This paper addresses the impact of the variable speed drive on the particle size distribution in the product of a fully autogenous UG2 grinding circuit. It further discusses the impact of a varying particle size distribution in the product of the mill on the downstream classification and milling circuits. An industrial case study was used and data is presented to illustrate the techniques applied to identify the root cause of the shift in operational efficiency. The results achieved from both the investigation into the shift in plant efficiency and the sub-sequent corrective action taken illustrate that the root-cause methodology used in advance control can be effectively applied on production sites to both detect the shift and identify probable root-causes. The industrial example used confirms that the variable speed drive in a UG2 autogenous milling operation is a critical control parameter to ensure that the plant operates to design specifications.

The mining industry worldwide is currently facing a significant restructuring process. In most underground mines, widespread mechanization of the mining processes increases production while reducing staff numbers. At the same time, mining depths as well as the lateral spread of the mine workings are increasing. This ever-changing mining environment requires sophisticated solutions for the design and operation of underground mines. In fact, a reduced number of mining engineers is taking responsibility for everincreasing mine operations. This applies not only to the excavation of the minerals, but also to all other aspects of the mining operation, including health and safety, disaster management, and mine rescue organization. Most mining engineering graduates entering the industry lack experience in mine emergency management. Young engineer trainees must learn mine emergency management and rescue work in addition to their normal training experience on the job. Often, and unfortunately, emergency and rescue training at different mining companies is not carried out to the highest level and standard and with the best possible training outcomes. The tasks and challenges a young engineer faces while being trained in a new position do not leave much room for additional training in mine rescue and emergency management. At the same time, experienced, ?old hands? are retiring and cannot easily be replaced due to limited graduation numbers. Strategies are being developed at mining universities worldwide to train mining engineering students in handling mine emergency situations and to provide hands-on experience for managing potential accident and disaster scenarios underground. Two of these strategies, from the USA and from Central Europe, are presented in this paper. These specific strategies have to be seen under special consideration of the local and regional boundary conditions, but might serve as case studies for mining schools and universities in other countries.

"In self-aerated flotation machines, the gas rate depends on operational variables (e.g. froth depth and impeller speed), pulp properties (e.g. solid content and viscosity), and reagent addition (e.g. type and concentration of frother). The gas rate has a strong correlation with the flotation performance by influencing the gas dispersion properties and froth retention time. A factorial experimental design was used to study how the gas dispersion properties, the froth retention time, and the flotation performance respond to changes in froth depth and impeller speed (as the most common operational variables). An in-depth understanding of the effects of impeller speed and froth depth on the gas dispersion properties, especially the bubble surface area flux and froth retention time, is necessary to improve operating strategies for self-aerated flotation machines. All experiments were carried out in a 50 m3 selfaerated flotation cell in an iron ore processing plant. The results showed that the froth depth affected the metallurgical performance mostly via changing the froth retention time. The impeller speed had two important impacts on the metallurgical performance via varying both the froth retention time and the bubble surface area flux in the froth and pulp zones, respectively. The interaction effects of the froth depth and impeller speed were also established. This allowed us to develop a strategy for operating selfaerated flotation machines based on varying the froth depth and impeller speed with regard to the cell duty. An independent technical audit by a consultant is part of the accountability process of publicly owned or publicly quoted companies when raising finance through share issues or loans or the sale of equity, and of banks or development funds when granting loans. Africa is undergoing a renaissance in investment in its mining industry. It is forecast that capital investment, in major mining projects in Africa, will be over US$ 4.4 billion, in the next few years. Most, if not all, of the capital to be raised will require an independent technical audit. The aim of this paper is to assist the management of mining companies seeking finance in appreciating the role of such technical audits. The reasons for such audits, especially to attract international investment, are listed. The role of the audit is explained in assessing the underlying robustness of the company as ?a going concern? and the viability of any ?expansion plans?. Its use is emphasised in establishing the underlying value of the company based on the mine life as supported by the mineral reserves. The independent consultant role is stressed as a representative of the parties in a finance deal who cannot, in practice, carry out their own detailed and specialized technical due diligence. The various components of a typical audit are examined with examples of critical matters which may require resolution. The definitions, which are used commonly in audits, in respect of competence and reserves and resources, as stated by various regulatory bodies, are compared.

