It is known that multicomponent powders are mostly nonhomogeneous. This paper investigates the effects of nonhomogeneity of composition and grain size on the melting point and the sinterability of compact taking into account homogenization mass transport and the length of the diffusion path in solid state sintering, and the kinetics of liquid phase formation in liquid phase sintering. After a discussion on the ideal characteristics of a powder for sintering and low temperature reaction, the main conventional processes are compared. Finally we develop the freeze-drying technique and demonstrate the capabilities and the limits of the process by some examples, mainly in the ceramics field.

The steel industry of the United States has depended in the past almost wholly upon imports for its supplies of manganese. Many of the important domestic sources yield ores leaner in their natural condition than the foreign ores the steel industry. has been accustomed to use. To make them available, therefore, either the ores must be concentrated or the practice of the steel industry modified. Roughly 25,000 T. annually of high-grade manganese ores are used for dry batteries for chemical purpose, and in other ways; while approximately 750,000 T. are required for making steel. , By present practice, every ton of steel takes an average of about 14 lb. (1.8 kg.) of metallic manganese. This is generally added to the steel in the form of an alloy, the standard alloys being the 80-per cent. ferro-manganese and the 20-per cent. spiegeleisen, During the year 1917, 286,000 T. of ferromanganese and 193,291 T. of spiegeleisen were made in this country, the former largely from imported ores; and 45,381 T. of ferromanganese. was imported. The metallic manganese represented by these alloys was 304,000 T., the product of roughly 800,000 T. of high-grade ore and 345,000 T. of low-grade ore. Manganese Deposits in the United States Before the war manganese ore was mined in relatively small quantities in the Appalachian region, including Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia, and in Arkansas, but owing to the increase in prices during the past three years manganese mining has been undertaken also in Montana, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Minnesota. From data now available it appears that in this country deposits of high-grade manganese ores are usually small, while materials lower in manganese and higher in iron occur in appreciable quantities. DETAILED knowledge of purchase specifications established by coal consumers is essential to the successful design and operation of a coal preparation plant. ANTHRACITE Specifications should be considered by both the consumer and the producer as guide posts outlining a certain path for both to follow. Plants differ, therefore specifications must differ to meet the varied requirements. Specifications are not of themselves a "cureall" or an assurance of complete satisfaction in fuel utilization. Specifications should not be regarded as a license to engage in an orgy of buying any and all coals that may happen to fall within their limits. This would lead to the indiscriminate mixing of coals which may vary in their burning characteristics. Different coals of equal grade tend to be individualistic in their burning characteristics. Rather, specifications should be used to help simplify coal selection, to reduce the actual number of coals used over a given period; in other words, to have a stabilizing influence on coal or customer turnover. In the final analysis, the use of too many coals per year in a plant is costly to both the consumer and the producer. Too many sources usually result in higher operating and maintenance costs for the consumer and higher sales costs for the producer. Finally, the statement included in the report accompanying the comprehensive Coal Selection Charts prepared by the Coal Committee of the National Association of Purchasing Agents, and released in 1938, is significant. This Committee worked diligently for a period of 15 years seeking to find a scientific and reliable method for selecting coals. The two following paragraphs are quoted from its report: More important is the fact that no ready-made classification or set of specifications can possibly replace the judgment and resourcefulness of an experienced combustion engineer or fuel technologist, nor the usual need for full scale plant tests under the exact conditions of use before a final decision is made.

