"A drilled pier foundation was originally designed to support the proposed G. Wayne Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons on the campus of Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA. Reflective of the site geology, the original drilled pier foundation was divided into a Northern and Southern portion with an allowable end bearing capacity of 60 ksf and 100 ksf, respectively. After initial pricing on the original design, several value engineering options were submitted that featured changes to the original design capacity and construction method. The project team selected the value engineering option that involved conducting an Osterberg Load Cell test to assess end bearing of the site bedrock and skin friction. Results of the Osterberg Load Cell test justified increasing the allowable end bearing capacity of the site bedrock to 100 ksf in the Northern portion and 125 ksf in the Southern portion. Considering the final foundation design and Osterberg Load Cell test program, a net savings of approximately $259,000, or approximately 34%, was obtained over the original design.Project BackgroundThe G. Wayne Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons (CULC) is a 5-story academic building on the Georgia Tech campus in Atlanta, Georgia. The CULC was completed in 2011 and consists of a concrete frame structure supported on a drilled pier foundation.After pricing of the original drilled pier foundation design, several value engineering (VE) analyses were performed by the foundation contractor in an effort to demonstrate the potential for a reduced foundation cost. The VE analyses focused on variations in design assumptions, as well as construction techniques. This paper presents a case study that demonstrates how the value engineering process can be used to reduce foundation costs.Site Investigation and Subsurface ConditionsThe CULC building site is located within the Southern Piedmont Physiographic Province, an area underlain by metamorphic and igneous rocks. McConnell and Abrams (1984) indicate that the site is located at the boundary between two distinct geologic formations. The Northern portion of the site is underlain by the Wahoo Creek Formation while the Southern portion of the site is underlain by the Stonewall Formation. The following paragraphs briefly describe the geotechnical investigations performed by the project geotechnical engineer (GE) for the CULC."

The objective of this work is to evaluate the physical quality achieved in the iron ore pellets and the temperature profile in the pellet bed by applying an inversion in the flow during the cooling. The firing of pellets requires a minimum residence time in the sintering temperatures of the hematite grains [1]. The applied concept aims at raising this time to pellets located at the bottom of the bed which would provide an improvement in the physical quality of the product. The tests were carried out in a pot-grate type oven and the samples of fired pellets were divided into three aliquots according to the loading position of the pot termed top, middle and bottom, the pellets were sieved and subjected to physical tests and the compared to conventional indurating flow with the same ores and inputs. It was possible to show an increase of 7 to 8% in the compressive strength of the medium and bottom layers, maintaining the top layer results. The objectives of the research were achieved and the tests will be extended to assess the impacts on the mass and energy balance of the indurating machine and its components.

Long Operations is located on the eastern slope of the Kambalda Dome in Western Australia. Kambalda hosts nickel deposits that are modelled to have formed from an exsolving sulfide melt from a parental komatiite melt. The nickel deposit model predicts a stratigraphical relationship where massive Fe-Ni-Cu-sulfides are deposited in troughs at the base of komatiite channels. The basal contact of the sulfides is generally tholeiitic basalt. The Kambalda geological sequence form a dome structure with a granodioritic core and have undergone tectonic and metamorphic overprinting, resulting in the formation of upper greenschist to lower amphibolite-facies units.On the basalt-ultramafic contact, within the Long Operations, there are two separate channels hosting seven different orebodies. The Moran orebody is the most undisturbed orebody at Long Operations, with many primary magmatic textures preserved, making it ideal for studies to improve the existing nickel sulfide formation model. Detailed exploration and production infill drilling and systematic sampling indicates consistent nickel tenor variations over the entire Moran orebody. This was also observed in other deposits in Western Australia and was explained as metamorphic variations. Similar variations are observed with some trace elements that cannot be explained by metamorphic overprint but with gravitational segregation in the liquid sulfide. Other more complex trace element patterns (eg Cr) require additional explanations and are partly originated from incorporation of underlain basalt and sediment and partly from gravitational segregation.From a mining perspective, the Moran orebody can be used as an example of modern high-speed mining, but at the same time preserving samples for the future and allowing knowledge from the geological context and geochemical signatures to improve future exploration.CITATION:Staude, S, Marriott, S, Griffith, J, Laming, C, Hammond, D, Stanfield, S and Sheppard, S, 2014. To maximize productivity through improved minerals processing technology, the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is investigating particle agglomeration techniques as a means of increasing the percolation rates of leach solutions in heap leaching of clayey gold-silver ores. Simulated heap leach experiments were conducted on 50-pound charges of ore that were contained in 5.5-inch-diameter columns, 5 feet in height. Results indicated that the percolation rate of cyanide leach solution could be enhanced markedly by mixing the ore with controlled amounts of lime, flocculants, and water, and then aging the mixture prior to the column leach step. Experimental results obtained on 20-mesh silver tailings and gold ore crushed to 3/8 inch and to 1 inch showed that it was possible to increase percolation rates as much as 100-fold without sacrificing silver-gold extraction. Larger scale tests conducted in 24-inch-diameter, 16-foot-high columns closely paralleled bench-scale results. By improving percolation leaching, these techniques have the potential of helping to solve environmental problems associated with tailings disposal as well as making an important economic impact on gold-silver recovery operations. Investigations are continuing to develop binders superior to lime for particle agglomeration pretreatment.

