Geological hazards such as faulting, basement ridges, and zones of "thin" (< 6 m) coal have a major impact on mining economics of underground operations in Huntly Coalfield. Experience has shown that drillhole-based investigations do not yield sufficiently detailed models of the coal seam to allow management of the planning risks associated with these hazards. Consequently, operational performance is affected by unplanned costs associated with lower productivity, loss of coal reserves, and expensive strata control remedies in problem ground conditions. Huntly Coalfield is a challenging environment for acquisition of good quality seismic reflection data due to the very thick (10-85m) weathering layer. Since 1994, successful acquisition of 2D and 3D data has been achieved through a combination of careful testing of technical parameters and experimental trials prior to committing to production recording. High resolution seismic reflection (HRSR) is proving to be an investigations technique which generates accurate and reliable models of the coal seam and associated structures, such as normal faults and topography of the surface on which the coal seam rests. The HRSR technique has been applied and developed in the Okowhao Sector where Huntly East Mine is developing and extracting coal reserves. Results of a recent 3D survey demonstrate that this technique is capable of revolutionising risk management in mine planning for underground mines in structurally complicated coal deposits.

In the present work, a reduction roasting experimental study of Greek nickeliferous laterite samples with a gaseous reducing mixture ? CO:N2- is presented. The effect of parameters such as temperature, ore grain size, and composition of the reducing mixture were examined. It is deduced that the reducibility of intermediate type laterite sample, where iron appears mainly in the form of goethite (a-FeOOH), is considerably higher than that of limonitic type laterite samples, where hematite (a-Fe2O3) is the predominant iron mineral phase. The degree of reduction of the limonitic type laterite samples does not exceed 50%, while it reaches 95% in the case of the intermediate-type laterite sample under the same experimental conditions. Increasing the temperature in the range 750-900°C does not considerably favor the reduction of the limonitic type laterites, whereas decrease of ore grain size of the limonitic-type ore samples and more intense reducing conditions increase the reduction. The considerably higher specific surface area values of the intermediate laterite samples, diminishes the effect of the ore grain size and this can be regarded as the critical parameter leading to the higher reducibility of this ore.

The measurement of near-field shock has always been an attractive proposition for those working in the field of explosive and blast performance. The most commonly employed technique involves the use of piezoelectric accelerometers. Although highly effective, these complicated devices are relatively expensive and are often destroyed in the blast event. This paper describes the development and field-testing of a shock sensor of sufficiently low cost to enable it to be routinely used in product blasting. This new device is based on piezoelectric wafer technology and does not require any external signal conditioning. The device is housed in a small cylindrical package with approximate dimensions of 30mm (1.2”) length and 5mm (0.2”) diameter. It has been determined that the most effective way of fixing the device to rock is in a small diameter hole with epoxy glue. Alternatively the sensor can be simply placed in holes filled with either water or bulk emulsion explosive.

Formation of gold-bearing veins in Otago Schist was intimately linked to the structural evolution of the schist belt. The currently-exploited Macraes gold deposit formed in a regional scale shear zone during latemetamorphic uplift of the schist belt. Further exploration for this type of deposit will be facilitated by an increased understanding of the late-metamorphic structural evolution of the schist belt. To this end, a three-dimensional cross section through the Otago Schist has been drawn using structural data gathered at outcrops in a 20 - 40 km wide transect across central Otago. This is the first continuous detailed structural section to be drawn through the belt. The section spans an area from Textural Zone 1 metagreywacke of the Torlesse terrane in the northeast through TZ 4 schist in the central region and across the Caples-Torlesse boundary to Textural Zone 3 schist of the Caples terrane in the southwest. Two different late-metamorphic structural generations are identified in this section: the long-recognised Manorburn Generation, and a new æPoolburn GenerationÆ. The location of the Caples-Torlesse boundary has been refined on this transect by field mapping combined with whole rock geochemistry.

