"INTRODUCTION Retsof mine, adjoining the village of Retsof, Livingston County, New York, is about 5 miles northwest of Geneseo and 55 miles (air-line distance) due east of Buffalo. It is a single-bed rock-salt mine having extensive horizontal workings as much as 2-1/2 miles long and 1 mile wide and has been in continuous operation since 1885. Retsof tine is the largest producing salt mine in North America and is reputed to be the largest active salt mine in the world.Retsof is one of three large salt mines operated by the International Salt Co., Scranton, Pa.; T. Forster Courthope is general manager of Retsof and also of the company's Detroit salt mine in Michigan and has held that position for 27 years. He is assisted by Stanley Martin, general superintendent; R. Goetz, Maintenance superintendent; and John Riordan, mine superin¬tendent. All are old-timers at Retsof and, according to Courthope, contri¬buted the ""lion's share in bringing the mine to its present standard of safety.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTThis circular was made possible by the generous cooperation of T. Este projeto consistiu na substituição do antigo sistema de controle com PLC’s Automax do laminador fio máquina de dois veios, mantendo-se parte do sistema antigo Automax convivendo com o novo sistema Contollogix. O novo PLC instalado para o controle do laminador foi o Rockwell ControlLogix, através do qual foi desenvolvido o controle principal do laminador, como: cascata de velocidade utilizando o fator R, que poderia ser ajustado do IHM (antes os ajustes eram feitos diretamente no rpm dos motores), controle de laços, controle das mesas de laço, as primeiras da Russula, produzidas e programadas em companhia com a Russula Itália exclusivamente para esse projeto, controle de tração, ciclos de posicionamentos manuais e automáticos, intertravamentos, etc.

The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company has been in the business of mining and exploration since its incorporation in 1906. The Company has reports written as early as 1890. Consequently, its files contain a very large number of reports, and also of maps, of ail descriptions. REPORTS Before describing the filing of maps, a brie{ note on our general system of filing reports will perhaps clarify the discussion. Reports of a non-periodic nature, primarily those based upon examinations by field engineers, are separated from all other data and filed in what we know as the Mine Series System. Each property on which reports are written is given a serial number, known as the Mine Series Number. This serial number is assigned at the time the first report is filed and it remains permanently identified with the property, regardless of its state of activity. Our mine series numbers now total over 5,000. The serial number for a property may be found by referring to an alphabetical index of properties. Evaluation of through-deck blasthole sample reliability at the Lone Tree gold mine revealed a non-systematic bias in the sampling system. Ore is primarily hosted within the Powerline fault zone. Clay gouge, present in the fault zone and typically enriched in gold content, forms agglomerates during blasthole drilling leading to a segregation error during sampling. Replicated samples split from blasthole cuttings piles show through-deck samples to be either significantly enriched or depleted by 1.5 standard deviations or more from the mean gold content of their respective cuttings pile quality of through-deck samples correlates strongly with quantity of clay present.

A evolução da microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas de dois aços inoxidáveis duplex foram estudadas via microscopia óptica e de varredura, ensaios de dureza e tração. As amostras dos aços inoxidáveis duplex foram laminadas a frio com percentual de 18,50 e 62% para o aço S32304 e 21,52 e 64% para o aço S31803. As amostras com 62 e 64% de redução foram recozidas a uma temperatura de 1055ºC com 20 s de encharque. Os resultados mostraram o efeito da deformação a frio na espessura das lamelas de ferrita e austenita, sendo este mais pronunciado na austenita. O aço inoxidável duplex S31803 apresentou maiores valores para o limite de escoamento e dureza devido ao maior percentual de molibdênio e nitrogênio, elementos que atuam como endurecedores por solução sólida.

