Reissner's thick plate bending theory has been recast for rocks which exhibit the property of double elasticity: different Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio in compression and tension. The governing differential equation and other relevent expressions have been presented in a form compatible to the applied mechanics results so that they can readily be used. Effect of the ratio of Young's modulii in compression and tension, (Ec/Et), on the maximum plate deflection and the maximum bending moments has been evaluated over a wide range. It has been found that the inclusion of bi-modulus property through a parameter (ß = Ec/Et), changes the sheer deformation of the plate to such an extent that the bi-modular effect of rock cannot be overlooked in the thick plate analysis, especially when ß is expected to be greater than 2.

DIFFUSION Of carbon from gases into iron has been the object of much research, because of its long recognized importance in carburizing processes, but the direct diffusion of carbon from steel into iron has received relatively little attention. Because of the increasing use of clad metals in industry, direct diffusion from steel into iron is becoming of practical importance. Therefore, the object of this investigation was to study the diffusion of carbon from several different kinds of steel directly into relatively pure iron, realizing that elements in the steels other than carbon might influence the rate of carbon diffusion. The previous work on diffusion of carbon into iron has been consider-able, and includes many reports in foreign languages. This work has recently been well reviewed by Mehl1 and Krynitsky,2 and the reader is referred to their excellent bibliographies.

In an earlier publication, the application of exoelectron technology to the monitoring of dry grinding in a ball mill was reported. Recently, the author has investigated the ball mill problem in more detail with the system shown in [Fig.1]. Here, some of the current generated in the ore-ball-water mixture was picked up by the metal chains and served as a measure of the rate of grinding. While the mechanism of current generation has not been completely clarified, a parallel study of electrical effects associated with rock drilling indicated that the major driving force is the zeta potential*, while oxidation of the freshly fractured material provides the remainder of the current. Both of these effects are sensitive to the exposed surface area, and it might be expected that the observed currents would provide a measure of the grinding rate. This "surface area" effect allows the measurement system to be used in any type of rock or ore grinding. Some studies with sulfide copper ore indicate higher currents than those observed with silica sand, but the overall pattern of current versus grinding rate is essentially the same. Experimental Studies The experimental system was set up as shown in [Fig. 1]. The initial studies were done with silica sand because of its availability and for comparison with the data of reference 1. The sand was sized to an average of 425 /MI (40 mesh); a typical charge consisted of 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) of sand, 0.85 L (0.22 gal) of tap water and 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) of iron grinding balls 25.5 mm (1 in.) in diameter. For a typical "run," the mill was loaded with a fresh charge of ore and operated for periods ranging from 10-60 min. During this time, the current was measured with a Keithley 417 picoammeter and a chart recorder. At the end of the grinding period, the charge was removed and sieved to recover the 425, 300, and 212 µm (40, 50, and 70 mesh) fractions which were then drained and weighed. A fresh charge was used for each test and every attempt was made to keep the draining and weighing processes uniform.

[ ] THE present investigation started in an attempt to understand certain details of the decomposition of austenite, and of the effect of alloying elements thereon. As the investigation proceeded it became apparent that not only these details, but all the general features of austenite decomposition, could be understood in terms of fundamental physical principles. Since the direct applicability of these physical principles has not been previously recognized, it was decided to incorporate the original results of the investigation into a review of the general subject of the kinetics of austenite decomposition. This review constitutes the present article. An extended summary of the results is given on pages 27 to 30. This article, which deals with the kinetics of phase transformations, may appropriately be considered as a sequel to two recent articles1,2 from this laboratory on the equilibrium relations in medium alloy steels.

THIS Rock Chapel plant of Consolidated Quarries Corporation (Fig. 1) is three miles northeast of Lithonia, DeKalb County, Georgia. It was opened about eight years ago for crushed stone aggregate. This paper reviews a number of experiments that have been tried in drilling and blasting, and gives the practice in use today. It also present, several theories on the action of explosives in this type of blasting. [ ] The rock worked is a bare dome of granite gneiss about 3000 ft. in diameter, rising 150 ft. above the surrounding ground (Fig. 2). It is uniform in composition and quality, without seams, and extends downward to unknown depth below the quarry floor. A water well drilled 600 ft. remained in the same rock. The principal difficulty encountered in blasting is an easy split, which tends to break clown the rock in large blocks.

