Introduction IN order to realize the economies which would result in operating the mine pumps at the Chapin mine with electricity. generated by water power, the Oliver Iron Mining Co. recently installed a hydro-electric plant at the upper Quinnesee, falls on the Menominee river, and constructed a transmission line to the mine. On account of the large flow of water in the Chapin mine, and the great depth from which it has to be handled, it was necessary to make a thorough investigation of the merits of both the motor-driven centrifugal and motor-driven plunger pumps, in order that the most economical results as regards power, cost of installation, maintenance, and operation, be obtained. This investigation resulted in the selection of motor-driven centrifugal pumps, as the cost of the pumps and motors, installation, and maintenance was considerably lower, and the space required in the underground workings very much smaller, than for the plunger pumps. The overall efficiencies guaranteed by several of the centrifugal-pump manufacturers were so nearly those guaranteed by plunger-pump manufacturers that the saving in power which would result from the installation of plunger pumps did not justify their increased first cost and the increased cost of installation under the conditions prevailing at the Chapin nine. In order to substantiate the representations of the centrifugal-pump builders it was deemed necessary to insist upon a factory test of the completed units before shipment, the test to be conducted under conditions of head and capacity approximating as nearly as possible those under which the pumps would operate in service. Furthermore, it was considered necessary to demonstrate, by test, that there were no deficiencies in design or capacity of the pumps or motors before their final installation in the mine, as it would be extremely difficult to make alterations in the pumps or motors after they were installed.

Kinking is an important deformation phenomenon in poly crystalline a zirconium. The crjlstallo-gvaphic features of the most important form of kinking have been determined with the aid of twins formed at 77°K in grains previously kinked at high temperatures. It has been .found that the kink-band boundaries correspond to walls of edge dislocations with (1150) Burgers vectors and dislocation lines parallel to (1070). The present observations imply that basal slip is an important secondary-slip mode in polycrystalline zirconium. Previous single-crystal studies13 did not veveal this mode Other evidelzc.e for (0002)(1120) slip is also presented. ThE first studies of kinking in hexagonal metals were made by orowan,1 using single-crystal cadmium wires. He suggested that this was a new de- formation mode in metals, different from ordinary glide or twinning. Next, Hess and Barrett2 studied zinc-crystal rods in compression, and were able to offer an explanation of the phenomenon described by Orowan. They concluded that kinks required no new deformation mechanism and were a special form of deformation band that developed gradually and solely from basal glide. Similar kink bands were then observed by Washburn and parker3 on zinc crystals deformed in tension at low stresses and high temperatures. In titaniun,4 kink bands associated with {1010}<1120> prism slip have been observed in coarse-grained specimens. Magnesium5 and rhenium6 have also been observed to kink in conjunction with their basal- and {1010} prism-slip systems, respectively. Yttrium has (1010) as a predominant slip plane, but no observations of kink bands were reported.7 Since no previous investigations of kink bands in zirconium have apparently been made, this study was proposed. Its aim was to determine the crys-tallographic features of a type of kink band frequently observed in polycrystalline zirconium. ONLY the acute phase of the smelter fume problem is new. The problem itself is older than the Christian era. While both lead and copper were mined and crudely smelted ; on: 3,000 years ago, it was not until the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula and the British Isles, which occurred but shortly before the beginning of the Christian era, that there was any evidence of smelting operations on a scale sufficiently large to permit a fume problem. Around Huelva, Spain, are found more than 30 million tons of slag from lead smelting conducted there by the Romans. Pliny tells us that more than 20,000 slaves were employed in the Iberian mines. Extensive mining and smelting by the Romans in England and Wales were coincident with the Iberian proceedings. These metallurgical operations were upon a sufficiently large scale to produce marked results both upon the surrounding country and the smelter workers, but, as they were those of a conqueror upon conquered soil, conducted by slaves, imperial Rome failed to recognize that such a thing as a smoke problem did or could arise, and whatever fume question there may have been at that .time remained a question only to those who had no chance to answer any phase of it. The smelting operations of the Romans extended over about 400 years, and little is "recorded of lead and copper smelting from that time until the 16th century. From the revival beginning at this period up to the present century, the growth of smelting has been comparatively gradual. In Great Britain, smelting was conducted almost wholly in localities where metallurgical operations were of paramount importance, and the communities that grew up in smelter localities were due to and dependent upon the mines and smelters. This fact had much to do with the comparative freedom of British smelting from burdensome fume litigation and legislation. To a lesser degree these conditions applied to the German operations which, when coupled with the further fact that most of the early German operations were to a greater or less degree fiscal workings of Prussia, Saxony and Brunswick-Hanover; accounts for