Gold was first discovered on the Shotover by Thomas Arthur in 1862, and soon there were over 3000 miners working on the river. It has often been called the richest river in the world. Most countries probably have one of these, but it was certainly the richest in New Zealand. In the early days some miners collected as much as 200 oz/d from a sluice box, and the early river gravels must have been extremely rich before the gold bearing terrace gravels were sluiced into the river. Otago produced about 10 Moz out of the NZ total of over 30 Moz. Most of this was alluvial and possibly one third or more came from the Shotover. The extremely cold winter and danger of flooding made it a dangerous river to work. During 1863 when heavy rain melted snow in the high country, the river rose 35 ft overnight and drowned many miners camped on the banks. These hazards still exist and dominate the method of working. The early hand miners cleaned out much of the riverbed, and the advent of the hydraulic elevator enabled deeper parts of the river to be worked over. Extensive sluicing of high terraces also took place particularly around Skippers. Several companies have attempted operations on the Shotover. Many of these were distinctly unsuccessful, such as the suction dredge at Maori Point about 1930 and the Skippers Limited fluming in about 1934. At least two attempts were made to divert the river with the Sandhills cut above Skippers and the Oxenbridge Tunnel down near Arthur's Point.

"The Normetal mine is about 7 miles east of the Ontario-Quebec boundary, and 13 miles north of the town of Dupuy on the Canadian National railway. The mine workings are largely on lots 44 and 45 in the south half of range 10, Desmeloizes township.The surface outcrop is reported to have been discovered by a trapper previous to 1925, but the details are obscure. The property was originally owned by the Canadian Exploration Company of Amos, Quebec, and was later transferred to Abana Mines, Limited. The latter Company carried out underground work from two shafts down to the 550-foot level. The property was acquired by Normetal Mining Corporation in 1931 and was reopened in 1933, when development work was carried down to the 800-foot level. The mine was closed down in 1935 because metal prices did not justify production at that time. It was reopened early in 1937 and milling commenced in September of that year. To the end of 1945, a total of 1,497,- 169 tons of ore was milled from which was produced 184,533 tons of copper concentrates containing 84,738,368 lb. copper, 2,744,100 oz. silver, 26,230 oz. gold, and 153,524 tons of zinc concentrates containing 163,752,433 lb . zinc."

It is practically fifteen years since stellite was first introduced into industry, and since then the progress made in its manufacture has been so rapid and the number of successful applications so varied that it was considered a review of the more important phases would be of general interest. Stellite is a cobalt-chromium-tungsten alloy, containing approximately 2. 75 per cent carbon. The high percentage of carbon is necessary for the requisite hardness and resistance to wear at ordinary temperatures, whereas the tungsten is essential to impart hardness at a red heat. Chromium imparts hardness and strength, and cobalt renders the alloys more resistant to oxidation. The metals cobalt and chromium are completely soluble in all proportions, both in the liquid and solid state, the equilibrium diagram showing a minimum in the solubility curve at approximately 50 per cent cobalt and l,340°C. Cobalt and tungsten are completely soluble up to 40 per cent tungsten, which is beyond the limit of the; tungsten content of stellite alloys. In the presence of carbon, carbides are formed, which are essential in stellite possessing good cutting or wearing properties.

FeMn alloys are typically produced with lumpy ore or sinters. Minara Autlan, the Mexican FeMn producer, is however making Mn-nodules as a raw material for Mn-alloy production. The Mn nodules have been characterized by XRF, XRD, by wet chemical methods and by EPMA. The Mn/Fe ratio is somewhat lower compared to commercial Mn ore on the marked. The basicity of the ore is however close to 1, and additional fluxes may not be used. The Mn-nodules will be in a state of manganosite (MnO), tephroite ((Mn, Ca)2SiO4) and galaxite ((Mn,Mg)Al2O4). This leads to a low melting temperature area. A low porosity and low amount of higher Mn-oxides gives a high thermal strength to the nodules.

