"Although the first large-scale application of copper recovery by solvent extraction (SX) took place in Zambia in the early 1970s, it is only in the last decade that this technology has become widely employed in this part of the world and is now a mainstay unit operation in most copper hydrometallurgical flowsheets. The mineralogy of the ores in the African Copper Belt, and hence the characteristics of the African leach liquors, differ significantly from those in Chile and the south-western USA, where copper SX has had a long and successful history. These differences provide operators, metallurgists, reagent vendors and engineers with many challenges: new approaches are needed to adapt this technology for successful implementation in this region. This paper examines typical operating practice in the African Copper Belt, discusses differences compared with other parts of the world and looks at some of the challenges and opportunities presented by these flowsheets. INTRODUCTION Following the success of the Rancher’s Bluebird and Bagdad solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX–EW) operations in Arizona in the late 1960s, the Tailings Leach Plant at Chingola, Zambia became the first large-scale copper SX plant in the world, commissioned in 1974. Despite the equipment design now being outdated, this plant still continues to operate successfully, indicating the versatility and adaptability of this technology. Today, there are some 75 copper SX operations worldwide with cathode production above 10 kt/a. The top ten producers currently account for some 40% of the global 4.3 Mt/a SX–EW copper production. South America (predominantly Chile and Peru) is the largest copper cathode-producing region, with annual production of some 2 Mt. The Central African Copper Belt (Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)) is second, with cathode production of 1.2 Mt/a and North America (USA and Mexico) third, producing close to 0.8 Mt/a Cu (Cytec data, 2014). The remaining 0.35 Mt/a comes from all other regions combined (referred to as “Rest-of-World”). Current and future operations in Zambia and the DRC are summarised in Figure 1. The industry in this region is characterised by a large number of small (3 to 20 kt/a) plants, mainly Chinese-owned, and a few very large (>200 kt/a) operations, owned by major multinational corporations. This paper examines typical operating practice in the African Copper Belt, discusses the differences compared with other parts of the world and looks at some of the challenges presented by the conditions, as well as innovations in flowsheets, reagents and operating conditions that have been introduced in these circuits."

The hard rock gold and platinum mines in South Africa have seen little development in the technology of mining. Holes are still drilled in the rock?though the latest water hydraulic rockdrills will complete that task in two minutes compared with the eight hours for hand drilling. Charging up is with far safer explosives and with available initiation systems it is no longer necessary to run up the face lighting each fuse. Movement of rock in the stope is predominately by means of scraper buckets and scraper winches?these were first introduced in the 1920s. Support is still mainly rock, either in situ pillars or backfill, or alternatively wood. Just as the mining process has changed very little it is hardly surprising that the productivity of mining is also relatively unchanged. Major efforts have been made to mechanize the mining process. However, most of the narrow reef mines where ?trackless mechanized mining? was introduced in the early1980s have reverted to conventional mining. In the wider reefs mechanized mining is the option of choice, unfortunately most of the gold and platinum mines have very narrow reefs that are not suitable to ?off the shelf? equipment. The move to introduce room-and-pillar mining into the narrow UG2 reefs is at the expense of mining more waste with the reef, fortunately it appears that appropriate waste and reef separation processes are available. Room-and-pillar mining followed by long hole drilling and blasting of a narrow slot of reef out of the pillars currently appears to offer the best of both worlds?maximum reef recovery with minimum waste dilution.

