INTRODUCTION The Ballard Siphon was built in 1935 and consists of two 91.4 cm (36-inch) diameter wood-stave pipes. These pipes convey sewer flowsunder the Ship Canal from northwest Seattle and the Ballard Regulator to the North Interceptor and the West Point Treatment plant. The siphons were constructed using open cut construction, are now buried in the sediment on the floor of the canal, and have severely limited ability to be dewatered, inspected, or cleaned. The existing siphon is 394.7 m (1,295 feet) long from the junction structure on the southern shoreline to the regulator structure on the north. The location of the Ballard Siphon is shown in Figures 1 and 2. The area around the Ballard Siphon has become more populated and developed since the siphon was built. Additionally, the Ballard Siphon is subject to high flows that are greater than the capacity of the pipelines. This has resulted in predict-able Combined Sewer Overflows(CSO?s) whenever a large, long duration rain event occurs. The aged pipeline of uncertain viability has become a critical piece of the sewer system infrastructure. Because of the age of the pipelines and their importance, a sonar survey was completed on both barrels of the Ballard Siphon in December of 2005. The sonar images appeared to indicate crown intrusion of the wood-stave pipes, which suggested that the pipes were in imminent danger of collapse. As a result, an Emergency Declaration was executed by King County and the Ballard Siphon Replacement Project was initiated. Staheli Trenchless Consultants was retained to perform feasibility studies to deter-mine the viability of using microtunneling and horizontal directional drilling (HDD) for replacement of the Ballard Siphon. For the evaluations, the preferred site location was determined to be at or near the site of the existing Ballard Siphon in order to minimize the ancillary sewer work which would accompany moving to a new site. To meet flow demands and hydraulic requirements, the replacement siphon needed a mini-mum equivalent diameter of 182.9 cm (72 inches). This could be accomplished with a number of different siphon diameters and configurations including, but not limited to, three 106.7 cm (42-inch) diameter pipelines, two 152.4 cm (60-inch) pipelines, or two 91.44 cm (36-inch) pipelines and a 121.9 cm (48-inch) pipeline.

The ability of computers to create synthetic representations of the real world in virtual reality offers a number of opportunities to enhance training methods used in the mining industry. Unfortunately, the training effectiveness of virtual reality systems currently used in the mining industry has received only limited testing. Miner Simulation (MinerSIM), an augmented reality system with integrated hypermedia suitable for training underground miners in the basics of using a jackleg drill to install rock bolts in a virtual mine environment is in its evaluation process at the University of Missouri-Rolla Experimental Mine. This paper discusses evaluation methodologies of the MinerSIM system, which consists of experimental and control groups with control students learning via traditional lecture and text formats. Preliminary results from usability tests of the first part of MinerSim, which is an online tutorial on underground rock bolting, are presented.

For the 36th consecutive summer, the Colorado Mining Association Education Foundation and the Colorado School of Mines have sponsored “A Total Concept of the Mining Industry” for kindergarten through grade 12 teachers. Teachers from 34 states, plus the District of Columbia and two foreign countries, have graduated from the four-week course. They received six hours of recertification credit. This summer 31 teachers from Colorado, Kentucky, Virginia and Alaska completed the program. The course is unique from other shorter courses in that it solicits teachers of all disciplines from all K-12classes. In addition to the expected earth science and mathematics teachers, the Class of 2004 consisted of educators who teach music, chemistry, biology, social studies, history, basic English and world history. Others in the program included those who teach American history, physical and life science, remedial reading, consumer/family studies, “world of work,” language arts, engineering technology, environmental science, world geography, human anatomy and physiology, and business.

The only significant iron ore deposit in Hungary could be found in Rudabánya. The mine was closed in 1986. The area of Rudabánya was always the home of heavy mining activity. In former times, mainly silver and other non -ferrous metals were excavated.

Caterpillar’s 797 327-t (360-st) mining truck is currently being tested at the company’s proving facilities. Mine evaluations began in the second quarter. The unit will be commerically available in North America in 2000 and worldwide in 2001. The new model is the largest of Caterpillar’s off high-way truck line. In addition, the company has replaced its 966F series II and 970 F wheel loaders with the966G and 972G models. 797 mining haul truck Caterpillar developed the 797 mining haul truck in response to mining companies seeking to reduce cost per ton in large-scale operations. The 797 is sized to work with loading shovels used in large mining operations. And Caterpillar will match the body design to the material being hauled, to optimize pay-loads.

