantities during the same period. With the opening of the eighteenth century carne increasing difficulties with water because of the increasing depth of the mines. Among the efforts made to overcome this difficulty was the construction of the "Great County Adit," begun in 1748, taking 20 years to complete, and with its branches having a length of 20 miles. Adits proved capable of handling-only a few of the water problems, and led to rapid adoption of the steam pumping engine in the latter part of the eighteenth century and the early part of the nineteenth. It was in this period that the Cornish pumping engine, still considered by Cornishmen to be the most satis-factory unit for handling large quantities of water, carne into existence. The development of a means of controlling the water made possible the opening up of a number of rich deposits where profitable work-ing was further assisted by numerous improvements in mining and milling machinery. During the middle of the past century, Cornwall, with an average yearly production of 10,000 tons of tin metal and an even slightly larger tonnage of copper, enjoyed a period of unprecedented prosperity. How-ever, the relatively high prices of both copper and tin served not only to encourage prospecting (and much speculation) in Cornwall, but also in other countries. The rapid development of copper mines in the United States, together with sudden impoverishment of the lodes with increasing depth in the greatest of the Cornish copper mines, brought the copper boom to an abrupt end, the production of copper at the close of the cen-tury being negligible in importance and being secured in large measure

INTRODUCTION In the preceding chapters we have discussed the various elements of mineral economic analysis, their interrelationships, and the most accepted and advanced techniques by which these elements are manipulated to provide the decision maker quantitative measurements for judging alternate investment opportunities. Regardless of how carefully the economic evaluation is made, and how comprehensive the study of economic parameters has been, uncertainty still remains a significant factor in the outcome of the analysis. The investor or money manager is acutely aware of the uncertainty factor. Many of the economic parameters are functions of economic forecasts and value estimates that can- not be known with any degree of certainty. The postulated DCF-ROR is based upon certain estimates representing "best guess" values, and a single point parameter DCF-ROR analysis represents a combination of "best guesses." The wise decision maker looks at such an analysis and asks the "what if" questions. What if the production cost is 10% higher than the estimate? What if there is an overrun in construction costs? What if the mineral price falls lower than expected? What will be the effect of a higher royalty rate? Many more such questions may arise in trying to assess the total risk involved in funding a mineral project. Prior to the advent of the computer it was difficult to answer all such anticipated questions because of the many laborious calculations involved. Now, with the aid of the computer, most of these questions can be answered by the analyst at the same time the original computations are made by using the process of sensitivity analysis. Sensitivity analysis shows the effect of critical parameter changes upon the DCF-ROR or other profitability measure. When probability of occurrence can be associated with the various parameter value levels, sensitivity analysis becomes probabilistic analysis, and the risk factor can be quantitized in terms of total probability. SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS The determination of the sensitivity of the profitability index (usually the DCF-ROR) to changes in the various economic parameters, taking them one at a time, is called sensitivity analysis. The analysis may be performed for any number of parameters involved in the DCF-ROR computation. Generally, in mineral evaluations the most sensitive and most tested parameters are: the metal or mineral price, the operating cost, the annual production grade, and the initial capital invest-

THE reflection method in seismic prospecting has aroused much interest in the past few years. The purpose of the present paper is .to present the method of reflections in the mapping of geologic structure and also to give some indication of its limitations. The reflection method is well adapted to the mapping of geologic structure in the Mid-Continent fields, and has been found most useful there. The refraction method is ideally suited to the finding of structures, such as domes, where the amount of relief is very large. This explains the brilliant success of the refraction method in the Gulf Coastal region of Texas and Louisiana. The additional fact that salt has a much higher velocity than the sur-rounding sediments made their discovery much easier. By the use of the reflection method, differences of relief of 25 to 50 ft. to the mile may be detected at a depth of 5000 ft., and the depth points accurately plotted on a map. This is hardly possible by the use of the refraction method. The reflection method has been in almost continuous use in the Mid-Continent area since 1926, but very little, if anything, has been published until recently(7) ? regarding either the method or the results. The dis-covery of several oil fields is now attributed to the use of the reflec-tion method. Reflection methods have been used by the Germans to find the thick-ness of the ice of several glaciers. (2,8) The depths there considered were of the order of only a few hundred feet. For the method to be of any practical value in this country, it must be able to work to depths of several thousand feet. As was indicated above, this is now possible, though there are many problems connected with the reflection method yet to be solved. The refraction method requires that the shooting be done over long ranges. It was necessary, for example, to take distances out to several miles in order to penetrate some five thousand feet. Naturally this uses a good deal of dynamite. In the reflection method the distances are much shorter and the amounts of dynamite are much smaller, within limits which will be noted below. The chief distinction between refrac-tion and reflection methods is to be found in the analysis of the seismo-gram. Refraction shooting makes use of only the first arrival of energy
