Os aços de alta resistência microligados ao nióbio têm mostrado ser uma boa opção para fabricação de perfis estruturais, utilizando os conceitos já desenvolvidos para a indústria de gás e óleo. Entretanto, a definição das reais necessidades em termos de soldagem desta família de aços não está bem descrita nas normas de soldagem mais utilizadas pelo setor. Este trabalho demonstra uma metodologia de avaliação destes aços, através de simulações térmicas físicas (Gleeble e dilatometria) e ensaios mecânicos de amostras simuladas, de forma a elaborar um atlas de soldagem orientativo para melhor definição das faixas de parâmetros para soldagem deste material. A metodologia proposta foi aplicada a um aço BLAR bainítico da classe 65 ksi. Foi possível determinar com mais segurança a faixa de energia de soldagem recomendada, inclusive quanto à necessidade ou não do uso de pré-aquecimento, e evidenciar que as simulações são comparáveis a soldas reais. Esta abordagem mostrou trazer benefícios, como redução de custos com processo de pré-aquecimento desnecessário.

The foundation of effective leadership is communication. You can have all the leadership theories, models and training you want, but in the end it is all about leaders talking to, listening to and understanding the point of view of those below and above them.The foundation of effective safety is peoples’ behaviours. Every incident, every near miss and every safe act comes down to what one person does and how that affects themselves and others. We tend to focus these behavioural considerations on the people at the ‘coal face’, those most in harm’s way. But it is the individual behaviours of everyone in the organisation, particularly those at the top, which are just as (if not more) important. The foundation of effective safety leadership in the mining industry is that it starts at the top, with the individual behaviours of leaders. The behaviours of each and every leader will be reflected in their teams. And where their teams are made up of leaders, these leaders will pass these behaviours on to their teams and so on. It’s the sum total of what people see their leaders do and what they do as a result, that creates the ‘culture’ of the business – and it’s this culture that makes or breaks how safely people work.

Lamproite occurs in two locations in southeastern Kansas that are in close proximity to each other. In both locations, the lamproite is restricted to north- east-elongated, ellipsoidal depressions measuring about 3 mi by 1.5 mi. At the surface and in the shallow subsurface, lamproite occurs as sills that were intruded into Middle and Upper Pennsylvanian rocks consisting of shale, limestone, and minor sandstone. Isotopic age determinations by Zartman and others (1967) indicate that the lamproite was intruded during the Late Cretaceous (88-91 my). Drillholes for hydrocarbon exploration down to a depth of about 1,400 ft (top of the Mississippian) and numerous shallow drillholes (mostly 200-300 ft) by the Kansas Geological Survey in the northern portion of Silver City dome helped to understand the structural complexity and extent of the near-surface sills. Numerous radial faults showing small apparent vertical offsets limit the lateral continuation of individual sills. Concentric faults are believed to mark the edge of the depression. Wagner (1954) mapped the geology of Silver City dome in considerable detail and recognized a northward dipping, 120-ft-thick, lamproite sill exposed at the surface along the northeastern edge of the dome. The upper 40-50 ft of the sill weathers olive-brown and has a soft, clayey consistency in which only the phlogopite mica is recognizable. The weathered material has been mined by Micro-Lite LLC since 1982 from the exposed sill in an open-pit that measures about half a mile extending in an east- west direction. The bulk of the material, about 98%, is used as an additive in mineral supplements for cattle feed.