Analyses of accident records show that a better understanding of very basic strata control principles and practices, by production personnel, will improve worker safety. Workers, lack of knowledge, with respect to aspects of strata control, increases their exposure to such strata control risks. The primary objective of the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) project 02 02 07 was to develop tools for the transfer of strata control knowledge. Four such tools were developed, three of which focused on illiterate underground mine team members who are not yet able to take advantage of the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) learning process (see project outcomes 2, 3 and 4 below). The tools were designed to equip these workers with sufficient knowledge and ability to work safely underground until such time as they can take advantage of the MQA system. Project outcomes: 1 A four-minute video using animation to illustrate the causes and prevention of falls of roof in South African collieries. 2 Software to demonstrate the capability of reconstructing, interactively, accident scenes and actions that have taken place underground in stopes. 3 A strata control bridging course for illiterate mine team workers. 4 Small-scale wooden models that will be used to design life-size mock-up facilities to assist with the above mentioned bridging course. 5 Workshops and presentations to demonstrate the outcomes 1to 4 above.

Plant survey data has shown that gold recovery through a specific copper concentrator was significantly lower than copper recovery. Size-by-size analysis revealed that this was due to poor recovery of+75 µm and ?23 µm gold containing particles. In order to further investigate the nature of the gold losses, experiments were conducted at laboratory scale. Gold deportment studies on the laboratory flotation products revealed that coarse gold (+75 µm) reporting to the rougher tailing was predominantly associated with non-sulphide gangue. Further grinding of the plant rougher tailing improved recovery of gold and copper, while not affecting iron recovery, due to improved liberation of gold from non-sulphide gangue in coarse size fractions. EDTA extraction to remove surface contaminants showed a similar improvement for fine, liberated gold flotation.

In recent years several mine researchers have studied the optimization of cutoff grade with the purpose of maximizing Net Present Value (NPV). The best and most popular one is the Lane algorithm. Based upon the Lane algorithm it is possible to calculate the optimum cutoff grade for mine, mill, and refinery capacities for single metal deposits with variable grades. The Lane algorithm cannot be used in multiple metal deposits. The reason is that, while in single metal deposits six points are possible candidates for the optimum cutoff grade, in multiple metal deposits an infinite number points are possible candidates for the optimum cutoff grades and objective function evaluation of these infinite points is impossible. In this study the Golden Section search method was used to calculate optimum cutoff grades of multiple metal deposits for the same conditions as Lane assumed in single metal deposits. Based on this method, grade-tonnage distribution uncertainty space of problem is guessed. In the next step, by selecting test points in uncertainty space and evaluating the objective function at these points, a part of uncertainty space will be eliminated. The procedure is then repeated until the uncertainty space has been sufficiently reduced to ensure that the optimum cutoff grades have been located to the required accuracy. High pressure grinding technology has gained further interest in various industries. So far in the mining industry, machines are in operation in diamond mines and iron ore applications. In gold and copper ore processing, test work has been conducted showing considerable operational and process benefits. Similar benefits can be expected from HPGR applications in the platinum industry due to the preferred ore breakage along grain boundaries, thus liberating the PGE particles. This paper will provide an update on the state of high pressure grinding roll technology. Developments in the design of high pressure grinding rolls, for minimized maintenance requirements and availability just as high as conventional mills, will be presented. Plant flow sheets and concepts will be discussed, which allow for a reduction of capital and operating cost in comparison to existing two-stage milling circuits.

Performance prediction models for partial face mechanical excavators, when developed in laboratory conditions, depend on relating the results of a set of rock property tests and indices to specific cutting energy (SE) for various rock types. There exist some studies in the literature aiming to correlate the geotechnical properties of intact rocks with the SE, especially for massive and widely jointed rock environments. However, those including direct and/or indirect measures of rock fracture parameters such as rock brittleness and fracture toughness, along with the other rock parameters expressing different aspects of rock behavior under drag tools (picks), are rather limited. With this study, it was aimed to investigate the relationships between the indirect measures of rock brittleness and fracture toughness and the SE depending on the results of a new and two previous linear rock cutting programmes. Relationships between the SE, rock strength parameters, and the rock index tests have also been investigated in this study. Sandstone samples taken from the different fields around Ankara, Turkey were used in the new testing programme. Detailed mineralogical analyses, petrographic studies, and rock mechanics and rock cutting tests were performed on these selected sandstone specimens. The assessment of rock cuttability was based on the SE. Three different brittleness indices (B1, B2, andB4) were calculated for sandstones samples, whereas a toughness index (Ti), being developed by Atkinson et al.1, was employed to represent the indirect rock fracture toughness. The relationships between the SE and the large amounts of new data obtained from the mineralogical analyses, petrographic studies, rock mechanics, and linear rock cutting tests were evaluated by using bivariate correlation and curve fitting techniques, variance analysis, and Student?s t-test. Rock cutting and rock property testing data that came from well-known studies of McFeat-Smith and Fowell2andRoxborough and Philips3have also been employed in statistical analyses together with the new data. Laboratory tests and subsequent analyses revealed that there were close correlations between the SE and B4 whereas no statistically significant correlation has been found between the SE and Ti. Uniaxial compressive and Brazilian tensile strengths and Shore scleroscope hardness of sandstones also exhibited strong relationships with the SE. NCB cone indenter test had the greatest influence on the SE among the other engineering properties of rocks, confirming the previous studies in rock cutting and mechanical excavation. Therefore, it was recommended to employ easy-to-use index tests of NCB cone indenter and Shore scleroscope in the estimation of laboratory SE of sandstones ranging from very low to high strengths in the absence of a rock cutting rig to measure it until the easy-to-use universal measures of the rock brittleness and especially the rock fracture toughness, being an intrinsic rock property, are developed.

