"The Cordillera contains numerous porphyry deposits and prospects, many containing economic quantities of copper, molybdenum, gold and tungsten. Over the lost twenty years, different phases of exploration have been driven by individual commodity prices and new discoveries. Exploration methods have remained largely unchanged since the 1960s and 1970s with the range of techniques chosen for each situation depending on the stage of the program, the type of porphyry target and the local environment. Improvements or changes to techniques have resulted from awareness of specific features in new deposits or regional problems. During the last ten years much of the emphasis has been on the re-evaluation of known porphyry deposits with more exploration in areas previously recognized as prospective. Re-evaluation of known deposits has resulted in increased reserves, often with improved gold grade, and the discovery of new zones. Several new deposits have been discovered including gold-only deposits of probable porphyry affinity.Research related to porphyry deposits has followed trends in exploration and has been directed toward the type of deposits that have been of current interest. In addition to research on specific deposits and areas, general research related to porphyry deposits has addressed three broad themes. The first theme involves the role of tectonic processes and the nature of source regions. Although different in detail, recent tectonic models suggest that a tectonic change or hiatus may be important for the generation of metal-rich magmas from various source regions and subsequent fractionation that permits volatile saturation. The second theme is based on magmatic processes, particularly the generation of a volatile phase enriched in metals. This research supports the general orthomagmatic model for porphyry deposits and has helped to define the influence of specific variables in the generation of different types of porphyry deposits. Finally, research on alteration and mineralization has provided evidence for different types of fluids and fluid processes involved in the formation of porphyry deposits. These data also support the orthomagmatic model but indicate additional complexity in magmatic-hydrothermal systems including the role of external fluids. Although important advances have been made, research has had a limited impact on exploration.Exploration and research on deposits that occur in the peripheral and upper parts of porphyry systems have been important over the last ten years. Although considerable advances have been made, the relationship of different styles of peripheral mineralization to magmatic processes in the core of the system remains ambiguous. An improved understanding of the processes that generate zoning, peripheral mineralization, and the surrounding alteration envelopes would be beneficial to exploration."

In its search for a highly productive mining system for anthracite beds pitching from 100 to 200, where conventional mobile equipment cannot be used) the Bureau initiated a longwall project by introducing a shearer drum cutter loader of European origin. Because of the undulating nature of the roof and floor and changing bed thicknesses, the machine proved inflexible and extra work was required in lifting bottom coal and blasting top coal.

INTRODUCTION Tunnels are commonly constructed in the very weak St. Peter sandstone in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. Historically, core recovery in this weak sandstone was very small in the critical weaker strata resulting in little preconstruction information on the ground conditions. Improved core recovery techniques have been utilized for recent projects, allowing rock quality rating methods to be developed for the recovered core. Down-the-hole tests, and the use of combination ratings between different types of core data provide for more detailed characterization of ground conditions. THE ST. PETER SANDSTONE The 45 m thick St. Peter is an unusually pure quartz sandstone. It underlies all the Twin Cities area, except where it has been eroded by the present day Mississippi River or by pre-glacial rivers. It forms conspicuous steep bluffs along the Mississippi River where the upper Platteville limestone formation protects it from erosion. Where the Platteville formation is missing, the sandstone slopes are often more gentle. Natural case hardening of the exposed sandstone bluffs often forms a resistant crust and reduces sloughing. This case-hardened surface is not representative of the sandstone back from the bluff.

"The United States hat large reserves of titaniferous iron ores that are a potential future source of both iron and titanium. Although it is not now economically feasible to recover iron and titanium metals from these ores, they may become important in times of stress and, in some instances, already have served as a source of pigment-quality titania.The iron- and titanium-bearing constituents of the ores considered in this report are not completely separable from each other by ore-dressing methods, and chemical (or smelting) procedures must be employed. It is im¬portant, therefore, that information be available concerting their reactivities. The most important titanium-bearing constituent is ilmenite (FeTiO3), the thermodynamic properties of which were discussed in a previous publication.3/ The results of thermodynamic studies showed that both hydrogen and carbon monoxide are relatively ineffective reducing agents for the iron in limonite. On the other hand, carbon theoretically is effective at tempera¬tures above 8510C., at which. point the combined equilibrium pressures of CO and CO2 from the reactionsFeTiO3 + C = Fe+ TiO + COand200 = C+ CO2reach 1 atmosphere.This report gives results of small-scale tests of selective reduction by carbon of the iron in titaniferous iron ores, both with and without addition of sodium carbonate. It is shown that the bulk of the iron may be reduced and separated without serious reduction or loss of titanium. Three Wyoming ores, Iron Mountain, Shanton, and Taylor, wore studied. The principal factors investigated were temperature, time, carbon:ore ratio, particle size, and sodium carbon ore ratio.Two methods of investigation were employed. In the first, intimate mixtures of ore and carbon were roasted and the reduced iron and titanium evaluated by leaching with dilute sulfuric acid and analyzing the leach solution (and, in some instances, the dried residues).Twenty grams of ore were mixed thoroughly with carbon and tamped into an alundum thimble having a loosely fitting cover. The thimble and contents were placed in a test-tube end porcelain tube and heated to the desired temperature in a Globar tube furnace. The open end of the porcelain tube was connected to a bubbler containing sulfuric acid, in a manner that permitted complete shut-off of the tube when desired. This allowed removal of the tube from the furnace at the end of the roast period without exposure of the contents to the atmosphere."

