Pipelines are used extensively in industry to convey various products. Internal corrosion of pipelines can lead to perforation and leakage of the product. A growing problem, not often accurately recognized, is internal corrosion of pipelines caused by bacteria. Microbiologically-induced corrosion (MIC) refers to corrosion caused by a variety of micro-organisms. This form of corrosion is not widely recognized in many industries, although it is widespread and causes many corrosion problems in pipelines, both internal and external. Sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are responsible for the bulk of the corrosion problems caused by MIC. Corrosion caused by SRB is found extensively in water pipelines conveying raw, potable and waste water, as well as in pipelines conveying slurries. This problem also occurs in pipelines conveying crude oil. This paper describes internal corrosion problems of slurry pipelines caused by bacteria and outlines mitigation methods to improve slurry pipeline integrity, thereby extending the life of such pipeline

The gas-combustion retort developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines at the Rifle Oil Shale Project near Rifle, Colo., is a continuous, gravity-feed retort. The heat required to convert the kerogen in the oil shale to liquid oil is generated by the combustion of product gas and carbonaceous residue remaining on the retorted shale after the kerogen has been converted to oil, gas, and residue. A study of the effects of the process variables on retort operation, product yields, and product properties is important to the successful solution of the problems encountered in the development of a satisfactory process. Statistical methods were used to design the experiments and analyze the effects of the rate of shale throughput, the composition of dilution gas, the height of the shale bed above the air entry, air-gas distributor design, shale size range, and the ratios of the flow rates of the various gas streams entering the retort to the rate of shale throughput.

Underground stone mines frequently operate on multiple mining horizons or are required to undermine or overmine old workings. In these situations, the effects of pillar columnization and interburden thickness on the stresses surrounding mine workings are poorly understood. Many old workings were not designed to consider the effect on future undermining or overmining and, as a result, are laid out on irregular patterns and with pillar sizes that are difficult or impossible to replicate on adjacent levels. Additionally, as depth increases, even a consistent gridded mine layout may result in poor columnization due to the need to increase pillar sizes. Rules of thumb and past practice for designing multiple levels may often be effective. This paper explores the effect that multiple-level stone mining has on stress redistribution through the discussion of two case-study mines and associated numerical modeling to provide additional insight into situations which may cause concern.

"Darreh-Zerreshk and Ali-Abad are two relatively small porphyry copper-type deposits in Yazd Province in central Iran. They are located within the central Iranian volcano-plutonic belt, formed above the collisional convergent margin of the Iranian lithospheric plate from the late Eocene to the Miocene. This paper discusses the geochemical characteristics of the igneous rocks, and 40Ar/39Ar geochronology of plutons and alteration phases associated with the Darreh-Zerreshk and Ali-Abad deposits. The deposits are spatially associated with igneous complexes that consist of older and barren granites intruded by intermediate-composition granitoids, which are the carriers of Cu mineralization. The granites have relatively high content of Nb, Y, and K, a prominent negative Eu anomaly, and were probably derived from melting of, or contamination of mantle-derived magmas by, continental crust. Porphyritic diorites, quartz monzodiorites, and granodiorites show enrichment in light rare earth and large-ion lithophile elements, depletion in middle rare earth elements, and have no negative Eu anomaly. These intermediate-composition granitoids were derived from melting of the upper mantle or lower crust, and their differentiation was controlled partly by fractionation of hornblende. A pilot K/Ar whole-rock dating study suggests that the pre-ore granites were emplaced in the Oligocene. Dating by the 40Ar/39Ar method of nine samples of secondary biotite and sericitized rocks from drillcore within the mineralized and altered zones in both deposits yielded a well-defined age of ca. 16 Ma. This date is interpreted to be the time of hydrothermal alteration and of porphyry copper type mineralization in this part of Iran."

The local geology, the lack of recorded mining activity, and our field investigation and associated sampling indicate a low potential for mineral resources. Claim records and the literature review failed to show any lode or heavy mineral placer mining claim locations that are definitely in the area or anomalous mineral concentrations in the study area. Field investigations revealed no claims, prospects, or mineralized areas.