It is the purpose of this paper to present data on brines occurring in the Frio formation of the Texas Gulf Coast, and to show how their composition varies, (1) with depth below the surface, (2) with depth below the top of the formation, and (3) along the approximate strike. The brines vary in chloride content from 3,180 to 73,000 p.p.m., though the average salinity of the salt waters is shown to vary with total depth; the concentration being 35,000 to 40,000 p.p.m. at 3500 to 5500 ft., slightly less than 50,000 p.p.m. chloride at 5500 to 6500 ft. and average 38,000 to 40,000 below 6500 feet. From the analyses available, it appears that the highest concentration of salts occurs in the upper 300 ft. of the formation, while lower salinity is found with increasing depth below this point. The salt waters from wells in Starr County show less concentration of dissolved salts than in any other group of wells farther north along the strike. In all, 116 analyses from 63 fields and 14 wildcats, from depths ranging from 1300 to 11,400 ft. below the surface and from z to 3240 ft. below the top of the Frio, are recorded. Introduction Brines have been studied for many Years in an attempt to solve some of the geologic and production problems associated with the production of oil and gas. One practical application of study of . water analyses is the correlation of waters occurring above, in, or below the producing sand in the same field or throughout the same formation. The Frio formation, the series of sands and shales occurring below the Marginulina zone and above the Vicksburg, is one of the major oil and gas-producing formations in the Texas Gulf Coast. Fossils are rare or absent in the upper Frio throughout most of the area. When available, cuttings and cores, and electric logs were used to determine the top of the Frio. A change in lithology was used to determine this point in most of the wells, and fossils were used in some of the deep wells. It is realized that a change in lithology is not perfect for correlation purposes over long distances and some of the trends may be influenced by the inability to differentiate between the nonfossiliferous Marginulina zone and the Frio. It underlies virtually all the area shown on the accompanying map (Fig. I). Although it is not productive in the updip facies, it has been explored to a limited degree below I2,000 ft. Further more, toward the coast line future drilling to deeper depths should encounter this formation. Adolph Greiner, Seraing, Belgium:—I have nothing special to add to Professor Hubert's paper except to say that there are some little things that it would be well to have corrected when the paper comes to be published. In dealing with the thermal efficiency of the engine, you will find that the 29.84 per cent. was a very high one. Professor Hubert has forgotten those engines built under the Cockerill type, but he has referred to them in Appendix 11. At our works at Cockerill we have built 63 engines, giving 63,000 h.p., and the other companies who have received licenses have built 113 engines, making 103,000 h.p., and aggregating 176 engines and 166,000 h.p. Eight years ago I had the pleasure of giving to the Institute the results obtained up to that time. Since then a good many engines have been constructed. In 1898 I thought a blast-furnace producing 100 tons of pig iron would allow 3,000 h.p. Professor Witz and Professor Hubert show that with the same production of pig the new engines take 3,800 h.p. out of the gas. At present at Cockerill we make 700 to 800 tons of pig iron per day, and we hope to have 26,000 h.p. in a few years. At present we have only half of that in gas-engines, but we hope to have in five or six years all the gas out of these furnaces to the number of 25,000 or 26,000 h.p. "When a shock wave is released in the bottom of a drill hole filled with wet concrete slurry, the result is called an electrohydrodynamic effect, or EHDE. The energy is carried through the fluid with minimal loss because the slurry is an incompressible medium. Repetitive discharges provide a series of energy pulses that compact the soil along the pile shaft and at its base. The process is analogous to repeated applications of low-energy blast densification or to dynamic compaction. In general, the process is not depth dependent. EHDE was identified in the 18th century by an American scientist who observed that a spark between two electrodes placed under water induced a burst of pressure. In 1957, two Russian engineers formulated a process and received a patent for a method of creating a pressure wave by transforming power from an electrical discharge to a mechanical impact. They derived more than 200 applications for technical and industrial processes.In the 1970s, civil engineers at the Engineering and Building Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia, began to look at EHDE to improve the capacity of drilled piles. Early experiments showed that electric discharges in a wet concrete slurry mix could create a pressure wave of up to 26 MPa (3700 psi). Later tests demonstrated that this pressure level could be created in a drilled pile hole. The researchers devised equipment and in the early 1990s began to study pulse technology as applied to drilled piles.This application was accepted into the Russian Federation Building Code in the 1990s. The code treats “regular” drilled piles with equivalent bearing area as having roughly half the capacity of a driven pile. However, the code considers drilled piles treated with the EHDE technique a direct “one for one” substitution for driven piles and allows higher values if the capacity is established by static load testing. Hundreds of projects have been completed in Russia using this technology to value engineer drilled pile projects. In several instances, the number of drilled piles installed was fewer than half of the number originally planned for due to the capacity increase that EHDE-treated piles provided.Drilled PilesIn drilled pile construction, the EHDE process creates a mechanical pressure wave that impacts the base and sidewall of a drilled pile shaft. Soft, poorly consolidated or loose soil is compacted by successive pulses of pressure created by electrical discharges. These mechanical impulses are made by inserting a discharge probe into the wet concrete slurry. A discharge across the tip of the probe creates the pulse that travels outward to the sidewall and base of the drilled pile through the incompressible medium of the slurry. The power pack ratings for equipment presently in use are 35 and 50 kJ (kilojoule).Each pressure wave strikes the soil, causing compaction and expanding the hole. Workers apply the pulses until the size of the hole stops increasing. They watch the slurry level during pulsing. When the level quits dropping, further soil compaction in the drill hole sidewalls and base is not possible. After the pulse process is complete, workers insert a rebar cage and the pile is finished.The process does not alter the soil mineralogy. The electrical discharge is internally grounded and does not arc to the sidewalls of the drill hole. Soil is not scorched or altered in any manner; it is only compacted by the pressure wave. This technique has been used in urban areas with no effect on electrical or electronic equipment."