The use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) for tunnel construction of long tunnels in the Andes of South America has been of mixed success in the past due to a variety of reasons and key lessons can be recognized. A review of past TBM tunnel projects in the Andes has unveiled some interesting findings for different TBM tunnel approaches with both world records of progress as well as nearly in-completed projects with machines being abandoned. Key considerations for the use of TBMs for tunnel construction in the Andes include geological issues; (faults, rock type, rock strength, rock abrasivity, durability, groundwater inflows),depth of cover and the potential for overstressing/rockbursts, site access and terrain, portal locations, intermediate access possibilities, minimum tunnel size, support requirements, contractor and labour experience, and project schedule demands. TBMs offer highly recognized schedule benefits(high progress, no concrete lining) for a project if intermediate access adits are limited as well as hydraulic benefits for water conveyance projects. Minimum specifications for TBMs can be easily developed to suit the unique requirements of any project so as long as all factors are carefully considered. The overall conditions and factors associated with some projects may suggest that it is not appropriate to use TBMs due to a perceived high risk. Finally, access for geotechnical investigations by drilling in the commonly steep terrain of the Andes is typically difficult and often not impossible. Alternative approaches for geotechnical investigations for TBM tunnels including comprehensive mapping, high-resolution airborne electric-magnetics for delineation of possible fault zones, and rock block sampling is presented and discussed.

AEROPHINE® 3418A is a unique sulfide mineral promoter produced by Cyanamid, based on phosphine (PH3) chemistry. It has proven effective as a collector for the sulfide minerals of copper and particularly lead (galena), as well as for secondary gold and silver values. AEROPHINE 3418A has widest application as a Cu and/or Pb collector for complex ores of Cu-Zn and Pb-Zn, which frequently have significant quantities of associated precious metal values. Advantages shown in the use of AEROPHINE 3418A are improved selectivities against Zn-and Fe-sulfides, increased precious metals recoveries, reduced total collector consumptions for Cu and/or Pb flotation, and increased flotation kinetics leading to higher recoveries of these values. Operating plant, pilot plant and laboratory test data from treat-ing different ores are presented, demonstrating the advantages in use and preferred application of AEROPHINE 3418A.

The objective of this research was to establish the relationship between production, consumption and energy cost in the surface mining of bituminous coal. Specific energy sources such as diesel, gasoline, electricity, explosives and bituminous coal were considered in this study. Gain in net energy, proportion of the cost of energy consumption and total energy cost relative to total revenue of extracted coal were determined, and a new energy efficiency index and a new energy-cost ratio were established. A case study on an operating surface coal mine was carried out to demonstrate the application of the newly developed method. The results of this study can be used by the mine operators in establishing strategies for the optimization of energy production and consumption, and for reducing the cost of bituminous coal extraction.

The Leeville underground mine has been in operation since 2006 and currently produces 3,200 tons of ore per day with an average gold grade of 0.4 opt. The mine has a large horizontal extent of 2,500 feet by 500 feet and a vertical extent of 20 to 200 feet. High density of joints occurs within the host rock. Based on Rock Mass Rating and field observation, the Leeville ground conditions are characterized as poor to very poor. As such, heavy ground support is required for the mining operation in Leeville. Ore zones with a height in excess of 10 m (35 feet) are considered for longhole stoping. A typical stope measures 6.0 m (20 feet) wide, 30 to 55 m (100 to 180 feet, depending on the ground conditions) long and 10 to 30 m (35 to 100 feet, depending the thickness of ore body) high, yielding 10,000 to 20,000 tons when completed. Narrow ore zones, less than 10 m (35 feet), are mined using cut and fill. These drifts are 4.6 m (15 feet) wide by 4.6 m (15 feet) high. Based on the afore-mentioned poor ground condition, the establishment of a ground control monitoring system is key to operating both safely and successfully. The ground control monitoring system is composed of comprehensive instrument design and installation. Instruments include Multi-Point Borehole eXtensometers (MPBX) and Stretch Measurement to Assess Reinforcement Tension (SMART) cables. The monitoring system covers the mining zones and infrastructure openings. After about two year?s applications and measurements, useful data has been and continues to be collected to use in future stope and infrastructure structure design. In 2008, the authors developed a methodology for identifying underground coal mines at high risk for major-hazard events. It focused on major hazard-related violations of safety standards associated with high-risk conditions. Later, using a sample of 103 mines with 2008 and 2009 data, injury measures and U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) citation data were combined into a safe performance index (SPI). The SPI was used to assess the relative safety-related risk of mines, including by mine-size category. In this paper, comparisons are made of SPI-associated, normalized safety performance measures across mine-size categories, with emphasis on small-mine safety performance as compared to large and medium-sized mines. Mineral flotation is effective over a relatively narrow particle size range of approximately 10 to 100 µm. If the upper particle size limit can be increased, however, a run-of-mine ore may be coarse ground, and only the middlings are ground further to achieve required grades. This will result in significant energy savings and increased throughput. In this communication, methods of increasing the upper particle size limit will be discussed on the basis of a flotation model that can predict flotation from both hydrodynamic and surface chemical parameters. An example of increasing flotation recovery by control of a chemistry parameter is given.

"Longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique is one of the important methods for underground thick seam extraction in China. The coal seam in LTCC panel is divided into two parts: bottom-coal and top-coal. The bottom-coal is mined by conventional longwall method while the top-coal is mined by caving method. The top-coal caving process in LTCC and block caving process in metal mine are both gravity flow of loose ore/coal blocks. However, the presence of caving shield in LTCC makes the characteristics of drawing body shape in the two caving processes differ a lot. This paper discusses the influence of caving shields on the characteristics of drawing body shapes in light of recent studies of the top-coal drawing process. The theoretical model for describing the drawing body shape in LTCC is proposed both along the seam strike and seam inclination. Then, the experimental data are used to validate the correctness of the theoretical model. Furthermore, two examples of how the theoretical findings assist LTCC mining are given and discussed.INTRODUCTIONLongwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique and large-cutting-height mining technique have been widely used for extracting thick coal seams in China. About 0.6–0.7 billion metric tons of coal come from longwall top-coal caving panels every year. Metal-slag phase compositions of molten iron and ilmenite smelting slags or solid titanate phases were determined between 1500° and 1700°C. The influence of oxygen partial pressure and impurity oxide additions including Al2O3, Cr2O3, MgO and SiO2 were investigated along with amount of reductant-carbon. The XRD revealed that the quenched slag crystallized as pseudobrookite (M3O5) solid solution in equilibrium with iron. Silica additions formed separate silicate phases because of its immiscibility in the titanate phase. Under strong reducing conditions iron oxide was almost completely reduced and the slag phase solidified as a consequence thereof. Cr2O3. SiO2 and MnO were also reduced to a high degree. Under weak reducing conditions the slag was fully molten and non of the impurity oxides were reduced. A significant portion of manganese, some magnesia and silicon, in the form of SiO gas, were removed via the gas phase due to their considerable vapour pressures. Alumina was not reduced under the applied conditions. A comparison of the experimental results with industrial data clearly suggested that industrial ilmenite smelting process operated under non-equilibrium conditions.

Ball mills are commonly used for regrinding operations in the mineral processing industry. But, in recent times, efforts are being made at the introduction of stirred mills particularly for those instances where very fine grinding is required. Media type (steel shot, glass beads, alumina balls and crushed quartz), media size, mill speed and the number of passes required to obtained the target product size are studied. The product size and energy consumption are used in the evaluation of the test results. The grinding media size, shape, density, filling ratio, mill circumferential speed and grinding time play a distinct role in product size fineness.

Smooth roll crushers are widely used as secondary crushers, operating most effectively when set for size reductions in a ratio between 3 or 4 to I. The feed supplied to these units varies from 13 to 102 mm in size and the product obtained ranges from 13 mm to about 20 mesh. Smooth roll crushers produce very few fines and absolutely no oversize. The diameter otfhe rolls varies with the clearance between them, feed size, and the coefficient of internal friction ofmaterial to be crushed, Detailed calculations of this relationship may be found in Unit operations of Chemical Engineering, (McCabe, W. The national Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health, Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multi-element ground support system, it is necessary to know when the material has developed a compressive strength of approximately 1 MPa (145 psi), the early threshold for safe re-entry of miner and machine into shotcreted mine workings at this value, the material has developed enough strength to be self-supporting and to allow for installation of other ground support components that require drilling of the shotcrete layer without degradation. NIOSH researchers have developed methods and portable test equipment to measure shotcrete strength on site in the first six hours after application using a partial beam test standard, a STM C 116-90 (1990). These advances were demonstrated in tests with five commercially available shotcrete mixes, sprayed as dry shotcrete using field expedient methods and equipment. The strength values from these tests allowed for real-time identification of the early strength threshold and were consistent with strengths reported using laboratory-type equipment. Measuring the early strength properties of shotcrete directly at the mine site can improve mine safety by identifying appropriate re-entry times and providing a convenient means of conducting on site quality control during shotcrete applications.