Wide attention is being placed upon various methods for cleaning the fine sizes of bituminous coals. The author describes and analyzes the results achieved on wet concentrating tables of modern design on unclassified feeds of —Vz in. particle sizes, including tests on high-sulphur coals. THE increased economic necessity of cleaning the small sizes of coal has forced wide attention upon various methods or processes being used. Although numerous cleaning plants in the past have been cleaning coal smaller than Vz or % in., the large quantities of higher ash fines being produced by mechanical mining and the need for cleaner coal under competitive market conditions have brought about many new installations of fine-coal cleaning plants. Of various methods used, one of the more popular types is the wet concentrating table. Approximately 525 tables have been installed in the United States in the past four years of which 320 have been installed in 20, large new plants. There are now probably 1600 tables of all types in existence in this country for cleaning coal. The purpose of this paper is to describe the cleaning of fine coal by wet concentrating tables. Its scope is confined to a discussion of the theory of tabling and some of the factors entering into tabling action, a description of the Deister SuperDuty diagonal-deck coal table and a discussion of the results of tabling various fine sizes of coals. Al- though tables have been used for cleaning coal as coarse as 2 in. and favorable results are reported, this paper is limited to reporting on the results of cleaning coal fines from 1/2 in. down. Also, although it is well known that the performance of tables is even superior under classified or closely sized feed conditions, this paper concerns itself with the results achieved by tabling unclassified feeds. History of Wet Concentrating Tables The wet concentration of minerals by some form of tabling is quite old, starting originally from fixed, smooth surfaced, tilted boards taking advantage of the laminar flow of liquid films and the separation of minerals according to specific gravity. The first pump of this character, made by H. R. Worthington, and, so far as the writer is informed, the first and only one of this kind ever constructed, is now in daily use in the above-named works. The water-pressure necessary for the working of the hydraulic machinery of this plant had been supplied, up to the time of the building of this pump, by two Worthington Duplex High Pressure Pumps, having steam-cylinders of 20 inches diameter and 12-inch stroke, with water-plungers of 71/2 inches diameter; eight inlet and eight outlet valves of 24 inches diameter, and pumping into a 6-inch pipe. These pumps required a large amount of steam, and, in consequence of the various additions to their duty, their capacity became far short of the work required. In preference to putting in another engine of the same class, it was decided to accept Mr. Worthington's proposition to build the compound one under description, he guaranteeing that it should be equal to the demands of the works, and at the same time cause a saving of from 5 to 6 tons of coal per day from the amount required to run the two old pumps. The new engine has been in operation about one month, and so far has exceeded the most sanguine expectations. It consists of two high-pressure cylinders of 21 inches and two low-pressure ones of 363/8 inches diameter, by 36-inch stroke, with water-plungers of 961/2 inches diameter. There are two air-pumps of 20 inches diameter by 18-inch stroke; the condenser being 24 inches diameter by 60 inches high. Both cylinders are jacketed with wood and felt, and the low-pressure cylinder also with live steam. The high and low pressure steamcylinders are in line and immediately adjoining each other, while the inconveniences attending an internal stuffing-box are avoided by having two piston-rods for each of the low-pressure cylinders, running through stuffing-boxes on the outside of the smaller high-pressure ones. The difference of means of milling characteristics by rock and ore type is tested in a statistical manner in the paper. The null hypothesis being tested is that the sample means of two different populations are equal. It is assumed that the null hypothesis is true when performing the test. Because of this, acceptance of this hypothesis leads to the conclusion that the sample means of the two different populations are equal (or there is no significant difference between the sample means), not that the samples come from the same population, as the author asserts. Rejection of the null hypothesis leads to the conclusion that the sample means of the two different populations are not equal. A P value for this test is reported in Table 2 and is incorrectly identified as the probability that the two samples came from different populations. Actually, what was recorded was 100(1 - p) where p is the usual p-value. The usual p-value measures, on a scale of zero to one, the extent to which the data agree with the null hypothesis. It is the probability of observi" a value of the test statistic (Z score) that is at least as contradictory to the null hypothesis as the one computed from the sample data (McClave and Dietrich 11, 1982). The author makes no mention of the fact that were these tests to be conducted together, the chances of determining that the null hypothesis is not true when it is really true are increased considerably (Snedecor and Cochran, 1980). This is a multiple comparisons problem and should be dealt with accordingly. The usual methods involve adjusting the level of the individual tests. Table 2 reports an incorrect 100(1 - p) value in the comparison of concentrate grades for other rock types with .30 to .69% Cu vs other rock types with .70 + % Cu; 86% should be 98.6%. Although the article can be criticized for poor data presentation and discussion of that data, the point the author makes regarding the use of these statistics in the ore reserve estimation process is well taken. It does not appear that inaccuracies in the statistical interpretations have hindered that usefulness.