The two-way belt conveyor for coal mine service simultaneously carries coal from faces and transports men and supplies into the mine, largely eliminating the necessity for rubber-tired supply and man haulage equipment and the necessity of maintaining additional headings. SINCE 1920 use of belt conveyor transportation has increased steadily, and capacity in tons per hour per unit has increased at about the same ratio. Belt conveyor systems for simultaneous two-way material transportation have been widely discussed, but heretofore have proved impractical for specific operations. Studies of a proposed means of disposing of wash-ery waste on the return trip of a main haulage conveyor, as yet uninstalled, led to the application of two-way belt haulage to Weirton's underground supply and mantrip problems. Except for a single-tracked main haulage entry, Weirton mine is essentially a full-belt haulage operation with attendant problems of supply and man-trip haulage that could not be handled with conventional belt conveyors during the regular work shift. It was necessary, therefore, to maintain rubber-tired haulage equipment and haulageways serving multiple-shift continuous operations. The conventional underground belt conveyor is primarily intended to transport coal from working faces to surface. Belts are usually reversed to haul men to face areas at the start of the working shift or to transport supplies. The two-way belt conveyor for coal mine service is not yet offered for sale as a unit by any manufacturer and must be built on order. This conveyor, with return run traveling parallel but opposite in direction to the outgoing or coal haulage run, permits not only haulage of coal from faces, but simultaneously permits transportation of men and supplies into the mine at any time, see Figs. 1 and 2. This eliminates, to a great extent, the necessity for rubber-tired supply and man haulage equipment and the maintenance of additional headings. Unlike conventional installations the return belt is in the open for inspection and maintenance. It is less subject to edge wear, since it runs on regular troughing idlers, see Fig. 3. The only points where the edge of the belt can rub are at the drive unit and the tail units where improved design should eventually eliminate edge wear entirely. Individual conveyor sections are lighter, since all that is needed is a tubular stringer on each side to carry troughing idlers only, no cover plates being necessary. The return run is carried on an assembly identical to that carrying the coal haulage run. These assemblies are definitely easier to handle and are cheaper than installations for the same length of conventional belt conveyor. The four pipes required for the complete conveyor frame may serve only as supports, or, with proper couplings, may be used for mine water discharge line, pressure line for face spraying, telephone cable conduit, or any other purpose requiring a pipe line, see Fig. 4. Additional expense, if any, for the increased number of pulleys needed to turn the belt over for the return service is more than offset by reduced expense for rubber-tired supply and mantrip haulage. The two-way belt haulage system is confined to a single heading on intake air, isolated from all other headings by stoppings on each side, and open for air circulation only at the main haulage way and at the faces. One additional heading, also on intake air, is maintained as an emergency rubber-tired haulage way, all other headings being center-posted and used as airways only until retreat work begins. This method, of course, can and should be used with any belt conveyor, since it provides two independent intake airways for escape in case of fire on the belt or elsewhere. Belt heading is heavily timbered even under good top conditions and space between the two runs permits center posting for the full length

The increase in internal energy as the result of deformation has been measured for lead, aluminum, silver, nickel, iron, and zirconium by using rapid, adiabatic compression. The stored energy increase is roughly Proportional to the strain; the propor-tionality constant increases rapidly with increasing melting point. The fraction of the mechanical energy which is stored increases more slowly, since the strength of the metals also increases with melting point. The values of the stored energy are considered accurate to about 10 pet. The present values appear about 50 pet larger than the more reliable published results where comparisons are possible. It is possible that this difference is due to the high strain rate used in this investigation. Immediately after deformation all these metals release energy at a rate roughly proportional to (time)-'. This release is considered to be associated with dislocation motion but in aluminum (and copper) some additional process seems to be present. This release can represent 20 pet or more of the stored energy. WHEN pure metals are plastically deformed, most of the mechanical energy is converted into heat. The energy remaining within the metal is significant in that it is the energy of the disorder produced and thus detailed knowledge of this energy is a powerful tool in understanding the nature of deformational disorder. While much effort has been expended on this problem, the amount of information available is limited. The situation as of 1958 has been carefully reviewed by Titchener and ever.' The present results have been obtained by a new experimental approach to this problem. The method necessitates high-strain rates which make comparisons with published results less certain, but a