Development and exploration in Oklahoma showed a definite increase in 1941 over 1940 in production, wildcat activity and total well completions. Geological and geophysical work continued and possibly increased slightly in amount. Oklahoma retained third place in the ranking of oil-producing states of the nation, topped only by Texas and California, and followed by Illinois in fourth position. Production averaged 416,800 bbl. daily, a 1.7 per cent increase, as compared with 409,900 bbl. daily for the year 1940. Maintenance of the state's relatively stable producing rate resulted from the discovery of numerous small pools, the recombing of old areas, the establishment of new producing horizons, and the drilling of an increased number of marginal wells. The market for the Mid-Continent crude was strengthened materially to meet the increased demand. Coincident with a deeline in production in Illinois, shipment of Oklahoma-Kansas crude to the eastern points averaged 453,000 bbl. per day, an increase of 49.4 per cent as compared with 1940. The movement south amounted to an average of 42,000 bbl. per day, a loss of 41.7 per cent. Secondary-recovery programs in Oklahoma were given more consideration, operators realizing that in the future many pools would necessarily have to resort to this type of operation. Five permits for water-flooding were issued by the Corporation Commission during the year. These projects were in Rogers, Wagoner and Nowata Counties, in the shallow northeastern area, which has relatively extensive development of this type in the Bartles-ville sand at from 600 to 1000 ft. in depth. Gas repressuring of an individual lease in the 35-year old Glenn pool, Creek County, proved relatively successful, and after a year's operation was extended to cover a much larger area, with several operators participating. More of this type of work is expected in the future; however, it was given an initial setback when the legislative proposal authorizing secondary recovery in the Wilcox zone of Oklahoma's largest pool, the Oklahoma City pool, was pigeonholed by the committee. A continuation of the low discovery rates within the state would possibly lead to a revival of interest in the project. Many pools formerly classified as prorated areas were removed from this classification and transferred into the group of settled production. At the close of the year the issuance of the Federal Conservation Order M-68 and the interrelated Preference Rating Order P-98 caused a sharp decline in drilling operations, which is expected to continue until such operations are stabilized at a lower rate. The ultimate effect of these two orders on discoveries, production and reserves is a matter of speculation and conjecture. During the year, 2110 new wells were drilled, an increase of approximately 18 per cent as compared with the previous year. During the heating of cold-worked nickel silver, the tendcncy of the material to crack is well known. The present research deals with this question, and may conveniently be divided into the following sections: Changes in these alloys during heating and cooling, determination of the temperature at which cracking occurs, effect of grain size, quenching cracks, methods of overcoming annealing cracking. The work is far from complete, in particular the influence of impurities on this tendency has not been investigated, but the results so far obtained lead to certain definite conclusions, which are of theoretical and practical importance. Changes in Alloys During Heating and Cooling During the annealing of many metals at a temperature just below that at which recrystallization sets in, there is evidence of some change, the effect of which is to harden and embrittle the material. This effect has been most clearly demonstrated in the cases of aluminum, copper, brass, and nickel silver, and appears to be a common property of cold-worked metals and alloys, or, at any rate, the non-ferrous ones. The effect would obviously offer an explanation for certain types of annealing cracking, but the trouble is so much more common in the nickel silvers than in the other alloys that some special cause should be looked for. There is, however, fairly good reason for believing that similar cracking may occur in some of the brasses; D. Bunting1 suggests that the a brasses toward the saturation limit are subject to a transformation closely allied in nature to that known to occur in the nickel silvers at around 320" C. Although the existence of this critical temperature range was known, it did not necessarily follow that this transformation was responsible for the trouble under investigation, so the first portion of this paper deals with the attempts made to determine whether other critical changes might not occur in these alloys. The tensile properties of iodide vanadium were determined as a function of hydrogen concentration. It was shown that the presence of 10 ppm H is sufficient to cause embrittlement of vanadzum over a limited