"History can provide many answers with regard to what today’s mining industry looks like and how we got to where we are today. It has always been self-evident that safety has to be given the highest priority and, throughout history, many mine workers have been injured, become ill and have even sacrificed their lives due to the way in which attempts have been made to extract the ore, often due to ignorance of the dangers being faced. In more recent stages of history we have seen certain dangers being compensated by means of higher wages and bonus systems in order to have the work carried out: one example of this is when the rock heating method was employed and the men who first went underground to put out the fires that were burning, were paid extra. The working conditions, to which these people were exposed, with smoke-filled closed spaces, shortened their life expectancy considerably and today we can ask ourselves whether it is really possible to value these efforts just by higher wages. In all mines worldwide the working environment has been improved and many mining companies have a zero vision where work-related injuries and accidents are concerned. Despite this, incidents of varying severity still occur and a continuous improvement process and ongoing training is necessary in order to constantly minimise risks and improve the working environment. Atlas Copco takes this into account in all its development and we not only review our own production units but also the needs of our customers, with regard to the machinery that is produced in order to cater for customers’ safety and production objectives. Underground mining probably started at the beginning of the 11th century when people with modest tools tried to extract ores that were present in the bedrock. Methodology has developed enormously over the years with a strong focus on increased efficiency and higher production. In different parts of the world the development is driven forwards at different rates depending on which controlling factors are regarded as necessary. Political decisions, profit goals and productivity have partly controlled the development, but the greatest factor where improvement is concerned still remains with increased understanding of the totality. During more than 1000 years since underground mining has been conducted, all individuals at all levels have constantly improved their expertise and the human element has been of great importance with regard to the development that has been made, even though technology often occupies a leading role when we describe the improvements made."

This paper presents the trends in deep foundations in Europe, both in terms of design and construction. Eurocode 7 which is a design code for geotechnical engineering will be introduced in the European Union member countries, and will oblige geotechnical engineers to abandon traditional methods based on a global factor and adopt a new approach based on partial factors of safety. Execution codes (for construction of foundations and other geotechnical processes) are currently being introduced without problems. Ever more demanding environmental constraints push foundation contractors to adapt old techniques and develop new ones to comply with new regulations.

A series of tests were performed to determine the flammability limits of mixtures of oxygen, ammonia, steam and nitrogen, over a solution, in a sealed autoclave. The partial pressures of ammonia and oxygen in the vapour space were varied by adjusting the character of the solution and by adjusting the oxygen concentration in the oxidant gas respectively. The data shows that flammable conditions can be minimized by controlling the operating temperature, reducing the ammonia content in the solution, increasing the concentrations of Ni, Cu and Zn in solution and keeping the % oxygen in the gas phase less than 15.5. Observations were also made that suggest that the presence of an aerosol in the vapour space may hinder ignition.

Centrifugal model embankments with varying geometries and materials were constructed of- coal waste material, accelerated From 100 to 120 times earth's gravity, and subjected to various throughflow rates until failure occurred. Complementary laboratory tests were performed on the waste materials to obtain strength and permeability parameters for analytical calculations to predict observed centrifugal model behavior. Failures in the form of deep.-seated failure, or erosion and sediment transport or a combination of both, occurred in model embankments with 1V:1-1/2H and 1V:2H slopes when the phreatic surface due to seepage exited on the downstream slope: Positive seepage control, i.e., a toe drain successfully prevented sloughing and failures. Slope stability analyses agreed well, albeit conservatively, with observed model performance. Factors of safety ranged from 0.7 to 1.02 at the instant of failure for models with retrogressing slips as compared with 1.05 to 1.7 for stable embankments, These models verified existing criteria of a minimum safety factor of 1 3 and the necessity of positive seepage control.