Laser metal deposition (LMD) is an additive manufacturing technique whereby a stream of metal powder is consolidated by a focused laser beam on the surface of a substrate or engineering component. The interaction zone between the laser beam and powder particles is scanned superficially, generating tracks of deposited material. The tracks are overlapped in a deposition strategy in accordance with slices of a CAD model. Successive layers of material are built up to fabricate a near net shape part. In this work, the technique is used to fabricate metal matrix composites (MMCs) by using an elementally blended feedstock combining metal and ceramic powders in the melt pool, which melt and solidify to create the required morphology. Ti6Al4V + TiC MMCs were produced with 10, 20, and 30 vol.% reinforcing ceramic, and Zr + TiC MMCs were fabricated with 10, 20, and 30 vol.% TiC. The deposited thin walls were analysed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and indentation testing. In both systems, the analysis revealed the presence of partially melted TiC particles embedded in the metal matrix along with fine dendrites of re-solidified ceramic. The dendritic structures in the Ti-based composites were confirmed as TiC, whereas in the Zr-based composite the Zr metal reacts with theTiC to form ZrC, leaving Ti in solid solution. Both the MMCs show an increase in microhardness with increasing ceramic (carbide)content, reaching a peak HV0.1 value of 500 in the Zr- based MMC and HV0.1 of 550 in the Ti based MMC.

This paper presents a unique method of monitoring the effectiveness of the planning process as well as the execution of mine plans. The method primarily determines the degree of deviation from the original mine plans by comparing actual mined areas to initially planned mining areas. The performance of mining operations is also measured by comparing actual and planned tonnages for a particular period. Once the degree of deviation from mine plans has been established the cause/s of the deviation can be determined through a simple fault tree analysis. Accurate identification of the reasons of deviation can aid the mine in selecting possible methods to correct the deviation. It is, however, beyond the scope of this paper to discuss the methods employed in correcting such deviations, as each mining operation will have unique causes of plan deviation and methods of remedying them. Deviations from the plan greatly affect the yields obtainable, which in turn affects the life of mine, thus having negative economic and financial implications. Accordingly, this paper presents a project management method which aims to reduce risk by improving planning systems to ensure optimum overall extraction of coal reserves.

The semi-solid metal casting process results in a unique solidification path. The microstructural features that were identified during the characterization of the as-cast microstructure, were used as evidence of the process history in order to determine the solidification path followed during the evolution of the microstructure. The morphology of the grains was characterized using SEM and the extent and distribution of the elemental segregation within the grain structure was analysed using EDS. A new loading apparatus was fabricated and used to conduct true-triaxial compression tests on KTB amphibolite, a crystalline basement rock. Tests in dry jacketed samples reveal that the intermediate principal stress has a significant effect on the onset of dilatancy and on rock strength, contrary to the implicit assumption made by Mohr-type failure criteria. Failure is induced through a shear fracture that dips steeply in the direction of the least principal stress. Experimental results lead to a new generalized strength criterion in terms of all three principal stresses. Unjacketed KTB amphibolite specimens, exposed to confining fluid, are considerably weaker than the jacketed ones, despite the negligible porosity and permeability. Failure is facilitated by several closely spaced subparallel tensile cracks normal to the least stress direction. SEM analysis suggests that microcracks developed upon dilatancy onset are penetrated and extended by the confining fluid, bringing about the unexpected rock failure mechanism at reduced stress levels. Un nouveau dispositif à chargement fut fabriqué et utilisé afin de réaliser un vrai essai de compression tri-axial sur KTB amphibolite, une roche cristalline du sous-sol. Les essais effectués sur échantillons enveloppés et secs révèlent que les contraintes principales intermédiaires affectent considérablement le début de la dilatance et la résistance de la roche, contrairement à la supposition fondée sur le critère de rupture de Mohr. La rupture est produite grâce à une cassure de cisaillement très incliner en direction où la contrainte principale est moindre. Ces résultats expérimentaux indiquent un nouveau critère de rupture général en fonction des trois contraintes principales. Les échantillons de KTB amphibolites sans enveloppe, exposés à un liquide confiné, sont considérablement plus faibles que ceux enveloppés, malgré la porosité et la perméabilité négligeable. La rupture est facilitée par plusieurs fissures de traction adjacentes et sub-parallèles, normales à la plus petite contrainte principale. L’analyse SEM suggère que les micro-fissures développent suivant le début de la dilatance, elles sont pénétrées et agrandies par le liquide confiné, produisant un mécanisme de rupture de roche inattendu, ceci à un niveau de contrainte réduit. Ein neuer Ladungsapparat wurde hergestellt um real - triaxiale Druckfestigkeitsversuche in KTB Amphibolit, einem kristallinen Grundgebirgsgestein, durchzuführen. Messungen in trockenen, bedeckten Proben zeigen that die mittlere Hauptspannung eine bedeutende Wirkung auf das Einsetzen von Dilatanz und auf die Stärke des Gesteins hat, im Gegensatz zu der impliciten Annahme auf Grund von Mohr-ähnlichen Versagungskriterien. Versagen ist induziert durch eine Scherfraktur die sich steil in die Richtung der geringsten Haupspannung nach unten senkt. Messergebnisse führen zu einem neuen, verallgemeinerten Stärke Kriterium dass auf alle drei Hauptspannungen basiert ist. Unbedeckte KTB Amphibolit Proben, die unmittelbar den umgebenden Fluiden ausgesetzt sind, sind wesentlich schwächer als bedeckte, trotz geringfügiger Permeabilität und Porosität. Versagen wird gefördert durch mehrere, nebeneinander liegende, sub-parallele Spannungsbrüche, normal zu der geringsten Spannungsrichtung. SEM Analyse lässt vermuten dass Mikrobrüche, die sich beim Überschreiten der Dilatanzschwelle entwickeln, durch die umgebenden Fluiden fortgepflanzt und weiter verbreitet werden, und unerwartet, auf Grund der reduzierten Spannungswerte, den Versagungsmechanismus des Gesteins einleiten