This paper discusses the design, construction and performance of a 30 inch thick diaphragm wall recently constructed in Baltimore, Maryland at Inner Harbor East. The project site is an established marina and waterfront property. The geologic profile consists of fill, alluvial silt and clay, Potomac sand and clay, decomposed rock, and weathered rock on top of gneiss bedrock. The approximately 1,300 ft long perimeter diaphragm wall serves as a water cut-off, perimeter basement wall and support of excavation for the high rise project?s five levels of below-ground parking. Due to the fast track construction and the tight schedule, the initial design of the diaphragm wall was based on a limited amount of geotechnical information. Supplemental borings were then performed along the alignment of the wall to verify the design assumptions and wall depths. Additionally, the design criteria required that the wall be keyed into a competent stratum with low permeability. The Engineer of Record for the diaphragm wall, Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers (MRCE) completed the design and produced accelerated construction documents allowing the developer to release the drawings early for bid. This paper describes the theoretical soil parameters used to develop the loads, moments, and shears for the design of the diaphragm wall and the temporary tieback anchors. It also discusses the refinement of these soil parameters using the observed wall displacements and tieback pre-stressing forces as a baseline. This paper compares the calibrated parameters to the values used in the design of the wall. It explains how the soil structure interaction model was developed and the soil parameters calibrated using PLAXIS 2D non-linear finite element software. The paper also discusses the use of the proprietary CWS joint by Soletanche/Inquip JV as end stop between consecutive wall panels and the unique top-down construction utilized to support the diaphragm wall at the Southeast double re-entrant corner.

Companies in the mining industry have been involved in a range of controversies over planning, siting, permitting, environmental, and enforcement issues. Through the use of conflict resolution case studies, this paper will present approaches and procedures that can help companies and other involved parties to successfully manage and resolve differences in a mutually acceptable manner.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been evaluating longwall mining-induced strata fractures and their impacts on casing stability of Marcellus shale gas wells located in longwall pillars. To understand the extent of overburden fractures after longwall mining, NIOSH researchers drilled a post-mining corehole into the fractured strata above the Pittsburgh coal seam longwall gob. Knowing the extent of the fracture zone height will help gas operators minimize the hazards of drilling into longwall gobs. The core was retrieved from the surface down to the top of the gob void. Various fractures were encountered varying from 35 to 64°, depending on lithologic type and relative closeness to the gob. The longwall panel dimension was 457-m wide and 3657-m long, in which the total fracture zone height was found to be at 141 m and the hydraulic connected fracture zone at 87.7 m above the top of the Pittsburgh seam. In addition to core drilling through the gob, FLAC3D modeling was also used to simulate the formation of fracture zone and the orientations of longwall-induced fractures. This study provides much-needed evidence on the fracture zone of Pittsburgh seam longwall gobs to help gas operators avoid potential hazards associated with drilling through highly fractured zones in longwall gobs.

An impact wear testing machine was devised by the Bureau of Mines that simulates the repeated impact conditions encountered in large milling and grinding operations where breakage and spalling are problems. The apparatus provides data on materials that may help in the design of alloys with improved resistance to deformation, spalling, and breakage. The test blocks are 2 in thick by 6 in by 8 in. Impacts are produced by dropping 3-in-diam balls weighing 4 lb from a height of 10 ft. Tests were run until breakage occurred or to a total of 100,000 impacts. Four types of failures of the test block were observed: (1) cold flow of the bulk material by plastic deformation, (2) flaking of the surface in the impact region, (3) spalling of the block to form a crater in the region of impact, and (4) breakage of the test block into two or more major pieces. The effects of composition, heat treatment, microstructure, and hardness on types of failure are discussed.

Com a inclusão de limites de emissão de elementos traços nas legislações ambientais mundo afora, este tema vem ganhando importância. É conhecido que a qualidade das matérias-primas utilizadas nos processos siderúrgicos pode interferir nos impactos ambientais de seus processos. No caso do processo de sinterização, a presença de elementos traços está ligada a composição de sua carga. Com o objetivo de determinar quais elementos irão compor as emissões atmosféricas, resíduos, efluentes e produtos faz necessário estudar o modo de ocorrência dos elementos traços em cada insumo. A interação entre as propriedades de cada elemento e as condições de massa e termodinâmicas permitem o estudo de seu comportamento e partição. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é levantar o estado da arte da sinterização de minério de ferro e suas emissões, estudando a origem, o comportamento e a partição de elementos traços e radionuclídeos, quando submetidos às condições do referido processo.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a salt-free, fluxless method for reclaiming metallic aluminum from aluminum dross. The dross is smelted under argon, nitrogen, or carbon dioxide, instead of a salt flux, in an externally heated pot furnace. Aluminum recovery, using argon, is equal to recoveries reported from commercial smelters that process dross in rotary-type furnaces This salt-free method could offer a reduction in air pollution, lower energy requirements by elimination of salts, and the production of up to 60 percent less solid waste for disposal than the salt method.