Impacted waters, often complex, are created in mining which at some point in the mine life cycle will need to be attended. The simplest and most cost effective method of handling impacted water is to reuse it as makeup water for operations. At the end of mine life, operational reuse will not be an option and the impacted water will require treatment to achieve alternative reuse goals. Conventional mine impacted water treatment is successful in removing unwanted constituents but create brine and sludge that may require special handling or additional treatment, resulting in additional liabilities and costs. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold has taken an approach to water treatment that focuses on transformation not concentration. The Water Treatment Test Facility located at Sierrita Mine has three test plants that are piloting the mine impacted water transformation process. Two plants have been designed for the removal of calcium and sulfate with products of gypsum and sulfur. The third plant removes metals from process water and transforms them into marketable metal sulfides. The transformation, rather than concentration, of mine impacted water solutes greatly reduce long term risks.

"The reserves and production of steep coal seams account for approximately 15–20% of the total coal reserves in China and 5–10% of the total annual coal production. More than 50% of the coal is high-quality coking coal and anthracite, based on reviews of steeply dipping seam mining at home and abroad. Fully mechanized mining is considered to be the only safe and efficient way to mine steeply dipping seams. To achieve fully mechanized longwall mining, four issues must be addressed: ground control, equipment stability control, development of complete sets of equipment, and safety. Engineers must focus on many factors of steeply dipping seams, such as the following: stope, roof asymmetrical structure, stability control, “roof-support-floor” system dynamics control, multi-region big-range ground control technology, adjustment false-inclined method, nonlinear layout method, control technology, safety, and development of complete sets of equipment. Engineering practices in China introduce these concepts systematically: fully mechanized mining of medium-thickness seams, fully mechanized high mining of thick seams, fully mechanized caving of extremely thick coal seams, fully mechanized mining of coal seams, roadway support, and so on. A steeply dipping seam is one with a dipping angle in the range of 35°–55°. This accounts for about 15%–20% of the total coal reserves in China. Because of the environment, more than 50% of the coal is high-quality coking coal and anthracite. Mining steeply dipping coal seams is known to be difficult in the mining industry. After the study conducted by Germany, Poland, and the former Soviet Union in the1970s–1980s, the fully mechanized mining basic theory, core technology, and key equipment research have not been a breakthrough. Being fully mechanized is a technological “restricted area” at home and abroad. A lot of steeply dipping seams are excavated by non-mechanized mining, leading to harsh job environments, labor-intensive work, low productivity, frequent accidents, and significant security hazards. The death rate per million tons of coal reaches above 4.0 and is far higher than slow inclined coal seam mining. Making steeply dipping seam mining safe and efficient is a global problem that urgently needs to be solved. Fully mechanized mining is the only way to overcome these problems (Wu, 2003; Wu, Yun, and Zhou, 2000). The realization of fully mechanized coal seam mining must solve four problems. (1) Examine the disaster mechanisms induced by overburden “key strata” mutation under steeply dipping seams as a basis for ground control methods and technical problems. (2) Work to solve the dynamic stability control technical problems of thousands of tons of complete sets of equipment under the steeply dipping seams. (3) Complete sets of equipment must be developed to adapt to the conditions of steeply dipping seams. (4) Overcome the steeply dipping face safety protection technical problems. In the last two decades, a number of universities, research institutes, and enterprises have realized the importance of safety and efficiency of steeply dipping seams in China. This is especially true of Professor Wu Yongping’s “hard coal layer safe and efficient mining” team at Xi’an University of Science and Technology. After several generations’ research and technical work, the team puts forward China’s longwall mechanized coal mining of steeply dipping seams strata control basic theory. This paper puts forth a series of key technologies of fully mechanized mining, develops and manufactures complete sets of equipment by independent innovation, and establishes a perfect face security system, forming a theory and technology system for fully mechanized longwall mining of steeply dipping seams."