The area covered by this paper is the same as that covered in 1944. Colorado, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming are included in the discussion and statistics, and brief mention is made of activities in the adjoining states, except Nebraska and New Mexico, which are considered separately (see pp. 187-189). The other adjoining states, North and South Dakota, Arizona, Nevada, and Idaho, have had virtually no oil or gas production, except in the gas field of Cedar Creek. Montana, which extends into North Dakota; the Pierre field in South Dakota, where gas is produced and separated in gas-water wells, and the abandoned Payette area in western Idaho. Seven gas wells were drilled in North Dakota, but no wildcatting was reported. Several unsuccessful wildcats were drilled in South Dakota, and some were continuing at the end of the year. Activity in Idaho and Nevada was negligible.

The determination and publication of data o the chemical and physical properties of American coals have been primary functions of the Bureau of Mines since its creation in 1910. In recent years this program has been expanded to meet increasing needs for information on the suitability of coals for the production of coke, gas, and byproducts, and within the last year an experimental coal-hydrogenation plant has been completed. With this addition, the Bureau is able to cover every phase of coal utilization, including combustion, carbonization, liquefaction, and complete gasification. The need for this information is increasing not only to meet the requirements of consumers but also to give the data required to establish the classification and minimum selling price of coal by the National Bituminous Coal Commission.

Shale gas wells can sometimes drill through coal reserves. Hypothetically, the caving of the gob from longwall coal mines may deform the shale gas well casing and potentially result in a breach. NIOSH researchers studied the permeability of the surrounding ground strata that may affect the potential for an inflow of gas into an underground mine environment. An overview and comparison of measured permeability values under differing cover depths (147 m and 353 m to the Pittsburgh coal seam) and mining cycle phase will be presented and discussed in this report. The findings highlight data-driven experimental evidence that affect the interaction between gas wells extraction and mining operations that may lead to potentially hazardous environments.

A computer program is presented to calculate the shape factors and volumes of cells from a potentiometric model, using coordinates of the inter-sections of the stream lines and equal potentials and a few additional coordinates. Shape factors are used in flow computations when the geometry is complicated. The program also includes computer instructions to divide the channels into cells of equal volume and to obtain the shape factor for each of these equal volume cells. An illustrated example using the potentiometric model for the waterflood of a seven-spot well-spacing pattern is presented. The information contained in the report is of value not only to those allied to the subject but also to others, because many of the techniques can be conveniently used in formulating other computer programs.