"The South African squat coal pillar strength formula, developed by researchers from the Chamber of Mines Research Organization in the 1980s, predicts an exponential increase in coal pillar strength once a critical width-to-height ratio of 5 is exceeded. The arguments that have been proposed in favour of this formula are discussed critically in this paper.Field experience with squat pillars in the USA and evidence from published physical, analytical, and numerical model pillar studies corroborate the fact that a squat effect is unlikely to occur in coal pillars at width-to-height ratios less than 10. Furthermore, an exponential increase in peak strength of coal pillars does not exist. An alternative design criterion for squat pillars in South Africa is therefore suggested. IntroductionFive decades of coal pillar research in South Africa have produced a wealth of information on the mechanisms contributing to the strength and failure of in-situ coal pillars and accompanying phenomena. The relevant knowledge was sourced from, and for, a South African coal mining environment that remained largely unchanged in the second half of the 20th century. The depth of mining seldom exceeded 250 m, with mined seam thicknesses averaging 3 m and typical pillar width-to-height ratios (w/h) of 3–4.It is therefore not surprising that comparatively little research has been directed at the prediction of coal pillar performance in deeper deposits, where squat pillars of larger width-to-height ratios will be required to support the overlying strata. However, a thorough understanding of squat pillar performance will be necessary should the remaining deep coal deposits of the country be extracted in future, for instance in the Waterberg or Ermelo coalfields.A squat coal pillar strength formula has already been proposed in South Africa. The origin of this formula will be discussed in some detail in the following sections and its appropriateness will be critically reviewed against a great amount of evidence from relevant squat coal pillar research conducted internationally."

