"The Western Cape Mineral Processing Facility (WCMPF) is a collaborative educational initiative between the Departments of Chemical Engineering of the University of Cape Town, the University of Stellenbosch and the Cape Technikon. The primary objective of the WCMPF is to facilitate the education, development and graduation of suitably qualified engineering graduates and diplomates for the mining industry. The WCMPF consists of academics and Technical Officers in the Departments of Chemical Engineering of the three tertiary institutions. The Technical Officers are usually metallurgists, with several years of industrial experience. The main objective of the Technical Officers is to improve the practical education of mineral processing students. In addition, the Technical Officers are responsible for organising an annual mineral processing student field trip for students from all three tertiary educational institutions. In recent years the WCMPF has embarked on a number of additional initiatives aimed at improving the quality of mineral processing education. These include the development of several new pilot plant practicals, an initiative in pyrometallurgy, the introduction of novel ‘end to end’ or ‘integrated’ practicals and the use of mineral processing simulation packages to complement the practical training.The WCMPF has been functioning for well over a decade and, by virtue of this, might be considered a successful collaborative educational initiative. The WCMPF has played a key role in the education of over five hundred mineral processing graduates and diplomates. During this time period, the WCMPF has gained a body of internal knowledge which might be of benefit to other educational institutions, viz."

In the Florida phosphate industry, fatty acid collectors are used to separate phosphate ore from silica during the rougher flotation stage. However, the presence of multivalent ions (in particular Ca++) in the processing water has been reported to result in the activation of silica with respect to oleate adsorption, rendering it floatable. Hence, adequate separation may not be achieved during the rougher flotation stage. In this study, the direct measurement of surface inter-action forces via atomic force microscopy was used to delineate possible mechanisms for calcium activation under phosphate flotation conditions at oleate/calcium concentrations both above and below the calcium dioleate precipitation limit.

"A modular gold processing unit (MGPU) was designed, installed and operated over an eight-month period by RSW-Béroma at the Granada mine located near Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. A description of the project geology, plant set up, as well as exploitation results, including productivity and profitability curves, are given for a small-scale mining operation in comparison with larger ones. IntroductionSmall-scale mining (SSM) is a widespread activity in Africa, Mexico, Central America and South America, where numerous small mineral deposits are exploited manually or by semimechanized methods. On the other hand, SSM is almost absent in Canada, where the mining industry traditionally exploits large deposits, using concentration plants with capacities of many thousands of tonnes per day. However, many small gold (and other metallic or industrial mineral) deposits are known in Canada. Their reserves are too small to justify the cost related to the construction of a standard mill and, if they are remote from a custom milling facility, they remain unexploited. With this in mind, RSW-Béroma has developed the modular gold processing unit (MGPU) that allows the profitable exploitation of small mineral deposits. The MGPU is the perfect tool for SSM and its main advantages are a much lower capital cost than a standard mill and its portability, which makes it easy to transport and reinstall on another site, once the exploitation of a small deposit is terminated. The denomination MGPU will be used hereafter in the text as it was primarily designed for gold deposits, although it must be kept in mind that this portable plant can be adapted to other mineral substances."

At the beginning of the 20 century, British Columbia produced a wide variety of quality dimension stone products for both domestic and foreign markets. The industry flourished until the 1930s when most of the producing quarries closed as a result of the Depression. During the 1990s, British Columbia experienced the resurgent North American dimensional stone production trend. The industry benefited from increased prospecting activity and from substantial new investment in processing equipment, particularly in the granite sector. These activities resulted in new quarry developments, the reopening of abandoned quarries such as on Granite and Fox Islands <www.quadrastone.com>, and a renaissance in downstream value-added activities. British Columbia has reestablished itself as an important, reliable and innovative source of high-quality stone products.