Significant advances in longwall mining technology and equipment have occurred over the last decade by the late 1990s, longwall mine output accounted for 40% of all underground output in the U.S. and today longwall mines account for approximately 50% of coal produced underground in the United states. A 51% increase in average shift production rates has occurred over the last 15 years. this increased longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced and controlling respirable coal dust presents an ongoing challenge for coal mine operators the National Institute for Occupational safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a series of benchmark surveys at longwall operations across the country to identify current operating practices and the types of controls being used. Gravimetric and instantaneous dust sampling was completed to quantify the dust levels generated by major sources on the longwall section and to identify different control technologies in use today substantial reductions in dust levels were realized at sampling locations on the face when compared with ongwall surveys conducted in the 1990s results from the underground dust surveys and current longwall dust control technology and operating practices will be discussed. Complete details are given of the drilling method by which two shafts were sunk at the new Beatm'x mine of Staatsmijnen in the Netherlands. The nature of the rock strata in the Dutch mining district determined choice of the drilling rather than the freezing method. Data for each step and details of the equipment used are given in the illustrations. Staatsmijnen was founded in 1902 with government financial backing, but it is run as a private enterprise, on a commercial basis, with the normal fiscal obligations. The company now has four mines in operation with annual outputs amounting to 7 1/2 million tons of coal. In 1952 it was determined that a new mine—the Beatrix—would be opened. Details of the shaft-sinking operation are described in this paper. SHAFT LOCATION The coal-bearing carboniferous rock in the Dutch mining district is overlain almost completely by soft water-bearing strata, which at the site of the new shafts are about 1600 ft thick. The sinking of the new shafts through this soft water-bearing overburden (Fig. 1) is a costly and time-consuming affair. From the two availaible sinking methods: 1) Poetsch's well known freezing method or 2) the drilling method of Honigmann-de Vooys, the latter was preferred, not only because of its relative cheapness, under the prevailing conditions, but primarily because by using the drilling process, a special type of shaft lining of steel, concrete, and bitumen could be used. The new shafts, located 330 ft apart, have an inner diameter of 18 ft, 4 1/2 in. The boreholes, which have a diameter of 25 ft and which were drilled through nearly 1600 ft of overburden and some 100 ft of carboniferous, each contain more than 29,000 cu yd—by far the largest in the world. DRILLING METHOD The drilling method is based on the use of mud-flush—a thin mixture of clay and water—to keep the borehole filled during the entire drilling period and during insertion of the lining (Fig. 2). "The start-up of new plants, extending from the commissioning of equipment to the production ramp-up, is a critical period where the processing circuit operation must be done in a structured and well controlled way to enable the gradual, safe and rapid achievement of production targets. The magnitude of the many risks associated with this pivotal period is accentuated in the actual context of low commodity prices. However, the implementation of a method that analyzes risks associated with a start-up, their probability of occurrence and their impacts leads to the identification of a series of preventive actions that can be applied in order to reduce potential negative impacts.Soutex has been involved in numerous start-ups over the last few years and has developed a structured methodology to assess this crucial period, maximize the pre-start-up preparation, ensure a smoother and safer ramp-up period and minimize the time needed before reaching commercial production.This paper describes a method to identify preventive actions to apply in order to reduce risks related to a plant start-up. Then, the various steps of the method are demonstrated using the industrial case study of the Canadian Malartic gold plant situated in Abitibi, Québec. The specific preventive actions, during start-up, the organisational measures and the ramp-up plan are detailed as they were effectively achieved. Finally, the post start-up actions are presented as well as some key results illustrating the achievement of their prior defined objectives.IntroductionPlanning a new plant or new circuit start-up in a mine installation involves various risks, both at the economical and safety levels. Unprepared staff and equipment can lead to safety issues that could threaten plant staff as well as the environment. Moreover, a poorly prepared start-up could often lead to equipment break-down, production stoppages and delays, leading to important economic impacts, delaying commercial production and therefore affecting directly the profitability of mining projects.It is common in the industry to have structured commissioning procedures for major equipment taken separately. Technical personnel from the equipment manufacturing company would usually come on site in order to perform the pre-operation verification, dry runs and the first hours of operations. This kind of assistance is usually focussed on one piece of equipment and neglects the interactions between the various equipment of the production chain. The commissioning phase is usually maintenance oriented and the information given by the manufacturing representative seldomly flows through the operation staff (in the case of this paper, the denomination “staff” refers to both managing and operating employees). The global process is usually not taken into consideration by the technical personnel sent on-site by the manufacturer during the commissioning phase. Many papers can be found describing the commissioning of new equipment focussing on the technology (Côté and Adante (2009), Wells et al (2007)) but without dealing with its integration process in the complete production chain."

Effective and sustained corporate energy management programs are becoming a necessity for energy users as electricity deregulation laws are enacted on a state-by-state basis across the country and environmental regulations pertaining to emissions become more prevalent. The “Total Energy Asset Management” (TEAM) approach has been developed to assist energy end users with the development and implementation of corporate energy management programs designed to reduce energy risks and increase energy cost savings. This paper highlights the ways in which this approach can be applied to the mining industry while minimizing initial program implementation costs and increasing potential program benefits. Nearly the entire mining industry has become very focused on identifying opportunities to reduce costs per unit of yield. The industry as a whole has increasingly faced pricing pressures in large part due to the effects of global competition. The result of international marketplace participation and the emergence of higher efficiency recovery techniques have resulted in flat or even decreased prices for mining products. Thus, opportunities to reduce costs are actually opportunities to gain a competitive edge over similar mining operations. Due to the energy-intensive nature of many mining operations, the costs associated with energy are often a substantial percentage of operating costs. Therefore, it becomes very important to develop the corporate mentality that energy is an asset whose use should be optimized globally. In addition to the cost benefits of the TEAM approach, other benefits may occur such as reductions in facility greenhouse gas emissions.

