Pre-combustion cleaning of coal plays a key role in the process of efficient and clean utilization of coal resources. Recently, wet beneficiation of coal is predominant around the world. Nevertheless, wet beneficiation processes are limited by the increasingly serious problem of worldwide shortage of water, especially in China. Thus, it is imperative to develop efficient dry coal beneficiation techniques. Currently, several technologies such as air dense medium fluidized bed, compound dry cleaning and air jigging have successfully achieved high-efficiency separation of 50~6 mm coal. However, in recent years, a large amount of fine coal is generated as the mechanized mining technology has been progressively deployed in coal sector. Thus, it is necessary to develop efficient dry beneficiation techniques for fine coal. In recent years, many countries including China, India, Canada, Germen, and Australia have carried out many research works on fine coal dry beneficiation techniques. China University of Mining and Technology has carried out systematic researches on the introduction the vibrated energy to traditional air dense medium fluidized bed for fine coal beneficiation. This paper studied air dense medium vibrated fluidized beds (ADMVFB) for fine coal dry beneficiation. The experimental results show that the coal of <6 mm size can be beneficiated in an ADMVFB efficiently with the E value of 0.065~0.085, the separating density can be adjusted in the range of 1.45~2.2 g/cm3, and the lower limit of beneficiation can reach to 0.5 mm. Experimental results on thin and thick castings poured in aluminum A356 and magnesium AZ91E by the low pressure permanent mold process have been compared to the result of filling simulations for thin and thick castings. If the results of modeling is reliable when the liquid remains above the liquidus temperature, this is no longer the case when partial solidification occurs. The visco-elastic behavior of a partially solidified liquid is difficult to put into equation as it depends on the amount of shear it has been been subjected to. Attempts to predict misruns with a commercial software has been proven to be very difficult if not impossible; divergence of the numerical solution has been observed unless prohibitively long computing times are used. In order to overcome these difficulties from a practical standpoint, a simple method is proposed which consists in tracking the temperature of the advancing liquid metal front so as to make sure it will always be above so-called `Misrun Critical Temperature&apos; (MCT) determined experimentally for thin and thick aluminum A356 and magnesium AZ91E castings. If the liquid metal front falls below this temperature, a cold-shut or misrun is likely to happen at this location. The values of MCT for thin and thick in aluminum A356 and magnesium AZ91E were determined experimentally on misrun castings of extreme geometries (a thin 2.5 mm wall cover and a 6mm to 25 mm thick bell housing). MCT was found to be lower for magnesium AZ91E and for the thicker castings.

"The American Consul at Guatemala City reports that the Guatemala Marble Mining Company is preparing to operate a marble quarry about 13 miles from the railroad station of Zacapa, which station is a little over 100 miles from Puerto Barrios, the nearest port from which the product may be shipped. The deposit is extensive, and though somewhat broken up in places, great quantities of sound marble are available. It is claimed that the marble is equal in quality to the best product of the Italian Carrara quarries.Access to the quarry by rail is obtained by a spur track of the International Railways of Central America (Ferrocarril Internacional de Centro America) from Marmol, 3 miles south of Zacapa. This spur is about 5 miles long and terminates at the foot of the mountains. A double-track incline cable-way 2000 feet in length has been constructed to bring the marble down the mountain. From the top of the incline to the quarry there is a railway six miles in length over which the rock will be hauled by two side-geared Shay locomotives."

Durability risks for underground facilities can be underestimated during design phase as compared to well-known geological risks. However, unclear durability requirements can result in construction schedule delay and change orders. Unlike bridges or buildings, a unified underground durability code or standard does not exist. This paper will provide a durability approach for underground facilities, including degradation modes, mitigations, and compliance measures during construction. In addition, this paper will address how to clearly specify durability requirements in a contract document to reduce disputes during construction and discuss key durability tests that are time consuming and will impact construction schedule if not timely planned.

It is particularly challenging for the mining industry to create and implement an efficient and adaptable mining innovation model to secure the continuous improvement of processes and products via technology. Human resource departments must play a vital role in shifting the mining culture, enabling these new classes of digitally skilled professionals to manage the mining operations of the future. This paper proposes the implementation of a concept based on the 5S mining innovation model ((a) Nieto, 2019), in a coal mining project in Central Asia, Mongolia. Practical and empirical evidence suggests that the model could serve as a roadmap to developing technologies and methods for the mines of the future.

