The Don River & Central Waterfront Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel (CBT) Project in Toronto will extend approximately 10.5 km from Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant west under Lake Shore Boulevard, north under Bayview Avenue and east through the Don River park area to the Coxwell Ravine Park. The tunnel is currently being mined by using a shielded dual-mode tunnel boring machine (open and close) capable of operating in EPB mode and lined by using a precast concrete segmental tunnel linear with an internal diameter of 6,300 mm and external diameter of 6,900 mm. The CBT is expected to be excavated mainly through shale bedrock of the Georgian Bay Formation, at approximately 50 meters deep. The tunnel crosses a buried bedrock valley in two locations, in the southern portion of the alignment, adjacent to the Don River, and at the northern portion of the alignment approaching the CX-1 shaft. In these two locations, the bedrock cover is expected to be less than 6 meters. The risk of encountering weathered bedrock, significant ground water inflows or surficial soil deposits through these buried valleys was identified during the design phase. The contract required the TBM to be designed with the ability to probe drill ahead of the TBM and convert to EPB mode if necessary, to cross this area. This paper will discuss the additional exploration that was performed by the contractor to identify the extent of this buried valley, the plan going into the zone of potential weathered shale, and the actual conditions encountered.

"Numerical modeling has been used extensively to assess the stability of surface and underground mines. Tabular, steeply dipping ore bodies are generally mined out by open stoping methods with delayed backfill. Cemented rockfill (CRF) is employed as a backfill material for narrow vein deposits with low production rates. Sublevel stoping methods with delayed backfill are employed to mine out steeply dipping ore bodies. Backfill is exposed to blast-induced vibrations and dynamic loading due to loss of confinement, which could lead to backfill failures. Backfill failures could influence the operating cost of a mining stope and the productivity of the entire mining project. This work shows a detailed overview of the factors contributing to backfill failure. A detailed literature review is presented along with case studies of longhole stoping operations from the Canadian Shield region for this work. The backfilled stopes are analyzed with the finite difference code FLAC3D. The literature review shows that the factors primarily responsible for fill failure are the strength of backfill, stope geometry, mining sequence, and blast-induced vibrations. INTRODUCTION Sublevel stoping methods with delayed backfill are popular in Canadian hardrock and metal mines. Backfill facilitates ground control and greater recovery of ore with pillar mining. It reduces wall slough, thus decreasing ore dilution from adjacent walls. The production of cemented rockfill (CRF) is simple; rock aggregates are mixed together with cement slurry and then placed in a mined-out stope. CRF has a low water content, thus it requires no additional drainage unlike some other backfill. Low water-to-cement ratio enables faster curing rate, hence a faster mining cycle can be achieved (Annor, 1999; Hassani and Archibald, 1998; McKay and Duke, 1989). CRF is generally placed in stopes from the upper sill drift using a truck or a load haul dump machine. Some of the problems associated with CRF are the moderate to high operational cost, the difficulty to get a tight filling, and segregation. Backfill failure is a product of many factors, such as cementation, particle size distribution, placement method employed, water quality, segregation, and blast-induced vibrations. The problem of segregation in aggregates has been observed when aggregate is dumped from a backfill raise (Meech, 2012; Indiana DOT, 2013). Segregation becomes unavoidable when the aggregates are not properly sized (Yu and Counter, 1983; Stone, 2007; Yu, 1989). The exposed backfill zones will contribute to ore dilution due to backfill when subjected to dynamic loading due to fill failures. This paper presents a detailed literature review and numerical modeling results of a mine backfill, along with case studies from longhole stoping operations. The backfilled stopes are analyzed with the finite difference code FLAC3D (Itasca, 2017). The literature review shows that the primary factors responsible for fill failure are the strength of backfill, geometry of stope, sequence of mining, and the vibrations induced by blasting operations."