Western Mining Corporation began shaft sinking operations at it's Foster orebody, south of Kambalda, on the 20th June, 1984. The top levels of the orebody are currently being mined via a decline some 1.5km away.Long term plans require the shaft and decline to combine and produce 400,000 tonnes of nickel ore per annum. Eventually all of the ore produced will be hauled up the shaft.The shaft is 4.5m in diameter and the target depth is 760m. Ground conditions to date suggest there will be no further need for concrete lining beyond the oxidised zone. As such, the sink is an open-shaft development in competent basalt rock. Shaft furniture will be installed on completion of the excavation to the target depth.This paper summarises the experience in the project to date, along with comparisons to conventional shaft sinking methods employed in previous years at Kambalda Nickel Operations.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of MSc (Eng) degree Solid state sintered silicon carbide ceramics are used in aggressive environments as sealings. There exist data concerning corrosion, but there are only few data concerning their electrocorrosion behaviour. Therefore the electrochemical corrosion of solid state sintered silicon carbide (SSiC) ceramics has been studied at room temperature in acidic and alkaline environments by using potentiodynamic polarization measurements. The investigation showed a pronounced electrochemical corrosion in bases and acids. In HCl andHNO3pseudo-passivity features due to the formation of a thin layer of SiO2on the surface were observed, whereas in NaOH soluble silicate ions were observed, resulting in more pronounced corrosion. The microstructural observations of initial and corroded samples reveal that the residual carbon found in the microstructure do not dissolve preferentially. "The operation of mineral processing equipments is intimately related to the mineral composition of the ore. However unit performances are usually characterized in terms of metal contents or recoveries as this data is easier to obtain than the mineral contents. This paper describes a method that combines the operations of material balancing and estimation of the mineral contents of the ore. The estimated mineral contents can be used for process analysis and diagnosis of operating problems.IntroductionThe ore that is feeding a concentrator is made of minerals that condition the energy requirements for the ore comminution and the performances of the subsequent separation circuit. Indeed a change in the mineral composition of the ore may lead to lower grinding mill throughput as well as lower recovery or grade of the economical products. Despite this relationship is recognized the mineral composition of the ore is seldom measured or estimated to provide regular information for the diagnosis of operating problems. Some methods such as the QEM-SCAN (Whiten, 2008; Lamberg and Vianna, 2006) are available to measure the concentration of the minerals in ore samples but the method is time demanding and plant operators usually base their evaluation of the plant performances on chemical assays of metals or elements since this data is easier to obtain from ore samples.Usually samples of the streams of mineral processing plants are collected on a daily basis to be assayed for strategic elements. The obtained concentrations are balanced to produce coherent data with the material conservation constraint and then used to characterize the day to day operation of the plant in terms of recovery of valuable metals and grades of the marketable concentrates. The behavior of contaminant elements can also be monitored from this data allowing the operators to explain for instance a lower zinc concentrate grade by a more important contamination of iron. However such diagnosis is only partial as the contaminant element can be transported by different minerals. Indeed the iron contamination of a zinc sulfide concentrate may be caused by an inadequate depression of pyrite or due to another iron carrying mineral. A possible way to answer the question is to determine the concentrations of the various minerals in the ore and produced sealable concentrates. Since measuring the mineral contents of the ore could be a demanding task one should consider to estimate this data from the daily chemical assays of the sample collected on the main streams of the circuit. Some authors have already investigated the problem. Whiten(2008) described a method to estimate the mineral contents of an ore sample. Lamberg and Vianna(2006) proposed a method to do a sequential mineral reconstruction followed by a material balance. Few of these methods account for the mass conservation of the reconstructed mineral contents."