The mining and exploration industries have been using Geostatistics (Matheron, 1963) for the past forty years. It has been extensively incorporated into three dimensional block modeling software whose usage has reflected the growth in the use of personal computers since 1980. Because of the utility of geostatistical models in mining and production planning, much of the modern reserve and resource modeling is done by mining engineers, geostatisticians and geological engineers. Explorationists are initially less concerned with three dimensional models until such time as a deposit has been roughly delineated. However, the concept of regionalized variables in ore deposits deals with the effect of spatial correlations between data points in a three dimensional sample space and should be useful for optimizing the spacing of drill holes to allow maximum bang-for-the-buck in drilling programs. This paper examines three common deposit types (porphyry copper, VMS and intrusive gold) to examine whether geostatistical methods have been used to minimize drilling costs because of better understanding of spatial correlations. The three model types were chosen from publicly available corporate websites of Canadian based Junior Mining Companies. They include the Wolverine polymetallic zinc deposit of Yukon Zinc in Yukon, Canada; the El Morro Deposit in Chile (30 percent ownership by New Gold Mining Company, and the Fort Knox Gold deposit in Alaska and 50 percent ownership by Nova Gold Resources). Typically, individual mining corporations post their technical reports as CNI 43-101 reports on their corporate website as indications of the favorability or progress on their more exciting properties. Data considered for this paper was not collected or generated by the author, but the information was extracted from these publicly available sites and had a variety of authorship.

"Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy sorting technology is incorporated in an automated optical mineral sorter that can discriminate between materials using the differences in characteristics when exposed to near-infrared radiation. During September 2014 to April 2015, a pilot plant that utilized NIR technology to discriminate between kimberlite and waste materials was commissioned to determine the viability of including this technology in the diamond winning process flow sheet at Cullinan Diamond Mine. The plant was used to minimize the waste content in the size fraction -70+35 mm that reports to the crushing section and then to the dense media separation process. This paper describes the initial test work, conducted at Mintek, that led to the decision to conduct a pilot-scale study. The mineralogical characterization of the feed and product streams to establish the sorting criteria and the operational data obtained during the pilot plant campaign are described. The results indicated a good possibility of discriminating between the kimberlite and waste material using NIR technology. However, the consistency of discrimination was not good enough to avoid the risk of potential diamond loss. Furthermore, a lower than expected availability of the machine reduced the throughput capabilities. IntroductionUsing near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) technology for ore sorting is a new concept for the mineral processing and mining industry. NIRS has been used for decades in the laboratory for the identification of pure minerals, and has its roots in the recycling, food, and pharmaceutical industries (Salter and Wyatt, 1991; Robben et al., 2009). Ore sorting in itself is not a new concept; it was introduced during the Stone Age with handsorting being the first method to separate valuable materials from gangue (Wills and Napier-Munn, 2006; Sassos, 1985). However, over the years the scale of mining has increased and hand-sorting has become challenging to implement (Joensson, 2014).Sensor-based sorting is an advanced technology that can help overcome problems such as ore dilution experienced in mineral processing operations. The benefits are lower energy and water costs, reduced ore dilution, lower environmental impact, and improved profit margin (Mathew, 1974; Jonsson, 2014; Salter and Wyatt, 2009; Death et al., 2009). In sensor-based sorting, materials are mechanically sorted based on certain physical properties that are detected by a sensor (Dalm, 2013). Research has found that with NIR scanners it is possible to obtain a ‘fingerprint’ of a sample that is directly related to its mineralogical composition. According to Woutruba et al. (2009), molecules absorb NIR radiation by means of electronic and vibrational transitions. Nowadays, there are many sensors available in the market that utilize different material properties; the choice of a sensor is dependent on the mineralogy of the ore."