Today, mine backfilling has become an integral part of mining operations, both from a local and overall ground control point of view, and as regards mining techniques and environmental considerations. During the past decade, substantial research has been carried out to contribute to the better understanding of the mechanisms involved in mine backfill behaviour. This work involved analytical, experimental and numerical studies at different scales. Accordingly, this work has been aimed at developing backfill design guidelines for actual working conditions. Backfill design for deep mining conditions is complex and requires understanding of various elements. The most important of these elements are: backfill inherent strength parameters, backfill placement method, stope geometry and interaction between backfill and host rock. The mobilization of backfill strength parameters controls the backfill behaviour and thus, its failure mode. It is believed that the governing boundary conditions and backfill-rock interaction influence the backfill strength mobilization significantly. Accordingly, the interaction between backfill and host rock is an influential factor in overall backfill behaviour under applied loads. The focus of this research is to investigate the backfill-rock interaction, considering a nonlinear behaviour for both backfill and rock mass. Assuming typical stope geometry, the FLAC code was used to model the complex boundary condition associated with narrow vein mining conditions and to simulate the backfill behaviour. A comprehensive numerical study was conducted and the results obtained were compared against field observations. The analysis of findings provides qualitative results, which can be used for backfill design. Surface coal operations in which mining activities are conducted above old underground workings experience hot holes after drilling. In a coal mine, hot holes are defined as shot holes, which after being drilled have an in-hole ambient temperature of 40°C or above or show a temperature increase of 3°C or more during monitoring. Hot holes and other cavities, such as cracks, pose health and safety risks to workers, such as exposure to hot air and high concentrations of noxious gases released from these holes. In addition, workers may be exposed to premature detonation of explosives caused by in-hole temperature increases and chemical reactions. To this end, Coaltech Research Association commissioned a project to develop a Best Practice Guideline for the management of hot holes. This paper is a compilation of the activities conducted in the development of the Best Practice Guideline between 2021 and 2022. The activities included a review of standard operating procedures and hot-hole temperature-measuring and -monitoring devices, and the assessment of current hot-hole procedures at selected mines. The results indicated that management of hot holes requires a focus on pre-emptive risk assessment of mining blocks, identification of hot holes using the correct temperature-measuring devices, and continuous monitoring of hot holes from the time of drilling until just before blasting. Hot-hole management accessories, such as polyvinyl chloride sleeves, were found to be effective in insulating the hot-hole emulsion from the rock mass temperature, thus preventing the potential for premature detonation.

The University of New South Wales (UNSW Australia) has been a world leader in the development of innovative virtual reality technologies over the last 15 years. AVIE (Advanced Visualisation and Interactive Environment) was developed by iCinema as a collaborative venture between UNSW?s Faculties of Engineering and the College of Fine Arts. This is the world?s first 360°-surround, virtual reality (VR) stereo projection theatre system. The School of Mining Engineering at UNSW Australia has developed 18 different virtual reality modules aimed at mine safety training and mining engineering education. These modules are being regularly used in both the mining industry and the university. The School of Mining Engineering is continuously involved in the development of different modules. Research is also currently being conducted on the implementation of other technologies into this environment. Artificial intelligence (AI) and fuzzy logic are tools that the authors would like to consider implementing in future module development. This paper will review current research in both these areas and consider options for applying these technologies.

A new way of producing low-silicon ferrosilicon from iron-ore materials in a new type of aggregate-oxygen reactor is presented. The oxygen reactor process is based on using the calorific combustibility and reducibility of carbon materials inside the aggregate. The key to the process is successful post-combustion of carbon monoxide above a layer of a solid coke bed. Initially the possibility of production of grades of ferrosilicon containing 20 to 25% Si (FeSi20-FeSi25) was studied on a laboratory model of the oxygen reactor. Quartz sand and iron ore concentrates (from Russia and India) were used in the laboratory tests. This test work demonstrated that a ferrosilicon grade FeSi15 could be obtained directly from raw iron ore (containing 75.9 % Fe2O3 and a maximum of 23.8 % SiO2) without using rich iron-ore concentrates. The process was successfully tested on a pilot furnace at Serovsky metallurgical plant. Very promising results and efficiency parameters were achieved. The consumption of materials for 1t of ferrosilicon (15 % Si) production was as follows: 1567 kg raw iron ore, 591 kg of coal (in a composition of ore-coal briquettes), 299 kg of coke (for coke bed formation), and 815 m3 of oxygen.