For anyone contemplating flotation research with only a very limited amount of mineral available for testing, the choice of suitable experimental equipment is by no means obvious. Hallimond's original and delightfully simple cell1 has been modified by subsequent investigators2to give quantitative and reproducible results on small samples. However, the modifications have necessarily compromised its simplicity, and the services of a skilled glass blower are required to duplicate the cell. Vacuum flotation tests3 at best qualitative and may, under certain conditions4, be quite impracticable. A hundred years ago, Thoreau observed that "our life is frittered away by detail," and his advice was to "simplify, simplify," The success of the simple cell described below, which was developed by the author and differs somewhat from Hallimond's original, suggests that Thoreau's advice still has merit a century later. CELL CONSTRUCTION The cell [Fig. 1 (a) and 1 (b)] consists essentially of a 25-ml pipet from which has been cut the con- stricted top. The length cut off is not critical since this merely determines the final volume of the cell. Cell volume may be varied in this way from 20 to 50 cc. A pyrex extension tube, equal in diameter and approximately half the length of the cut pipet, is attached to the top of the pipet by means of 2 ½ in. of close-fitting tygon tubing. When assembled, the two pyrex tubes should be spaced about ½ in. apart. Another length of tygon tubing is added to the extension piece for sealing purposes. A ¾ -in. disc of porous material (teflon cloth is ideal), secured in place over the pipet tip with another piece of shaped tygon tubing, completes the cell assembly. Tygon tubing may be shaped by pushing it over the pipet tip or some similar form and heating carefully over a low flame. For flotation [Fig. 1 (c) 1, the pyrex extension tube is rotated approximately 70º from the vertical and held in position by a wire hook and eye. Floated material, after reaching the free surface, falls and rests on this inclined plane. The barrier formed by the bent tygon tubing ensures that floated material does not slide back and return to the vertical portion of the cell.

The crystal structures of eight of the nine intermediate phases in the Nb-Rh system were investigated by X-ray techniques. The following structures occur: a,Nb3Rh (Cr3O type);o(ofe - cr type) (H.T. phase, structure unknown); Q2 (AuCU type); a, (orthorhombic, analogous to a,, (Ta-Rh)); a (AuCd type); a,, (monoclinic, related to samarium type); a-8 (VCo3 type); a, NbRh, (AuCu, type). Structural relationships between the six close-packed intermediate phases are discussed and a comparison with the Nb-Ir, Ta-Rh, and Ta-Ir systems is made. In the Nb-Rh phase diagram,' nine intermediate phases were encountered. The self-diffusion coefficient in high purity nickel has been measured over the temperature range 870' to 1248°C. The results are described by the relation D = 1.27 exp[—-66,800/RT 1cm2ec-1. The measured activation energy correlates satisfactorily with absolute melting point, heat of fusion, and heat of sublimation. KNOWING the rates of self-diffusion is important in the understanding of many metallurgical reactions. However, in spite of the rather widespread interest in nickel, both commercially and in fundamental investigations, no measurement of the self-diffusion in solid nickel has previously been re- ported." In connection with a program of measuring rates of diffusion in some nickel alloys, self-diffusion in pure nickel has been investigated over a rather wide temperature range by combining a sectioning technique and a surface counting technique.

A CROSS-SECTION of the converter aisle through one of the converters and reverberatories is shown in Fig. 5. The aisle is 280 ft. long by 60, ft. wide by 681 ft. to the roof trusse, which have a 63-ft. span and are us )ported by steel columns spaced at 2b-ft. centers. Two 80-ton electric trails, supplied by the Welman Smith .Owen Engineering Co., with 20-ton auxiliary lifts, serve this building. Matte shells and converter-slag shells are dumped into heavily con¬structed flat-bottom bins located on the south side of the converter aisle and 1.0 ft. above the floor. The material is broken by ball and by hand, shoveled off into ladles for unloading on to the reverberatory charge floor, and charged into the furnace as previously mentioned.

THE work of Merica1 and other investigators indicates that the phenomenon of age-hardening in. alloys of the duralumin type is primarily dependent upon the variation in the solubility of copper with temperature. In addition to copper, however, these alloys contain small amounts of magnesium, silicon, manganese and iron, which may affect the age-hardening either directly or indirectly. The effect of these elements on the solubility of copper and on the manner in which this solubility varies with the temperature is of considerable interest, therefore. The effect of magnesium is of especial interest because apparently it exerts a marked effect on the natural or room-temperature aging of alloys of the type described.2 A series of investigations3 has been in progress in the research laboratories of the Aluminum. THE purposes of this paper are (1) to show that the mineral matter content of coal is satisfactorily represented by the Parr formula; that is, Mineral matter = 1.08 Ash + 0.55 Total sulfur (2) to compare ash-to-mineral-matter ratios with factors by which ash values must be multiplied in order that dry, factor-times-ash-free values shall equal Parr unit coal values; (3) to examine such ash-correction factors and to compare them with similar factors corresponding to certain simplifications or modifications of the Parr formulas and (4) to show that ash-correction factors used for simplification in calculating approximate unit coal calorific values cannot be. correctly used for the conversion of other determined values in an analysis to the unit coal basis, but that each type of calculation requires separate treatment in simplification.
