"The first commercial installation in the mineral industry of the ""Verti-Press"" pressure filter was made by Falconbridge Limited at the Strathcona Concentrator to filter copper concentrate. The filtercake produced contains 6 - 7% H2O, an improvement from the 12 - 13% H2O produced by an internal drum filter, at rates of up to 20 t/hr. A novel slurry feed system incorporates a hose pump and a pressurized slurry accumulator.INTRODUCTIONIncreased copper production from Falconbridge Limited operational mines in the Sudbury Area has exceeded the current refinery capacity. A copper concentrate has been produced to overcome this constraint and has been shipped to custom smelters either as a slurry or as a 12 - 13% moisture filtercake utilizing an internal drum filter.With the treatment of the new Deep Copper Zone from the Strathcona Mine, copper concentrate production was forecast in excess of the installed dewatering capacity. The filtercake was too wet to transport by truck and the custom smelter refused to handle this product at the truck unloading site. The filtercake had to be trucked to a rail spur and transloaded into gondola cars. This system was expensive, incurred unaccountable losses and the concentrate was assessed a moisture penalty.To reduce the concentrate moisture content to permit direct shipment by truck, two basic systems were available; vacuum filter followed by a thermal dryer or a pressure filter. Past experience with the high capital and operating costs of dryers led Falconbridge to closely examine the pressure filter alternative.COPPER CONCENTRATE PRODUCTIONThere are two separate circuits at the Strathcona Mill; one treating nickel ore and the other treating copper ore.The rougher concentrates produced by both circuits are conditioned with lime and cyanide before the copper-nickel separation in a flotation columns. The concentrate consisting of cha lcopyrite with mi nor cubanite is very clean as shown in Table I. Currently 50% of the copper in the plant feed reports as copper concentrate, in the past, this has been as high as 70%."

"With energy costs increasing and ore grades diminishing, the role of preconcentration in hard-rock mining operations has gained greater interest. Dense medium separation is a process that can be conducted at particle sizes from 250 to 0.50 mm with high separation efficiency, depending on liberation characteristics of the valuable minerals. Pilot-plant case studies conducted at the SGS Lakefield site are presented, including mineral systems such as spodumene, sulfide-bearing gold ores, and complex sulfide ores. These case studies demonstrate that, for amenable ores, mass rejection of 20–60% is possible while maintaining recoveries of greater than 90%.RÉSUMÉ Au vu de la hausse des coûts liés à l’énergie et du déclin de la teneur des minerais, le rôle de la préconcentration dans les exploitations minières en roche dure présente un intérêt croissant. La séparation (ou concentration) en milieu dense est un processus pouvant être mené sur des calibres de grains de 250 à 0.50 mm avec un rendement élevé de séparation, en fonction des caractéristiques de libération des constituants des minéraux métallifères. Preconcentration has been practiced in the industry for many years, and is gaining greater interest as the industry copes with processing lower grade, more difficult ores, which typically require finer grind sizes and incur higher energy costs.The benefits of preconcentration are:• lower mining costs, which allows for nonselective mining;• lower process capital and operating costs (e.g., resulting from reduced grinding, flotation, and fines disposal stages);• increased ore reserves, which provides the potential to treat lower grade ore;• increased mine production without expansion of the existing plant or concentrator;• reduced overall tailings impoundment by converting the reject into a byproduct (e.g., underground backfill or aggregate);• improved efficiency of downstream processes (e.g., silica removal in electric arc furnace feed, removal of softer sliming minerals prior to grinding);• potential application to brownfield operations and greenfield projects; and• a “green” process option, which reduces processing energy consumption;– reduces mill feed;– increases stage metal recovery (higher grade feed);– increases mill metal output per tonne processed;– reduces surface plant, tailings dump, and tailings pond requirements because the plant has a small footprint and can be installed underground; and– can be applied to retreatment of old tailings dumps to recover metal values and reduce environmental impacts (e.g., dissolved metal runoff, acid drainage)."