If in a vertical, downward miscible displacement, the transition zone between the displacing and displaced fluids is neglected, a criterion for stable displacement can be obtained by considering a small hypothetical protrusion of one of the fluids into the other. This criterion leads to the definition of the well-known critical rate, uc = kg p/p. The consideration is further extended by taking into account the transition zone that develops as a result of diffusion and mixing. A generalization of the previous criterion leads to the definition of another characteristic rate, the stable rate, which in actual miscible drives will be less than the critical rate. In such drives, the entire transition zone is stable at rates less than the stable rate. At rates between the stable and critical rates, the displacement is only partly stable, i.e. part of the transition zone adjacent to the displaced fluid is in an unstable position. From that part of the transition zone viscous lingers will develop. At rates greater than the critical rate the entire displacement is unstable and viscous lingers will develop more strongly. Results of laboratory experiments are in agreement with the expected behavior based on the theoretically deduced stability of the displacement. INTRODUCTION The simplest form of miscible drive in an oil-bearing formation is the injection of a fluid that is completely miscible* with the oil under reservoir conditions. In general, such a fluid, a solvent for example, is less dense and less viscous than the oil present in the formation. If it is injected into a horizontal homogeneous layer, gravitational forces will lead to the formation of a gravity tongue of solvent in the upper part of the layer and the adverse solvent-oil viscosity ratio will cause viscous fingers to develop. If, however, the solvent is injected up-structure into ,a dipping layer, gravity has a favorable effect, because it tends to keep the less dense solvent up-structure. Tongue formation and viscous fingering are consequently reduced and it is even possible that they will be suppressed completely. Viscous fingering and gravity tonguing are the consequences of the instability of the displacement. A stable displacement cannot result in growing viscous fingers and/or growing gravity tongues. Since large amounts of oil can be bypassed if there is viscous fingering and/or gravity tonguing, the stability of a miscible drive is very important with respect to the recovery efficiency of the drive. The stability is of particular importance in miscible-slug drives, as it determines how quickly the miscible slug between the displaced and displacing fluids will be distorted and broken up, after which the drive is no longer completely miscible. Stability is thus a most important factor in determining the success of a miscible drive, and it is considered that the aspects of stability considered in this paper will make a useful contribution to existing theories. Consideration is given only to vertical downward displacements, in which no gravity tongues can develop and which are therefore simpler than downward displacements in sloping layers. THEORY CRITERION FOR STABLE DISPLACEMENT Let us consider a vertical column of a homogeneous permeable medium saturated with oil. A solvent less dense and less viscous than the oil is injected at the top of the column at a constant rate; in the column the velocities of oil and solvent are assumed to be uniform. Diffusion and mixing of oil and solvent will at first be neglected, i.e. we assume that solvent and oil are divided by a sharp interface. An additional assumption is that the interface is horizontal. The Bureau of Mines investigated the effects of various additions of rare-earth metals or rare-earth oxides on the mechanical properties of cast and wrought plain-carbon steels. Rare-earth metals, as misch metal, were added to medium-carbon steel in amounts to 0.70 weight-percent; rare-earth oxides, as a commercial mixture, were added in amounts to 1.50 weight-percent. The melting and casting of conditioned steels were done in a vacuum-induction furnace, to avoid formation of oxides from the melting atmosphere and to pro-vide better control over chemical composition. At room temperature, data for tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness of cast and wrought steels were obtained by standard testing equipment and procedures. Impact tests were conducted on as-cast steel specimens. The greatest amount of tensile ductility and impact strength was obtained in as-cast steel with 0.50 to 0.70 weight-percent misch metal additions. No significant improvement on mechanical properties was indicated in wrought steels containing rare-earth metal additions in the range from 0.10 to 0.70 weight-percent. In general, the rare-earth oxide additions up to 1.50 weight-percent had little effect on the tensile properties of steel in the cast, wrought and annealed, or wrought and normalized condition.

Shortly after the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939 we passed by Congress, the Bureau of Mines was authorized to begin a program of investigation of domestic sources of strategic minerals. Since World War I, the Philipsburg district had been virtually the only one in the United States that was producing manganese on a commercial scale. Consequently, the district was among the first to he investigated. During the summer of 1939, the Geological Survey mapped the geology and ore deposits of the district. In late July 1939 the writer examined the district for the Bureau of Mines. On the basis of this examination and of the work performed by the Geological Survey, the Bureau of Mines diamond-drilled at several properties in the district during the summer of 1940. This report reviews the mining history and geology of the district, and presents the factual data obtained by diamond drilling.

This paper presents an evaluation of tailings dam incidents from the 1994 USCOLD Tailings Dam Committee report. Comparisons are also made with water storage dam incidents from USCOLD reports and recent tailings dam incidents. The evaluation results show that tailings dam incidents are due to a number of factors including overtopping, static and seismic instability, seepage and internal erosion, and foundation conditions, and that no particular type of tailings dam or operational condition is more susceptible to incidents. In addition, the results confirm that tailings dams should be located, designed, operated, and reclaimed with a thorough knowledge of site conditions, mill operation, site monitoring, and tailings characteristics.