"This contribution describes linkage of stress concentration at the face of tabular excavations, for example, longwall coal mine panels, at a meter scale to surface subsidence at a kilometer scale. Joints are considered according to orientation and spacing at an intermediate scale. A new dual-node, dual-mesh technique based on first principles uses a multi-scale technique that allows for computing whole mine surface subsidence while also allowing for computational details of stress, strain and displacement about main entries and pillars, panel entries, and bleeder entries. The technique is implemented in a conventional continuous Galerkin finite element program that has been in use for many years.The advantage of the dual-node, dual-mesh technique is the capability to do a whole mine analysis that takes into account interaction between all sections of a mine where stress transfer over long distances is often the rule rather than the exception while at the same time allowing for details of stress concentration at working faces where caving is initiated and subsidence begins. The technique, outlined recently during ARMA 2014 (Pariseau, 2014), is applied to an underground coal mine in central Utah where mines are developed from outcrops in steep canyon walls. Meshes contain over 10 million, three-dimensional nodes; runtimes are typically overnight, as a practical matter. Results compare favorably with mine subsidence measurements made over a period of several years and show the capability of this new technique to provide useful design guidance for tabular deposits such as underground coal mines. The role of variability or uncertainty in strata properties is illustrated in element safety factor distributions about development, bleeder and main entries and pillars. Such details are new in this contribution. Energy tracking for mine-induced seismicity is also new. Results show a high correlation between number of events and failed elements and suggest a simple index to mine induced seismicity."

INTRODUCTION In this chapter, the term "down-the-hole drill" (DTH drill) is used as a generic name that encompasses the various trade names and other references such as "downhole drill," "in-the-hole drill," etc. This chapter is limited to a description of DTH drills used in stoping large underground ore bodies. DTH drills differ from conventional drills by virtue of the placement of the drill in the drill string. The DTH drill follows immediately behind the bit into the hole, rather than remaining on the feed as with ordinary drifters. Thus, no energy is dissipated through the steel or couplings, and the penetration rate is nearly constant, regardless of the depth of the hole. Since the drill must operate on compressed air and tolerates only small amounts of water, cuttings are flushed either by air with water-mist injection or by standard mine air with a dust collector at the collar. HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT Mine managers have long known the economies enjoyed by quarry and open-pit operators in producing large quantities of ore. The savings are due primarily to the availability of massive equipment, capable of drilling large blastholes to reduce the amount of drilling, increase the fragmentation, reduce secondary blasting, and im¬prove the flow of the product. In an attempt to reduce underground mining costs, various methods are used for long-hole drilling, includ¬ing standard pneumatic percussion drifters and diamond drills. These systems have their shortcomings; percus¬sion drills are limited to small hole sizes and they ex¬perience excessive deviation and significant loss of energy with increased depth. The diamond drills provide deeper and straighter holes, but only at high cost. Both systems suffer from high noise levels, low penetration rates, and poor explosives distribution, among other problems. When the mining companies approached the drill manufacturers for a compact and portable large-hole jumbo for underground use, they specified not more than 1 % deviation on 60 m (200 ft) of vertical hole and a penetration rate of 15 m/h (50 fph). On Dec. 23, 1960, a test unit was placed in service in Montana and met the performance criteria. Though lacking the so¬phisticated features available today, the economies of surface blasting were brought underground. Unfortunately, the first system did not gain immedi¬ate acceptance in the industry. Among the factors con¬tributing to its demise were resistance to change, the need to alter development methods for the ore bodies, and a lack of flexibility in moving the rig from setup to setup and from level to level. In 1972, the mining industry again challenged the drill manufacturers to provide a workable jumbo that would combine compactness, ease of maintenance, relia¬bility, and efficiency, all on a self-propelled chassis. The manufacturers responded by providing improved jumbos, which have been accepted with enthusiasm throughout the mining industry. Today&apos;s DTH jumbos are capable of drilling from 100 to 200 mm (4 to 8 in.) diam holes that can be reamed to even larger diameters. The holes can be drilled to depths of 150 m (500 ft), depending upon ground conditions and the capability of the jumbo to retrieve the steel and drill. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical DTH jumbo. APPLICATIONS The uses to which DTH drill jumbos have been put are quite numerous, with new uses being found regularly. For convenience, these uses may be classified as primary blastholes and nonblasting holes. Primary Blastholes The original purpose for the development of the DTH jumbo was for drilling primary blastholes that could be mined by open-stope methods. Prior to the advent of the DTH jumbo, extensive development was required before production drilling could begin. Sub¬levels were required to allow access for column-and-arm stopers or ring/fan jumbos, to the extent necessary based on the effective penetration of the chosen machine. With the DTH jumbo, the mine engineer is able to reduce preproduction time and development costs. How¬ever, the most significant saving results from an im¬proved cost per ton of broken ore in the production phase. To utilize a DTH system, only a top heading and drawpoints are necessary. The top heading can be the width of the ore body with a 3.7-m (12-ft) back. A drop-raise pattern is drilled and shot to begin the stoping operation, providing a free face for subsequent blasting. A typical layout is illustrated in Fig. 2. The advantages of this system include: 1) Drilling and blasting are independent operations, and blasting can be performed at a rate congruous with the mine&apos;s ton-per-day capacity. 2) The development layout is simplified. 3) Good explosive distribution is achieved, provid¬ing more uniform fragmentation. 4) Environmental conditions for operators are im¬proved, including improved safety with all work directed downward (not overhead), lower noise levels, little fog, and a reduced dust count. 5) Improved production per manshift. 6) Simplified and easier operator work cycles. 7) Reduced cost per ton of product. 8) Fewer holes lost due to ground shifts. Nonblasting Holes With the introduction of the compact DTH jumbos, other practical uses became apparent, including the drilling of: 1) Holes for sand fill, from level to level and from level to stope. 2) Drain and dewatering holes. 3) Power and communications cable holes.