"For rock socketed drilled shafts, it is a common practice not to include the frictional resistance of overburden soils into the nominal capacity estimation. The primary reason often being cited is “overburden soils resistance is negligible compared to that of rock socket resistance.” However, in certain geological conditions, where the rock layer is located at greater depths, friction resistance from overburden layers can be significant. In addition, at such great depths, shaft drilling becomes very complicated and expensive. In these situations, considering the resistance of the overburden layers can be an economic alternative.This paper presents a case study of an Osterberg cell (O-cell) load test conducted on a 161.8 feet long and 78-inch diameter instrumented test shaft. Based on initial designs, a 72-inch diameter rock socket of lengths 23 and 26 feet was required to provide a LRFD factored friction resistance of 3,200 kips. The load test results revealed that the material in the 72-inch diameter socket does not represent a true rock. However, the test results also proved that the factored friction resistance of overburden layers is greater than the required design resistance. Based on the load test results, it was decided to allow the overburden soils frictional resistance to be considered in the shaft design, resulting in significant economic savings.INTRODUCTIONRock socketed drill shaft design guidelines of various State Department of Transportation (DOTs) agencies allow friction and/or end bearing resistance of only the rock socket portion into the design capacity estimation. It is typical to neglect the frictional resistance of overburden soils. However, in certain geological conditions where the rock layer is at greater depths, friction resistance of the overburden soils can be significant. In this case the friction resistance of overburden soils was verified via the specified instrumented O-cell test program and then used as part of the design capacity.PROJECT DESCRIPTIONAs part of I-29 improvement project, Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) planned to replace the dual four lane bridges that cross the Floyd River in Sioux City, Iowa with dual six lane bridges (Fig. 1). Expected benefits from this improvement include improved safety, traffic operations and roadway infrastructure conditions.BRIDGE SUBSTRUCTUREThe project consists of two individual bridges; a new south bound bridge and a new north bound bridge. The south bound bridge is 646-ft long and the north bound bridge is 644-ft long. Both are six-span, pretensioned and pre-stressed concrete beam bridges of varying width. Bridge foundations were designed such that the abutments of both bridges will be supported on driven steel piles and the bridge piers will be on drilled shaft foundations."

Weak rock mass and poor flow of material can cause excessive ore loss and dilution in sublevel caving. This paper proposes a method to establish design parameters for an inclined deposit within a weak rock mass and evaluates its effectiveness through a case study. In order to solve the problem of low production capacity and poor safety conditions of sublevel caving mining at the Yingfangzi silver mine in China and to ensure a smooth production from the refractory ore body, it is necessary to select appropriate stope structure parameters. Based on random medium theory of gravity flow and the improved equation of ore discharge in random medium, an end wall drawing experiment is carried out to determine the optimum design and flow parameters. It was observed from the experiment that, due to the influence of the randomness of particle movement, there is a mismatch in the flow parameter measurement. The flow characteristics and distribution of the marker particles are different from that of the tested particles resulting in large drawbody shape distortion. The study finds that the flow parameters obtained by the new method are more practical and account for drawpoint width and recommends that the new method for determining the sublevel stope height is used when the drawbody is a non-standard ellipsoid. The outcomes have shown a significant reduction in the dilution and improvement in the recovery rates, and the safety and efficiency of mining have been greatly improved.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated temperature increases on the heads of resin-grouted bolts as indicators of the integrity of the anchoring of the bolt. Expected increases were calculated by the finite difference method; the calculations were checked by bolthead temperature measurements, both in the laboratory and in the field. The accuracy of the calculations varies with the validity of assumptions necessary to the process. Measurements in the laboratory produced a temperature rise of about 4.00 F on the head of a 4-foot bolt when installed with a full column of resin. This increase remained for about 30 minutes. Similar increases were noted on bolts installed at the White Pine mine, White Pine, Mich., but bolthead temperature increases in the mine lasted only about 10 to 15 minutes. When partial columns (reduced amounts) were used, the temperature increases were smaller.

The Swedish mining companies LKAB and Boliden, the equipment supplier Atlas Copco, the general contractor NCC and the specialist company Reflex joined forces in 2005 to advance the field of rock technology for the purpose of mining and underground construction. The creation of the company Rock Tech Centre is part of the strategy developed by the Swedish mining industry to strengthen co-operation with industry, academia and society. This paper outlines the current R&D strategies developed for the industry in general, discusses what focus areas are selected and provides some details on the current RTC project portfolio, especially faster and better drifting.