Finsch Mine is a kimberlite diamond mine located at Lime Acres in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The mine was founded in 1961 and started surface mining in 1964. Underground production commenced in 1990 using a modified blast-hole open stoping method for the mining of Blocks 1, 2 and 3. Block 4 is currently being mined as a block cave. The process of identifying and optimizing a method to mine the Block 5 orebody started in 1991, and in 2006 incline caving was identified as being technically feasible. This paper aims to document the process employed in developing this method by the Block 5 prefeasibility team as well as discuss the technical challenges encountered during this process. The paper commences with a history of Finsch Mine and highlights the complex geology and threat of sidewall failure that prompted the decision to use block caving as the mining method for Block 4. A literature study of mines that implemented mining methods upon which the incline cave was conceptualized is then presented. These practices were then used to form the basis for the designs on which the initial geotechnical modelling was done and built upon through an iterative process of modelling and design changes. The ventilation of the mining area, initial productivity simulation results, and the applicability of automation and comminution processes in the incline cave are also presented. The paper concludes with an investigation into some of the challenges of the mining method, and shows that that incline caving is a technical option available for further investigation in determining the optimal mining method to be employed at Block 5, Finsch Diamond Mine. In some underground hard-rock mines, squeezing compressive ground conditions are influenced by the presence of rock foliation and high stress. In these cases, the orientation of the foliation with respect to the drift direction has a considerable impact on the magnitude of the resulting deformation. Irrespective of the reinforcement and support strategy, keeping drives developed sub-parallel to the rock foliation operational is difficult, and often requires excessive rehabilitation during the lifetime of the excavation. This study uses field observations and convergence measurements at the LaRonde and Lapa mines of Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd to provide guidelines of the anticipated squeezing levels at these operations.

Coal mining using longwall methods of mining can lead to intense disturbances of undermined roof strata. The disturbances may extend beyond the extraction area and the resulted rock mass deformations will appear differentiated. In the case of stiff and undermined roof strata, the energy stored in these rock masses may be frequently dissipated in the form of high-energy seismic tremors. Such events can occur if these strata should fail or „free themselves” either from the constrainment of rock environment or from adjacent strata. It has also been found that the amount of the stored energy closely depends on the size and/or slenderness of these strata. Thus, it would be possible to apply specific preventive measures to reduce the energy of mining – induced seismic tremors. The methods are based on artificial disintegration of the structure of energy – storing strata. One of the most efficient methods is a method of directional hydraulic fracturing, which is regarded as an alternative solution from the traditional blasting and hydraulic methods.

A testing method for assessing the shear-bond strength of thin spray-on liner (TSL) on rock substrate was developed at Wits University Rock Mechanics Laboratories. The gap between a 20 mm thick steel ring and a rock core is filled with TSL along the depth of the ring. After the curing of the TSL for a predetermined period, the sample is placed on a base, which offers support to the steel ring and the TSL but not to the rock core. A compressive load is applied on the rock core displacing the core on TSL contact and punching it towards the void in the support base. Shear-bond strengths for different TSL products as well as shotcrete were measured. This paper describes the test set-up and points out the important aspects and procedures during sample preparation and test execution. The test results are also presented and discussed.