Introduction The intent of this paper is to present the general strategy and method of implementation to achieve a "fast-track" mine development. The major objectives of a "fast-track" or rapid development schedule are to minimize front-end development expenditures and to realize an early cash flow from operations. The Borealis project of Houston International Minerals Corp. (HIMCO) is used as the working example to illustrate the development schedule. Borealis is a 2.3 kt/d (2,500 stpd) gold-silver heap leach operation near Hawthorne, NV, Pre-Feasibility Planning Proper early planning and identification of priority items were necessary to expedite project progress. On April 1, 1978, HIMCO leased the rights to the Borealis prospect and initiated exploration activities almost immediately. Since Borealis was showing excellent potential for mine development, an effort to clear the way environmentally was initiated during the summer of 1979. With the Borealis properties located within the Toiyabe National Forest, the US Forest Service (USFS) was recognized as the "lead" or respon¬sible agency for addressing the environmental issues. Early scoping of the environmental issues by both HIMCO and the USFS allowed HIMCO to take the initiative and address two potentially critical issues-archaeological and biological. Third party consultants, agreed upon by HIMCO and the USFS, were contracted to conduct archaeological and biological surveys. Desert Research Institute of Reno, NV, provided archaeological services, and JFL & Associates of Boulder, CO, provided biological services. These efforts began in the fall of 1979 and continued through the summer of 1980. Conservative Design Criteria By adoption of conservation design criteria, flowsheets and processing data required for detail engineering were firmly established with a minimum of impact on schedule. On Oct. 21, 1980, HIMCO formally initiated a feasibility study to evaluate the Borealis project. Four organizations were contracted for particular scopes of work: • John T. Boyd Co.: Ore reserve estimation, preliminary mine plan, and mine capital and operating cost estimation. • Bechtel Civil and Minerals: Conceptual engineering, processing capital and operating cost estimation. • Hazen Research Inc.: Metallurgical testing. • Sierra Pacific Power: Cost estimation for power supply. Metallurgical testing and conceptual engineering of both heap and agitation leach flowsheets were investigated concurrently. Numerous economic evaluations were conducted for both heap and agitation leaching at varying production capacities. The results indicated a heap leaching flowsheet treating 454 kt/y (500,000 stpy) yielded the best economics and was compatible with the "fast-track" development goal. Conservative design criteria was established to provide operating flexibility and ensure plant productivities. A summary of major design criteria is presented in Table 1. HIMCO assembled the results of the studies of the various consultants along with internally generated studies to produce the feasibility document. The decision to supply 100% equity by HIMCO rather than arrange project financing help to expedite the project. Cooperation Between HIMCO and Regulatory Agencies With cooperation and mutual trust established between HIMCO and regulatory agencies, the time required for environmental permitting was streamlined as much as practical. To expedite the required construction permits, HIMCO proposed to the USFS that HIMCO fund the total cost of an Environmental Assessment Report (EAR) and that issues be addressed at the technical level of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The previous studies on the critical issues of archaeology and biology provided HIMCO with the information to satisfy the proposed approach. Houston International Minerals and the USFS agreed to have Environmental Research and Technology (ERT) of Fort Collins, CO, prepare a draft EAR for the USFS.