In Northland, New Zealand, localised large deposits of halloysite clay have been produced by in-situ alteration of rhyolite volcanics of Pliocene or Pleistocene age, which were erupted through pre-Pliocene sedimentary strata and locally through Pleistocene basalt; and which were subsequently onlapped by further basalt flows. Alteration to clay has been a result of both hydrothermal and of meteoric processes, and decreases in intensity of alteration with increasing depth. The raw material is crushed and fractionated to produce a product of less than two micron particle size, which is of exceptional whiteness and brightness. The unique properties of the clays render them highly desirable for specialised ceramic purposes.

Success of the Gold Line Eastside Ex-tension rail tunnels in Los Angeles, CA has prompted the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority?s (Metro) planning new rail lines to include underground alternatives. The Westside Extension Transit Corridor alternatives include up to 27 km (17 miles) of subway to be constructed in soft ground. The routes will require construction in Los Angeles? ?potential methane zone,? which was not considered for subway construction until recently. Slurry face tunnel boring machines (TBM) will likely be specified.

The Gualcamayo Mine is located in the Andes Mountains north of San Juan, Argentina (Figure 1). A property of Yamana Gold Inc, it declared commercial production in July 2009 and has a total mineral reserve and resource base of approximately 88,000 kg of gold. Crushing operations for the open-pit mine are located in a 13,500 m3 underground cavern with a ceiling height of 22 m. More than 3,600 m of tunnels are used to access the cavern and convey the ore. The Project as described in this paper relates to the design and construction of the Main Cavern, Conveyor System Exit Tunnel, the Mechanical System Access Tunnels, and two 4.20 m diameter shafts (Ore Pass #1 and Ore Pass #2) as shown in Figure 2. [ ] Preliminary engineering for the Project was performed by Hatch Chile. Rizzo Associates Argentina, S.A., a division of Paul C. Rizzo Associates, Inc (Rizzo) was contracted to provide geomechanical and geotechnical support for the construction of the access tunnel system and geomechanical design and construction supervision for the cavern and shafts.

It is estimated that well over 20 million lb of chromium and 8 million lb of nickel, plus other metal values, are diverted annually to furnace dusts, mill scale, and contaminated swarfs in the domestic stainless and other specialty steelmaking industry. Little inroad has been made toward the in-plant recycling of these wastes to reclaim the metal values. The Bureau of Mines has devised a process for recovering about 90 pct of the chromium and molybdenum and well over 90 pct of the nickel and iron from stainless steelmaking furnace dusts, swarf, and mill scale. Other metals such as manganese are also recovered. Initial laboratory results were confirmed and expanded to include a wide variation of stainless steelmaking waste mixtures. Later experiments have included specialty steelmaking wastes other than from stainless steelmaking. Significantly, the ease of technology transfer has been demonstrated by a number of industrial-sized (19-ton) commercial electric furnace heats, in which the pelletized wastes represented some 10 to 20 pct of the furnace charge, replacing part of the normal scrap charge. Results of these successful large-scale trials are presented. Some information is also presented on incorporation into the pellets of chromium-bearing particulate wastes originating from other than steelmaking production. Cost evaluation indicates the process is economically attractive.

The paper reports on a vacation work project conducted at Khuseleka No. 1 Shaft, Anglo Platinum, where there was a need to optimize the transport of personnel to level 15 and below. Approximately 900 men per hour need to travel between the shaft and the start of the current chairlift system. Time studies were used as the major indicator of the extent of the current problem, and it is recommended that a new chairlift system be installed to cover the distance from the vertical shaft station at level 15 to the chairlift decline station on level 15. A capital cost of approximately R10 million is necessary to carry out the proposed recommendation. Khuseleka No. 1 Shaft has the capacity to wind 1070 people per hour, and the current labour complement going to the level 15 shaft station stands at 1570 employees; thus at optimum efficiency the proposed chairlift system could transport the entire shift to the start of the current chairlift system in only 1 hour and 45 minutes. Reducing the distance walked at the start of the shift may also have an impact on productivity.

