In-pit crusher location selection has had an important role recently, since increasing diesel prices. One way of reducing the haulage costs is to shorten the truck haulage distance by bringing the truck dump point into the pit. This study covers the work done on the optimum crusher location definition for a company that produces aggregate near Izmir, a city of Turkey located in the west. This paper will discuss the effects of pit geometry and mine access requirements on optimum crusher location selection that are mainly based on the establishment of minimum haulage distance. The method will be introduced first and then the computer algorithm developed for this study will be discussed later in the paper. The augered cast-in-place piling technique was used to install deep foundations 20 feet into weathered sandstone. The project involved the upgrading of the Air Quality Control System (AQCS) for a 560 megawatt coal fired power plant located in Stillwater, Minnesota. The site subsurface consisted of 20 feet of overburden overlying weak sandstone. The overburden consisted of sands and gravels with cobbles and boulders, and variable thicknesses of peat. Ground-water at the site was approximately 8 feet deep. Two foot diameter piers were selected to facilitate installation through the cobbles and boulders in the over-burden and to penetrate the sandstone 22 feet. During installation of the first pier, the weak sandstone broke down to sand-sized material that could not be cleaned from the pier hole without the use of slurry to hold the material in suspension. However, the use of slurry would significantly impact both schedule and cost. Since the sandstone could be easily drilled with the pier equipment, it was believed that 2 foot diameter deep foundations could be installed as designed using augered cast-in-place piling techniques. A brief test drilling pro-gram was conducted to evaluate the viability of 2 foot diameter continuous flight augers penetrating 22 feet into the weak sandstone. The test drilling indicated that augered cast-in-place installation techniques should be successful. Following a short delay to mobilize the additional required equipment, construction commenced. Installation of the 2 foot diameter augered cast-in-place piling to a depth of 22 feet into the weak sandstone was successfully performed.

Historically bauxite-based refractories have been used in applications where andalusite-based refractories could work. Bauxite-based refractories were chosen over andalusite-based refractories mainly because of the availability of low-cost Chinese bauxite and also because many furnaces were designed by international companies that cannot easily access high-quality products. Currently, the availability of low-cost bauxite is under threat as a result of high export duties and tariffs as well as restrictions on the amount of material that China allows to be exported. South Africa is a major producer of andalusite, and this guarantees stability with respect to both availability and price. Refractories based on andalusite have an added economic advantage over bauxite-based refractories in that unlike bauxite, which requires high-temperature calcination before use, andalusite is used in its raw state. This paper constitutes a literature study of the merits, both technical and economic, of using refractories based on andalusite compared to bauxite-based refractories. A preocupação com o adequado tratamento de resíduos industriais surgiu com o conceito de desenvolvimento sustentável criado pelo Clube de Roma e contribuiu para o uso racional dos recursos naturais ao longo dos últimos 50 anos. A preocupação com a produção responsável e uso judicioso de recursos naturais priorizou a reciclagem de materiais na agenda das empresas, tornando-se numa atividade de alta relevância, vital para a sustentabilidade econômica e ambiental. Este trabalho aborda os aspectos técnicos, econômicos e ambientais da reciclagem de resíduos contendo zinco através do estudo de caso de reciclagem de resíduos gerados no processo de fabricação de aço em Forno Elétrico, denominado pó de Aciaria Elétrica (PAE). A indústria ainda está em busca de tecnologias para redução da geração e reciclagem desse resíduo. A relevância do estudo está na utilização da Análise Hierárquica de Processo (AHP) para avaliação e seleção da melhor alternativa, entre várias, para tratamento e reciclagem do PAE. Como resultado, demonstrou-se a eficácia do uso da metodologia no empreendimento de reciclagem de resíduos contendo zinco implantado pela Votorantim, em Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes experience and past research on methods for sealing abandoned areas of a coal mine and areas from which the pillars have been wholly or partially extracted. The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 requires that such areas be ventilated or sealed with explosion-proof bulkheads, but the present study indicates that bulkheads alone cannot isolate areas in a coal mine in which methane and other dangerous gases have accumulated. Gas-air exchanges between sealed and open areas must be controlled.