high-strain rate is an advantage in that the energy release immediately after deformation can be followed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In the experimental method used, the internal (stored) energy is given as the difference between the mechanical work used in deforming the sample and the heat which is released (the first law of thermodynamics). The work is supplied by two identical hammers swinging freely from a fixed height, the available energy being the product of the mass, the gravitational constant, and the distance through which the center of gravity moves. The initial temperature rise of the sample represents the heat produced by the deformation. The sample temperature is determined by a small thermocouple embedded in and supporting the sample. This process can be repeated over and over to produce increased strains. Most samples are run through about five cycles to a total strain of around 0.7. Further details are covered elsewhere. The determination of the heat is dependent upon the sample weight, its specific heat, the rise in temperature, and any gains or losses to the surroundings. One is dependent on published results for specific heals (the values were taken from a collection).3 The values must be accurate to about 0.1 pet in order that they not affect the results. The best values thus do not contribute to the uncertainty, but this is probably not always the case. The accuracy of the temperature rise is limited primarily by knowledge of the thermocouple characteristics over short temperature intervals, but careful calibration eliminates this as an important factor. One can calculate readily the heat flow between the sample and hammers if the time of contact and the sample temperature are known and if there were no oil at the interface. Assuming the maximum temperature difference, upper values for this interchange have been calculated (the time of contact is determined from the decrease in sample length) and it may or may not be significant. However, no correction is colnsidered necessary because of the presence of a thin oil film which has a thermal conductivity much less than the metals. Except for the possible uncertainty in specific heat, the heat is considered to be adequately known. The mechitnical losses which are recognized as important are: 1) friction between the sample and the hammer:;, 2) the kinetic energy in the hammer suspension system which may not be entirely usable, 3) the rebound energy of the hammers, and 4) the vibration of the hammer heads. All these have been covered in detail elsewhere2 and only the more significant points are made here. The friction turns out to be small except for soft materials (lead)

INTRODUCTION. THERE are three general methods available for obtaining commercial brown iron-ore : hand-screening; washing; and washing and concentrating. Hand-screening has produced a large tonnage of ore in the past, but is rapidly falling into disuse, except as a preliminary step, largely because modern furnace-practice requires all foreign material to be separated from ores before they are delivered to the furnace, and hand-screened ores can rarely be made to fulfill that requirement. Another argument against hand-screening is, that the waste-pile often contains as much ore as the screen recovers. The operation known as hand-screening consists of throwing the ore-bearing material against a stationary inclined screen of 0.5- to 0.75-in. mesh, similar in construction to the screens employed in sand-pits. The recently-prospected brown-ore deposits of Cuba seem to offer possibilities for hand-screening not possessed by the average American deposit, since these ores are not associated with worthless clays. Washing, and washing and concentrating, may be discussed together, since concentrating is never practical on brown iron-ore, except to treat ores that have already been washed. (Strictly speaking, washing might be classed as concentrating, but it is never so designated by brown-ore men.) The various steps of removing ore-bearing material and converting it into ore suitable for blast-furnace use, may be grouped under five heads: loading for transportation ; transporting ; feeding into the washer; washing; and concentrating. These five subjects will be considered in consecutive order. Each of these successive steps may be accomplished in a number of different ways, the choice depending entirely upon the character of the ore-bearing material to be treated.

Any type of agitation within a confined vessel is primarily concerned with two parameters: a level of agitation describing the homogeneity of the constituents (whether it be suspension or mixing), and the energy efficiency with which this level of agitation is accomplished. The following is an attempt to present a solution to the problem of adequately defining and optimizing these properties. A discussion is included of the application of good design practices to the determination of a mechanically efficient shape to the blade elements of the propeller. These practices, excluding several appropriate modifications, have been known, but not well understood, in aircraft fluid mechanics for a number of years. Having optimized the direct impartation of energy to the medium being agitated, attention is turned to one of the more perplexing phenomena of multi-phase systems - definition and prediction of agitation levels. The result of recent study and testing is a method of scaling that the authors believe provides a lucid understanding of governing physical parameters within the agitator itself, allowing one to scale up and down with confidence.