Virtually every coal seam in Appalachia will at some time be subject to multi-seam interaction (Wu et al, 1987). Many such problems result from seams which lie in close proximity or have split and lie within thirty feet vertically of one another. Existing techniques for multi- seam design have concentrated on conditions where the entire inner burden is not the failing member and are unsuitable for ultra-close multi-seam design. Structural integrity of the inner burden must be maintained if two superimposed seams are to be mined separately and under- standing possible failure mechanisms of the inner burden is an essential first step in the design process.

Anglo Platinum has initiated a project to investigate hydraulic hoisting technology for platinum mines. Hydraulic hoisting systems are categorized as pumping, fluidizing feeder or displacement feeder systems. Positive displacement piston diaphragm pumps are most suitable for pumping systems but they require that the ore be milled prior to pumping. Fluidizing feeders are unsuitable for platinum ore applications due to the large percentage of fines in the ore. The three-chamber pipe displacement feeder has been most widely used for hydraulic hoisting and is the most suitable technology for platinum mines. Eight hydraulic hoisting applications covering pumping and displacement feeder technologies are reviewed. The key factors to be assessed in selecting a hydraulic hoisting system for a platinum mine are discussed. A typical platinum mine configuration will comprise an ore preparation plant (to produce -15 mm material through screening or crushing), motive water pump on surface, high pressure water pipeline from surface to underground, ore slurrification plant, three-chamber displacement feeder, and a high pressure slurry pipeline to surface. The water and slurry pipelines are housed in a purpose drilled borehole. A hydraulic hoisting system selection chart is presented. A 150 mm diameter system with a 25 MPa pressure rating is required to hoist 60 000 t/m from a depth of 1 200 m. Generic capital and operating costs are presented . A major potential advantage of hydraulic hoisting is that the fines, which contain a high percentage of PGMs, are captured underground and transported directly to the concentrator. Hydraulic hoisting technology is ideally suited to providing supplementary hoisting capacity to existing shafts that have reached the skip hoisting capacity limit. The main advantage for new shafts is the potential to significantly simplify underground rock handling and transportation. All hydraulic hoisting system components are proven. The only risk area is the wear rates of the valves and piping. Current estimates are based on gold ore. The business cases investigated show that the financial viability of the installations are not sensitive to wear rate. "Control of analytical data quality is usually referred to in the mining industry as Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC), and involves the monitoring of sample quality and quantification of analytical accuracy and precision. QAQC procedures normally involve using sample duplicates and specially prepared standards whose grade is known. Numerous case studies indicate that reliable control of sample precision is achieved by using approximately 5% to 10% of field duplicates and 3% to 5% of pulp duplicates. These duplicate samples should be prepared and analyzed in the primary laboratory.Bias in the analytical results can be identified by inclusion of 3% to 5% of the standard in each sample batch. Several different standards are used, with values spanning the practical range of grades in the actual samples. A blank (a sample in which the concentration of metal of interest is below detection limit) should also be included. Standard samples alone cannot identify biases introduced during sample preparation, and therefore approximately 5% of the duplicate samples (coarse rejects and pulp) should be processed and assayed at another, external, reputable laboratory.This paper discusses techniques used for estimation of errors in precision and accuracy, and overviews diagnostic tools. It is shown that one of the most commonly used methods, the Thompson-Howarth technique, produces consistently lower results than other methods. These results reflect the nature of this method, which relies on the assumption of a normally distributed error, and thus produces biased results when errors have a skewed distribution. This study concurs with the suggestion of Stanley and Lawie (2007: Exploration and Mining Geology, v. 16, p. 265-274) to use the average coefficient of variation (CVAVR(%)) as the universal measure of relative precision error in mine geology applications: Le contrôle de la qualité des données analytiques est habituellement désigné sous l’appellation d’Assurance et Contrôle de la Qualité (ACQ), elle implique le suivi de la qualité des échan¬tillons et la quantification de la reproductibilité et la précision analytiques. There are three major components of a fully grouted roof bolt which primarily determine its ability to develop and sustain load: the steel rebar, the resin annulus, and the rock/grout interface. The untensioned, fully grouted roof bolt is subjected to loading only when the surrounding rock deforms. Vertical rock deformation is generally a result of strata sagging and bedding plane separation, whereas horizontal deformation is typically a result of bedding plane sliding. These two types of deformation create different types of internal loads with-in the roof bolt, tensile stress for vertical rock deformations and shear stress for horizontal rock deformations. Also, as a result of the mutual load transfer between the rock and bolt, shear stress will be developed along the grout/rock interface. According to the exact bolt loading conditions, different failure modes may occur: bolt axial failure, bolt shear failure, and shear failure along the grout/rock interface. Understanding these possible failure modes and their root causes is the key to eliminating roof failures in underground mines employing fully grouted resin bolts. Using ABAQUS 5.8, a finite element model was developed to simulate the components of the fully grouted bolt and its interaction with the surrounding roof strata. Several models were conducted to investigate how load transfer occurs between the rock and the bolt under different geological and mining conditions. The effects of bed-ding plane location and properties, and strata sequence on bolt stability were studied. Also, the effects of hole roughness on bolt stability were discussed. Bolt axial failure was not observed within the range of the studied parameters; however, a combination of high overburden depth, a bedding plane located at 2 to 3 ft from the roofline or a low coefficient of friction along the bedding plane caused strata sliding and shears failure in the bolt. Also, in the case of a weak immediate roof, the shear stress at the grout/rock interface could exceed its ultimate capacity lead to slippage.