The Citronen Zinc-Lead Project is one of the world?s largest undeveloped zinc-lead resources, containing more than 13 billion pounds of zinc and lead metal. The project is located in northern Greenland, a self-governed region of the Kingdom of Denmark (Figure 1). Citronen is the northern-most mine in the world, operating at a latitude of 83o 3? N. In excess of 67,000 meters of diamond drilling have been completed to delineate the resource. As of January 2012, the measured, indicated, and inferred reserves for the Citronen project totaled 70.8 million tonnes, consisting of 5.7% zinc + lead (3.5% zinc cut-off) (Ironbark, 2012). For the underground mine plan, room-and-pillar and long holestoping mining methods were selected. The beneficial application of structural fill was considered for increased recovery, efficient tailings disposal, and ground control. Three types of fill were compared - paste fill, cemented rock fill, and iced tailings. An environmental and economic feasibility study concluded that iced tailings was the preferred alternative provided it met the ground control requirements. Ask someone what they can tell you about the Royal Canadian Mint and most likely the first thing that they will mention, is coinage. The Royal Canadian Mint manufactures Canada's one-cent coins, nickels, dimes and quarters - over 1 billion per year. Most of these coins use copper and nickel as base material, and all of this metal is mined, refined and processed in Canada prior to being shipped to the mint for coin production. In 1985 alone, 1270 metric tons of Canadian nickel and 2160 metric tons of Canadian copper were absorbed in circulating coinage. July 1987 will have marked the introduction of Canada's new one dollar coin, an important new addition to Canada's monetary system. The first phase of this program will consume about 2,235 metric tons of Canadian nickel in the initial production run. Annual requirements in subsequent years are estimated at 225 metric tons. The Royal Canadian Mint is also a major producer of circulating coinage for foreign countries. Since the state-of-the-art Winnipeg plant swung into full production in 1976 the Mint has struck more than 5.2 billion coins for some 35 nations around the world. 1985 sales have increased almost 6 fold over 1984. 1987 already shows commitments for a further significant increase in volume in this business. The use of Canadian metals in export to foreign nations as coinage adds still more to the Royal Canadian Mint's key role as a major market maker for Canada's mining industry. At the end of a century of mining education in South Africa, it is appropriate to reflect on the past, take stock of the present and ponder the future of mining education. While it is likely that changes in the mining industry will generate an increased demand for mining graduates, the number of suitably qualified applicants to study mining is worryingly small. While good progress has been made in unifying the educational system that previously provided schooling on a racially separate basis, it appears that a decade or more will be required to raise competency levels in mathematics, science and English, and this paper describes the process as it affects mining engineering programs. It also describes the initiatives currently being undertaken by the University of the Witwatersrand and the mining industry to ensure that the South African industry receives an adequate flow of well-qualified mining graduates, despite more than 70% of the intake coming from severely disadvantaged educational backgrounds.

Mintek has been involved in numerous projects to remove Fe and Mn from dilute Co sulphate solutions by means of oxidative precipitation using air/SO2. Test work was done using a gas induction system, designed and supplied by Outotec. Various aspects, such as SO2 concentration, SO2 flowrate, impeller rotation speed and pH were investigated on a 2 m3 scale. Batch tests were performed using a residence time of 5 hours. Impeller rotation speeds of 0-220 rpm were tested, and it seemed that speeds of between 80 and 220 rpm gave similar Fe and Mn removal rates. Co and Cu losses were generally below 1% and 5% respectively at pH 3.