En el caso que el mineral contiene dos metales básicos, se requiere de una mezcla intrincada de depresores para obtener una flotación selectiva o en bulk y si contiene tres metales básicos, los depresores y modificadores aumentan en número y puntos de alimentación. En 1957, como parte sus experimentaciones, la Cerro de Pasco Corporation utiilizó los flowmeters en la planta piloto de 50 toneladas cortas secas por día. Sin embargo, dicho plan presentó inconvenientes como las fallas en la correcta alimentación, errores en la calibración del alimentador de discos, órdenes a los reactivistas o derrame de radioactivos, ente otros. De otro lado, las ventajas que ofrece dicha operación está en la determinación del control de reactivos, el cual está bajo cargo de un supervisor, así como el costo de instalación se reduce a 50% en comparación con el sistema convencional de discos.

The following is a Maintainability Design Checklist for coal mining equipment. The purpose of the checklist is to provide a summary of design review points for the maintainability assessment of new or existing underground equipment. It specifically focuses on the identification of equipment design features, tasks, or procedures that impact equipment downtime, repair costs, labor hours and maintainer skill level requirements. Some checklist points are general in nature. The checklist was designed to be used across all categories of underground equipment. The intent is to draw attention to design features and maintenance procedures that will increase maintainability requirements. You are encouraged to adapt this checklist to site specific or machine specific requirements by: Inserting specific performance criteria for various categories of maintenance tasks. For example; all hydraulic lines on a shuttle car should be replaceable in 15 minutes or 25 minutes, etc. Adding or deleting checklist items for different categories of equipment. You would include environmental control equipment, for example, on face equipment and not on shuttle cars or man trips. Adding additional checklist items based on site or equipment specific maintenance histories or experience, company maintenance standards, or other factors.

IN 1914, the officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., faced with the problem of introducing new methods to increase production in the old and nearly depleted pools of Venango County, became interested in the Smith-Dunn (Marietta) process which was at that time being tried out in southeastern Ohio and which was already yielding very encouraging results. A license to use the process in Pennsylvania was secured from the owners of the patents. These patents were later declared invalid. The method was first used in Pennsylvania on a property consisting of about 434 acres, of which 300 are productive, at Hamilton Corners, 15 miles northeast of Oil City, in Cherry Tree and Oakland Townships, Venango County. The producing horizon is the First Sand of the Venango Group. A small oil pool was opened up in this vicinity in 1904. By July, 1916, when the compressed air was first introduced to restore pressure, the production had dropped to a point where it was no longer possible to continue profitable operation. From that time until March, 1927, over 100,000 bbl. of oil have been recovered from the tract. The property is being operated at present by the Brundred Oil Corpn. and Lux. The 1926 production, amounting to 10,650 bbl., was only 400 bbl. short of the maximum reached during any year of the 10-year period that the process has been in operation. Inasmuch as the Hamilton Corners pool is the first one in Pennsylvania in which the Marietta process was tried out, and the one in which it has been longest in continuous operation, considerable interest attaches to the results obtained. J: Brundred, officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., all their data on this operation were made available to the writer in connection with an investigation of rejuvenation methods in the State for the Pennsylvania Geological Survey.