The Bureau of Mines developed a spectrochemical method to determine six constituents in coal ash in the following concentration ranges: silica 9 to 63 percent, alumina 7.5 to 35 percent, ferric oxide 2 to 30 percent, calcium oxide 1 to 29 percent, magnesium oxide 0.5 to 6 percent, and titanium oxide 0.5 to 4 percent. Samples of coal ash are fused with a mixture of lithium tetraborate and vanadium pentoxide. The resulting beads are crushed, mixed with powdered graphite, and briquetted. The pellets are analyzed spectrographically, using controlled high-voltage spark excitation. Vanadium serves as the internal standard. Effects due to matrix variations are minimized by fusion with lithium tetraborate. Intensity ratios of selected analytical lines are determined photometrically, Concentrations are read from analytical curves, prepared from synthetic standards, relating log intensity ratios to log concentration. A combustion procedure is used to determine sulfur tri-oxide. The method is most useful when large numbers of coal ashes must be analyzed but a high degree of accuracy is not essential.

This paper on methods and costs of mining at the Westside mine, in the Tri-State zinc-and lead-mining district (Missouri-Kansas-Oklahoma), is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. Methods and equipment used in drilling, loading, and underground transportation have changed radically since the latest Bureau of Mines publications2/ on mining methods in the district were published more than 20 years ago. More efficient methods and machines have been developed in order to maintain low operating costs in the face of rising labor and supply costs and lower grade ore. The rate of conversion to mine mechanization was disappointing at times; local conditions required the development of special equipment, and available rock-moving machines had to be remodeled and strengthened.

The Mahakipawa gold deposit is located 21 km northwest of Blenheim. It became the site of a small hardrock gold rush in 1889 following nearby alluvial gold discoveries in 1888. The study investigates the geology of the area of hard rock mining in the vicinity between Cullens and Waikakaho Creeks. The Marlborough Schist which hosts the gold depos, it consists of polydeformed greenschist facies quartzofeldspathic psammitic, pelitic and volcanigenic schist.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines applied its mine fire diagnostic method to an abandoned anthracite mine fire site in Carbondale, Lackawanna County, P A. The technique to locate fires in abandoned coal mines and coal refuse piles includes the determination of hydrocarbon concentrations in mine gases, the imposition of an underground gas flow direction, and use of a surface mapping method, to define heated and cold zones in underground coal strata. The heated zones at Carbondale were characterized by elevated methane concentrations. The results of 25 communication tests were analyzed to define 2 large (approximately 100 by 250 ft) and 5 small, isolated heated zones. An approximate correlation existed between the location of the heated zones and areas of anomalous snow melt. The correlation between the results of the diagnostic? test and subsurface temperatures was not significant.

THIS is in part a review paper, indicating the various steps that have been taken in developing hindered-settling apparatus, some of the standard data that have been obtained, and some of the conclusions one is led to as to the effect of it in improving concentrating-methods and machinery, and in part it brings in some unpublished work. CAUSES OF LOSS IN ORE-CONCENTRATION. In making a study of the separation of valuable minerals from the waste gangue, particularly by water concentrators, it is necessary to define, first of all, what are the causes of-loss that are likely to interfere with the concentration. Having made this definition; we can then study to see in what way the machines make their losses, and plan remedies for them in an intelligent way. Losses may be stated to occur as included grains, as flat or long grains, as fine free mineral, and as absolute slime. We will take, these up one by one, as follows: Included Grains.-Fig. 1 shows by a set of diagrams how included grains may occur: first, where the heavy mineral grains attached to the quartz are of large size; secondly, where they are of small size ; and thirdly, where very fine particles of heavy mineral are included in the quartz. We have to decide in regard to included grains whether they are rich enough to go direct to, the furnace, or poor enough to throw away, or whether they lie between these two points and require recrushing as the only means of severing the values from the waste. This last case is the only one requiring special treatment at our hands. The investigations carried on at the fuel-testing plant of the United States Geological Survey at St. Louis in 1904-1907 included tests of the steaming and gas-producing qualities of many coals and of the possibilif3 of their improvement by briquetting, together with washing and coking tests and tests of some of the resulting coke in the cupola. These tests were part of a general inquiry into the manner of utilizing most efficiently each of the coals under investigation. The equipment used in the cupola tests of coke, the manner of conducting the tests, and the essential results have been described in publications of the Geological Survey," and only the more important conclusions to be drawn from the tests are mentioned in the following pages. The tests were made to show the fitness of the cokes for foundry purposes, but an incidentlll result was to show foundry men and the coke producers the advisability of studying the conditions of foundry practice. The present bulletin, published by the Bureau of Mines because the analyzing and testing of fuels have been transferred from the Gilological Survey to the Bureau of Mines, briefly reviews the status of the coke industry, some features of practice in the use of coke in the foundry, the probable happenings of a cupola heat, and the reasons for modifying charging practice so that a particular coke can be used to best advantage.