The “BIOMOre” project aims to prove the technical feasibility of indirect in situ bioleaching of sulfide minerals contained in a deep underground deposit, by bringing together the disciplines required to make a success. The underground location in Poland was provided by project partner KGHM inside an operating copper mine. Key components of this project were the design and construction of a pilot plant, and its operation in an underground environment. This project also included a ∼250 t (100 m3) fragmented rock reactor hydraulically connected to the pilot plant. The pilot plant consisted of several tanks and pumps, a fluidised bed ferric iron generating bioreactor containing immobilised acidophilic iron oxidation biomass, and all the required instrumentation and utilities. Before the bioleaching phase could start, the rock reactor had to be flushed continuously firstly with water to remove chloride salts that are corrosive and also harmful for the bacteria used in the bioreactor, and secondly, with sulfuric acid solution to react with the carbonates present in the ore matrix. This paper summarizes the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of the pilot plant.

Pickling is the treatment of metal surfaces by removing oxide layer, rust, scale, inorganic contaminants or other impurities from ferrous metals, copper or precious metals. A strong inorganic acid such as hydrochloric acid is used for plain carbon or low alloy steel pickling. When the concentration of copper in the pickling solution exceeds about 100 mg/L, reversion may take place and randomly plating of copper onto the steel strips which causes visual incompatibility occur. Furthermore, efficiency of pickling decreases with the increase of copper content. The reversion may be delayed to higher Cu concentrations by adding fresh acid to the line. Increased acid consumption only delays the time to discard the solution but increases the cost and hazardous nature effect on the environment. An experimental electrochemical procedure has been conducted to remove copper from pickling solution to reduce the concentration below 100 mg/L. Within this scope, effects of applied current density, copper concentration and electrolysis duration on copper deposition were studied. Current density was determined as the most effective parameter to remove copper from the regenerated pickling solutions of steel plants.

This report presents observations made by Bureau engineers regarding hydraulic-powered roof supports that are currently being used or have been used on nearly all operating longwalls in the United States, A comparative summary of specifications for various types of powered supports with a brief description of the mine conditions has been compiled to enable mining engineers and mine operators to readily evaluate the differences in design data. Some of the support data furnished in the field may vary from those listed in manufacturers' brochures because of the trend to customize various support components to meet specific mine conditions. A method of estimating support requirements for different assumed operating conditions is presented. Similar computations for specific mine conditions may be used to make preliminary estimates of support requirements.

The United States is rapidly depleting many of its most important minerals and fuels. The first two Annual Reports by the Secretary of the Interior, under the Mining and Minerals Policy Act of 1970, made us acutely aware that the natural resources that enabled this Nation to attain an unprecedented growth in terms of economic well-being, and to set an example of independent strength through the democratic process, are finite. Once they are depleted, large imports will be required. Simultaneously, competition for available supplies, especially of petroleum, is increasing in the expanding European and Japanese industrial communities and in the underdeveloped nations of the world. Even before the crisis of late 1973, the oil-producing nations of the world, principally in the Middle East, but including Canada and Latin America, were recognizing that the worldwide need for crude oil, petroleum products, and natural gas could be translated into an unprecedented economic bargaining position. Thus, the members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) raised the price of their crude twice during the first 6 months of 1973. By yearend the energy situation had be-come acute, and it seemed probable that regardless of current political developments, the era of cheap energy was over.

Prior tests by Dorn, where the strain rate in a tensile test was suddenly changed, have shown a small, but definite rate-history effect to exist. If this effect is neglected in the calculation of creep behavior from tensile results, an error should occur. This paper shows that this error is smaller than experimental scattering, and may be neglected. DORN1 has found a small but definite rate-history effect in the aluminum alloy 250 at liquid-nitrogen temperature using tensile tests with an abrupt rate change. "Novel rock breakage techniques are becoming more viable and attractive to industry. Microwave energy, as a thermal energy capable of inducing micro cracks through differential heating (therefore expansion) is a technology gaining considerable attention in mineral processing and ore comminution applications. Recently, the use of microwave radiation has been evaluated as a possible avenue for terrestrial and extra-terrestrial drilling applications as well as full face tunneling or rock breaking machines. As part of an overall research on use of microwave in rock breaking systems, the influence of microwave energy on the mechanical properties of common hard rock types as basalt has been investigated. The results revealed that microwave energy irradiation imposes micro and macro cracks to the surface of the rock being irradiated. In explosive free tunneling applications using TBM, jointed and cracked surface of rock eases the cutting process and increases penetration rate. The experimental setups have been simulated with the help of a multi-physics numerical modeling and the results have been compared with practical experiment. The wave propagation of microwave has been simulated and the distances where the power intensity is higher are identified. Experimental and simulation results underlined the potential impact of the use of microwave energy in underground or surface excavation applications such as mining and tunneling. This will also contribute economically when mine-to-mill operation is fully considered to improve the efficiency of rock crusher stages. INTRODUCTIONDuring hard rock breakage (i.e., separation of a piece of a rock from its parent deposit) in mining and civil applications, the performance of mechanical equipment such as tunnel boring machines (TBMs) is limited by high levels of bit wear and maintenance. Preweakening natural rock prior to breaking it by machine is one approach to lower bit wear and maintenance costs. Some preweakening methods apply heat directly or indirectly. For example, flame torch-assisted TBMs (Lauriello et al., 1974; Resource Technology, 1984) have been deemed economical in terms of equipment, but their feasibility is limited by high fuel consumption. Microwave energy could offer several advantages over the flame torch method: it does not produce emissions or increase fuel consumption (electricity source is available on the machine), and is easy to control (quick power on and off)."