In a theoretical study of hydraulic jetting, the velocity of the abrasive material relative to the velocity of the fluid in the jet stream is analyzed as the jet stream moves through the convergent and straight sections of the nozzle and the region between the nozzle exit and target. The results revealed that the abrasive material exits from the jet nozzle at a lower velocity than the fluid. The exit pmticle velocity can be increased by increasing either the density of the fluid or the length of the nozzle, and/ or decreasing either the particle density or particle diameter. In the divergent jet stream, there exists a point after which the particle velocity exceeds that of the fluid. The relative velocities were considered in the derivation of an equation to predict cutting rate of a circumferential notch and maximum notch depth. Data of a general nature and data which substantiate the theoretical results were obtained experimentally. INTRODUCTION The use of a fluid containing an abrasive material has been an established technique for cleaning and cutting for many years. In the petroleum industry, the early effort to use this technique1 to perforate and/or to overcome wellbore damage met with only limited acceptance because of the short life of the jet nozzle. With the introduction of improved perforating techniques, and later, hydraulic fracturing, the use of hydraulic jetting as a well completion technique became even less appreciated. It was only in recent years that interest in hydraulic jetting was revived. Once this interest was revived, the results of surface tests stimulated the interest of the industry even more than the state of the technology probably warranted because many of the tests were not appropriate for down-hole conditions. However, because of the stimulated interest, the development of the jet nozzle progressed very rapidly to the point where the nozzle life was no longer a prob- lem. With this accomplished, the use of hydraulic jetting in well completion became an accepted practice in a short time. The purpose of this paper is to present a theoretical analysis of the hydraulic jet stream as it passes through the nozzle and travels to its target. With a better understanding of the jet stream and the effects of various parameters, the performance of the process can be predicted more accurately. Equations are presented for cutting rate as applied to circumferential wellbore notching that relate the jet stream make-up, notch configuration and formation material. Also, experimental data are presented on some factors pertinent to hydraulic notching that are not theoretically analyzed. RELATED STUDIES Most of the studiesl-5 reported in the recent literature have pertained to the more practical aspects of hydraulic jetting; i.e., the effects of certain parameters as interpreted from experimental results, and the application of hydraulic jetting in well completion. In reviewing the effects of various parameters, it is interesting to note the reported depths of penetration obtained under various imposed conditions. In general, the depths vary from a few inches to several feet; however, a depth of penetration of less than 6 in., as reported by Thompson,4 seems more realistic for the usual field practice of hydraulic jetting with sand in water for a period of 20 to 30 minutes. In addition to the practical aspects, the study of Brown and Loper5 included a theoretical approach to hydraulic jetting. Their study resulted in the development of a theoretical expression for the maximum depth of penetration if jetting were continued for an infinite time. An analysis of the equations presented reveals that the initial cutting rate is infinite. The equation expressing centerline velocity is that of Forstall and Gaylord,6 which is applicable for a jet stream exiting in a large stationary medium. Since practically all of the fluid pumped into a perforation (or cut) must flow back through the perforation prior to re-entering the wellbore, a description of the medium as finite and non-stationary seems more reasonable. Many large high-grade manganese deposits occur in marine-transgressive sedimentary sequences deposit fed on stable platforms, although the manganese mineralogy varies from carbonate to oxide facies and host lithologies vary from carbonate- to clay-dominated sections. Examples include the Nikopol and related deposits of the Soviet Union and Groote Eylandt, Australia. Recent work has shown that high sea-level stands are synchronous with stratified and stagnant oceans. We suggest that during transgressions and consequent anoxic events, the anoxic deep waters rich in dissolved manganese were dilute ore-forming fluids. Manganese was precipitated on the oxidized side of oxidation and alkalinity interfaces on shallow shelves. Where the precipitate was preserved, manganese ac- cumulated into ore deposits. Sedimentary manganese deposits have not been widely explored for in North America, nor are they always obvious in outcrop. Large areas of North America are underlain by rocks that we consider broadly favorable for such manganese deposits, and the disparity between the high potential but significant reserves of the United States is difficult to reconcile. Important undiscovered deposits seem likely. An area of Cretaceous rocks in South Dakota is presented as a possible location for a United States deposit analogous to foreign deposits described herein.

IN THE Lake Superior District, the air indoors must be heated continuously during eight months of the year and occasionally during the remaining months. Incident with mining in this district, therefore, there is need for heating many of the buildings connected with these operations. In addition to the mine buildings, that is, shops, engine, houses, offices, change houses, etc., such public buildings as schools, library, and theater, when close to the mines, are often supplied from the mine heating mains. At the Copper Range Company's mines, Champion, Trimountain and Baltic, the heating surface thus supplied from the mine mains is over 50,000 sq. ft. (4645 sq. m.) which requires a steam consumption, at times, of 18,000 lb. (8165 kg.) per hour, or the equivalent of a rate of over 50 tons of coal per day (were live steam used). This figure is based on a consumption of 1/3 lb. per square foot of heating surface during the coldest weather, and provided the system is not wasting steam by blowing it to the atmosphere or into the return line on account of leaky traps, which so often is the case. Under the latter conditions, steam consumptions of three to four times the above rate are not uncommon. This shows that the cost of heating is of enough importance to be given serious consideration, especially at this time of rising prices of fuel. The power and heating value of exhaust steam are appreciated by most engineers, and its application for such purposes is general. At our stamp mills, the exhaust from the stamps is used to operate low-pressure turbines, thus reducing the former water rate per horsepower developed by more than 50 per cent.