The unpaved road network on a surface mine is extensive, comprising numerous roads of varying construction and material qualities with highly variable traffic volumes. Existing haul road maintenance management systems (MMS) work well for predictable traffic volumes, but for complex mine road networks, the MMS becomes onerous. This results in sub-optimal road maintenance strategies with the attendant increase in total road-user costs and reduction in service. A real-time maintenance management system was thus sought to overcome the deficiencies of existing MMS for mine roads. Since most large mines operate trucks with on-board diagnostic data collation, linked through a centralized communication and GPS backbone, it was proposed that road condition could be monitored on a real-time basis through on-board vibration signature analysis. The aim of this paper is to present the development of a real-time mine haul road maintenance management system. Following are view of mine road maintenance practices, the real-time system architecture is introduced and the results of a field trial of on-board vibration signature assessment is presented. The trial results are discussed in the light of road defect signature recognition, analysis, signature repeatability and system limitations. This approach has applicability to other situations such as a network of district roads, subject to an analysis of the economic feasibility. The paper concludes that modern technology has the potential to apply maintenance as and where needed with possible reductions in authority cost and an improvement in service provided for the road user.

This study deals with the presentation of the mechanized longwall mining project introduced some years ago to increase productivity and output of Aegean Lignite Establishment (ELI) owned by Turkish Coal Enterprises (TKI.) and the comparison of this method with a planned alternative new mining method called ?shortwall mining? where continuous miners will be introduced as primary coal excavation machines. Following the planning phase, production costs have been calculated for both mining methods on the basis of a panel having a height of 7.5 m. In addition to cost analysis, both methods have been evaluated using ?the multi-dimensional objective system?. In this evaluation the value synthesis has been carried out according to scoring models. Lastly, the advantages and disadvantages of both production methods have been stated by analysing them according to related criteria. In the light of outputs gathered from the analyses, it has been determined that the shortwall mining method will out perform the longwall method. "A model of the flotation process can be used effectively for design and control. For design purposes it can be used to predict the performance of a large plant from laboratory and pilot plant data. It can be used for control purposes to assess the utility of any proposed operating modification to an existing plant, and it can also be used to determine optimal control settings for best operating performance.A model has been developed that will allow for variations in feed properties and for variations in fineness of grind. The model can be used to assess the effects of reagent addition rate, aeration rate and pulp level on plant performance and these are the control variables that are used individually or together in all operating flotation plants. The model provides for a distribution in the values for flotation rate constants, particle size and mineral fraction, and, because of its complexity, requires a large computer when it is to be applied to a typical plant configuration. The computational method that is used to apply this model to such configurations is described in this paper, and particular attention is paid to the problem of allowing for feedback of tailings from cleaners and recleaners."

The feasibility of using hydrogen to obtain clean steels is investigated. High hydrogen contents are generally considered as detrimental due to the risk of flakes, bubbles and breakouts during casting. Hydrogen can nonetheless be removed by degassing of the steel. The results of industrial campaigns, where total oxygen content and hydrogen content were monitored, are presented. High resolution microscopy of inclusions and laboratory experiments on the rate of inclusion removal by CaO-Al2O3 slags at different partial hydrogen have been carried out. So far, evidence that hydrogen may influence inclusions or the steel cleanliness is not clear. Keywords: hydrogen, cleanliness, inclusions.