temperature range. The temperature of the observed ductility mininlum is approximately -l00°C, this being a function of strain rate and hydrogen concentration. The yield stress of hydrogenated vanadium is raised sharply in the brittle temperature range. THE present investigation was initiated to determine the effect of hydrogen on the tensile properties of high-purity vanadium as a function of temperature and the role of hydrogen in the brittle-ductile transition. Loomis and Carlson&apos; reported a change from ductile to brittle behavior in iodide vanadium at -110°C with a return of ductility at temperatures below -140°C. Vanadium wire containing 270 pprn of hydrogen was brittle at room temperature while wire containing 100 ppm was ductile under the same conditions. Roberts and Rogers&apos; reported a ductile-brittle-ductile fracture sequence in vanadium containing 400 to 600 ppm of hydrogen. Their data show that hydrogenated vanadium is ductile at 150"C, brittle at room temperature and ductile again at -196°C. Magnusson and Baldwin found a minimum in ductility in vanadium containing 80 ppm hydrogen from tensile tests performed at several strain rates. Information available on the vanadium-hydrogen equilibrium system4 is somewhat incomplete. The absorption of hydrogen is exothermic in accordance with the decline in solubility with rising temperature. The limit of solid solubility at temperatures below 400°C has not been determined due to the difficulties in obtaining equilibrium at these temperatures. Data on the hydrides of vanadium are rather limited. Roberts6 studied the structure of VD,., by neutron diffraction, and observed the ordering of the deuterium atoms below -65°C into a primitive cubic cell with a lattice constant about twice that of the disordered bcc vanadium solid solution. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Vanadium of 99.9 pct purity was prepared by the iodide refining process6 for use in this investigation. This vanadium contained the following analyzed impurities; <20 pprn calcium, 150 ppm carbon, 200 ppm chromium, 30 ppm copper, 10 ppm hydrogen, 200 ppm iron, <20 ppm magnesium, <20 ppm nickel, <5 ppm nitrogen, 150 ppm oxygen, <50 ppm silicon, and <20 ppm titanium. specimen Preparation—Tensile specimens were machined from swaged rods of iodide vanadium. The formation of annealing textures during the course of recrystallization in 2 pct Al-Fe crystals rolled in the (111) [112], (112) [111], and (112) [Till orientations has hem studied in detail. When the rolling texture is composed of both (111) [121] and (001)[110] components, the annealing texture consists of mainly (110) [001] and (113) [332] components. As the (001) [110] component diminishes from the surface to the interior of the rolled crystal, the relative concentration of the (113) [332] component in the annealing texture decreases accordingly, whereas that of the (110)[001] component increases with the (111)[112] component in the rolling texture. Such dependence of the annealing texture on the composition of the rolling texture is in accmdance with the oriented growth mechanism. Grain-growth characteristics during recrystallization, hence the annealing texture, can he considerablv different in (112) [111]-type crystals depending sensitively on the initial orientation of the crystal. In a previous publication,&apos; the formation of rolling textures in 2 pct A1-Fe single crystals with initial orientations of approximately (1ll)[112], (112)[111], and (112)[111] was studied in detail. The deformation texture of these crystals consisted of either a single (111)[112] or a combination of (111)[112] and (001)[110] components in various concentrations. For the (lll)[112] crystal, the deformation texture was a single (lll)[112] up to 70 pct rolling reduction, but it became (lll)[112] plus (001)[110] after -90 pct reduction. For the (112)[113.]-type crystals, the relative concentration of the (111)[ 112] and (001)[110] components varied with the depth below the surface of the crystal, as well as with the amount of deformation. These series of specimens, having deformation textures with a range of concentration of the (111)[112] and (001)[110] components, could therefore be used for a thorough investigation of the effect of deformation-texture components on the formation of annealing textures. In a study of rolling and annealing textures in Si-Fe crystals, Dunn and Koh3 noted that the addition of a (001)[110] component to the (111)[112]-type deformation texture had practically no effect on the recrystallization texture.