This paper discusses the physical parameters involved in the slow flow of high molecular weight polymer solutions in porous media. The interacting effects of polymer properties and porous media properties on flow performance are considered. Experiments were conducted with the polyethylene oxides, with molecular weights ranging from 200,000 to over 5,000,000. Frontal advance velocities ranged from I to 30 ft/day. The porous matrix consisted of a flow cell packed with glass beads. Polymer solutions were characterized by viscosity and normal stress measurements. Under certain conditions, unexpectedly high flow resistance was observed. This behavior was observed to be a function of flow rate, pore size, polymer molecular weight and concentration. The polymer solutions exhibit "dilatant" flow behavior in porour media in contrast with the pseudo-plastic behavior in simple flow systems. A theoretical ex-planation of such behavior is presented. INTRODUCTION The use of polymers in the injected water of a waterflood increases oil displacement efficiency by reducing the mobility (k,/pu) of the driving phase. A reduced driving phase mobility results in improvements in the areal sweep efficiency and in the vertical coverage in stratified reservoirs. This mobility reduction may be achieved by a permeability reduction, a viscosity increase or by a combination of the two. Early attempts at increasing the injected water viscosity were not successful because of the poor economics involved. The use of such materials as glycerin, sugar or glycols to increase water viscosity was not economically feasible. Attempts in using certain naturally occurring polymers were not too successful because of the high polymer losses to the rock. A high molecular weight, partially hydrolyzed polyacry-lamide was introduced 3 years ago as a waterflood additive.',' Initial work by Pye' indicated that the presence of these polymers in dilute concentrations decreases the water mobility 5 to 20 times more than would be expected from measurements of the solution viscosity. Such an effect would be of obvious economic value since only a small polymer concentration would be required to accomplish a large reduction in water mobility. This research was designed to study the basic flow mech anisms of polymer solutions in porous media. The interacting effects of polymer properties and porous media properties on flow performance are considered. This study indicates some of the conditions under which these interactions can lead to significant mobility effects. is valid only for Newtonian fluids. For polymer solutions and other non-Newtonian fluids the equation must be modified to consider that viscosity is a variable quantity. Modification of the Darcy equation to include non-Newtonian effects has been the subject of several recent investigations."" The modifications generally adopt a rheological model. such as an Ellis or Dower law model. to Dorous media by defining some characteristic channel radius. Most of these studies showed the porous media flow behavior to be predictable from viscometric data. Investigations involving the flow of high molecular weight polyacrylamide solutions through cores have generally encountered the high flow resistances reported previously by Pye. This high flow resistance has generally been attributed to an in-depth permeability reduction, as evidenced by a reduced permeability to water which has displaced polymer solution from the porous media. Marshall and Metzner" report high flow resistances, which they attribute to viscoelastic effects. In this paper, the effects of polymer molecular weight, pore size, flow rate and concentration are considered. The polymers used are the polyethylene oxides known as Poly-ox. This class of polymers was used because of its availability in a wide range of molecular weights and because of its known ability to propagate well through porous media. THEORY PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF POLYMER SOLUTIONS The polymer molecule dissolves in water by means of hydrogen bonding, but retains some of its own structural identity while in solution. Nonionic polymers, such as polyethylene oxide, are generally considered to have a random coiling configration. This type of molecule has the ability to "sequester" or hold a large volume of solvent within its coils in a manner similar to that of a sponge. INTRODUCTION. IN India the production of mica, which in other countries is of very minor importance, is one of the staple, long established industries, and ranks high in the statistics of mineral products. Nearly two-thirds of the mica of commerce comes from India. The Indians have used mica for glazing and decorative purposes through many centuries. About 14,000 men are employed in and about the mines, and the indigenous and primitive mode of mining is still followed; but, by reason of the exhaustion of the surface supply hitherto won without intelligence or capital, it will not be many years before the present interesting and casual methods will be replaced by a less archaic and more profitable system. India on the whole has little mineral wealth, but the unique resources of its mica fields, cheap labor, and favorable natural conditions render it unlikely that any other country can ever more than temporarily contest her leadership in the production of this one minor but essential mineral. Mica plays a small but