(Hons.) in chemistry (1949) from the University of the Witwatersrand. Mr G. C. Thompson matriculated at Dale College in 1951. He then attended the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a B.8c. (Min. Eng.) in 1959. Mr P. T. Fewell was born and educated in the United Kingdom. After obtaining the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) in 1958 at Sheffield University, he emigrated to South Africa. DtP. R. Jochens, Pr. Eng., has been a member of Council since 1974, serving as President in 1980-1981.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a survey of eight shearer longwall operations to identify factors that affect respirable dust generation from longwall roof supports. The longwalls surveyed were in coal seams located in different geographic regions of the United States. Data were collected on mining (geologic) conditions, support design, operational characteristics, and amount of respirable dust generated from roof supports. Analysis indicated that mining conditions are the main factors that affect the generation of dust during roof support movement. Both roof strength and depth of cover above the coal seam showed relationships with the amount of support dust generated. Several practices are currently employed to effectively control roof support dust; however, some of these controls are limited. More research and development is needed to improve dust control technology for longwall roof supports.

Deep Vibro Techniques namely Vibro Compaction (VC) and Vibro Replacement (VR) are widely used in ground improvement to densify sands and strengthen cohesive soils. This paper describes the application of these techniques for the construction of 20 Ha Iron Ore Stockpile Yard with the maximum stockpile height of 14 m in Quang Ngai, Vietnam. The challenges of this project are to limit the stockpile allowable settlement and the surrounding pile’s lateral movement. The soil condition can be summarized as 12m – 18m thick of loose to medium dense SAND with qc around 5-18MPa and followed by 2.0 – 6.0 m thick soft clay with qc around 0.4 – 0.8MPa. Localized very dense sand layer was found. VR using stone columns were installed in soft clay layer while VC was adopted to densify sand layer. Additional shallow stone columns were built in sand strata to minimize pile top lateral movement. The post construction performance was verified by a large 6 m by 12 m plate load test (PLT). The predicted PLT deformation using Priebe’s improved properties for the VR will be presented and compared with the measured plate load test results.