Methods to determine frother functions, control of bubble size and froth properties, are now widely used. Some collectors also exhibit frother functions which are less understood. Using a water-air system in a mini-mechanical flotation cell setup, this paper determines bubble size and water overflow rate for three amine collectors: one primary amine (dodecylamine, DDA) and two commercial ether amines (Flotigam® EDA and Flotigam® 2835-2L) and their combination with two common frothers, MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) and PPG 425 (polypropylene glycol, molecule weight 425). Compared to the frothers, the amines were less effective in reducing bubble size, giving larger minimum size and the two commercial amines showed evidence of coalescence at low concentration. In blends, at fixed frother dosage, frother eliminated the coalescence but as amine concentration increased the amines dominated bubble size. Water overflow was a strong function of reagent type. For fixed 1-cm froth depth, PPG 425, Flotigam® 2835-2L and to a lesser extent DDA produced overflow while MIBC and Flotigam® EDA did not. In blends with frother overflow increased except with Flotigam® EDA. Mechanisms are briefly explored. The principal benefit of blending identified is the elimination of coalescence if residual concentration of the two commercial amines is below ca. 10 ppm.

Radon progeny have been a health and safety concern for miners since the mining of radioactive minerals began. Through the ?nuclear age?, it has become better understood and the regulations have become more robust. Ventilation and control practices have improved, thus reducing miners? exposures. This paper provides an overview of radon in mining, the progress of the regulations, and discusses some of the uranium miner studies that contributed to the knowledge of the pathology of radon.

Under the requirement to define the economic advantages of using hydrogen fuelcell vehicles, a broadscoped project was initiated to quantify the costs associated with operating fuelcell vehicles and diesel vehicles. While ventilation savings are clearly an advantage for the former, a complete and detailed analysis of this and other operational and capital cost elements was undertaken in order to provide the mining industry with factual information in considering the changeover from one technology to another. This article outlines the results of the investigations to date defining the costs/benefits associated with: capital purchases, operations (electrical/diesel, mine air heating fuel, ventilation, openings, surface and underground infrastructure, maintenance, labour, etc.), delivery of energy, regulatory obligations, and mine production. Considerations are given to the type and size of a mining operation, the depth, and location in North America. Significant ventilation power, equipment and infrastructure savings are possible with the application of fuelcells for shallower mine applications. At depth, where heat is an issue, there is a reduction in benefit. Specific qualifiers such as minimum air velocities, dust dilution, shaft and heating system velocity limits must be considered on an individual mine basis. While the capital cost for fuelcell mining equipment is currently higher than diesel versions, the high cost of fuelcells is anticipated to be reduced significantly in the near future with the intensification of manufacturing. In either case the operational savings would probably be sufficient to balance the supplementary capitalization costs. A comprehensive cost-benefit report will be issued in the near future.

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have found their applications in the modelling of unit operations of mineral processing plants. In this research, laboratory-scale tests were conducted, using a three-inch diameter Mozley hydrocyclone. Main parameters included pressure drop at inlet, solid per cent, vortex and apex diameter were adjusted. The corrected cut size (d50c) and the flow rates of underflow and overflow were determined. Multi layers perceptron (MLP) feed forward network architectures were designed to predict the responses. The results showed a good correlation between experimental and network output, for corrected cut size and flow rates. Solid state galvanic cell with CaF2 as the electrolyte was employed for determining the thermodynamic properties of Nb-Al binary alloys in the temperature range of 973-1073 K. The activities and activity coefficients of Al in NbAl3 were determined. The experimental procedure and the design and construction of the experimental setup have been also explained in detail. Aluminum activity in NbAl3 increased with increase in temperature and shows a strong negative deviation from ideality. The activities of aluminum in NbAl3 were determined to be 0.0165 and 0.0289 at 973 and 1073 K respectively. The stability of NbAl3 has been compared with other available intermetallic systems.