Fine coal obtained from Kailuan mine served as the processing object of this study. This material was difficult to separate. A flotation rate experiment was designed to investigate the process distribution characteristics of size and density during fine coal flotation. Size and density analyses of five clean were studied. The mineral morphology of flotation rate experiment cleaning was observed through scanning electron microscopy. The fractions -0.074+0.045 mm and -0.045 mm exhibited the best practical floatability and presented the highest combustible body recovery rates, but the selectivity and natural floatability of these two fractions were the worst. The - 0.074 mm fraction has contaminated the clean coal from the early stage of flotation, and the cumulative clean coal ash of -0.074 mm reached up to 17.20%. The low and middle-density classes displayed varying flotation behavior, but the flotation yield difference was only nearly 3%. The middle-density class caused the clean coal to have high ash content. The poor selectivity of fine coals, middle-density fraction, and fine mud resulted in high-ash clean coals during flotation. Thus, improving the selectivity of fine coal, restraining the flotation of fine mud, and grinding the coal to decrease the middle density mass fraction to liberate clean coals can yield high-quality clean coals through flotation.

An economic analysis of underground gasification of coal, based on experimental results obtained by the Bureau of Mines, indicates that a gas suitable for use in a power plant might be produced for approximately $.62 to $.77 per million British thermal units. This estimate does not include cost of land purchase. The gasification experiments were conducted in a 3-ft. seam of high volatile A bituminous coal. The major factors which can influence a change in operating costs are height of overburden, power costs, thermal efficiency, and the gasification air inlet pressure. Underground fires often prove difficult to control , and a small fire can quickly grow into a large one , endangering life and causing large property damage . Even a small underground fire may produce enough noxious gases to cause suffocation ; therefore , every precaution should be taken to prevent and control such fires . It is ironic that mine fires should be caused when utilizing materials that are in themselves fire - resistant ; yet , cutting and welding of iron and steel are proving to be common causes of underground fires in metal mines . This paper includes 19 examples of underground fires of this nature , and undoubtedly this is only a fraction of the number of similar fires that have occurred in the last few years . This paper will review some metal - mine fires caused by cutting or welding and point out precautions to be taken to prevent other fires from this cause .

A knowledge of the electrical surface characteristics of minerals is all-important in the choice of treatments to up-grade and beneficiate them. At their solid-liquid contacts, there are transfers of ionic species, which for insoluble oxide minerals are the H+ and OH-ions. The adsorption density of these ions can be detected by carrying out potentiometric titrations, and this paper describes the automation of such an apparatus. The details are discussed fully and the validity of the method is demonstrated by flotation tests.

This study investigated flotation of phosphate from a low-medium grade 8-12% P2O5, 65-73% SiO2 sedimentary phosphate ore from Kropz Elandsfontein (herein referred to as Elandsfontein) in South Africa. Quantitative evaluation of minerals by scanning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN) was used to determine apatite grain size distribution, liberation and mineral association in the F2 horizon sample. The mineralogy indicated that apatite was liberated and for the Elandsfontein plant to operate at the design throughput, the flotation feed has to be milled to a coarse grind ranging between 300 μm and 425 μm. Reverse flotation process routes using varying reagent dosages, and flotation feed top sizes that could possibly yield a final product of 31% P2O5,10% SiO2 at a reasonable +70% P2O5 recovery were investigated. Based on the results, a split circuit of coarse (-300+212μm) flotation and fine (-212+20μm) flotation, was mostly preferred as compared to treating the whole ore. A final combined concentrate of 31% P2O5 and 10% SiO2 with P2O5 recovery of 84% could be produced from the reverse split circuit. The robustness of reverse flotation for both coarse and fine fractions was further investigated. Reverse flotation of the fines fraction was found to be robust and produced a final product of 31% P2O5. It was however more challenging to achieve the required product grade and recoveries on the coarser fraction (-425+212μm), suggesting that reverse circuit was not adequately robust at fractions coarser than 300μm. With increased interest and urgency for coal mine safety and the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health 'and Safety Act, the Bureau's research effort in roof control has been greatly expanded. One new project, the subject of this paper, concerns improving conventional roof bolting and has been involved with the effects of different variables on the performance of roof bolt expansion anchors. These include types of expansion anchor, rock type at the anchorage horizon, borehole roughness, rate of torquing a roof bolt to set the anchor, installed tension, bolt length, and relative humidity fluctuations. For this work, two types of experiments were carried out. One was concerned with tension loss in bolt-anchor assemblies and simulated anchor performance in a static roof. The other dealt with anchor slippage as tension was increased and simulated anchor performance in an active roof. Trials were made in the laboratory under controlled conditions so that factors suspected of affecting expansion anchor performance could be selectively studied. Because of the natural variability in rock and the fact that most expansion anchor components are essentially rough castings or forgings, the experiments were designed to permit using analysis of variance techniques for analyzing data. Thus, in this paper, "significant" means statistically significant.