Coal is the most widely used fossil fuel in the world, providing more than 25% of world?s electrical power. Since, the behavior of coal particles in crushing and grinding circuits, concentration operations, and solid-liquid separations is strongly dependent on size, a reliable and accurate measurement of particle size and particle size distribution (PSD) is a vital aspect in coal cleaning. This paper presents a method for the characterization of ground coal particles using image analysis. We utilized a machine vision (MV) approach that used a document scanner as the imaging device and a user-coded ImageJ plug-in that processed the image and automated the PSD analysis and output results in textual and graphical forms. This approach used a sum of volumes (SVolume) as weighting factor for particle length as the primary dimension of analysis and was successfully applied to ground coal. The plug-in was further improved for computational performance in this study. Mechanical sieving (MS) was also used to compare the MV results. MV results showed that the PSD of ground coal followed a uni-modal normal distribution, and the log-normal plot against particle size exhibited a linear trend for most of the range. MS results, however, had three linear segments, when the width-based sieving results were transformed to lengths by applying the shape factor (width/length), but a definite deviation between the PSD plots was observed. This study demonstrates successful application of the MV SVolume approach for PSD analysis of ground coal, which can be extended to similar particulate minerals and products. This paper presents only the highlights of previous research on the paleobotany of coal. The accumulated material has become so vast that a comprehensive review of all findings relating to paleobotany would be far too long. The fact that coal is derived from plants is now so well-known that no further comment is required, but knowledge of the mode of transformation of plant substances into coal is not so general. The plant matter goes first through processes of semirottins-, maceration, and elimination of certain material to form peat, which is then further transformed into coal. The first stage has been termed the "biochemical process," because the more important changes take place under the influence of micro-organisms. Near the end of the biochemical action an unconsolidated peat is formed. The second or "dynamochemical process," caused by the addition of superincumbent rock strata such as sandstones and shales and application of additional pressure and possibly heat through mountain-building forces, results in the formation of higher-rank coals ranging from brown coal to anthracite. These stages in trans-formation of plant material to coal have been described in previous reports.4 The main object of this paper is to bring to the notice of paleobotanists the fact that coal contains an enormous amount of material in a remarkably good state of preservation. Although some of the coal-forming matter has lost its identity, much of the original structure is retained. A large proportion of the coal, therefore, particularly of common bright coals, comprises constituents or components that invariably have retained some of the original plant structure, and many of these structures may be assigned to certain plants. The identity of these plants and of the remains forms the subject of this paper.

"Banded iron formations are the major iron source for producing high grade concentrate. BIF are generally lower grade and more difficult to extract. In order to know how best to process BIF ore, it require comprehensive knowledge on ore bodies even in the early stages of the mining process. Geometallurgy combines geological and mineral processing information and allows for higher flexibility in response to changes in the plant feed when mining different parts of the ore. This can lead to economic benefits, owing to improved plant operation, yet is time consuming and correspondingly costly. The main focus of this paper work has been to develop a comprehensive geometallurgical testing framework for developing Yogi BIF low grade magnetite deposit located at Western Australia. In order to provide successful geometallurgical mapping, was collected data from several different disciplines (geology, chemistry, mineralogy) and parameters (physical properties, metallurgical response and geotechnical measurements) during drilling activities and test work. The investigation shown magnetic separation behavior of material had high variation and is most important element in the proper design of ore beneficiation plant. This paper provides an improved and efficient magnetic separation test methods used for the investigation of separation behavior and variability of the Yogi Ore deposit and evaluates their applicability and potential in the geometallurgical context. In this paper a small-scale magnetic separation has been developed that allows estimating from single pass separation test using small amounts of sample material. Verification of the evaluation method and validation was done with different mineral systems."

The strike of the Canadian asbestos miners entered its seventh month with increasing signs of early termination. Both unions are in the midst of heavy negotiations with management, and an optimistic industry source predicted that work would resume by October 1. Recession recovery in some segments of the asbestos manufacturing industry is being impeded by lack of fibers, CADMIUM - On September 9, St. Joe Minerals Corp. reduced the price of cadmium metal to $2.75 per pound. The producer price bad been uniformly quoted at $3.00 per pound since June 26, 1975. Subsequently, Amax, Inc. and National Zinc Co. reduced their prices to $2.50 per pound. By mid-September all five U.S. cadmium producers were marketing the metal at $2.50 per pound.

Within the State of Montana the streams rise in the high mountains at. an elevation of from 5,000 to 8,000 ft. These streams leave the State line both east and west at elevations from 3,500 to 2,400 ft. It is, therefore, apparent. that all these streams have an average fall of 3,000 ft. within the confines of the. State, and many opportunities are presented on all streams. for the development of power, by taking advantage of the natural fall. It is probable that 1,000,000 h. p. can :be developed in the State of Montana. I. NATURAL FEATURES OF STATE AFFECTING POWER DEVELOPMENT. The main. range of the Rocky mountains, forming the Continental Divide, cuts the State of Montana into two parts. The eastern part is drained by the Missouri river and its tributaries, the Madison; Jefferson, Gallatin and Yellowstone, rivers. The western part is drained by tributaries to the Columbia river, the Clarks fork and the Kootenai river. The Clarks fork in turn is formed by the junction of Missoula and Flathead rivers, the latter, draining Flathead lake. The western part of the State. is mountainous and the eastern part is comparatively level. As a natural result the rivers in the western part are capable of generating large amounts of power, while in the eastern part of the State natural power sites are much fewer and farther apart. It also follows that in the mountainous districts large amounts of power are required for the mining industry, while in the eastern part of the State, which is principally devoted to agriculture, power is required in smaller quantities. ?