* According to the ori- ented growth mechanism for the formation of annealing textures, nuclei related to the deformation texture by approximately 30-deg rotation around a common [110] axis have the highest rate of growth and the resulting annealing textures generally have such an orientation relationship with respect to the deformation textures.314 It was reasoned by Dunn and Koh3 that if the oriented growth mechanism operated the recrystallization texture developed from a deformation texture containing both (111)[112] and (001)[110] components should be strongly centered around (113)[332], because (113)[332] is approximately midway between the (111)[112] and (001)[110], and is related to both of these two orientations by [110] rotations of 25 to 30 deg. Hence, nuclei of (113)[332] orientation should have a high rate of growth in the deformed matrix. However, their results were not in accord with this prediction. It was felt by the writers that a detailed study was needed to clarify the effect of deformation-texture components on annealing-texture formation. For this reason, the present investigation was conducted. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimens used for the present investigation were taken from the crystals rolled previously for deformation-texture studies.&apos; In order to follow the progress of annealing-texture formation during the course of recrystallization, a single specimen was taken from each rolled crystal and its textural changes examined after successive anneals until recrystallization was complete. The specimen was carefully cut from the rolled strip with a jeweler&apos;s saw. Prior to annealing, the sawed edges were etched to remove distorted metal, while both faces of the specimen were protected from the etching solution by acid-proof plastic tape. After annealing, the specimen was etched from the "bottom" face only (the reference or "top" face of the specimen was protected by plastic tape) to one half of its original thickness, so that the texture at the surface and at the central section of the strip could be determined by the reflection technique. Within the past two years, a number of publications have called attention to the double peaks, or stages, that appear in the hardness and strength curves of certain aging alloys. The author has shown the existence of double hardness peaks during the aging of a high-purity silver-copper alloy;&apos; and on the basis of electrical resistance, microscopic, dilation and lattice-parameter measurements, hc concluded that the initial hardness peak occurs prior to precipitation while the secondary hardening is due to precipitation. It was suggested that the general mechanism of age-hardening involves two consecutive processes, the first consisting of nucleus or knot2 formation, and the second consisting of actual precipitation and particle growth. It was further held that the two stages are interdependent, but because of nonuniform precipitation they may overlap each other to an extent that increases as the aging temperature is raised. At high aging temperatures, the effect of the first stage cannot be detected because of the rapid occurrernce of precipitation. The general theory of age-hardening recently presented by Dr. M. L. V. Gayler3 is in close agreement with the picture outlined above. With reference to work done on duralumin, copper-beryllium and copper-silver alloys, Dr. Gayler also concluded that age-hardening takes place in two consecutive steps: first, diffusion (in which the solute atoms migrate to certain crystallographic planes), and then precipitation. However, W. L. Fink and D. W. Smith4 have shown that the double aging peaks that appear in the strength curves of high-purity aluminum-copper alloys may be explained without recourse to pre-precipitation phenomena. By means of very careful metallographic technique, Fink and Smith demonstrated that during aging the precipitation takes place at an accelerated rate along the grain boundaries and slip planes as a result of the plastic deformation caused by the drastic quench from the solution heat-treatment temperature. This plant was built in 1907 at the Bankhead mines to manufacture briquettes by the Zwoyer process under license from the Zwoyer Fuel Go., of New York, N. Y. The building was constructed to contain two units, each of a capacity of 10 tons per hr.; one unit was installed at the time the building was constructed, and the second unit is now being built. The coal used is an anthracite, which is more friable than that of Pennsylvania, and, as a consequepce, a larger percentage of dust or waste is produced, which was formerly thrown upon the slack-pile as waste, but is now passed to the " dust-bin " in the breaker, from which it is conveyed to the briquette-plant. An average analysis of the coal, published by Lewis Stockett and 13. R. Warden,&apos; is as follows: Per Cent. An open tube vapor phase epitaxial growth system has been used for large area (multiple substrate) growth of GaAs1-xPx on GaAs substrates. The GaCl-GaCl transport reaction is used with either a GaAs or Ga (nonsaturated) source. Selenium and tellurium have been used for donor impurities, and zinc as an acceptor. The useable substrate area in this system is approximately 20 sq cm. The uniformity of thick-ness of the epitaxial layers are typically better than ±5 pct across a given wafer. Electrical and optical measurerments indicute comparable uniformity in electrical and luminescent properties within a wufer. The application of this system to the large scale pro-duction of GaAs1-x Px for display devices, both discrete and arrays, is discussed. Typical electrical and luminescent properties of light emitting diodes fabricated front material produced by this technique are presented. THE most promising materials currently being utilized for visible injection electroluminescence are GaAs1-xPx, Ga1-xAlxAs, and Gap. All have reasonably efficient emissions in the red portion of the visible spectrum at room temperature; Gap also has an efficient green emission.