Previous reports related largely to publications by Bureau authors during the reporting period. This one discusses the publications issued during 1955 and in addition describes briefly the work in progress during the year. Further details on the published work may be found by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes. The Bureau continues to direct its research and technologic work on coal toward safer and more efficient mining, improved preparation, and more effective utilization, with the ultimate twin goals of promoting conservation and insuring that coal will make its maximum contribution to the Nation's industrial capacity. Significant advances toward these goals were made in 1955.

The thirty-fifth consecutive National Safety Competition sponsored and conducted annually by the Federal Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, closed with several noteworthy accomplishments to its credit. Some of them are: 1. A record low injury-frequency rate of 18.293 disabling work injuries per million man-hours equal to that established in 1957. 2. The third lowest injury-severity rate (4,335). 3. The second highest number of mines and quarries participating (672) 4. A record number of participants finishing the competitive year without a disabling work injury. 5. All recipients of Sentinels of Safety trophies free of disabling work injuries for the first time since 1952.

Traditionally, secant piles have been utilized to provide temporary support during excavation for shafts and cut-and-cover tunnels. As an alternative, the secant piles can be included into the permanent structure, where they serve as the envelope sustaining the lateral loads and gravity of the permanent structure in addition to supporting the excavation during construction. This has several benets, such as shorter building times and lower excavation costs. Recent construction of an approach structure and an underground station as part of Montréal, Canada’s Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM), one of the biggest transit systems in North America, was completed with remarkable success using this. In this paper, a case study based on a project that employed secant piles as the permanent liner is presented. Techniques to guarantee a watertight construction with over a century of service life are described, along with a variety of structural and waterproong methods applied to create an economical design.

Alternating current electrocoagulation (AC/EC) may be an alternative to chemical coagulation in the thickening of tailings in the mineral, coal and petroleum industries. In the current study, ground silica (d50 as received, 20 µm) served as the model tailings solid with characteristically poor settling behavior. Its natural initial settling rate was 1.6 x 10-3 cm/min. This paper discusses the indirect application of AC/EC via aluminum electrodes to the enhancement of the settling behavior of the silica. ?Indirect AC/EC? means that the silica was coagulated upon dispersion in water that had been treated by AC/EC. The effect of AC/EC retention time on settling behavior is examined and the water chemistry is analyzed. Test results show that the initial settling rate of silica was enhanced by a factor of 4,000 at its maximum of 6.4 cm/min, under the conditions employed. Settling enhancement was achieved upon contact between the AC/EC-treated water and the silica, and the enhanced initial settling rate was dictated by the floc size. The aluminum dosage increased with AC/EC retention time, reaching a maximum concentration that was equivalent to 13.1% of that predicted by Faraday?s law. Complex aluminum ions are considered to have adsorbed onto the silica surface and an adsorption mass ratio of 0.3 mg Al/g silica was the most effective in enhancing settling behavior. Owing to pH change or slow kinetics, aluminum hydroxide precipitation did not lower the ion product ([Al3+][OH-]3) below the KSP of 6.3 x 10-32.

This circular describes the methods and costs of deepening the Silver Summit three-compartment shaft in the Coeur d'Alene mining region of Idaho. A noteworthy rate of advance was achieved at this operation by the successful use of a mechanical shaft-mucking machine. The Silver Summit mine is 1 mile west from the town of Osburn, Idaho, via U. S. Highway 10. The adit-level portal of the mine is on the south slope of the Coeur d'Alene River Valley at an altitude of 2,700 feet. The Silver Summit shaft is 6,000 feet from the portal. In past years this shaft had been sunk from the adit level to a depth of 1,500 feet. During 1946 the Polaris Mining Co, deepened it to 3,095 feet. The work was done under a co- operative development agreement between the Silver Summit Mining Co. and the Polaris Mining Co.