This paper presents a resume of the likely profitable mining areas in New Zealand. It covers the main 'minerals' û gold, coal, oil and gas, ironsands, silica sands, clays, lump silica, perlite, sulphur and limestone. The potential mining projects are depicted on a map of New Zealand together with the associated works involved in hydro-electric and geothermal power development requirement for industries such as aluminium, nickel ferro-silicon or silicon carbide production. The political need for mining development to relieve unemployment and reverse emigration is stressed. A case is made for exploration and development assistance by government in labour re-training, energy supply and transportation, if the tremendous losses through lack of use of human and industrial resources are to be rapidly reduced. These losses are currently estimated at $10 000 000 000 per year. The need for protection of the sanctity of contract and security of tenure of all mining operations is touched on briefly as is the need for a reasonably balanced view on conservation. However, as both of these are more properly covered in papers on the legal and environmental aspects of the mining climate, they are presented here only as they affect the economy of the mining operation. Finally, there is a brief comment on the mining climate in New Zealand relative to Australia and South Pacific mining operations.

"The results and methodology for the optimisation of the zinc flotation circuit at the Matagami Mill using the 6-Sigma methodology are shown in detail while only the base line and final results are presented for the copper circuit. As a result of the six sigma project, the zinc concentrate grade was improved by 2% and the zinc recovery by 3%, with reduced dosage of reagents while the copper concentrate was improved by 2.4%. The process variation in the zinc concentrate grade and recovery was also reduced by over 50%. The main factors contributing to the project success were identified to be improvement in the plant measurement systems, an internal benchmarking exercise and statistically designed laboratory and in plant tests to guide the process improvement. The annual value to Noranda resulting from this project has been estimated at approximately $5 million.INTRODUCTIONThe Matagami concentrator started ore processing from the new Bell- Allard deposit in July 1999. Concentrator performance (grade and recovery of zinc and copper concentrates) was highly variable and work was ongoing to fix the sources of variation. In the mean time, Noranda embarked on its 6-Sigma initiative across the company. The 6-Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control) methodology was used in the two flotation circuits to reduce variation and improve performance. The statistical 6-Sigma methodology moves towards identifying and controlling critical process operating variables (the X' s) to achieve customerspecified performance (the Y's). The goal of the methodology is to describe a process in a numerical equation known as the transfer function, given as Y = f (XI, X2, X3.. .), where Y could be concentrate grade or recovery and examples of X's are reagent dosage, particle size, etc. With the transfer function, optimal operating conditions and control tolerances are established for the key X's to ensure the desired Y performance is obtained.Each phase of the 6-Sigma methodology is explained below with examples from the Matagami project."

Accurate positioning information is a central step in the process of increasing automation and digitalization in the mining industry. Underground mine environments are prime examples for GNSS-denied environments that pose several additional challenges for the employed indoor positioning system (IPS). This work presents an ultra-wideband (UWB)–based system specifically tailored for underground mine environments. Initially, the UWB technology is reviewed and basic concepts of IPS are explained. Both software and hardware are described in detail, including positioning algorithms, electrical circuitry, and the mining-compatible enclosure. Finally, the results from field tests in an underground mine are presented and positioning performance and the influence of dilution of precision (DOP) on positioning results are empirically evaluated. The results show that the localization errors are mostly below 1 m. Individual zones of high localization errors are suspected to be caused by noise interference. Significant DOP influence due to the mining drift geometry can be confirmed. The system shows promising localization results for different mining applications, while influences negatively impacting the accuracy are presented as items for future research.

As part of its risk management plan, the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority (RWA) is assessing the condition of its system of raw water conveyance tunnels and connecting pipelines. In 2006, the RWA inspected one of the system?s main tunnels, a 4-mi, 1950s-era tunnel that had not been inspected since its construction. The inspection team prepared extensively for the unknown conditions in the tunnel, and the inspection was completed safely and successfully. This paper describes the team?s pre-entry preparations, dewatering and ventilation efforts, surface-to-tunnel communication, access, physical inspection of the tunnel, and the lessons learned throughout the process. Additionally, this paper will preview planning for the subsequent inspections.