&apos; At present, GaAs1-xPx has a technological advantage over Ga1-xAlxAs and Gap for display applications, since relatively large (several sq cm) areas of GaAs1-xPx suitable for use in electroluminescent devices may be readily grown by vapor phase growth techniques. In contrast, the preparation of Gap and Ga1-xAlxAs for electroluminescent device applications generally employs solution growth techniques which are at present not well suited for the growth of large areas of uniform thickness and doping level. The capability of uniform growth over large substrate areas and the use of multiple substrates is necessary for the practical utilization of electroluminescent devices. This is particularly important when quantity production or monolithic devices are required. Furthermore, in many display applications arrays of light emitting devices are used, the individual elements of which are of a size resolvable by the unaided eye. Thus the overall dimensions of display are substantially larger than those of most semiconductor devices. It is also necessary to achieve a high degree of control over the growth parameters to attain the required degree of reproducibility of materials properties for electroluminescent devices. In the case of GaAs1-xPx it is necessary to accurately and precisely control the phosphorus content of the alloy, both on a macroscopic and microscopic scale, in addition to the parameters generally associated with epitaxial growth such as thickness and doping level. This value is critical, as it has a major effect on the performance of electroluminescent devices. This paper describes the epitaxial growth of GaAsl-xPx suitable for electroluminescent display devices using a system developed specifically for this purpose, and which contains several novel features. The results of studies of selected physical properties of the epitaxial layers are also discussed. Finally, a brief summary is given of the characteristics of display devices fabricated from GaAsl-xPx grown in this system. EXPERIMENTAL A) Reactants. A number of techniques suitable for the vapor phase epitaxial growth of GaAs1-xPx have been reported in the literature.&apos;-&apos; The method selected for this investigation is that in which the Ga is transported by the GaC1-GaCI3 reaction in an open tube process. The results reported here were obtained using either the combination of GaAs, AsC13, and pH3, or Ga, AsH3, pH3, and HC1 as the initial re-actants.* The ASH3 and pH3 were obtained as dilute *Several different sources of supply were used for these reactants, y~elding comparable results._____________________________________________________ mixtures in HZ; the HC1 was obtained from the reduction of AsC13 by Hz at elevated temperatures. Both selenium and tellurium were employed as donor impurities, and zinc as an acceptor impurity. Selenium was introduced in the form of H2Se, tellurium in the form of tellurium-doped GaAs, and zinc in the form of diethy1 zinc. B) Apparatus. The prinicipal difference between the apparatus used in the present study and that of Tietjen and Amick,8 in addition to size and other related design features, is that RE induction heating is utilized in place of resistance heated furnaces. Induction heating was selected for this application because it appears to have several advantages, including: 1) It is possible to keep all fused silica portions of the apparatus at temperatures well below those of the reaction zone, thus minimizing a possible source of contamination. 2) The thermal mass of an induction heated system can be made small, thus reducing the total time required for the growth process. 3) Sharp temperature profiles (desirable for high deposition efficiency) are easily achieved. 