Canadian leadership in a global mining context will depend not only on entrepreneurship and best practice but also on technological innovation. This paper argues for more ambition and commitment to R&D for technological innovation in Canadian mining. It focuses on underground hardrock mining, where past R&D initiatives have simply not stood the test of time, and it is important to examine why. Concerns arise because industry’s commitment to R&D has not been sustained over time. Innovation through exploration, processing, and environmental technologies has been more significant. Meanwhile, R&D capacity and synergies in government institutions and universities have not been exploited. There is a need for more commitment, coordination, and collaboration by industry, governments, and universities. This paper examines some corporate models that have achieved sustainable innovation, along with some that have not. A strategy for innovation is discussed that relates to culture, commitment, coordination, and collaboration.

"The Dumont deposit is a large (1,179 Mt proven and probable reserve) low grade (0.27% nickel), nickel sulphide project located in the Abitibi region 25km west of Amos, Quebec. Royal Nickel Corporation acquired the project in 2007 and has since taken the project from a scoping study in 2010 through to completing the feasibility study in July 2013.The Dumont deposit in a nickel deposit with the recoverable nickel contained in three minerals; pentlandite, haezlewoodite and awaruite. The minerals are recovered by a combination of flotation and magnetic separation. Over the course of the studies many flowsheet design decisions and changes were made. This paper outlines an overview of the project, flowsheet design including the comminution circuit, desliming and awaruite recovery. The overall resulting flowsheet that was used for the feasibility study is then presented along with the confirmatory locked cycle testing that showed the feasibility design basis was able to produce the predicted concentrate grade and recovery.IntroductionRoyal Nickel Corporation (RNC) is a mineral resource company headquartered in Toronto, Canada, primarily focused on the exploration, evaluation, development and acquisition of base metal and platinum group metal properties. RNC's principal asset is the Dumont Nickel project (Dumont project) located in the established Abitibi mining camp, 25 km northwest of Amos, Quebec. RNC acquired a 100% interest in the Dumont property in 2007. The mineral claims covering the Dumont deposit are currently held 98% by RNC and 2% by Ressources Québec.The Dumont project is located in the province of Quebec in the municipalities of Launay and Trécesson approximately 25 km by road northwest of the city of Amos, 60 km northeast of the industrial and mining city of Rouyn-Noranda and 70 km northwest of the city of Val d’Or."

The rapid depletion of known deposits of high-grade ore and the need for development of additional reserves, together with increased interest in open-pit mining of low-grade zinc-lead ores in the Tri-State District, led the Bureau of Mines to examine likely mining sites. Underground operations failed to remove all of the ore in a number of areas, and it appeared possible that some of them might be reworked successfully by low-cost open-pit methods. The South Carthage or Hull tract in Jasper County, Mo., was selected by Bureau engineers as favorable for the development of an open-pit mine.

In longwall mining, ventilation is considered one of the more effective means for controlling gases and dust. In order to study longwall ventilation in a controlled environment, researchers built a unique physical model called the Longwall Instrumented Aerodynamic Model (LIAM) in a laboratory at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) campus. LIAM is a 1:30 scale physical model geometrically designed to simulate a single longwall panel with a three-entry headgate and tailgate configuration, along with three back bleeder entries. It consists of a twopart heterogeneous gob that simulates a less compacted unconsolidated zone and more compacted consolidated zone. It has a footprint of 8.94 m (29 ft.) by 4.88 m (16 ft.), with a simulated face length of 220 m (720 ft.) in full scale. LIAM is built with critical details of the face, gob, and mining machinery. It is instrumented with pressure gauges, flow anemometers, temperature probes, a fan, and a data acquisition system. Scaling relationships are derived on the basis of Reynolds and Richardson numbers to preserve the physical and dynamic similitude. This paper discusses the findings from a study conducted in the LIAM to investigate the gob-face interaction, airflow patterns within the gob, and airflow dynamics on the face for varying roof caving characteristics. Results are discussed to show the impact of caving behind the shields on longwall ventilation.