The ore reserve modeling of stratiform uranium deposits to be mined by selective underground mining methods must be done with consideration of the erratic nature of the ore forming processes that produced the mineralization. Estimation methods that model the uranium grade as a smooth transition between high grade and low grade drillhole intercepts tend to greatly overestimate the ore tonnage. Care must be taken to first establish realistic ore pod geometries and then estimate the grade of the reserve units within the pods.

THE increasing use of aluminum and its alloys in commercial fields has demanded a better understanding of their machining properties. This fact is exemplified by problems that have arisen in the automotive and airplane industries, but many in other fields might be cited. As pure aluminum and its alloys in their various commercial conditions show appreciable differences in their machining properties, it is not surprising that quite divergent solutions have been offered for the machining problems encountered. However, if the fundamental requirements of the most suitable cutting tools for these metals are understood, these machining problems lend themselves more readily to satisfactory solutions. Since the machining of free cutting brass and mild steel is understood by most persons accustomed to working these metals, it may serve our purpose better to first make a general comparison of the tools more commonly used in machining these metals with the tools most suitable for machining aluminum, then proceed to a more specific discussion of the individual tools. COMPARISON OF CUTTING TOOLS Cutting tools commonly used for machining free cutting brass usually have little, if any, top and side rake; they are ground on a medium to coarse abrasive wheel and used without any cutting compound or with a cutting compound that has a paraffin base. Those ordinarily used for steel have some top and side rake, are usually ground on a medium to fine abrasive wheel, and are often used with soluble-oil cutting compounds. The proper tools for aluminum and its alloys should have appreciably more side and top rake than the tools for cutting steel; should have very keen edges obtained by grinding with fine or very fine abrasive wheels supplemented in many cases by hand stoning with an oil-stone; and should be used with suitable cutting compounds whenever possible. In many cases, tools suitable for machining aluminum and its alloys are not appreciably different from tools commonly used for cutting hardwoods. The front clearance of a tool most suitable for machining aluminum and its alloys should be about 6°, the top rake from 30° to 50°, making the total angle of the cutting edge of the tool from 35° to 55°. The Discovery Expedition of St. Charles, MO chose to build its two-story museum in the flood plain of the Missouri River, near the starting point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Should the lower level be inundated at flood stage, plans call for the replica riverboats to be moved by trailer to higher ground. The museum&apos;s design required an open span structure with heavily loaded footing or piles. Spread footings could not be used due to the compressible soil profile. The location, in a historical district, precluded dynamically driven piles. Sixty-three uncased Helical Pulldown Micropiles were driven to the bearing stratum to support the museum with minimum disturbance. There were no spoils to dispose of during construction and the piles were completed in eight working days with minimum impact to the environment and neighborhood. The maximum working load required was 84,000 pounds (374kN). Test results are given in the form of installing torque.

The paper describes the advanced grinding control system implemented at Newmont Ahafo gold mine, Ghana in 2009 and 2010. It shows how the different components of the Advanced Process Control (APC) system cooperate for increasing plant performance. The SABC circuit processes hard rock from different pits mixed with a variable proportion of oxides. The control strategy is designed to address specific disturbances, including start/stops of pebble crushers, unavailability of oxides, changes in rock size distribution resulting from segregation in the stockpile, and changes in ore type and hardness. The system consists of an expert system per se with extensive use of fuzzy logic, supplemented by an online dynamic model of the process used as a soft sensor, a VisioRock? rock size measurement system over SAG mill feed before addition of recycled pebbles, and an AudioMill? system to analyze the SAG mill sound and detect impacts on liners. All these components are embedded in the same OCS© software platform, which, among other benefits, makes it easy to support the entire system remotely. The paper details the physical constraints and the variables that are manipulated. It describes the control strategy and the contribution of each component of the system. It also describes the project implementation and the performance of the system. In addition to a strong involvement and support of management, the very good acceptance of the operators has been facilitated by the remote access system that made it possible to immediately modify the system each time it was needed during the baby sitting phase. The system made it possible to increase gold production significantly through increases in tonnage and recovery thanks to a better control of the grind size through a stabilization of the secondary ball milling circuit and an improvement of the operating conditions of the classifying cyclones.