4) The volume of the system for a given substrate area can generally be made smaller than a comparable resistance heated unit. The discovery of the gold deposits of the Jerritt Canyon district, with proven recoverable reserves in excess of 67.6 Mg (2.4 million oz) of gold, has contributed greatly to the tremendous resurgence in exploration for disseminated gold deposits in Nevada and throughout the west. The Jerritt Canyon project, including the Bell mine, is a 70130 joint venture between Freeport Gold Co. and FMC Gold Corp., both of which are wholly owned affiliates of the respective parent companies, Freeport-McMoRan Inc. and FMC Corp. The Jerritt Canyon district is located in the center of the Independence Mountains in north-central Elko County, Nevada, approximately 48 km (30 miles) northeast of the Carlin gold mine and 68 km (42 miles) north of Elko. Although the discovery of a commercial gold mine at Jerritt resulted from Freeport&apos;s exploration activities, the initial identification of a gold prospect in this area was a consequence of a program by FMC in the search for antimony. Their program was, in part, based on data in the Nevada Bureau of Mines Bulletin 61, "Antimony Deposits in Nevada." Work on the property began in 197 1 with geologic mapping followed by sampling and geochemical analyses. FMC geologists, including Robert Hawkins, Russell Hayden, and Hal Hurst recognized the striking similarity of the area to the geologic environment of Newmont&apos;s nearby Carlin gold deposit and soon focused on the gold potential. Increases in the price of gold served to stimulate interest and support for the exploration program. Geochemical samples were collected and analyzed for gold and trace elements usually associated with gold. A strong gold anomaly was found on the North Fork of Jerritt Canyon, which was called the Alchem anomaly. Drill-testing of this anomaly in 1973 revealed significant grades and thicknesses of gold mineralization in the lower portion of the Roberts Mountain formation. This initial discovery and subsequent close-spaced drilling proved the existence of several small pods of low-grade, gold-bearing material which cropped out at their up-dip edges, causing the surface anomaly. The mineralization was very encouraging, but was not, by itself, of economic importance from the standpoint of either grade or tonnage. Freeport Exploration Co. established a district office in Reno in late 1974 with responsibilities for exploration of hard minerals in the Basin and Range Province. Emphasis of the program was directed to the discovery of precious metal deposits. Enfield Bell, as District Manager for this new office, was particularly interested in the Independence Mountains and when the opportunity for a joint venture with FMC became available in 1976, it was aggressively pursued. Enfield Bell and David Stevens evaluated the FMC data and with the support of management formulated a bid in competition with 23 other companies. Freeport was selected by FMC as partner and a joint venture agreement was successfully negotiated. In mid-summer of 1976, Freeport Exploration Co. began an expanded program of detailed mapping and geochemical sampling under the direction of Bell and Stevens that led to new interpretations of the structural and alteration patterns. Hawkins&apos; contribution during this period must be recognized since he not only was one of the original geologists assigned to the antimony and subsequently the gold investigations, but shortly after the start of the joint venture exploration, he was hired by Freeport Exploration Co. as the project geologist for the venture. Hawkins had studied the central Independence Mountains for his thesis and his understanding of the regional geology provided an excellent background for the continued exploration of the gold de- posits. His interpretation of the structure in the vicinity of the Alchem anomaly was of significant help in the Freeport exploration program. Drilling, based on this new under- standing of the geology, revealed the edge of the Marlboro Canyon ore body, which is now being exploited in the Bell mine. IN the process of making steel in the open-hearth furnace the refining of the metal during the working period of the heat is largely accomplished through the agency of the slag. From the birth of the process until the present day steelmakers have recognized the importance of the slag in determining the composition of the metal and the quality of the product. The general relationships between slag composition and metal analysis have long been known, at least in a qualitative or approximate fashion. For examples, the iron oxide content of the slag is higher on lower carbon heats; the more basic slags are higher in iron oxide for a given carbon content; certain amounts of iron oxide and lime are required for phos-phorus removal and a high lime-silica ratio is needed if the sulphur content of the metal is to be diminished. In recent years a number of quantita-tive relationships involving these and other variables have been developed through plant and laboratory studies by numerous investigators in this country and abroad. The direct comparison of laboratory and open-hearth data involves the question of the degree to which each approaches the conditions of chemical equilibrium, a question which, from the open-hearth standpoint, we are scarcely yet in position to answer. And, although a considerable body of dependable equilibrium data has been obtained in the laboratory, this work has not yet been extended to cover the ranges of slag composi-tion