indispensable role in a variety of fields of dissimilar application. Its use and value depend upon characteristics which different kinds of mica have in varying degrees, each kind being adapted to 'its own special purpose. Its well-known characteristics of transparency, flexibility, elasticity, toughness, high dialectric, strength, perfect flatness; ease of splitting into thin films, ability to stand high heat and sudden changes in temperature, give it value in many industries. No other substance, natural or artificial, has this combination of qualities. The oldest use of mica is in glazing. The Homer iron-ore mine is at Iron River, Mich. Because it covers a large area, 400 acres, and because there was a considerable depth of water in the glacial drift above most of the ore bodies, this mine has presented a number of unusual and often difficult operational problems. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a few of the most important problems encountered. Surface Water Mining on this property was started on one 40-acre tract. The ledge in this area was the highest on the property and, although it was a real problem, water could be handled by underground pumping. During the first period of mining, drifts were driven just under the ledge and holes were drilled through to the surface material. In later years these drifts have been extended wherever possible. Although these drifts assisted in the drainage problem, it was evident they would not be sufficient alone. Before mining on a large scale could be started on this property, the water problem had to be solved. A number of test holes were put down to the ledge, and showed that there was an average 150 ft. of water-saturated glacial drift above the ledge over the rest of the mine. The upper 70 ft. was gravel and sand and the lower 80 ft. clay and hard pan, with some narrow seams of sand and gravel. It was evident that the water above the clay seam could not be drained off through openings in the ledge and for that reason it was decided to install surface drainage wells. This method of drainage was entirely new at that time and was pioneered at the Homer mine. The sinking of the first well was started in June 1929. Immediately following the first well a number of wells were sunk, but only to the top of the clay seam. This was done with the idea that a greater capacity could be obtained in a shorter time from gravel seams where the water flowed more freely and that the cost of pumping the water above the clay seam would be considerably less than if the wells had all been sunk to the ledge at once. Before the drainage of surface water was started, 1200 gal. per min. against a head of 800 ft. was being pumped from the mine. By March of 1932, with five surface wells in operation, the mine pumping had been reduced to 150 gal. per min. At this time we were pumping 5000 gal. per min., under an average head of 110 ft. from the surface wells. The total pumping costs were 30 per cent less than in 1929 because the greater capacity was being pumped at a much lower head. From 1932 to 1936 the mine was idle and all surface pumping was stopped. Since 1936, 10 new wells have been added with a total pumping capacity of 8000 gal. per min. at the present time. The water level has been lowered 70 ft. since surface pumping was started in 1929, and it is now approximately at the top of the clay. To remove the water below the clay seam, 11 of the 15 wells were sunk to the ledge.

When a flowing oil well is being drilled in with cable tools, it is difficult to determine when an additional streak of pay sand is drilled. By placing a gas meter on the gas-release line from the oil and gas separator, any increase in volume of gas that comes with oil production is recorded. In addition to the better knowledge of sand conditions, these data are a valuable aid in determining the size and depth of shots, plugging off water, and estimating ultimate production. The meter also gives a record of operation while the well is drilling in; and if allowed to remain on the well after completion will give information that may lead to a more efficient recovery of the oil from the sand. A VERTICAL cross section of any oil sand will show great variation in porosity and oil content. In some sands, the entire thickness contains oil, the variation being only the degree of porosity or oil content, but more often the pay streaks are distinctly separated by shells or barren streaks. These pay strata vary in number and may be thin or thick. The total thickness of the sand may be several tens of feet while the part containing oil may be only 1 or 2 ft. thick. The amount of production is not proportional to the thickness of the sand but rather the thickness of the pay streaks. If the total thickness of the sand or the amount that can be drilled is small, or if the initial production is small, the depth at which each stratum of pay is encountered can be determined sufficiently accurately for all present economic purposes. However, when drilling through sand of considerable thickness, giving large initial production, especially where conditions necessitate that the production go through the same gas trap with that from one or more wells already producing, it is difficult to determine the depth at which the pay strata are encountered even accurately enough to guide the placing of shots, and small pay streaks are apt not to be recognized at all.