A majority of continuous mining machines employ a water spray system and a machine mounted flooded-bed scrubber to suppress and capture dust during coal mining. These machine mounted dust control systems must be designed to function within the localized face ventilation system at the mining section to control both dust and methane. Spray systems can impede or improve the scrubber effectiveness in controlling dust or methane at the mining face. Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the effect of spray type, spray pressure, machine body blocking sprays, and scrubber airflow on dust and gas levels while using a 12.2 m (40 ft) exhaust ventilation curtain setback from the face. These experiments were conducted with the mining machine positioned at the end of a simulated 6.1 m (20 ft) sump and slab cut. Results indicate that the hollow cone nozzles with blocking sprays best complemented the flooded-bed scrubber performance in an exhaust ventilation system. This external spray system notably reduced dust and gas levels on the off-curtain side of the mining machine for both the sump and slab cut as compared to the flat spray nozzles. Higher scrubber airflows reduced dust and gas levels on the curtain side and in the return of the continuous mining machine. The remote operator position, located on the off curtain side and parallel to the inlet end of the exhaust curtain, sustained the most stable and lowest dust levels around the mining machine.

"For a good many years the Bureau of Mines and various state mining experi¬ment stations have endeavored to develop some method of utilizing the immense deposits of lignite in the United States. Work in relent year has indicated that the best method of this is to drive off the moisture and most of the volatile water from the lignite in some form of carbonizing apparatus leaving a residue high in fixed carbon and low in moisture and volatile matter, which by briquetting can be made into a high-grade fuel. The earlier forms of carbonizing equipment tried were complicated, costly to build and keep in repair, and could not be operated intermittently without being seriously damaged. During the year 1922, however the Bureau of Mines devised a very simple carbonizing oven which produces a uniformly well carbonized product. This oven is essentially a vertical shaft with means for supplying raw lignite at the top and discharging the carbonized limited at the lower end. Air in regulated amount is admitted to the shaft at two horizons, and a zone of combustion maintained through which the column of lignite passes. The lignite is thus carbonized by construction of its contained matter and a small proportion of its fixed carbon, leaving most of the fixed carbon in the carbonized product or ""char"". The degree of carbonization can be closely controlled by varying the volume of air supplied to the oven and the rate of travel of the charre down the shaft.The ""lignite char"" produced is a soft material resembling charcoal more than coal or coke, but somewhat harder than charcoal. The deformation mechanisms of a iron-phosphorus alloys were compared at 20oand —196°C. Alloying with phosphorus increases the resistance to slip, but has little effect on the resistance to twinning. The stress for onset of twinning is nearly independent of temperature, but there is an increasing tendency for cleavage along (112) twin boundaries with decreasing temperature and increasing phosphorus content. FIVE iron-phosphorus alloys and one high-purity iron (0.004 pct C, 0.004 pct N, 0.05 pct O) were vacuum melted and cast, then homogenized for 6 hr at 1100oC and water-quenched. Single crystals were cleaved from the coarse grains produced in this manner. The hardness was measured* on polished (100) surfaces of the crystals at 20" and -196°C. Laue back-reflection patterns indicated a deviation of not more than 3 deg from coincidence of the {100} plane with the surface. The deformation mechanisms were studied by relief effects on the polished surfaces. Yield points in compression (0.5 pct offset) were measured with polycrystalline material. At 20°C the addition of phosphorus to a iron leads to a change from slip to twinning as the main deformation mechanism, Figs. 1(a), (b). Between 2 and 4 at. pct P slip and twinning occur simultaneously. In alloys with more than 4 at. pct P twinning is the main deformation mechanism and slip was observed only in the neighborhood of twin intersections. All cracks at 20oC were on (100) planes, some initiated by twins.&apos; From measurements made at-196oC, hardness and yield points of all the alloys were nearly constant and the same as the hardness of high phosphorus alloys that deformed by twinning at 20°C, Figs. 2 and 3. In the high-purity iron, plastic deformation at -196°C occurred by both slip and twinning, but deformation in the iron-phosphorus alloys appeared to be entirely by twinning. In the high phosphorus alloys a large number of cracks formed along the (112) twin boundaries and at intersections of twins, in addition to the (100) cleavage, Fig. 1(c). The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER ACT) established a Technical Study Panel (The Panel) to provide recommendations on the utilization of belt air and new technology that may be available for increasing the fire resistance properties of conveyor belt used in underground coal mines. The Panel Report recommended use of the Belt Evaluation Laboratory Test (BELT) as the method for testing and approval of flame resistant conveyor belts used in underground coal mines. The research conducted to establish the correlation of the BELT with large-scale belt fire flammability tests was done using 36- to 42-in wide conveyor belt. Due to today?s coal haulage capacity, the mining industry is using 72-in and wider conveyor belts. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to determine if the BELT will also qualify wider belts as fire resistant for use in underground coal mines. This paper describes the results of recent experiments comparing results from using the BELT and the large-scale tests for six different belts.