CHROMITE deposits in southwestern Oregon occur along definite zones or horizons in sill-like ultramafic intrusions. These horizons are here referred to as ore zones and are distinguishable only by relatively Shin and scattered, discontinuous chromite occurrences. The zones are tabular in shape but are usually folded and faulted by the intensive post-intrusion deformation the ultramafic rocks have undergone. A single zone may contain disseminated, nodular, banded, or pods of massive chromite. The typical chromite deposit is composed of a series of thin lens-shaped bodies that lie along a definite plane and generally show evidence of magmatic flow with their long dimensions aligned in the direction of flow. A body of chromite often pinches down to a narrow wisp only a fraction of an inch thick. This thin streak of chromite may point to or be connected with another body of chromite. In some deposits the orebodies have a definite rake. The depth at which chromite may be found can be predicted by its position in a folded intrusive, provided that adequate structural evidence is available. Although the ore shoots are characteristically discontinuous, there is theoretically no limit to the depth at which chromite may be found. Origin: All the chromite deposits examined in southwestern Oregon are of magmatic origin, that is, the chromite was an original constituent of the peridotite magma and became segregated in varying degree from the magma to form the ore de- posits. Examples of early, intermediate, and late magmatic chromite have been recognized in the area. Crystallization of the principal minerals (olivine, pyroxene, and chromite) was apparently near completion at the time of intrusion of the peridotite magma. The magma acted as a viscous crystal mush stringing out aggregates of pyroxene and chromite in the direction of flow. These streaky accumulations are termed schlieren.

In the examination of an undeveloped prospect a decision must be arrived at from an inspection of the outcrops and the exposures in a few shallow pits. Prospects that are offered for sale rarely expose any important quantity of good ore, work having usually been stopped when the immediate exploration no longer yielded favorable results. It should be borne in mind, furthermore, that a great majority of prospects have been examined many times, and if of conspicuous promise, would have been acquired for development. In most cases the problem for the engineer, therefore, is to discover the traces of a valuable mineralization that has disappeared through solution, or the conditions that indicate the possibility, or probability, of underlying secondary enrichments. The available data being meager, every feature should be the subject of careful study-the condition of the outcrop, the structural relationships, the associations of minerals, the alterations of wall rocks, the chances for underlying enrichments, and so forth, as well as the actual assay value of the material exposed. It is frequently advisable to spend the time and money necessary to have trenches dug at various significant points along a promising outcrop; such exposures, even if the depth attained is slight, often disclose conditions that are not apparent at the actual surface, as for example, the existence of soft minerals and the distribution of the various minerals through the mass of the deposit. Trenches also permit samples to be taken from points that were not accessible during former examinations. Strong, persistent outcrops of uniform width may be taken to indicate the probable size and character of the underlying vein,

THE magneto-optic method of analysis had its origin in experiments1 which were designed to detect and measure a time lag in the Faraday effect and later to study this time lag as a function of the wave length of the light.2 Faraday discovered in 1845 that a beam of plane polarized light, when passed through a transparent, isotropic medium traversed by a magnetic field of force parallel to the direction of the light, suffers a rotation. The direction of rotation is reversed with the reversal of the magnetic field and its magnitude depends upon the strength of the field, the length of the path of light in the substance and the nature of the substance. This phenomenon of magnetic rotation is known as the Faraday effect. A question which had been of some interest for years was whether this power of a liquid to rotate polarized light is acquired instantly with the application of the magnetic field, that is, whether it is a case of instantaneity or whether there is a very small interval of time which intervenes between the application of the magnetic field and the consequent rotation of the light by the liquid; in other words, whether there is a time lag in the Faraday effect. Efforts to measure such a lag previously had met with failure. It was recognized at the outset&apos; that since a time lag had escaped detection it must be extremely small, if to a measurable extent it exists at all. It became necessary therefore to adopt a timing device capable of making measures of almost infinitesimally small intervals. The velocity of light served as this timing device, a modification of a method originally employed by Abraham and Lemoine3 being adapted to the requirements of the problem. Since light travels about 30 cm. in a billionth of a second and since settings in our observations may be repeated with deviations not exceeding 3 mm.,