Corrosion and abrasion properties of a series of chromium-containing cast iron balls with Cr contents ranging from 0 to 29% was evaluated and compared with austenitic stainless steel and mild steel balls. Marked ball wear tests were performed on artificial ore samples consisting of 95% quartzite with either 5% pyrrhotite or 5% chalcopyrite under a nitrogen or oxygen atmosphere. The electrochemical mechanism was investigated by correlating the corrosive wear with the corrosion currents obtained from potentiodynamic polarization curves under abrasion. An offset in their electrochemical activities was observed somewhere between 16 and 26% Cr. In fact, 26 and 29% Cr cast irons showed an excellent corrosion resistance approaching that of austenitic stainless steel. Flotation recoveries were estimated on a 95% quartzite + 5% pyrrhotite sample ground with various cast iron ball materials under an oxygen or nitrogen atmosphere. Electrochemical results are found to be in good agreement with corrosive wear obtained from marked ball wear test and with flotation results.

This report describes the work performed by Mine Research Company in developing a prototype mobile roof shield during 1971-1972 for the U. S. Bureau of Mines, along with background information leading to the design decisions adopted for the project. In addition, the report evaluates the choice of design and analysis and the results of the project in terms of future possibilities of mobile roof support systems. The report begins with the discussion of the problems of designing, building, and using mechanical and hydraulic roof support in coal mines. It then gives a historical summary of past work with discussions of the design choices made for previous roof support systems.

Las especies minerales son los sujetos del quehacer metalúrgico -en tanto, el diseño, la optimización operativa y el monitoreo periódico de una planta de tratamiento requieren de un adecuado conocimiento de las características de los minerales involucrados. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala las particularidades de los minerales (tamaño de grano, composición porcentual y grado de liberación) y su determinación cuantitativa a través de técnicas que ostentan sofisticación, donde la primera característica no se determina mediante técnicas no microscópicas, mientras que las dos últimas son factibles de establecer mediante la microscopía óptica, utilizando la metodología desarrollada por uno de los autores. Dicha metodología es compatible con el entorno instrumental y tecnológico de la mediana y pequeña minería, aunque puede ser utilizada con igual beneficio por la gran minería. Asimismo se presenta dos ejemplos actuales de cómo la aplicación de estudios microscópicos al proceso metalúrgico que se utiliza en la mina Atacocha, un yacimiento polimetálico ubicado en los Andes centrales del Perú, se desarrolla exitosamente en la optimización del proceso.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, under a Memorandum of Agreement with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), established design criteria for a facility to field residues from municipal waste combustion. This facility, which is available to potential users on a cost-sharing basis, is also applicable to a variety of inorganic waste materials from smelting or melting operations. The design consists of a mechanical feed handling system, electric arc melting furnace, fume-off gas handling system, and thermal oxidizer for final off gas treatment. Screw conveyors and a bucket elevator deliver up to 2,000 Ib/h of minus I-in material to a three-phase electric arc melting furnace. This unique 800-kVe A furnace has a water-cooled shell and roof to minimize interaction of the melt with the refractory lining. The volume of the hearth below the slag taphole is approximately 1.2 st of steel. The furnace is sealed, allowing atmosphere control within the furnace and fume duct by nitrogen or inert gas injection. A jet-pulsed baghouse removes particulate from the off gas and serves as an acid gas scrubber. The clean off gas is heated to 1,800' F for 1 s in a propane-fired thermal oxidizer before being vented to the atmosphere.

"INTRODUCTION The Denver region coal field, covering an area of approximately 7,640 square miles, extends from the Wyoming State line to the middle of El Paso County, Colo. The coal in this region is subbituminous in rank. Much of it is used as domestic fuel. During the last decade the production of coal in this field has remained fairly constant at an average of 2,600,000 tons per year. This production has come from 50 to 60 mines, 88 to 90 percent of the production being from the section of the field north of Denver.According to the Standard Specifications for Classification of Coal by Bank of the American Society for Testing Materials 4/ the coals in this region are classified in the Subbituminous B and C group. On the as—mined basis, they contain about 22 percent moisture and average 9,600 B.t.u. per pound. They are noncoking and slack to a variable extent when exposed to the weather. This is characteristic of subbituminous coals."