For some time the writers have been compiling and analyzing statistics of consumption and production of petroleum, its products and related fuels, in order to arrive at a fairly accurate picture of the world-wide situation of the petroleum industry. In production, crude oil, natural gasoline, benzol and alcohol blended with motor fuel have been considered. In consumption not only refined products, but crude consumed as fuel, refinery losses, ships' bunkers and blended fuels have been taken into account to obtain a true balance between supply and demand. Statistics from practically every country and territory have been studied, and where actual figures were not available the estimates have been based on all the data available. The figures in Table 1 indicate that during the last five years the world's production has exceeded demand every year and that the aggregate difference is some 207,150,000 bbl. The supply in the United States exceeded consumption by 111,401,000 bbl. over the same five-year period and in 1931 and 1932 the demand exceeded supply, while outside the United States the excess of output over demand was 95,749,000 bbl. Table 2 combines the excess production in the United States with its favorable balance of exports over imports, showing that the United States has reduced its storage over the five years by about 136,-595,000 bbl., while in Table 3 it is shown that, including its excess of imports from the United States, the rest of the world has added 343,-745,000 bbl. to storage during the period in question, the greatest accumulation coming in 1934. Table 4 shows the world's consumption classified by countries according to the principal products. These tables also indicate that at the end of 1934 the statistical position of the petroleum industry outside the United States was decidedly unstable, a situation that probably will become more acute as a result of the added Iraq production; and that the present favorable statistical position of the industry in the United States, which is partly due to the excess of exports over imports, may be to some extent jeopardized by the unstable situation in the foreign market.

During the last decade the petroleum refinery engineer has made great progress in achieving a better understanding of the physical behavior of hydrocarbon mixtures, with particular reference to their pressure-temperature-volume relationships, the mechanism of the evaporation of liquids, the condensation of vapors, including the changes in composition, and the heat effects accompanying them. With the new insight into the mechanism of movement of oil and gas through the formations in which they occur, achieved by the production engineer, it is clear that the latter will need to utilize in the solution of his own problems much of the information outlined above. It is the purpose of this paper to outline the portions of that information that seem most certain to prove of importance in production work. Properties of Pure Hydrocarbons While it is true that petroleum always consists of highly complex mixtures of hydrocarbons, none the less understanding of the behavior of the mixture must be based upon a knowledge of the properties of the pure components. However, in view of the tremendous number of hydrocarbons existing in petroleum, the determination and formulation of the properties of all of them would seem a discouraging task. The difficulty of the situation is increased by the undoubted facts that the overwhelming majority of chemical individuals in petroleum have never been isolated as pure compounds, none of their physical properties have been determined and even their chemical constitution is unknown. The situation would be hopeless were it not for the fact that certain extraordinary correlations of important properties of various hydrocarbons have been discovered which make it possible to predict those properties for a given chemical individual on the basis of a very limited characterization of it. The rapid increase in reliability, the low cost of operation, the ready application of safety devices, and the growing availability of central-station power have made the question of installing a hoist of the electric type no longer debatable. Where adequate electric power is available, there are few cases where it would be advisable to install a steam or air hoist. The type of electrical equipment depends largely on the nature of the power supply, its capacity, and the form of the power contract under which power is purchased. In a large majority of cases, the available electric power is alternating current, three phase, 60 cycles. There is, however, considerable 25-cycle power in use; and in a few instances constant voltage direct current is the only power available for a small or an occasional medium-size hoist. Where a new hoist is to be installed, the designer of the mechanical parts can readily take care of the maximum stresses likely to be imposed by the motor. Where the hoist is already installed and operated by steam or air and it is desired to substitute an electric motor for the engine, a careful check should be made to determine the advisability of using the old mechanical parts. In most cases it is better to install a complete new hoist than to attempt to use old mechanical parts. A steam engine has a definite maximum torque, which the hoist has been designed to withstand, while a motor may be able to deliver momentary torques beyond the strength of the mechanical parts of the hoist. The selection of the proper type of electrical equipment can only be made after complete information is obtained and certain calculations made to determine the capacities required. There are several methods used in making hoist calculations, but no matter what method is utilized a fair degree of familiarity with hoists and hoisting conditions is necessary before an intelligent analysis and proper selection can be made.