The following article presents notes and data compiled and computed by the writer for use in the determination of: size and slope of mill launders, details of junction boxes and downspouts, and distribution of pulp. It also includes pulp formulas, volume of discharge through bushings, paths of discharging streams, banking of turns and curves. In the design of a concentrating mill, the draftsman usually considers launders to the extent of providing ample "head" for transmission of pulp from one department of the mill to another. The superintendent of construction aims to build his launders wide and deep, and on a slope steep enough to ensure positive flow. So launders are laid generally on too steep a slope, with the result that the repair gang works to maintain launder bottoms and sides against the erosive action of the conveyed pulp. To this end many kinds of liners have been devised: concrete, mastic, white iron, glass, rubber. True, the reduction of slope to the point where a pulp will flow with minimum wear, will minimize labor and expense; but when the desired slope is not predetermined, the millman hesitates to readjust his launder slopes by cut-and-try methods. To the end that the desired size and slope may be found readily, the writer has: (1) conducted experiments with pulps of different specific gravity, screen analysis and dilution; (2) gathered a few graphic data from standard reference works (such as Peele&apos;s Mining Engineer&apos;s Handbook and Taggart&apos;s Handbook of Ore Dressing); (3) computed several tables; and compiled results that have proved dependable for Utah Copper ore. It is quite possible that the following tables and graphs may not be applicable to all ores, but it is hoped that they may prove helpful, even in slight degree, in alleviating a portion of the trouble and migraine of some other millman. Conservation Means Preservation, Improvement, Justice CONSERVATION, narrowly and strictly considered, means the preservation in unimpaired efficiency of the resources of the earth; or in a condition so nearly unimpaired as the nature of the case, or wise exhaustion, admits. And broadly considered, it means more than the word itself implies, for it naturally includes an examination of methods whereby the natural inheritance of the human race. may he improved; and still more broadly considered-and as used in popular discussion-it includes a treatment of the effects of productive conservation measures upon distribution. We shall give our attention briefly to the main points in this informal definition before we pass on to the thesis that conservation is largely a matter of property relations-that a wise conservation policy means wise property relations. Preservation of Natural Resources First, conservation suggests simply preservation, and, in the treatment of the subject which we have had in the United States, emphasis has been laid upon the past and present waste of natural resources and upon the means of putting a stop to this waste. The forests have been depleted; soil has been washed by rapidly flowing surface water from mountain sides. These rapidly flowing waters have produced high streams and devastating inundations, followed by low streams and impeded navigation. The forests have, moreover, been so removed as to bring great danger of fire, and destructive conflagrations have resulted in large waste of resources, including in some cases a destruction of the humus, supplying essential elements in the fertile soil. As a remedy we must have measures to reforest mountain sides, and this means large social control, very frequently taking the form of public ownership and management; but in addition we always find actual and proposed

B.H. Bergstrorn (Research Div., Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co., Milwaukee, Wis.) — Fuerstenau and Cohen have concluded from our study of single particle crushing, which had suggested that the size moduli of the crushed specimens were determined by the specific energy expended independent of feed size, that the same independence with respect to feed size exists for the specific energy-product size relationship for rod mills. They present data supporting this conclusion. Our single particle crushing experiments were on single spheres of soda-lime (type of glass was not given in our study) glass for which the feed size can truly be neglected. However, the feed size cannot be neglected in any case where the effective size modulus of the feed is not too much coarser than the size modulus of the product. This can be illustrated in the second experi- ment of Fuerstenau and Cohen where the feed is considered to be the original -6 +%mesh material. However, one can also consider the product from the 7.5-min grind to be the feed for the 10, 15, 20, 25-min grinds, and the 10-min product to be the feed for the 15, 20, 25-min grinds, etc. If the specific energy-product size moduli curves are drawn for these other feeds, as shown on Fig. 3, the new curves (and some curvature is apparent) are much steeper than the -6 +%mesh feed line. The slopes of these new curves are about -1.5, —1.8 and -3.0. This observation is in accord with the observation by Bond, who states that the net specific energy input to a grinding mill is equal to the specific energy represented by the product less the specific energy represented by the feed. A TECHNIQUE has been developed which makes it possible to determine the spreading pressure of liquids and solids, for simple systems. Data for surface tensions, interfacial tensions, spreading pressures, and contact angles for water, heptane, and silica are tabulated. These results can be applied to the evaluation of capillary rise and displacement pressure in a petroleum reservoir. Appropriate equations are presented and the application of these equations is discussed. The presence of surface-active components affects both capillary rise and displacement pressure and also seems to influence the rate of fluid flow.