The Port Authority of Allegheny County North Shore Connector (NSC) Project involves TBM excavation of twin 690 m (2,240 lf) precast segment lined light rail tunnels through soil and rock under the Allegheny River and a narrow, downtown city street. The $435 M project is funded 80% ($348 M) by the Federal Government, 17% ($72.5 M) by the State of Pennsylvania and 3% ($14.5 M) by Allegheny County. Along the tunnel alignment are a historic building on shallow foundations, modern buildings on deep foundations, and one building constructed directly over the alignment. The project includes construction of twin 369 m (1200 lf) cut and cover concrete box tunnels and an underground station shell. This paper provides an overview of general site conditions, current project status and construction challenges for the Twin Tunnels and North Shore Light Rail Station.

Preliminary to an experimental study of selected physical properties of helium and related gases) the Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center conducted a data-gathering literature survey. This report combines the results of the 1961-63 literature search into a usable format. The data accumulated on the physical properties are presented in tables and graphs. The data in the tables were chosen for exact representation and comparison of specific values. An attempt was made to select the most reliable and consistent value available for a given property without extensively analyzing each source reference. The methods of evaluation are discussed later. The graphs show trends and anomalies which may be obscure in tabular form. "Behaviour of rebar bolts subjected to combined shear and bending in underground potash mining applications is not well understood. An experimental investigation compared load applied to resin-grouted No. 25 metric rebar to theoretical load, calculated using elastic bending theory. Distributed optical sensing (fibre optic) technology allowed axial strain measurements at 1.25 mm increments along the length of rebar. Experimental procedure, data processing methods, and equipment improvements are needed for field applications of optical sensing technology. Opportunities to observe deformations of rebar, as shown in Figure 1, are rare because it is unusual in underground potash mining to excavate supported ground. In this situation, a block of potash containing a rebar bolt had failed."

One of the problems in the carbothermic aluminum process is the substantial loss of aluminum compounds as vapors due to the high temperatures in the process. In order to solve this problem a Vapor Recovery Unit (VRU) is proposed. In this unit operation the aluminum vapor undergoes a series of heterogeneous non-catalytic reactions forming solid, liquid and gas products. In this work a model for the simulation of this unit was developed which includes heat and material balances as well as heterogeneous non-catalytic reactions. The model leads to a system of differential equations; its solution was implemented in Matlab giving as a result a stage-by- stage solid-fluid reaction model.

ALL mineral production? of Can11.da is transported in a mine car at some stage during its extraction. There are as many types and varieties of mine cars as there are of mines. Many of the cars in use were developed in the blacksmith shop. Others were designed by engineers and improved by the mine foremen and the mechanics. Every mine car has the ideas of miner, blacksmith, mechanic, and engineer incorporated in it. Many of these ideas are not generally known. This paper was written to make at least some of this information available to the mining industry. In drawings, tables, and notes, it gives all the important details pertaining to the cars. It .does not recommend any particular type of car for any particular piece of work, nor does it present drawings from which a car can be built. It gives the engineer or master mechanic information on many cars which he can apply to his own particular problems. It is hoped that this information will be of use to mine operators. If a few new ideas are conceived as a result of the paper, the author will feel that the effort of compiling it has been worth while. In order to obtain the data for the preparation of the paper, a questionnaire, copy of which is here reproduced, was sent to all the operating mining companies in Canada. An accompanying letter briefly explained the purpose of the paper and asked for co-operation in furnishing as complete information as possible.