Geology, and the detailed understanding of its properties, are fundamental to the optimal design and successful operation of any mine. To that end extensive fieldwork has been conducted at Anglo Platinum?s PPRust operation to collect geotechnical information both from exploration boreholes and in-pit mining faces. Since 1998, geotechnical data has been collected from over 337 km of exploration core, 7 km of exposed mining faces and more than 15 600 field and laboratory tests, in order to define the complete set of geotechnical properties for each rock type in the mining area. The geotechnical information collected is stored in two databases, SABLE Warehouse and MineMapper3D before it is imported into the Datamine mining software package. The geotechnical parameters, mining rock mass rating system (MRMR), uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), fracture frequency per metre (FF) and rock quality designation (RQD), are modelled using geostatistics to generate a 3D geotechnical block model. Data is interpolated between exploration boreholes and exposed mining faces and modelling is constrained, using wireframes, by rock type and structural features. By having detailed geotechnical information available in a 3D model that can be readily accessed and interpreted, significant production optimisations, feasibility studies and planning initiatives can be implemented. From a slope design perspective the model is used to target data deficient zones and highlight potentially weak rock mass areas. As this can be viewed in 3D, the open pit slopes can then be designed to accommodate the poor quality area before it is excavated. It also follows that geotechnical zones can be readily identified and the slopes optimised accordingly. Rather than viewing the drill and blast department as an isolated cost centre and focussing on minimising drill and blast costs, the fragmentation requirements of the comminution and load and haul business areas are studied. It is well understood that chemical energy is the cheapest form of comminution and that major downstream benefits can be derived by increasing drill and blast expenditure. 238 blasts were assessed to determine the optimum fragmentation requirements for ore and waste. Based on the study a mean fragmentation target of 150 mm was set for delivery to the crushing circuit and a mean fragmentation of 230 mm was set for waste loading from the pit. Substantial benefits have been realised in the drill and blast department by developing empirical correlations that relate the MRMR values in the geotechnical model to a blastability index, fragmentation, required powder factor and costs. In 1992, a paper was compiled highlighting a common-sense approach to electric smelting at Impala Platinum. Since then, the smelter complex has undergone considerable changes. Mineral economics, UG2 exploitation, and changing environmental legislation have enforced numerous process upgrades, yet a common-sense approach has always been adopted. This document details the major changes in the smelter complex at Mineral Processes (Minpro) over the past 15 years, and provides the rationale for the changes. A novel variation of the GYPCIX process for the treatment of the acid mine effluent water from Grootvlei is described, in which a number of valuable by products can be obtained and the product water can be used for a variety of different purposes. A conceptual case study is presented in which the important cost parameters are described and certain critical path activities are indicated in order to derive a Return on Investment evaluation according to methods previously published. The study indicates that the treatment costs can be dramatically reduced, provided that proper utilization of the by products is taken into account. There are many possible uses for the water. However, by far the most advantageous contribution to the RDP and the best return on capital is derived if the water is used to establish small-lot farming activities providing work opportunities for thousands of people and contributing several hundred million Rands to the GDP. Vastly improved social conditions will be generated in an area of Gauteng that is in danger of rapid deterioration and a contribution will be made to maintaining mining activities in this area. The environmental impact is positive.

By making use of genetic programming, empirical models for metallurgical processes can be evolved that are more cost-effective than models determined by means of classical statistical techniques. These methods explore populations of candidate models assembled from sets of variables, parameters and simple mathematical operators, and do not require explicit specification of model structures. The application of the proposed strategies is illustrated by means of a case study pertaining to the leaching of nickeliferous chromite ores. Modelling of the nickel and cobalt extraction from the ores yielded models of similar accuracy compared to those obtained by non-linear regression and artificial neural networks. However, in the case of the iron extraction from the ores, the genetic programming model was significantly more accurate than both the regression and neutral network models.

The paper reviews the results to date of an integrated research programme currently being conducted by CSIR Mining Technology, aimed at impacting significantly on concentrated mining with face advance rates of up to 20 times faster than presently achieved. Consideration is given to the interplay between innovative technologies for continuous non-explosive mining or rock comminution underground and lateral hydraulic transportation in cross cuts, haulages and eventually hydro hoisting. Novel technologies for underground comminution of reef and development waste and an innovative pumping system suitable for the hydraulic transportation of coarse comminuted rock are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on South African gold mine reef and waste samples comminuted by electric shock wave comminution technology. The innovative TORE® pump system appears to be well suited for the successful hydraulic transportation of rock, produced by electric shock wave comminution, at solids concentrations between 45 % and 67 % by mass.

This Technical Note was presented as a poster at the Western Cape Mineral Processing Symposium held in August 2001 The cleaning of fine coal (-1000 µm) in today?s coal preparation plants is an economically important factor. Coals with high ash contents are, in general, commercially undesirable. Current well-known techniques for treating fine coal include froth flotation and spirals. The primary critical factor with regards to spirals is the efficiency of the process whereas that of flotation, is the cost of there agents used. Research into enhanced gravity separation techniques has resulted in several commercially available enhanced gravity separators. This project was based on a preliminary investigation into the feasibility of one such separator, to effectively treat fine (-500 µm) coal. Experimental variables included particle size and speed of rotation of the said instrument. The performance of the separator was compared to the results obtained from liquid density separations done for the two coal fractions evaluated. From the results obtained in this preliminary study it appears that the piece of equipment investigated does not measure up to expectations. Recommendations for further investigation include the evaluation of the instrument on other South African coals to obtain conclusive results.