The kinetics of fine and ultrafine particles in conventional mechanical flotation cells are limited (Feng and Aldrich, 1999; Trahar, 1981; Wang et al, 2016). Accordingly, even limited recoveries with such machines require long residence times. Theoretical investigations into the rate of capture of fine particles by flotation, have indicated that a key parameter is the rate of shear in the fluid surrounding the bubbles and the particles. Achieving fast flotation rates of ultrafines requires a new method of bringing the particles and bubbles into contact, utilising the beneficial properties of highly dissipative flows to break through the water boundary layer. In 2010, a new type of flotation cell known as the Concorde Cell was described, in which bubbles and particles are brought together in a sonic shock wave (Jameson, 2010). Earlier research had shown that when a dispersion of fine bubbles in liquid passed through a converging nozzle at the local speed of sound, the resulting shock wave downstream generates a mass of even finer bubbles in the flow as it passes through the shock wave. The fluid within the shock wave is highly turbulent, and an environment is created that is very favourable to particle-bubble collision and capture. In this paper, we briefly describe the Concorde Flotation Cell and give examples of its use.

The development of the modern State and the growth of capitalism involves a complex process of interaction between cross-cutting structural dimension: first between politics and economics and, second, between market and hierarchy. Central to such developments are political economies of scale. Mineral specialization in the Third World developed within the framework of an international extension on oligopolistic structure of the advanced capitalist economies of Western Europe and North America. Up to the late 1960s, the world mineral and metallurgical industry was closely controlled by a handful of Western mining and industrial groups. To the extent that, foreign control of the mining sector was seen in the Third World producing countries both as the essence of foreign domination and as its major symbol. In some newly industrializing countries, the State took a more direct role in tying the economy and society together. Central to this process was the growth of large-scale finance capital. From early 1959to the mid-1970s, metal consumption in industrial countries expanded well beyond their domestic mineral endowments. And a free access to Third World minerals was a major element of the economic dynamism of these countries throughout that period. With the change in the characteristics of international investment, Africa has become less important as an outlet for capital exports of European countries. Actually, the African continent now receives only a very minor share of direct foreign investments of Western enterprises. International political economy is concerned first of all with the relationship between the economic and political domains across territorial boundaries. Second, attention should be drawn to the role of the State as the focus of decision-making in a system of competitive States, that is in turn, interdependent with a trans-national market economy in which mining and metallurgy are essential activities that affect the politics of the State, and how this in turn, rebounds on the politics of the international system. Understanding the role of the State must go beyond the glib pronouncements on the ?national interest?. How, and whose interest, the ?national interest? is determined, is precisely the problem. This implies a third theoretical problem that must be addressed: the linkage between the domestic and international domains (or levels of analysis), given that political-economic processes clearly cut across the lines of political decision-making constituted by the institutional structures of the State. Situating the State and economic interests within this vast ?state-society? complex that we call the global order will be a crucial problem for any theoretical approach that involves mining and metallurgy.

The Modified Zincex® Process, developed by Técnicas Reunidas, is highly flexible dealing with a wide range of pregnant leach solutions. No matter if those solutions are produced from primary or secondary raw materials, and/or are based on conventional leaching, pressure leaching, heap leaching or bio leaching the result is always high-purity zinc product. The zinc solvent extraction unit within the process is a very effective barrier for impurities and a buffer for the composition of the pregnant liquor. This unit achieves an extremely pure aqueous extract that can be converted into different final products. All of them are characterized by fulfilling the highest purity standards. Also, there is the possibility to adapt the global process to a wide range of pregnant liquor compositions and various production capacities up to a zinc production limit over 150 000 t/a with a single solvent extraction plant.

The authors have accumulated published data on residual soil and rock tunnels in the United States and have compared it to transit tunneling experience in Atlanta, Georgia, and tunnels in other soil and rock conditions. Two 6.1 meter (20 foot) diameter shield driven, compressed air tunnels were constructed for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) connecting the Five Points Station (central hub) with the Peachtree Center Station (first station on the north line). Because of the historic multi-story structures above the tunnels and the variety of subsurface conditions, a comprehensive ground monitoring and observation program was conducted. Conclusions are drawn regarding residual soil and rock ground response due to tunneling. Comparisons are made to ground response due to tunneling in other soil and rock conditions.