Stereolithography is a well known rapid prototyping technique in the manufacturing sector. Essentially it is a three dimensional printing process that produces plastic prototype parts from standard CAD files. At present, Canadian mining companies are not fully aware of the potential of Rapid Prototyping Techniques (RPTs) for their production and mine design systems. Mining engineers and geologists attempt to visualize and understand the characteristics and layouts of orebodies on computer models and in cases where it is decided to develop physical models, the process is time consuming based on simplified constructions. Rapid prototyping techniques (RPTs) such as stereolithography can facilitate engineers and geologists to quickly and with satisfactory accuracy to visualize sections of orebodies and evaluate alternative ore extraction techniques using 3D solid models. The research discussed in this paper is carried out by the Laurentian University Mining Automation Laboratory (LUMAL) in collaboration with the Department of Mines Research of Inco Limited and the Integrated Manufacturing Technologies Institute (IMTI) of the National Research Council of Canada. The main objective with this research is to evaluate the applicability of state-of-the-art RPTs (e.g. stereolithography) to underground hard rock mining systems. RPTs can play a significant role in accelerating the design and development process of mining systems.

"Mining companies around the world are embracing geometallurgical modeling at a rapid rate, as senior executives realize that inputs must be properly measured if the output is to be managed effectively. Geometallurgical modeling is used to scientifically manage risk in project evaluation, for plant design and production forecasting, and optimization of production planning and mineral processing/metallurgical unit operations. The technology also provides a solid foundation for implementing broad corporate strategies with respect to intelligent asset utilization and metal sales. Over the past five years, MinnovEX Technologies Inc. has been actively engaged in developing, promoting and applying geometallurgical modeling technology for major mining companies around the world. This paper describes the methodology for successfully applying the technology for the unit operations of comminution and flotation in the mining industry.INTRODUCTIONGeometallurgical modeling (referred hereon as geomet modeling), in theory, can be applied to its full potential on all unit operations in mineral processing; however, this paper will concentrate on two of the largest unit operations, namely comminution and flotation, where the technology is actually being practiced by many large mining companies. For concept studies and prefeasibility studies, aspects of geometallurgical technology are regularly applied but in a less rigorous manner than for final feasibility studies where justification for funds is sought. This paper will focus on the final feasibility stage of a project and on existing operations or planned expansions, where the full power of geometallurgical technology is brought to bear in a cost effective manner.One of the unique aspects of geomet modeling, when used to its potential, is the ability to design plants, and forecast and plan production with a quantifiable degree of precision, something that was unattainable in the past. This means that when new comminution and flotation plants are designed, the mining companies and financial institutions involved in the project can measure the precision of the design and therefore better understand and manage project risk. It means that for existing and new operations, metal sales personnel can carry out their sales strategies with a much better understanding of the degree of error associated with production forecasts of concentrate/metal and quality of concentrates. For mine and mill managers, geomet modeling allows the effect of the mine plan on the downstream processes to be quantified; thereby allowing the mine plan to be recast in a more optimized manner. Finally, existing concentrator personnel can optimize their unit operations based on a more definitive understanding"