The recession that took hold of the domes-tic mining industry in 1981-82 finally abated somewhat in 1987, resulting from increases in many commodity prices, especially in the metals sector, and from continuing success in lowering operating costs. By no means was the work finished; the mining industry was in a sense entering a new era. The struggle for survival was still very evident for many companies and various commodities, but increasing productivity and profits were accompanied by indications that these trends were more long term than short term. Raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1987 had an estimated value of $26.3 billion, an increase of $2.9 billion over the 1986 value. This is the fifth consecutive year that the value has increased. Except for a decrease in 1982, the value each year has increased since 1971, or 15 of 16 years. The value of raw metals production increased by an estimated 28%, an impressive improvement since the drastic fall in 1982. Industrial minerals growth was comparatively flat, with an estimated in-crease in value of 0.1 %, continuing a trend of the previous 2 years. Metal mine production dropped considerably in 1982 and maintained its resultant lower level until 1987, when production significantly recovered.

In this study the effect of solidification rate, T6 and T7 heat treatments on thermal fatigue resistance of A319 aluminum was investigated. Increasing of the solidification rate improved the thermal fatigue resistance of the alloy by refinement of the microstructure. The most sensible areas for thermal fatigue crack growth were the eutectic zones, T6 and T7 heat treatments improved the thermal fatigue resistance of the alloy by enhancing of the matrix resistance against the crack propagation. The slight reduction of the thermal fatigue resistance after T7 heat treatment is attributed to coarsening of the precipitates which reduces the matrix resistance.

The most important development in connection with the search for oil in Australia during 1940 was on the legislative side. Prior to 1939 legislative enactments in the various states with regard to prospecting for petroleum were such as to prohibit large-scale effort and to bar the major oil companies from operating. The preparation of the Wade Model Bill for the Commonwealth Government in 1939 and the acceptance of the Bill in principle by all States, has gone far to remove these obstacles. Amending Acts, largely based on the Alodel Bill, have now been passed by all States with the exception of New South Wales and Tasmania. In New South Wales an Amending Bill is being drafted, while the Govern-ment of Tasmania is preparing to introduce an Amending Bill provided there is any demand for it. Noteworthy developments followed immediately on the passing of these Amending Acts. The Shell Company (1)1 and the Superior Oil Company of California (2) too$ up large areas in Queensland and com-menced work during 1940. Caltex acquired a big tract of country in the Kimberley district of Western Australia (3) and has made application for an area in the Territory of Papua. An Australian company, The Phoenix Oil Extraction Co., has obtained a permit to prospect over an extensive area bordering the south coast of Western Australia (4). Other developments are foreshadowed. The Shell Company is making an intensive examination of its area in Queensland (I). Geological, geophysical and aerial surveys are in progress. Caltex has three geological parties in the held in Western Australia while Superior Oil Company of California has done some geological work in the interior of Queensland (2). None of these concerns envisages a drilling campaign in the near future. Much exploratory work is necessary. Further work has been done by the companies that were already operating in 1939, though an important Australian company - Oil Search—has abandoned the work of prospecting in Australia. This company has subleased its holdings, at North West Cape in Western Australia (;), to Caltex on a royalty basis. The company also maintains its holdings in, and connection with, the Australasian Petroleum Company Proprietary Limited, which is a combination of Standard Oil (New Jersey), Anglo-Iranian and Oil Search. This company is operating in the territories of Papua and New Guinea. Drilling Victoria.—Although a good deal of drilling was done in the LaBes Entrance Tertiary Basin of Victoria (7), no appreciable production of oil was obtained. In order to test the extent and possibilities of the oil-bearing sand in this region, the Commonwealth and State Governments jointly put down six scout boreholes to depths of between 1200 and I500 it. Uranium ores leached with sulphuric acid typically have poor dewatering properties. Applicability of controlled neutralization where gypsum precipitates as crystalline particles, improving dewatering properties of material was examined. Neutralized material was then dewatered using paste thickener to increase underflow density. The objectives are to maximize water recovery due to water scarcity and to produce suitable cemented paste fill material for optimizing underground ore recovery. Work was performed on acidic slurry samples collected after leaching but before the resin-in-pulp uranium recovery. Controlled neutralization greatly reduced volume of neutralization precipitates giving higher densities and improving the dewatering (filtration) properties. As a result it would be possible to increase the water recycled to the mill. Another benefit is that sulphate in the recycled water was reduced to saturation limit minimizing scaling of process equipment. Additional test work is needed; however, Unconfined Compressive Strength results imply that controlled neutralization increases the strength of paste fill and possibly offers opportunities towards a viable backfill option.