REEP studies and measurements in most in-V> stances are based on a relatively gross gage length. Even in some recent theoretical studies on the mechanism of creep, changes were followed by means of X-rays and metallography without regard for the behavior of the individual grains and grain boundaries.&apos;" Analytical studies of creep have frequently indicated that more than one competing process is operative and that the ultimate creep performance depends on the effects of temperature, time, and strain rate as well as grain size.&apos;-" he grains and grain boundaries are known to respond differently to these variables but the extent of the response is still little known, especially in poly-crystalline materials where the relative orientations of grains and grain boundaries are important. This paper reports some experimental observations of the behavior of the grain boundaries and their effect on the deformation in the grains. High purity aluminum was used to avoid complications of aging reactions, second phase, inclusions, etc. Experimental Procedure A small vertical nichrome wound furnace was built to permit direct loading on the test specimen. This furnace is capable of operating up to about 1300°F with reasonable temperature distribution. A ground rectangular quartz window, 1.25x0.5 in., is imbedded in the external stainless steel tube to permit observations of the creep process with a microscope. An argon atmosphere ,was provided to prevent oxidation. The quartz window caused a temperature gradient between the back and front surfaces of the specimen of 15" at 700°F. The temperature gradient could be cut down to 3°F along the length of the specimen by adjusting shunts across the furnace windings. An ordinary metallurgical microscope with a working distance of 14 mm was rebuilt so that it could be moved in three mutual perpendicular directions. Visual examination could be made with either a 30X eyepiece or a 15X filar eyepiece. Using an objective of focal length 24.3 mm and a numerical aperture 0.20 a total magnification of 120X or 240X could be obtained. High purity aluminum rated at 99.995 pct was supplied by the Aluminum Co. of America as % in. then the gage portion was further machined to 3/16 in. diam. The ends were Y4 in. diam and threaded to fit available specimen holders. Two opposite flat surfaces of the gage portion were obtained by milling, giving final dimensions of the gage portion of 3/4x3/16x3/32 in. Machined specimens were first electropolished in Jacquet&apos;s solution.&apos; Reference marks were produced by pressing a thin sewing needle into the surface of the specimen. The specimen was then annealed at 900°F for 24 hr and at 1150°F for 12 hr. Typical macrostructures of specimens treated in this manner are shown in Fig. 1. The range of the grain size was 1 to 5.5 mm (see Fig. l), but most of the grains were of 2.5 mm and went through the whole thickness of the specimen. The specimen was re-electropolished and etched electrolytically to reveal the grain boundaries. In order to reveal the orientation difference of the grains, etch pits were produced on the surface of the grains by etching in a mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acids (HC1, 45 pct; HNO,, 10 pct; H,O, 45 , by volume). The specimens were very carefully put into the holders and furnace; yet even with this care, fine slip lines were developed on the specimen surface.

While a country is small and its coal fields are not many, it may be possible to classify its coals on some basis that avoids both overlap and inconsistency, and that may be satisfactory to the particular country, such as geographic distribution or geologic age, or regional uses. In the adjoining country, however, the coals may differ more or less; broad areas may have escaped the erasure of transition zones by erosion, and the stages of alteration of the coals may lead to a classification different from and even incompatible with that of the other country. Such classifications, developed primarily along national lines, are essentially opportunistic. Further, many even of the "use" terms that have been in more common employment with a degree of international application have lost their significance and value, due to changes in industrial methods and urban life. When the number of coal fields is large and the classification is designed to cover the coals of many countries, the groups or divisions into which the coals are integrated are found to verge one into another; and, though the main divisions may be so naturally composed and oriented that they are relatively distinct and readily separated as entities or units when taken by themselves, the sequence, through classes, groups, and subdivisions, is so complete that we find transition zones through which boundaries must be arbitrarily drawn with minute technical definition. This situation, which is conspicuously illustrated in the United States, is due to the progressive evolution of all coals, irrespective of geologic age, from peats to successively higher ranks, which, if the progressive alteration goes far enough, ends with graphite. This evolution is now firmly established and its complete acceptance is but a matter of time. A classification of all coals in all coal fields can not escape this fact and must take into account all the stages in the transformation of the fuel from rank to rank through division to division, and through group to group. The plan here outlined aims at a natural classification of coals based on their evolution from peats to graphite. As in other classifications, the differentiation of the various groups and divisions takes account of changes resulting from the progressive losses of moisture and .of oxygen of constitution; the relative conservation of carbon; the progressive increase in fixed carbon (inverse to the loss of volatile matter) in