THE BUREAU OF MINES was established in the public interest to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to promote health and safety in the mineral industries; to conserve mineral resources and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increase efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting these industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to "disseminate information concerning these subjects 'in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.'" In accordance with that directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-Bureau sources. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue describes Bureau reports and articles published during the period January 1, 1960 to December 31, 1964. It, supplements the 50-year list of Bureau publications issued from July 1, 1910, to January 1, 1960,2 and the 50-year list of articles by Bureau authors published outside the Bureau from July 1, 1910, to January 1, 1960.3 It supersedes the annual lists of Bureau publications and articles from January 1 to December 31, 1960,4 from January 1 to December 31, 1961,5 from January 1 to December 31, 1962,6 and from January 1 to December 31, 1963.7 The leading general and technical libraries of the United States maintain files of the Bureau's publications. The present communication records the results of a research investigation conducted in the Porcupine Gold Mines in Timmins, Onto. Soon after silicosis became a compansable disease in Ontario under the Workmen's Compensation Act in 1926, the attention of mine operators and physicians was drawn sharply to the prevalence and importance of this condition in the mining industry. A number of examining centres were established in Northern Ontario by the Workmen's Compensation Board, and the yearly X-ray examination of miners was made compulsory.Although working conditions were soon improved, the mining industry realized that they were confronted by a problem demanding basic research for its final solution. The late Sir Frederick Banting had, for a number of years, been interested in silicosis, and it was upon his suggestion that an experimental investigation was undertaken at the McIntyre-Porcupine Mines Ltd., Schumacher, Ont., in November, 1932. A preliminary report of this investigation was published in 1937 by Denny, Robson and Irwin and a further report by the same authors in 1939.Accepting the theory that silica exerts its injurious effect upon animal tissue through a slow transformation into silicic acid in the presence of body fluids; these authors assumed that if the solubility of the silicious material retained in the lung could be sufficiently reduced, the usual fibrotic response would be modified or would not occur. A search was therefore undertaken for some non-toxic compound that would fulfil this purpose. After investigating ma:qy substances, Denny and Robson discovered in 1936 that the presence of small amounts of aluminum powder almost completely inhibited the solubility of silicious material in vitro. An intensive study of the mechanism involved later showed that the reduction in solubility was due chiefly to a coating of the silica particle with a thin film of a gelatinous hydrated alumina which on drying formed the crystalline alpha aluminum monohydrate boehmite (AI203.H20). The presence of this absorbed layer on the surface of the quartz was indicated by -staining it with aurin (ammonium salt of aurin tricarboxylic acid) and proved by Germer and Storks by means of electron diffraction patterns.Inhalation experiments with animals were at once begun, using pure quartz dust with and without aluminum powder. In March 2002 Newcrest Mining Ltd commissioned a 4 Mtpa gold-copper concentrator at its Cadia Valley Operations in New South Wales. This paper presents the design and construction considerations, commissioning and ramp up issues related to start up of the concentrator as well as current performance and future expansion plans. Commissioning of the plant was the culmination of six years of project planning, from discovery of the resource during the Cadia Hill drill out campaign in November 1996 to project implementation and plant operation. Current resource estimates stand at around 50 Mt with an average grade of 2.4 g/t gold and 0.8 per cent copper. At current processing rates the project life is expected to exceed ten years. The processing plant comprises a 9.75 m (32 ft) diameter Fully Autogenous (AG) mill, a single 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter ball mill, pebble crushers, gravity gold recovery circuit and flotation plant. Upgrades to the existing infrastructure and manning requirements at Cadia will be discussed as well as the resultant impacts on operating costs for the operation. The processing plant was expected to deliver 290 000 ounces of gold and 30 000 tonnes of copper in concentrate in its first full year of operation and progress against that goal will be presented.