"An experimental and numerical study of the horizontal Bridgman growth of pure succinonitrile (SCN) and of a succinonitrile-1.0 mol. % acetone alloy (SCN-1.0 mol. % ACE) has been performed. Experiments at growth rates of 0, 2 and 40 µmis were investigated. The solid/liquid interface was stable (non-dendritic and non-cellular); however, it was not flat. Rather, it was significantly distorted by the influence of convection in the melt and, for the growth cases, by the moving temperature boundary conditions along the ampoule. For the alloy, the interface was determined to be unstable at growth rates greater than 2.8 µmis, but stable for the no-growth and 2 µmis growth cases. When compared to the pure SCN interface, the alloy interface forms closer to the cold zone,· indicating that the melting temperature has been suppressed by the addition of the alloying element. Two-dimensional computer simulations were performed for the no-growth case for both the pure and alloy materials. These simulations indicate that a primary longitudinal convective cell is formed in the melt. The maximum magnitude of velocity was calculated to be 1.515 mmls for pure SCN and 1. 724 mm/s for the alloy. The interface shape predicted by the computer simulation agrees well with the experimentally determined shape for the pure SCN case. In ongoing work, numerical simulations of the process during growth conditions are being performed.IntroductionIncreasingly, advanced materials used in the aerospace, automotive, optics and electronics fields require low levels of defects and high levels of solute uniformity. Directional solidification by the Bridgman process is widely used for synthesis of these high-quality materials. During Bridgman crystal growth, heat and mass transfer by both thermal and solutal gradient-driven convection and diffusion influence the shape of the solid/liquid interface and dopant segregation levels, and hence, directly determine the final crystal quality. Key process parameters include the applied furnace temperature distribution and rate of translation, ampoule properties and furnace orientation."

The OK orebody comprises a steep dipping narrow quartz reef averaging 0.4 m in width hosted in basalt and gabbro with porphyry bars cross-cutting through it. The following paper tracks the mining of this orebody, challenges encountered, measures undertaken to address these challenges and changes in mining conditions and methods as the mine matured in both depth and age. The initial mining method was narrow vein hand held shrink stoping accessed by shaft, that over the period of the mines life was superseded by gallery stoping, shrink stoping and ultimately mechanised narrow vein long hole sublevel open stoping. The reasoning behind the change in mining methods is detailed, including safety and cost benefits. The transition presented many challenges that were overcome, resulting in the successful development of a narrow vein long hole stoping method. The lessons learnt during the transition period and the practices and principles developed for successful mining of narrow vein orebodies using long-hole open stoping methods are summarised in this paper. The final section of the paper takes a retrospective view of how the knowledge gained through the mining of the OK orebody would be applied to a new mine containing an orebody of this type, with consideration given to the initial excavation design, equipment selection, mining sequence, geotechnical investigations and mining method used.

Reduce exposure of longwall face workers to respirable dust generated during the advancement of roof supports. Approach Identify and implement current water-application and improved support-movement practices used to lower support-generated dust. Defining the Problem Bureau studies have shown that on some longwall faces support dust can contribute over 30 percent of the respirable dust exposure of face workers. Conditions contributing to high levels of respirable dust generation during support movement are: depth of cover greater than 1,000 ft; immediate roof consisting of coal top or friable shales; and face-air velocities in excess of 500 fpm. Moreover, at most longwalls, supports are advanced on the intake-air side of the shearer as it travels with the airflow. This places the shearer operators, and in many cases the support movers, downwind of support advance, thus increasing their respirable dust exposures.