This study was undertaken primarily to determine the reasons for certain variations in the soundness of gravel aggregate taken from a number of widely separated points on the Tennessee River. Under laboratory tests, concrete made with these various aggregates in some cases exhibited marked differences in specific gravity. crushing strength and durability. Gravel was studied in detail from Chattanooga to the mouth of the river and to a lesser extent from Chattanooga to Knoxville. The causes of variation were determined, and variational curves were constructed, which accurately predict the composition of aggregate at any point on the river and therefore its relative suitability for use in concrete. The aggregate at any point is suited for making sound concrete; the variance of suitability is due to varying percentages of sandstone and weathered material, which are less sound than other constituents. Introduction When it is stated that the aggregate from one point is inferior to that from another, it must not be construed to mean that the gravel is unfit for use. The classification upon which such aggregate ratings are based is largely arbitrary, thus inferiority or superiority is merely relative. Samples of gravel were selected from stockpiles at the dams of the Tennessee Valley Authority under construction, from the stockpiles of private companies along the river, and from samples taken by the gravel-exploration barge of the T. V. A. One hundred or more gravels of each size studied were selected at random by taking small handfuls while walking around the piles. These were separated according to the different mineral or rock constituents present, and the percentage of each constituent was obtained by counting. At least three such samples were taken from each size, and all checked with one another within a few per cent. The results were then averaged. In order to check on the accuracy of such sampling, a whole sample was taken from one point after the gravel was thoroughly mixed. The two methods gave approximately identical results. Creep strength has been determined as a function of oxygen pressure for nickel at 510" and 600°C. Creep-rupture life drops from its highest value at the ultimate vacuum of 10-7 torr to a high pressure plateau of nearly constant life which, at 600°C, commences at torr. This behavior is described in terms of a model that relates surface gas adsorption and the generation of fresh crack surfaces. In a calculation based a this model the predicted pressure beyond which the creep strength should not decrease further has been found to agree well with the observed value. The introduction of oxygen during creep in vacuum was found to cause a prompt rise of the creep rate. The magnitude of the environmental effect was much less than generally observed in fatigue and this is attributed to the diffarent crack morphologies in creep and fatigue. GASEOUS environments are known to affect creep resistance adversely1-5 but the effects have received less attention than the much larger ones in fatigue. At low temperatures it has been shown for nickel that the creep rates are faster and the rupture lives are shorter in air than in vacuum and that these environmental effects can be correlated with faster crack growth rates in the reactive environment.&apos; In support of a mechanism of gas adsorption at the crack tip to explain the above effects, a calculation based on kinetic gas theory showed that surface coverage by gas was not as rapid as the exposure of fresh metal at the crack tip in the ultimate vacuum but was in air.7 In fatigue a number of investigations have demonstrated that the reduction of life with gas pressure usually follows a step curve with most of the reduction occurring in a transition range at intermediate pressures and little or no change at high and low pressure.8 There have been no studies, however, in which creep strength has been determined as a function of reactive gas pressure to see whether similar effects would be found. This investigation was undertaken to study the kinetics of the environmental effect in the creep of nickel. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The environmental creep apparatus was constructed to minimize many of the experimental conditions which can cause scatter in data. Dead weight loading is employed and weights are contained within the environmental chamber to eliminate bellows and the necessity for compensation for gas pressure changes. Elongation over the specimen gage length is recorded from a Riehle Model DV Controlled Environment Extensometer which provides readout to 2.5 x 10- in. Temperature is monitored and controlled from a thermocouple at- tached to the specimen gage length to +0.5oC or better. The freon trapped oil diffusion pump vacuum system included an auxiliary liquid nitrogen trap and, with a wide range variable conductance leak valve, pressures from the ultimate vacuum of 10"7 to l03 torr of any desired gas are obtainable. Pressure is measured by means of a hot filament ionization gage below 10"3 torr and a NRC Model 530 Alphatron Vacuum Gauge above 10-3 torr. The oxygen, which was leaked into the environmental chamber, was an Aviator&apos;s Grade of 99.5 pct purity with a dew point of -80°F. Analysis of the nominal 99.8 pct Ni showed the following percentages of major impurities: 0.02 C, 4.01 Mn, 0.005 Si, 0.01 Cu, 0.02 Fe, and 0.034 Mg. Cylindrical specimens were machined with a 0.180