The support of the roof in coal mines remains a critical safety issue with 3 fatalities from roof falls in 2007 and 430 injuries from roof falls in 2006. A snapshot survey by the authors of room design and support details as well as unplanned falls of ground in the industry revealed some useful data concerning support use, seam details, fall dimensions, bolt lengths and spacing and the stand-up time.

"Mining has been a source of controversy for at least 500 years. “Since there has always been the greatest disagreement amongst men concerning metals and mining, some praising, others utterly condemning them…” (Agricola, 1556). In 2016, it is widely recognized that mineral resources and reserves must give due regard to the social license in order to operate.“Most commonly, the social license to operate (SLO) is understood to refer to ‘the ongoing acceptance and approval of a [project] by local community members and other stakeholders that can affect its profitability’ (Moffat, 2014).” “Social License to Operate has gained traction, in part, because it is also a concept which – while remaining poorly, technically defined – is generally easily and widely understood by community stakeholders (Bice, 2014).”A generation ago we learned that mining is based on a stable platform supported by three pillars, geology, mining and metallurgy. The three-legged stool is a very stable structure (Fig. 1).In 2016, it seems that we have added some other legs to the stool (Fig 2). The Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC Code) addresses “social, and governmental factors…” (JORC 2012), and refers specifically to social license in Section 4 of the Report Template “Estimation and Reporting of Ore Reserves.”The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Guidelines refer to “environmental, legal and social data…(CIM 2003).”Compared to these, the 2014 SME Guide is positively verbose stating “a discussion of any potential social or community related requirements and plans for the project and the status of any negotiations or agreements with local communities,” (SME 2014) although in all cases the scope of this disclosure is left at the discretion of the competent person.When there are more than three legs on the stool, it is imperative that all legs be constructed exactly to the design. Any one or more legs that are out of alignment will cause the stool to wobble.Engineers are trained to create designs to meet specifications. Loads can be estimated, forces calculated and cost studies completed that will lead to, not only a stable design, but the most efficient design that meets the specifications."

Atmospheric conditions underground are constantly changing and from a safety perspective, it is critical to identify when conditions are trending abnormally. Atmospheric monitoring in underground coal mines allows mine operators to analyze atmospheric conditions underground in real-time. Real-time monitoring can then be used to identify whether atmospheric conditions underground have become problematic. The implementation of a risk assessment and management process allows operators to then use a risk-informed decision making to identify comprehensive site specific ventilation parameters. Establishing risk-informed ventilation parameters and tracking conditions relative to these parameters, management can modify ventilation plans as mine conditions develop to manage evolving risks. Ventilation risk assessment and management allows developing atmospheric monitoring technologies to be fully utilized in order to increase safety standards in the United States. This paper reviews general risk assessment approaches, state of the art ventilation based risk assessment, and the risk assessment and management application within the United States regulatory framework.

Introduction The Homestake Mining Co. has always been big on gold. After 108 years in the business, the company and its principal product are almost synonymous. The relationship continues. On Sept. 28, 1985, Homestake held formal dedication ceremonies for its newest gold mine - McLaughlin. The McLaughlin open-pit operation is located in northern California, some 113 km (70 miles) northeast of San Francisco. It lies near the boundaries of three counties - Napa, Yolo, and Lake - and a portion of its facilities are located in each. McLaughlin was originally the site of the Manhattan mercury mine that produced nearly 80,000 flasks of the quicksilver from the 1860s to 1978. At the September dedication, Homestake renamed the mine in honor of the late Donald H. McLaughlin. McLaughlin was with Homestake for nearly 60 years. He rose from exploration geologist to his ultimate positions of chief executive officer, director, chairman of the board of directors, chairman emeritus, and chairman of the executive committee. The discovery of the McLaughlin deposit occurred in 1978, the last year of operation for the Manhattan mine. Homestake geologists used a newly developed model and found surface gold at the mine site. That same year, Homestake signed an agreement with the property owner and began a two-and-a-half year exploration program. An initial discovery announcement of 31.1 t (1 million oz) of gold was made in 1980. In 1981, this was revised to 93.3 t (3 million oz), or 18 Mt (20 million st) of ore grading 5.2 g/t (0.152 oz per st). Expected mine life is 20 years. Construction began in September 1983, following the issuance of stage one permits. Start-up of operations took place in early 1985 and the first gold-silver dore bar was poured on March 4. Since then, more than 540 kt (600,000 st) of ore has been milled, producing about 1.6 t (50,000 oz) of gold. Of special interest at McLaughlin is the use of three autoclaves for gold extraction. According to Homestake, this is a first. The autoclaves are designed for a 90% gold recovery rate. Early results have proven yields at this rate and higher.