Close economic cooperation was established among the countries in western Europe during the seventies. As a consequence, among others, a need for harmonized technical specifications for civil engineering works arose. Technical specifications for design and execution of building and civil engineering structures exist in most of the European countries. In some countries such technical specifications are part of the building regulations and in other they are independent codes of practice and standards. The works on the Eurocodes was initiated by the Commission of the European Communities about 1976. The Eurocodes are intended as common unified design codes for different load bearing structures constructed from different materials. They are also intended to cover design of geotechnical structures. They are established with a view to promote the free movement of goods and services within the member states of the European Community - the so called Internal Market - and within the member countries of the European Free Trade Association, EFTA by removing obstacles arising from different rules for calculation and design.

A cyclic leaching process was developed for selectively leaching and recovering cadmium from nickel-cadmium scrap battery waste. The six major steps in the process are the following: (1) washing the plates to remove KOH electrolyte, (2) roasting at 550° to 600° C to oxidize metallic cadmium and decompose cadmium and nickel salts, (3) leaching with an ammonium nitrate solution, (4) precipitation of the leached cadmium from solution as cadmium carbonate using CO2 gas, (5) removal of CO2 from the lixiviator by adjusting to pH 4.5, heating, and evacuating the system, and (6) removal of small amounts of leached nickel from the lixiviator using a solvent extraction technique. The regenerated lixiviator is then recycled to leach additional plates. Cadmium extraction was 94 percent and the cadmium carbonate product contained 0.14 percent nickel and 0.12 percent cobalt impurity. The leached plates were smelted to a high nickel-low iron alloy with no detectable amounts of cadmium.

In tectonically disturbed zones within coal seams, decreases in the amount of kaolinite in the cellular structure of inertiniterich coal are accompanied by increasing kaolinite contents in fractures within the coal and/or rocks of immediately overlying horizons. This is due to fracturing of the inertinite microstructure by tectonic disturbance and remobilization and redistribution of free, fine-grained material (kaolinite and/or inertodetrinite.) Ascending waters are believed to transport the kaolinite in suspension, and redeposit it in the fractures and pores in the overlying horizons. This removal of material from the inertinite-rich coal leads to an increase in porosity (higher free gas storage), a presumed reduction in coal strength and an apparent increased proneness to instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas.

Low-cost hydroelectric energy in the Pacific Nortnwest has been an important factor in the development of a ferroalloy industry. Eleven companies, employing approximately 1,000 persons, produce about 116,000 tons (1954-58 average) annually of ferrosilicon, ferrochromium, ferromanganese, ferrophosphorus, silicomanganese, and ferronickel. About 7,500 tons (1954-58 average) of these ferroalloys is consumed in the Pacific Northwest States of Washington and Oregon; the rest is used principally in other western and mid-western markets. In 1959, the Bureau of Mines began a study to determine the current status and to evaluate the potential of the ferroalloy industry in the Pacific Northwest. The Bureau gathered information from operating alloy plants in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana; from published materials; and from consumers of ferroalloys.