"Studies have been conducted at Michigan Technological University (MTU) for over twenty years on methods for characterizing and controlling particulate emissions from heavy-duty diesel engines and die resulting effects on regulated and unregulated emissions. During that time, control technologies have developed in response to more stringent EPA standards for diesel emissions. This paper is a review of: 1) modem emission control technologies, 2) emissions sampling and chemical, physical and biological characterization methods and 3) summary results from recent studies conducted al MTU on heavy-duty diesel engines with a trap and an oxidation catalytic converter (OCC) operated on three different fuels. Control technology developments discussed are particulate traps, catalysts, advances in engine design, the application of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and modifications of fuel formulations. Methods for dilution tunnel sampling, particle size analysis, chemical analysis with emphasis on polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and nitro-PAH, and biological characterization using mutagenic activity (Ames) assays are described, along with statistical approaches to experimental design and data analysis.In studies at MTU, both particulate traps and an OCC have been shown to be effective for the reduction of total particulate mauer (TPM), with the OCC being better al reducing all forms of hydrocarbon emissions, including PAH and nitro-PAH, and with the traps being better at removing the solids (SOL). The use of low sulfur fuel (0.Ql % by mass) has led to additional reductions in TPM; the low sulfur fuel has been shown to reduce the number of small, nuclei-mode particles for one of the engines tested. PAH, nitro-PAH, and mutagenic actively levels generally decreased with use of either the traps or the OCC.INTRODUCTIONDuring the 1980s and the early 1990s there have been significant advancements in the development of technology to control diesel particulate emissions. Efforts have been focused on internal control of the engine by design, the use of after-treatment devices, and improvements in fuel formulations to reduce all the diesel emissions. The research and development activities have been driven by the need to meet the US EPA heavy-duty vehicle standards shown in Table 1. The important standards for new technology are the 1994 heavy-duty vehicle 0.1 gm/bhp-hr particulate, the new urban bus 0.05 gm/bhp-hr particulate standard for 1996 and the heavy-duty vehicle 4.0 gm/bhp-hr NOx standard for 1998."

The Ag2O-mediated reactions of cycloaurated compounds with a general formula Au(L)Cl2 (L = bi-dentate C?N ligand) with thiosalicylic acid, N-acetyl cysteine or 1,2-benzenedithiol in DMF proceeds via ligand substitution of the Au?Cl bonds to afford the S-O and S?S adducts all in good yields. The reactivity of the dichloro, S-O and S-S adducts towards thiols were examined by reacting with cysteine in an aqueous medium, revealing that all of Au-Cl, Au-O and Au-N are labile for thiol displacement. The measurement of the inhibitive activities of these compounds against human cathepsins B and K showed that the dichloro and S-O adducts are effective inhibitors with IC50 values ranging from 0.1 to 2.6 -M, and that the S-S adducts are inactive.

Blast-induced damage criterion based on the peak particle velocity has worked reasonably well for estimating building damage. However, the same criterion cannot be used to estimate damage to rock and mine structures such as shaft and tunnel walls. It does not take into account the nature of seismic radiation pattern in the near-field, which is very different than what is obtained at far-off distances. To investigate this phenomenon, a systematic study has been carried out involving single-hole blasts and normal production blasts, with explosive source ranging from nearly point source charges to standard borehole sizes (6-7 m long explosive column), with charge weight varying from 0.5 kg to 30 kg. In the near-field, it is shown that, both P-wave and S-wave take a dominant position compared to the mainly surface waves measured in the far-field. These are shown to depend strongly not only on the length of the explosive column but also the way it is initiated in the borehole (i.e. direct vs. reverse initiation in the borehole) with respect to the target location. The seismic radiation patterns were recorded by high-frequency triaxial accelerometer stations grouted in the rock mass. This study describes the nature of seismic radiation in the near-field from long and short charges, the role of initiation direction and their effect on frequency with respect to sensor locations or target area of interest, and their implication in prediction of blast-induced damage in the near field.