PERSONNEL work is a term recently introduced to cover the great variety of activities in industrial work that deal with the human factor. Much attention has been focussed upon individual phases of personnel work, such as accident prevention, sanitation, "welfare" work, reducing labor&apos; turnover, and so on. In most cases these activities have been carried on as though they were distinct and separate fields; as a matter of fact, they are only different phases of the single problem of human engineering, and each has important and fundamental relations with the others. Thus, for example, high labor turnover is one of the most .important causes of a high accident rate, and unsatisfactory housing conditions are an important cause of labor turnover. In the early stages of the study of these problems, it was necessary to take them up separately; the time has now arrived at which it is desirable to consider them as a whole in order to bring them into the right relation to each other. When thus considered as phases of an interrelated whole, they may be grouped as personnel work. A discussion of the importance of personnel work as a means of in creasing dividends in industry may be objected to by some as a too materialistic way of looking upon work that is humanitarian. Nothing could he more mistaken than such an opinion. Humanitarianism, per se, has no place in industry, and nothing is gained and much is lost in pre tending that it has. The only reason why a corporation engages in business is to make profits, and any activity of the corporation that does not tend either directly or indirectly toward that end is poor business. It is equally poor business to overlook any activities that do tend indirectly to the making of profits. On this basis, personnel work can be justified as a corporate activity; there is no justification whatever for abstract humanitarianism from the business standpoint. One characteristic of the American workman is a general high level of intelligence, and it is an insult to intelligence to ask a man to believe that anything so impersonal as a corporation is really desirous of benefiting

COAL has been fighting a rear-guard action since the last World War. The battle against competitive fuels has been largely guerilla warfare with more sniping within the ranks than of organized opposition. Oil and natural gas are the fuels that over these twenty odd years have driven coal backward and out of many profitable markets. Now, somewhat timidly, the coal industry is trying a new weapon; namely, Research, or let us more properly say, Organized Research. Engineers have been designing this weapon for many years, supported by those interested in coal, including some coal producers. A part of this pioneer work has been Fundamental Research, the Ph.D. kind that is over the heads .of most of us. Another part has been aimed at immediate objectives and realizable profits, the practical, man-in-the-street sort. That is Industrial Research. Enough has been accomplished to make a fair exhibit, but whether this new weapon will have sufficient fire power to rout the opposition, whether the industry will really go into production and use it, the next few years will tell. NEED FOR COAL RESEARCH To utter "Research" is to use the modern magic word; to conjure up the miraculous-rubber from weeds; radar; magnesium from sea water; yes, even gasoline from coal. Research is a very general term. It means something different to every man. What is the coal industry seeking with its research; or what should it seek? And, specifically, how is it going about the job; and is it taking the best way? There are many who say that Coal has been asleep at the switch, while Oil and Gas have been taking the energy business. In an organized way this is true. Large-scale, privately financed research is just started in the Pennsylvania, anthracite industry, and it is still a dream for bituminous coal. What has been done so far collectively is purely defensive; as, for instance, to improve mechanical devices for burning coal so as to be able to recover markets for house-heating fuel long since abandoned to oil and gas. To appreciate just how seriously bituminous coal has slipped back in the national economy in the past 25 years, one has only to recall that, in the last war the Navy required for its operations all the high-grade, low-volatile coal that could be produced, and that anthracite was withdrawn from the middle and northwest markets to keep the eastern seaboard warm. All coal was "rationed" by zones, if not to individuals. Now the Navy, the Armed forces and the Merchant Marine are propelled by oil and gasoline. Gasoline and heating oil are rationed to individuals. Production of all coal in this country in 1918 reached the historic figure of 678,200, 000 tons, and in 1943, after 25 years, it is expected to reach a special wartime total of 660,000,000 tons. Meanwhile, production of crude oil this year may exceed 1,500,000,000 bbl., and like that of natural gas, reach four times the amount produced in 1918.