The primary limiting factor for hoisting capacity from great depths is the self-weight of steel wire ropes. Steel wire ropes are very suitable for mine hoisting due to their high strength and durability, but have the negative characteristic of a low strength/weight ratio. Also, as hoisting depths increase, the service life of steel wire ropes decreases due to the higher stresses and physical effects on the ropes. The significantly higher strength/weight ratio of synthetic ropes offers the primary advantage of hoisting a larger payload with a similar size rope and hoisting plant. The beneficial properties of synthetic ropes could be used to improve the overall economics of deep underground mining both for new deep shaft projects and for existing mining operations expanding to deeper orebodies. A research and development program has been initiated to evaluate the suitability of a fully synthetic rope for the mine hoisting application.

"It is a widely held view that in the 21st century, the mining industry will be dominated by a relatively small number of large companies, truly global in scope and internationally staffed (Gooding, 1997). Interestingly enough, most of the exploration and exploitation activities are being carried out by junior and major mining companies from common law jurisdictions in civil law countries, in particular in Latin America, where in recent years, the region has ranked first as a destination for exploration dollars, thanks to the reforms undertaken by some countries to amend their legal framework to attract foreign investment. From a lawyer’s point of view, this is where the main challenge lies: how to bridge the gap between the two legal systems.In order to avoid pitfalls, common law lawyers should be more diligent and proactive when dealing with civil law jurisdictions, given the different systems of law, standards, traditions and customs. Common law lawyers cannot be expected to be well-versed in civil law but they should not be completely unfamiliar with it either. A balance should be struck to ensure clients’ needs are professionally taken care of and that common law requirements and standards are met."

"The application of various hydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical and electrochemical processes in the extraction, purification and production of radioactive metals as well as the use of various materials, ego metals and alloys, ceramics, polymers, etc. in the process, construction and handling equipment in the nuclear industry has generated a large stockpile of radioactively contaminated waste material and scrap metal which can not be directly discarded, recycled or considered for long-term storage due to its volume and potential hazards, without the separation of radionuclides. This paper reviews the emerging methods that have been investigated and suggested for dealing with some of these wastes and scrap material.The separation technologies studied for the recovery of radioactive components from the pyrometallurgical and electrochemical processing wastes have been discussed in details with results from some of the recent theoretical and physical modeling work as well as the data obtained from the actual waste treatment. Specific processes shall be described in terms of its advantages and limitations. These emerging separation technologies are being considered by the US Department of Energy as alternatives for dealing with the issues of environmental management [EM] and decontamination and decommissioning [D&D].IntroductionThe high temperature carbothermic or metallothermic smelting reduction methods for metal production are associated with the generation of significant quantity of waste as slags, flue dusts, sludges, residues, effluent salts etc. Certain hydrometallurgical processes also generate lots of aqueous waste due to the inherent nature of the technique. Also, the gas-based reduction processes are not applicable to many stable metal compounds, such as alumina, titania, beryllia, lanthanide and actinide oxides, etc. due to thermodynamic considerations. All these methods cause substantial environmental hazard. There is a need to develop alternative processes which have low waste or ideally a ""zero-waste"" generation.Pyrochemical processes using molten salts provide a unique opportunity for the extraction and refining of many reactive and valuable metals either directly from the beneficiated ore (aluminum, beryllium, neodymium, plutonium, uranium, etc.) or from other process effluent that contain reactive metal compounds. The processes reduce metal compounds electrolytically (A12O 3 and BeCI2) on a carbon anode or by calciothermic reduction (Po, Nd). The by-product, in the latter case, is a calcium oxide saturated halide salt. The waste-treatment to recycle the halide has to be done as a separate step or stored as a contaminated waste. A successful separation technology can provide a new insight to the waste minimization strategy for the nuclear industry."