"Column flotation circuit engineering has matured to a good level of understanding regarding testing, scale-up and design. Some of the factors important to the process of implementing columns are addressed in this paper, highlighting the following issues• operating bias and the maximum achievable solids carrying rate for a column application.• internal circulating loads of full scale and pilot plant flotation columns• short-circuiting oflarge scale columns and the impact on separation selectivity• the number of stages in a column circuit and the impact on selectivity.The paper uses several case studies, from pilot plant to full scale implementation, to illustrate these design issues.1. IntroductionTen years ago, in 1984, there were very few column flotation installations world wide and the largest columns were about I . 5 to 2 m diameter or square. During the following decade there have been in the heighbourhood of 80 column installations that have been successful and profitable, as both retrofits and green-fields plants. Now, columns as large as 3 to 4 m are not uncommon. Examples of installations with many large columns include Escondida, with ten columns each at 4 m square, and P T Freeport Indonesia, with 21 columns: nine 3 m diameter columns, four 2.4 m diameter columns and, starting up in April I 995, eight 3.6 m diameter columns.During this growth period there have also been column installations that can be considered as failures. In the majority of these cases, the reason for their failure has been an insufficient installed capacity for applications where there is a high weight recovery of solids to the froth product These include zinc cleaning, copper cleaning and iron ore flotation (silica flotation from a feed that is 15 to 30 %Si02) An application with high weight recovery to the froth product makes column scale-up and circuit design more complicated. This is particularly so if a high degree of selectivity is also required while attaining a high weight recovery, which can happen with iron ore flotation in columns."

"In mineral exploration and mining applications, it is sometimes necessary to reduce sampling error in order to improve representivity of individual sample assays. Historic efforts to reduce sampling error have relied on the belief that larger samples exhibit less sampling error. Justifications for this belief traditionally have coupled the binomial theorem with an ideal geological material consisting of ore and gangue particles of equal size and shape (an equant grain model) and empirical tests of geological materials, to illustrate an inverse relationship between sample size and sampling variance. To date, no proof exists of this sample size-sampling variance relationship in real geological materials exhibiting variations in grain size, shape, composition, and degree of liberation.Using first principles calculus and the formula for the mean, sample mass and sampling variance are proven to be inversely proportional in all geological materials. Distribution assumptions and physically ideal geological models are not used in this proof. Furthermore, algebraic manipulations of expressions describing the variances of equant grain models consistent with binomial, hypergeometric, and Poisson distributions reveal that these models also exhibit an inverse sample size-sampling variance relationship. Thus, the sampling behaviors of these models are numerically consistent with the sampling behaviors of real geological materials, and these models can be used to estimate sampling errors in real geological materials using simple sampling parameters."

The Nena high sulphidation-type copper-gold deposit is composed of andesitic pyroclastic units with minor interstratified lava flows. Epiclastic sandstone and conglomerate, and siliciclastic rocks consisting of mudstone, shale, lithic and bioclastic sandstone and conglomerate are locally present. Pre-mineral diorite intruded and domed the volcano-siliciclastic sequence. Economic copper-gold is hosted by vuggy quartz altered lapilli tuff and tuff breccia. The early hydrothermal alteration stage involved deposition of epithermal banded quartz and chalcedonic silica in localised environments. This alteration stage was locally superimposed by a hydrothermal breccia event. Following the breccia event, magmatically-derived volatiles were channelled through a NW striking dilational fault zone and generated the high sulphidation alteration. The high sulphidation alteration is zoned from a vuggy quartz core with local massive replacement silica through a broad pyritic quartz-alunite halo and finally to a thin illite-smectite zone. This is surrounded by regional chlorite-epidote-smectite alteration. A gangue mineral phase consisting of quartz, alunite and baryte overprinted the zoned high sulphidation alteration and preceded the main copper-gold-arsenic mineralisation. Early sulphide deposition is characterised by marcasite, arsenical pyrite and melnicovenite. Main-stage copper-gold mineralisation involved sequential deposition of hypogene bladed covellite+chalcocite, enargite-luzonite and luzonite+stibioluzonite respectively. The copper sulphides are zoned from bladed covellite-chalcocite in the north (cross-sections 5000 - 5600 N) through enargite-luzonite (cross-sections 4700 - 5000 N) and to luzonite????stibioluzonite in the south (cross-sections 4400 - 4700 N). A late phase of minor acicular covellite and enargite+luzonite overprinted the zoned copper sulphides and associated gold mineralisation. Gold mineralisation commenced at the transition from enargite to luzonite, and continued through the deposition of luzonite-stibioluzonite in both stages. Most gold was deposited during the main-stage mineralisation. Yellow native sulphur was deposited in the remaining vugs and defines the waning stage of the hydrothermal system. Post-mineral dioritic intrusives and feldspar porphyries intruded the volcano-siliciclastic sequence. Finally, supergene chemical processes with associated erosion and uplift generated a 40 - 50 m thick oxide-hosted gold cap. The oxide gold cap is underlain by a 35 - 45 m thick blanket of supergene chalcocite+covellite mineralisation which overlies and occurs throughout the main hypogene copper-gold zone. Supergene gold is related to the distribution of primary gold-bearing sulphides. Therefore, remobilisation and redeposition of gold are considered to be insignificant and very localised.