Meeting of Feb. 16, 1915.-The Committee on Membership was appointed with the following personnel: John H. Janeway, Chairman; Karl Filers, Lewis W. Francis, Louis D. Huntoon, and Thomas H. Leggett. President Saunders announced the appointment of the Committee on Increase of Membership, as shown on p. xxviii of this Bulletin. The reproduction by the anastatic process of 100 copies of Volume IX of the Institute Transactions was authorized. The sum of $50 and the exchange of the Bulletin. was awarded to the commission publishing the Annual Table of Constants. The sum of $49.07 was contributed to the expense of the John Fritz Medal Board of Award for the year 1914, and the Institute agreed in the future to share the annual expense for the John Fritz Medal Board of Award not to exceed one-quarter of $500 in the year. Upon the recommendation of the Committee on Membership, 36 Members, 1 Associate, and 13 Juniors were elected. The resignations of 26 members were accepted. L. D. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar a influência das fases sólidas e líquidas formadas na desfosforação de ferro gusa. As escórias foram feitas a bases de Cal, resíduo de mármore e carepa. Neste trabalho também foi investigada a utilização de fluorita e barrilha nas escórias produzidas, objetivando avaliar as melhores condições para o processo de desfosforação de ferro-gusa. Experimentos em escala laboratorial foram realizados com a adição das misturas desfosforantes iniciais, na forma in natura, a temperatura de 1.400ºC e de composição química conhecida. Para efeitos comparativos das adições, os experimentos foram realizados com agitação mecânica. Foram utilizados cadinhos de MgO para a fusão do ferro-gusa. Amostras do ferro-gusa foram retiradas em intervalos apropriados, para o monitoramento de sua composição química e, após o tratamento, foram obtidas amostras da escória final, sendo comparadas as composições finais as iniciais. Os resultados foram comparados com vista na análise da eficiência das escórias e no processo de desfosforação, com o uso dos programas ThermoCalc e FactSage.

Após serem usadas como isolante térmico, as lãs de vidro descartadas pelas indústrias apresentam características constitucionais propícias para a utilização como matéria-prima para a obtenção de materiais cerâmicos. A constituição deste resíduo é baseada em uma mistura de óxidos sendo SiO2 e Na2O majoritários e vários outros em menores teores que podem agir como fundentes. Dentro deste contexto, neste projeto, buscou-se caracterizar física e quimicamente o resíduo de lã de vidro através de fluorescência de raios-X, análise térmica diferencial e difração de raios-X. A partir da composição química definiu-se a formulação mais adequada a ser utilizada para obtenção de materiais vitrocerâmicos com predominância da fase neflina. Al2O3 e Na2CO3 foram utilizados para corrigir a formulação e TiO2 foi utilizado como agente nucleante. Depois de formuladas as amostras foram fundidas para obtenção dos vidros base e submetidas a tratamentos térmicos de nucleação e cristalização, os quais serão definidos por ensaios de análise térmica a serem realizadas em cada formulação para obtenção dos vitrocerâmicos propriamente ditos. Espera-se que as formulações desenvolvidas apresentem nefelina como fase cristalina majoritária.

O Terminal Integrador de Santa Luzia (TISL) recebe materiais de origem siderúrgica (fio máquina, bobinas, fardos e chapas grossas) dos clientes Arcelor Mittal Monlevade, Aperam e Usiminas por via ferroviária e os armazena até que sejam despachados para os clientes finais, por via rodoviária. O fluxo inverso (recebimento rodoviário e escoamento ferroviário) é realizado para o cliente Gerdau (tarugos e vergalhões) e para o minério da Usiminas. Os fluxos ferroviários são realizados por vagões Gôndolas, GDE e Plataformas, os quais possuem um ciclo dimensionado para o atendimento ao volume orçado anual, sendo um importante indicador de performance para o TISL, assim como o ciclo de permanência rodoviária. Inicialmente, o tempo de permanência de vagões e carretas estava muito acima da meta determinada e, com o objetivo de reduzir o tempo destes ciclos, foi desenvolvido um projeto de aumento produtividade no terminal. O projeto teve como base a implantação da cultura TPS na busca pela melhoria contínua dos processos, juntamente com a estruturação apresentada na metodologia do PCDA, resultando em grandes ganhos em produtividade.