THE atmosphere, which plays such an important part in the manufacture of iron and steel, is the most variable element involved in its several processes; and particularly is this true of the blast-furnace process, which consumes air in large quantities. At no time since the blast-furnace became an important and widely used apparatus-even when it was operated in the most crude manner-have the variations in composition of the raw materials used been as frequent and as great as the variations in humility of the atmosphere. Important, improvements have been made in the blast furnace and its accessories, such as the hot-blast stoves, the increase in size and change in the shape of the furnace, more efficient blowing engines, the increased protection given to the bosh walls, and the careful preparation of&apos; the raw material, all of which have exerted a pronounced influence on the furnace-operations from a metallurgical standpoint. But during the past eight years little advance has been made in this direction; the fuel-consumption has not diminished, nor has there been any material increase in production. Within that period, however, there has been witnessed the greatest development in appliances for the economical handling of material. So complete has been the work in this direction, that, except in isolated cases, in this country at least., a further extension does not hold out much promise of a satisfactory return on the investment required. It seemed that, with the exception of the gas-engine, we had about reached the limit, for like a strong wall, the atmosphere, with its humility as variable to-clay as when first blown into a primitive blast-furnace, appeared to stand as a Barrier to

Compania Minera Disputada de las Condes (CMD), an Exxon Affiliate stewarded by Exxon Coal and Minerals Company, operates two&apos; copper mines and concentrators in Chile. Pilot plant studies were initiated in 1984 using a 0.46 meter and a 0.91 meter diameter column for the cleaning of copper concentrate. This eventually resulted in the design and operation of a rectangular column with an area of 6.8 m2, increasing the final copper concentrate grade from about 30% to almost 32&apos;1. Cu without any loss in copper recovery. Evaluation studies of a commercial bubble generator as against the previously used filter cloth air sparger are now in progress.

The rotary gas fired reheating furnace used by the American Zinc Oxide Co. at Columbus, Ohio for Therotarygasfiredreheatingfurnacerefining lead-free zinc oxide is described. The outstanding features of this operation are that the color of the zinc oxide is greatly improved, sulphur is eliminated, and cadmium arethatrecovered without densifying the product to an objectionable degree. IN 1919 Leland S. Wemple obtained a patent for a process of reheating zinc oxide wherein the "coarsening of grain due to excessive heating was avoided." He taught in his specification that if solid carbonaceous material, such as lamp black, was added to the zinc oxide in proper amounts prior to reheating, objectionable sulphur compounds could be removed and the color would accordingly be improved and no objectionable densification would occur because of the relatively low temperature required. The situation that made this invention imperative was the newly opened zinc oxide plant of the American Zinc, Lead & Smelting Co. in Hills-boro, Ill. This was one of the early Western Type American Process zinc oxide operations. Characteristic of all of these early Western operations using Tri-State and Western ores was the great difficulty encountered in obtaining a product low enough in sulphur to compete with the Eastern Type American Process zinc oxides which were made from ores containing very low sulphur percentages. Wemple demonstrated that the refining process of his invention produced a superior color and although this was true and a most welcome feature, the primary purpose of the early refining operations at Hillsboro was to reduce substantially the high sulphur content of the crude zinc oxide. Although many and varied attempts had been made for refining zinc oxide none of the processes had a commercial history of any consequence until Wemple&apos;s invention became standard practice for the American Zinc, Lead & Smelting Co. in 1919 and their operations have been unique in that substantially all of their lead-free zinc oxide has been reheated since the first installation at Hillsboro. This process has become known in the industry as refining. The furnace developed by Wemple and continued in use by the company from 1919 until 1943 was unusual and merits some consideration by way of review in this paper. The furnace was essentially a double hearth coal-fired muffle furnace with a mechanical raking system consisting of a central shaft supporting six rabble arms in each muffle. The untreated or "crude" zinc oxide was fed onto the outer rim of the top muffle, moved to the center where it dropped to the lower muffle and progressed to the outer rim where it was discharged into an alloy screw conveyor. The retention in this furnace was extremely short, about 5 min, and the shallow zinc oxide bed on the hearths of the muffles was being continuously turned by the fast moving rabbles. Soft coal was burned on the grates below the lower muffle and the long yellow flame necessary to carry the heat around both muffles resulted in a very inefficient combustion of the fuel. The temperature of the top of the lower muffle seldom exceeded 65 °C although the oxide itself often reached 700°C before discharge. The capacity of this furnace was approximately 1/2 ton per hr. In our plant at Columbus it was necessary to keep four of these furnaces running in parallel to take care of the production because, as mentioned above, every pound of zinc oxide produced during these 24 yr passed through one of these refining furnaces. An essential part of this refining operation was the use of carbonaceous material admixed with the zinc oxide fed to the furnaces. Between 1 and 2 pct of a bran produced in the processing of cotton seed was added to all zinc oxide charged to the furnaces. The bran ignited on the top hearth and was still burning when the charge fell from the top hearth to the bottom hearth making a cascade of sparks. The rapid turning of the zinc oxide caused these particles of bran to flash on the hearths behind each rabble; but the combustion, of necessity, had to be complete by the time the charge reached the outer rim of the bottom hearth, otherwise the finished product would be contaminated with the charred particles of bran which would give the zinc oxide an unsatisfactory color. Although this operation was initiated to reduce objectionable sulphur percentages, as time went on new properties of the product were appreciated which made advisable continuing the refining process long after other methods of sulphur reduction became known in the industry. The particle size and particle size distribution, the absence of colloidal fines and perhaps a unique surface condition gave this product an outstanding performance when used in paints. The Wemple furnaces installed in Columbus in 1919 had to be rebuilt frequently and were extravagant in the use of fuel. The raking mechanism and the muffles required excessive maintenance expense and as the furnaces wore out the problem arose whether to continue along this line or to explore the possibilities of obtaining similar or better results in the simpler and more commonly used rotary furnace. Com o crescente zelo ambiental, os polímeros biodegradáveis ganharam importante papel no mercado mundial. Em especial, o amido é um destaque por apresentar preço baixo e alta demanda, contudo possui grande fragilidade mecânica e os seus filmes são muitos hidrofílicos. Outro importante polímero biodegradável é o poli(ácido lático) que possui, alta resistência mecânica e transparência, quando comparado com o amido termoplástico, permitindo sua aplicação em embalagens alimentícias. Contudo, o PLA ainda possui custo elevado, quando comparado ao amido e até commodities, como o PET, PP e PE. Estudos com algodão, material em grande produção e baixo custo, retratam ganhos nas propriedades mecânicas sem perda da biodegradabilidade em compósitos. Assim, este trabalho objetivou preparar, por meio de homogeneizador termocinético KMixer e prensa térmica, placas de compósitos de PLA contendo amido (0, 3 e 5% m/m) e fibras de algodão in natura processadas (0, 10 e 20% m/m). As amostras foram caracterizados por espectroscopia na região do infravermelho com transformada de Fourier (FTIR), ângulo de contato estático e ensaios mecânicos (módulo de Young, resistência à tração e alongamento na ruptura). As análises mostraram que a adição de fibra de algodão compensa a perda de resistencia à tração ocasionada pela adição de TPS. Tanto a fibra como o amido aumentaram a molhabilidade do compósito.