Hercules? is a low nickel austenitic stainless steel developed at Mintek that has a typical composition of 9 wt% Mn, 0.05 wt% C, 2 wt% Ni, 0.25 wt% N and 16.5 wt% Cr. A more corrosion resistant version of Hercules? (Hercules? B) with 0.5 wt% Mo has also been developed. Potentiodynamic tests performed on Hercules? B in a 5 wt% sulphuric acid solution showed it to have improved corrosion resistance comparable to that of AISI 304. The effect of a varying Mn content on the corrosion resistance of Hercules? B has also been investigated and the results discussed in this paper. From the corrosion test results, it is clear that decreasing the Mn content of Hercules? B increased the corrosion rate while increasing it decreased the corrosion rate. Laboratory test-work has established that two classes of redox catalysts based on anthraquinone and bipyridinium derivatives are effective in accelerating the rate of removal of metallic iron from reduced ilmenite (RI) in the aeration step of the Becher process. Two water-soluble anthraquinone derivatives are efficient: 9,10-anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonicacid, disodium salt (catalyst AQ-2,6) and 9,10-anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid, monosodium salt(catalyst AQ-2). When 0.2 per cent w/v of either was added during aeration the rate of metalliciron removal was accelerated by two to three times. Furthermore, the addition of either compound resulted in magnetite (Fe3O4), the iron oxide phase preferred in commercial practice, being formed. However, both AQ-2,6 and AQ-2 were rapidly lost from solution during aeration although their catalytic activities persisted even when their concentrations in solution were low(<0.05 per cent w/v). The negatively charged anthraquinones were lost from solution most probably by adsorption onto the magnetite that has a net positive charge at the pH values encountered during aeration. To address this problem, the catalytic activities of positively charged bipryridinium derivatives were tested. Two water-soluble bipyridinium compounds, paraquat (1,1’-dimethyl-4,4’-bipyridinium dichloride) and diquat (6,7 dihydrodipyrido [1,2-a:2’,1’-c] pyrazinediiumdibromide), were found to significantly accelerate the rate of removal of metallic iron from reduced ilmenite, and both gave magnetite as the oxide product in the laboratory tests. Moreover, recycle tests showed they were not lost from solution as quickly as were the anthraquinone derivatives. Results in larger scale plant laboratory reactors also showed a significant increase in aerationrates when diquat was added and magnetite was again the oxide formed. However, the oxygensupply to the reactors was insufficient to achieve the maximum effect of the catalysts on theaeration rates. The limited supply of oxygen in a full scale aerator may prevent the application ofthe catalysts in a commercial Becher operation. The risk associated with mining induced seismicity is one of the major threats to the safety and sustainability of deep underground mines. This paper describes techniques that allow site practitioners to efficiently control such risks in mines. The proposed approaches rely on ground support to strategically control seismic risk and re-entry time to tactically control this risk. The strategic approach is based on the detailed understanding of past seismicity to as certain the seismic hazard of individual sources throughout the mine. This approach also relies on assessing the potential damage that these sources can induce on nearby excavations using the excavation vulnerability potential (EVP) and rockburst damage potential (RDP) concepts proposed by Heal et al. (2006). It is then possible to investigate how to reduce the risk of experiencing damaging seismicity in mine drives by locally enhancing the ground support system. The tactical approach relies on a proposed methodology to estimate reliable re-entry times or exclusion periods based on the seismic decay following blasting. Some examples of how these techniques have been applied in Australian mines are given.

"As demand for copper and precious metals continues to grow, the need to develop new supplies increases. In the imminent future, the new large global ore bodies are more complex, with enargite, tennantite and tetrahedrite as the abundant contained mineralogy. These resources also contain considerable gold and silver. As such, direct treatment by conventional smelting is prohibitive due to the potential environmental impacts and copper quality issues. This paper outlines the effective application and associated economics of industrially proven Alkaline Sulfide Leaching (ASL) hydrometallurgical technology to an enargite concentrate for selective removal and recovery of arsenic, antimony, gold and silver, leaving a clean high-grade copper concentrate. The fundamentals behind the technology are described, along with those of hydrometallurgical arsenic fixation and stabilization. Flowsheets and unit operations are elucidated, along with an in-depth economic analysis. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical methods can be employed for treatment of gold-, arsenic-, antimony-, tin- and mercury-containing materials, concentrates and ores, as well as complex ones containing any number of metals (Conner & Anderson, 2013). The alkaline sulfide leaching (ASL) system is one of these. It is essentially a mixture of sodium sulfide and sodium hydroxide with other meta-stable alkaline species as required. This is a unique hydrometallurgical system beause it is a very selective lixiviant for the distinct leaching of tin, gold, antimony, arsenic, tellurium, silver and mercury (Anderson, 2000, 2001a, 2001b, 2002, 2003, 2012, 2014; Anderson & Twidwell, 2008a, 2008b, 2010; Anderson et al., 2004, 2005; Glazkov & Tseft, 1961; Gnatyshenko & Polyvyanni, 1961; Nadkarni et al., 1975; Nadkarni & Kusik, 1988; Polyvyanni, 1963). Worldwide, ASL technology has been employed industrially in the former CIS, China and the United States for the production of antimony (Anderson et al., 1992, 1994; Anderson & Krys, 1993; Holmes, 1944; Kaloc, 1967; Nordwick & Anderson, 1993; van Stein, 1971)."