"This research work forms part of an assessment to complement the feasibility of implementing high pressure sonic injection into relatively small (2.25 m I.D by 3.66 m I.L) Peirce-Smith converters (PSC) used at Lonmin Plc. Work has been carried out to characterize the fluid dynamics of three-phase (air, matte and slag) fluid flow in these converters using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The investigation has been done to study the flow pattern of the three phase system at high air pressure injection achieving sonic velocity at the tuyere exit into the converter. The 2-D and 3-D simulations of the three phase system were carried out using the volume of fluid (VOF) and realizable k -e turbulence models to account for the multiphase and turbulence nature of the flow, respectively. These models were implemented using the commercial CFD numerical code FLUENT. A detailed study of the flow pattern has been presented in the form of contour plots and the results obtained are useful for understanding plume extension and velocity distribution, shear wall stress distribution, and phase distribution characteristics in the system. The results provide a basis for further development of sonic injection technology into relatively small industrial Peirce-Smith converters with the ultimate objective of achieving lower energy consumption, improved process efficiency and increased throughput of the converting process. INTRODUCTIONPeirce-Smith converters (PSC) have been used in copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) making smelters for more than a century for the purpose of removing iron (Fe) and sulphur (S) chemically associated with copper-nickel mattes through exothermic oxidation reactions. This process is commonly referred to as conversion. In principle, conversion is a submerged injection process, where typically air (or oxygen enriched air), at subsonic velocity (typically < 150 m/s), is laterally blown into liquid matte (Cu-Ni-Fe-S system). Oxygen preferentially reacts with Fe and S to produce iron oxide (FeO), which is slagged off, and sulphur dioxide (SO2), which reports to the process off gas."

IN 1912 the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company made a large investment in a number of coal properties in Utah and in 1915 a subsidiary, the United States Fuel Co., was organized to take over these properties. Operations started in 1916 and the Company soon became, and remains, one of the major coal producers of the State. It now produces approximately one million tons of coal annually, which is about 22 per cent of Utah&apos;s output. The U. S. Fuel Co. owns large reserves of good coal and is in a position to expand operations with the industrial growth now taking place in the West. Traveling through the Western States, one is struck by numerous advertising signs portraying the picture of jovial Old King Cole of nursery rhyme fame. His rotund figure and beaming countenance are the symbols of Utah King Coal, the product of the King mine of U. S. Fuel Co. King Coal is a by-word of quality coal throughout all the Western States.

This publication contains analyses arid related source data for 274 natural gas samples from 20 States. Of the total samples, 269 were collected during calendar year 1985; the reminder were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received before 1986, All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. Quaternary alluvial deposits in the modern stream channel of the Agua Fria River west of Phoenix, Arizona, is mined and processed to provide aggregate to the greater Phoenix area. The alluvium occurs as three distinct, stratigraphic layers. Samples from each of the three layers were examined for gravel clast lithology, grain size distribution, and engineering tests, which revealed noteworthy differences in properties. The engineering properties of the gravels are dependent on a combination of factors including gravel clast lithology, the distance the gravel clasts have been transported from their source areas, the age of the deposits, and the degree of weathering. Knowledge of these characteristics may affect the methods that aggregate operators employ to extract and process gravel from the Agua Fria River.

In view of the necessity or increasing production of metallurgical fluorspar to satisfy wartime demands, 0, M. Bishop, former district engineer of the Bureau of Mines, L. W. Carrier and. J. S. Williams, senior geologist of the Federal Geological Survey, and E. H. Dawson, mining engineer of the War Production Board made a joint survey of the Illinois-Kentucky fluorite district in July 1942 to determine what steps should be taken to increase production. As part of their recommendations, a program for exploring the idle Klondike mine in Livingston County, Ky., was outlined. All the ore produced at the Klondike mine was mined above the 325-foot level, where some tonnage remains. Factors that influenced selection of the Klondike mine for exploration were favorable geological conditions, the state of mine development and the availability of pumping equipment and some usable mine and mill equipment. In December 1942, the Metals Reserve Co. leased the Klondike mine from the Salem Fluorspar Co.