encountered in basic open-hearth practice. In the present study we shall not attempt to draw comparisons between data from the two sources; nor do we attempt to draw conclusions as to the approach to chemical equilibrium in the open-hearth furnace. Many of the operating variables that are likely to be erratic or unrecorded during the earlier stages of the heat become more consistent and are more readily subject to observation and control during later stages. For example, undigested lime or ore gradually goes into solution, the rate of carbon drop levels off, and the temperature of the metal is brought under control. INTRODUCTION The Third Theory of Comminution, oftentimes called the Bond Theory, was first published by Fred C. Bond in 1952. Since then, it has been widely used in the milling industry to size crushing and grinding equipment as well as to predict and evaluate their performance. Although two other comminution theories were advanced almost a century earlier, one by Rittinger, 1867, and the other by Kick, 1885, their use was limited because they did not agree with actual commercial comminution systems (Bond, 1961). According to Bond&apos;s Third Theory, the work input is proportional to the new crack tip length produced in particle breakage, and equals the work represented by the product minus that represented by the feed. For particles of similar shape, the crack tip length is equivalent to the square root of one-half the surface area, and the new crack length is proportional to [(1/vT - vF)]; where P and F are particles diameter of product and feed, respectively. For practical calculations, the particle diameter can be expressed in terms of the 80% passing sizes, P and F, respectively. Therefore, the work input is given by, [10 _ 10&apos;, W = Wi [7P_7F(1)] Where W = the energy input to the mill, (kwh/t) Wi = Work Index, (kwh/t) P = square sieve opening which 80% of the product passes, (microns) F = square sieve opening which 80% of the feed passes, (microns) Equation (1) is the mathematical statement of the Third Theory, or the Bond equation. Numerically, the work index is the energy required in kwh/t to reduce a given material from theoretically infinite feed size to 80% passing 100 microns. The work index of a particular material is determined in the laboratory by conducting the standard Bond grindability test. Bond developed separate tests for the rod mill and the ball mill. The Morenci/Metcalf porphyry copper mining operation, located in southeastern Arizona, currently processes approximately 91,000 tonnes of ore per day and has copper ore reserves estimated to be in excess of one bill ion tonnes. Functional groups within the Geology Department (currently staffed with six professional and two support personnel include mine geology, project geology, and hydrogeology. The primary task of mine geologists is daily preblast bench face mapping with grade and mill amenability estimates. Auxiliary duties include detailed in-pi t metal distribution evaluation, mineragraphic work and flux quarry geology. Project geologists conduct exploration and preliminary development projects both within and outside the Morenci district and provide support to ore reserve block modeling and geotechnical work performed by the Morenci mine engineering group. Hydrogeologists handle exploration for and development of groundwater resources and groundwater flow modeling, mine dump leach solution penetration and recovery evaluation, and tailing dam water reclamation.

FERROUS metallurgy today, defined as the art of extracting money from iron ores, appears to suffer from a complex of inherited theory. In so far as pig iron costs contribute to inadequate profit margins, this symptom may be diagnosed as due to persistence, despite disproval, of Sir Lowthian Bell&apos;s theories of reduction. An attempt to meet the economic situation by reducing costs through improving blast-furnace metallurgy would be inconsistent with Bell&apos;s theories. These theories, though refutable on the facts of practice, still prevail and today&apos;s metallurgy, as measured by its fuel economy or smelting efficiency ranging between 30 and 40 per cent. is no better than Bell&apos;s, showing a specific efficiency of 36 per cent.1 If fair to neglect dry-blast operations, it appears that the advance in furnace practice since Bell&apos;s day, as shown by a tenfold increase in individual furnace capacity, has been largely mechanical and that the metallurgy of the process has not been changed materially, since the introduction of blast heat, patented in 1828. It seems fair to attribute, this lack of progress on the strictly metallurgical side to a domination of the industry by false ideas first expressed by Lowthian Bell. What the furnace seems to need first, in the interest of lower costs and of better iron, is some destructive criticism of these ideas, in moderate doses, to be followed by a constructive theoretical treatment; then, research and still more research.