Brown iron ore resources in Barbour, Butler, Crenshaw, and Pike Counties were investigated in a drilling program and geological study by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Alabama Geological Survey and the University of Alabama. The aggregate footage drilled was 18,010 linear feet. When developed, reserves of 12,664,000 long tons of crude ore were indicated, containing from 26.9 to 29.0 percent iron and 0.2 to 1.6 percent manganese under a maximum overburden of 40 feet. Total inferred crude ore for the four counties was calculated to be 827,700,000 long tons. Beneficiation of samples by simulated log washing and use of a 118-inch screen yielded from 46.8 to 51.7 percent iron and 0.2 to 2.6 percent manganese. Screen-test studies indicated no appreciable interlocking between the iron and manganese minerals and the waste particles of materials retained on a 200-mesh screen. Clay was prominent in micron-size slimes. Silica was deleterious in the minus 20-mesh size. While an indicated 2,198,000 dry long tons of usable iron ore can be recovered, sink-and-float tests show that it may be possible for 4,654,000 dry long tons to be recovered by other than log washing. However, applicable commercial processes have not been demonstrated.

By utilizing collapsed gangue to create gob ribs, roof cutting and roadway maintenance (RCRM) technology enables coal pillar-free mining, presenting a novel approach. Due to their inherent structure, faults, which are common geological formations, can lead to various hazards, including fault sliding and significant deformation of roadways. In this study, a selfdesigned underground engineering simulation test device is utilized to imitate the cross-fault mining of the 11,101 working face in the Qipanjing Coal Mine (East). The objective is to examine the behavior of the surrounding rock and stress evolution. Generally, the experimental findings demonstrate that compared to the return air roadway, the RCRM roadway experiences a 3.3% decrease in maximum coal rib stress. This suggests that the implementation of this technique can effectively alleviate the stress on the surrounding rock of the roadway. The maximum coal rib stress, lateral pressure of the gob rib, and maximum deformation of the roof near the fault of the RCRM roadway are 11.3%, 25.6%, and 86.1% greater than those of the conventional geological conditions, respectively. The roadway deformation is negatively impacted by the fault structure. Based on experimental data and field measurements, a discrepancy in the maximum roof deformation between the test and field monitoring results under typical geological conditions is 8%. This indicates a favorable alignment between the test results and the real-life scenario. In conclusion, the proposed targeted control technique is implemented in the field by integrating the mining invariant equation and gangue volume expansion equation. This not only validates the effectiveness of the technology but also offers valuable insights for the future utilization of RCRM technology under comparable circumstances.

The current emphasis on environmental problems has focused attention on the massive nationwide accumulations of mine, mill, and smelter wastes that represent potential air and water pollution hazards. The pollution hazards can be reduced or eliminated by utilization or stabilization of these wastes. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, since the inception of the Solid Waste Disposal Act of 1965, has been conducting research to determine the practicality of various utilization and stabilization procedures. Investigations include partial extractions of desirable waste components and full utilization of the wastes as simulated soils or in ceramic or other structural products. Chemical, vegetative, and combined chemical-vegetative methods of stabilization have been actively studied. This report updates information previously developed by the Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center and presents the current status of antipollution solid waste work 1/,2/.

The measurement of deflection of designed diaphragm walls is critical for near real time information to assess wall and soil behaviour as the internal area is excavated in a controlled manner. Data enables the site team and designers to check performance of the design, which is linked to safeguarding the site and the external stakeholders.This paper documents the use of Shape Accel Arrays at the Tottenham Court Road Western Ticket Hall during excavation and propping within the diaphragm wall for the Crossrail project. It shows how the data obtained was used within the site settlement management plan to assist in the control of the works and the information used for Value Engineering purposes that benefitted the project.The use of Shape Accel Arrays for measuring the deflection of retaining walls is not commonplace in the UK construction industry, with the Tottenham Court Road Western Ticket Hall being one of the first times they have been used in such a way. A detailed analysis of the data obtained from the instruments has been undertaken, and compared to the results obtained from the manual inclinometers that were read next to the SAAs. The advantages of the relatively new SAAs have been discussed, as well as other applications of the instrument.