"A new office complex is being constructed within 25m of the Hudson River in New Jersey. The project, about 140m by 100m, will include 4 basements under the entire footprint. The perimeter was to be secured by a 0.8m thick diaphragm wall, laterally supported by high capacity tieback anchors to rock. Columns were to be supported on footings or piers to rock at a nominal bearing pressure of 3.8MPa at depths up to 17m. Although some variation in rock quality was observed in borings, a substantial vertical seam of weathered and/or decomposed rock, 1 to 2 meters wide by as much as 8 meters deep, was encountered during construction necessitating field redesign. In some locations, the seam dipped below rock that is more competent. Footings were redesigned for support on drilled caissons, or soft rock was excavated and replaced with concrete necessitating a reduction in bearing pressure of the footings by one half. The tower covering the south half of the site was topped out in 2002 and the garage levels in the north half of the site were completed in 2003.PROJECT DESCRIPTIONIn September 1999, a major investment company began the due diligence process to evaluate a property on the shore of the Hudson River in Jersey City, New Jersey for a new multi-use complex. The site offers a spectacular view of lower Manhattan directly across the river from the site of the former World Trade Center. The site, covering two city blocks, was previously occupied by manufacturing and office facilities of Colgate-Palmolive.The building footprint is approximately 140m by 100m, the southern half of which is occupied by a 260m tall office tower, shown in Fig. 1. As of this writing, design of the structure for the northern half of the site has not been finalized, but it is expected to comprise an 11-story office building. A glass-covered atrium will occupy the street that formerly separated the two blocks. As part of the due diligence process and preliminary design evaluation, alternatives were considered to accommodate various numbers of parking places, both above and below existing grade. A major consideration for below grade parking is the proximity of the Hudson River some 25m east of the east building line."