Introduction Most high purity silica is produced from crystalline quartz, generally from sand. However, there is a small area of southern Illinois where a porous, friable white chert rock is found that is very different in physical form from quartz sand. This microcrystalline material, commonly referred to as tripoli, is more easily ground to micron sizes than sand. Although of similar Moh's hardness, microcrystalline tripoli is less abrasive than either ground quartz sand or many synthetic abrasives. Location The southwestern corner of Illinois is underlain by extensive deposits of very porous chert; in some places the material is quite white. Two companies, Illinois Minerals Co. and Tammsco Inc., mine and process this white material. The Illinois Minerals plant is located at Elco, and the Tammsco plant is in Tamms, IL. Both companies mine from various locations within a 10-mile truck haul of their plants. Production from this district has been continuous since at least 1915. Malvern Minerals Co. mines and processes a generally similar microcrystalline, friable novaculite near Hot Springs, AR. Geology The southern Illinois white tripoli area is on the southern flank of the Illinois Basin. The commercial silica zone is a facies of the Clear Creek chert of Lower Devonian Age. To the north, where it occurs deep in the basin, the Clear Creek is a siliceous limestone. In the mining area, thin overburden has allowed access by surface ground water, which has leached away the carbonate content and left a quite pure silica residue. Fossils characteristic of sea bottom deposition, such as brachiopods and trilobites, are occasionally encountered in mining. The structure of the mining area is poorly known, due to infrequent outcrops. Strata in most mines are inclined at dips of 5° to 20°. There appear to be occasional high angle normal and reverse faults, but these are seldom of any significance in mining. The friable white silica zone mined in the Clear Creek chert is overlain by dark brownish-red chert and siliceous shale. Exploration drilling to date has not encountered the base of the microcrystalline tripolitic zone. Chemical content Leaching by ground water solution has removed virtually all the carbonate from the original siliceous limestone. Impurities encountered are red to yellow iron oxides, aluminous clays, and occasional black manganese oxides. The silica has no detectable formula water. A typical chemical analysis and physical properties are listed in Tables 1 and 2. Mineralogy and crystallinity Southern Illinois friable tripoli appears amorphous under the polarizing microscope. No crystal structure and only occasional, vague, patchy anisotropism is evident. However, the material gives an excellent quartz X-ray diffraction pattern. Numerous studies conducted in the 1960's and 1970's concluded or implied (1) that a high accident rate in terms of severity and frequency exists among new (first year) operators of mine machinery equipment, and (2) that lack of experience and training is a major cause of this high accident rate. Further studies refined this premise to show that the major causes of accidents among first year operators are: (1) lack of manipulative skills; (2) failure to follow/adhere to routine procedures; and (3) failure to recognize and respond properly to hazards. This report describes the design, development, and manufacture of a shuttle car operator training system, including a program of instruction which: ? Is economically feasible. ? Addresses accident data and specific causes of accidents. ? Includes an aerospace quality simulator of sufficient fidelity to teach and develop manipulative skills, recognition of and response to hazards, and routine and emergency procedures. ? Is designed to significantly reduce the severity and frequency of accidents especially during the operator's first year. ? Is designed to significantly improve the performance of the trainee as compared to the standard learning curve. Development of the simulator produced several valuable by-products including a major state-of-the-art technological advance in visual systems for simulators, and a first-time application of (certain) advanced filming techniques to underground filming.