The process of making washed metal now followed is in principle that described by Holley before this Institute in 1879, as the Krupp washing process. Sir Lowthian Bell also experimented extensively in England during 1877 and 1878 on refining iron and joined his interest with Krupp, the process being often referred to as the Bell-Krupp process. The only plant in this country now operating this process is that of the Brier Hill Steel Co., Youngstown, Ohio. This process may be considered as the sole survivor of the numerous methods conceived for refining crude iron, when the removal of phosphorus from steel-making material was the great desideratum affecting large districts. The east coast of England and all northern Germany, the homes of Bell and Krupp, respectively, could at that time make steel only from imported ores. These processes were in use or in various stages of development 40 years ago and all except the Bell-Krupp received their quietus from the development of the basic steel processes, both pneumatic and open hearth. The aim of the early refining processes was, first, the removal of the silicon, which could be done on a sand bottom, and later, the removal of the phosphorus, requiring a bottom which would give or permit a basic slag. The incidental advantages of increased yield and small fuel consumption were not generally recognized or considered; the aim of the later operations was the saving of the difference in value between low and high phosphorus irons, as well as hastening the removal of the metalloids. The chemistry of the washing process follows in part that of the puddling process, and indeed washing might be considered as the first half of puddling, since all the non-ferrous elements of the crude iron, except the carbon, are eliminated and the iron is maintained molten until cast. In puddling, the iron loses its carbon as well, and because of that, its fusion point rises above the hearth temperature; it freezes into a pasty malleable form, and is worked at once by squeezer, hammer, or rolls. Few people realize the tremendously important part that Saline and Pulaski Counties in central Arkansas have played in the winning of the war The present favorable war situation might have been very different if we had not had the bauxite produced during the past two years from these two small areas, a total Of about 15 square miles. As a general statement, it can be said that the Arkansas bauxite deposits are, individually, relatively small, irregular in thickness, somewhat scattered and, therefore, compared with coal or iron-ore or open-pit copper deposits, relatively ill adapted to a rapid and drastic expansion in output. A few years ago it would have seemed an impossibility for these two counties to produce over six million long dry tons of bauxite in one year. However, with the cooperation of the operators, that is what happened in 1943, when the state of Arkansas achieved the seemingly impossible with a production of 6,020,684 1 long tons (dried equivalent) of bauxite ore during the calendar year, compared with an average annual production of 323,7252 tons in the period 1931 to 1941. It became apparent early in the year &apos;94&apos; that the united States soon might be drawn into the war, and, therefore, that an immediate study of the domestic metal situation was necessary. Aluminum is by far the most important metal used in the manufacture of aircraft and many other implements of war and it was evident that there would have to be a tremendous increase in the domestic production of bauxite, which is practically the only present source of this metal. AS more than 95 per cent of the known bauxite reserves of the United states was in Arkansas, careful preliminary studies were made in that state by representatives of the united States Bureau of Mines, the United States Geological survey and the War Production Board in the summer of 1941 Reserves in other states also were studied. The result of these studies was a recommendation by the War Production Board that mining in the bauxite.producing areas of Arkansas be geared for maximum production, in order to supply sufficient ore for this country&apos;s war requirements and, if necessary, to supply the war needs of Canada as well. The annual goal of eight million long tons (dry weight) set for Arkansas by the war Production Board was exceeded in 1943, when in August the output reached a rate equivalent to more than 8,300,000 long tons, dry basis. Because of the comparatively small tonnage of bauxite reserves, Congress appropriated funds for an extensive drilling program to be carried out by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey. Drilling began in May 1942 but owing to delay in delivery of drills, and trucks upon which the drills were mounted the program did not get into peak operation until early in 1943. By the end of July 1944, the Bureau of Mines records indicated an addition to the Arkansas reserves of 10,000,000 long tons (wet basis) in place,

THE spheroidal form of the temper carbon nodules in malleable cast iron and of the graphite mottles of "mottled" cast iron suggests that in both all the graphite in a given mottle or nodule grew from a single center of crystallization or nucleus.? There is, however, a distinct metallo-graphic difference between the mottle and the nodule; the area of mother metal impoverished in combined carbon by the crystallization of graphite in a mottle is practically coextensive with the ramifications of the graphite, while the impoverished zone of metal corresponding to a given nodule is always larger, and usually much larger, than the approximately spherical mass of graphite crystals forming the nodules. Furthermore, the mottle probably is formed during freezing and the nodule almost always at a considerably lower temperature. Assuming that the nodules or mottles can be used as a measure of the existing nuclei, (capable of germination) we propose to record certain observations as to the graphitizing reaction in the light of the number and habits of growth of these nuclei. The present authors, in cooperation with others1-7, have reported upon various cognate aspects of the problem.