Ventilation-pressure surveys are required to determine the rates of pressure losses in various parts of mine-airway systems. These may be determined directly by differential pressure measurements or deduced from absolute pressure measurements, Despite the confusion caused by its inverted nonlinear scale, the altimeter has special application to pressure surveys in mines in which only small differences in elevation are involved, as is true for most of our large bituminous-coal mines in these, the judicious use of information obtained by pressure surveying can result in greatly improved working conditions as regards health and safety and, in many instances, can yield large financial returns. The main purposes of this report are to discuss methods of using altimeters for pressure surveys and to present the particular methods of making surveys and calculating the results of surveys used by the Mine Ventilation Section of the Bureau of Mines.

The oxygen bottom blown copper smelting process is a new technology which has been widely applied to the copper production in China. In this work, a computational thermodynamics model for this technology has been established, based on smelting mechanism and theory of Gibbs free energy minimization. The calculated results from the model agree well with the actual industrial data, indicating that the model can be used for the predictions under different operating conditions. The tendencies of the key parameters (such as Cu losses and Fe3O4 content in slag) and the distribution ratios of the minor elements (such as Pb, Zn, As, Sb and Bi) can be predicted by adjusting the oxygen/ore ratio charged into the bottom blown copper smelting furnace. The model can be used to monitor and optimize the industrial operations of the oxygen bottom blown copper smelting process.

A borehole inclinometer with FBG optical fiber sensors has been developed to clarify very slow slope movements, and the results of its application to a real slope have been shown. The main characteristics kept in mind while developing this inclinometer are as follows. Firstly, the workability must be good so that only one cable is required for taking the measurements, because the inclinometer is composed of several FBG sensor elements constructed on an optical fiber. Secondly, the minimum interval of the distorted measurements must be close, namely, within 100 mm. Thirdly, the inclinometer must excel in thunder resistance. The measurements were executed by setting up the developed borehole inclinometer on a slope where the rate of displacement is several millimeters per year. The movement of the device was developed by comparing it with that of the results of an existing borehole inclinometer. The area of the displacement concentration, 1 m in width for 4-m sections, was confirmed by the existing borehole inclinometer. The boring core, recovered using a high-quality drilling technique, was examined. Landslide clay was not permitted at the location where the displacement had concentrated as a result of comparing the measurement results with the boring core, and the rotation of gravel by the movement of the slope’s land block was allowed. These results show the slope being caught in the stage just before a primary landslide. In addition, the feature whereby the slope behavior depends on the depth was analyzed by comparing the information on the underground displacement with precipitation and earthquake records.

O alto consumo de energia e a elevada emissão de dióxido de carbono são os maiores problemas da indústria de cimento Portland relacionados à poluição do meio ambiente. Com o objetivo de reduzir estes problemas, os cimentos geopoliméricos despontam como uma nova classe de materiais de alto desempenho e não agressivos ao meio ambiente utilizados como aglomerante mineral capaz de substituir total ou parcialmente o cimento Portland. Estes cimentos são considerados quasi-frágeis devido ao seu comportamento elástico não-linear, provocado pela relaxação e redistribuição de tensões antes da ruptura. Todos os resultados obtidos no programa experimental para o concreto de cimento geopolimérico (CCG) foram comparados com aqueles obtidos para o concreto de cimento Portland (CCP), sob as mesmas condições de ensaio. Neste trabalho, são apresentados resultados de difração de raios-X (DRX), microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e análise térmica (DSC/TGA), a fim de reunir informações para um melhor entendimento da microestrutura do concreto geopolimérico.

During the past decade, a general awareness of the need for and subsequent development of increased safety in United States coal mines has taken place. Government and industry alike were stimulated into accelerating their actions through unacceptable accident statistics and costs (in terms of human misery dollar values). Those of us who work in the United States coal industry are aware of the development of governmental controls on nine safety. Both Federal and State regulations have placed increased responsibility upon mine owners and operators to insure a safe working environment and to provide training for miners. No other industrial group of workers has received such attention or, in our opinion, deserves it more.
